Finally, Coptic Christians once had a church here, and the remains of some pillars can still be seen in the Temple of Montu.

Valley of the Kings

You’ve probably been reading about the tomb of boy pharaoh Tutankhamen and its stash of hidden treasures in the Valley of the Kings since your primary school days. Here’s your chance to see the actual chamber for yourself. You can also visit the recently opened replica nearby, which was launched to mitigate some of the damage that mass tourism is doing to the original, and has been getting rave reviews for its detail and authentic feel. Move on to the grand chambers where Ramses IX, Ramses II, Merenptah and many more were buried, to admire the hieroglyphics and intriguing scenes carved into the walls.

Look out for: vivid paintings

Many of the Ancient Egyptian temples in the region have just the smallest flecks of paintwork left, so it’s almost a shock to see how bright the paintings are inside the tombs, where they have been hidden from the sun for so many years. Bright paint was made from chalk, charcoal, ochre and malachite, mixed with eggwhite and gum and then brushed with beeswax to varnish and protect it. And protect it did: the birds, snakes, boats and many other symbols here are still in such popping shades of red, yellow, blue and white that they look as if they were daubed just yesterday.

Temple of Edfu

This huge temple in Edfu is dedicated to Horus, the Falcon God, and you’ll see the image of a man with a falcon’s head representing him throughout the temple. Falcons were worshipped because they don’t eat dead flesh, so they were considered noble. It’s one of the best preserved temples in Egypt, with antechambers and halls to explore, as well as the inner sanctuary, which still contains the polished-granite shrine that once housed the gold cult statue of Horus.

Look out for: the courtyard

Don’t be tempted to rush through the courtyard to get to the temple, as there’s so much to see here, particularly the wall carvings. Notice the sails of the boats, which are pictured rolled up if they face in the direction of the Nile's flow, and open in the other direction. Once, this space was the only part of the site members of the public were allowed visit. During the the day it was so bright outside that they couldn't see what was happening inside the temple, which only the privileged few had access to.

A Nile cruise just wouldn’t be complete without paying homage to the crocodiles. Do as the Ancient Egyptians did and pay your respects at Kom Ombo , a double temple that's devoted half to Horus and half to crocodile god Sobek. This stretch of the river used to be infested with vicious crocs, preventing locals from using the water to wash or cook – this temple was a way of placating them.

Look out for: doubling up

There’s two of everything from courts and halls to sanctuaries rooms in this temple to show one god wasn’t favoured more than the other.

Travel safety

T here are no FCO warnings against travelling through the stretch of the Nile from Luxor to Aswan, nor any of the stops mentioned in this article. However, it is always advisable to check the latest advice before travelling.

A Nile cruise is on nearly every international traveler’s wish list. The wonders of ancient Egypt go way beyond the pyramids and the sphinx, with countless treasures lying further south, a stretch away from Cairo, lying either within reach of Luxor or Aswan, which is why most people opt for a cruise between the two cities, stopping off at the most important sites along the way.

Having visited Cairo before, a Nile cruise had been on my wish list for years until I finally found the right ship, which I knew I would enjoy, together with the right duration of cruise and itinerary to suit me. It took a lot of research and some luck to chance upon the cruise that was right for me: very small, few people, historic connections, a touch of the glamor of 1920s- and 1930s-style travel, and plenty of class. I found my ideal cruise on the SS Sudan , the last true paddle steamer on the Nile, the one Agatha Christie sailed on and where she wrote Death on the Nile — and where the subsequent movies were filmed. Small enough to allow for privacy, large enough for comfort, with a five-night, six-day itinerary between Luxor and Aswan.

But what is perfect for me isn’t necessarily perfect for everybody else. Some might want a pool, a shop, more people to socialize with, or maybe more modern cabins, and probably going from Aswan to Luxor, or even cruising the whole way from Cairo to Aswan. Timing is crucial as well, as is deciding what to do at either end. There are many things to consider before embarking on a Nile cruise, so, here I have listed a few points to mull over and research before you book yourself that trip of a lifetime.

Up Or Down River?

Let’s start with some nomenclature you will need to go along the right route: Cruising up the Nile means you are going south, toward the source of the Nile, which, by the way, I recently discovered in Uganda. Cruising down the Nile is sailing toward the estuary in the Mediterranean. But, just to confuse things, Upper Egypt is in fact southern Egypt, while Lower Egypt is in the north, by the coast.

Most Nile Cruises, except for the ones setting off from Cairo and cruising all the way up the Nile, actually sail only in Upper Egypt, between Luxor and Aswan.

I am unsure about what the statistics are when it comes to preferences, but all the cruise ships in Upper Egypt either cruise from Luxor to Aswan or from Aswan to Luxor. Both Luxor and Aswan have airports you can fly into from Cairo, the main international airport in Egypt, so the choice really is yours. That said, personally, I felt that going from Luxor to Aswan was my preferred option simply because — in my mind — Aswan is so much prettier than Luxor. And from Aswan, you can travel to the temples in Abu Simbel, leaving you with the best bit at the end of your journey. But many people would argue the opposite and there really is no right or wrong.

Hotels At Either End

While many travelers, mostly those who are time poor, head straight from the airport to the cruise ship and, once docked after the cruise, fly straight back out again, I would like to plead for a night or two at either end. Not only does it give you the option of overcoming any jet lag or travel fatigue, but also there are some lovely historic hotels that are worth spending a night in. In Luxor, the famous Winter Palace is a historic hotel, a little frayed around the edges, but with a fabulous garden and a pedigree of former guests that is hard to beat. The only place that can beat the guest list of the Winter Palace is the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan where Agatha Christie stayed at the end of her cruise, and you can take a tour through numerous suites named after illustrious guests who stayed there over the last century. And the hotel offers rooms with some of my favorite views in the world .

What Kind Of Boat

There are essentially four types of boats on the Nile that can take you from A to B. There are modern cruise ships, relatively small when compared to ocean-going cruise ships with around 50 cabins, but many with swimming pools, cabins with balconies, and shops and restaurants on board. There is the SS Sudan , alone in its class, without amenities such as pools or shops, but with only five suites and 18 cabins, plus a superb sundeck, a bar, and a restaurant. Then there are the dahabiyas, beautiful boats with a sail at either end — and even more private with many only catering to around 12 passengers. The dahabiyas come without engines, but often have a tugboat for added speed, and offer the most tranquil and secluded cruises. Lastly, there are the feluccas, small sailboats, where in some cases you can spend one night on board, but generally, these lovely and traditional sailboats are only used for day trips.

Where Are The Stops?

Between the most popular cruise harbors of Luxor and Aswan lie the most amazing sights, most of which are taken in by all the various cruises, because, after all, that is why everybody is there. The main stops are Qena, a little downriver from Luxor, with the Dendera and Abydos temples; Luxor , with the various valleys of tombs; Edfu with the fabulous Kom Ombo temple; and lastly Aswan, with a visit to Philae. On a five-night cruise upriver (so going south), you will stay overnight in Qena, Luxor, Edfu, and two nights in Aswan.

Length Of Cruise

Most cruises between Luxor and Aswan take between three and seven days, the shorter ones skipping Qena and only staying one night in Aswan, the longer ones adding extra nights, usually in Luxor.

If you are lucky enough to have the time to sail from Cairo to Aswan , the itinerary takes a minimum of 11 nights, but more often than not 14 nights, with sightseeing in Cairo included, usually reaching Luxor on Day 11. Despite the current of the Nile, which is evident but quite slow, the cruises up or down the river take the same amount of time.

When Best To Travel

The best time to visit Upper (southern) Egypt is between October and April. That said, I went at the end of October, and the temperatures were still in the 90s Fahrenheit, making sightseeing a bit of an exhausting undertaking. In the summer, these temperatures are much, much worse, so travel then is best avoided. In December and January, the coldest months, the temperatures hover around the mid-70s Fahrenheit. As for rain, the rainy season is between October and April, with a negligible spike at less than an inch of rain in October.

What You Must Pack

Even if yours is a fancy cruise, pack light, pack layers, and pack sensible shoes. It will be hot and sandy whenever you go exploring. In the Valley of the Kings, for example, there is much sand, no shade, and plenty of stairs and steps to conquer, so light clothing but good shoes that keep you firmly on the ground are useful. Bring a light cover for the evening and something nice for the boat. A clothes brush to get the sand and dust off you at the end of the outing and a handheld fan to bring you some air when it gets warm are essential. And, if you like a tipple or two, know that in Egypt imported wine and champagne are extortionately expensive, so, get your full allowance in the duty-free shop and enjoy along the way.

What To Do Before (Or After)

Chances are that you will fly into Cairo, and unless you are embarking in Cairo, some sightseeing is a must. Allow at least two extra days to see the main sights before heading south. And once you are in the south, note that all cruise ships stop at Aswan because of the dams. If you want to see Abu Simbel, you can either fly from Aswan to Abu Simbel or take a tour either by bus or private car , but you will need to book the car in advance. This is because the tourist road caravan sets off first thing in the morning and is escorted by police all the way between Aswan and Abu Simbel because of potential bandits, and all travelers need to be registered and accounted for by the day before at the latest.

What To Read And Watch About The Nile

Pro Tip: In many places, you will either have to pay for a photography permit, or, at times, won’t be able to take photographs. But don’t let that stop you from carrying your camera everywhere with you!

Nile River Cruise Guide: All Info for Your Egypt Boat Trip

In this special guide, we give you all necessary information and explain everything you need to know to about a Nile River cruise between Luxor and Aswan in Egypt.

Taking a Nile river cruise

Taking a cruise on the River Nile has always been one of the top holiday activities in Egypt.

Already in the early 1900s, European socialites and adventurers flocked to Egypt and embarked on a steamer or sailing boat down the Nile.

From Agatha Christie’s book ‘Death on the Nile’ to Madness’ madcap song ‘Night Boat to Cairo’, a river cruise down the Nile has always featured heavily in literature, films and popular culture.

Indeed, for many people, cruising down the Nile and taking in the sights from the comfort of your river boat is the quintessential Egyptian experience.

There is just something mystical about sailing down the Nile while seeing all the life on the river banks and making stops at all kinds of fascinating temples.

Even though I was a bit hesitant going on a cruise being a young independent traveller who generally dislikes organised group travel, I had such a great time board that I can highly recommend a Nile river cruise to anyone.

All you need to know about Nile river cruises

Booking a Nile river cruise is not as simple as it might sound as there are quite some things you need to take into account and choices to make.

These are some of the questions people have when deciding upon a Nile cruise:

– What Nile river cruise itinerary should you choose? – What is best: Sailing upstream or downstream? – Which ship should I sail on? – How much does a Nile cruise cost? – Where can I book a Nile river cruise?

In this guide you can hopefully find the answer to all of these questions and find a lot more useful information which will help you booking your perfect Nile river cruise and preparing you for your big Egypt trip.

What is the best Nile cruise itinerary?

Most travellers who embark on a Nile river cruise in Egypt do so between the cities of Luxor and Aswan.

Although you find the majority of cruise options and departures between these two cities, this isn’t the only option.

There are also so-called long Nile cruises between Cairo and Aswan and you will find cruise boat itineraries on Lake Nasser as well.

Given that cruises between Aswan and Luxor are by far the most popular and this was my itinerary as well, it will be the main focus of this guide.

A typical Aswan to Luxor cruise itinerary

If you book a Nile river cruise between Aswan and Luxor, the itinerary will typically take four days and three nights (five days and four nights in the opposite direction when sailing upstream from Luxor to Aswan).

However, do note that some cruises might take shorter or longer depending on the exact programme.

What will be included in your itinerary when it comes to food & beverages, shore excursions and guided tours also depends on the exact cruise package you book.

After all, you can find anything from all-inclusive luxury cruises with private tours to more basic, cheaper options.

Below, you can see the exact schedule of my Nile river cruise itinerary between Aswan and Luxor.

My cruise itinerary

1st day: Pick-up from Aswan train station, airport, or hotel. Guided visit to the Unfinished Obelisk , Philae and the Aswan High Dam . Embarkation and lunch on board the Nile river boat, followed by free time in Aswan (in which I visited the Nubian village on Elephantine Island). Dinner and overnight on the boat while it remains anchored in Aswan.

2nd day: Breakfast on board and free morning in Aswan , in which I went on an optional excursion to Abu Simbel . Lunch on the Nile cruiser and start of the sailing downstream towards Kom Ombo. Guided visit of the Kom Ombo Temple , followed by dinner on the boat.

3rd day: During the night the boat sailed from Kom Ombo to Edfu. Breakfast on board, followed by a guided visit to Edfu Temple . Lunch on board the ship as it sails down to Luxor via the Esna Locks . Guided visit to Luxor and its East Bank sights ( Karnak , Luxor Temple ) and farewell dinner on board. Last night on board the ship as it remains anchored in Luxor.

4th day: Breakfast on board, check-out and disembarkation from the ship. Guided visit of the Luxor West Bank sights ( Valley of the Kings , Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut , Colossi of Memnon) which marks the end of the cruise itinerary. Drop-off at the Luxor railway station or airport, or a hotel of your choice.

Should you sail upstream or downstream?

Whether you should sail upstream or downstream is an entirely personal choice and therefore there is no simple answer to this question.

Indeed, a lot of it might depend more on your own schedule than on your preferences.

If you have only limited time on your trip, the advantage of starting in Aswan and sailing downstream is that such cruises typically take one night less.

As I was set on taking the night train from Cairo , it was also more practical for me to begin my cruise in Aswan as the arrival time of this train in Luxor is so early in the morning that continuing to Aswan meant I could sleep longer in my compartment and enjoy the journey more.

However, starting in Luxor and sailing upstream will mean that the journey will be a bit slower and more leisurely, giving you more time on the Nile cruiser to savour the Egyptian landscapes.

Another advantage of sailing upstream is that it’s arguably the more natural route, as also the great explorers and ancient navigators used to travel southward.

The further south you go upstream on the Nile, the more exotic the landscapes become.

You will finish your journey in the Nubian lands and leave the awe-inspiring sight of Abu Simbel just before the Egyptian border with Sudan as your last stop.

However, there is also something to say for leaving Luxor as your last stop, as Karnak and the Valley of Kings easily rank among the most impressive in Egypt.

How are shore excursions arranged?

The way how shore excursions are arranged depends on the exact cruise package you book.

In my case, I had booked a Nile cruise package which included a private guide and private transfers at all stops on the itinerary, with all the entrance fees of the sights included.

The advantage of this is not only the fact that you have a much more tailor-made and personal experience visiting the sights, but it will also help you beat the crowds.

While all the group tours still had to assemble on the quay at each stop, me and my guide had already begun our visit.

The fact that we had our own SUV instead of a bus to reach the destinations further away from the cruise berthing place (for example in Luxor) certainly added to the comfort as well.

If you don’t opt for a private guide and excursions, you can join a tour group, which will certainly be cheaper.

In some cases it’s also possible to book your Nile cruise on the basis of meals and lodging only.

However, that means that you will have to arrange all visits, transportation and optional guided tours at temples yourself and that it’s your own responsibility to be back in time before departure.

Although this is straightforward at Kom Ombo where it’s just a short walk from the berthing place to the temple, it will be more challenging at Edfu and Luxor.

Although I’m normally not a person to take private tours being more of an independent traveller, I have to say that I certainly appreciated all the benefits this time around and found it value for money.

Besides, if you truly want to understand the history, symbolism and meaning behind all ancient Egyptian sights, having a professional guide with you is an absolute must.

Whether you opt for a private guide or join a group tour, you are likely to have the same guide for the entirety of your cruise as he/she will travel on board as well for the entire voyage.

Choosing your vessel

Once you have an itinerary in mind, you will have to decide on which vessel you want to sail on your Nile cruise.

There are dozens of river boats plying the Nile and it’s up to your own preferences in style, budget and comfort which ship you select.

Some river boats feature a hypermodern design, a couple of ships may have more of a retro vibe by adding some local colour, while other vessels might be antiquated and haven’t seen a refurb in decades.

Of course, the price you pay for your cruise largely depends on the quality of the vessel you select, with the newer or more recently refurbished cruise ships commanding a premium over the older boats.

Most travel agencies offer you the choice between dozens of cruise ships, although not all vessels might be available on your preferred date.

Choosing a vessel is therefore as much about selecting your preferred sailing dates as it is about finding the perfect ship!

For example, the Nile cruiser I travelled on, the M/S Princess Sarah, departs every Wednesday from Aswan on its river cruise down to Luxor and heads back from Luxor to Aswan every Saturday.

If you therefore want to depart Aswan on a Monday, this vessel will currently not be an option for you!

Needless to say, if you book a tour of Egypt with a river cruise included, you don’t have to worry about this as your entire holiday itinerary from arrival in the country until departure will be set by the travel agency or tour operator.

However, if you are an independent traveller who wants to add a Nile cruise to your trip, you will need to plan carefully.

I would certainly recommend you to plan the dates of your Nile cruise first based on availability and preferred vessel and work out the rest of your Egypt itinerary from there.

Accommodation on board

Most Nile river boats have a wide variety of cabins available, ranging from twin and double cabins to family rooms and spacious suites.

The exact accommodation you select – as well as the exact ship you want to sail on – are therefore all factors which determine the price you pay for your cruise package.

You can generally expect each cabin to have a modern en-suite bathroom, air-conditioning, fridge and TV.

Depending on the ship you select you may only have a small window, sliding glass doors opening up for a perfect Nile view, or even a full balcony.

One thing you should note is that single cabins are non-existent on most Nile cruisers and the quoted prices you see are often per person based on dual occupancy.

That means that as a solo traveller you often have to pay a supplement when you want to book a private twin or double room.

Meals and drinks on board a Nile cruise

It depends on the exact Nile cruise package you book what meals and drinks are included in the price.

Most Nile cruises have breakfast, lunch and dinner included – with all of them served buffet style.

However, more luxury cruise boats may serve food à la carte and might even have multiple dining outlets on board.

In my case, all meals were included and served buffet style in the sole restaurant on board the ship, with multiple hot and cold dishes and sides available on each occasion.

Although bottled water was included in my cruise package, other drinks were not.

If you order something which is not included in your package, the costs will simply be billed to your room number after signing the bill and you pay everything upon check-out.

Alcoholic drinks such as beer, wine and liqueurs are usually all available on board the ship and can be ordered in the restaurant with your meal, or while lounging in the onboard bar or on the outdoor deck.

Expect prices for drinks to be slightly higher than they are in the average tourist-oriented restaurant in Egypt.

Can you bring your own food and drinks on board?

It is usually possible to bring your own food and drinks on board your river boat, although you should of course not do so in an overt way and only consume it in the privacy of your own cabin.

Before embarkation of my Nile cruise, I stocked up on some booze and mixers, or to be precise a bottle of wine, gin and a few beers.

Sipping a gin tonic from the seating corner of my cabin with the sliding door fully opened to lovely views over the banks of the Nile was certainly a top cruise experience.

Although I don’t know any liqueur store in Aswan, you can buy alcohol from a chain store called Drinkies in both Luxor and Cairo.

WiFi internet on board

Many Nile river boats nowadays have WiFi internet installed, although network reliability and speeds can be rather erratic.

Indeed, on my own Nile cruise the WiFi signal basically only covered the lobby area – and even there I didn’t manage to get the internet working.

Although this may of course be better on other vessels, I would highly recommend to buy a local SIM card with plenty of mobile data before you embark on your cruise.

Mobile coverage along the Nile is generally excellent and I had no problems whatsoever accessing websites or uploading my cruise pictures to social media.

Tipping on board your Nile cruise

It is customary to tip the personnel on board your river boat, although this is usually done at the end of your cruise.

On my own river cruise, all passengers were given an envelope on the final night for their tips.

Upon check-out, the envelopes are collected, the money added up and then divided among all staff members on board, from the waiters to the cleaners and cooks.

You therefore do not have to tip people individually (although you can do so if you want, of course) but rather can leave one big tip at the end in your envelope.

However, do note that these tips only go towards the staff who are directly employed on the river boat.

Therefore, you will have to tip your guide and drivers for excursions separately.

How can I book a Nile cruise?

There are lots of travel agencies and tour operators where you can book your Nile river cruise.

I arranged my entire cruise package through Luxor & Aswan Travel Agency , a local Egyptian tour agency which I can wholeheartedly recommend for their reliability and easy communication by e-mail and Whatsapp.

Most travel agencies like Luxor & Aswan Travel allow you to choose between dozens of vessels and departure dates.

Big international travel agencies and cruise outfits in Europe and the US may also offer Nile cruises, with some of them even having their own vessels.

Depending on your exact wishes it is therefore always a good idea to shop a bit around and see what the options are.

My own cruise experience

Embarking on a Nile river cruise is a fantastic way to take in the sights and natural landscapes of Egypt.

The River Nile has always been of great importance to Egypt by allowing for fast transportation and irrigation of the lands.

Without the Nile, the ancient Egyptian civilisation would never have existed in the first place.

By cruising down this mighty African river you really get a better sense of place and time as well as an appreciation of the unique Egyptian geography, culture and history.

Although I’m not your typical cruise passenger being an independent traveller, I tremendously enjoyed my own river cruise experience because of the aforementioned reasons.

Besides the fact that a river cruise is a logical choice of transport to take in some of the sights along the Nile between Luxor and Aswan, it is also an enjoyable way to travel.

There is just something magical about seeing the beautiful landscapes on the banks of the River Nile from the comfort of your own cruise ship.

Time spent on board is certainly not lost as you can relax with a drink, read a book, enjoy some good food, or simply sunbath on the top deck.

With a wide variety of vessels in different styles and comfort levels being available, there is always a suitable river cruise available which matches your preferences and budget.

Whether you opt for a short Nile river cruise between Aswan and Luxor or want to go for a longer itinerary, I can certainly recommend the experience!

How much should we expect the range of the cost that you ended up paying for your 4 day 3 night cruise – if you don’t mind me asking?

I am seeing standard cruises in viator to be in the 600-750 range! Should i expect my quote from Luxor and Aswan Best Travel agency to be higher or lower than that?

It’s impossible to answer this as it depends on a big number of factors. A lot of tour operators (and especially international websites like Viator!) might bump prices, quote only the lowest price on their website but in practice leave you with a much higher offer when you contact them.. And then it of course also depends on sailing date, cruise ship, exact itinerary, any add-ons such as (private) tours..

I would recommend two things:

– Ask as many price quotes of river cruise itineraries from different tour operators as possible and compare both prices and what is included in the package; – Check the online reviews so you know whether a tour operator is trustworthy and indeed delivers on everything.

From the top of my head I paid around $700 for the cruise, with all meals and private excursions (apart from the optional Abu Simbel trip) included. Unfortunately cannot confirm the exact amount at the moment as I’m on another trip and cannot easily find the email confirmations back… Note that the price I paid was based on sole occupancy of a cabin. The costs per person will be (much) lower if you travel as a couple or group.

Hi, your review is excellent and really helpful. I have a couple of specific questions regarding boat docking and access to the sites/temples, as I have mobility issues due to spine injury. If I were you I would contact your tour outfit (or prospective tour outfits if you haven’t booked a Nile cruise yet) to ask them about this. First of all it’s quite a specific question and unfortunately I won’t be able to answer it fully, and secondly, it will help you ensuring your needs will be taken care of. Especially if you haven’t booked anything yet you might be able to differentiate standard travel agencies from others which will go the extra mile to help you in answering your queries and providing assistance on the spot.

Generally, the ramp from the boat to the shore doesn’t have much of an incline and won’t be much longer than a metre/two metres max. There are always people at hand at the reception area of the ship to assist you with (dis)embarkation (also because they need to check how many people go off/if everyone has returned yet! So there will always be someone waiting at the ship’s entrance).

As for the sights: – Aswan: Boats are one level lower than the corniche at street level. There are stairs at most points, but I’m quite sure some have ramps too. Most of the city sights aren’t far away from the docking places. – Aswan side trips: Philae has a bit of walking and some steps. Abu Simbel is a bit of a longer walk from the main parking lot on uneven terrain (sand/gravel) – Kom Ombo: It’s a short distance walking from the boats to the temple (200-300 metres?). There were however some steps involved to reach the temple as it’s located on a hill. I’m not sure if there are also ramps to access the temple instead of the stairs – but distance-wise it’s the shortest of all the sites. – Edfu: Although the site is not close to the docking place, it’s probably the easiest one. If transport hasn’t been arranged as part of your Nile cruise (the traditional way is by horse carriage) you can easily charter it yourself as there will be dozens of horse and carriages waiting for business right in front of the boats. – Luxor: The boat docking place is quite some distance away from all the sights in Luxor, so you need some kind of transport to reach all the sights, whether it’s the East Bank sights such as Karnak or the Valley of the Kings. If it’s included in the tour it might be by bus (large groups) or vans or cars (smaller groups or private tours).

I hope this helps a bit! Sorry if I can’t give more details, as it’s hard to remember exactly and given that I didn’t pay specific attention to this I don’t want to give any wrong answers and err on the side of caution with what I say.

One big, fat disclaimer: Boat docking places at the sites are given on a first come, first serve basis. So the boat which arrives first will often take the best place/closest to the site!

Based on the review here, we booked on the Sonesta Moon Goddess March, 2023. We were disappointed. The rooms were indeed classic and comfortable. The carpets in the hall were old and stained. The HVAC systems in the room did not work properly despite engineering’s best efforts. Hot water was often hard to come by. The most disappointing element was the food. This was served buffet style, and almost never maintained hot. It was as if I had returned to my high school cafeteria. The staff were attentive and tried to please.

Six nile cruise sights: experience egypt.

I just received a text from a friend who is going on a Nile Cruise in March, and asked me about our itinerary. It was at this point I realized that while I had written a post on our Cairo visit (see post here ), with all the craziness of the last year and focusing on the new website, I had neglected to follow through on a Nile Cruise Sights post!

A cruise along the river Nile is, arguably, one of the main reasons to visit Egypt.  I mean, hasn’t everyone dreamed about this type of trip since reading or watching Agatha Christie’s fabulous mystery, Death on the Nile ?  It is along this vein, that I present to you, six of my personal favorite sights along the Nile that we experienced on our cruise.  There are hundreds, to be sure, but this little view will suffice in whetting your appetite!  Allons -y !

A cruise along the Nile River, the world’s longest river, is one of the most romantic ways to experience Egypt’s sights. Flying over the desert from Cairo to Luxor, one sees nothing but sand looking out of the plane window. Then out of nowhere, a beautiful, verdant swath of green emerges, bringing sustenance to the surrounding arid land. Ninety-five percent of Egypt’s 90 million people live along the banks of the Nile, making the Nile Valley one of the world’s most densely populated areas. It has and will continue to be the lifeblood of the country.

We started in Luxor and spent four nights cruising southward towards Aswan and the Sudan aboard the Sonesta St. George. Every day was action packed, often waking up at 5 am to the muezzin’s call to prayer. Drowsily, we woke up our three kids, 12, 14 and 16 at the time, scarfed down some tea and a roll, and set about meeting our guide, Mohamed Abdel Rahim, at 6 am for a full morning of touring temples and tombs. Why so early? Mainly to beat the heat and the crowds. Plus the light is prettier for photography, and you will usually return by lunchtime, after which a nap is in order, only to tour more when the sun starts to set.

Luxor and Karnak Temples

I was so excited to see the temple at Karnak I could hardly contain myself. Ever since the famous scene in The Spy Who Loved Me with James Bond chasing Barbara Bach among the dizzying number of columns at Karnak, it has literally been a dream of mine to visit. We went before sunset, along with hundreds of other people. Tourism has come raging back to Egypt after a 9 year slump after the Arab Spring uprising in 2010.

Within the city of Luxor, the temples of Luxor and Karnak are both located on the east side of the Nile. This is symbolic because the east side of the Nile is where the sun rises, symbolizing birth, and all temples found on the east side of the Nile honor gods. Conversely, tombs and funerary temples are located on the west side of the Nile where the sun sets, symbolizing death.

First, we toured the Karnak Temple, which is a series of temples, chapels and other buildings dating from 2055 BC that was the main religious center in Egypt. In fact, Karnak is said to the be largest religious center in the world, so large that St. Peter’s, the cathedral in Milan and Notre Dame would fit within its walls.

After a few hours, we walked to the nearby Luxor temple right around sunset. The complex was lit up and we were free to roam in and around this sandstone temple that was built approximately in 1400 BC and was an important political and religious center dedicated to the Egyptian god, Amon-Ra, who was responsible for all life on earth.

The Valley of the Kings and Queens

This is a pretty broad category since there are many tombs within this valley. For a period of over 500 years between the 16th and 11th centuries BC, the Valley of the Kings and Queens was the burial place for pharaohs and queens of the New Kingdom. Archaeologists, and treasure hunters (grave robbers) before them, have been unearthing the treasures in these tombs, the majority of which is in the great museum in Cairo (and now Giza…scheduled to open in 2020).

The two highlights for me were The Tomb of Nefertari, the first of the royal wives to Ramses the Great (Ramses the II), and the tomb of the “boy king” who died a sudden and mysterious death, King Tutankhamun.

Nefertari’s tomb was discovered in 1904 and is considered the “Sistine Capel of Ancient Egypt”. The wall paintings in her tomb are exquisite. Only 150 visitors are allowed every day, and tickets are first come first serve, hence the reason we woke up at 5 am. Once inside, we were only allowed 10 minutes and were not allowed to take any photos. Of course, we dutifully abided by both of these rules.

I am not sure how much of Tutankhamun’s history I need to touch on here as I am assuming you, like me, were obsessed by the discovery of the tomb. Because of the sudden death of King Tut at the age of 19, the tomb was not as grand as other Pharaoh tombs. Thus, it was largely overlooked by grave robbers, and when Howard Carter discovered the tomb in 1922, it was largely intact, revealing some of the greatest Egyptian treasure to have ever been found. Most of it is in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo (now Giza), but you will still see King Tut’s mummy, the sarcophagus, and one of the boxes that surrounded the sarcophagus.

Temple at Medinet Habu

As the Temple at Medinet Habu is a mortuary temple for Ramses III, it is located on the west side of the Nile. We visited in early morning, and had the temple almost all to ourselves, basking in the glow of early morning and taking in the glory of the structure. It is a large structure, significant for the series of reliefs relating the military exploits of Ramses III and his campaign against the Libyans and the war against the Sea Peoples.

The non our nile river cruise, the city of Edfu, is home to the Temple of Horus, the falcon-headed god. It is here that Horus and his uncle Seth were to have battled to determine who would succeed Osiris as king. The Temple of Edfu also one of the most beautiful and well-preserved temples in Egypt, owing its preservation to the fact that the temple lay under a thick layer of sand until discovery by French archaeologists in the 1860’s. The temple is interesting for the inscriptions on the walls that provide important background on the language, myths and religion of the Greco-Roman period in Egypt. Plus, part of the fun in visiting Edfu, is taking a horse drawn carriage from the boat to the temple and back again. It is chaotic and frenzied, but crazy fun.

Aswan and Abu Simbel Temple

Our Nile Cruise ended with sights in Aswan where we took a plane for a quick day trip to the temple of Abu Simbel.  Cited by many as Egypt’s prettiest town, Aswan is the kind of place where you would like to linger for a few days.  You can get lost in the spice markets, take a boat trip to the Philae Temple (see below), or just take a break from touring.  The stone quarries of ancient Egypt are located here and were celebrated for their stone, and would be another interesting tour.

However, the flight to Abu Simbel is a must IMHO. It is a short flight taking you to an area almost to the border of Sudan to see the great temple dedicated to the reign of Ramses II. Four seated colossi flank the entrance to the temple, two on either side, each representing Ramses II on his throne. The smaller statues below depict the enemies he conquered, the Nubians, Libyans and the Hittites. Be sure to have a traditional Nubian meal in a Nubian home at some point of the visit as well. Nubia was a powerful empire between Egypt and Ethiopia from the 6th to 14th centuries. It wasn’t until I had a Nubian meal that I felt as if I were on the African continent and was an interesting addition to our itinerary.

Philae Temple

Philae Temple was built in 280 BC during Egypt’s Greco-Roman period. At one point, Philae Temple was a Coptic Christian Church. When the old Aswan dam was built in 1902, the temple flooded and at one point was almost underwater. Therefore, prior to completion of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960’s, the temple was moved to higher ground, on an island next to the original site which was said to be the final resting place of Osiris. Also known by the Greek name, “Elephantine”, the temple was an important center for trade, specifically ivory. You hire a boat to take you there and it takes a couple of hours, but makes for a good opportunity to buy some Nubian souvenirs. My son brought 10 Nubian hats home to all of his friends, who take great pride in wearing them to school.

TRAVEL NOTES: Our trip was arranged through Indagare , a travel company of which I am a current member. They made everything seamless and arranged terrific guides, including our guide on the Nile, Mohammed Abd El-Rehim, [email protected]. Because we booked with only 4 months notice, we did not get our choice of boats, which is why I didn’t elaborate on the cruise itself in this post. While the crew on the Sonesta St. George went above and beyond, I would suggest you do your research in the type of vessel you prefer to book.

King Ramses - 13 days

Egypt is amazing! From the time we landed in Cairo to the time we left, we never once felt unsafe or unwelcome. The local people were all so warm, friendly and welcoming. Our tour was incredible, and that was in large part to our guide MoMo, who was so knowledgeable and passionate about all things Egypt. He was so friendly, funny and made our small group of strangers feel like a family after the first day. The information he shared was very indepth and insightful and I came away from this trip wanting to learn even more about the history of Egypt. Although we covered many miles visiting so many wonderful sites from Cairo to Giza, Kom Ombo, Aswan, Abu Simbel, Agilika Island and Luxor, we still had time to visit a local perfumery, an alabastor workshop, a papyrus factory and a spice store to pick up treasures to take home. There was also free time for us to enjoy taking in the sites of the small villages and farms as we relaxed on the deck of our Nile Cruise, and spending time on the beaches in Hurghada. Besides MoMo, I want to thank the whole On-The-Go team from those guides whom we only spent a day or two with, plus the drivers and to all those people involved in the organizing of this tour for making this a truly amazing experience! If Egypt is not on your bucket list, it should be as you will never regret making the journey.

Pharaohs Nile Cruise Adventure - Return Flights Included

We joined the tour as three people, my friend and my sister. We were welcomed as soon as we landed in Egypt in the middle of the night. Ahmed welcomed us at our hotel and helped us with early check-in. A smooth transfer was made by plane to Luxor. Our guide Ahmed Saladino welcomed us in Luxor. We spent 5 days with our guide Saladino. It went perfectly for us. Saladino was very knowledgeable and helpful in every aspect. Our balloon tour money, which was canceled due to wind, was refunded without any problems. Our group was quite harmonious. Many thanks to our guide Saladino, who did his best for us, and to tourradar and beyond the nile for the smooth organization. As soon as we were picked up from the airport, we were sent off from the airport with a warm farewell. The points I will criticize are; The ship is tired of years and unfortunately full of old materials. Even though the staff is devoted, this ship should definitely be better.

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.

Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.
