Many designer and niche brands produce perfumes that gain a monumental fanbase, and it eventually leads to them producing many flankers of the original.

While some of the flankers fail to sustain, a few of them manage to gather more followers than the original.

Two, I will compare perfumes – Voyage and Voyage N-83 by Nautica, an original and its flanker- to find out which has a better scent and which has a better performance.

So, if you have been confused about which one to get between these two, then read till the end.

Nautica Voyage

Main Notes: Apple, Green Leaves, Lotus, Mimosa, Musk, Cedar, Oakmoss and Amber.

Launched in 2006, Voyage was created by Maurice Roucel. Voyage has an air of late spring and early summer. It is a perfume for the sea. However, one that has a distinct aquatic, summertime vibe.

Compared to other Nautica fragrances, it has a less oceanic aroma. Voyage is gentler and more influenced by the woods. Amber lingers in the background, adding a touch of warmth to the scent. Rather than having only an oceanic scent, Voyage has a crisp, aqueous aroma.

Nautica Voyage N-83

Main Notes: Sea Notes, Spicy Mint, Petitgrain, Lavender, Cardamom, Nutmeg, Musk, Sandalwood and Cedar

Voyage N-83 is a flanker of the popular Voyage by Nautica, and it was launched in 2013.

The “sea tones” give N-83 a distinct oceanic aroma when it first starts up. It seems less similar to the first Voyage to me. Despite having an aquatic feel, this one is sharper than the original.

N-83 is a change from the original Voyage, which included citrus fruit notes such as orange; nonetheless, it still opts to go with something that is crisp and clean, with undertones of musk and soft lavender.

Now that you know a basic summary of the scents and their main accords let’s dig into the scents and find out how they compare.

Here is my thorough comparison between Nautica Voyage and Nautica Voyage N-83:

Even though they are both aquatic fragrances, there is a notable difference between the opening of Voyage and N-83.

Apple, watery, mimosa, and some overt musk notes are present in the opening of Voyage. It has a perfume that is generally associated with cucumber or dew—a cold, watery scent. It smells faintly aquatic but not marine.

The aroma has a green/floral undertone with damp moss and lotus/mimosa underneath all of it.

On the other hand, in the case of N-83, a cold, spicy mint with a tinge of petitgrain greets you at the top. At first, it smells slightly herbal with lighter musk, and the oceanic note pervades the entire composition.

So, which one has a more appealing opening?

Simply put, Nautica Voyage is more perceptible and enjoyable. You immediately detect a crisp, watery apple aroma with a touch of sweetness.

The distinctive addition of mimosa, cedar, and musk further distinguished Voyage.

So, in terms of opening scent, Voyage is more impressive than its flanker, N-83.

Though not particularly strong, Voyage is perceivable and projects fairly effectively.

However, the range of N-83 is somewhat constrained, and it has a tendency to be on the weaker side. It doesn’t fully fade away after five minutes, but it isn’t particularly strong either.

While not the biggest offender, N-83 falls short of what Voyage offers. So, between the two, Voyage has a better projection.

In the case of projection, I have noticed a similar trend. Voyage lasts evidently longer than N-83.

While Voyage can last anywhere between 5 to 7 hours, N-83 usually lasts for 3 to 6 hours max.

So, which one performs better?

In terms of projection and longevity, Voyage performs better than its flanker, N-83, in both cases. 

Many people use fragrance to leave a positive impression on others. Some of us have an unwavering desire to spread our perfumes, hoping that others will like them as much as we do.

We all enjoy hearing about how great a perfume smells; therefore, it only makes sense to compare the compliment factors of the two perfumes, Voyage and Voyage N-83.

From what I have noticed, strangers have given both scents favorable reviews. Since they are clean and have aquatic scents, they are quite likable, especially in hot summers.

However, since Voyage has a fruity touch to it, it tends to grab people’s attention more effectively, earning you more compliments than its flanker.

Hence, when comparing how many compliments each perfume gets you, Voyage has the upper hand and is more likely to get you a lot of praise compared to N-83.

Both of these are fantastic everyday scents that make you smell wonderful wherever you wear them. I actually wouldn’t classify either as a date-night scent, though Voyage would have somewhat of an upper hand in this case.

Since N-83 is less overpowering, it might be a marginally superior workplace fragrance. Voyage isn’t too loud and can also be worn to work.

In terms of affordable scents, both Voyage and N-83 are really useful. No, neither product is of extremely high quality, but they can be very handy.

In conclusion, both of them are equally versatile.

When choosing between two perfumes, comparing their prices is essential to figure out which one is giving you the best product at a cheaper price. In other words, comparing their value for the price.

Now, Nautica is known for producing great fragrances at an affordable price, and these two perfumes are no exception.

The price of Nautica Voyage Eau De Toilette is $18.90 for the size 3.4 fl oz / 100 ml. On the other hand, Voyage N-83 Eau De Toilette costs around $23.88 for the same size.

As you can see, there is no big difference between their prices, and both are quite budget-friendly. However, when compared, the price of Nautica Voyage is somewhat less than N-83.

Nonetheless, the prices of these fragrances vary quite a bit from store to store and website to website, so I suggest you list out and compare the prices on different websites and buy the one that offers the best deal.

So, which one offers the best value for the money between Voyage and N-83?

Even though both are affordable, by comparing the prices, it is evident that Voyage offers the best value for money between these two perfumes as the same size Voyage is cheaper than N-83. 

Finally, it’s time to compare these two perfumes’ scent profiles and overall scent. To be honest, both Voyage and N-83 have decent overall scents.

N-83 is an excellent fragrance, yet, it is quite linear in nature and lacks any truly outstanding qualities. Because of the lavender note, it has a pleasant and fresh aroma that can be described as marine, soapy, and silky.

On the other hand, Voyage is aquatic with a wonderful citrus smell; it has been a customer favorite for a very long time and continues to be our top selling.

While N-83 is most likely not even among the top Nautica colognes, Voyage is a wonderful addition to the collection of anybody who wears it because of its affordable price and a pleasant aroma.

It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Voyage is Nautica’s finest production.

Since both of these are reasonably priced, you might as well get both of them if you want some diversity in your life. If I could only choose one, it would have to be Voyage.

So, I must say that in the case of overall scent, Voyage is the winner.

Both Nautica Voyage and Nautica Voyage N-83 are wonderful scents from the same line. While the flanker, N-83, is quite aromatic, the original smells much better to my nose.

The oceanic fragrance with the added citrus notes feels bright and rejuvenating. The oakmoss, amber and cedar ground the perfume and tie all the accords together, creating a fine balance.

However, which one you decide to opt for depends solely on your preferences.

I just recently purchased Nautica voyage N83 because I liked the original Nautica voyage so much. And to my surprise I think I like n83 better what are your thoughts?

I too prefer N-83. Voyage was super plain and blah to me. Like a body wash that lasts for a few hours.

I'm really not a fan of nautica. I like a couple and sampled only to find out they don't dry down well, and they don't last past an hour.

I've tried most of Nautica's stuff, except the some of the newer releases, and pretty much everything has been unremarkable or even slightly memorable. Voyage gets a lot of love because it's a cheapy done by a high profile perfumer who has some expensive fragrances in his repertoire. I agree with the many though, it is bland and boring. A sour apple aquatic just doesn't do the trick for me. It's too "calone-y" and smells cheap to me. There's no spice, woods, or musks balancing it out, it's just a bunch of synthetic smelling fruits and aquatic chemicals.. but if that's your thing, Voyage does a good job.. great longevity and projection. I haven't heard much on N-83 though. I really haven't even though about trying to sniff it out, being that most of the flankers have been disappointing to me. I think Sunset Voyage is pretty stand out and different, but I've been through a couple bottles of it, so I don't find it as interesting as I once did. I think Island Voyage is pretty horrible.. I had a sample of it I think when it came out.. I recall it being a watered down take on the original, with a little bit of change, but very forgettable scent. There's also a newer flanker called Summer Voyage, which I haven't seen anyone talk about or review. Nautica is sort of a miss house to me. I do like the original (which most people despise). All of their fragrances go for the ocean theme, and usually just fail miserably.

I have heard the n83 longevity is bad, but I really like the smell. It is a little more interesting.

I immediately returned a gift of N-83. Hated it. Voyage is much more refined and sophisticated, IMO.  

I liked the original blue juice back in the day. Clean and fresh. It was a good option when the heavy stuff got tiresome, kinda like Cool Water.

Nautica Voyage N83 Review

Another flanker in the Nautica line, N83 cologne falls in line with all of the other aquatic fragrances. There are several of these, and we are looking at Voyage N83. This Nautica for men designer cologne is easy to obtain, and is still in production.

It is similar to Voyage, and it carries the same aquatic feel to it with the musk dry down. Let’s take a look at a review of Nautica N83.

What Does Voyage N83 Smell Like?

Nautica N83 opens with notes of citrus, spice and petitgrain, so it is more fresh, and spicy than the original. It also has a hint of mint along with scents of the ocean. It misses on the floral notes like Blue has, and it is more of a spicy lavender. It dries down to woods and musk. The dry down is a strong synthetic musk smell. The musk is typical with the Nautica flankers.

Overall, it is a minty fresh aquatic fragrance that smells nice . Most men and women will enjoy smelling this. It is mass-appealing, and there is not much to dislike about it.

It is similar to Nautica Voyage Sport because it is a fresh fragrance. However, Sport gets it from citrus like bergamot.

Top Notes: Sea notes, Spice, Petitgrain

Middle Notes: Nutmeg, Lavender, Cardamom

Base Notes: Musk, Cedar, Sandalwood

Presentation

Voyage N83 comes in a 3.3 oz / 100 ml glass bottle with a silver capstan cap. There is also a compass icon on the bottle. The fragrance is a light purple color.

The bottle comes in a nice sturdy dark blue box with a compass design overlayed onto a map.

The longevity for Voyage N83 is moderate to weak. I can get a few hours off of it, but many others say they cannot even get that long. Of course, this will depend on your body chemistry, location, weather, etc. I wouldn’t expect to get over 6 hours for most people.

In my experience, spraying Nautica cologne on your clothes seems to last longer than on your skin.

For a cologne under $20 poor longevity is to be expected.

The sillage is light to moderate. I can get around 30 minutes where people within a few feet can smell it. After that, it becomes an intimate skin scent. Most reviews point out similar levels of sillage and longevity as well.

You can get this cologne online for under $20 usually. It is also available at discount brick and mortar stores. I also believe that Wal Mart carries it.

Nautica N83 vs. Voyage

If you compare Voyage N83 to the original Nautica Voyage you can smell some similarities.

Nautica Voyage is the more popular scent. That doesn’t mean that N83 is bad, it is not.

Both of these fragrances are clean, fresh, and aquatic. They are both mass appealing, and easy to wear. Most guys like the way they smell, but they are not unique.

Both of these fragrances have similar cost of under $20 for a 100 ml bottle. When it comes to wearing them, they are interchangeable. I would not suggest using one over the other for any specific occasion.

When it comes to longevity, Nautica Voyage outperforms N83 . This will last longer and it has better projection over Voyage N83.

Nautica N83 smells more minty, salty, and aquatic. Nautica Voyage smells more green and citrusy.

Overall, both of these colognes for men smell great. However, I prefer Nautica Voyage over Voyage N83 if I had to choose one. The great news is that are both very affordable, so it is easy to get them both.

In this edition of a head to head men’s fragrance match up, we have the ever popular Nautica Voyage vs. Voyage Sport, it’s later released flanker fragrance. Does Sport carry on the Voyage name and surpass the original or does it flop completely?

Nautica Voyage Sport

The original Voyage has a rather cold, crisp aroma that you would usually associated with a chilled cucumber. The composition opens with apple, mimosa, and musk notes.

The musk is pretty prominent and Voyage has a green/floral undertone of dewy oak moss, lotus, and that mimosa. The opening is actually my least favorite part of the fragrance, but it does get better.

Voyage Sport, doesn’t do itself any favors in the head to head, with its own opening. It’s kind of messy and runs together. What I get is citrus notes, musk, and some of that familiar alcohol smell from cheaper colognes.

It settles down after a few minutes and the citrus is joined by spice of coriander and green peppercorn. It has some salt water oceanic elements, spice, and that citrus zest.

Which is better? Even if it isn’t my favorite, I’ll take the original Voyage over sport in the one. It’s just much more pleasant and well done, than Sport, which takes a while to work itself out.

Edge: Voyage

Nautica Voyage isn’t a beast in terms of sillage, it’s moderate, but performs well overall for a scent of this category and price. Meanwhile, Sport is just mediocre.

On me, it’s pretty much just a skin scent, and doesn’t project at all. Shame. This has happened with a lot of the Voyage flankers, I wish that they could have some kind of close to equal performance.

At its absolute best the original Voyage nets me about 7 hours of wear. Usually it’ll be between 5-7 hours. Sport, goes 3-4 hours on my skin and doesn’t project.

Again, that disparity in performance. This is why the original Voyage is such a good value play.

Versatility

Nautica Voyage is a daytime casual or school wear cologne for spring/summer. It’s a light daily wear, that you don’t have to put much thought into, as it is safe a non-offensive.

Voyage Sport aims to hit the same notes as its predecessor. No real advantage as to when either should be worn.

Overall Scent

To me, this isn’t even really much of a contest at all. Voyage is much better than Sport is, on every level. I actually kind of like how Voyage Sport smells when it dries down, but its performance was just lacking.

It could have been a nice aquatic variant of the original, but just couldn’t get its act together.

Voyage still has its unique blend versus most anything else out in the market. Particularly, at this price point.

I like Voyage’s freshness, slightly aquatic vibe, and use of floral notes. Even if, that opening act isn’t great. For what it costs, Nautica Voyage has always been a steal. It’s one of the top cheap scents for guys . Most of its flanker follow-ups, really fail to deliver on the standard it set.

If Voyage Sport, had better performance, it would honestly be a solid cheapie. I really liked what they were going for, but it’s just poor execution. There were some interesting things going on there.

Even if that were the case, I still think that Voyage smells better, and since it does have good performance it is the clear winner.
