Amphibious Bus Tour in Odaiba
Tokyo prepares for a tourist influx in 2020
Japan’s tourism is all geared up for the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, as it recently launched a new amphibious tour bus to serve the expected increased numbers of foreign visitors around the big event.
“Tokyo no Kaba” or “Tokyo’s Hippo,” a 12-meter-long bus that travels both on land and in water, started its first cruises in Tokyo Bay last month.
The 45-minute route takes it around the office buildings and entertainment complexes of Odaiba, then into the water and under Rainbow Bridge that spans Tokyo Bay.
The 38-seater bus was designed by Eiji Mitooka, well-known for his designs of trains, one of which is the luxury cruise train, the “Seven Stars Kyushu”.
Tour information is offered in several languages, including English, Korean, Thai, Indonesian and Mandarin.
Tours leave from the bus terminal of Aqua City on Odaiba seven times, operating every day except Wednesdays, but may be suspended in the event of bad weather. The cost is JPY3500 for junior high school students or older, JP1700 for elementary school students or infants from 4 years old, JPY500 for infants under 4 years old.
Getting there
Aqua City is one minute from Daiba station on the Yurikamome Monorail, or six minutes' walk from Tokyo Teleport station on the Rinkai line.

- Tokyo Cheapo (繁體中文)
Is Tokyo's Hop-on Hop-off Sightseeing Bus Worth It?
We’ll make this quick: Is it worth it? Yes. If you’ve got limited time to spend in Tokyo, the Sky Hop-on Hop-off Open-top Bus is a thrilling way to see the top spots quickly and without wearing out your legs.
But if you’re looking for a detailed review — including what course to choose and spots to get off at — you’re in the right place. We’ve got a treasure trove of Cheapo tips.
How the Tokyo Sky Hop-on Hop-off Bus works
The Sky Hop-on Hop-off Sightseeing Bus is a double-decker, open-top bus that allows you to get on and off at major tourist sites around Tokyo. Once you’ve purchased a bus pass, you’ll receive a QR code which the bus attendant will scan as you enter and exit the bus. Depending on how you buy the pass, you may have to exchange your voucher for a ticket, but this can be done at any bus stop on any route. There’s no need to go to the beginning of the route to start.
To search for your closest bus stop to where you are staying, check out Sky Bus’s digital map . It also includes times and how busy the buses are. Once boarded, you’ll receive a paper map and timetable along with earbuds — you can also bring your own headphones — for the digital audio commentary. Languages include Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French, and German.
Where can I buy the pass?
The one-day pass costs ¥ 4,500 and the two-day pass costs ¥ 6,500 . You can buy tickets easily from Headout or Klook ; on the Sky Hop Bus website; or on the bus on the day.
Note: Even if you enter a specific day, unused tickets are valid for up to three months from the purchasing date.
Which course should you choose?
There are three different bus routes to take advantage of and all are accessible with just one pass. They come in the primary colors red, green, and blue, and while all three are doable in a day, if you plan to get off and on (as Sky Hop Bus intends) then you may only end up riding one or two.
All courses begin and end in front of the Mitsubishi Building near Tokyo Station , so its stand-out redbrick building is a landmark you’ll see no matter which routes you choose.
Green Course: Skyscrapers and city sights
Course length: Just under 2 hours Highlights: Shinjuku, Shibuya Scramble Crossing, and Tokyo Tower Recommended stops: Tokyo Tower and Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden
If you’re a fan of the hustle and bustle of the city and want to see the iconic skyscrapers of western Tokyo, then the Green Course is the only way to go.
You’ll set off from Mitsubishi Building and head directly towards Shinjuku; here you can get off at stops for Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden , Shinjuku Southern Terrace , and West Shinjuku. On the way, look out for the entrance to Kabukicho , known for its Godzilla and nightlife; the Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower, which looks more like a silver bullet than a cocoon; and the Tokyo Metropolitan Building , a Cheapo must-see.
Tip: As buses are infrequent on this route (every 2–3 hours), consider making your own way to/from Shinjuku and exploring the area before or after your desired course. We got on at the West Shinjuku stop and rode until the end.
Next up is Shibuya with a stop just before the famous Shibuya Scramble Crossing . The journey from Shinjuku will take you briefly past Yoyogi Park, Harajuku, and Omotesandō , although you won’t be able to see much except for the Yoyogi National Stadium . Once in Shibuya, you’ll spot — and hopefully not run over — pedestrians dashing over the busy crosswalk outside Shibuya Station. You’ll also hear the tale of Hachikō — a dog immortalized in a statue nearby.
Finished with the west side of Tokyo, the bus will make its way back towards Tokyo Station, but not before taking a break at one of the most iconic sights of the city: Tokyo Tower. (It only stops here twice a day, so make sure to check the timetable.) You can get off here and stroll through nearby Shiba Park before making your way up the tower — by stairs if you want a challenge. Get tickets for the observatory here . This is also a good opportunity to connect to the Blue Course as the timings line up nicely.
Red Course: Temples, tradition, and Tokyo Skytree
Course length: 1 hour 30 minutes Highlights: Tokyo Skytree, Sumida River, and the Kaminarimon Gate Recommended stops: Tokyo Skytree, Asakusa, and Ueno Station
The Red Course has the most stops of the three bus lines and comes the most frequently — around every hour. It also has major tourist destinations on its route with stops for Tokyo Skytree , Asakusa , Ueno , and Akihabara . Provided you start early, you can have a lot of fun hopping on and off this line.
Firstly, you’ll head towards Ryōgoku, the town known for its sumo wrestlers . If you’re lucky, you may spot one or two walking the streets here. Not long after, you’ll get to see the tallest building in Japan and the tallest tower in the world: Tokyo Skytree . Get tickets here .
If you stay on, then it’s over the bridge — notice the frothing beer and golden poop buildings to your left — as you proceed to Asakusa. Disembark for a stroll down Nakamise Street and around Sensōji Temple . You won’t be able to see the temple from the bus, only the Kaminarimon Gate and waving rickshaw drivers, so it’s worth getting off here for a closer look.
After getting your fix of old-school Tokyo, you’ll arrive at Ueno Station. Alight here for the local museums , Ueno Park , and Ameyoko Shopping Street . Honestly, there’s not much to see from the roof of the bus in the Ueno area but things get more exciting as you approach Akihabara, an electronics and sub-culture hub . See smiling anime girls greet you from the sky-high building’s fronts and watch the nerds of the city do their shopping rounds. Lastly, the route swings by the historic Nihonbashi Bridge on the way back to the Marunouchi area.
Blue Course: Night views, Rainbow Bridge, and Tokyo Tower
Course length: 1 hour 16 minutes Highlights: Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo Tower, and night view Recommended stops: Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Teleport Station
Cheapos are suckers for city lights at night — they’re free to view, after all — and the Blue Course delivers some of the best in Tokyo. As the only route that runs when the sun goes down, you’ll get to see Tokyo shine the brightest. Although just as enjoyable in the daytime, we recommend taking it at the end of the day.
Depending on the time of year, it will either be dark by the time it starts or the sun will just be setting. Heading through Marunouchi, you’ll pass by plenty of government buildings before arriving at Tokyo Tower, which turns its lights on at dusk.
Now on to the most unique experience of all: driving over the Rainbow Bridge. This bridge connects mainland Tokyo to the manmade island of Odaiba . An open-top bus is one of the only ways to experience an unobstructed view while crossing over the bay as visitors are unlikely to have a car. You can cross the bridge on foot , as well as via the Yurikamome Line, but both won’t offer you a vista like this. It’ll be extremely windy, so hold on to your hats… and phones.
Once you’ve made it over to Odaiba, there will be a stop for Tokyo Teleport Station. If you’d like to grab some lunch or dinner at one of the department stores along Odaiba Seaside Park , the restaurants there offer a beautiful view of Tokyo’s skyline and a glowing Rainbow Bridge.
You can also skip dinner and cross back over the Rainbow Bridge on the bus. This direction is even more impressive as it offers a full-frontal view of Tokyo Tower. Before finishing your day at Tokyo Station, you’ll go through Ginza and experience the glittering lights of the fanciest neighborhood in Tokyo. Here you can see the Hattori Clock Tower above the Wako Department Store, which survived the bombings of WW2; the Shinkansen overpass, where you can see bullet trains coming in and out of Tokyo Station; and Kabuki-za, the famous Kabuki theater.
Conclusion: Is the Tokyo Sky Hop-on Hop-off Bus worth it?
The bus is a perfect way to give you a sample of what Tokyo has to offer. If you use it on your first day in the city, you can get a sense of what’s worth a visit and what isn’t. It’s also comforting for those who have mobility difficulties — a peaceful alternative to rushing about one of the largest cities in the world.
Tip: If you are strapped for time and can only pick one or two routes, then we’d avoid the Green Course unless you have a lot of time or desire to see Shibuya or Shinjuku.
Tokyo Sky Hop-on Hop-off Bus FAQs
How often does the tokyo sky hop-on hop-off bus go.
Some routes (like the Red and Blue) go more often than others (Green), but even then, you could be waiting for around an hour or so for the bus to pick you up again. Though times do change depending on the season. To avoid heartache, keep the timetable handy and consider only getting off at your must-see spots. Also, start early. Buses go from around 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (until 7:20 p.m. on the Blue Course).
Do I have to get off the bus?
You don’t need to get off the bus. In fact, we recommend only getting off if you’re going to spend more than an hour in one area as the bus will not come back around again that often. Key stops to transfer to other courses are Tokyo Tower (Blue and Green) and Mitsubishi Building (all three).
Can I do all courses in one day?
If you are strategic and get up early, it is possible, but you may only be able to get off once or twice.
What is the difference between the Tokyo Sky Bus and Sky Hop Bus?
Sky Hop Bus also operates another sightseeing bus that you can’t hop on and off of. It is called Sky Bus Tokyo and includes a tour guide (Japanese only). Sky Bus also departs from outside the Mitsubishi Building and will have the blue label “Sky Bus Tokyo” on the front.
What happens if it rains?
The bus will still operate in light rain and you will be provided with ponchos. Some buses also come with a rain cover attached. However, the bus may be suspended in heavy rain and stormy weather.
What types of seats and buses are there?
Buses will have a small roof at the front for those who need shade, and on some of the newer buses, these seats even have air-conditioning (a blessing for Japan’s summers ).
What if the bus is full?
Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait for the next one as you are not allowed to stand on the bus. You can check the status of buses on the map mentioned before. This is one of the benefits of getting on at the Mitsubishi Building (the first stop).
Which is better, the train or bus?
You may be wondering if it is worth catching a sightseeing bus when Tokyo’s train system is one of the best in the world. While it is not as cheap as the train can be, the bus can be a lot quicker — traffic permitting — and offers you views on the way. There are no transfers that will slow you down and you get to see major destinations without the fuss of getting off — just be ready with your camera.
Final tip: Bring a brush. You’re going to need it to untangle your windswept hair.
While we do our best to ensure it’s correct, information is subject to change.

Get Around Tokyo Odaiba For Free with Tokyo Bay Shuttle!
Odaiba , located in the Rinkai Fukutoshin area on Tokyo's east side, is a famous town with plenty of leisure facilities and sightseeing spots that has been gaining rapid fame among foreign visitors in recent years. Did you know that there's a bus service that brings passengers to places of interest scattered all around Odaiba free of charge? Tokyo Bay Shuttle is the name you need to remember when making transportation plans for Odaiba , and we're going to tell you why!
What Is the Tokyo Bay Shuttle?
Stations, route durations, and peak periods, 1. national museum of emerging science and innovation (miraikan), 2. fuji television wangan studio, 3. venusfort (palette town), 4. tokyo teleport station, 5. divercity tokyo plaza, get up to 10% off, 6. hilton tokyo odaiba, 7. aqua city odaiba, 8. decks tokyo beach, 9. fuji television, 10. grand nikko tokyo daiba, 11. aomi rinkai parking lot, tokyo bay shuttle: fully equipped to welcome foreign visitors.
This is a shuttle bus service operated by Hinomaru Jidousya Kougyo Co. Ltd. that connects to major sightseeing spots in Odaiba . One of the objectives of Odaiba 's redevelopment during the late-1990s was to reduce the traffic volume of personal vehicles in commercialized territories, and this bus service was launched in the year 2000 to that end. It played a major part as a pioneer in driving Odaiba 's Park & Ride initiative, which is now the transportation standard for the area.
Also, through close collaboration with Odaiba 's local businesses and shopping malls in Palette Town, such as VenusFort and Aqua City Odaiba , the bus is free to ride for everyone. In exchange, these partners broadcast sightseeing advertisements on the two monitors in the bus or install floor guides and other useful information about their businesses in the section located just behind the driver's seat that's designed for guidebooks and such. This has a good effect on developing and promoting synergy between local businesses.
The bus interior itself is built similarly to municipal buses. Besides the foldable ramps that make the vehicle wheelchair-accessible, seats are located virtually in the same positions as regular buses as well. The main differences would be the section for guidebooks found at the front of the bus and a wider space for wheelchairs and baby strollers. It's clear from these little details that the operator takes into consideration the ease and comfort of passengers from all walks of life.
The Tokyo Bay Shuttle will stop at a total of 11 stations, starting from the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) and going all the way to Aomi Rinkai Parking Lot. This route is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) long. The bus then turns around and goes back to Miraikan, taking about 40 minutes to complete one circuit. Every day, between 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., one bus departs from the starting point every 20 minutes or so. The bus is in operation every day, no matter the season , and even on major holidays during the end or start of the year. During summertime (between July to August), the bus often sees more than double its usual passenger traffic. Let's hop on the bus now to visit individual bus stops and the places of interest located near them!
Miraikan is a museum where you can personally experience what the latest science and technology has to offer. There are no other sightseeing spots around this stop. Opposite the Miraikan are official buildings like the Tokyo International Exchange Center and Tokyo Wangan Police Station.

What sort of services does the Tokyo Bay Shuttle bus provide for international tourists, in view of the exponential growth in foreign visitors in recent years? We asked Mr. Hirai from the business division of Hinomaru Jidousya Kougyo Co. Ltd. for his opinion and here's what we found out. Apparently, the majority of Bay Shuttle passengers are actually foreign tourists! In order to make the ride more comfortable for them, the company has installed a guidebook space behind the driver's seat and filled the space up with English-labeled route maps. A larger version of this route map is also put up inside the bus itself for easy reference. Such details may seem minor, but they add to the comfort and accessibility of the bus service, especially for foreign visitors who do not speak or read Japanese.
These route maps also come with a QR code that brings you to a page where you can download the Bay Shuttle app. This app comes with Japanese, English, Korean, and Chinese language support. The app has a complete list of all bus stops along with bus timing schedules and information about major places of interest located near individual stops. Also, users of the app can get real-time updates about bus operations and traffic conditions. We certainly highly recommend installing the app for the sheer convenience it provides! Near the bus door, useful signs about bus stops that are not currently in operation are also indicated in English, Korean, and Chinese, a testament to the company's dedication to providing a seamless experience to passengers from all countries.
Tokyo Bay Shuttle achieved an accumulated ridership of over 10 million in the year 2017. Unlike trains and monorails, passengers can admire the scenery outside the window while sitting in the comfort of an air-conditioned bus. The best part of it all is that the shuttle bus is free of charge, allowing you to hop on and off as many times as you like without needing to worry about spare change or going out of budget. In fact, according to Mr. Hirai, this is one of the most appealing parts of the service! This writer sat on the bus for the entire route just to give it a go, and can vouch for the excellent positions of the bus stops relative to where the major places of interest in Odaiba are. Tokyo Bay Shuttle is an invaluable resource for tourists looking for a reliable mode of transportation around Odaiba . The view of the waterfront scenery at night from the bus window is quite a sight to behold as well. Passengers without a particular destination in mind can also choose to simply sit on the bus throughout the route to enjoy the scenery as well, for a different but equally pleasant kind of sightseeing experience!

Gundam stands guard over oceanside entertainment and shopping facilities
With all its technology centers, shopping malls and array of entertainment options, Odaiba may sound much like Shinjuku, Shibuya or any of Tokyo's other neon-lit core districts, but its singular seaside location gives it a much more relaxed holiday vibe. For shopping, choose from AQUA CiTY , DiverCity or Decks . Anime fans can find Odaiba's life-sized UNICORN GUNDAM Statue outside DiverCity Tokyo Plaza. See it transform during four daily shows, and visit the nearby Gundam cafe and Gundam Base shop. The indoor amusement parks Tokyo Joypolis and Legoland Discovery Center Tokyo , located in DECKS Tokyo Beach, are great options if you get caught in the rain—or even if the sun is shining—and the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation , known as Miraikan, is a big lens on the future.

Tokyo's most iconic bridge
The Rainbow Bridge arches over Tokyo Bay, linking Odaiba with the rest of Tokyo. At night, the multicolored lights of the bridge set against the glowing Tokyo skyline look like something from the movie Blade Runner. View the bridge over a cocktail from a trendy bar or take a mini-cruise and dine on the water. You can also walk the bridge, but expect it to take a good 30 minutes. For a less strenuous perspective of the bridge, hop on the Yurikamome sky train. Odaiba’s replica of the famous Statue of Liberty is located in front of the Rainbow Bridge. Originally erected in 1998 as a temporary tribute to Japan’s relationship with France, the statue became so popular she was made a permanent feature in 2000.
On and around the waterfront—Tokyo's canals
Get a different panorama of the capital's many sites from the water. Head to the pier at Odaiba Marine Park and board one of the slick, glass-paned water buses that will ferry you over to Hinode Pier or to retro-chic Asakusa. From the water, you can take in Odaiba's architecturally intrepid statements of creative modernity. The Fuji TV Building is particularly impressive.

One dead, 11 others injured after shuttle bus plows into group near Honolulu cruise port
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - One person is dead and 11 others were injured Friday when a shuttle bus driver dropping off passengers near a Honolulu cruise ship terminal hit the gas instead of the brake, pinning several people against concrete barriers, first responders said.
Honolulu EMS said a 68-year-old woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition, and police traffic investigators confirmed she later died. There were four others who were seriously injured: A 67-year-old man, a 67-year-old woman, a 55-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man.
The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii said the woman who died and the four others who were seriously injured are from Illinois, and that they are being offered assistance.
Additionally, a man in his 70s was taken to the hospital in stable condition while six other adults, ranging in age from their 40s to their 70s, suffered minor injures and declined transport.
Multiple EMS units with paramedics and EMTs responded to the scene at Pier 2 about 10:20 a.m.
Honolulu police said the incident happened in a private parking lot when a 57-year-old driver dropping people off and picking others up was notified that his vehicle was moving forward. He jumped into the driver’s seat to stop it, but pressed the gas pedal instead of the brakes.
Florida ER nurse Janet Lightfoot, on a cruise with her mom, jumped into action to help.
The two had just disembarked Friday morning and were waiting for a shuttle to go shopping when they saw a bus with a Hilo Hatties logo heading toward a crowd of people.

Taunton non-profit takes over 40 students on city's first HBCU tour
by TEMI-TOPE ADELEYE, NBC 10 NEWS
The Taunton Diversity Network formed a Historically Black Colleges and Universities tour for more than 40 local high school students. (WJAR)
TAUNTON, Mass. (WJAR) — Some Taunton High School students are going on a tour that could change the course of their lives.
The Taunton Diversity Network formed a Historically Black Colleges and Universities tour for more than 40 local high school students.
The trip is believed to be the first of its kind in the Southeast Massachusetts region.
Gordon School in East Providence has a similar "Civil Rights Trip" for eighth-graders that started 22 years ago.
Their trip will take place next Monday.
Taunton Diversity Network is a BIPOC-centered, non-profit that educates, advocates and hosts events regarding social justice, diversity and inclusion, among other topics.
President and CEO April Funches said they hope the students learn a lot from the tour, including the struggles that African Americans dealt with in the U.S.
"I'm also hoping that they experience the Black College experience. I'm hoping they get to see a little bit of the Greek life happening on the campuses," said Funches. "I'm really hoping that maybe they'll find a college home and if they don't that's okay, at least they can say they explored this option."
Taunton High School sophomore Olive Nyomo said the trip comprises Taunton High School and Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School students.
Nyomo said she is excited to be a "guinea pig" in this introductory tour.
"Most of my life I've been in Taunton," said Nyomo. "So, this is really like my first time going out there and exploring the world."
Students of all backgrounds checked in before their loved ones escorted them to the bus.
"We're going to Jackson State, Tuskegee, FAMU [Florida A&M University], Spelman, Morehouse, Johnson C. Smith, Howard, and Hampton," said Funches. "So it's going to be quite the journey but we're looking forward to it."

Taunton High School sophomore Nathan Pascal said he is going into the tour with an open mind.
"[I hope to take away] just more knowledge about how everything really works out there, and just realizing what they offer me. and how I can apply it to my own life in the future," said Pascal.
Funches said their organization began planning the nine-day tour last October, raising funds, and partnering with several groups to bring this mission to life.
The city of Taunton paid for half of the $130,000 trip.
Mayor Shaunna O'Connell said they did not give it a second thought.
"It's just so important to give opportunity to these kids that they really never would have had, to explore colleges and really figure out their path in life," said O'Connell.
Family, friends and faculty prayed before sending off their students.
Organizers said they hope to bring the tour back in two years for a new group of students.
