In 1979,  Janette Oke  came out with a novel titled “ Love Comes Softly “, the book was a huge hit and made the character Marty Claridge popular, further Janette Oke continued publishing more novels in the series.

In 2003,  Hallmark  came out with a film based on “Love Comes Softly” book series with the same name starring Katherine Heigel in the lead. The film told the story of Widow Marty Claridge finding love again.

The film became a huge success and got spawned into sequels after sequels.

Marty and Aaron Claridge move to the west in search of a bright future but in Tragedy, Aaron dies leaving Marty a widow and she cannot go back home because of the approaching winter season. She asks for him from Ben Graham and his wife Sarah who advises her to join recently-widowed Clark Davis for a temporary marriage.

Marty agrees and starts to live with Clark and his nine-year-old daughter. Initially, it becomes challenging for the three of them but as time passes they share their emotions and hardship with each other and develop a strong bond.

Love’s Enduring Promise (2004)

Missie Davis has grown up and currently, she is working as an elementary school teacher. She is very beautiful and she loves her novels more than anything. Everything is going fine in Missie’s life but when she meets Grant, a handsome New England railroad executive she gets attracted to him.

Meanwhile, Nate appears and tells Missie about his feeling for her, Now it’s up to Missie to choose a guy whom she loves to choose a guy who helps her family in difficult situations.

Love’s Long Journey (2005)

After her marriage with Willie, Missie suddenly gets pregnant, and with Willie starts her new adventure which will bring many challenges and thrills in her life. Willie and Missie leave their parent’s house and travels towards the west to work for their dreams.

Willie is excited to start his dream Lahaye ranch in the Wild West while Missie is missing her teaching days and her family but she has to concentrate on her pregnancy.

Love’s Abiding Joy (2006)

Willie and Missie LaHaye have settled in the far West, Willie is taking care of the family while with sons Jeff and Matthew he is expanding his family ranch. Missie is planning to start teaching again and in between, they get the news of the frontier railroad comes to town.

Missie is very happy as she can meet her father again but all the family gets crumbled when their young daughter Kathy dies due to a tragedy.

Love’s Unending Legacy (2007)

After two years of the death of her husband, while working as the sheriff of Tettsford Junction, Missie leaves her job as a school teacher that she loved the most and resigns herself from the ranch to let her sons and their wife run the ranch jointly.

Further, then she travels back to her hometown to live with her parents Clark and Marty Davis with her 10-year-old son, Mattie.

Love’s Unfolding Dream (2007)

The little girl Belinda Tyler, which Missie adopted her grew up now and has a dream to become a doctor but society doesn’t accept a girl to work in the medical field. Belinda is a tough girl and proves that she is fit for the profession but working with local doctors.

while working in the town, meets Drew who wants to practice law and doesn’t want to stay in the unsophisticated town, Belinda feels for him now she has to choose between her love and her dream.

After the death of her husband, Belinda is very sad and he is not able to forget the happy moments she had with her husband. To come out from the memories of her husband, she moves to a small Missouri town and takes on the job of a local doctor.

Soon, Belinda learns that the town is fighting with an infection, she teams up with her friend Annie and Lee Owens to find the cure.

While Peter is on his job, his wife Dr. Annie Watson is pregnant and is living with her best friend, Dr. Belinda Owens. She takes care of Annie with all that she has learned but Annie’s mother-in-law Mary is creating trouble for her by her own folksy wisdom.

Belinda has to take care of Annie while fighting her own family problems.

After the death of her daughter and husband, Ellie King is a window and is alone, she keeps remembering the good time she spent with her family. To come out of her loss, Ellie decides to visit her brother Aaron Davis so that she can celebrate Christmas with Aaron and his family.

Ellie starts to feel better at Aaron’s home but her problem increases when Aaron travels out of town to purchase land and doesn’t return back.

Clark is a very handsome guy and has big dreams in his eyes, he wants to go out of the town to travel the world. One day while sitting in a local cafe he starts to fight with one of his friends.

The fight results in damaging the entire cafe and now he has to pay for it. He starts to work as a farmhand for Ellen and Cassie so that he can pay the price for what he has damaged.

A young family has a dream of going and settling in the western frontier but doesn’t have enough money. The wife and the husband decide to work hard to make but the wife dies while working at a seamstress shop.

Now the husband has money but is deeply sad with the tragic loss and is struggling to take care of his small child.

Who is Janette Oke?

The bestselling author of the Love Comes Softly series, Janette Oke has written more than 75 novels during her career as an author, which has spanned more than 40 years.

Oke was born in Champion, Alberta during the Great Depression to Canadian pioneers. Her upbringing in the Canadian Prairies and her faith of Evangelical Christianity forms a large part of her novels.

She always had a large interest in reading and writing, but never had enough time to dedicate to the interest. As a teenager Oke had to drop out of high school and get a job at a local bank after an illness in her family. However, she graduated from Mountain View Bible College in 1957; that same year, she married her husband, Edward Oke.

It was in the summer of 1977 that she began to draft her first novel whenever she had a spare moment. By this point her children were teenagers, so Oke wrote in the morning, during lunch breaks, and in the car. Her intention was to write a clean and entertaining story that embodied her faith through lasting values, real life, and honest love.

The manuscript was first rejected, but after six months of research Oke sent out query letters and received an invitation to submit a manuscript from Bethany Fellowship Inc. Her debut novel, Love Comes Softly, was then published in 1979. The publisher is now known as Bethany House, and Love Comes Softly was the first fictional title they published.

Love Comes Softly has gone on to sell more than one million copies on its own. Collectively, Oke’s books have sold more than 30 million copies.

Love Comes Softly is a series that follows three generations living in the Prairies during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It is Christian fiction within the historical romance genre.

1. The Tender Years

Twenty years have passed since youngest daughter Belinda’s story in Love Finds a Home. Marty and Clark’s spiritual heritage has been lovingly passed on to their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. And now beloved granddaughter Virginia faces the test of her young life.

Caught in that difficult period between childhood and adulthood, she feels that she doesn’t really fit anywhere. Virginia struggles against what she considers to be unreasonable restrictions and expectations.

2. A Searching Heart

In The Tender Years, Virginia Simpson managed to struggle through adolescence and was looking forward to stepping into adulthood. When her graduation day arrives, she walks to the podium as the class valedictorian to the proud grins of her grandparents, Marty and Clark Davis. College beckoned, and life seemed to be well in hand.

She thought she would feel different. Like an adult, with an inner knowledge that she was on the edge of the nest, ready to try her own wings. And then circumstances began swirling around her, making her rethink her plans and re-evaluate her priorities.

3. A Quiet Strength

Virginia Simpson has learned that Grandma Marty was right to insist that when God allows something to be taken from you, he replaces it with something better. The return of Jonathan, their renewed courtship, and the upcoming wedding are all shining examples of that. Still though, the trials and disappointments of Virginia’s life weigh heavily on her and the inner strength that has continued to build in her is far from completion.

The first test of her new resolve comes soon after her marriage. Waiting for their house to be completed, the couple has no choice but to live with Jonathan’s grandmother. Although Virginia loves the woman, she struggles with having to share her new husband’s time.

Then, when the house is completed, even greater obstacles arise, challenging both the couple’s fledgling love as well as Virginia’s inner peace. But like gold refined, Virginia will emerge as a woman of character and godliness.

4. Like Gold Refined

If Virginia could have chosen to accept or discard all the changes that came her way, she gladly would have let most of them pass right by herself and her family. She loved her life — living on the farm with her beloved Jonathan and their children, not far from her parents and her grandparents.

But a change that is tearing at her heart is the gradual but steady physical decline in Grandma Marty and Grandpa Clark. She cannot imagine their familiar farm home without their welcoming smiles and their words of wisdom that arise from decades of life experiences and a solid faith in God.

And their lovely daughter Mindy, who has blessed their home ever since her mother left the tiny child with them, has been encouraged and guided to pray for that mother all these years. Was God answering that prayer, or was the worst nightmare any family could face now upon them?

To everything there is a season… and for Missie and Willie LaHaye (Erin Cottrell and Logan Bartholomew) the time has come to start a life independent of her parents. Joining a wagon train, the overly optimistic newlyweds set out to find some land of their own.

But there is a reason the West is called wild. As they settle into their rough and rugged homestead, the pioneers are faced with a variety of trails, such as a late start to the season, some Indian sightings, and the watchful eye of a trio of no-good drifters on the lookout for easy hold-up opportunities.

Love’s Long Journey is the third in a group of Hallmark Channel movies based on the novels of Janette Oke, a Christian author who has enjoyed much success writing fictional tales about the lives of early settlers. Michael Landon Jr. (son of the Michael Landon who produced and starred in The Little House on the Prairie TV show) has helped to adapt her stories and then direct the teleplays. Perhaps that explains this production’s made-for-TV feel, resemblances to the aforementioned series and inclusion of religious references (like quoting from the Bible).

With that in mind, it comes as little surprise the plot falls into the well-traveled rut of many a warm and fuzzy tale. What is unexpected though, is a scene where three masked men ride onto the LaHaye’s ranch and threaten to harm those they love if they don’t hand over all their hard earned savings. While there are other instances of violence depicted in the movie, most are verbal (a ruffian says he’d “like a woman”) or implied (shot’s heard off screen). So it comes as a sharp contrast when a character is shown being thrown to the ground after a bullet hits his body at point blank range.

Fans of the past films ( Love Comes Softly and Love’s Enduring Promise ) are likely to overlook such brief flaws in favor of the script’s longer and stronger messages. These include portrayals of brotherly love, not judging others, and forgiving one’s enemies. These timeless virtues are appropriate for every season.

This third movie installment, based on Janette Oke’s When Comes the Spring book series, features a small gang of outlaws who steal, make verbal threats (including a vague reference to sexual assault), exchange guns shots, engage in physical confrontations and take a hostage. One character is mortally wounded when shot at close range—no blood is shown but the impact of the bullet knocks the man backwards. Some men engage in gambling and drinking at the local saloon—drunkenness is implied. Ranchers are shown branding cattle.
