The Magical Island

Believed to have inspired the mythical Bali Hai from James Michener's Tales of the South Pacific, Moorea is one of the most scenically striking islands in French Polynesia. Despite her immaculate beauty, she is far from unapproachable. Possessing a relaxed vibe and welcoming spirit, Moorea is just as warm and inviting as the Tahitians lucky enough to call this island home.

Located only ten nautical miles from Tahiti , Moorea is easily accessible by ferry or plane from Papeete. This proximity, coupled with the island's receptive and neighborly nature, makes Moorea a favorite destination for couples, families and locals. Still, Moorea has managed to maintain its small island feel despite this popularity and the presence of a few internationally branded resorts .

The attraction toward Moorea comes as no surprise; the island is a geographical marvel. Eight voluminous mountain peaks rise from its translucent lagoon, creating a distinctive and rugged silhouette visible from the western coast of Tahiti. Splitting the northern shore are two symmetrical bays: Cook's (Paopao) and Opunohu Bay. The island is roughly shaped like a heart from overhead; and in the theme of love and romance, Moorea is one of the top honeymoon destinations in Tahiti—second only to Bora Bora .

Final Impression

Moorea is the pride and joy of French Polynesia. She may be considered Tahiti's little sister, but she steals the spotlight every time. The island is a true reflection of the laid back Tahitian lifestyle and the warm, welcoming character of French Polynesia and its people.

This unique landscape gives Moorea a reputation for being one of the best islands for adventure and activity—both on land and on the water. This means that newlyweds aside, a Moorea vacation is ideal for families, too. Many resorts on the island offer kids programs and amenities, free meals and fun activities suited for children of all ages.

Popular lagoon excursions include snorkeling and ray feeding , Jet Skiing and m otu picnics. During mating season, August to October, we highly recommend a whale watching tour with resident marine biologist Dr. Michael Poole . Another incredible experience is an encounter at the Moorea Dolphin Center , the only natural refuge where you can swim and play with dolphins. For complete exhilaration, try a helmet dive or skydiving and enjoy unforgettable panoramic views of the island.

On land, you can discover quaint villages and beaches along the waterfront or abundant pineapple plantations at the interior. It's very easy to rent a car and drive or even bike around the island in a day. You can also explore the scenic hillsides by 4x4 Jeep , ATV or on foot. There are a variety of hiking trails suitable for everyone from the casual walker to the high-intensity hiker. Moorea's newest adventure destination is the TikiParc where visitors of all ages can challenge themselves with multiple aerial, obstacle courses and zip lines. Regardless of how you prefer to get there, plan to see the view from Belvedere Lookout.

Other activities include golfing at the Moorea Green Pearl Golf Course, the only course in French Polynesia next to the Olivier Bréaud Golf Course in Tahiti; or visiting Moorea's Tiki Village for a traditional feast and authentic Polynesian dance show.

Travel to Moorea

Moorea

  • Travel Guide

A few minutes flight from Tahiti or 30 minutes by ferry, Moorea is a lush garden isle that offers a crystal-clear lagoon, white sand beaches and the extraordinary Cook’s and Opuhonu Bays. Visitors can view the magical waterfalls of Afareaitu and climb the islands peaks of Mou’a Puta and Mount Rotui. An abundance of water activities are available on Moorea including jet skiing, boating trips, waterskiing, parasailing, surfing and deep sea fishing.

Watch villagers as they weave coconut palm leaves into baskets, construct intricate floral head crowns, and carve wooden sculptures using traditional instruments and materials. Moorea has not lost any of its authenticity it remains a wild and captivating place where myths and legends come to life.

The Tahitians of the modern era maintain their heritage and traditions of their Maohi ancestors. Oral history recounts the adventures of gods and warriors in colorful legends where javelin throwing was the sport of the gods, surf riding was favored by the kings, and Aito strongmen competed in outrigger canoe races and stone lifting as a show of pure strength. The Tahitian culture is rich in the islands, welcoming visitors from all over the world.

French and Tahitian are the official languages, but English is spoken and understood in tourist areas. Brushing up on a few basic French phrases and learning Tahitian greetings are appreciated.

Polynesians are thought to have migrated to Tahiti from south east Asia between 2000 and 1000AD.

Around 4000 BC, a great migration began from Southeast Asia across open ocean to settle the Pacific Islands. Many researchers conclude that Tonga and Samoa were settled around 1300 BC and from here colonization voyages were launched to the Marquesas Islands in about 200 BC. Over the next several centuries, great migrations to colonize all the Tahitian islands and virtually the entire South Pacific took place.

French Polynesia extends over such a large area that it took several explorers and many years to discover and chart all the islands. The Spanish and the Dutch were first, making daring voyages through certain archipelagoes during the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1521, Magellan spotted the atoll of Pukapuka in what is now the Tuamotu Atolls and, in 1595, the Spanish explorer Mendaña visited Fatu Hiva Island in the Marquesas. In 1767, English Captain Samuel Wallis was the first European to discover Tahiti. Wallis named the island of Tahiti “King George III Island” and claimed it for England. In 1768 and unaware of Wallis’ arrival, French navigator Louis-Antoine de Bougainville, landed on the opposite side of Tahiti and claimed it for the King of France.

In the 1800s, the arrival of whalers, British missionaries, and French military expeditions forever changed the way of life on Tahiti and created a French-British rivalry for control of the islands. The Pomare Dynasty ruled Tahiti until 1847 when Queen Pomare finally accepted French protection of the islands of Tahiti and Moorea. In 1880, following the queen’s death, King Pomare V was persuaded to cede Tahiti and most of its dependencies to France. In 1957, all the islands of Tahiti were reconstituted as the overseas French territory called French Polynesia.

Since 1984, a statue of autonomy was implemented and, in 1998, French Polynesia became an overseas country with greater self-governing powers through their own Assembly and President. With these powers, the country is now negotiating international agreements with foreign states in matters of commerce and investment.

The official currency is the French Pacific Franc (CFP)

The year round temperature of Tahiti’s air and water is around 80° F. Travelers can expect to enjoy calm ocean breezes and sunny days. Summers (November through April) are known for being warmer and humid while Winters (May through October) are cooler and dryer.

We had an amazing time, thank you so much for your help. Everything went perfectly Jean-Paul and Merehani from Tahiti Nui travel were fantastic, they made it a very special day for us. We were very impressed. A completely stress free day for us. It was just so much fun, just how we wanted it. The photographer was really good. It was a beautiful day, blue skies and sunshine. Apparently we’re the first New Zealanders to be officially married in Moorea. It was the best destination, we just loved Moorea it’s beautiful. Definitely will recommend to friends. Would love to go back some day. The Hilton was amazing, location and facilities really good. Thanks again couldn’t have done it without your help. Thanks
I must say….That Tahiti Nui Travel certainly took great care of me !!!! Everything they did for me……was most definitely…..”TOP NOTCH” !!!! I believe I mentioned how the Heiva seats were excellent as well !!! …..Plus, the Friday night buffet dinner…..didn’t end until probably 10.00pm……So, I was thrilled, when the waitress spoke to the buffet manager, and he took it upon himself to contact Tahiti Nui Travel to ask them to delay picking me up to take me to the airport a half hour, so that I could watch most of the Coco Hotahota’s group performance !!! How extraordinarily thoughtful, attentive, and professional !!! A perfect way to end my South Pacific journey !!!
If you work half way around the globe with a time difference of 11 hours you need to make sure that your partner on the other side is spot on, professional and efficient. We are very proud that Tahiti Nui Travel represents us in French Polynesia. The effort we put into our itineraries is continued by Tahiti Nui Travel with the service and friendliness to our clients. Thank you for taking such good care and helping us with such a good service ….!!!!

Island of Moorea

Click to Call

Does the sound of crisp blue water, relaxing on the beach, and incredible cuisine sound like a good idea?

Then you’re in luck! The Island of Moorea may be your next fantastic vacation destination.

We’ve explored everything you need to know before booking your trip to give you a good idea of what to look forward to.

But enough introductions, see why this island getaway is so popular.

Where Is Moorea?

Moorea is part of the Windward Islands in French Polynesia. It is also part of the Society Islands and sits only ten nautical miles from Tahiti.

You’ll need to pass through Papeete, Tahiti, to get to Moorea, but there are flights and ferries to get you there.

Moorea is only ten miles across and has two bays on the North and one on the West (ʻŌpūnohu Bay). In the North lies Cook’s Bay, a popular anchor point for passing ships.

Fun Things to Do in Moorea

Let’s look at some fantastic things to do during your stay on the Island of Moorea.

Head to the Beach

There are loads of beaches to visit on Moorea. The most popular is Temae Beach, a private beach at the Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort. It offers incredibly blue water and is a brilliant place for snorkeling and swimming.

Tipaniers Beach is where you’ll find the locals. It has a beach bar where you can relax while you wait out any erratic weather and a shallow reef that is perfect for snorkeling beginners.

Lastly, Tiahura Beach, located near Les Tipaniers, is a small piece of paradise waiting to be enjoyed. It is situated within a park, so there are showers and bathrooms.

Under the Sea… Snorkeling and Diving Tours

Moorea Vacation, Arc-eye hawkfish

If you’re into adventure, we highly recommend you check out the fantastic underwater tours on the Island.

You can snorkel among the stunning coral gardens or go scuba diving into the Pacific Ocean to witness some local sea life.

If you’re unsure where to start looking, your best bet is the tour desk at your accommodation; they will help you find the best package based on your needs.

Jetski Adventures

One of the best ways to see the Island is from the comfort of a Jetski. You can zip around from place to place, which is super fun for adrenaline junkies.

But if you’re into slower-paced activities, you can still enjoy these Jetski tours just as much. You can see the bottom of the ocean bed, including all the reefs and ocean life.

The tour guides will show you where to get the best view of what Moorea offers. P.S. This includes visiting whales and sharks.

Set Sail… the Ocean Is Waiting

A boat or yacht will be your best bet for all-day tours of the Island. You can kick back and relax while the tour guides take you to all the best spots.

You can find different tours depending on what you want to see, but popular options include sundowners and diving excursions.

Plus, if you’re in Moorea between July and November, gear up to marvel at the humpback whales, dolphins, and sharks.

Get Your Hike On

Moorea Vacation, Sunset Over The Green Mountains, Moorea Island, French Polynesia

Magic Mountain is one of the most visited sites on Moorea Island. It is a pretty easy hike that takes you to magnificent views of the surrounding lagoon and Opunohu Bay.

It only takes about an hour, with a distance of just over two miles. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you to see the Island differently.

Take in the Local Culture

The Tiki Village is an absolute must when visiting the Island of Moorea. It offers you the chance to see how traditions influence the Tahitian people.

You’ll get to try traditional food and watch dancers, singers, and artists share their gifts with visitors from all over the globe.

Expect to see fire dancers light up the sky and drumming that gets you into the island vibe.

Where to Stay In Moorea

Let’s explore the best places to stay on the Island.

Moorea Vacation

Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa

Situated in Papetoai, Moorea, The Hilton Moorea is an eco-friendly hotel resort that offers amazing amenities and activities.

You can enjoy a day of treatments at the Spa Holton Moorea and finish it off with a dip in the swimming pool, or if adventure is in your blood, then the resort can organize amazing trips, including diving and 4x4 tours.

If you want to stay at the resort during the day, then why not enjoy the all-inclusive fitness center after you’ve eaten some delectable local cuisine at the breakfast buffet?

There are multiple restaurants, with one hanging over the stunningly clear Pacific Ocean. If you’re into the sweet stuff, then great news! There is a creperie with different crepe options on the menu.

Accommodation at the Hilton Moorea is stunning, with options like overwater bungalows, garden suites, and garden bungalows, each with air conditioning to help cool down after a long day.

Plus, some accommodation options have a private pool; that’s a way to cool off.

Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort

The Sofitel Moorea is located on the Eastern side of Moorea (Teavaro) and sits on the longest white sand beach on the Island, Temae. The crystal blue ocean on this private beach is a protected marine area, so there are plenty of opportunities to see the local ocean life.

Property amenities at Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea are extensive, with overwater bungalows being the most popular option for accommodation. An overwater bungalow allows you to feel and hear the ocean as you fall asleep.

There are multiple dining options with a beach bar, outdoor terrace dining, and two famous restaurants that boast fantastic panoramic views. Whatever your preference, you can enjoy a relaxing drink with your feet in the sand or dress up for a romantic dinner.

Sofitel Moorea has it all if you’re soaking up the sun on sun loungers or want a day at the full-service spa.

Food and Drinks…Did Someone Say Beach Bar?

Moorea has some of the most delicious cuisines in French Polynesia. You’ll have the chance to experience traditional foods you won’t find anywhere else.

Food-wise, you can expect freshly caught seafood, stunning meat dishes, and local fruits and vegetables.

Some must-try restaurants include:

K restaurant (intimate and romantic setting under a cathedral ceiling)

Holy Steak House (a meat lover’s dream)

Restaurant Te Honu Iti (laid back with gliding rays swimming under your feet as you eat)

But the food is just half of it. Moorea Island has some unique drinks that can’t be beat. The cocktails are fresh, with some fruit coming straight from the Island.

You can’t go wrong with a beach or poolside bar for a laid-back feel. Is there a better combo than sand, surf, and a solid drink? We don’t think so.

Getting to Moorea

Moorea Vacation

Once you’ve reached Papeete, Tahiti, it’s just a quick ferry or flight to Moorea. These options leave daily and won’t set you back a considerable amount.

Just be sure to check your flight schedules and ask your travel agent about transfers and other travel essentials.

How to get to Moorea Island?

Luckily, Moorea isn’t far from Papeete, which is where you’ll be landing from anywhere international. You can take a 15-minute flight directly to Moorea or take a ferry which takes around one hour.

Is Moorea Island worth visiting?

Absolutely! Moorea Island is secluded and small, allowing you to have a memorable and private vacation while enjoying all the island activities on land or sea.

Where is Moorea Island located?

Moorea Island forms part of the Windward Islands in French Polynesia. It is also part of the Society Islands and sits only ten nautical miles from Tahiti.  Sources:

Final Thoughts

Moorea is the perfect destination for those wanting an island getaway in one of the most secluded and beautiful places on earth.

You can enjoy just about every ocean and land activity on this small Island, making it much more personal and memorable than going to a great big resort on a massive island.

Moorea Island is a perfect choice if your next trip is about relaxation, good food, and adventure.

The Ultimate Bora Bora & Moorea Travel Guide

If you’ve been following along on instagram , you know I just got back from my third trip to French Polynesia – my first trip was with parents and brother, then I went with my husband Kenny on a romantic trip as a couple, and this time we returned to beautiful Bora Bora as a family! I have loved French Polynesia for every type of trip, and after visiting these beautiful islands multiple times, in multiple ways, I have TONS of recs and tips for you for your own trip to Bora Bora.

moorea travel agent

Are you ready for the most comprehensive French Polynesia travel guide EVER?

You guys have been sending over a ton of questions via Instagram , like Where should I stay in Bora Bora for a honeymoon? What does a trip to Bora Bora really cost? Is Bora Bora worth the money and hype? Is Moorea a good alternative to Bora Bora? What’s the easiest French Polynesia island to get to? What’s better Bora Bora or the Maldives ? What’s the best resort in Bora Bora? How long should you stay in Bora Bora? So I wanted to answering all your FAQ of traveling to Bora Bora and how to have the absolute best vacation or honeymoon in French Polynesia.

Where to stay in French Polynesia

I highly recommend choosing one resort and spending your whole time there, rather than bopping around to multiple resorts in one stay. You’ll want to soak it up and relax once you get to this perfect island paradise, and make the resort island your home. And you definitely don’t want to feel rushed in Bora Bora. Before my first trip to French Polynesia, I researched extensively all the best resorts in Bora Bora, and I landed on three very different experiences so that I could tell you guys about each of them. 1) The Four Seasons Bora Bora, 2) The Conrad Bora Bora and 3) The Hilton Moorea . Of these, the Four Seasons is most expensive, the Conrad about 2/3 of the price of a bungalow at the Four Seasons, and the Hilton about half the price of the Four Seasons.

The next trip, we returned to the The Four Seasons Bora Bora because we loved it so much, and we had a little extra time in our trip where the FS was sold out, so we explored the most budget-friendly hotel in Bora Bora – Le Bora Bora Hotel by Pearl Resorts , a Relais & Chateau, which was beautiful as well!

All four of these are incredible experiences, and I think ANY would make an absolutely unbelievable vacation or honeymoon destination. Bora Bora or Moorea is a trip-of-a-lifetime and that once-in-a-lifetime trip definitely comes at a high cost. But, the cost of a trip to French Polynesia is not all about the room rate!!

Below, I’ll go through the three best resorts in French Polynesia to stay in my opinion, from the most expensive, to more reasonable, to most reasonable for an overwater bungalow, and detail exactly what I love about each resort, as well as the EXACT costs of food and drink in the resort in Bora Bora, Moorea, and the overall cost of traveling to French Polynesia / Bora Bora / Moorea for a week at each of these amazing resorts, and even some ways to save on a trip to Bora Bora .

Where to stay in Bora Bora :

Four seasons bora bora, the best of the best in my honest opinion.

My pick of where to stay in Bora Bora if budget is no object? The Four Seasons, hands down. Four Seasons Bora Bora is the ultimate in luxury, seclusion, and service. It’s one of the top hotels in the world , and we absolutely LOVED our stay here. I think it is worth every penny. Both times we have visited, we found the clientele at the Four Seasons Bora Bora to be a mix of different ages, some honeymooners, some Bora Bora babymooners, and some families, as well as a few older couples celebrating big anniversaries and birthdays. Everyone was in paradise on the private, secluded motu, an expansive beach and dreamy pools. It never feels too crowded here – even when it’s 100% full – which I love!

moorea travel agent

The one-of-a-kind Four Seasons service delivers the Bora Bora dream you’ve been waiting your whole life for. This hotel is an IDEAL honeymoon resort, and one of my top three resorts I’ve ever stayed in. (If you read this post on the Best Resorts in the World , you may be able to guess my other two!)

My highlights of this resort are their huge bungalows (the most square footage of any on this list), the mountain views, their private beach (absolutely dreamy, usually you can’t get me to leave the bungalow but I’d hang out on this beach sipping a frozen passionfruit margarita any day), the food!!!, their private island, the pool, spa, and calm lagoon.

moorea travel agent

How much does a vacation in Bora Bora cost?

How much does a one-week stay at the four seasons bora bora cost exactly, with food, drinks, travel, transportation, all factored in, *based on 2023 pricing, in usd, check this site here to check your specific dates . .

Well let’s break that down a little bit, starting with the cost of a bungalow. At the Four Seasons , you have the choice of 3 overwater bungalows:

1. The superior suite, 1 bedroom, beach view, overwater bungalow (~$2000/night and up)

2. Premier suite, 1 bedroom, mountain view, overwater bungalow (~ $2340/night and up)

3. Overwater bungalow, with pool (~ $3,330/night and up)

+ the beach villas, which are very spacious and are popular with families ( $5,000 per night and up).

Note that the mountain view rooms run quite a bit more expensive than the beach and lagoon view rooms, which is common in Bora Bora, as the view of Bora Bora’s famed Mt. Otemanu is what many guests covet, and come to Bora Bora for. We were lucky enough to have a mountain view room during our stay and it was BREATHTAKING – I can assure you it definitely DOES make a difference, but if it’s not something you care too much about, the beach and lagoon view rooms are gorgeous, as well, and that’s an easy way to save some money on your trip to Bora Bora.

Where do you eat at the FS Bora Bora? How much does food and drink cost at the Four Seasons Bora Bora?

I’m not going to lie to you guys – food and drinks in Bora Bora are definitely pricey, in fact, Bora Bora is the most expensive destination I think I’ve ever experienced in terms of food and drink prices (and yes, Bora Bora is more expensive than the Maldives ).

It’s important to know that going into your trip so that you don’t get shocked by it!!! To give you guys a clear idea, if you’re eating out at the restaurants at the FS Bora Bora, dinner will run at least $125 per head without alcohol . Our favorites were Vaimuti – the asian restaurant, the mediterranean restaurant Arii Moana, and the beach seafood restaurant Fare Hoa! Room service was also the most amazing experience just eating in our robes in the bungalow watching the sun set 🙂 If you order room service for dinner, it is more like $90 a person without booze. A burger at room service is around $45. Cocktails beachside or poolside are $30 each, but I can tell you that you will never love a $30 cocktail more – the cocktails at the Four Seasons are SO good & made with top shelf alcohol.

As far as wine goes, a glass will easily set you back $20, and I love the Iconoclast label chardonnay ($90 for a bottle) that is only available at Four Seasons properties (I first discovered it at the Four Seasons Maui – and was addicted!)

PS check out my wine hack on my How to Save Money on Your Trip To Bora Bora article here – these easy tips and tricks saved us so much money on our trip!

moorea travel agent

What are the best activities to do at the FS Bora Bora and how much do activities cost at the Four Seasons Bora Bora?

You can do as little, or as much, as you feel like in terms of activities in Bora Bora. My fiance and I found ourselves loving the beach, pool, and bungalow so much we hardly wanted to leave! All non-motorized water-sports (such as the Va’a pictured below, paddle-boarding, kayaking, etc.) are all included in your room rate, which is awesome.

moorea travel agent

If you choose to do something like a shark and ray snorkeling excursion (which I highly recommend), you can expect to pay about $100+ per person. If you do something special like a canoe breakfast at your bungalow, it is $250 for 2 people (but beautiful, and so memorable). And there are also options to do private romantic dinners in the sand on the beach.

moorea travel agent

What does it cost for the boat transfer to the Four Seasons Bora Bora from the airport?

The boat transfer is LOVELY, and I do recommend it, but it costs about $120 round trip per person. The other way to get to your resort, wherever you stay, is to forego the resort airport transfer and book a private transfer instead. This is significantly cheaper than the resort transfer, and an easy way to save some money on your trip to Bora Bora.

Is the Four Seasons Bora Bora family friendly?

YES! We had the best time traveling as a family to the Four Seasons Bora Bora – and the resort made traveling to Bora Bora with a toddler easy!!!! There’s an amazing kids club, a beautiful family-friendly pool, and best of all? KIDS UNDER 5 EAT FREE!!!! The best. Harrison was thriving in Bora Bora!!!

moorea travel agent

Read up on my tips for traveling with a toddler to Bora Bora here.

How to get Jetset perks when booking your trip to Bora Bora

Fill out this contact form and be sure to use the referral code “JETSETCHRISTINA” if you use my referral, my agency partner will reach out with more information and can help book you with all kinds of fun perks (at no extra cost to you, and they don’t charge a fee to book!)

What does a week long vacation cost at the Four Seasons Bora Bora in total?

All in, a vacation to the Four Seasons Bora Bora for a week would cost around $13,000 at minimum without flights, with that price obviously fluctuating with how many activities you do, how much you drink and eat at the resort, etc. From California, flights to Bora Bora are around $1200-$1500 round trip, and can be less if you’re flexible on when you fly, and we were able to use credit card points for these, which I definitely recommend (check out my list of favorite travel reward credit cards here ). So for two people, you’re looking at about $16,000 and up for a week-long vacation.

moorea travel agent

The Conrad Bora Bora Nui

Great dining, a fun, social atmosphere, and gorgeous bungalows that feel more like you’re on a yacht than at a resort.

moorea travel agent

We absolutely loved this hotel in Bora Bora! An overwater bungalow at the Conrad is about two thirds the cost of the Four Seasons and a great choice for an epic resort in Bora Bora.

I loved the fun, energetic vibe of this hotel and the clientele. The highlight was the restaurants and dining here – the sushi bar Upa Upa – which has glass bottom floors (where you can glimpse some sharks occasionally swimming by), is absolutely BEAUTIFUL, and so delicious.

We met multiple people at the resort who had eaten there many times during their stay (we went 3x and another time just for drinks!) I’m also still dreaming about their Banyan restaurant – an upscale Chinese restaurant with the best steamed dumplings I’ve ever had.

The Conrad breakfast buffet is also A+, and we loved the views from breakfast!

My only complaint about this hotel was the cocktails are severely subpar – the margaritas at the Conrad are made with Jose Cuervo… and cost $27.. WHYYY??

moorea travel agent

Wearing my Watercolors Swim Sahara bikini in size S!

The beaches at Conrad Bora Bora were stunning, and surrounded by tropical palms, with crystal clear water.

Also the pool at the Conrad was one of the most beautiful resort pools ever! We loved the cabanas by the pool for hanging out all day in.

moorea travel agent

All in all, the Conrad is an awesome choice for choosing the best resort in Bora Bora, but what exactly does a vacation in an overwater bungalow at the Conrad Bora Bora cost?

How much a one-week stay at the conrad costs exactly, with food, drinks, travel, transportation, all factored in:, *based on pricing when we went, in usd, check this site here to check your specific dates . .

Let’s break it down by starting with the cost of the overwater bungalows at Conrad, where you have a few options:

1. Overwater villa ($1,400-1,515/night)

2. Deluxe overwater villa ($1,460-1,665/night)

3. Overwater pool villa ($2,190-3,100/night)

4. Other overwater pool villas ($3-4k/night)

5. Horizon pool villa ($1300 or so/night) – these are on land, but still beautiful!!

So let’s say you stay at the least expensive overwater villa for 6 nights, totaling to $8400 for accommodation, then you have to add food and drink, transportation, and activity costs. With 7 days of food and drinks for 2, a snorkeling excursion, and a day in town, you are likely looking at around $11,000 for a one week trip and up, without flights, with that price obviously fluctuating with how many activities you do, how much you drink and eat at the resort, etc. With flights, you are looking at a cost of at least about $12,500 and up for 2 people for one week.

Flights can be less if you’re flexible on when you fly, and also if you are able to use credit card points for these, I definitely recommend doing so! (check out my list of favorite travel reward credit cards here ).

How much does the food cost at the Conrad Bora Bora?

Food & drinks at Conrad Bora Bora are just as expensive as Four Seasons Bora Bora, so an average of about $125 per head for dinners without booze, or $100 per head for room service. You can save money here if you go into town to get some groceries (and alcohol), and I especially recommend this here since I thought the cocktails were much better (and stronger) at the FS.

But, the Conrad is closer to town, so it’s easier to do this here!

Taking the shuttle into town from the Conrad Bora Bora to Bora Bora town

The shuttle costs $22 per person round trip and takes about 10 minutes to get into town. It’s best to go for the day because they actually charge you more to go at night (and the times are really inconvenient).

moorea travel agent

I recommend going into town one of your days here, and going Tahitian pearl shopping (they’re only found here in French Polynesia, and are GORGEOUS!), as well as renting a motorbike or car for the day ($55 at Avis, you can organize through the hotel). On your motorbike, explore the island and stop at the world-famous Bloody Mary’s for lunch! It’s a super fun bar and restaurant that almost every celebrity has been to at one point or another. Think of this place as where Jimmy Buffet hangs out when he’s in Bora Bora – super fun.

Then stop at a grocery store on your way back to the ferry where you’ll want to stock up on some snacks, wine and booze at the local prices and bring them back to your room! The grocery store is a 5 min walk left if you are coming out of where the shuttle drops you off. There are a ton of good french wines available at the store, we ended up bringing back some Chilean Montes Alpha red (so good!), some French rose, and some French chardonnay (Louis Latour) to enjoy in our bungalow, as well as some meats and cheeses!

Which bungalow to choose at the Conrad Bora Bora

We stayed in the 200’s and loved our view of all ocean! We stayed in the Deluxe Overwater Villa category . The 200’s are also the most convenient wing, but they have bikes to get around, too which is awesome!

Here at the Conrad it was less important to me to have a mountain view, since it isn’t as prominent of the quintessential Bora Bora mountain view, but I have heard the mountain view rooms here are great, too, I just loved the endless blues of the 200 bungalows. We were in bungalow 208 and this was our view!

moorea travel agent

Located in the 300’s, with panoramic ocean views, the presidential villas are actually where Kim Kardashian stayed in Bora Bora in an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. They are HUGE, and multi-story. These presidential villas are well known as being some of the most impressive and beautiful overwater bungalows in all of French Polynesia.

If budget is no object or you have a big group, these Presidential Overwater Villas are for you .

Le Bora Bora Hotel by Pearl Resorts , a Relais & Chateau

Le Bora Bora was very recently remodeled (2021) and is a beautiful property at a more budget-friendly price in Bora Bora. The setting of the resort, and the rooms, are absolutely stunning. The sand is super soft on the beach (which it isn’t at every resort, you often find rockier beaches in French Polynesia!) and I would say that while this isn’t on the level of a Four Seasons or Conrad in terms of the food and service, it is a great choice if you are looking to save money and still have an unreal setting & experience in Bora Bora. It’s also a great choice if you’re going to be out exploring French Polynesia for much of your stay (maybe you’re a diver or snorkel-fiend or you are going to be going into town and doing some activities there), then this would make a great laid-back and beautiful base for your trip. Whereas if you are a big resorter and looking for the best of the best in terms of a resort experience (food, service, etc) somewhere like the Four Seasons might be a better fit.

The resort is located a short 20 minutes by boat from the airport in Bora Bora and has some of the most spectacular views of Bora Bora’s famed Mt. Otemanu. Le Bora Bora also has one of the best white sand beaches in Bora Bora, with coral-free soft sand!!!

The rooms are on the smaller side, but being recently remodeled, they’re very nice . Just not as spacious as the other resorts!

The best activities to do in Bora Bora:

The best part about a French Polynesia / Bora Bora vacation is you can be as active, or as relaxed, as you want to be. Feel like not leaving your overwater bungalow and cuddling up with a great beach read all day? Do you. Put some rosé on ice and have the day of your life. Feel like getting active and swimming with sharks or motorbiking around the island? You can do that too! Here are some of my favorite tours and must-dos in Bora Bora:

Swim with Sharks & Rays!

Group tour vs private tour.

This is the tour company who we swam with sharks and rays with our last trip to Bora Bora when we were just the two of us. For 2 of us, we had a great time on the group tour – it was AWESOME. They picked us up directly from the Conrad, we went first to a gorgeous, shallow sand bar to snorkel with TONS of rays, then to a deep, gorgeous blue area where the black tip sharks hang out to swim with sharks! It was amazing, and not scary at all! They are such graceful, majestic creatures, and beautiful to see up close! After that, we headed to the Coral Gardens, which was some of the absolute best snorkeling I’ve ever done in my life. All in all, this tour was incredible, and so affordable, too!

Or, on this trip, we opted to do a private sharks and rays tour since we were traveling with our little toddler, a private tour was a better fit for us!

This was SO much fun – and fun to get our kiddo involved too!! He felt like he was inside an aquarium!!!

Rent a motorbike and explore Bora Bora island

I mentioned this above but we loved doing this from the Conrad. We spent the day motorbiking around the island (gorgeous!) and had the best time. We stopped at Bloody Mary’s – a super famous restaurant and bar on the island, as well as to Bora Bora yacht club for a drink. Then we went to a grocery store right by where the Conrad shuttle drops you off and bought a TON of wine, cheese, and meats at super cheap prices to then have at our bungalow back at the Conrad . We also met another couple that was stocking up on tequila and a ton of snacks – this is the move, yall!

Go on your own ($55 through Avis at the port), or take a tour like this one:

Where to eat on Bora Bora Island

Restaurant St. James – great spot for lunch, dinner, and sunset views.

Bloody Mary’s – world famous bar & grill, celeb favorite

Bora Bora Yacht Club – waterside dining, casual

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MOORE-A…

Moorea is an island just a 30 minute ferry ride away from tahiti. it’s super tropical, lush, and full of wildlife. some people choose it over bora bora for its snorkeling, diving, and more approachable pricing and more laid-back style. .

Where to stay in Moorea

The hilton moorea.

Luxe overwater bungalows and gorgeous views that will take your breath away, a great alternative to Bora Bora resorts, without the Bora Bora price tag

How do you get to the Hilton Moorea ?

To get to Moorea from the Tahiti airport, you take a $25 taxi to the port, and then take a 30-minute ferry over to Moorea ($25 a person). It’s super easy to get over to Moorea and it’s definitely a plus that it is located only a boat ride from Tahiti and not a flight like Bora Bora. If you are flying in or ferrying in, know that it’s not easy to get taxis on Moorea – you have to book transportation ahead of time – the largest transfer company on  Moorea is Albert Tours . They will happily arrange your roundtrip transfer to/from airport and/or ferry, and it’s about $10-$15.

How much does a one week stay at the Hilton Moorea cost exactly, with food, drinks, travel, transportation, all factored in?

How do you get around moorea how much is transportation.

Transportation from the airport is $25 each way, plus the ferry from Tahiti to Moorea is $25 round trip per person, plus a transfer to the hotel (about $10/person). You also might choose to rent a motorbike or a car for a couple of the days (which I definitely recommend to explore the island), which is around $55 a day for a scooter. If you don’t you’ll likely have cab costs that are equal to that, so about $200 in transportation total.

What overwater bungalow should you book at the Hilton Moorea?

Repeat after me: You MUST choose an overwater bungalow at the Hilton Moorea. You MUST choose an overwater bungalow at the Hilton Moorea. This is where this hotel SHINES. The beach bungalows are reeeeeally tired and not what you’re looking for. Don’t go for the cheapest room and expect an upgrade – because these overwater bungalows gets snapped up!!!

We stayed in a King Overwater bungalow,  and this was our view. It was GORGEOUS! It’s not deep enough to dive, but there’s a HUGE reef everywhere right outside of your bungalow, meaning you start seeing a bunch of fish right away (and even under your room through the glass bottom part of the floor!)

moorea travel agent

I also loved that we could paddleboard and kayak around the area! (Complimentary for resort guests).

How much does food cost in Moorea?

Food on Mo’orea is definitely more reasonable than on Bora Bora, especially because it’s easy to eat in town, and you have tons of great options. We absolutely loved this restaurant called Le Lezard Jaune , and had our best meal in all of French Polynesia there – for only $75 for both of us without booze (with wine, a total of around $120). Another great find is Allo Pizza, which is a casual pizza restaurant on the side of the street that makes great pizza – and is a great way to have an affordable meal in Moorea. At the resort, the prices are reasonable – like $30 for an entree vs $50+, and we LOVED the creperie Toatea at the Hilton for dinner.

The all-in cost of a one week vacation at Hilton Moorea

*These prices are in USD, based off of when we went, search your exact dates here.

The least expensive overwater bungalow at the Hilton Moorea goes for about $750, with more premium ones getting up to $900 a night. For less, you can stay on land in one of their land villas – which have their own pool and aren’t half bad! But I definitely recommend the overwater bungalow if you can swing it 🙂

With flights, transportation, food and drink, and some activities, for a week in Moorea staying in an overwater bungalow you are looking at about $750 x 6 nights for accommodation, around $1200 for flights (less than Bora Bora, because one less flight), $200 for transportation, $150×6 on average for food + drinks, and $500 for activities. It comes out to about $8000 cost for a week long stay in Moorea.

The Sofitel Moorea

The Sofitel is another great Moorea option when it comes to an overwater bungalow resort. Nestled within a pristine, marine-protected area on the white-powder sands of Temae, Moorea’s longest private beach, this resort boasts a better pool than the Hilton Moorea, and thus is why many choose it over the Hilton. However, service here can be slow and not ultra-ultra-luxurious.

The best things to do in moorea, snorkeling with whales in mo’orea .

There are only a few places in the world where you have the chance to swim with and observe humpback whales in their natural habitat – and Moorea is one of them. So if you’re lucky enough to be traveling to French Polynesia between July and October, you are catching PRIME whale watching season, and you must do this tour! The majestically beautiful humpback whales are in French Polynesia during this time breeding and birthing their calves. These tours will spend the day whale watching, and if the It’s not uncommon during this time of year to see a mother and a calf together, and to see them swimming in the water is just pure MAGIC.

I like these tours because their philosophy and ethic is to observe the animals with respect and passion, with no stress on them at all and to merely observe them and not cause any change in their natural behavior. If the weather is right, and you find the animals in the exact right position, you will have the opportunity of a lifetime to get in with the humpback whales! We did and it was so, so beautiful.

Snorkeling with Sharks & Rays in Moorea

Some argue that the sharks and ray snorkeling in Moorea is even better than in Bora Bora! And I believe it! The wildlife is EVERYWHERE in Moorea – there is amazing snorkeling everywhere, even right outside your bungalow!

Shop for the beautiful and rare Tahitian Pearls in Moorea

We loved shopping around for Tahitian pearls in French Polynesia, and in Moorea loved Moana Pearls – which had an amazing selection and beautiful designs and settings. She also did a great job at teaching us about the Tahitian Pearls. These dark pearls can only be found in French Polynesia, and are very sought after for their rarity as well as their gorgeous coloring – especially the beautiful eggplant and peacock colors. The gorgeous kaleidoscope of colors you find in Tahitian pearls are entirely natural, unlike freshwater pearls which are dyed while farming.

moorea travel agent

As a general rule of thumb, the more round, and perfect the pearl, the more expensive. Also the more beautiful the color (like eggplant and peacock colors), the more expensive.

Where to eat in Moorea

Toatea creperie at the Hilton – we loved this place so much we went twice! You’ll see sharks swimming by during dinner, which is AMAZING, and the food is so so good. Still dreaming about the dessert crepes – yum.

Le Lezard Jaune – I would have gone to this place every single night if I could. This was my favorite meal in all of French Polynesia – and felt like dinner in Paris mixed with an island dinner, aka HEAVENLY. We loved this place, and the people who run it.

Moorea Beach Cafe & Wood Oven Pizzeria

This place was SO cute. This beach club is where the yachts anchor when they come to Moorea, and the sunset views are amazing.

FAQs about Traveling to Bora Bora and Moorea

Should i go to bora bora or moorea.

This question totally depends on you and your personality! I personally love BOTH so much, but they are very different trips to me. If you’ve been to Hawaii, Bora Bora is more like Maui – resortey, pristine, perfect, and Moorea is more like Kauai – rugged, less refined, more lush, and majestically beautiful.

If you go to BOTH Moorea and Bora Bora, I  definitely recommend starting with Moorea and finishing in Bora Bora. It is very tough to go the other way around.

What is the difference between Moorea and Bora Bora?

Besides their general feel and vibe, one of the main differences is when staying on Bora Bora you are on a disconnected atoll – or private island off of the main island of Bora Bora (except if you stay on the main island at the Intercontinental!), on Moorea, you are on the main island, so it’s easy to try fun restaurants in town, explore the town, go shopping, walking, etc, right from the resort. Moorea has more outdated resorts, but the easy access to the island. Bora Bora has more glitzy, 7-star resorts, but you are pretty isolated.

moorea travel agent

How long should you stay in Bora Bora or Moorea?

Personally, I think about 6 nights is the optimal amount of time to travel to Bora Bora or Moorea. It’s enough to feel totally relaxed, while still having time to see and do a lot! You can definitely do less than that, and you can DEFINITELY do more, but in my opinion a week is a perfect amount of time in French Polynesia.

Ways to cut costs on a trip to Bora Bora

Use credit card points for your trip.

We used mostly credit card points from our Chase Rewards Sapphire Card for our Bora Bora trip (the hotels and the flights), which was so awesome to basically only have to worry about the food and drinks!

Pack some of your own wine

Each person is allowed to fly with 2 L of liquor or wine for a trip to French Polynesia – so definitely take advantage of that! I always pack wine in my checked bag – it’s a great excuse to break out some of my favorite wines , and I always remember and always associate them with the trips I drink them on – which I love! We packed 6 bottles of our own wine, and drank them with sunset in our bungalows!

Also be sure to use these wine sleeves so the bottles don’t break in your bag! I reuse them over and over.

Go into town and stock up on snacks, beer, soda, and wine

Don’t pay resort prices for silly things like sodas, beer or even a little cheese plate. Besides bringing wine, you can also head into town and get some provisions, too! The grocery store has a ton of French delicacies, and it was super easy and affordable. FYI – This is much easier to get into town at Conrad and Hilton Moorea than it is at FS, however.

Consider a less expensive resort or an airbnb

One resort that makes it easy to save big is the Intercontinental Le Moana that is on the mainland of Bora Bora island. Bungalows here are more like $600-$800 a night, but where you’ll really save is on the food since it’s easy to go into town and eat in the restaurants in town.

In Moorea, you can also stay in an Airbnb and go to the resorts on a day pass (The Hilton day pass includes lunch, too! Check with them for availability on this)

What’s better Bora Bora or the Maldives?

Bora Bora and the Maldives may seem similar, but they’re actually completely different vibes. Check out this post Bora Bora vs. The Maldives – where I break down all of the differences and which one is better for YOU.

Do you need a VISA to travel to French Polynesia from the USA?

U.S. citizens do not need a visa if entering on a regular tourist passport and staying no more than 90 days every six months. If the purpose of the trip is not tourism (work, scientific research, etc.), then you may be required to obtain a visa before arrival in French Polynesia.

Do you need any special vaccinations for French Polynesia? What are the recommended vaccines for Bora Bora?

There are no absolute requirements that will be checked at the airport, but the CDC and WHO recommend you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before every trip. These vaccines include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, and polio vaccine.

For some travelers to Bora Bora and French Polynesia, Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccines are recommended. CDC recommends hep A because you can get hepatitis A through contaminated food or water in French Polynesia, regardless of where you are eating or staying. You can get typhoid through contaminated food or water in French Polynesia. CDC recommends the Typhoid vaccine for most travelers, especially if you are staying with friends or relatives, visiting smaller cities or rural areas, or if you are an adventurous eater.

Dengue Fever is also risk in many parts of Asia and the Pacific Islands. There is no vaccine for this but travelers to Asia and the Pacific Islands can protect themselves by preventing mosquito bites. Pack your bug spray ! This is what I use .

What time of year is best for visiting French Polynesia?

The best season to travel to Bora Bora is from May-October, and if you are traveling to French Polynesia in July-October you’ll catch humpback whale season in Moorea which is awesome. I went in late August/early September for 2 weeks and the weather was PERFECT! Only one rainstorm, overnight, and the rest of the time completely sunny in Bora Bora. It was windy that time of year, but we liked that because it keeps you cool. 80 and breezy is pretty much the perfect temperature that exists am I right? We got a little early morning rain in Moorea that time of year, but that’s just a rainier island. I’ve also been to French Polynesia in May/June and it was GORGEOUS that time of year, too. Less breezy, lots of sunshine.

Do you need to use a travel agent to book Bora Bora?

Definitely not! Book it yourself – you’ll find the best deals online (I always like Booking.com , Hotels.com , Skyscanner for flights , and Tripadvisor for tours )

If you do need help planning or want to bounce some ideas and questions off of an expert, I offer 1:1 trip consults, honeymoon consultations and full custom itineraries to help with that! You can learn more about those here .

What to pack for Bora Bora

Cute swimwear and cover-ups , matching his-and-hers swimwear (of course), lots of sun hats , reef-safe sunscreen (FYI the Conrad has sunscreen provided, but it’s still good to have your own, too, the sun in Bora Bora is fierce!), 1 pair of sneakers for the resort gym or walking around the island (I swear by these shoes for travel , they’re sooo lightweight and comfy), sandals, for the ladies, you don’t really need heels but if you like to get dressed up, maybe one pair (I never wore mine I packed though). For the men, lots of chic resort beach button-downs like these.

You’ll also definitely need an underwater camera – all the details on what I use for my underwater photos are in here (and how to get those awesome half in/half out underwater photos you’ve seen on my Instagram )

Hello! I followed you vacation on Instagram and was so jealous, it looked beautiful! I noticed that you discussed the breakfast buffets in the article. Was breakfast included with all your hotel stays? And which was your favorite breakfast?

Hi Robin! Breakfast was included for my rates at each of the hotel, but it depends on the room you book. I would recommend going with a breakfast-included rate because all of the breakfasts were great. FS buffet was not open due to COVID, however, and I’m hoping they change that soon because the other 2 buffets were awesome.

Hi! Do you recommend getting a rental car if we are staying at the FS in Bora bora? Or can you take a water taxi to the other islands? What is the best mode of transportation?

Hi Sarah! It wouldn’t make sense to get a rental car since it’s a private island with no cars. But if you want to explore nearby islands you can set up a tour to pick you up at the resort! I would email the resort for specific recommendations.

' src=

Thanks for all this great info! I was wondering what you thought on bringing our own snorkeling gear with us? My fiancé and I will be staying on Bora Bora and other nearby islands and hoping to do some guided tours but I understand that there’s also lots to see around the resorts. Is it sanitary to use the ones provided?

If you have good gear that fits you well that you like to use, I like to bring it! But it’s totally sanitary and easy to use the hotel’s options as well!

I just returned from our Bora Bora stay at the St Regis and our Moorea stay at the Sofitel. 4 nights in each place. I have been to the Maldives as well. We went all out for our 30th, over the water bungalows at each and included meals. Bora Bora is beautiful, our view every morning with our delivered morning coffee, was so beautiful and relaxing. The food and the service at the St Regis is very good. Not crazy good, but enjoyable. Spa was disappointing and you would expect a nicer pool for a 5 star resort. The island of Bora Bora is not worth visiting, unless you want to check out Bloody Mary’s, it’s run down. Not sure if this was due to lack of tourism for the past couple of years, but there is nothing there worth seeing.

The Sofitel was disappointing, food less then ok, boring pool and the bungalow looked like it was decorated from a 70’s thrift store…. BUT I prefer Moorea over Bora Bora any day ! It is absolutely beautiful, and as mentioned in the post, you will see an abundance of fish, just a jump away from your deck. Amazing, but I would stay at the Hilton and avoid the Sofitel. I also stayed at the Hilton in Tahiti for one night, and both the Sofitel and the St Regis should take a lesson in pool and resort design from the Hilton. Well done. I still prefer the Maldives to French Polynesia, but if you are on the west coast, it’s not that pricey if you go to Moorea and Tahiti. FYI, I paid over $20,000 for 9 nights and BC air.

Travel Guide

Moorea, a condensed polynesian land.

Located less than 30 km from Tahiti, Moorea is the second largest island in the Society Archipelago. Its name refers to ancient beliefs and marvelous stories: the island owes its name to a yellow (= rea) lizard (= mo’o) abandoned by its parents and washed ashore. A land of stories and legends, it is the gateway to Polynesian culture. Its natural landscapes are of great beauty and are enhanced by discreet and quality tourist infrastructures. The island that is called the “sister island” of Tahiti is also very easy to access by plane and boat. Moorea is the ideal destination for a first experience of the beauty of the islands.

About Moorea

Location: Society Archipelago

Area: 134 km²

Population : 17.700 inhabitants

Main City: Afareaitu

From Tahiti: 27 km, 15 mins

Airport: Temae

Why Visit Moorea

Moorea offers a heavenly setting, multiplying colors and contrasts. The turquoise blue of the lagoon blends with the green of the majestic mountains and the white of the fine sand of the beaches. The beauty of the relief is striking. The steep slopes almost entirely covered with vegetation overhang lush forests but also pineapple plantations that will put all your senses to work. This incredible diversity allows fantastic panoramas.

More authentic and wilder, the island can be appreciated in the calm of the natural wonders and the Polynesian culture. After visiting the overflowing Papeete, one appreciates the change of atmosphere and the ambient tranquility. However, the island is far from being cut off from the rest of the world. Moorea lives at the rhythm of a discreet modernity, avoiding for the traveler a too brutal disorientation. The local shops are there and many restaurants of various ranges will satisfy the desires of the most gourmands. In addition, the island offers a wide range of aquatic and pedestrian activities to make your stay unforgettable.

For couples or families, Moorea is the perfect place to start or end your stay in French Polynesia .

Welcome to the Paradise of Polynesia!

The Essentials Of Moorea

1. beaches and lagoon.

Moorea offers some of the most beautiful beaches in Polynesia. Regularly maintained and with sanitary facilities, they are a must-see. Among the most popular beaches on the island, the magnificent public beach of Temae with its white sand provides a breathtaking view of the lagoon. As such, the experience is already unique.

The lagoon benefits from a remarkable biodiversity. It is a protected natural park, where endangered species now find refuge. One can observe coral, crustaceans and mollusks in clear and translucent waters. Further on, black tip sharks and stingrays are doing their usual ballet. At certain times of the year, you can also watch dolphins and whales in the ocean. There is no doubt that this extremely rich underwater fauna is an important asset for Moorea and a must for snorkeling fans.

2. Mountains

On the land side, Moorea offers incredible mountains. No less than eight mountain ranges cover the island’s surface. Mount Tohiea, the highest point, and Mou’a Puta, the famous pierced mountain, rise to more than 1,000 meters and are a reminder of past volcanic activity. In addition, some of the coves with an almost mystical charm are among the most beautiful landscapes in the world.

Even the most inexperienced hikers will find here an adventure ground. One can enjoy the search for remarkable viewpoints. Excursions with flowers and fruits take place in almost unreal landscapes. There is also nothing like venturing into the pineapple plantations which also make the reputation of the island. Hiking in Moorea is a must.

3. Polynesian Culture of Yesteryear and Today

It is undoubtedly on Moorea that the initiation to the Polynesian culture will begin, by discovering in particular its legends. Many inhabitants continue to pass on these heroic tales. The island has several archaeological sites that are relatively easy to access. The ruins of these sanctuaries are an opportunity to learn more about the ancient religious and warrior rites.

Besides the tourist areas in the north of the island, a more authentic life appears along the west and south coasts. Villages follow one another, revealing several beautiful immaculate churches. Everywhere else, the pastel colors of the houses are lost in contact with a rich and green nature. On Moorea, the important thing is to let yourself be surprised.

Moorea benefits from an exceptional natural environment. Its paradisiacal beaches, its lagoon with varied corals and impressive fauna are combined with a vegetation and a relief just as remarkable. It is one of the most complete places in Polynesia and the proximity between the mountains and the lagoon reinforces the contrasts and the immersion.

Given the generosity and diversity of activities, three nights on the island are necessary. For any information, please contact us . More About Moorea

Said to be the inspiration for the mythical Bali Hai, the tiny island of Moorea has managed to hold onto its laid-back charm. About an eighth of the size of nearby Tahiti, Moorea has everything you're hoping for in a South Seas getaway: thick jungles, beautiful beaches, and an azure sea. Two fantastic bays—Opunohu Bay and Cook's Bay—cut into the triangular island's northern side. At 2,929 feet, Mount Rotul stands majestically between the two bays. Several steep, jagged mountain ridges run across the island. Your eyes will be drawn to the thumb-shaped Mount Tohiea, which reaches 3,960 feet into the clouds. Moorea is ringed by a coral reef enclosing a beautiful lagoon, making the island a favorite destination of snorkelers and divers.

A Comprehensive Moorea Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Moorea casts a spell on all who venture here, unveiling a breathtaking landscape of lush mountains, glistening waters, and powdery white sands. From the moment I set foot on its shores, I was captivated by the sheer beauty stunning vistas that unfold at every turn of this South Pacific gem.

Moorea is a place where time seems to stand still, and gentle caress of warm breezes and the symphony of nature’s melodies transport you to a realm of tranquility and rejuvenation.

Exploring Moorea was a true adventure. I hiked through lush rainforests, discovering hidden waterfalls and breathtaking viewpoints. Snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters, I marveled at the kaleidoscope of colors in the vibrant coral reefs, teeming with life. The island’s diverse marine ecosystem is a testament to the importance of conservation efforts.

During my stay, I made it a priority to incorporate sustainable practices into my trip planning. The Polynesian spirit of mālama, meaning to care for and preserve, resonated deeply with me.

I sought out accommodations and activities that aligned with sustainable principles, supporting locally owned businesses that prioritize conservation and respect for the environment. It was inspiring to witness how the local community has embraced sustainable initiatives, from responsible waste management to protecting the delicate coral reefs.

But Moorea is not just about pristine nature; it’s also a vibrant tapestry of culture and traditions. I had the privilege of engaging with the warm and welcoming locals, who shared their customs, dances, and ancient stories. I was fortunate enough to witness captivating cultural performances that showcased the rich heritage of the Polynesian people.

My time in Moorea left an indelible mark on my heart. The island’s beauty, culture, and commitment to sustainability have inspired me to be a more conscious traveler.

By supporting the local economy, respecting the environment, and embracing the rich cultural heritage, we can all find a deeper connection with the island and its people while leaving a positive impact on its fragile environment.

Join me as we dive into the wonders of Moorea, where paradise meets sustainability, and let the magic of this Polynesian gem capture your soul. Trust me, this is a journey you won’t want to miss!

What To Know Before Visiting Moorea

Best time of year to visit moorea.

I visited Moorea in late February, which is considered the off season for French Polynesia. The ‘rainy’ season lasts roughly November through April, which consists of largely sunny days periodically punctuated by short sharp showers.

The extra rain meant that the landscape was extra lush and verdant, and rainbow spotting became a daily occurrence. For us, the only downside was that many hiking trails were much more muddy to the point of not being safely navigable without a guide.

The dry winter season, on the other hand, brings with it more sunshine and the glorious arrival of humpback whales returning from their journey north.

Aside from the rainfall and migration patterns, Moorea’s location near the equator means that there aren’t large deviations between temperature or daylight from one season to the next.

Amount Of Time In Moorea

You can drive the entire length of Moorea in just over an hour, but by no means will you see it all. I spent six days on the island, and it was just enough time to hit the bucket list while still leaving some things to return for.

If you are someone who enjoys exploring the outdoors and water sports, this is a place you could easily spend an extended amount of time in.

I flew directly to Tahiti from San Francisco, and from there took a quick ferry from the capital city Papeete. There are multiple ferries throughout the day in both directions with tons of seats, so unless you’re planning on bringing a car on-board you can just buy your ticket before boarding.

Flights are also available between Tahiti and Moorea, but I much preferred the convenience and flexibility of the ferry.

Getting Around Moorea

Hello Scoot is a phenomenal start up with locations in both Moorea and Tahiti that uses electric scooters that use solar charged batteries. With just a little math and mindfulness, the battery swaps were super easy to coordinate.

Their hourly rates are a bit high, though, so I recommend using Hello Scoot for daily rates or longer. If you’d like to do this, download the app and upload your driver’s license before departing.

What To Wear In Moorea

Moorea is a very casual island. Even the fanciest dresses are paired with sandals here, and I regretted wasting the space in my bag to bring heels.

For all the details on what to bring, check out my style edit for French Polynesia .

The Best Things To Do In Moorea

Captain Taina’s Boat Tour – This was hands down my favourite part of my trip to Moorea. When booking, make sure you choose the full day tour with the glass bottom boat.

The tours themselves are bilingual and are the most comprehensive I found – including swimming with sea turtles, feeding sharks & rays, snorkeling down to sunken tikis, and watching the surfers catch waves while being serenaded with a ukulele. The day ends with a poisson cru cooking lesson for lunch on their own little private motu.

moorea travel agent

Lycee Agricole Opunohu – The local agricultural college, which is on the way up the road to Belvedere Lookout. Everything they serve and sell is grown by the students on-site, including ice creams made from fruit, coffee, and homemade jams.

Keep going up the road and you’ll see a marae on your left before reaching the Belvedere Lookout. There are several hiking trails from the lookout point, but I don’t recommend taking them far without a guide.

moorea travel agent

Snack Mahana – Ask anyone on the island what their favourite restaurant is and they’re likely to tell you this place. This restaurant is only open for lunch and does not take reservations, so try to get there within 90 minutes of opening.

If you have some time to spare, it’s also worth inquiring about the wait time for a table adjacent to the water. Portions here are a bit larger than elsewhere on the island, so you might want to share dishes.

moorea travel agent

Totea Creperie -Nestled within the Hilton’s overwater bungalows renowned for the amount of sharks and rays that gather, this rather romantic spot makes for a great excuse to get all dressed up.

You’ll need to make reservations in advance just to get through the front gates, but I promise this one is worth it. Try to make your reservation for just around sunset and arrive a bit early to take photos along the boardwalk.

Read about my visit to Totea Creperie!

Pearl Shopping – L’Effet Mer is a lovely little shop located in a busy part of town that sells dainty jewelry made from ‘keiki’ pearls and real gold, as well as really cute handmade women’s clothing.

For more classic pearl jewelry, Heivai Black Pearl has a great selection and is next to a kitchy little smoothie shack called Iaorana Smoothies.

moorea travel agent

Snorkeling in Tema’e – I’d argue that this little stretch of beach has the prettiest coral reefs in all of Moorea.

The current along Tema’e runs south towards the Sofitel Resort, so walk up the public side of the beach quite a bit and you can just let the current carry you back down until you reach the bungalows.

More Things To Do In Moorea

Lunch & Snorkel – Choose either Coco Beach (boat transfer) or Plage du Tipaniers (located at the far end of Hotel Les Tipaniers) – or both if you have the time! Both have great lunch options and are at opposite ends of a protected coral area.

On the weekend evenings, Hotel Les Tipaniers will often have live music on their waterfront restaurant to wind down after a long day in the sun.

moorea travel agent

Rotui Factory – Worth stopping by if you’ve caught a rainy afternoon. Aside from juices, they also have a large selection of wines and rums to sample for free in the gift shop.

Pineapple Fields – Take a quick hike around the pineapple fields, called Plateau du Bounty . As you drive up the mountain, you can stop to admire the horses grazing in the field and ancient banyan trees lining the road.

A short hike through the fields here will suffice, and the rough back roads aren’t that much more beautiful to warrant its own journey without a four wheeler.

moorea travel agent

Tiki Show – There are two options for tiki shows on Moorea. The more touristy option is at the cultural centre to the south west of the island that is a little pricey but includes a full dinner buffet.

The second option is a free tiki show at Hotel Manava that came more recommended by locals – you can either book a front row table in advance for dinner or show up early for happy hour and get a table as far in front as you can.

Everyone dresses up really nicely for these shows, regardless of where you end up. Check online for current schedules, as both usually only perform one or two nights per week.

Dr Poole’s Whale Excursion – Eco friendly tour led by a renowned biologist. If you are traveling during whale season definitely try to book this!

Sunset Cruise in a Handmade Outrigger – We didn’t have time for this but I wish we did! Raphael is very easy to contact and book with over whatsapp.

Cabaret Moorea – Aside from stargazing, there usually isn’t too much to do on Moorea once the sun sets. If you’re lucky with your travel dates, you’ll catch a performance from this phenomenal dinner show, founded by two former members of Cirque du Soleil.

Where To Eat In Moorea

Snack Teanahei | This was literally the best meals we had in Polynesia. Look for the sign on the road that says ‘Street Local Food Secret Spot’ and you’ll see the no frills waterside food truck. Make sure you get fries, poisson cru, and a skewer or two.

moorea travel agent

Ke’iki | Trendy dinner spot popular with expats that tends to have a more diverse and french leaning menu.

Iaorana Smoothies | Colourful roadside smoothie shack super healthy smoothies, bowls, and wraps.

moorea travel agent

Green Lodge Moorea | Boutique resort right on the water run by expats with a phenomenal lunch and dinner service using fresh, local ingredients. This is a great spot to stop for a bite after snorkeling in Temae.

Snack Rotui | Casual counter style spot for breakfast and lunch overlooking Cook’s Bay. The restaurant is run by three generations of a Tahitian-Chinese family, and you can try some interesting cross-cultural street food like a chow mein sandwich served on fresh baguette.

Restaurant Le Cook | Swanky waterside spot that is has become immediately popular with local expats. It is a great spot to grab cocktails and watch the sunset during their daily happy hour.

moorea travel agent

Tropical Garden | Stunning views of the bay. Very steep ascent, unless you have a high clearance vehicle I would park at the bottom and work off some of those mai tais with the walk up.

It is a working, family-run farm with lovely honey and jams for purchase and you’re likely to see the matriarch pruning her tiare trees in the morning if you get there early enough.

moorea travel agent

Fish Market and Snack Autea | Truly a hole in the wall kind of place at the southernmost edge of the island, renowned with locals for having some of the best and freshest fish around.

I recommend grabbing your meal to go, and heading to the end of a nearby little local pier (search for Mermaid Private Boat Tours or Tiki Lagoon Moorea on Google Maps and you’ll find it) with a towel and bottle of rotui to watch the sun set.

moorea travel agent

Carameline | Early morning french expat hangout in Moz renowned for their almond croissants. Get there early if you want to try one, because they sell out each day!

O Moana Snack | Beautiful waterside location with panoramic views of Cook’s Bay. The owners are French expats, and serve locally inspired dishes with their own twist on it.

Manuia Grill | Super casual spot that our local friends love with a focus on meats & kebabs if you get sick of eating seafood. It is also conveniently located just across from Manava Hotel for a post-tiki meal.

moorea travel agent

Restaurant Te Honu Iti | Waterside restaurant with french style cuisine that is on the pricier side but with stunning views of Cook’s Bay.

Moz Cafe | Casual eatery that is a great breakfast/lunch stop with good wifi and a nice view of the beach.

Where To Stay In Moorea

Moorea Beach Lodge | Intimate boutique hotel on the island’s ‘sunset coast’ that’s best for quiet vacations and relaxation. Although it’s hard to choose, I think this is my favourite hotel overall on the island.

Read about my stay at Moorea Beach Lodge here!

moorea travel agent

Hotel Les Tipaniers | This little hotel is located on arguably the nicest beach in Moorea, and was in the process of renovating their little villas during our stay. This is an especially great pick for families.

moorea travel agent

Fare Haurevati | Quirky little bed and breakfast run by a young French expat couple in the ‘heart’ of Moorea. It is located on a very residential road with stunning views of the mountains and allows you a peek into everyday Polynesian life. This is a great pick for more adventurous or solo travelers.

Read about my stay at Fare Haurevati here .

moorea travel agent

Haere Mai I Te Fare | Rustic tree house style homestay tucked within a lush tropical forest. A highlight here is the fresh honey and jams harvested by the hosts in the lush backyard gardens.

Cooks Bay Hotel | Recently reopened following two years of extensive renovations, this hotel feels like a slice of Miami-meets-Moorea. In addition to panoramic views of Cooks Bay, the hotel also has a stunning pool and offers complementary snorkeling and kayak equipment for guest use.

Green Lodge Moorea | Casual boutique hotel located right on the water in Tema’e with a dining room worth venturing to. Note that they do not allow children younger than seven years old.

Sofitel Kia Ora | I usually prefer boutiques to larger hotels, but if you’re dreaming of an overwater bungalow experience, this is the best on the island.

Words & Phrases To Know

Ia’Orana (ee-your-rah-nah) is the Polynesian phrase for ‘hello’ or ‘good morning’, and…..

Nana (nah-nah) is the Polynesian phrase for ‘goodbye’

Maruru (mah-roo-roo) is the Polynesian phrase for ‘thank you’.

Manuia (mah-nwee-yah) is ‘cheers’!

Poisson Cru (pwuh-son-crew) is a traditional Polynesian dish that you’ll see everywhere consisting of fish that is flash cured in coconut milk and citrus, similar to ceviche.

Snack refers to any number of casual roadside eateries, similar to how new yorkers call a corner store a bodega.

Roulotte (who-luht) means food truck, and is a huge part of Polynesian dining culture.

Mai Tai (may tay) means something similar to ‘whats up’ and ‘all good, but is also the name of the classic Polynesian cocktail.

Marae ( mah-rah-ay) are ancient temples of the native populations, now unfortunately in ruins due to the french missionaries.

Motu (mow-too) is a small landmass formed from broken coral and shells, like a mini island.

Be Sure To Pack

Flip Flops – This is pretty much the exclusive footwear of choice in Moorea.

Teva Ampsole – I love these as a sandal upgrade for more adventurous pursuits.

Snorkel Mask – Bringing your own set will make your trip so much easier, even if you donate them after the trip. Just make sure to get a pair that are both tempered glass and wide view .

Reef Socks – Both coral and stonefish can be dangerous to brush up against so you’ll want to pack these for any time you’re in the water. I also brought flippers but they were honestly overkill.

Reef Safe Sunscreen – This is so important! Be sure to research whatever sunscreen you bring so that you don’t harm their delicate ecosystem.

A Few More Practical Tips

  • Bring lots of cash! Although it is slowly changing, many places outside resorts do not accept card. Champion Moorea is a large grocery store on the east side of the island where you can pay with USD and receive XPF back if you’re in a pinch
  • Buy bug spray locally once you arrive, it’s formulated for their critters and is far more effective there than what we have stateside.
  • Even if you’re not staying there, I recommend contacting Sara at Fare Haurevaiti if you’d like to do any cultural experiences. She’s a young French expat and can arrange everything from hikes to flower crown making and hula classes.
  • Crime is pretty much non-existent in Moorea. As long as you’re not leaving anything super flashy sitting around, you don’t have to worry about being robbed while you’re in the water.

This post has been updated for 2024! I hope you enjoy your visit to Moorea, and let me know if you discover any more gems I should know about 🙂

We booked directly with the excursion companies. Dr. Poole appreciated us booking directly with him for the dolphin/whale excursion as he has to pay a percentage to the hotel or agent if you book through them. Booking directly means more money goes towards his research projects.

moorea travel agent

I always book direct, and do research on trip advisor first and other reviews, to do an excursion which suits us and highly rated. I have always found it to be cheaper, and better tours than what travel agents and other booking agents offer.

moorea travel agent

Book directly! I booked them online with a company called Moorea Activities Center they were great and saved some money by booking two activities at the same time. Prices are almost the same between each company.

Not sure what Antoine is suggesting when he says to book directly yet used Moorea Activities Center. That is not a direct booking. For a direct booking contact the provider of the excursion directly. It may be possible to save some $$ by using a consolidator or travel agent but in the end the saving in any direction will not be great. That being said you may find booking directly could save $10 or so per person and a consolidator may in fact have the lower price.

I booked my tours with "Moorea Activities Center", thats how the tour company is called, they are not a tour agent or something similar as the name suggests, it's a practically new company. I got a discounted price for combining two activities (atv 3h30m and jet ski 2h) and an additional 10% by booking online. Not sure if I got a better price than other companies but from the reaserch a did before traveling seems like I paid like $30 less (not much but is something) than other companies.

' class=

I book direct or through Alberts not your hotel. I was able to save $50 by going directly to the jetski tour operator on the day of the tour vs. being picked up at my resort, but don't expect a ton of savings on activities. IMO avoid Dr. Poole's tour especially that late in the whale watching season. We usually go in October and spotted one whale for a few seconds then Dr. Poole pointed out the same spinner dolphins and distracted us with gross pictures of a shark that a whale attacked. If whales are active I would go on a cheaper tour rather than Dr. Poole. The Jetski tours are awesome because you are close to the water and stay reasonably cool from the spray. It's guided and controlled, not the typical free-for-all you get on a jetski (I am a 25 year jetski enthusiast, standups and sport skis and I still found it fun). Instead of a tour you might rent kayaks from the rental outfit at Les Tipaniers and they will point you where you can see stingrays and sharks (non-aggressive black tip reef sharks) for pennies compared to a tour. I'll be there Oct 24-29 staying at Club Bali Hai.
