Trip Report – 12 Day Pantanal Tour with Naturetrek/SouthWild -July/August 2016.

Whilst we have been to Brazil before, this was our first adventure (with Naturetrek, a UK based company), into the Brazilian Pantanal to see Jaguars, and the other wildlife which the Pantanal is rich in, including giant river otter, caiman, tapir, giant anteater, capybara and abundant birds.

Brief Tour Overview.

All the Brazilian land based organisation was provided by Southwild, who’s representatives met us at Cuiabá.

There were 6 guests on our tour, which is much less than the usual group sizes of around 10, or more from previous reports..

Our adventure started in London UK, flying, via São Paulo, to Cuiabá in central-western Brazil. From here we travelled in a mini-bus and then a custom-built safari truck following the Transpantaneira road to Pouso Alegre where we stayed for two nights.

From Pouso Alegre we travelled south along the Transpantaneira Road to Porto Jofre, again in the custom-built safari truck. Upon reaching Porto Jofre, we took to the water and cruised upriver to the Jaguar Flotel (a floating hotel) where we were based for four nights. We followed a routine of morning and afternoon boat safaris to explore the Cuiabá, Three Brothers, Piquiri Rivers and other waterways.

Returning to Porto Jofre we reboarded our safari truck and retraced our steps along the dusty Transpantaneira road to our final destination, the SouthWild Pantanal Lodge, where we spent three nights.

We then returned to Cuiabá to begin the long journey back to London, via São Paulo.

We visited the last week of July, first week of August and the weather was perfect. We had no rain during our time in the Pantanal and the midday temperatures were bearable (still hot though!) There were still a few mosquitoes around but not many, with hardly any seen in our rooms at night time.

Tour Leader Guide

Our tour leader guide was Naun Amable Silva (SouthWIld) - Naun was a really good guide with an excellent knowledge of birds & the other Pantanal wildlife. He balanced his time between tour guests and made himself available for questions in between boat, walks & safari drives, eating with or near the group. A keen photographer himself, he was willing to share tips on camera settings to help the group.

Accommodation.

The lodges were all of an acceptable standard, the first, Pouso Alegre, being the most basic (no mosquito nets, but the room did have air conditioning). The best accommodation was the Jaguar Flotel.

The food was pretty basic but plentiful at all lodges – buffet style with limited choices, one or two meat dishes, fresh vegetables, potatoes, rice & beans.

All lodge rooms, including the Flotel had en-suite toilets & showers.

Wildlife viewing.

Wildlife viewing was mostly done from a safari vehicle with open sides & by boat, with three guided walks (one at the first lodge & two at the last lodge). All wildlife viewing from the Jaguar Flotel was done via boat.

Wildlife viewing was the top priority each day, with little downtime for relaxing… not a problem for us at all as that’s what we like.

Overall the tour was well organised, the guide really good, the accommodation as described and the wildlife viewing excellent.

We have also a trip report, with more detail and many photographs on our website, link below.

http://www.wmtravellers.com/trip-reports/just-jaguars-2016/

I will also provide a link for each block of days in the Trip Report.

Hope others find it useful and interesting.

Well the tour we took is here:

http://www.naturetrek.co.uk/website/tour.aspx?id=41

i'm pretty certain you could probably undercut that by booking things direct and putting a DIY trip together. I looked into it at the start but decided I could not be bothered relative to the short duration we were taking and the focus which was really just 'must see Jaguars.'

Thank you for writing such a great report. I am going with nature treks just jaguar tour in July and am really keen to see this area with its wonderful wildlife. I usually safari in Botswana so this will be a complete change. I am hoping to get some good reference photos of Jaguars for paintings. yours look amazing! Thanks for all the useful advice.

Thanks for the comments. Hope you enjoy the trip as much as we did and you get the shots your after. 😀

naturetrek trip reports

""" I usually safari in Botswana so this will be a complete change"""

Oh yes, it will be very different.

In Botswana as in all countries of the southeast of africa, the wildlife will come to you. You just have to drive around.

Not so in the Pantanal. Here you have to search actively for wildlife. Otherwise you'll see only birds, but lots of them.

We just came back from our 4-weeks self drive trip here. All game drives we did with guides. But we were very dissapointed about animal viewing. Maybe the wrong time of the year?

Sure, we have seen a Jaguar and a few other animals, like Otter or Leguans or big Lizards. But not as much as we expected.

naturetrek trip reports

i completely second Reise Beate's comments... so that you adjust your expectations...

been 2x to southern Africa (once to private lodge near Kruger... second time on extensive camping trip thru most of Namibia and Botswana)... and you cant begin to compare the wildlife you see there to what you see in Brazil...

Brazil is not land of loads of large wild mammals... and just like leopard spotting can be elusive in Africa, same happens here with jaguars... though some of the top-end guides in northern Pantanal seem to have much better odds of spotting them...

Brazil is great for birds, for those into the very diverse forest species (the average person will think it all kind of looks the same though...)

capybaras are no big deal to find... heck, one can find some even here in the Tiete and Pinheiros rivers in the heart of SP metro area lol;;; they are hardy animals...

this link shows a video with pics of capybaras suntanning near the bike path on the banks of Pinheiros river (there is even a sign for bikers to watch out for capybaras crossing the path...):

https://youtu.be/nt5QDEV8nhk

Hi Rokatoo.

In fairness I think it was Beates expectations that needed management rather than cjnali’s. They have already said they expect it to be a complete change to Botswana.

Probably by putting in the research as we did, and picking a trip with a good chance of getting decent sightings of jaguar, as it sounds like that is the focus as it was for us.

Valiantsontour, why do you write such things? My expectation doesn't need "management".

We where always told, Pantanal is the Serengeti of Southamerica, so we expectet almost the same as in Serengeti. But we learnt, that this sentence only is a good promotion.

Pantanal is NOT the Serengeti, Pantanal is different. And that is what I pointet out in # 14.

This doesn't mean Pantanal is not worth the trip. No, it is worth every day you can stay there, but not with the promoted title "Serengeti of Southamerica".

I wrote a TR, but it is in german, so it is not so interesting here. But on this TR you could see that it was a very interesting trip for us.

Lol...........I think you just answered your own question!

<<We where always told, Pantanal is the Serengeti of Southamerica, so we expectet almost the same as in Serengeti. But we learnt, that this sentence only is a good promotion>>

About the company.

Who are we?

Naturetrek operates the largest selection of professionally organised, expert-led wildlife holidays and tours in the world. We’ve been organising specialist wildlife tours for over 25 years.

What do we do?

We enjoy taking you to see the world’s special wildlife and places. Staffed by wildlife enthusiasts and dedicated travel professionals, we are passionate about organising outstanding, competitively priced, responsible wildlife experiences around the world.

Our programme of holidays includes bird watching and botanical tours, bear, whale and tiger watching holidays plus a variety of wildlife-orientated treks, conservation tours and expedition cruises to some of the most spectacular regions on Earth.

Where are we based?

Based in rural Hampshire in south-central England, we occupy a characterful converted barn in the village of Chawton, near the market town of Alton.

All of Naturetrek’s staff offer a friendly, flexible and expert service. Most have been with the company a long time and know the trade inside out. All our staff have a very keen interest in natural history, conservation and travel, and we pride ourselves on the extremely personal and knowledgeable service we offer you. You can find details about individual members of staff below - simply click on the person's name to reveal their details.

Visiting us

Naturetrek's head office occupies a beautiful barn conversion set amongst a pleasant 12-acre grassland site in the village of Chawton, just a few minutes’ drive from the market town of Alton.

As well as discussing your travel plans with us, there’s a lot to do in the nearby towns and villages and their surrounds. Chawton Cottage, where Jane Austen lived for the last eight years of her short life, is a popular tourist attraction that is open to the public year-round. The magnificent Elizabethan manor, Chawton House, the former home of Jane Austen's brother, is now a museum of women's literature and is also open to the public, together with its gardens. Both are just a short walk from Mingledown Barn.

A few miles away lies the village of Selborne, made famous through the writings of its curate in the late 18th century, the Reverend Gilbert White, the founding father of natural history studies in Britain with his Natural History of Selborne. He created the famous 'zig-zag' walk up the Hanger, a striking escarpment supporting a woodland of towering Beech trees that can be seen from Mingledown Barn. Nearby, too, is Noar Hill Nature Reserve, a complex of ancient chalk pits supporting a rich variety of orchids and other downland flowers, plus a wealth of butterflies, from its Duke of Burgundies in May to its Brown Hairstreaks in late summer.

Excellent and well-organised birding holiday enjoyable for the birder and non-birder.

Birding in such a beautiful area with two experts to help is a great experience and just the number of lifers and year-birds seen was brilliant.. Even my wife, a less keen birder, thoroughly enjoyed it. Good mix of habitats. Good accommodation for the area. Well organised itinerary,

Byron was an excellent birding guide with detailed local knowledge and found us so much. Andy also helped a great deal. Both took the time to show us clearly where to look and what to look for. Andy managed the breakdown on the motorway with great coolness and ensured the safety of the group. It was great that both were fluent Spanish speakers.

Colourful wildlife cheers up those winter blues

I went on a bird watching holiday to Colombia with Naturetrek. We were well looked after and had fabulous local guides who really knew their birds and habitats. All the lodges and hotels came up with interesting meals - not always the case for us vegetarians.

Naturetrek specialises in tours focusing on wildlife and birds. Terrain can be difficult so the trips are graded - so you know what's expected. They make a point of using local guides - for both their knowledge but also to ensure money goes into the local economy. Any issues are responded to personally and speedily.

great wildlife holiday

spring large bird migration strait of gibraltar included othe flora and fauna . lovely rural hote, excelletnt guides

Another great Naturetrek birdwatching break!

An excellent weekend in the New Forest, great leader and company and superb bird sightings - can't wait until my next trip with them to Spain now!

They combine wonderful destinations with exemplary, highly efficient service.

Out of this world

Fantastic from start to finish. Each wildlife encounter was beyond expectations, the food was delicious, the guides were so knowledgeable.

A personal touch with responses to emails all the way through.

Time of my life!

From beginning to end this was the trip of a lifetime and I literally had the time of my life. Hitherto, I’d never been to South America, nor indeed the Southern Hemisphere, and so the sights, sounds, wildlife and history of Buenos Aires, Tierra del Fuego, Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica were breathtakingly wonderful. Hitherto, I’d never been to South America, nor indeed the Southern Hemisphere, and so the sights, sounds, wildlife and history of Buenos Aires, Tierra del Fuego, Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica were breathtakingly wonderful. Amongst a wealth of wildlife, I saw eight types of penguin, six species of albatross, a plethora of cetaceans and seals, and all at close quarters in brilliant scenery and company. We also saw the beach on Elephant Island from where Sir Ernest Shackleton set off on his perilous journey to South Georgia to seek rescue for his crew.

Naturetrek are an impressive operator, providing excellent information and support before and during the holiday, and superb feedback afterwards. The tour guides were extremely friendly, helpful and attentive to the the needs, requests and enquiries of participants. Their knowledge and expertise was incredible, across a whole range of taxa, whilst their enthusiastic delivery was perfectly pitched to, and appreciated alike by, people with a wide range of wildlife experience, from enthusiastic newcomers to fellow experts.

Cuba is a fabulous country to visit: beautifully varied countryside; amazing wildlife; friendly, kind people; incredible history; stunning beaches; vibrant music; a beautiful capital - La Habana and so much more. However - Cuba needs all the support that it can get as the current situation of economic sanctions and Covid have taken their toll. Our twelve day tour of Cuba was incredibly varied and precision planned, with an outstanding tour leader - Byron Palacios: 2 nights Villa Soroa - visiting Sierra de las Portales and Che Guevara's cave, Hacienda Cortina and parkland, Las Terrazas; 3 nights Playa Giron - visiting Zapata Biosphere Reserve and surrounding area (savannah, woodland and marsh - walks and birding); 1 night Camaguey - visited Che Guevara's mausoleum enroute 3 nights Cayo Coco - visiting Najasa NP; Sierra de Chorillos; Cuban cigar presentation enroute. Birding outings to Cayo Guillermo, Cayo Paredon, Cueva del Jabali ... 1 night La Habana: fabulous guided walking tour of this amazing city, with a drink and magical music in El Floridita (Ernest Hemmingway's favourite bar) and a tasty traditional Cuban lunch at 'Dona Eutimia', followed by a visit to 'Plaza de la Revolucion'.

Naturetrek - we have travelled with this outstanding wildlife company many times to places including: Central Spain; Central India; Kazakhstan; Georgia; Cuba, and will continue to do so in the future. We are usually independent travellers, however if we want to see wildlife in a more 'remote/off the beaten-track' country we always travel with Naturetrek. Naturetrek takes the stress and hard work out of a holiday: Their itineraries are extremely detailed; pre-departure information is very thorough; office staff are very helpful; tour leaders are knowledgeable in many fields; local guides are well organised and knowledgeable; accommodation is usually characterful and in good locations; transport throughout is usually seamless; cost is comparable with other wildlife companies ..... What more can I say.

Amazing birds of Taiwan

Led by a highly skilled and dedicated guide, we visited a number of coastal and forested mountain locations in search of wintering and endemic birds. We saw most of the latter, were well-looked after by our knowledgeable guide, and had some very tasty Taiwanese cuisine. The Taiwanese people were very friendly and welcoming, and seemed to appreciate us visiting their beautiful country.

The pre-tour admin and booking process by Naturetrek was very smooth and efficient.

Our portfolio of Day Trips visit a wonderful selection of reserves and habitats across the UK, each guided by one of our expert naturalist tour leaders, many of whom are guiding you on their own ‘local patch’! Meeting at around 9am, and exploring largely on foot until around 5pm (though note that specific Day Trip timings do vary slightly by location and season), these trips are designed to spend a full day out in the fresh air, in search of a wide range of special British wildlife.

Whether you would like to explore a new area in the company of a local, expert naturalist tour leader, try a guided wildlife day out for the very first time, or perhaps you simply wish to spend the day learning more about your own local wildlife, you will find yourself most welcome on one of our Naturetrek Day Trips. We also offer days out specifically aimed at beginner birders and amateur wildlife photographers, and some trips even extend after sunset to allow us to take you on a guided tour of the night skies above. Whatever the trip focus – be it birds, botany, fungi, photography, butterflies, dragonflies, geology or a mix of just about everything – your leader will take you to the very best places to search for wildlife, and will share their knowledge generously along the way.

The idea of day trips during these Covid restrictions is brilliant. There’s a good range to choose from, all over the country. They are clearly described and easy to book – and excellent value. All of the tour leaders we’ve had are at the top of their game – not only are they expert naturalists, but they are well organised, know the area, and are very good interacting with the guests.

How to Book

The price for all our standard Naturetrek Day Trips is  £50 per person  and payment is by debit card only. You can book online, or you are very welcome to book over the phone by calling us on 01962 733051. Some Day Trips operate seasonally, and we are continuing to add additional departure dates for our fully booked Day Trips, so if you would like to be added to our wait list for any of these trips please just email  [email protected]  or register your interest via the tour page.

Joining Instructions for Day Trips

  • Upon booking we will email you with a designated meeting point and confirmed timings, along with contact details for your tour leader.
  • During some Day Trips we will each use our own vehicle to move the short distances in between sites (group transport is not provided).
  • Please do not bring your dog, or other pets, as they may disturb the wildlife!
  • Please bring your own lunch.
  • Please bring plenty of water, snacks, hand sanitiser, tissues, your own face covering (should you wish to wear one for entering toilets, visitor centres etc.) along with anything else that you might need for the day. You will need to be able to carry everything yourself. Suitable footwear (walking shoes or walking boots) will be essential, along with sensible layers and waterproofs plus sun hat and sun cream or woolly hat and gloves etc., depending on the weather forecast.
  • Wherever possible, we will try to arrange comfort breaks during the day. On some of our more remote Day Trips this isn’t always possible, and on those occasions you will need to be prepared for the odd ‘bush stop’! If this is likely, we will alert you in the joining instructions beforehand. Please be stringent with hygiene when using public facilities.
  • Finally, please do share your photos and favourite wildlife sightings with us … we love seeing them! Tweet  @naturetrektours , Instagram  @naturetrek_wildlife_holidays  or find us on  facebook.com/naturetrekwildlifeholidays
