If you’ve booked a cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line, you might wonder what you can expect from their WiFi packages. How fast is the internet? And is it worth it?

We’ll share our firsthand experience using the Norwegian Cruise Line internet packages and answer your questions. We even conducted several speed tests to see how fast are Norwegian Cruise Line Internet Packages.

Here’s everything you need to know about Norwegian Cruise Line’s WiFi packages.

Norwegian Cruise Line Internet Packages

Norwegian Cruise Line offers two ways to purchase and use the internet.

NCL offers two unlimited internet packages, the basic Unlimited WiFi and an upgrade plan with faster speeds called Unlimited Premium WiFi .

Here’s what’s included with each package:

In addition to the packages above, you can purchase 250 minutes of internet , which can be used on your device or at the internet cafe on the cruise ship.

Unlimited WiFi Package

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Unlimited WiFi package provides internet access for web browsing, email, and social media. It’s designed for guests who need to stay connected but don’t require high bandwidth for streaming or downloading large files.

The chart below outlines the cost of the NCL Unlimited internet package. You’ll save money on the internet plan when you purchase the Unlimited WiFi plan in advance, as prices are higher once onboard the cruise ship.

Unlimited Premium WiFi Package

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Unlimited Premium WiFi package is a step up from their basic offering, catering to guests who need more robust internet connectivity during their cruise. The premium internet plan offers more bandwidth, allowing you to stream video and music, make video calls, and handle large file downloads or uploads.

The faster internet speeds also make it more pleasurable to surf the web.

The package is also designed to provide a more consistent and reliable internet connection, though this can vary with the ship’s location and other factors.

The chart below outlines the cost of the NCL Unlimited Premium Internet package. Like the basic WiFi plan, you’ll save money on the package when you purchase it in advance, as prices are higher once onboard the cruise ship.

How Fast is WiFi on NCL

Norwegian Prima Cruise ship docked at the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam

I recently tested the Unlimited WiFi package onboard Norwegian Bliss. The WiFi plan does not allow for streaming, but we were comfortable with the unlimited web browsing and email service.

So, how fast is Norwegian Cruise Line’s WiFi?

I conducted speed tests throughout the cruise to get an accurate measure of the internet speed at different times of the day and in different locations.

Norwegian’s Unlimited WiFI averages 3-5 Mbps download speed and upload speeds between 0.1-0.25 Mbps . These speeds are slower than you might be used to but fast enough for basic web surfing and on par for similar cruise ship internet packages.

We noticed a few days on the cruise where the WiFi continually went in and out. And speaking with other passengers, many mentioned the same issue. However, the internet connection was consistent and reliable on most days on the ship.

It should be noted that we were using the basic WiFi plan. You should expect faster speeds if you purchase the Unlimited Premium Internet Package.

Users who purchased the Premium WiFi reported internet speeds between 5 to 10 Mbps.

The most significant benefit of upgrading to Premium Internet is the ability to stream and video call. I’ll definitely purchase Premium WiFi on my next Norwegian cruise to take advantage of the faster speeds.

Bottom line:  Web pages may take a little longer to load than you are used to, and the connection might fade in and out depending on the ship’s location. The internet connection is reliable and fast enough for basic internet browsing.

How to Get a Discount on the Internet Packages

The starboard side of Norwegian Encore while docked in Nassau Bahamas

If you  purchase an internet package on your cruise , you can get a discount by booking in advance. Buying the internet package before your cruise sailing date saves you up to 15% on the WiFi plan.

You will pay full price once you get on board, so do yourself a favor and purchase it in advance.

You can also get a discount on internet packages as part of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Free at Sea Promotion .

The Free at Sea promotion offers several perks to customize your cruise experience. The popular promotion includes several benefits as part of the cruise fare, such as an NCL drinks package , shore excursion credits, and specialty dining options.

You can select “Free WiFi” as your Free at Sea perk, but you don’t get the full internet package.

The Free WiFi perk gives you 250 minutes of basic internet access to use anytime during your voyage. The number of free minutes you get depends on the length of your cruise:

  • For 3-6 day cruises, you’ll receive 75 minutes of WiFi.
  • For 7-12-day cruises, 150 minutes are included.
  • For cruises 13 days or longer, 300 minutes of WiFi is offered.

But you can upgrade to Free at Sea Plus for unlimited internet access.

What if you run out of minutes?

If you run out of minutes, you’ll have to purchase another internet package to continue accessing the cruise ship’s WiFi.

I recommend keeping your WiFi off when not in use, as many mobile apps periodically connect to the internet to receive updates, eating away at your precious minutes.

Tip: If you get an NCL’s Drink Package, I recommend choosing Free Drinks instead of the free WiFi. That’s because the drink package is more expensive, and you’ll save a lot more money than if you were to purchase the drink package and take the Free WiFi.

Using Multiple Devices With One Package

A woman standing infront of two cruise ships on her phone

Cruise ship internet is expensive. Fortunately, you can save money using one internet package with multiple devices.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s internet packages aren’t tied to one device, allowing you to switch between devices with a single-device plan. This means that even though the package is for one device at a time, it’s possible to alternate between different devices as needed.

For example, you can switch the connection between a laptop and a mobile phone as long as only one device is connected at a time. If you try to connect with a different device, the previously connected device loses internet connection.

Switching between devices is a great way to save money on your cruise if you don’t need a constant internet connection.

I am sailing on the Bliss next week and the website doesn’t show the premium internet. Do you know if that only can be booked onboard? Just to text family on board to get together for supper etc what is required if anything

Hi Monique,

You should be able to book it in advance, which I recommend. We were able to use the premium internet on our Norwegian Bliss voyage so I don’t know why it wouldn’t be available on your sailing. I don’t have any insider knowledge so I won’t be able to help much. But, you can call Norwegian support (1.866.234.7350) for specific information or visit https://www.ncl.com/ca/en/onboard-packages/internet-packages

The Formation and Essence of Authentic Emeralds

An image showcasing the mesmerizing journey of an emerald's formation

As I delve into the enchanting world of emeralds, I find myself mesmerized by their beginnings and allure.

These precious gemstones are born deep within the Colombian mountains, where rare elements and geological forces collide. The intense heat and pressure create magnificent crystals that slowly cool over time.

To determine their authenticity, one must examine their flaws, as even the slightest imperfections do not diminish their value.

The vibrant green hues, ranging from subtle to intense, make emeralds highly coveted. Their durability ensures they withstand the test of time, making them a valuable investment.

  • Emeralds are formed deep in the mountains of Colombia through the combination of rare elements brought together by geological forces.
  • Flaws in color or shape indicate the authenticity of emeralds, and slight imperfections do not reduce their value.
  • The intense green color of emeralds, especially grass-green, is considered the most valuable, and personal preference plays a role in selecting the green color of an emerald.
  • Emeralds are durable gemstones, resisting abrasion and scratches over time, making them suitable for long-lasting jewelry.

Geological Forces and Rare Elements

I learned that emeralds form deep in the mountains of Colombia, where rare elements like beryllium and chromium are brought together by geological forces. These forces create the perfect conditions for the formation of emeralds, with high temperatures and pressures needed for their growth.

The mining techniques used to extract emeralds from these mountains are precise and require skilled workers. Emerald mining is a significant part of Colombian culture, as emeralds hold great value and are often used in traditional jewelry and artifacts. They are considered a symbol of wealth and prestige.

The beauty and rarity of emeralds have made them highly sought after worldwide. Colombian emeralds are known for their exceptional quality and vibrant green color, making them truly unique and treasured gems.

Formation Process of Emeralds

The combination of rare elements and geological forces deep in the mountains of Colombia brings about the formation of emeralds. These precious gemstones are highly valued for their vibrant green color and durability.

When it comes to mining emeralds, various techniques are employed to extract the gemstones from the earth. This includes both traditional methods, such as hand tools and manual labor, as well as more modern techniques, such as mechanized mining and underground tunnels.

However, the environmental impact of emerald mining cannot be ignored. The process of extracting these gemstones can lead to deforestation, soil erosion, and water pollution. It is crucial for mining companies to implement sustainable practices and minimize their impact on the environment.

Additionally, efforts must be made to rehabilitate and restore the areas affected by mining activities to ensure the long-term preservation of these valuable natural resources.

Indicators of Authenticity

Color and shape flaws in emeralds indicate their authenticity and do not diminish their value. When it comes to emeralds, it’s important to understand how to distinguish between genuine stones and imitations. Here are some methods of emerald testing to help you make an informed decision:

Visual Inspection: Examine the color and clarity of the stone. Genuine emeralds typically have a deep, rich green color with slight imperfections.

Refractive Index: Use a refractometer to measure the refractive index of the stone. Authentic emeralds have a specific range of refractive index values.

Magnification: Inspect the stone under a microscope to identify natural inclusions and flaws. Synthetic emeralds often lack these natural imperfections.

UV Testing: Shine ultraviolet light on the stone to see if it exhibits the characteristic red fluorescence of genuine emeralds.

The Value of Brilliance and Intense Green Color

When shopping for emeralds, it’s important to consider the value of brilliance and an intense green color. The shine and identity of emeralds are significant factors in determining their worth. Personal preference also plays a role in selecting the color of an emerald. Emeralds have a unique green color that can vary from stone to stone. To give you a better understanding, here is a table that illustrates the different shades of green:

The intensity and hue of the green color can greatly affect the shine and identity of the emerald. Ultimately, it is up to personal preference to choose the perfect green color that speaks to you.

Unique Green Color Variation

I personally find it fascinating how emeralds can have such a wide range of green shades.

The green color grading of emeralds is a complex process that involves evaluating the intensity and hue of the stone’s green color. Factors affecting color intensity include the presence of impurities and the amount of chromium and vanadium in the crystal lattice structure of the emerald.

Impurities can create a yellowish or bluish tint, while higher levels of chromium and vanadium result in a more intense green color. Light and dark tones can also affect the overall appearance of the stone.

Gemologists use specialized tools and techniques to grade emeralds based on their green color, ensuring that each stone meets the highest standards of quality and beauty.

Durability and Longevity

Emeralds are known for their durability and ability to withstand abrasion and environmental factors, making them a long-lasting investment. When considering the durability of emeralds, it is important to understand the difference between durability and hardness.

While emeralds may not be as hard as diamonds, they are still substantial gemstones that resist scratches and abrasion over time. Environmental factors such as dirt and sand do not easily damage emeralds, further enhancing their longevity.

This durability ensures that emeralds can be worn and enjoyed for years to come without losing their beauty or value. So, when investing in emeralds, you can have peace of mind knowing that they will remain stunning and resilient, even in the face of everyday wear and tear.

Emeralds as the Perfect Gift Choice

Choosing an emerald as a gift is an excellent choice because of its unique green color and durability. Emeralds are not only stunning gemstones but also hold historical significance. They have been revered for centuries and are considered birthstone options for the month of May.

The historical significance of emeralds can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where they were believed to possess healing powers and bring good fortune. In addition, emeralds have been cherished by royalty and nobility throughout history. They have adorned the crowns and jewelry of kings and queens, symbolizing wealth and power.

Today, emeralds continue to be highly prized and are sought after by collectors and jewelry enthusiasts alike. When choosing an emerald as a gift, you are not only selecting a beautiful gemstone but also a piece of history and tradition.

How Do Geological Forces and Rare Elements Contribute to the Formation of Emeralds?

Geological forces and rare elements combine to form emeralds deep in the mountains of Colombia. These forces bring together beryllium and chromium, creating the perfect conditions of high temperature and pressure for the formation of these precious gemstones.

What Is the Specific Process by Which Emeralds Are Formed Under High Temperature and Pressure Conditions?

The formation process of emeralds is like a slow-cooking recipe. Under high temperature and pressure conditions, rare elements like beryllium and chromium combine, resulting in the growth of large crystals with intense green color.

How Can One Determine the Authenticity of an Emerald Based on Its Flaws in Color or Shape?

Determining authenticity of an emerald is based on flaws in color or shape. Imperfections do not devalue the stone. Expertise is necessary for accurate evaluation and comparing emeralds.

Why Do Emeralds With Slight Imperfections Still Hold Value in the Market?

Emeralds with slight imperfections still hold value in the market because they exhibit authenticity and uniqueness. Market demand for imperfect emeralds is driven by their rarity and the belief that flaws add character and individuality to the stone.

What Factors Contribute to the High Value of Emeralds, Such as Brilliance and Intense Green Color?

Brilliance and intensity, along with rarity and demand, contribute to the high value of emeralds. These stunning gemstones captivate with their vibrant green color and dazzling sparkle, making them highly sought after in the market.

I love making Death by Chocolate in my Dutch oven because it’s the perfect indulgent treat for any occasion. This decadent chocolate dessert combines rich cocoa powder, brown sugar, and mini marshmallows to create a gooey, fudgy base.

From classic combinations like peach or cherry to more unique options like mixed berries or tropical fruits, the choice is yours. Get creative with your fruit filling options! Orange-Scented Desserts: Sweet and Tangy Delights Using Fresh Oranges

Using fresh oranges, I love creating sweet and tangy orange-scented desserts that are bursting with flavor. There are so many creative ways to use orange zest and juice in your baking. Here are three delightful orange-scented desserts that will satisfy your sweet tooth:

Orange-Scented Cake: Cut the top off oranges and scoop out the insides. Fill the oranges with muffin or cake mix and top with the orange top. Wrap them in foil and bake them to perfection. This dessert is not only healthy but also makes for a delicious breakfast when filled with pancake batter.

Orange-Scented Glazes: Drizzle an orange-scented glaze over your favorite cakes or pastries for an added burst of flavor. Simply combine powdered sugar with orange zest and juice until you achieve a smooth and pourable consistency.

Orange-Scented Frostings: Add a twist to your frostings by incorporating orange zest and juice. Whip together butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a hint of orange zest and juice until light and fluffy. Spread this luscious frosting over your cakes and cupcakes for a citrusy delight.

With the vibrant aroma and tangy taste of oranges, these orange-scented desserts will surely leave you craving for more.

S’mores-Inspired Desserts: Indulge in the Classic Campfire Treat Without a Fire

To recreate the classic campfire treat without a fire, simply combine sugar, melted butter, egg, and vanilla in a bowl. These ingredients will form the base for your s’mores-inspired dessert.

Now, let’s get creative with some unique twists on this beloved treat. How about trying a s’more bar? Press the mixture into a pan and partially bake it. Then, top it with marshmallows, chocolate chips, and more graham cracker crumbs.

Another option is to make s’more cookies by incorporating the classic flavors into a cookie dough.

You can also make s’more dip by layering melted chocolate and marshmallow fluff in a baking dish, and then serving it with graham crackers for dipping.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to enjoying s’mores without a fire. So go ahead, indulge in this sweet and gooey delight anytime, anywhere.

Baked Banana Desserts: Delicious and Gooey Banana Creations

I love baking banana desserts because they always turn out deliciously gooey and full of flavor.

One of my favorite recipes is for caramelized banana delights. To make these gooey banana treats, I start by melting some butter in a skillet and adding brown sugar and cinnamon. Once the mixture is bubbling and fragrant, I add sliced bananas and cook them until they become caramelized and soft. The aroma that fills the kitchen is absolutely heavenly!

Once the bananas are caramelized, I like to add some toppings like pecans, coconut, or even some pound cake for extra indulgence. I serve these warm over a scoop of ice cream and sprinkle on some additional toppings for a truly decadent dessert. The combination of the caramelized bananas, creamy ice cream, and crunchy toppings is simply irresistible.

These caramelized banana delights are the perfect way to satisfy a sweet tooth and enjoy the natural sweetness of ripe bananas.

No-Bake Cheesecake: Easy and Creamy Dessert That Requires No Oven

No oven is needed to make this easy and creamy no-bake cheesecake. It’s the perfect dessert for those hot summer days when you don’t want to turn on your oven. The best part is, you can get creative with the flavors and toppings to make it your own.

For alternative flavors, you can try adding in some fresh fruit like strawberries or blueberries for a burst of sweetness. You can also experiment with different extracts like almond or coconut to give your cheesecake a unique twist. As for toppings, the possibilities are endless. You can go traditional with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of chocolate shavings, or get adventurous with crushed cookies, caramel sauce, or even a drizzle of Nutella.

When it comes to presentation, think outside the box. Instead of the usual round cheesecake, try making individual mini cheesecakes in jars or using a muffin tin for bite-sized treats. You can also get creative with the crust by using crushed pretzels or graham crackers for added texture and flavor.

No-bake cheesecake is a versatile dessert that allows you to let your imagination run wild. So go ahead, get creative, and enjoy a delicious and hassle-free treat that will leave everyone asking for seconds.

Cinnamon Apple Crumble: Warm and Comforting Dessert With a Crunchy Topping

Baking up a warm and comforting cinnamon apple crumble is a delightful way to enjoy a crunchy topping on a chilly evening. This classic dessert is a perfect combination of sweet apples, warm spices, and a buttery crumble on top.

While cinnamon apple is a popular flavor, you can also explore alternative fruit options like pear or peach to create a unique twist.

The key to a delicious crumble lies in the creative crumble toppings. You can add chopped nuts, such as walnuts or pecans, for extra crunch. Sprinkling a handful of oats or shredded coconut on top adds texture and flavor.

Don’t forget to drizzle some caramel or maple syrup over the finished crumble for a decadent touch. With its comforting aroma and delightful taste, cinnamon apple crumble is sure to become a favorite dessert for any occasion.

How Much Internet Costs on Norwegian Cruise Lines

Just a few years ago, it was no big deal to go without Internet during your cruise. In fact, many passengers did (and many still do). But Internet packages have become commonplace across cruise lines. Meanwhile, as everyone lives more connected lives, the prospect of being without some sort of connection back home has less appeal.

Of course, the cruise lines are happy to provide Internet as a service on a cruise ship, for a price. Packages across lines can run from as little as $5 per day for some basic functionality to as much as $35 per day to access streaming services and more.

When it comes to Norwegian Cruise Lines, they offer a unique take on the cost of Internet on the ship. While most lines offer it as an additional charge, Norwegian has it as an additional charge, or part of a perk system with its popular “Free at Sea” sale .

With this sale, you get to pick up to six perks to include in the cost of your cruise, including things like free drinks, free specialty restaurants, and free wi-fi. In other words, you could sail on Norwegian and not have to pay extra to get online if you select the free perk.

However, not everyone selects this sale (in fact you can many times save money by foregoing it). Further, not everyone selects free wi-fi as one of the perks even if they do book the sale.

For those passengers, you’ll have to buy Internet on the ship as an additional charge. So how much does it cost?

The Cost of Internet on NCL

If you want to get online during your cruise, then you have two options. First, you can use one of the ship’s computers. There is a small Internet cafe on ships (more likely just a couple of computers) and we also found computers with online access in the game room.

These banks of computers are ideal if you only want to quickly check email and don’t want to pay for continued Internet access.

For those wanting constant access online — and on their own devices — then Norwegian also offers unlimited access of varying levels.

Take a look at the costs you can expect:

Norwegian Cruise Internet prices

As you can see, accessing the Internet you have several choices:

  • Pay-as-you-go: $0.99 per minute
  • 100 minutes : $75.00
  • 250 minutes: $125.00
  • Unlimited Social Media (access to social media sites): $14.99 per day
  • Unlimited Wi-Fi (access to the web, but no streaming): $29.99 per day
  • Unlimited Premium Wi-Fi (access to streaming and VPN): $34.99 per day

Note that the unlimited packages are available for purchase up until 10 p.m. on the first day of the cruise. They also must be bought for the length of the cruise. You can’t just buy it for a single day or wait until halfway through the cruise to purchase. As well, this is the price for only one device in use at a time. If you want to share the access on multiple devices you’ll need to log out of one device and then access with the second one.

If you want to save some money and know you’ll need Internet access, then be sure to book your Internet package ahead of time via the NCL website . Doing so will save you 15% off the prices aboard the ship.

Wi-Fi on cruise ships: 5 things to know about internet use on board

Gene Sloan

I have good news for those of you who assume the only way to stay in touch with home from a cruise ship is via a message in a bottle: Cruise ships come equipped with internet, and cruise Wi-Fi connections have been getting faster at a rapid rate — and cheaper, too.

While checking emails and surfing the web on some vessels still requires the patience of Job, onboard technological improvements on many ships combined with new satellite and direct ship-to-shore systems is making cruise internet access much more like what you find on land.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If you're a first-time cruiser, you're likely most concerned with the basics: Do cruise ships have Wi-Fi and how much does Wi-Fi cost on a cruise? Repeat cruisers who have paid the price for finicky service may be wondering the best way to access fast connection speeds across their devices while avoiding unnecessary charges.

I can guide you through the ins and outs of Wi-Fi on cruise ships. Here are five things to know about onboard internet before you set sail.

Wi-Fi on cruise ships will never be as fast (or reliable) as home

Yes, all cruise ships today offer an internet connection, but it might not be the seamless experience you've come to expect on land.

For most of the many years I've been writing about cruising, the typical internet connection at sea hasn't just been slow. It's been glacial. You'd click on a website only to experience many seconds of frustration. Maybe the page would come up. Maybe it wouldn't. Maybe the cruise would end while you were still sitting there.

Related: 16 mistakes cruise ship passengers make on disembarkation day

Why the slow speeds? To start, there is no Comcast cable wire running to your cruise ship. On cruise ships, every packet of data you are downloading onto your phone or computer, for the most part, is coming over a satellite, which is not a quick or inexpensive proposition.

The maritime communication companies that specialize in providing internet connections to ships have been trying to speed things up in recent years. Solutions have included adding more satellites and linking their systems to land-based towers that connect with ships as they near shore.

norwegian cruise line internet access

But, in the end, there are limits to just how well a satellite system can work. For starters, a ship needs a clear "line of sight" to a satellite to exchange data, something that isn't always the case. Cruise ships traveling through the famed Norwegian fjords, for instance, can lose their satellite signal due to the height of surrounding mountains.

And there are certain parts of the world where satellite coverage is too thin or nonexistent to allow for internet access on cruise ships. During a sailing in the Russian Arctic on a Hapag-Lloyd Cruises ship, I was forced to live without internet for a good part of a week due to a lack of satellite coverage in the area (something, I must say, was kind of wonderful).

So while onboard cruise Wi-Fi speeds are getting better, they'll never be as fast as at home, where a hard wire brings the signal straight to your router.

Onboard internet speed is getting much faster

On some cruise ships, the signal has become so much faster you now can stream Netflix from the comfort of your cabin — something that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.

New satellite systems, paired with multimillion-dollar investments in shipboard technology, really are making things better in a big way. A turning point came in 2014, when cruise giant Royal Caribbean partnered with satellite company O3b Networks to create a new onboard internet system that it claimed was six times faster than anything else at sea. Called Voom, the system tapped into new Medium Earth Orbit satellites operated by O3b that can shoot their beams directly at ships as they move.

When I ran a speed test of Voom on Adventure of the Seas, I found the line's fastest option, the Surf + Stream service, usually offered download speeds of just around 3 megabits per second. I never found download speeds exceeding 4 Mbps, but I did see it drop as low as 1.5 Mbps. While still significantly slower than many home connections, that's fast enough to enjoy Netflix and other streaming video services, though I did experience grainy video and buffering issues on occasion.

norwegian cruise line internet access

Royal Caribbean still claims Voom is the fastest and best Wi-Fi option on cruise ships today. But we're a bit skeptical – not because the Wi-Fi is slower than stated, but because other cruise lines, like Carnival Cruise Line , are quickly catching up.

Carnival cruise Wi-Fi is also fast enough to support Netflix streaming on some ships, the company says. The cruise line uses a hybrid system that combines faster satellite connections at sea with a network of less-expensive land-based towers that take over as its vessels near coastal areas.

On a sailing on one of the Carnival ships outfitted for faster internet, Carnival Sunrise , I did notice a significant improvement in cruise Wi-Fi speed. But the promised access to Netflix streaming wasn't quite as smooth as I had hoped. Clicking on a favorite show, I only could watch for a few minutes before the connection inevitably froze.

Some lines in just the last year or so have begun partnering with Elon Musk's Starlink system for speedy internet.

Cruise internet costs have gone down

Just a few years back, you had to pay a small fortune for the privilege of accessing the internet on a cruise ship. The base rate for onboard Wi-Fi for years started around 75 cents a minute. That's $45 for a single hour online!

The old pay-by-the-minute system, which could leave even modest internet users with sky-high bills, is now giving way to simpler and more affordable "all you can browse" plans on many lines.

How much does Wi-Fi cost on a cruise today? Well, the highest-speed version of Royal Caribbean's Voom connection currently costs $26.99 per day for one device. In the old days of 75 cents-a-minute pricing, that same amount of money would have gotten you just 36 minutes of web time.

Royal Caribbean also offers a slower-speed version of Voom that can't support streaming for $19.99 per day for one device. For both cruise internet packages, there are discounts for adding more devices and purchasing a package online before your sailing.

Another line bringing down internet costs dramatically is Carnival. At the very low end, it now offers a Social Wi-Fi plan that allows access to all the key social sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) as well as messaging services such as WhatsApp, for just $15.30 a day ($18 when purchased on board). A slightly more expensive Value Wi-Fi plan, at $19.55 per day when bought in advance ($23 per day when bought on board), adds access to email and most websites.

The line's top-tier Premium Wi-Fi plan, at $21.25 per day when bought in advance ($25 when bought onboard), triples the speed of the Value plan and adds access to VoIP calling on messaging apps and Skype (but not FaceTime). Note that you might be able to make Wi-Fi calls from an iPhone or via WhatsApp, even with the less expensive plan. Passengers who pay for a Carnival Cruise Wi-Fi plan in advance of sailing get a 15% discount.

But perhaps the biggest development in cruise internet costs in recent years is that many higher-end lines have begun offering internet access for — get this — free. Viking , Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises are among lines now including unlimited internet time in the base cost of a voyage. At some of these lines, such as Regent, you can pay extra for faster service.

norwegian cruise line internet access

Another way to get free or cheaper internet time on ships is to join cruise line loyalty programs . Many offer free cruise Wi-Fi or discounted package pricing to customers who hit mid- to upper-tier levels.

At Celebrity Cruises, for instance, the top Zenith tier in the line's Captain's Club loyalty program comes with unlimited free Premium-level internet (the fastest plan at the line). At Princess Cruises , customers can get 50 percent off MedallionNet internet packages after reaching the Platinum level in the line's Captain's Circle loyalty program (to qualify, you'll need to complete either five cruises, or 50 cruise days).

On Royal Caribbean, the path to free Internet on a cruise is through its high-end suites . Book a room in a Sky Class or Star Class suite (all suites above the junior suite level), and you'll receive free Voom.

Apps offer an alternative to paid cruise Wi-Fi

In recent years, a growing number of cruise lines have rolled out free apps for your phone that will let you make reservations for onboard restaurants, spa treatments and other services without ever leaving your pool deck lounge chair. On some ships operated by Carnival, you even can order beer and pizza to wherever you happen to be using an app.

norwegian cruise line internet access

Many of these apps also will show you a schedule of daily activities, offer ship deck plans and sometimes port maps to help you get around, and let you check your onboard account statement in real time. On Celebrity Edge and other Celebrity Cruises Edge-class ships, you can even use an app to remotely open your cabin door, change channels on the television and turn off the lights.

While all these apps work off cruise ship Wi-Fi, the good news is they don't require the purchase of a plan to use. Nor do they come with any other sort of fee — at least for most features.

At Carnival, you'll pay $5 per cruise to add a "chat" feature to the line's otherwise free HUB app that will let you communicate via text-like messages with other app-enabled passengers. Norwegian Cruise Line also requires passengers to pay a fee (currently $9.95 per cruise) to use a messaging and calling feature of its Cruise Norwegian app.

Cruise internet tip: Use airplane mode to avoid unwanted charges

Whether or not you're purchasing a Wi-Fi plan on a cruise ship, I have one very strong piece of advice: Put your phone in airplane mode the moment you step on board the vessel and leave it that way for the duration of the sailing.

This is the safest way to avoid unwanted data charges, which can be enormous. (Remember the story of a family that racked up $14,000 in data charges on a cruise?)

As many cruisers have found the hard way, international phone plans such as AT&T's $10-a-day International Day Pass do not apply to cruise ships at sea. If you let your AT&T phone roam while you're on a vessel, you'll pay $2.05 per megabyte of data — even if your base plan at home offers you unlimited data. You'll also pay $3 per minute to make a call, $0.50 per text and $1.30 to send a photo. All that adds up very quickly.

norwegian cruise line internet access

AT&T does offer a " Cruise Plus " plan for a flat fee of $100 that allows unlimited talk and text during sailings up to 30 days in duration. But it only comes with 1 gigabyte of data (which may seem like a lot until you start streaming movies), with any overage billing at a still-hefty $10 per 100 megabytes. It's also not available on every ship. More than 175 vessels are part of the program.

If you insist on leaving your cellular service on during a cruise, you should at least disable any apps running in the background (as they'll be eating up data, and running up your bill) and disable email auto-check.

Personally, I find it easier to just hit the airplane mode button. Once in airplane mode, I reactivate the Wi-Fi feature on my phone to access the cruise Wi-Fi, and sign up for a shipboard plan that will let me stay in touch by email or a VoIP service like WhatsApp.

The Cruise Norwegian App

Norwegian Cruise Line’s smartphone app, Cruise Norwegian, is available to download on Apple’s App Store and the Google Play store for phones using the Android operating system. Every ship in the Norwegian fleet is app compatible, meaning the onboard functions will work no matter which vessel you’re sailing.

It’s free to download, and we highly recommend downloading it right after booking your cruise. The app includes a “pre-cruise” mode that allows you to pre-book your onboard activities, dining reservations, shore excursions, and entertainment and view your trip itinerary and summary.

norwegian cruise line tablet internet wifi

Also, before boarding the ship, you can use the app to purchase onboard gifts like wine, flowers, and treats; check in online; and access your e-Docs on embarkation day.

We also recommend downloading any cruise line’s app in advance simply because it will be easier than downloading it on the ship’s Wi-Fi.

Features and functions of the app include, but are not limited to:

  • Book shore excursions
  • Make dining reservations
  • Preview entertainment, spa treatments, and bars
  • ‘Favorite’ onboard offerings
  • Track onboard purchases
  • View the daily schedule
  • Review disembarkation information
  • Check your Latitude Rewards points
  • Call and message friends and family that are sailing onboard with you (a one-time fee is required for this function)

Starlink on cruise ships: Which lines have faster internet connections on board?

N o matter how far your cruise roams, staying connected to the internet can be as important for some cruisers as oxygen and water. Whether you're keen on live-streaming penguins from your balcony on an Antarctica cruise, catching up on your favorite TV series or hopping on a Zoom call in the middle of the Pacific, connectivity and high-speed access are now considered essentials when cruising.

In the past, cruise lines struggled to keep up with the demand for seamless connectivity at sea. In the middle of an ocean, ships had to rely on satellite systems that could be unreliable, prohibitively expensive and maddeningly slow. Satellite systems allotted only so much broadband for each ship, and every ship carried thousands of people, each with multiple devices.

A better solution was required. Enter Starlink, the world's first and largest satellite constellation using a low Earth orbit to deliver broadband internet. Part of Elon Musk's SpaceX program, Starlink now provides many cruise ships with bandwidth that can support streaming, online gaming, video calls and more worldwide. Starlink debuted in 2019 and has quickly revolutionized how hundreds of cruise ships provide internet access, boosting connectivity and capacity as ships roam the world.

Will your next cruise offer landlike Wi-Fi speeds? Here is everything you need to know about Starlink on cruise ships.

How does Starlink work?

Compared to standard communications satellites, which orbit from 22,000 miles away, Starlink's thousands of satellites orbit the atmosphere from about 340 miles above the Earth's surface. With much closer proximity to Earth, Starlink's data connections offer stronger and faster connections and provide the opportunity for more bandwidth on cruise ships.

The coverage of the Starlink satellites is extensive and growing, with more than 5,400 satellites currently in orbit and plans in future years to reach up to 42,000 satellites in orbit at once. Traditional satellite networks have a much more limited fleet and reach, especially in some of the ocean's most remote areas. Starlink is the world's largest satellite constellation, with near-complete coverage of all the world's oceans and waterways.

The Starlink system is affixed to ships as a series of flat panels positioned on upper decks, replacing the now antiquated domes often placed near the ship's funnel and radar masts.

How fast is Starlink internet access?

Starlink's website estimates download speeds that range from 40 to over 200 Mbps and upload speeds that come in at 8 to more than 25 Mbps, with a latency of less than 99 milliseconds. These are wide-ranging estimates that don't factor in cruise ship-based throttling, cruise ship capacity, global positioning and the costs and challenges of outfitting a cruise ship with bow-to-stern Wi-Fi connectivity.

The industrial-strength steel frames and fireproof materials used throughout the ship make a strong, consistent signal throughout a cruise ship an industry-wide challenge. There will be patches on a ship, regardless of which line you're sailing, where you'll find a weaker signal. Signals are often at their strongest in the main public gathering areas.

Similar to traditional satellites, severe weather can be a factor in Starlink connections while at sea. Intense storms can bring temporary service interruptions or reduced speeds, while heavy rain or snowfall can cause signal attenuation, which might cause a brief loss of connectivity.

Cruises with Starlink

Here's a full rundown of all the major cruise lines sailing with the new Starlink technology. How much will the connectivity cost you? Check TPG's guide to Wi-Fi access on cruise ships.

Note: Starlink on cruises can be a white label service, depending on the line. While the cruise line might not advertise that it uses the new Wi-Fi technology, the list below will help to identify which lines are sailing with Starlink.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises selling luxury suite on 140-day world cruise on sale for US$1.7 million

Cruise vacations cover a range of budgets, with some bargain jaunts costing a few hundred dollars, while more upscale, longer voyages lay on more perks to justify the big expense.

But a new offering by luxury operator Regent Seven Seas Cruises raises the price tag to eye-watering levels, with a suite on an upcoming 140-day world voyage costing US$1.7 million (NZ$2.9 million).

The cruise line is pitching this 2027 voyage as a "once-in-a-lifetime experience" on board its Seven Seas Splendor liner. Over 20 weeks, this cruise ship will visit 71 ports, including stopovers in Bali, Sydney and Mumbai.

More from Newshub

Andrea DeMarco, president of Regent Seven Seas Cruises, told CNN Travel the cruise line has seen a "fantastic response" since announcing the voyage earlier this week, and that there's been "strong interest" among prospective passengers in the US$1.7 million Regent Suite .

Whatever room guests opt for, there are steep costs involved, with the most affordable room onboard starting at US$91,499 (NZ$154,000) per guest. Meanwhile, the 4443 square feet Regent Suite is designed for two people, so that high price tag works out as US$839,999 (NZ$1.4 million) per guest.

Prospective passengers willing to splash that kind of cash get what DeMarco calls a "palatial" apartment in which to ride out the world cruise – think original Picasso art on the wall, 14th-deck ocean views and a grand piano.

The heady price also includes first class air tickets for cruise-associated domestic US flights, and business class tickets for all international flights. Plus, Regent Suite guests have access to a variety of perks including a personal tour guide at each destination, in-suite spa services, an on-call butler and personalized stationery for writing dispatches home.

The two-bedroom suite is also kitted out with a vast living room, three walk-in closets and an in-suite spa with a sauna, steam room and jetted tub.

Regent Seven Seas' 2027 world cruise officially opens for reservations on April 10, 2024, but prospective guests have been able to preregister since Wednesday.

Onboard decadence

Whether guests opt for the Regent Suite or not, prospective Regent Seven Seas Cruises travellers should expect onboard decadence.

The Seven Seas Splendor ship hosts an art collection worth US$5 million, including two works by Joan Miró, the aforementioned Picasso hanging in the Regent Suite, and another Picasso adorning the walls of the onboard steakhouse.

Speaking of food, the cruise line's pledged to carry 13,000 pounds of lobster, 14,000 pounds of filet mignon, 3600 pounds of smoked salmon, 150 pounds pounds of caviar and 14,000 bottles of champagne for its 2027 world cruise.

Flights, excursions and alcohol are included in all ticket prices. And every suite has a private balcony for travelers to enjoy.

Popularity of world cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises, a subsidiary of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, is one of several cruise lines that operate annual around-the-world cruises. Every world cruise comes with a pretty steep price tag, with Regent Seven Seas' offerings at the priciest end of the spectrum.

Cruise line president DeMarco told CNN Travel that the fact Regent Seven Seas' world cruise is "truly all-inclusive" means there's "value" associated with these high costs.

The cruise line is currently operating a sold-out 2024 world cruise on board its Seven Seas Mariner cruise ship, while its 2025 world cruise also sold out in what Regent Seven Seas' claimed was "record time." The cruise line's 2026 world voyage still has suites available at time of writing.

Regent Seven Seas' announcement comes at a time of high interest in world cruises. Royal Caribbean's Ultimate World Cruise, currently circumnavigating the world's oceans, unexpectedly captured the internet's imagination earlier this year, with passengers on board documenting their experience via viral TikTok videos.

Use of a private VPN (piVPN) on NCL ship internet.

Cool Cruiser

This question is mostly for fellow techno geeks:  have you managed to connect thru a private VPN on an NCL ship?  I use piVPN along with the wireguard client to connect securely to my home network.  I know they block most common commercial VPN ports, but has anyone managed to get a similar setup working onboard and if so on which port range?

I am not a techno geek and I mostly or probably totally have no idea what you're talking about (lol) BUT I do regularly use NordVPN on the ships if that helps.

Thanks, that's interesting!  I was told most commercial VPN's were blocked on cruise ships so this is good news.

I have even used my corporate VPN in the past but that has not been recently.

In order to use a vpn you must upgrade to the Premium "streaming" package.

Ah yes, this I knew.  I was hoping to use the regular package as the "premium" package is just not worth it speed wise.

I've read a bit about this in the past as well - not all cruise lines block VPN, but yes some do. I was on HAL recently and they definitely block VPN so I was unable to do any work - it was a surprise to me and I  wish I would have looked it up beforehand but now I know.

Unfortunately, the descriptions of the lesser packages do specifically state "No VPN" so they probably have some way to block it (not that I would have a clue as to how the do that lol.)

I have no problem connecting through a corporate VPN, but we always have the premium, streaming service for both VPN and wifi calling/voice.

Just a guess but if you setup PiVPN on port 443 at home, you should be able to use it on the ship, at least in theory.

I was thinking about that, I might try it just to see.  I do know that on RCCL they block VPN's thru deep packet inspection so the port doesn't matter, but RCCL's system is leaps and bounds ahead of anything on NCL ships so I'm hoping their vintage setup may be to my advantage.

Haha

  • 5 months later...

I was on NCL Sun in December 2022 and had the standard whole cruise wifi package, the premium package was not offered.

There is deep packet inspection (DPI) going on, well known VPNs like openvpn were just completely blocked on all ports, including TCP 443. It was possible to access http/https on any port, not just 80/443, which told me it had to be DPI rather than them simply blocking all ports except 80/443.

Wireguard sort of worked but was incredibly slow on multiple servers I have a wireguard server hosted on e.g. 0.05Mb/s - it was just my assumption that wireguard doesn't like high latency (NCL Sun latency was 500 - 700ms) rather than it being completely blocked.

A TCP VPN like v2ray that pretends to be normal web traffic worked perfectly as expected as it just looked like normal web traffic to the DPI firewall. I was able to max out the full 7Mb/s download and 1Mb/s upload.
