Ship Model Gallery

Combining precision and craftsmanship in an exacting work of art, ship models evoke the fascination that we have for the sea and sea travel.

Few public figures have had more influence on modern political and social life than former British Prime Minister, Winston Spencer-Churchill. Fewer still had an ongoing relationship with the Queen Mary. To commemorate their affinity a new Churchill-themed exhibition has been brought to the Queen Mary.

Shipyard – LEGO® Ship Model

Measuring 26 feet, weighing over 600lbs. And made from 250,000 LEGO bricks, the LEGO Queen Mary brick model ship is a masterpiece to be seen. The model was designed by England’s certified LEGO Builder, Bright Bricks, Inc., to commemorate Britain’s most famous ocean liner.

The Cunard Story

The Cunard Story An exhibition on the Queen Mary, one of the most celebrated Cunard® ocean liners—explores the rich history of the extraordinary company that designed and built more than 150 ships over the past 175 years. Today, Cunard offers the most luxurious and unique cruise experiences available—adventures curated for travelers who savor the world.

Sun Deck/Bridge/Sports Deck

Sports Deck FWD | Daily 10am – 6pm

The nerve center for the entire ship. The BRIDGE includes the WHEELHOUSE, CHART ROOM, SIGNAL BRIDGE, and the DOCKING WINGS. The bridge is about 90 feet above the ship’s waterline.

Sports Deck | Daily 10am – 6pm

The Radio Room houses some of the original equipment used by the Queen Mary during her incredible career. The current radio room features an array of amateur radio equipment which has been used to broadcast communications around the world. Guests walking past the exhibit are likely to have a front-row seat of a real broadcast, as this space has been actively used since 1979.

Promenade Deck

Commodore’s office.

Promenade Deck Main Hall | Daily 2pm – 4pm

Formerly the Austin Reed of Regent Street clothing store (a famous, luxury brand clothier) the Commodore’s Office is now the day room of our ship’s Commodore, Everette Hoard. Much of this space is still very much original and intact. The Commodore’s Office features a number of the ship’s lavish furnishings; as well as some pieces from Commodore’s private collection. Guests are encouraged to stop in for a visit, or even just a photo with Commodore, our Staff Captain, or Chief Officer.

QM Heritage Room

Daily 10am – 6pm

See the ship through the eyes of those who served and sailed aboard her. The Queen Mary Heritage Room features video interviews of former crew members, war brides, and soldiers; all of whom share fond memories of this historic vessel. This rich history is the very foundation of the ship’s enduring legacy.

Promenade Deck Main Hall – Starboard Side  | Daily 10am – 6pm

This incredible exhibit features numerous models which showcase The Cunard® Line’s fleet; all the way from the historic  RMS Britannia  to ships from the current fleet, like the  Queen Elizabeth . Undoubtedly, the real showstoppers are the giant, cutaway models of:  RMS Lusitania ,  SS Normandie , and  RMS Titanic . These highly detailed, 1/48th models were all lovingly handmade by Father Roberto Pirrone, of Gardena, CA.

Features the World’s Largest LEGO ® Model of the Queen Mary. When you’re finished counting all 250,000 LEGO® blocks, see if you can spot the white, LEGO® cat.

Bow FWD  | Daily 10am – 6pm

During WWII the ship was outfitted with anti-aircraft weaponry to defend herself. This 40 mm gun is the same type of defensive weapon used onboard; to safely carry nearly a million troops throughout the war.

Promenade Deck Main Hall – Port Side  | Daily 10am – 6pm

The Music Room was a place where musicians, entertainers, lecturers, radio personalities and the like could rehearse. This upright piano is original to the ship, however, when the ship was in service a baby grand piano nearly filled this space.

Children’s Playroom

The original location of the Cabin or First Class Playroom. There were three playrooms available for the younger set on the Queen Mary. Each had a specific look, but all contained numerous toys that would appeal to both boys and girls. A Stewardess was assigned to oversee the youngsters. She would often gather the little ones and read to them. Play continued until the parents came to collect their children. The original artwork in this display came from the Tourist and Third Class Children’s Playrooms. The furniture is from all three classes.

Travel Bureau

This is the original Cabin or First-Class travel bureau as it was remodeled after WWII. The desks and chairs are those that were aboard when the ship sailed to Long Beach. Original desk top accessories and copies of brochures have been placed to show what would have been found when a passenger wished to make further travel arrangements. Here one could book another cruise on the Queen Mary or other liners and make train or plane reservations.

A-Deck FWD | Daily 10am – 6pm

The Cunard Story An exhibition on the Queen Mary, one of the most celebrated Cunard® ocean liners—explores the rich history of the extraordinary company that designed and built more than 150 ships over the past 175 years. Today, Cunard offers the most luxurious and unique cruise experiences available—adventures curated for travelers who savor the world.

Fire was a constant concern for “The Ship of Beautiful Woods.” The Fire Station was, not only, the first line of defense to protect the ship, it was also top-of-the-line technology that’s still impressive, even by modern day standards.

B-Deck FWD Portside | Daily 10am – 6pm

A mysteriously vague entry in the ship’s log, dated September 1949, states that a passenger was found dead in his cabin; which is now the hotel room referred to as B340. While no name was given, legends have claimed the victim as “Walter.” There is much lore surrounding Walter and the events that occurred in B340; and many believe that Walter is a vengeful spirit who loves to make his presence known. Reports of strange activity in B340 span from the ship’s days as an ocean liner, to the present day. Perhaps all of the activity is just Walter trying to get someone to listen to his side of the story. If you’re feeling brave enough, ask him yourself. He might just tell you.

First-Class Pool Viewing Area

Ask just about any paranormal investigator or medium about haunted locations aboard the Queen Mary , and you’ll probably hear many stories about the first-class pool. Why? Many believe this to be the most-haunted room aboard. Whether you hear about the ghost of a little girl named “Jackie” who loves to sing and play hide-and-seek with guests, or legends about this space becoming a “vortex” (whirlpool of energy) which allows spirits to pass between realms, seems like there’s one thing everyone can agree on: this famous Art Deco pool has become one of the most-visited locations on the entire ship.

Engine Room

Visitor’s Center D-Deck Stern | Daily 10am – 6pm

Venture down to the Engine Room and see the very heartbeat of this massive ship! Each of the 2 Engine Rooms contained 2 of the ship’s 4 powerful engines. These steam-powered turbine engines produced 40,000 horsepower a piece! When Queen Mary was speeding across the Atlantic at 28.5 knots, these engines would be turning the ship’s massive propellers 3 times every second! Fans of the paranormal will want to brave the Engine Room's lower level to check out the infamous watertight door 13, where guests often hear a wrench banging against the door.

Printing Press

Often described as a virtual floating city, the Queen Mary carried her own fully equipped print shop. Functioning under the direction of the ship’s purser, the print shop provided daily newspapers, programs of activities, and menus for the passengers.

Propellor Box

The Queen Mary had 4 massive propellers (or screws) to propel her through the waters at incredible speed. Each propeller was driven independently by its own turbine engine and was made of manganese bronze. The first set of propellers each measured 20 feet across and weighed 35 tons; however, these proved to produce too much vibration. The second set, and every set thereafter would consist of propellers that each measured 18.5 feet across, coming in at 32 tons each. The slightly smaller propellers proved much more effective to combat the vibration issue. In all, the Queen Mary would have 22 sets of propellers throughout her 31 years of sailing. Each time a new set would be installed, each of the propellers were so perfectly balanced that you could spin the massive propeller by hand! Visitors of the Propeller Box will be able to see the last remaining propeller on the ship.

Aft Steering

The Queen Mary had a number of backup systems to keep her functional. Aft Steering shows two redundant systems (one power steering system and one manual) by which the ship could still be steered, if her primary systems became inoperable. Additionally, visitors can also view the 3 massive electric generators, which powered the 2 hydraulic cylinders that pumped back and forth, turning the linkage which drove the rudder from side to side; thus, guiding the ship. The ship’s rudder was 3 stories tall and weighed 140 tons. At the time of its installation, this was the largest rudder ever installed on any ship!

Their Finest Hours: Winston Churchill and The Queen Mary

Learn about Winston Churchill’s relationship with the Queen which served as his sea borne war room during WWII. It is thought that Churchill traveled aboard the Queen Mary at least 10 times in both war and peace time. This exhibit includes original set pieces from the award-wining film, “Darkest Hours.” It is an in depth look into the person many consider to be the greatest statesman of the 20th century.

Sisters of the Sea

Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, created by a ship enthusiast Tom Varney over the past 20 years. These two 8-foot beauties are 3/32” + 1-foot representations of the original liners each made of balsa wood. Walk around these works of art and marvel at these two sisters of the sea.

Visitors who secured advance reservations tour the Queen Mary in...

Long Beach’s historic World War II-era ship, the Queen Mary, finally reopened for public tours on Saturday, April 1, after a three-year closure — marking the first event in what officials say will be a grand reopening slated to kick off in the coming weeks.

Groups of about 30 people each gathered on the ship’s Promenade Deck starting at about 11 a.m. on Saturday to partake in their choice of three different tours: The Glory Days Historical Tour, the Haunted Encounters Tour and the Steam & Steel Tour — each which take about an hour and are available until 6 p.m. daily.

For some, including Gail Hurst — a tourist from England — Saturday’s reopening offered a chance to experience the ship for the first time. Hurst and her husband decided to visit the Queen Mary on a whim, as their trip with Princess Cruise Line boarded just across the parking lot from the vessel.

“My mom and dad had their 40th wedding anniversary on it — so we got to see where they were for the first time,” Hurst said in an interview after disembarking from her tour of the ship. “It was fabulous. We plan (to visit again) if we ever come to America.”

The ship’s operators, Evolution Hospitality, initially announced that the ship would re-open to the public earlier this week.

Long Beach city officials and Evolution, which took over the ship’s day-to-day management last June, have been working to revitalize the vessel after it fell into massive disrepair under its previous operator, Urban Commons.

The Queen Mary initially closed to the public because of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 — but a 2021 city audit found that Urban Commons had not completed $23 million dollars worth of repairs, which the city had funded. Urban Commons forfeited its 66-year lease on the ship that same year, bringing the Queen Mary back under city control for the first time in nearly 40 years.

After the City Council approved the new management contract with Evolution last year, both found that several critical repairs needed to be completed before the Queen Mary could reopen to the public. Those included replacing the ship’s boilers, elevators and restrooms, repairing the plumbing, and upgrading parking.

Those fixes have been underway since last year — but are finally close to being finished, according to Steve Caloca, the Queen Mary’s managing director.

The installation of new boilers, heat exchangers, and a new emergency generator — which are necessary to have hot water on board and ensure the ship’s safety in the case of an emergency — should be complete within the next few days, Caloca said in a Saturday interview.

And other repairs — including aesthetic fixes all around the Queen Mary — are currently underway.

“All of the main hall floor is going to be redone,” Caloca siad. “The Promenade Deck, all of those those floors, have been restored to the original teak  — and we probably have just another 200 feet to go.”

But the ongoing nature of those repairs didn’t seem to bother 7-year-old Tristan Rodriguez — whose fascination with ships prompted his parents book a time slot on the Steam & Steel tour on Saturday afternoon.

“We’ve been checking in on the refurbishment just because he (Tristan) got really interested and wanted to come and see this,” Tristan’s mom, Elianny Rodriguez, said. “We kept checking back and just waiting for it to reopen.”

The younger Rodriguez has been fascinated with all things engineering since he was just two-years-old, according to his mom. He’s gone so far as to create piece-by-piece replicas of famous ships — including the Queen Mary — in Minecraft from scratch, a skill he picked up by watching YouTube tutorials.

“We wanted to check out like the steam engine when (Tristan) saw the tour because we knew how much he was into them,” Rodriguez said, “And (we knew) it would teach us facts about certain ships that we weren’t even aware of so we could talk about it with him.”

He said he loves ships so much because “they float and they have lots of stuff deep” within them — and he likes learning how they work.

“The propellers push the ship and they also steer,” Tristan said, pointing out where the propellors are located on his model of the ship — shortly before letting out a yell of excitement and taking a brief run around the ship’s Observation Deck.

The Rodriguez’s, meanwhile, said they’re all excited to come back soon to visit the ship.

Evolution and the city, meanwhile, are planning to open up other parts of the ship — including the restaurants and bars — soon, though a date has yet to be confirmed. The Queen Mary Hotel, while not quite open yet, is currently accepting room reservations for stays starting in May.

“Thousands of people have already signed up to stay here or to experience a tour within days of reopening registration,” Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson said on Saturday. “There’s a lot of progress, but there’s still a lot of work to do — in the weeks to come, there’ll be more and more things opened.

“But bottom line,” Richardson added, “The Queen Mary’s best days are ahead.”

The Queen Mary is back in business.

Beginning Thursday, fans of the aging Long Beach tourist attraction will be able to tour sections of the vessel for the first time since March 2020, the city of Long Beach announced this week . To celebrate, the city is offering free guided tours for a limited time.

The hour-long tours include biographical lessons, including some haunted history, about the Queen Mary and access to select areas of its promenade deck, all led by a docent. Tours were full by Tuesday morning , according to the city’s website.

The hotel, restaurants, bar and other amenities will remain closed until plumbing and other repair work are completed in early 2023 , according to the city.

LONG BEACH, CALIF. - SEPT. 25, 2019. Four years after a marine survey warned that the Queen Mary’s state of decay was “approaching the point of no return,” new inspection reports revealed some areas of the ship are still suffering from deterioration. In a June report, an inspector wrote that his findings caused him to have “significant doubt about the maintenance and safety upkeep of the property.” (Luis Sinco/Los Angeles Times)

Queen Mary to get $1 million more in repairs ahead of reopening in Long Beach

Millions of dollars have been poured into repairing the Queen Mary, which was closed due to the pandemic in 2020 and is expected to reopen this year.

Nov. 2, 2022

The occasion comes after the pandemic shuttered the converted British ocean liner to the public and a series of renovations, including critical structural repair work , delayed its reopening. Several studies have estimated the vessel needs hundreds of millions of dollars of upgrades to continue operating. A 2021 report called for $23 million in immediate repairs to prevent the ship from capsizing.

The city has previously said that about 75% of the process — largely plumbing, mechanical and other metalwork — should be completed by the end of the year. All internal repairs should be wrapped up in early 2023, allowing the city to work on aesthetic projects, like painting and flooring.

“The Queen Mary has been an icon of our Long Beach shoreline for 55 years,” Councilmember Mary Zendejas said. “We remain dedicated in our efforts to preserve the ship’s history and structural safety. I look forward to welcoming the community back on board!”

Over the last 50 years, Long Beach has brought in several firms — including Walt Disney Co. — to try to convert the former ocean liner-turned-floating hotel into a profitable tourist attraction, with mixed results. Disney planned in 1990 to incorporate the ship into a $3-billion sea-themed amusement park but ditched the idea a few years later.

An angler in Long Beach Harbor fishes off the bow of the Queen Mary, which an organization called the Queen's Project wants to renovate and restore as a seaworthy luxury liner.

Long Beach had considered sinking the 86-year-old ship after taking control of the vessel last year from the previous lease operator, Eagle Hospitality Trust, which filed for bankruptcy and defaulted on lease agreements. But even scuttling or scrapping it brought an estimated $190-million price tag , officials learned.

Keeping the Queen Mary afloat has cost an estimated $6 million since the restoration project got underway earlier this year . But officials say the price tag is offset because the ship generates revenue through special events and filming opportunities, including a popular Halloween celebration .

Queen Mary in Long Beach: The Complete Guide

mary tour

Things to Do

Hotel queen mary, tips for your visit, the queen mary.

On your next trip to Long Beach, California, you should stop by the cruise ship that never moves—the Queen Mary.

Originally built in 1937, the ship had a long and fascinating 30-year career before making its 516th and final voyage to Long Beach, California, on Dec. 9, 1967.

Since then, the Queen Mary has been docked in the Long Beach harbor and converted into a hotel and tourist attraction, which some even believe to be haunted. Guides' voices echo in the now-empty engine room, where 27 boilers once generated 160,000 horsepower. In fact, the ship has been in Long Beach longer than it sailed the oceans and is now known as an icon for its home city.

Bigger, faster, and more powerful than its predecessor, the Titanic, the RMS Queen Mary had a long career with 1,001 successful Atlantic crossings. Built at the John Brown shipyard on the Clyde, Scotland, in 1937, the Queen Mary held the record for the fastest-ever North Atlantic crossing.

It carried the rich and famous across the Atlantic for three years in great luxury. During World War II, it carried troops. Afterward, the ship ferried war brides and children to the United States and Canada before returning to service as a transatlantic cruise ship.

In 1967, the ship's owner, Cunard, sold the Queen Mary for $3.45 million. After the boat's final voyage, it became permanently docked in Long Beach and has been there ever since.

It may not be as enormous as today's mega-cruise liners, but the Queen Mary is an elegant reminder of a bygone era.

The least expensive way to see the ship is the self-guided tour which takes visitors over the 1,020-foot-long Queen Mary, from the engine room to the wheelhouse. Unfortunately, the tour route is poorly marked, and the big ship can be pretty intimidating when toured on your own. You may get more out of your experience if you take one of their guided tours.

They offer several themed tours, which change from time to time. One of the most popular is Ghosts and Legends of the Queen Mary, which dramatizes paranormal and historical events aboard the ship. You can also take tours in the evening, including haunted explorations and midnight ghost tours led by paranormal experts. You can see a list of current tours on the Queen Mary website .

The Scorpion, a Foxtrot-class Russian submarine, is moored just below the Queen Mary's bow. A tour of the cramped quarters and military conditions (78 crew shared two showers and three toilets) provides an interesting contrast to the Queen Mary in size and luxury.

Events at the Queen Mary

Every Halloween, the Queen Mary is home to Dark Harbor , an intense Halloween experience that features haunted mazes, a 4D theater experience, and live monsters and entertainment.

The ship also hosts seasonal and holiday celebrations, mystery murder dinner shows, a Scottish festival, and other events. You can find their upcoming events on their website .

The ship isn't just a tourist attraction, it doubles as a hotel as well. With authentic wood-paneling, original artwork from the 1930s, and time-appropriate styled decor, you can easily imagine yourself on a transatlantic journey along with Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, and others. The ship includes 347 staterooms and suites, all of which come with standard amenities.

The smaller rooms are reasonably priced but can be a bit dark. For a taste of the luxury of a bygone era, splurge on a Deluxe Stateroom or a Royalty Suite.

  • The Queen Mary is open daily, and a reservation is not required for a regular tour.
  • There is an admission fee, as well as a parking fee.
  • Allow a few hours for a leisurely tour, as there's a lot to see.
  • Take a guided tour for a more efficient and educational experience.
  • Grab a map on your way in. Certain things, including elevator stops, are labeled in ship jargon, but the map makes things easy to understand.

We're coming in mid July as a family of 3 with a 6 year old. I'm thinking the glory days tours. Is the $10 1 hour tour really limited in what you can see? Is it worth it for the $35pp ticket for "1 hour guided tour and includes ship admission"? It's hard for me to tell what this really means.

6 replies to this topic

Back in the day we did the ghost tour which took us right down into the engine room and watertight compartments but no idea where the tours take you these days.

I guess I'm even more confused because when I put my July date in the same tour is $25. But thanks for clarifying, I was confused by some reviews and didn't catch that browsing on my phone. Guess I'll find out 😊

mary tour

I must have done the on board tours before Hunter. Because the ghost tours were not really a thing then. (The shop had or has plaques where there were ghost sightings anyway.) I did see the engine room on one tour though.

We went on two different tours on the same day and they each were only about an hour but covered a lot. They may be different, but I do think a lot can be covered in an hour.

I just want to add that your 6 year old will most likely love it. When we went we had two adults (aunt and mother) and three kids. The youngest was five. At one point when we were on the deck in the evening she said, "Mommy, I love it here."

Important point too that the tour we did was no more than an hour or so and we too covered a lot of ground.

Love that ship. Like Redlands said, special place. Takes you back in time. One of two hotels I've slept in that I say was the best sleep of my life. The other was a hotel in Ridgecrest.

I did the engine tour at that time. Also toured the old submarine that was parked next to the QM. Not sure if it's still there.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

College tour season is about to kick off. Here are 10 tips from college tour guides to have a successful campus visit.

  • As spring starts, colleges around the country welcome parents and students to campus for tours.
  • College tour guides want people to arrive on time, ask the right questions, and have fun.
  • They also recommend students take the tour on their own, without their parents.

Spring break is right around the corner, and for many high school students and their parents, that means many will be hitting the road to tour colleges around the country.

To make the most of your visit, Business Insider spoke with college students and tour guides. They know the campuses like the back of their hands, and they know how to walk backward.

Here are the dos and don'ts of college tours from student guides.

1. Get there with no time to spare, but don't be late

You won't get points for arriving early, so try to arrive on time. But if you do happen to arrive late , there's no need to worry.

"If something comes up and you are late, ask your guide what you missed once the tour finishes," Skyler Kawecki-Muonio, a senior at Sarah Lawrence College, told BI. "They will happily fill you in."

2. Dress to impress, but don't sacrifice comfort

It's important to look nice, but you don't have to don a jacket and tie. Tour-goers should put their best foot forward with a sturdy pair of walking shoes , and don't forget to dress for the weather.

"At Fairleigh Dickinson, tours go out rain or shine, so make sure to wear clothes that will keep you warm," Emily Bone, class of '25, said.

3. Don't forget to sign in, but skip the CV

Most schools have a check-in desk where you'll receive a campus map and other literature. But don't bother furnishing schools with your portfolio.

"Students can leave their resumes at home," Henry Millar, a senior at William & Mary, said. "Tour guides generally do not have any sway in the admissions process whatsoever, so feel free to save the paper."

4. Pay attention on the tour, but do it solo if possible

Some schools offer the option of letting parents and kids take separate tours, which has advantages.

"Get excited about your child's potential future in college, but give them some space to see what they think of that school on their own," Nathan Weisbrod, a junior at Wesleyan University, told BI.

Students can comfortably ask questions without a parent present and compare notes afterward.

5. Ask all your questions, but avoid personal interrogations

This is the time to inquire about any aspect of campus life , and don't feel shy about speaking up.

"Tour guides love getting questions because it allows us to cater the tour, especially in small groups, toward the needs and interests of the families on that specific tour," Halle Spataro, class of '24 at Bucknell University, said.

But some topics are off-limits, so don't ask your tour guide about their SAT/ACT scores or what they wrote about in their essay.

6. Speak up, but let the student take the lead

Parents may be tempted to raise their hand again and again, but this tour is about the student, so there should be space to let them shine.

"Try to take the backseat — or the passenger seat — but refrain from driving all of your child's interactions," Julian Jacklin, class of '25 at Reed College, said. "Students who feel they can own that experience usually ask the most questions and engage with the tour more."

7. Say thanks, but don't leave with questions unanswered

Maybe your guide didn't hear you, or your kid was reluctant to speak up. You can still get the information you want before leaving.

"There's a lot of information students are getting that day and a lot of excitement with being in a new place, which can make people forget to ask certain questions," Lorenzo Mars, a junior at Pepperdine University, said.

Therefore, get your tour guide's email address so that you can follow up afterward.

8. You may know exactly what school is right, but keep an open mind

Don't be surprised if a city-living kid is suddenly intrigued by a small-town setting.

"The college search and college experience are all about getting to know yourself better and growing, so on a tour, students have to trust themselves and their judgment of the 'world' they've just stepped into," Thomas Elias, class of '24 at University of Scranton, said.

9. Take in as much as you can, but remember to have fun

Sure, preparing for the next four years can be scary and stressful. But it's also an exciting milestone, so enjoy the ride.

"These tours serve as great opportunities to learn more about colleges — along with their cities, culture, and people," Connor Gee, a sophomore at the University of Mississippi, said. "Have fun with it!"

10. Weigh the pros and cons of the school, but don't stop there

Your tour may be over, but you can still learn other ways to immerse yourself in college life .

"See if the school offers additional experiences, like eating in the cafeteria or attending a class," Emily Balda, class of '24 at Seton Hall University, said. "Consider it 'food for thought.'"

From guts to glory: 2023 Milford Home Tour features renovation stories, uncovered treasures

mary tour

MILFORD — If century-old walls could talk, what tales they might tell.

For some of the homes dating to the 1800s featured on the 2023 Milford Home Tour, the original walls are gone — gutted after neglect, age or gushing water rendered them unsalvageable. Still, after extensive renovations, the homes are standing and either fully restored or on their way, testaments to history and the people determined to honor it.

You can visit several historic venues on the Milford Home Tour, as well as the Milford Historical Museum, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 16 and 17. Tickets are $20 for those 13 and over and $15 for senior citizens 65 and up.

Tickets are available at Nana’s Niche & Corner, 436 N. Main St.; Acorn Farm, 367 N. Main St.; Main Street Art, 304 N. Main St.; Your Nesting Place, 105 W. Huron St.; and at the museum, 124 E. Commerce St.

Here are the stories behind the amazing homes that can be seen on the 2023 Milford Home Tour:

119 Oakland St.: In gutting a house, treasures uncovered

Kyle Westberg’s description of the work he and wife Audra put into the 2,400-square-foot home at 119 Oakland St. after buying it two years ago for $250,000 and no inspection goes beyond a labor of love.

“It was blood, sweat and tears,” he said.

Westberg, the owner of West Construction and TDG Architects, had a good idea of what he was getting into, but the home had other secrets to be discovered. Plat records revealed the home was built in 1863, almost 10 years earlier than the 1872 date on a plaque near the front door. While gutting the interior, Westberg also found, hidden behind the plaster walls, original pine wood boards that had not seen daylight in 160 years and had likely been used as a form of 1862 insulation.

“It wasn’t a normal construction technique,” Westberg said. “We didn’t want to bury it, the wood was beautiful.”

Instead, he salvaged the wood to repurpose as flooring and 8-foot tall sliding barn doors in the kitchen, where he also crafted a custom top for the island from original 1860s 2x4s taken from the ceiling rafters. Westberg topped off the room by vaulting the kitchen’s ceiling and putting in new beams.

Westberg said he enjoyed the many steps to renovate all of the home in the course of a year he calls one of the best in his life, despite the estimated $200,000 and hundreds of hours invested, including 16-hour days sanding floors, the most difficult part of the project.

Westberg and his family completed the major undertaking with an understanding of design and history, as well as the physical capability to do the work and patience. Most tasks required double the amount of time he originally thought they would take, leading him to adopt the motto, “It will get done when it gets done.”

“When doing a project this massive, you can either look at it as an elephant or, ask yourself, how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time,” Westberg said.

648 Canal St.: Making a comeback from a water disaster

A broken water pipe was the elephant in the TV room at 648 Canal St. in January 2021.

When the furnace quit during frigid winter temperatures, a pipe burst and spewed water undetected for about a week throughout the unoccupied 1873 home, formerly owned by late actress Mary Jackson, who appeared in dozens of TV series and movies.

Sue Bullard, vice president of the Milford Historical Society, which took ownership of the home after Jackson died in 2005, was devastated to see the mess when it was discovered. Besides the loss of Jackson’s first edition, late 1800s poetry and history books that were in a bookcase directly under where the pipe burst, the water had run so long that it destroyed nearly all of the walls on the main floor — which had to be taken down to studs — and also ruined carpeting and subflooring.

Two-and-a-half years later, Bullard stood inside the 150-year-old home that has new drywall and baseboards and custom-made trim for the windows, and showed off doorknobs and other original hardware that were saved and will eventually be in their proper spaces again.

More history: A 160-year-old Milford mansion is saved, welcoming new family and a fresh chapter

The floors are still bare and many of Jackson’s possessions that were salvaged remain in storage, but the home has a spot on the tour to show the progress that has been made, as well as to highlight how old homes can be made suitable for today’s families.

“To live in a house from 1873 isn’t realistic, you need updating of the kitchen and bathrooms,” Bullard said. “But you don’t have to tear them down, you can change them, make them so they fit your family’s style.”

Honoring Jackson’s memories is at the heart of restoring the structure that was built by Jackson’s grandfather and was her childhood home until she was 10 years old when her mother died.

Jackson and her brother Ronald went to live with their grandmother and, after her death, were raised by their Uncle Nicholas, whose framed photo hangs above a child’s bed upstairs.

Jackson graduated from Milford High School in 1927 and went on to earn a teaching certificate from Western Michigan. But after a year of teaching at a one-room schoolhouse in the 1930s, her passion for acting took her to Chicago, New York and, finally, Hollywood, where she spent most of her 50-year career as an actress.

More history: Looking for local landmarks? Here are 4 on the National Register of Historic Places.

Still, she never forgot her roots and when her childhood home came up for sale shortly after she landed the role as Emily Watson on the television show "The Waltons" in the 1970s, Jackson bought her family’s home and returned to Milford twice a year before her death in 2005 at the age of 95.

Traditional tea parties, fashion shows and historical society board meetings took place in the home prior to it suffering water damage, and will return once renovations are complete.

Before the home tour, Bullard expects to have more work done, including possibly having reproduced 1870s wallpaper back up in the parlor and 1970s wallpaper up in other rooms to replicate what the home looked like when Jackson first moved back in as an adult.

The 1852 duplex is the oldest structure on the tour and is occupied by Cheryl Auger and her mother, Margaret Woychowski, who recently turned 90 and calls her surroundings “peaceful.”

610 Caroline St.

The 1874 home has had some remodeling since Diane Cowgill moved in four years ago. She hopes you find it as warm, inviting and cozy as she does.

“When I redid it, I tried to keep in mind the history of the house and what it may have looked like through the seasons of its life,” she said.

Milford’s 1875 Opera House is located above Gina’s Bridal Boutique and was purchased in 2019 by Ed Swadish, who has renovated the space and made it available for short-term rentals .

After releasing in the U.K last month, the seductive 17th-century historical drama “Mary & George” has arrived on Starz. Now, those of us across the pond can properly fall in love with its lead Nicholas Galitzine in the English actor’s third major role of a breakout year.

Popular on Variety

Prime Video is currently offering a seven-day free trial to Starz , after which it’ll go up to $9.99/Month in addition to a Prime Video subscription ($14.99/Month after trial). Starz is also available as a free 7-day trial on Hulu.

In an interview with Variety ahead of its U.S release, Galitizine said he believes the sex on the show is “really integral to the plot and not just salacious.” While he also feels a genuine love developed between George and the king, “George’s appetite couldn’t be satiated.”

The show has received rave reviews this month, with Variety TV critic Alison Herman describing it as “darkly comic and lushly erotic, both boldly anachronistic and surprisingly true to history.”

Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine in "Mary & George" on Starz.

There’s a new scandalous period drama in town that you don’t want to miss (and it’s not the next season of Bridgerton) . Starring the powerful duo of Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine, find out when new episodes of Mary & George will air on Starz and stream every week.

Mary & George is the UK historical miniseries based on Benjamin Woolley’s novel, The King’s Assassin: The Fatal Affair of George Villiers and James I , which details the unbelievable real-life affair between James VI and I and George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham. The 17th-century drama chronicles how Mary schemed with her son George to seduce King James VI of Scotland and I of England, propelling the mother-and-son-duo to become the English court’s richest, most influential players.

The British miniseries—which boasts an impressive 95% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes —was created by Killing Eve’s D.C. Moore and directed by Oliver Hermanus, Alex Winckler, and Florian Cossen. Nicholas Galitzine and Julianne Moore star in Mary & George opposite Tony Curran. Nicola Walker, Niamh Algar, Trine Dyrholm, Sean Gilder, Adrian Rawlins, Mark O’Halloran, and others also round out the cast.

Co-stars Galitzine and Curran were first introduced to Mary & George when they received the script from D.C. Moore. Both actors told NBC News that they were fascinated by the story. “You couldn’t believe the goings-on of this group of people. Life is truly stranger than fiction sometimes,” Galitzine said ahead of the U.S. premiere on April 5.

Curran added, “I knew a lot about King James (the son of Mary, Queen of Scots) being from Scotland, but there were elements to his character and his monarchy that I didn’t know about, and I didn’t really know about the relationship between the Duke and Duchess of Buckingham,” he explained, referring to the titles the king bestowed on George and Mary.

Curran also teased what’s to come in the seven-episode series centered on sex and social climbing. “There’s frivolity, there’s fun, there’s a lascivious nature. But in a very short period of time, in seven episodes, it gets very dark, very quickly. Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely. And certainly with this guy, it was the case,” Curran explained.
