BJÖRN ULVAEUS ( Music & Lyrics ) 1945 Björn was born on 25 April in Gothenburg. When he was six years old, the family moved to the small town of Västervik, and this is where Björn grew up. In the mid-Fifties, Björn fell in love with rock’n’roll and skif e. By the early Sixties, he was a member of a folk group called the West Bay Singers. 1963 The group entered a talent contest arranged by Swedish radio. This led to discovery by songwriter and publisher Stig Anderson and his partner, Bengt Bernhag. Stig and Bengt had recently started a record company called Polar Music. The band acquired a new name, the Hootenanny Singers, and quickly became one of Sweden’s most popular groups of the Sixties. 1966 Björn had a chance meeting with Benny Andersson, himself a member of Sweden’s number-one pop group, The Hep Stars. They hit it off and wrote their rst song together, ‘Isn’t It Easy to Say’. Björn recorded a couple of solo singles in the late Sixties, at which point he also started concentrating more on his collaboration with Benny Andersson. 1970 Björn and Benny started releasing records as a duo and also staged a cabaret show together with their fiancées, Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. 1971 Björn and Agnetha married on 6 July. 1972-82 ABBA. 1982 Björn and Benny started writing the musical Chess with lyricist Tim Rice. 1984 A concept album for Chess was released in the autumn. 1986 The musical opened in London’s West End in May. 1988 Chess received its Broadway premiere. A reworked version of the musical opened in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2002. 1990 Björn and Benny decided to write a new musical. This time, they wanted to write exclusively in Swedish, and they chose the Emigrants novel series by author Vilhelm Moberg as the basis for their work. 1995 The resulting musical, Kristina från Duvemåla (Kristina from Duvemåla), opened in October. The show ran for three and a half years at various theatres in the Swedish cities of Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm. Björn and Benny’s most recent musical is Hjälp sökes (Help Wanted), a collaboration with playwright Kristina Lugn and Kristina director Lars Rudolfsson. Björn writes many of the lyrics for the Benny Andersson Orchestra, and has involved himself in the stagings of MAMMA MIA! . 2008 MAMMA MIA! THE MOVIE was released. 2016 MAMMA MIA! THE PARTY opened in Stockholm in January, with Björn as one of the producers. 2018 MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN was released.

Questions & Answers

What logos can i use during our show.

We're doing Mamma Mia!, and we want to project the Mamma Mia logo on the curtains during seating preshow. Are we allowed to do this? What do we need to do to make this happen?

Am I unable to apply for rights if my school has no auditorium and uses a local theatre to perform our annual musical production?

Mamma mia jr.

I was just curious if there was any plans to make a Jr version of Mamma Mia? I know our theatre would jump at the chance.

Josh (He/They)

I am trying to contact someone in licensing at MTI without any luck. What is the best way for me to contact someone?

Rehearsal tracks.

We are doing Mamma Mia.  Do you have rehearsal tracks available?

Are we allowed to change some of the keyboard scores to wind instruments instead?

Can we transpose 1 or 2 of the keyboard parts with wind instruments as long as they play the same part that the keys would have? If not are we allowed to write our own parts and give them to a wind section?

Production Pro/RehearseScore

If you purchase Production Pro, do you still need RehearseScore?

I thought I saw an option earlier this year for my cast to load their librettos onto their chromebooks for rehearsing. Is this an option and if so, what is it called so I can check it on my MATErIALS page on the contract.  We are about to start Mamma Mia.

Any news on the release date for this shows & do you know if it will be available for schools?

Just wanting to see if the rights will be available for Mamma Mia! the Musical for Australian Secondary Schools in June 2021?

Christine Sherrill celebrating 25th anniversary tour of 'Mamma Mia!' in a familiar role

The show stars the veteran chicago actress in a role she’s performed more than 2,000 times, in a musical built around the music of abba..

Christine Sherrill (Donna Sheridan), and the Company of MAMMA MIA! 25th Anniversary Tour perform on stage.

Christine Sherrill (starring as Donna Sheridan, center) and the company of “Mamma Mia!”

Joan Marcus

Christine Sherrill is certainly not “only 17” any longer — but she’s still having the time of her life as a dancing queen in the ABBA-infused hit show, “Mamma Mia!”

And Sherrill’s character’s name isn’t officially “dancing queen” — it’s Donna Sheridan — but it’s probably a title she deserves after performing, by her estimate, more than 2,000 times in the musical, arriving this week at the James M. Nederlander Theatre as part of a 25th anniversary tour.

“Clearly, I can’t go out with the kids in the show,” said Sherrill of how she paces herself for the demanding role. “I practice a lot of yoga. I can’t drink. I can’t talk excessively after the show or socialize.”

There has to be some socializing in Chicago, for a woman whose theater life kicked off here. You may have seen Sherrill, who attended Streamwood High School and Northern Illinois University, at Drury Lane Theatre, the Goodman Theatre, Northlight Theater, Marriott Theatre, and on a host of other local stages.

Sherrill name dropped Sean Allan Krill, a Chicago acting veteran in town to star in “Sunday in the Park with George” at the Studebaker Theater in May. The two have recently been comparing notes, she said, on what it’s like as a more mature actor to handle the nightly rigors of the stage life.

For those who don’t know the show, “Mamma Mia!,” which was also made into a 2008 movie starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth among many others, is about a young woman who invites three middle-aged men to her Greek island wedding in hopes of learning which one is actually her father. Long-buried emotions surface as Donna, Sherrill’s character and the bride’s mother, confronts her past. And what better way to unleash those emotions than with the immortal words of Swedish super band, ABBA?

Sherrill said she’s often asked if she’s grown tired of a musical that she’s been connected to, off and on, since 2006, including a Las Vegas residency production in the early 2000s at the now-defunct Tropicana resort. No, she reveals, because this version of the show feels “completely different” — even though little about what happens on stage has changed.

“It’s the resurgence of ABBA and the disco venue in younger generations,” she said. “So we’re meeting a lot of young kids who have not even been to musical theater, but they are coming for the ABBA music.”

“Mamma Mia!” encourages audience participation. On this latest tour, audiences have been much more “assertive” than in the past, Sherrill said. From time to time, ushers have had to tell audience members during the show to sit down.

“We may have had one female audience member storm the stage to sing. She didn’t make it …. She was really enamored by Sam (Carmichael, one of Donna’s former flames and played in the show by Victor Wallace),” Sherrill said.

As she prepares to take the stage here in Chicago, Sherrill said she’s grateful for the opportunities she had here that helped launch her career, including being cast as Norma Desmond in the 2012 Drury Lane Theatre production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Sunset Boulevard,” for which she won a Jeff Award.

“It brought me into a new career of playing leading ladies; prior to that, I found myself playing a lot of comic relief, ... a certain kind of role that was dim,” she said.

She credits former Drury Lane artistic director Bill Osetek with (as the ABBA song goes) taking a chance on her.

“It was a challenge for me, and I felt like he took a risk,” she said.

As for what she’s particularly looking forward to now that’s back in her early theatrical home, Sherrill said: “I’ve already made my Mother’s Day reservations for Petterino’s (restaurant).”

Things To Do

Things to do | brighton actress is ‘having the time of my life’ in ‘mamma mia’.

"Mamma Mia" runs April 23-28 at the Fisher Theatre in Detroit. (Photo courtesy of Broadway in Detroit)

The Brighton native has been a big fan of the 25-year-old musical, built around songs from the Swedish group ABBA, since she was very young. “My first professional show I ever did in Michigan was at the Encore musical theater company (in Dexter) — ‘Evita’ when I was 12 years old,” Deadman, 27, remembers. “Dan Cooney, the director, asked me, ‘What’s your favorite musical?’ and it was ‘Mamma Mia’ hands down.

“I love the joyousness,” adds Deadman, who saw the 2008 film adaptation before she saw “Mamma Mia” on stage. “I love ABBA music. My mom and dad met in the ’70s at a roller skating rink; they can do all the ’70s skating dance moves, and of course, a lot of that was ABBA. Then we got to see it at the Winter Garden on Broadway, which was the first time I ever got to step foot on a Broadway stage.

“So, yes, (‘Mamma Mia’) has been part of me for a long time. This is kind of a full-circle moment.”

Madison Deadman (Photo courtesy of Madison Deadman)

“Mamma Mia” is, in fact, the first national tour for Deadman, who’s part of the company and understudies for the lead role of Sophie, an about-to-be-married 20-year-old on the fictional Greek Island of Kalokairi who surprises her mother — a former pop star singer — by secretly inviting the three men who might be her father to her wedding.

Deadman’s love affair with theater began when she was “really young,” catching the bug while playing sports and taking dance classes and figure skating while growing up in Brighton. “I loved the performance aspect of all that,” Deadman says now. After seeing a cousin act in a community theater production of “Cinderella,” “I remember pointing to the stage: ‘I want to do this! I want to be up there!’

“It’s always been in me. I was always playing dress-up, always singing. I had a little boom box when I was a little girl that I would bring everywhere. I’d put a Disney karaoke CD in it, and as a ‘gift’ to friends and family, I would sing Disney Princess songs,” she adds, with a laugh.

Deadman’s first time on stage was at 6 years old, playing Gretl in a Howell community theater production of “The Sound of Music.” But it was the “Evita” experience that allowed Deadman to truly entertain the idea of making theater a career.

“I was working with people from New York and seeing that they made a living doing it and were traveling around the country and everything,” she says. “That’s when it hit me: ‘Omigosh, if I’m doing this now, at this stage with people at this caliber, then, yes, I can do this. I can make a living doing what I love.’ So all through high school, that was the plan.”

After a brief time at Point Park University in Pittsburgh, where she also studied nutrition as a backup, Deadman transferred to the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where she appeared in “Godspell,” “Home Street Home” and “Rocket Science,” among other shows before graduating in 2020. Deadman also acted in regional productions of “Cabaret,” “Les Miserables,” “The Addams Family,” “Little Women,” “The Miracle Worker” and “Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat” before landing her role in “Mamma Mia.”

“It’s been a dream come true, honestly,” says Deadman, whose favorite song in the show is “Chiquitita” during the first act. “This is what I’ve been aiming for for a pretty long time. It comes with a lot of challenges. It’s definitely hard to uproot and be away from home, but I’m doing a show that is full of so much joy and I’m surrounded by great people and a great company.”

Deadman, who resides in Brooklyn with her partner, who she met in Cincinnati, has future dreams in mind, too. She has a list of other shows she’d like to be in, including “Hadestown,” “Six,” “Rent” and “Cabaret” again. “The ultimate goal of all-time is to originate a role in a Broadway show,” she adds.

“I’m just excited about everything that’s coming, even if I don’t know what that’ll be yet. I’m just so happy and so grateful that I’m doing this thing I’ve loved for as long as I can remember. I’m having the time of my life — that’s for sure.”

“Mamma Mia” runs Tuesday, April 23 to April 28 at the Fisher Theatre, 3011 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit. 313-872-1000 or broadwayindetroit.com.

'Mamma Mia!' takes the stage at Nederlander Theatre, starring an Oak Park native

CHICAGO (WLS) -- It is a busy week for Broadway in Chicago, with the opening of three shows, including the 25th anniversary of a beloved musical.

For just over two weeks in May, the Nederlander Theatre presents "Mamma Mia!"

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

"Mamma Mia!" is the story of a young bride trying to find her father. It focuses on a mother, a daughter and three possible dads in a Greek island paradise.

Alisa Melendez and Grant Reynolds joined ABC7 Chicago Wednesday to share more about the musical.

Melendez, who plays the bride, said the reason people keep coming back to see the show after 25 years is because of the joy it brings to both the audience and performers.

"There's family. There's love. There's women's empowerment, friendship, so many things we can relate to in our own lives," Melendez said.

Reynolds, who plays the groom, said that a unique appeal to family relationships is what has made "Mamma Mia!" so well loved.

"It's really about unconventional family dynamics at the core of it. It's multigenerational, so it's perfect for all walks of life," Reynolds said.

Reynolds is a Chicago native whose passion for theatre began with an Oak Park community theater group. Reynolds stayed involved with performing arts throughout high school before graduating and attending Carnegie Mellon University for musical theatre.

Melendez and Reynolds said that attendees can expect to participate in a "built-in concert" at the end of the show, where audience members can sing their favorite ABBA songs along with performers.

"Mamma Mia!" is playing through May 19, with tickets starting at $79.

‘Mamma Mia!’ Hits the Wheeling Park High School Stage May 3-5

mamma mia musical international tour

Members of the cast of the Park Players’ “Mamma Mia!” get ready for their upcoming performance. Pictured are, from left, Molly Henthorne (Sophie), Lucy Aderholt (Donna), Brendan Loy (Sam), Taylor Andrews (Tanya), Landen Smeltz (Bill), Ciera Faulstick (Rosie) and Griffin Harder (Harry). The show is scheduled for May 3-5 at the J.B. Chambers Performing Arts Center at Wheeling Park High School.

The Wheeling Park High School Park Players will perform the iconic musical “Mamma Mia!” on May 3-5 in the J.B. Chambers Performing Arts Center at WPHS. You can catch the show at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

The musical, which features some of ABBA’s greatest hits, follows a mom and daughter, Donna and Sophie, leading up to Sophie’s wedding day. While Donna, with the help of two friends, is trying to get wedding details in order, Sophie decides to write letters to three men from her mother’s past, hoping one of them is her real dad and will walk her down the aisle.

“I like the message, that it doesn’t matter who your biological father is, it’s who will be there for you when you need a father. There are three dads in the show and nobody knows who the real dad is, but all three of them will be there when Sophie needs them,” said senior Brendan Loy, who plays Sam.

Sophie is played by senior Molly Henthorne, and Donna is played by senior Lucy Aderholt. The leading dads are played by Loy, Landen Smeltz (Bill), and Griffin Harder (Harry). It also features supporting actors Taylor Andrews (Tanya) and Ciera Faulstick (Rosie) as the Dynamos.

“It’s been stressful, but fun,” said Molly Henthorne.

While she may be a woman of few words, her character definitely isn’t and Henthorne does an incredible job bringing her character to life on stage. Henthorne has worked extremely hard, balancing her time with her many different activities, and playing the lead eloquently and flawlessly. The entire cast and crew have been working tirelessly for months with lengthy, daily rehearsals all in preparation for opening night.

“The rehearsal process has been tough, different things changing, we picked this show last minute, so we were already a week behind, but it will turn out very well in the end,” said senior Morgan Skariot.

There is no doubt that Wheeling Park has the perfect cast to put it on.

“You can’t deny how really infectious the music of ABBA is and how energetic it is, so given the students we have this year, it just seemed like the perfect choice,” said music director Joyce Jingle.

“We picked this show because I have a great ensemble cast that gets to use their vocal talents. I have a lot of dancers, so they are able to showcase their physical talent. We have these great women, Lucy, beautiful voice, and Molly Henthorne, an incredible dancer, and the men especially are hilarious,” said director Katie Redd.

After Bill Cornforth, longtime director of the musical, retired at the end of last year, Redd took on the hard job of taking over as director.

“It’s exciting, challenging, interesting. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know everybody and putting it together. I’ve gotten a lot of help from Joyce Jingle, Russ Schultz, and Chris Markle, especially, on the technical theater side,” said Redd.

The spring musical is always a great time, not only getting to watch a fun musical but also seeing talented students get to do something they love, while also supporting Wheeling Park’s theater department.

“They have to come see the show. Everybody’s put their heart into it, the kids have embodied their characters, and they have worked around the clock. This isn’t just a regular musical. They are singing, dancing, and acting. There is so much energy and so much work was put into this. I just really think everyone is going to really enjoy it,” said Redd.
