Very good concert! At the beginning he seemed to be a bit without emotion and fun, but it went better. He played quite long and in the end I didn't want the concert to end!

Matt Simons’ New Album Displays His Musical Style: An ‘Identity Crisis’

by Kathleen Nolan April 25, 2022, 10:29 am

Matt Simons’ upcoming album Identity Crisis is a reflection of both his personal values and versatile musical style. In the six singles released from the album so far, Simons holds nothing back. He dives into his struggles with mental health and panic attacks, while still delivering a hopeful message for listeners. Identity Crisis features a wide range of styles, from upbeat pop tunes to stark recollections of Simons’ darkest moments. The full ten-song album is set to release on May 6, 2022.

Videos by American Songwriter

In an interview with American Songwriter, Simons talks about the process of creating Identity Crisis, and why the deeply personal project has been so special to him.

Mental Health in Music

In Identity Crisis , the “Catch and Release” singer shares more of himself than ever, and his honesty shines through on each track. While Simons’ first three studio albums were praised for his lyricism and ability to tackle a wide range of emotions, not all of the songs were about his own life. After releasing his last album, After the Landslide, in 2019, Simons knew that he was ready to put more of his own perspective into his music.

“A lot of times I’ve written from a storyteller’s perspective and not necessarily included my own experiences,” he tells American Songwriter. “I wanted to talk about my own struggles with mental health and go a little deeper into that area of my life.”

Several of the songs on Identity Crisis take the listener through the Simons’ mental and emotional journey with anxiety. “Identity Crisis” is about losing who you are and hitting rock bottom. “Self Control” is about learning how to take care of yourself and do what is best for your mental health, even when it’s difficult. In “Better Tomorrow,” Simons shares the advice he uses to get through panic attacks.

Through these songs, he hopes to show listeners how ugly these mental battles can be, but also that it’s possible to get through them.

“Better Tomorrow”

Each track is drawn from Simons’ own experiences, and his honesty can be painful at times. One of the songs that best demonstrates this is “Better Tomorrow.” Simons wrote the song in 2016, but never felt like it was the right time to release it— until Identity Crisis.

“It’s definitely the oldest song from the album. I just knew that the production was never right, and I couldn’t figure out where to include it. I even sent it off to a couple DJs to get it remixed and it never really sounded right, so it just sort of sat there,” he confesses.

Even when he was confident that the song was ready, his label was hesitant to include “Better Tomorrow” on the album. They thought that the hook: You’ll feel better tomorrow / Even though I know you think you’re gonna die , was too “on the nose.”

“My label thought the lyric was a little too harsh,” he explains. “I tried a couple other versions and tried to change it, but it just didn’t hit the same way.”

Wanting to be as truthful as possible, Simons kept the line as he originally wrote it. “It’s how I feel in the moment of a panic attack,” he says. “You truly think you’re not going to make it. So it’s the process of remembering, ‘I’ve done this before. I’ve felt this feeling. And I’ll feel better tomorrow.’”

Co-Writing Process

While the album is deeply rooted in Simons’ lived experiences, he co-wrote each song with producers and other songwriters. Since Identity Crisis is so focused on mental health struggles, he wanted to ensure that the songs would still be relatable and resonate with listeners.

“It’s great to have multiple brains in the room working on one concept,” he says. “It also leaves room for them to talk about their own struggles and stuff that I go through. Having that collaboration lifts the songs up a lot.”

Simons also loves the process of co-writing because it allows him to build the music and the lyrics at the same time. His songwriting process typically involves him and a producer figuring out “which melodies will work for certain words.”

“It works best when you do music and lyrics at the same time,” he says. “They’re so related. Some words will sound good with certain chords and melodies, and some won’t.” Having someone else in the room to bounce ideas off of makes the process a lot smoother.

Musical Identity Crisis

Simons chose the title Identity Crisis partially because it is exactly how he describes his music. While his songs generally fall under pop, he doesn’t have one particular “sound” that he aims for. The same goes for his albums— rather than trying to nail down a theme or throughline, Simons showcases his versatility.

“The way that I make albums is almost like just a collection of songs I’ve written in the last few years. I don’t have one sound that I want to get for each album,” he says. “It lacks cohesiveness sometimes, but I hope it makes up for it in variety. I call it Identity Crisis because it’s like, ‘What is my music?’ It’s an identity crisis.”

He notes that this is especially evident on the upcoming album, hence the title. The lack of cohesion is, in part, because of the pandemic. Since he was unable to go to writing sessions during peak Covid times, it was difficult to create new music. “I feel like [ Identity Crisis ] a little less organized than some of the other ones because there was a break for at least a year when I couldn’t write at all,” he says.

After five years of writing and putting the album together, Simons is more than ready to unleash it to the world. “It’s taken five years or so to write it all, which is crazy. I mean the last two years didn’t exist so it feels like significantly less than that,” Simons laughs.

Listen to Identity Crisis

Simons has used a waterfall release schedule for Identity Crisis . Lucky for fans, six of the ten songs are already available on streaming platforms. The full album will be available on May 6, 2022, but in the meantime, listen to his latest singles HERE .

As his most vulnerable work to date, these songs have already resonated deeply with listeners. “Identity Crisis” has reached over one million streams on Spotify, and “Too Much” has over two million .

“I’m very lucky to have a personal connection with a lot of fans,” Simons says. “I’ve gotten a lot of people, especially with the songs that focus more on mental health like ‘Better Tomorrow’ and ‘Identity Crisis,’ where it’s exactly what people needed to hear in that moment. As a songwriter, you love to hear that.”

Simons will also be on tour in the U.S. and Europe from May through September, so buy tickets to see his live shows HERE .

Criminal Minds season 15 spotlight: The future for Matt Simmons

Criminal Minds March 27, 2019

Criminal Minds season 13 episode 19

So as we move forward into season 15, what more story is there to tell for Simmons — whether it be with his family or his place within the BAU? Within this week’s spotlight, we’re going to profile this further. After you read this piece, we highly suggest that you check out the video below with more thoughts on the recent finale — on the other side of watching this, remember to subscribe   to CarterMatt on YouTube . There’s also a  Criminal Minds  playlist that is absolutely worth your time.

1. See Simmons become a father — again!  – We learned at the end of this past season that he and Kristy were expecting another baby, and we’re expecting throughout this final chapter an opportunity to see him enter another exciting phase of his life. We get to see Simmons as a dad here and there, both on this show and on  Beyond Borders,  but we imagine that as you expand your family, life becomes increasingly demanding and stressful. Will he be able to continue keeping it together?

2. The state of his relationships at the BAU  – for most of the past couple of seasons, Matt’s been more or less the new guy — even if he already has FBI experience under his belt already. Now, he’s more than just an agent to these people — he’s a friend and a part of the greater BAU family. We had a nice family moment in Rossi’s wedding, but we’d like to see him having some fun with another character or two in his off hours.

3. Explore more of his heritage  – When we spoke to Henney for last season , he made it clear that he’d welcome the opportunity to speak a little bit more Korean as his character and also showcase even more of his background. Even if you don’t have him traveling the world like we saw over on  Beyond Borders,  could you bring more of the world to him — or at least give him an opportunity to utilize some of his language skills? The more that you can show off every wrinkle to what makes someone great, the better off it will be for the sake of the show.

4. Have him take the lead on a specific UnSub  – We know that there are only ten episodes in the final season and because of that, there’s not much time to really give anyone spotlight missions. We’re not sure there will be any “name episodes” in here at all. Yet, we’d like for there to be one episode in the final season where Simmons ends up being the main person running point on a case — maybe the UnSub comes from a place he has experience with, or maybe they’re targeting him in a specific capacity.

We don’t need to venture too far into broken-record territory, but the theme for the final season remains this in our eyes: Give the actors great material, even if that means making their characters feel a little pain. We remain optimistic that they’ll be able to dust themselves off and rise above by the end of the season.  Criminal Minds,  despite the awfulness of the crimes and the darkness within the tone, is sometimes still a story of optimism. It’s a celebration of heroes like Matt Simmons and the work that they do stop the most terrifying of criminals.

Why Did Matt Simmons Leave Criminal Minds? Where is Daniel Henney Now?

of Why Did Matt Simmons Leave Criminal Minds? Where is Daniel Henney Now?

Portrayed by Daniel Henney, Matthew “Matt” Simmons is one of the main characters in ‘Criminal Minds.’ Simmons was first introduced in the ‘Criminal Minds’ universe in the episode ‘Beyond Borders’ (season 10 episode 19), the backdoor pilot for the short-lived spin-off ‘Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders’ (2016-2017). Simmons became part of the main cast of characters of the original series in the season 13 premiere, ‘Wheels Up.’ In universe, Simmons, a Supervisory Special Agent, joins the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) following the disbandment of the International Response Team (IRT).

Simmons belongs to an interracial family, with his late mother hailing from Korea and his father being white. Simmons is the proverbial powerhouse of the team — strong, sturdy, and reliable. And yet he is missing in the revival series, ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution.’ If you are wondering about the reasons behind it, here is what we know. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Why Did Matt Simmons Leave Criminal Minds: Evolution?

According to Henney, certain aspects of Simmons as a character makes him unique in American television and a great example of Asian-American representation. “This is the character that’s been built for the American public to fall in love with,” the actor told August Man . “He’s the muscle of the show, the ex-soldier, the family man (which has traditionally been played by Caucasian actors). I think it says a lot for CBS  and my team to give this role to me. You’ve never seen an Asian-American or Asian man playing this role. That’s why I took the role. I want to prove that an Asian man can be that person in people’s eyes.”

As Henney mentions, Simmons is a family man through and through. He and his wife Kristy have children: two sons, twin daughters, and another daughter. The fifth child is born in the 15 th season of ‘ Criminal Minds .’ Simmons and his colleague Luke Alvez are captured and kept as hostages by a biker gang in ‘Ghost’ (season 15 episode 5), though the FBI agents eventually manage to take control of the situation.

matt simmons tour

Simmons and Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) are mentioned in the series premiere of ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution.’ When Emily Prentiss talks about how understaffed BAU is, she mentions Simmons and Reid. The deputy director of the FBI reveals that they are on special assignments, adding that those two men will return to the BAU if and when they want. This is basically the same thing that showrunner Erica Messer said about the prospect of Henney and Gubler returning to the show.

“Dr. Reid’s and I believe Matt Simmons’ desks are still there, still have stuff on it…,” Messer told TV Line at the Television Critics Association press tour panel for the series. “Like, if any of you went back [to the office after the pandemic], you still have stuff on your desk that was there for two years. So we’re definitely playing that. But [Spencer and Matt] are not  gone  gone.”

Messer elaborated, “ Our hope is that the team members we ended the series with on CBS will be able to come back and play at some point, but everybody does have other projects. We started shooting in August and we’re going to be wrapped in December… so there was a short window to try to get all of our friends to play.”

Where is Daniel Henney Now?

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Daniel Henney (다니엘 헤니) (@danielhenney)

Since the conclusion of ’Criminal Minds,’ Hanney has appeared as Lan Mandragoran in Amazon Prime Video’s ‘ The Wheel of Time ,’ the fantasy TV series based on books written by Robert Jordan. Henney plays another FBI agent, this one’s name is Jack, in the South Korean film ‘Confidential Assignment 2: International.’ Henney is quite active on social media, but he doesn’t seem to have any statement about the revival series.

Pat Simmons Gives Update on The Doobie Brothers, Including New Album and Tour

W hile most bands tend to stick with one genre of music, The Doobie Brothers proved that their style could fit in any genre. Having released 15 studio albums and selling 40 million records worldwide, their contributions to music also landed them a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. With such a rich history in music that spans five decades, it appears the group isn’t done yet as musician Pat Simmons shared updates on a new album and hitting the road once again.

Giving fans an update on what the future looks like for The Doobie Brothers, Simmons revealed that the band was working on a new album. But it wasn’t just a new album as the rocker revealed that Michael McDonald was returning to the studio with them. Marking the first time McDonald contributed to an album since the 1980s One Step Closer , Simmons said, “We are very close to finishing up an album’s worth of new songs. We’re lucky once again to have John Shanks producing and Michael McDonald joining in with us on this one! Tom [Johnston], Michael, John and myself have composed a great bunch of songs that we’re really proud of and John McFee is really a stand out on the tracks.”

Sharing his own excitement about getting to record with McDonald once again, Simmons added, “It’s the first time in 40 years that Michael has recorded a whole album with the band and in my humble opinion it’s turning out to be some of the best music we’ve ever made together!”

Pat Simmons Discusses New Tour

Although sharing news about a new album, Simmons didn’t share an exact date when fans should expect some new songs. He did give a range, explaining they were looking for a “spring/summer release.”

[RELATED: The Doobie Brothers Tour 2024: Upcoming Dates And How To Buy Tickets]

Besides getting back into the studio, in June, The Doobie Brothers will once again hit the road for another tour. Scheduled to start rehearsing sometime in May, Simmons admitted, “I’m hoping we’ll be able to debut a few of our new songs [on the tour]. There’s some really high energy stuff that will be fun for us to play and hopefully work well with our better known tunes. We’ll keep you posted and let you know how that’s workin’ out.”
