Louis Vuitton's updated City Guides include new updates to its tomes about New York, Seoul and Beijing

You’d be hard-pressed to name a luxury brand more synonymous with travel than Louis Vuitton . The French house, which started making its famous steamer trunks 165 years ago, hasn’t lost touch with its nomadic roots. And in honor of that legacy, two new travel-themed book projects seen through the LV lens are about to hit shelves.

Louis Vuitton's updated City Guides

  • Louis Vuitton

For over two decades, Vuitton has published a series of City Guides designed to give travelers the inside scoop on some of the world’s most vital urban landscapes. Now refined and expanded, ten guides in the collection are being reintroduced––including New York, Beijing, Lisbon and Seoul––with fresh photography from independent journalists and updated lists of must-see places. Every guide includes contributions from creative types and business people who live in each city, and the result is a curated list of neighborhood eateries, exclusive boutique hotels and cultural institutions that make every visitor feel like a local.

Even though curating a list of great recommendations for its readers is critical, Louis Vuitton still puts a premium on style and aesthetics, so it’s natural that the brand would want to capture the unique look of various locations around the world. That’s where Fashion Eye comes in.

Louis Vuitton's new 'Fashion Eye' tomes on Japan and the Orient Express.

Currently standing at 10 volumes, each entry in this series is a collaboration with an esteemed photographer, who documents a single city, region or country in their signature style. Who wouldn’t fall for the late Peter Lindbergh’s take on Berlin? Come November 1st, two new tomes will join the select group. Adolphe de Meyer , a French-German photographer most active during the early 20th century, chronicled Japan with an album of photographs he took in the early 1900s. Contemporary French photographer Sarah Moon photographed a trip on the legendary Orient Express in a photo book that comments on the passage of time.

Both collections are available in Louis Vuitton stores, on the brand’s website and at select booksellers. Available in both print and digital editions for iOS and Android , City Guides retail for $37.

Louis Vuitton’s 2021 Travel Books Will Help You See the World Through a Fashion Lens

Flip through the pages and get inspired for your next trip.

louis vuitton new york travel book

Louis Vuitton wants to help you go on a journey around the world this spring. Don't worry, you don't even need to book a plane ticket to join this trip.

In March, the luxury brand announced plans to not only launch two new additions to its " Fashion Eye " series as a way of "celebrating the art of travel," but also plans to launch three new additions to its " Travel Books " series as well.

"A natural fit for the soul of travel, photography is an evident form of expression for Louis Vuitton," the brand said. "Our editorial process makes sure that the book is granted the status of a medium in its own right, with the singular aim of continually renewing its visual vocabulary in different ways."

For its "Fashion Eye" series, the brand will launch both "Kyoto" by Mayumi Hosokura and "Normandie" by Jean Moral. As with the other titles in the series, these books reveal a country, a region, a city, or a destination "through the gaze of a fashion photographer."

"Viewed through her lens, the shadows of trees cohabit with diaphanous bodies decorated with tattoos," Louis Vuitton said in a statement about "Kyoto." "Mayumi Hosokura elegantly depicts little-known secrets of Kyoto, bathed in silence far from tourism and urban bustle."

Its second book, "Normandie," highlights the French beach town with a collection of photography by the late Moral. Moral, Louis Vuitton said, "was a popular reporter whose photographs expressed France's sense of freedom and carefree spirit during the interwar period. From the couture models on the streets of Paris to the Atlantic beaches or the Austrian Alps, his publications, stylish or light‑hearted, truly matched the spirit of the time."

Louis Vuitton's three new " Travel Books " will also be released this year highlighting Australia, Brussels, and Shanghai. Each of these titles will be crafted by artists from around the world, too.

Italian illustrator Gabriella Giandelli "reinterprets Australia's brilliance in breathtaking colors, while the Belgian Illustrator Ever Meulen visualize his adopted home of Brussels with wit and verve, and the Nigerian artist Otobong Nkanga weaves the canvas of humanity, plant life, and minerals in the sprawling metropolis of Shanghai," the company said.

Find out when and where you can snag one of the Louis Vuitton website . And, if you're looking for an extra special version of the three new illustrated "Travel Books", 30 copies numbered and signed by the artist will be available in select Louis Vuitton stores.

STRANGER IN THE CITY: After launching its Louis Vuitton City Guides in 1998 — a collection that now spans more than 100 destinations — the luxury brand is adding a new artsy collection of travel books.

The concept is to examine different cultures through the eyes of artists who are unfamiliar with them. The house tapped Congolese artist Chéri Samba to show Paris; the American Daniel Arsham for Easter Island; the Frenchman Jean-Philippe Delhomme for New York; and the young Japanese illustrator Natsko Seki for London.

Each year, new destinations and new titles will be added to the collection. To come in 2014 are Venice through the drawings of manga artist Jiro Taniguchi and Vietnam seen by Italian comic books author Lorenzo Mattotti.

The books will be available — in bilingual version English and French — in selected Louis Vuitton stores worldwide, selected bookshops in France and through louisvuitton.com for 45 euros, or $59 at current exchange.

For each title, a numbered and signed limited-edition sold with original works by the artists, will be on sale in select Louis Vuitton stores for 2,000 euros, or $2,606 at current exchange.

Louis Vuitton’s new book is an illustrated atlas of perfume

Louis Vuitton: A Perfume Atlas maps out the journeys of the Maison’s scents through illustrations, photography, and narrative text

From Louis Vuitton: A Perfume Atlas

Louis Vuitton pieces together the essence of perfumery, uniting nature, luxury, travel, and scent, in the Maison’s latest book by Thames & Hudson. Louis Vuitton: A Perfume Atlas , elegantly maps out the global influence scents have, and offers a rare insight into the artistic craft of the nose.

Uniting the creative minds of Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud, Louis Vuitton’s master perfumer, and Lionel Paillès, a Paris-based perfume journalist, the curated tome journeys through five continents, to trace the origins of Louis Vuitton’s fragrances.

Louis Vuitton: A Perfume Atlas

Louis Vuitton: A Perfume Atlas

Through illustrations by Aurore de la Morinerie that delicately define each page, plus photographs, and narrative texts, the monograph begins with the starting process of perfumery, exploring how flowers are cultivated, and the techniques utilised to harvest the delicate blossoms. The best growing seasons are stated, while the reader continues to venture through how essential oils are extracted, and distilled to create an intriguing well-bodied fragrance.

The rhythms of the seasons begin in China, with magnolia and osmanthus, through to the scents of India with tuberose and jasmine. From floral notes to those that are woody or fresh, each seed pod, berry, and stem has an origin and story to be told, playing a specific role. (In the Louis Vuitton laboratory, 450 different fragrant plants are used to create its scents).

Louis Vuitton: A Perfume Atlas

The book also outlines the inspiration behind the Maison's signature perfumes, such as Étoile Filante , which highlights the scent of osmanthus, a white flower which Cavallier-Belletrud encountered in Louis Vuitton's dedicated perfumery Les Fontaines Parfumées in Grasse. Where other fragrances, such as Attrape-Rêves, have keynotes of cocoa, patchouli heart, ginger and Turkish rose. The cover itself comes in three collectable iterations featuring jasmine, rose and lemon.

Louis Vuitton: A Perfume Atlas

Louis Vuitton: A Perfume Atlas is available 11 April 2024, published by Thames & Hudson.

Myriad: the New Extrait

Capturing the exceptional collaboration between Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud and world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, Les Extraits Collection elevates fragrance to an art form. Enriching the collection as the sixth opus, Myriad reinvents the extraordinary essence of oud – a wood so precious it's known as the black gold of perfumery.

louis vuitton new york travel book

New Myriad Extrait: Oud of a Thousand Colors.

Evoking a rainbow of olfactory nuances, Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud revisits a pillar of perfumery: Oud. An exceptional essence exclusive to the Maison, it reveals the captivating scent of the precious wood in all its splendor. Amplifying every facet from floral and spicy to animal, the Master Perfumer accomplishes a veritable feat: marrying the power of oud with the airy, colorful aesthetic of the Les Extraits Collection.

“Oud is a scent so profound that it seems to contain all the others. I tried to pierce it with light to reveal every aspect of its scent, like a diamond that diffracts light in all the colors of the rainbow.“ - Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud

louis vuitton new york travel book

Concentrated to the extreme in this virtuoso creation, oud blends with a made-to-measure rose. Traversed by ethereal white musk, it extends its leathery accents into swirls of saffron, unveiling its raw sensuality upon contact with cocoa. A myriad of olfactory notes, this masterful fragrance is a tribute to Nature’s genius and the inspiring diversity of Life.

An Invitation to Travel

The Flaconnier des Extraits designed by Frank Gehry mirrors Louis Vuitton’s trunk-making savoir-faire, showcasing the architect’s ability to create movement through static forms. Imbued with the Maison’s spirit of travel, its rounded, supple shape enhances Myriad – in a display of exceptional craftsmanship.

Louis Vuitton Presents Its New Travel Book: Mediterranean Sea

Luxferity, 04.05.2022

Louis Vuitton Presents Its New Travel Book: Mediterranean Sea

In spring 2022, Louis Vuitton launches a new title within its Travel Book series by artists from all around the world. This year, the french artist and illustrator Aurore de la Morinerie offers a set of drawings verging on abstraction that immerse us in the world’s largest inland sea and its ecosystem, from the deepest abysses up to the surface.

The Louis Vuitton Travel Book series is an invitation to real and virtual voyages, enriched by intellectual stimulation and poignant moments. In its pages, the illustrations of renowned artists and promising young talents tell the stories of the cities and countries they have visited, depicting each place’s varied architecture and special light, and recording the passing days and the lives of its people. Heirs of the Louis Vuitton Carnets de Voyage series, which for nearly twenty years captured the urban adventures of a few illustrators and watercolourists, the Travel Book offers a new, contemporary vision of travel, exploring both remote wildernesses and cities that never sleep. Each artist explores a country previously unknown to them. They confront an unfamiliar place with a viewpoint sharpened by the surprise of the unknown or stimulated by the pleasure of rediscovery. This vision of a place as a blank, unlined page inspires incisive commentaries that may be narrative, affectionate, satirical or picturesque.

Going beyond the pictorial vocation of these travel journals, the series highlights the rich aesthetic horizons of art. The creative worlds on show are highly diverse: during their travels, these artists from various corners of the world were free to choose their mode of expression and communicated their views of other places through drawing, painting, collage, contemporary art, illustration, cartoons or manga. Some of the original works born from the journeys, whether figurative or more allusive, have been acquired by Louis Vuitton and will join the collection of contemporary art being put together by the House, enriching it with the diversity of viewpoints represented.

From May 2022, new artist’s video interviews will be available on louisvuitton.com and on the Louis Vuitton Youtube channel.

AURORE DE LA MORINERIE - MEDITERRANEAN SEA

Nature is the common thread running through the work of Aurore de la Morinerie. “Drawing and nature are both places for silence and contemplation, where I’ve found refuge since my childhood,” says the artist and illustrator, who was born in Saint-Lô in 1962. She also likes to take black and white photographs, which are integral to her practice of drawing, serving as preliminary guidelines.

Alongside her studies in fashion styling at the École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Duperré in Paris, de la Morinerie pursued an interest in Chinese painting and calligraphy, a passion kindled by the Sayings on Painting from Monk Bitter Gourd, a treatise by the Chinese landscape painter Shitao (1642–1707), among other literary works of the Near East and Asia. During this formative period, Shitao’s manual of aesthetics and philosophy inspired her vision, ideas, and gestures, all of which came together as one in her work. Since then, ink and brushes have been her tools of discovery. Throughout her many travels, in China, India, Japan and around the Mediterranean, she has further honed her technique.

Louis Vuitton Presents Its New Travel Book: Mediterranean Sea

De la Morinerie aims to simplify the visible world, stripping it bare through her hand, down to its essentials. Giving life to a drawing depends on the speed of execution. Although the stroke may be quickly drawn, it is the result of a lengthy maturation process, as if the hand had conceptualized the gesture before putting brush to paper. All of her subjects benefit from this approach — with just the hint of a silhouette, the entire repertoire of movement is suggested — from her animals (myriad birds, cats, dogs, lions and elephants, to name a few) to her landscapes and still lifes. Her line — airy yet powerful, incisive but also voluptuous, both austere and liberating — joins opposites without embroiling them. She meets the white of the page head on and helps it come into its own. Since the 1990s, de la Morinerie has worked for many luxury brands and prominent designers — Azzedine Alaïa commissioned her to produce a series of monotypes of his creations — and has been a regular contributor to the world’s most prestigious fashion magazines, including T: The New York Times Style Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar and AD Magazine. Represented by Galerie Bartsch & Chariau in Munich until 2018, de la Morinerie’s work has been featured in group exhibitions at the London Design Museum (2010), the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg (2015) and Museo ABC in Madrid (2019). In Paris, the Palais Galliera commissioned her to create two series of works between 2013 and 2015, a portion of which have joined the permanent collections of the museum’s Prints and Drawings Department. She has had solo exhibitions at Akio Nagasawa Gallery in Tokyo (2018–2019) and Galerie Stefan Vogdt in Munich (2019).

Louis Vuitton Presents Its New Travel Book: Mediterranean Sea

Like her entire body of work, de la Morinerie has a wandering spirit and an elegant appearance. Is it her regal bearing or her graceful, inescapably ink‑stained hands that redraw the space around her when she talks? More than anything else, she enjoys exploring new places. Her sketchbook and camera are always close to hand wherever she goes. Each departure offers the promise of new discoveries, food for the soul and mind. Her voyage to explore the inexhaustible depths of the sea is a fine example.

Travel Book Seoul

Raphaël Urwiller and Mayumi Otero, the two artists behind Icinori, capture the beating heart of the South Korean capital, immersing themselves in its customs and performing arts, its layers of history and moments of everyday life. They illustrate the many details that make up the life of the city: residents' rhythms, the movement of the street, traders, shopping, cosmetic surgery salons, street food. "Seoul is an organic city, with astonishing creative energy and great visual elegance, as seen in its powerful design and sophisticated signage. Good taste is everywhere, sometimes a bit crazy, but universal. It is a mix of the baroque and the modern," say the duo. Icinori is a studio of designers, visual artists, screen printers and publishers founded in 2007 by Raphaël Urwiller and Mayumi Otero while they were still students at the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg. Since then, they have been traveling, exploring, observing, illustrating and drawing together with a breath-taking attention to detail, displaying the sort of meticulousness that typifies only the most passionate of artists. They have published around 30 books and their work has featured in leading newspapers and magazines including Le Monde, Les Inrockuptibles, The New York Times, Forbes and The New Yorker. The Louis Vuitton Travel Book collection is an invitation to real and virtual voyages. In its pages, the illustrations of renowned artists and promising young talents tell the stories of the cities and countries they have visited. The creative worlds on show are highly diverse: during their travels, these artists from various corners of the world were free to choose their mode of expression, from painting and illustration to collage and manga.
