Maynard Keenan of Tool

Tool are hitting the road this fall. The prog rockers announced the dates for a North American tour on Tuesday morning (June 6), including their first Canadian shows since 2019. The fall outing will compliment the band’s previously announced summer festival gigs with six weeks of new non-fest shows slated to kick off on Oct. 3 in Loveland, CO at the Budweiser Event Center.

Tool’s Maynard James Keenan Says Drag Outfit Had Nothing to Do With Florida Law: ‘I’m Not a…

Trending on billboard.

Singer Maynard James Keenan made news last month when he wore what appeared to be drag during a set at Daytona Beach’s Welcome to Rockville Festival, that seemed at first to be a reaction to the series of  controversial bills  signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis recently that ban minors from attending  drag  shows. But the vocalist who often wears women’s clothes and bizarre costumes on stage later said the choice was personal, not political.

“I’ve been cross-dressing since long before these clickbait-junkie dupes were out of diapers,” he told The Messenger . “And that’s really all there is to it. I’m not a political fella — had nothing to do with Florida.”

Reviews of TOOL’s recent live outings praised the four-piece, with Loudwire dubbing the performances as “a masterclass of immersion, sound and stage design, musicianship… and levels of ungodly tightness.” The Austin Chronicle described the incomparable live experience as an “unbridled exchange of catharsis between performers and fans” and Revolver said “TOOL delivered a stunning… set featuring classic fan favorites, newer Fear Inoculum standouts and choice deeper cuts … the striking visuals also included a psychedelic laser and projections show bar none.”

Tool Have ‘Many Ideas’ For New Album, Reveal When They’ll Hit the Studio

Fans endured a 13-year gap between Tool albums by the time  Fear Inoculum was released in 2019. With "many ideas cooking" and a firm timeline on when they'll return to the studio, perhaps the band won't make everyone wait quite as long for another new record.

In March of 2022, drummer Danny Carey loosely talked about what's next for Tool musically and how another decade-long wait (or longer) seems unlikely.

"I'm sure it won't take us this long for the next one. We even had some stuff left over from the last one that we'll develop. We have head starts on three or four new songs," he told  Cleveland Scene last year.

Providing an update as a guest on The Vinyl Guide podcast, Tool bassist Justin Chancellor lays out what the band has in store for the next few months.

"We've got many ideas cooking. We haven't recorded anything yet. But we're quite busy until — I guess until after the spring of next year touring. So once that's done, we're gonna get back in the studio and knuckle down and put some of it together," Chancellor reveals (transcription via Blabbermouth ).

"We've already had a few pretty decent sessions of writing," he adds, "So we've got the ingredients in place. We've just gotta really bang it out and spend that time when we're not touring."

That studio time will likely takes place in early spring as Tool just announced a 2024 U.S. tour that stretches from Jan. 10 through Feb. 18, with support coming from Elder . See those dates here .

Pressed about whether or not Tool have leftover material from the  Fear Inoculum sessions, Chancellor says, "Yeah, tons from the last album. We have tons of ideas, but not recorded to the standard we'd put on an album. Just kind of, I'd say, lots of demoed stuff. And then just tons of ideas just kind of stored away."

Tool Announce Massive 2022 U.S. Tour

tool_credit_travisshinn.jpg, Travis Shinn

UPDATE, 12/6/21: Tool have added a new U.S. show to their 2022 tour, on January 28th at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs. Tickets will go on-sale this Friday, December 10th at 10 a.m. mountain. A selection of exclusive packages, which include a pre-sale ticket, will also be made available to Tool Army members on December 8th at 10 a.m. mountain via this link .

ORIGINAL STORY: On March 12th, 2020, Tool were scheduled to play the Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Oregon, in support of their long-awaited album, Fear Inoculum , when the show was abruptly canceled as nationwide lockdowns began to take effect in response to the rapid spread of COVID-19. Little did anyone realize at the time how long the pandemic would last, but today (September 27th), over a year and a half later, the prog-metal titans have finally announced a resumption of the Fear Inoculum tour — and they're picking up literally right where they left off, at the Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Oregon.

"It is with great pleasure I get to announce our return to the road," drummer Danny Carey commented. "These past 18 months have been trying to say the least but from great trials come great lessons and great rewards. We are genuinely looking forward to sharing them with you." Singer Maynard James Keenan added, "Let's finish what we started. Shall we?"

The band are set to spend three months touring the U.S. before heading to Europe for another month (see the full itinerary below), with Blonde Redhead opening shows from January 10th to February 10th, and the Acid Helps doing the honors from February 19th to March 20th. Tickets for all dates are on-sale this Friday, October 1st at 10 a.m. local time (U.K. and Irish dates are on-sale at 9 a.m. local time). Tool Army members can purchase pre-sale tickets for European dates on September 28th at 10 a.m. local time (24-hour pre-sale window), while U.S. pre-sale tickets are available on September 29th at 10 a.m. local time (36-hour pre-sale window). A selection of exclusive packages, which include a pre-sale ticket, will also be made available to Tool Army members on September 29th at 10 a.m. local time.

Tool Announce 2022 Tour

By Matthew Strauss

Tool

Tool have announced 2022 tour dates. The shows are set to begin in the United States in early January, with the North American run stretching into March. Tool will then play European and UK shows in April and May. Find the dates, including stops with Blonde Redhead and the Acid Helps, below.

Like many bands, Tool had plan to go on tour last year, announcing concerts in February. By June, however, the band formally canceled the tour.

“It is with great pleasure I get to announce our return to the road,” Tool drummer Danny Carey said in a statement. “These past 18 months have been trying to say the least but from great trials come great lessons and great rewards. We are genuinely looking forward to sharing them with you.”

Tool’s latest album is 2019’s Fear Inoculum .

  • Justin Chancellor
  • April 12, 2024 April 12, 2024

A new interview with Paul D’Amour sounds like a pretty interesting read. He talks about the handover of bass duties with Justin Chancellor, going over some of the time they spent together on the Tool sound Paul helped develop. “Basically, when I left the band, Justin [Chancellor] was my friend; I invited him to my house, sat on my couch with him, and showed him how to play the songs. …  Read More » Paul discusses Tool handover with Justin

Plenty of great Tool content out there at the moment, and one of the best is Rick Beato‘s interview of Danny Carey in the Tool Loft. It’s a great conversation about a range of topics including Tool, drumming & drummers and music in general. Tool to Hit Studio for New Album When Touring Wraps Up: “We’ve Got Many Ideas Cooking”

"We've got all the ingredients in place"

Tool to Hit Studio for New Album When Touring Wraps Up: “We’ve Got Many Ideas Cooking”

After the 13-year wait for 2019’s Fear Inoculum , it appears it won’t be that long before another Tool album arrives. The band currently has a busy tour itinerary ahead of them, but according to bassist Justin Chancellor, the plan is to work on new music once they’re off the road.

Chancellor’s latest remarks offer a firmer timetable for a new Tool record. Last year, drummer Danny Carey told Cleveland Scene that “it won’t take us this long for the next one” — in reference to the decade-plus gestation period for Fear Inoculum — and said that there was “stuff left over from the last one that we’ll develop” and that the band has “head starts on three or four new songs.”

Speaking on the Monday (October 9th) episode of The Vinyl Guide podcast, Chancellor said Tool have already “got many ideas cooking” for the new album.

“We haven’t recorded anything yet,” the bassist said. “But we’re quite busy until after the spring of next year touring. So once that’s done we’re gonna get back in the studio and knuckle down and put some of it together.” The bassist further noted that Tool has already enjoyed “a few pretty decent sessions of writing. So we’ve got all the ingredients in place. We’ve just got to really bang it out and spend that time when we’re not touring.”

When asked whether Tool is sitting on unreleased material, Chancellor responded, “Tons from the last album. We have tons of ideas. But not recorded to the standard that we’d put on an album. Just kind of, lots of demoed stuff. And just tons of ideas that are just stored away.”

Any studio time will have to wait until Tool wrap up their current touring cycle. The band is currently in the midst of a fall North American trek and just announced a 2024 US arena tour , with tickets available here .

Tool’s new album: Release date, tour dates and everything we know so far

Over 4600 days after their last album '10,000 Days', a follow-up looks imminent...

new tool tour

As the common expression goes, Tool have been ‘taking their sweet time’ with releasing the follow-up to ‘10,000 Days’.

Fourteen years – and several false alarms – later, it looks like the Los Angeles rock band have finally finished work on their fifth LP, and various members have been dropping hints pointing to a new album in 2019.

For patient metal-heads, it can’t drop soon enough. Here’s everything we know about Tool’s impending release.

Latest updates:

  • The tracklist for the album is shared
  • Band have revealed the artwork for new record
  • Tool’s new album now has a title
  • The band have also finally confirmed the record’s release date.
  • The band change logo on Facebook, confirming something new is on the way
  • Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett confirms album artwork is done

When is the new Tool album’s release date?

The first hint at a release date came when fans were given the date August 30 at a show in Birmingham, Alabama on May 7.

According to those in attendance, a video screen flashed the date “August 30th” during a brief intermission.

Frontman Maynard James Keenan reportedly encouraged fans to share the news via social media and said: “Alright everyone take out your phones, security stand down and let these fuckers do whatever it is with their phones.”

The release date of August 30 was confirmed at the end of July in an Instagram post that also saw the band release the album title.

Update- Midway through mixing. Most likely be a few recalls. Then some arguing. Then Mastering, Artwork, Video, Special Packaging, etc. Best Ballpark Guess- Release date somewhere between Mid May and Mid July. More focused updates to follow as we progress. @tool #simplemath pic.twitter.com/o6T4AloLtB — Maynard J Keenan (@mjkeenan) February 8, 2019

Quizzed by a fan at the recent NAMM 2019 music convention, Tool’s drummer had revealed a rough release date for the band’s fifth LP. However, Keenan later denied his bandmate’s comments, stating that an April release was out of the question after all. Oh.

No. — Maynard J Keenan (@mjkeenan) February 5, 2019

“It should be out mid-April,” said his bandmate Danny Carey originally. “That’s the plan anyway.” In the footage, filmed by a fan, Carey confirms an April release – presumably April 2019 – at around the one minute mark.

Metallica’s Kirk Hammett has also now confirmed that the album’s artwork is finished and he claims the LP is “close” to completion. “Well, I talk to [TOOL guitarist] Adam Jones quite a bit, and the last thing I knew, he was dealing with artwork. So that is a good sign. If they’re dealing with artwork, it must be close,” he told New Zealand’s  The Rock

It seems that, even if there are any more delays with the record, it should be out by the end of the year. The band recently changed their logo on Facebook to one that includes the roman numerals for 2019.

What’s the name of Tool’s new album?

The band revealed at the end of July that their new album would be called ‘Fear Inoculum’, and will be out, as predicted, on August 30.

View this post on Instagram FEAR INOCULUM, Aug 30th, 2019 Album Art, Lead Track, and Pre-Order info TBA. Thank you for your patience. A post shared by Tool (@toolmusic) on Jul 29, 2019 at 1:26pm PDT

Revealing the title while appearing on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Maynard said that finally sharing the news was “A lot of weight lifted off my chest. The four of us are a lot of f**king work. Everything is a f**king committee meeting, and it always gets shut down.

“When you get successful, you think you’re right about everything. It’s not  that  bad with us, but there’s [that] dynamic.”

Is there a tracklist for the album?

There is now. On August 14, the band shared the record’s tracklistings for both the physical and digital releases. Both feature new single ‘Fear Inoculum’ and two tracks that have appeared in the group’s recent live sets – ‘Descending’ and ‘Invincible’.

The physical album’s tracklist is as follows:

‘Fear Inoculum’ ‘Pneuma’ ‘Invincible’ ‘Descending’ ‘Culling Voices’ ‘Chocolate Chip Trip’ ‘7empest’

The digital release, meanwhile, will feature the following songs:

‘Fear Inoculum’ ‘Pneuma’ ‘Litanie contra la Peur’ ‘Invincible’ ‘Legion Inoculant’ ‘Descending’ ‘Culling Voices’ ‘Chocolate Chip Trip’ ‘7empest’ ‘Mockingbeat’

View this post on Instagram ~ Fear Inoculum track list: 1. Fear Inoculum 2. Pneuma 3. Invincible 4. Descending 5. Culling Voices 6. Chocolate Chip Trip 7. 7empest Bonus tracks (available via the digital release; physical copy includes a digital download card): • Litanie contre la Peur • Legion Inoculant • Mockingbeat A post shared by Tool (@toolmusic) on Aug 13, 2019 at 10:51pm PDT

Is Tool’s album finished?

At the beginning of this year, Tool’s Keenan confirmed that all vocal recording for the new album is finished. “Final vocals tracked MONTHS ago” he wrote in an update on Twitter, adding that there’s still a long mixing process to come.

Update- Final vocals tracked MONTHS ago. Then U.S.-UK-Euro run w #APC . If Tool all inst are tracked, long process of Mixing now. Meanwhile write/film/track w @puscifer for #puscifer2020 & troll the band FBs with wine posts. #funnyshit #whileyouwerewhiningiwasworking — Maynard J Keenan (@mjkeenan) January 4, 2019

In the meantime, he said, he’ll be shifting focus across onto his other project Puscifer.

Back i n February 2018, Keenan tweeted that he had begun receiving ”music files from the boys with the word FINAL in the title a few months ago after 11 years of begging. That in theory means the tracks won’t change out from under me while I’m trying to write stories and melodies to them,” he said. “In theory.”

In March 2019, it was reported that Tool may have flown to Portland, Maine to begin mastering the record with Bob Ludwig.

The Maine-based engineer has previously worked with Nirvana , Jimi Hendrix , The Strokes , Queen , U2 , and many more acts in putting the finishing touches to records.

Alternative Nation reports that the band was spotted by Of The Trees, a group from Portland, Maine, in the airport, fuelling rumours that Tool are indeed getting the record mastered by Ludwig.

Appearing on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Maynard revealed that the album was indeed finished, simply stating: “I’m just so excited we finished this record.”

Does Tool’s new album have a title?

Tool’s long-awaited fifth album – their first full-length since 2006’s 10,000 Days – is as-of-yet untitled, with no current clues out there pointing to a possible title.

Are Tool teasing the album?

Shortly after the clip of Carey confirming an April release surfaced – which Keenan later denied – Tool updated their website with new visuals.

The mind-bending animation features a slowly-morphing skeleton, and hundreds of hands clutching a glowing green orb.

View this post on Instagram FEAR INOCULUM. Title Track and Album Pre-Order Wednesday August 7th. Links will be posted tomorrow, Tuesday, August 6th on our Band URL and Social Accts. #tool2019 A post shared by Tool (@toolmusic) on Aug 5, 2019 at 9:05am PDT

The band have since teased the artwork for the new record on Instagram.

Are Tool going on tour?

Yep. The band have confirmed plans for a European tour , starting in kicking off in June in Germany and finishing in Portugal in July.

Pretty good timing for a tour in support of a new album released this year, don’t cha think? Odds are, Tool will be performing much of the record.

They’re set to play the following European shows:

June 2nd 2019: Berlin, Germany – Mercedes-Benz Arena June 4 2019: Prague, Czech Republic – O2 Arena June 5 2019: Vienna, Austria – Wiener Stadhalle June 7 2019: Nurburg, Germany – Rock Am Ring Festival June 9 2019: Nuremberg, Germany – Rock Im Park Festival June 11 2019: Krakow, Poland – Impact Festival at Tauron Arena June 13 2019: Florence, Italy – Firenze Rocks Festival June 16 2019: Donington, UK – Download Festival June 18 2019: Amsterdam, Netherlands – Ziggo Dome June 20 2019: Copenhagen, Denmark – Copenhell Festival June 25 2019: Zurich, Switzerland – Hallenstadion June 30 2019: Madrid, Spain – Download Festival Spain July 2 2019: Lisbon, Portugal – Altice Arena

The band will be appearing at Germany’s twin Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park festivals, as well as Download Festival in both the UK and Spain. G rab tickets from their website .

What will Tool’s new album sound like?

In December 2017, Tom Morello claimed that he was the first person outside of the band to hear new music from Tool. Posting a photo of himself with part of the band on his Instagram page , he said that he:

“Had the honour of being the first outsider to hear new #TOOL music today!! Still just instrumentals but sounded epic, majestic, symphonic, brutal, beautiful, tribal, mysterious, deep, sexy and VERY Tool.”

In a promotional video for their May 2018 tour, meanwhile, the band debuted a new track called ‘Descending’. It’s believed to be an instrumental studio demo of the track, rather than a finished recording, but still – it may well serve as a taster of the new material.

Guitarist Adam Jones recently told Guitar World , the album contains seven tracks and two transitions spanning 85 minutes in length. While writing the album, Jones said he and the band were heavily inspired by the number seven.

“I took a picture pointing to the number seven while we were recording, and a lot of the riffs [bassist] Justin [Chancellor] and I brought in were in seven,” Jones said. “You don’t really go, ‘I’m going to write a riff in seven!’…Without being too descriptive about the concept, the main thing is that the seven beat just kept coming up, and riffs in seven kept coming up. It was really weird!”

“Then [singer] Maynard [James Keenan] told me about a whole concept he had about the number seven. We were all, like, ‘Oh my God! This is too weird!’ Then Alex Grey [Tool album artist] basically said the same thing and he has a concept that will reveal itself through video.”

Why has Tool’s follow-up to ‘10,000 Days’ been delayed?

As far back as 2013, Tool began to hint towards an imminent album release. Danny Carey and Maynard James Keenan originally made conflicting statements about a new record in 2013, with Carey later admitting that 2014 seemed more realistic.

In an interview with Rolling Stone the following year, Keenan and the band’s Adam Jones revealed that a lawsuit was responsible for the delays, along with increasing family commitments.

Rolling Stone reported that a friend of Jones’ claimed that he had created artwork for the band, and wanted credit. The band allegedly thought that an insurance company would defend them against the claims, but the publication reports that the insurance company instead sued the band over technicalities in the case. The band then counter-sued, and the case later went on trial in January 2015.

Tool later won the suit , and work on their fifth LP then resumed after seven years of litigation.

Leenan also claimed that his bandmates’ indecisiveness was delaying the album’s completion . “I like to release records and write things a little more quickly than those guys like to write. Their process is very analytical,” he said.

Copies of the live album, taped in 2014, are available to preorder now on the Puscifer website , but anybody keen to make a purchase should be forewarned that it features one of the most alarming/unsettling album covers in recent memory.

Cinquanta: A 50th Birthday Celebration For Maynard James Keenan Live , as the new album’s called, depicts the vocalist, now 59, as a baby in a cot. The soles of his feet are directly in the foreground, he’s wearing a discoloured nappy (diaper, for our American friends) and he’s crying while wearing a bib. It’s the stuff of nightmares, tbh.

The album itself will feature collaborative live sets that took place on May 10/11, 2014 at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.

Members of Puscifer, A Perfect Circle and American space rock band Failure performed onstage together during the shows, playing songs from each band’s back-catalogue.

Keenan made guest appearances during Failure’s sets across the day, performing the songs The Nurse Who Loved Me , Solaris and Blank .

Looking ahead, the vocalist also plans to celebrate his 60th birthday on the road. He will host a ‘Sessanta’ that features members of Puscifer, A Perfect Circle and US prog/funk metal band Primus with a series of American shows from April 2 to May 4.

Primus singer/bassist Les Claypool comments: “What a glorious notion of combining three bands that all start with the letter ‘P’ for a tribute to Maynard Keenan’s 60th trip around the sun.

“I’ve known Maynard for more than three decades and I have to say, I’ve yet to meet a more creative, ambitious and industrious human being; that is assuming he is actually human.”

Following the Sessanta tour, Keenan will cross the pond and play a European run with Tool . Details of those shows are also below, and tickets are on sale .

Event Information (passed)

New venue update : Due to extreme weather forecasted, the show will now take place in  Fifth Third Arena.

University of Cincinnati alumni and NFL stars Jason and Travis Kelce are returning to campus for one night only.

The Bearcat brothers are bringing their popular "New Heights" podcast to Fifth Third Arena on Thursday, April 11, for a live recording with special guests, student games and some surprises.

The evening kicks off at 7 p.m. with the Great “Lombaby” Games, in which UC students will face off in a number of fun challenges.

The show, “New Heights Live: We Gotta Talk About It,” begins at 9 p.m. and will be recorded and released on the podcast next week. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was recently announced as a special guest , with more surprises still under wraps. It’s promised to be an unforgettable night in the heart of UC’s campus.

Tickets are now sold out.

Everything you need to know about ‘New Heights Live’

Who are jason and travis kelce, and why are they coming to uc.

Brothers, Bearcats, Super Bowl champions and future Hall of Famers Jason and Travis Kelce may hail from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, but they always rep Cincy.

Older brother Jason attended UC from 2006-2010 before being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011. Just last month, Jason announced his retirement from the NFL after 13 years as the center and team leader for the team.

Travis attended UC from 2008-2012, playing alongside Jason during their overlapping years. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013, and he’s played there for his entire career. The superstar tight end is on the heels of his third Super Bowl win. Oh, and he’s Taylor Swift’s boyfriend.

What better place to host a live show than their alma mater?

What is ‘New Heights?’

“New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce” is a top-ranked sports podcast launched by the brothers in September 2022. In the weekly show they dissect NFL games and news, including their own performances each week, talk shop with special guests and, as the Kelces have become increasingly popular outside of football — cough, cough, Taylor Swift — share a peek into their personal lives.

What to expect from the live show

Organizers liken it to a concert. Doors open at 5 p.m. The “first act” begins at 7 p.m. with the first-ever Great “Lombaby” Games, a series of Olympic-style challenges in which 10 Bearcat athletes will take on 10 fellow students, with the Kelces serving as commentators/referees. (The name is a nod to the Vince Lombardi Trophy, which is awarded to the winning Super Bowl team. If you know, you know.)

After a brief intermission, the live podcast show is set to begin around 9 p.m. Besides the announcement of special guest Joe Burrow , details on the night have been sparse. The guys have teased everything from Skyline Chili to Adriatico’s Pizza, cannons to live animals, while promising more tangible elements like trivia and Q&As. The mystery is part of the fun.

Where to park

Event parking is available at Campus Green and Woodside garages starting at 3 p.m. and can be purchased online in advance for $13 or $15 day-of.

Will Taylor Swift be there?

While there is a promise of surprise guests (and Swift is on a break from her international tour until May), don’t count on it.

Search Made in Alabama

Montgomery whitewater takes center stage as new development strategies take shape.

MONTGOMERY, Alabama — Commerce Secretary Ellen McNair joined a team from Innovate Alabama today for a tour of Montgomery Whitewater, a world-class recreational facility that’s now hosting Olympic athletes, as Alabama business development leaders consider new approaches to spark economic growth.

McNair, who is spearheading the creation of a new state economic development strategic plan, said outdoor recreation assets like the Montgomery Whitewater facility can play an important role in the next-generation economic development strategies being developed by the state.

“It’s becoming clear that having outdoor recreation attractions like Montgomery Whitewater can catalyze economic development efforts at the local level,” Secretary McNair said.

“Building out Alabama’s outdoor recreation infrastructure will make the state a more attractive location for high-skill workers and help us more fully develop an ecosystem for entrepreneurship and technological innovation.”

new tool tour

Montgomery Whitewater opened in July 2023 at the Maxwell Capital Gateway to Montgomery, along the Interstate 65 corridor. The center is anchored by an Olympic-standard recirculating whitewater course, which allows users of all ages and skill sets to participate at difficulty levels ranging from beginner to expert.

Montgomery Whitewater is hosting the U.S Olympic trials for hopefuls in Canoe Slalom and Kayak Cross on this Saturday and Sunday, and the athletes were training during today’s tour.

TALENT ATTRACTION

Secretary McNair and the Innovate Alabama team were invited to visit the venue to view the athletes training, meet with the center’s leadership and see firsthand how outdoor recreation can be a powerful business recruiting tool.

“Outdoor recreation is an integral part of Innovate Alabama’s mission,” Innovate Alabama CEO Cynthia Crutchfield said. “Facilities like Montgomery Whitewater will be catalysts for attracting innovative talent and entrepreneurs to Alabama and give us an opportunity to show off Alabama’s treasured outdoor recreation assets.”

A Hoover Institution report , prepared for Innovate Alabama, asserted that a substantial, coordinated, and long-term program of investment in outdoor recreation infrastructure would yield substantial returns to the state.

The report added that Alabama has a vast endowment of natural assets that can be leveraged to expand its outdoor recreation industry, enhancing the state’s attractiveness for high-skill individuals and new tourists.

Crutchfield and Innovate Alabama are part of the team working with Secretary McNair on the new economic development strategic plan, at the request of Governor Kay Ivey. Representatives from the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama and Retirement Systems of Alabama are also included.

The completed plan is due to Governor Ivey on Oct. 1.

“One of my first meetings in this position was with Cynthia and, immediately, we had all kinds of bridges we wanted to build between Commerce and Innovate Alabama. I want to first and foremost tell the Innovate Alabama team that you will have a great partner in Commerce,” McNair told the tour group.

“We firmly believe in your mission and, with one of your pillars being outdoor recreation, as a catalyst for innovation, we obviously couldn’t agree with you more,” she added.

The Montgomery Whitewater park project resulted from an unprecedented partnership between the Montgomery County Commission, the City of Montgomery and the State of Alabama.

“This is the story of an amazing partnership, a public-private partnership, and it’s about an integrated approach to economic development” that includes recreation as a component, said Anne Buckalew, president and CEO of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce.

Stacey Hepp, the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Race Director who was involved in the development of Montgomery Whitewater, told the tour group that a similar facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, has been at the center of that city’s economic growth arc.

She said she expects a similar story to play out in Montgomery.

“There’s so much innovation, and there is so much synergy, so I think having this location here and having so much all in one spot, I think you guys should just buckle your seatbelt because I think you’re about to get really, really busy,” Hepp said.
