Grape Escape is owned and operated by Greg Beachen. My experience has been gained from many years working in the wine and tourism industry in New Zealand and the UK.

Whilst living in the UK I studied for a degree in Business Management and Tourism at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland. It was during this time that I discovered the wonderful world of wine, whilst working part time in an Oddbins wine store. Oddbins were renowned for their fantastic range of wines and knowledgeable staff, so it seemed like a great place to explore the world of wine. 

Starting and running this business has been one of the most enjoyable things I have done in my life. I credit this to the fact that I found something I was passionate about. Hawkes Bay Wine and Beer Tour details:

Your First Winery is New Zealand's birthplace of Wines, the oldest Winery in New Zealand being the Mission Estate Winery.

The second Winery is a small rustic, boutique Winery set in the countryside producing some fantastic and extremely popular Wines. 

You will taste a great cross-section of wines at this winery. 

The Third Winery is again another boutique Winery. Wine tasting here is set inside a fantastic Wine Cellar. Another highlight of the day.

At the second winery, and the presented order may change on the day, you will be treated to a fantastic and delicious local platter / cheese board to compliment your Wine tasting. 

Time for three beers each to finish.

As the final stop of your Hawkes Bay Wine and Beer Tour, you will visit an Ale House located in the Historic Part of Napier close to Restaurants, and entertainment. Here you can choose three glasses of Beer each from their extensive range. Yes, glasses not small tasting portions.

A pleasant ramble along flat terrain, cycling 14 km. Allow 3 to 4 hours.

Brown ride on map. From our base five minute cycle to Mission Estate Winery then to Penny Madden Ceramic Studio. A kilometer  down the road is  Church Road Winery.  Cycle through the picturesque    suburb of Taradale  to Silky Oak Chocolates, returning via EIT Pathway to Guppy Road on your way back  to Bike About Tours

Walking loop Lock  bikes at Church Road Winery: Walk via Tironui Drive to Sugar Loaf Reserve Walkway which takes you to the summit for fantastic views, return via Halliwell’s Walkway to Church Road Winery – allow 30 minutes return.

Attractions Nevaria Lavender, Pottery & Wood Artists,  Pathways, Golf tree stump carvings, Otatara Historic Pa Site, and Anderson Park for the kids – fabulous pathways within the park area.

TRAIL 505: PUKETAPU LOOP

A very popular Family Trail cycling the Tutaekuri Riverbanks on way to explore the quaint village of Puketapu.

Visit Mission Estate,  Church Road  and Moana Park Wineries, Puketapu Hotel and Duke of Gloucester.   A great choice of places to eat that offer  indoor or outdoor areas to soak up the atmosphere depending on the weather.

Optional:  Day Light Saving excursion from 3pm to 7pm.  stop of and have dinner at the pub! ( your cost) 

The terrain is  flat. Puketapu Loop is   25km   and  29km if you visit Silky Oak Chocolates.  14kms one way from Puketapu Pub

Your taste buds will enjoy the wine and beverages, amazing  food and presentation that is crafted by expert chefs and is extremely tasty.   Visit Church Road, Mission Estate and Moana Park Wineries.  The quaint Puketapu Village has lots to offer-  Puketapu Hotel is worthy of your presences they serve  am or pm teas, lunch and dinners.  Historic Puketapu Church and Puketapu Park for a ride on the flying fox.

On the way to Silky Oak Chocolates you can visit  Otatara Pa Site – you will be well rewarded – great views from the top of the hill.  Pottery, Wood Artists & Nevaria Lavender.  On the way back to base either ride the pathway from EIT to Guppy Road or  call into the Duke of Gloucester  –  a family friendly pub with an amazing outdoor area to sit and relax in the shade.  From here 2kms back to Bike About Tours.

Mission & Church Road Wineries are two well established older wineries in Hawkes Bay – approximately 1km apart  – both worthy of a visit, passionate about the wines they produce and the amazing lunch menus prepared for you to enjoy!   You can dine in or outdoors depending on the weather – your choice.  Both wineries offer winery tours – I am sure there is one to suit your time span, refer pdf for options and cost.   The longer ride;  9.08kms takes you off road for 2 kms on a pathway in a secluded area beside the stream to the suburb of Taradale to complete the loop and return to Bike About Tours base.

TRAIL 507: AHURIRI WILDLIFE ESTUARY MISSION WINERY

Your ride takes you on an adventure  – the majority of land  was water prior to the Napier  Earthquake of 1931. Cycle through  suburbs, peaceful country side,  view the  wildlife estuary, maybe watch a plane or two landing on the runaway at Napier Airport  – If  you wish  stop off at Mission Estate Winery on your way back to base

The majority of the land you will be riding on today became dry land after 1931 earthquake, it was part of the Ahuriri Inner Harbour. Cycling your way through Tamatea Suburb along side Salt Water Creek Pathway you will pass lots of homes, gardens and Park Island Sports Grounds. Once you are on the pathway beside the Lagoon Farm an abundance of peace and tranquility  the only noise that will interrupt your thoughts will be aeroplanes landing on the runaway at the busy Napier Airport which is on the other side of the long narrow Ahuriri Wildlife Estuary which supports an extremely diverse range of birds fish, invertebrates and plant life. Once back on Church Road Pathway if you wish stop of at Mission Estate Winery before returning to our base at Greenmeadows.

TRAIL 508: WINE, ALE & CIDER

1.7kms to 2kms from our base at Greenmeadows are two historic wineries,  a very popular family pub in Taradale  for Cider, Beer and other beverages – then  a ride in the country to the Filter Room & Café  where  beer and cider are made on site  – further down the country lane is Hawke’s Bay’s oldest boutique winery whose owners are very passionate about the wine they produce.

 You decide the distance you want to ride   6.6kms  or 13.8km or 22kms

You have the option of cycling both ways or one way – or being dropped off at two different points to shorten your ride!

Ideal for families – 90% of this ride is off-road and river bank  pathways. Fantastic scenery, rivers, sea, estuaries, lots of cycle bridges to cross.  Passing through Haumoana Village where you have a 2 km cycle by road  to the cycle pathway beside the sea that will take you to the Te Awanga Village  where you will find four wineries  to visit depending on the time of year,   three wineries offer  delicious  menus.  The local pub and Hygge Cafe which  is situated close by the sea at road end are both great options to visit.   Art & Craft outlets to explore and  lots more.

Drop off  in the village  of Havelock North,  a   2.8km  bike ride   that is  flat terrain  with a  slight elevation when cycling through  the picturesque suburb of Havelock North on way to the outskirts of the village  where you will find a cluster of 5 to 6  wineries and three activities to explore.

You have the option of being collected at a time and place that suits you best, or continue your ride for 7.7kms  along the Riverbank cycle pathway which follows the majestic Tuki Tuki River  viewing farmlands, horticulture, orchards, vineyards,  collection from Black Bridge car park.

A little history:  Havelock North was founded by the government in the late 1860 to provide land for small farmers and working-class settlers. Like other towns in the region, its growth was restricted by large pastoral stations on its fringes. The first orchards appeared in the 1870s, but they were not common until the early 20th century. Bernard Chambers established the first vineyard (Te Mata Estate Winery) in 1892. Subdivision of pastoral land from 1898 enabled the town to expand. The township was named after British general Sir Henry Havelock to commemorate his role in suppressing a rebellion against British power in India.  Today there is six well known wineries and three places of interest to visit that will fill in your days adventure

TRAIL 719 HAVELOCK NORTH & : KIDNAPPERS COAST

  Terrain is flat  for your cycling adventure today – mostly designated on and off road pathways.  

In amongst  the rolling country side on the Havelock North boundary you will find  a cluster of  5 to 6 wineries and 3 activities to explore, then onto the cycle pathway  which follows the  majestic  Tuki Tuki River. On arrival at Black Bridge cross the river via the cyclist bridge then make your way to Kidnappers Coast pathway cycling  through the estuary,   the  river on your left and onto the open sea, take time at the end of this pathway to view Napier in the distance.  Time to explore the popular  Kidnappers Coast with its spectacular coastal views, wineries, gourmet delights pub and Hygge Cafe, Art & Craft outlets as you cycle through the quaint villages of Haumoana and Te Awanga…
