P&o britannia single inside cabin review.

Discover what the solo inside cabins are like on P&O Cruise’s Britannia as I share my experience of staying in one on a UK mini cruise .

I’ve always thought that if I took a cruise I’d have to have a balcony cabin. Like many people, the thought of an staying in an inside cabin with no natural day light was not something that appealed.

However, when P&O put on their UK staycation cruises in 2021 and I saw what good price they had for solo travellers I decided to put all my preconceptions to one side and try out a single inside cabin.

I chose a three night voyage along the south coast of the UK on Britannia. My thinking was, I could survive three nights if I didn’t like it.

Turned out it was no where near as bad I as feared. Before the cruise I did a little bit of research to see what other people were saying. Although there are plenty of P&O Britannia cabin reviews on the internet and social media I couldn’t find many on the single cabins

In this post, I share my experience of cruising in one of these cabin to hopefully help you decide if they are are for you.

At A Glance: Britannia Single Cabins

  • Ideal cabins for the solo cruiser
  • Fairly spacious (more than enough for one person unless you want to throw a party)
  • Modern decor
  • Plenty of storage for one
  • Good size bathrooms
  • Great location on ship

How big are the solo inside cabins on Britannia?

134 sq ft – sleeps one (obviously!)

One of my main concerns about staying in a single inside cabin is that it would be small, a bit dark and dingy and probably a bit claustrophobic.

My worries were completely unfounded. The cabins were much more spacious that I anticipated. In fact they were the perfect size for a solo cruiser.

Cabin Review

Cabin Layout

The cabins have a modern design and decor. A little bland maybe, but comfortable and relaxing.

The bed, which is somewhere between a single and double size wise, was pushed up against the wall. This left enough space in the centre of the room to make the cabin feel more spacious than you might expect.

There was a dressing table at the end of the cabin with a small mirror and the all important tea making facilities. P&O Cruises definitely know the importance of a cuppa and there was plenty of teabags and coffee sachets.

Along the wall opposite to the bed there was a good sized wardrobe with plenty of hanging space and shelves for the solo traveller (and trust me, I don’t usually pack light).

Next to the wardrobe there was a flat screen TV on the wall. Here you could watch the muster drill which is shown in cabins when you board.

The bathroom was a good size with plenty of space to storage toiletries and make up. The complimentary toiletries – shower gel and shampoo – are from The White Company.

Location of the single cabins on Britannia

Deck 16 – the Lido deck

P&O have played a masterstroke by having all the single cabins along one corridor on deck 16, the Lido deck. The location is perfect for the solo traveller.

Deck 16 is probably the best deck on Britannia. Everything is within easy reach. You could be by the pool or in the hot tub within a few minutes.

The lifts, giving access to the rest of the ship, are at one end of the corridor and at the other there was ‘secret’ entrance to the Crows Nest bar at the front of the ship.

This set up gives the area an almost exclusive feel. A nice touch given that solo travellers are often the last thought about.

p&o cruise single cabin

Perhaps best of all, Horizon, the buffet, was just a short walk past the pool. Very handy for bringing a drink or late night snack (and cuppa) back to your cabin.

Meeting other solo travellers

While I’m used to travelling on my own, I was hoping for a bit of company on the cruise and was curious to see how easy it would be to meet people on board or if I’d have to spend most of my time alone.

I shouldn’t have worried, P&O have thought of that. On sea days there was a solo coffee meet up each morning in the Crows Nest Bar.

Hosted by one of the P&O team the meet up was an opportunity to catch up and get to know other solo cruisers over a tea or coffee. You could stay as long or as short as you liked and there was no pressure to chat.

Advantages of a solo inside cabin

There are many advantages when taking an inside cabin, including some you may not have thought of.

With no natural daylight, you don’t have to worry about being woken up by the sunrise. In fact, you’ll probably get a great night’s sleep as it’s so dark.

You’ll be more motivated to get out and about exploring the ship and all the facilities on offer.

However, the biggest advantage is the cost saving you’ll make. Inside cabins are usually a lot cheaper than those with a balcony and with the single cabins you can avoid the dreaded solo supplement.

Tip: It can sometimes be cheaper to book a standard cabin at solo occupancy so it pays to have a quick look at all the possible options before booking.

The Last Word

A short cruise is a good way to try an inside cabin before committing to a longer cruise and finding out that type of cabin is not for you. Or even that a cruise isn’t for you.

Having spent a few nights onboard I wouldn’t hesitate to book an inside cabin again in the future. I think they are some of best cabins on Britannia. Inside cabins get bit of a rough deal really but that was not my experience at all.

The location of them on Britannia is ideal, they are comfortable and have everything you need for a great solo trip.

There is so much to do on the ship that I was hardly in the cabin. I really only used it to sleep and get changed for the evening.

So if you were thinking these might be some of the cabins to avoid on Britannia , think again.

You can always find a quiet spot if you want to sit and enjoy the sea views so I didn’t miss not having a balcony as much as I thought I would.

P&O have done such a great job with their single cabins that you don’t feel you are missing out.

That said, if a balcony cabin was in similar price range I’d probably book that but the price difference can be significant.

So it may be a question of weighing up how much you want a balcony cabin or whether it would be better to put the money you save by taking an solo inside cabin towards your next cruise!

Hi I’m tagging onto my friends cruise as I’m not brave enough to go on my own. However , as they are all paired up I was thinking of booking a solo cabin. Not sure what to do yet as I’ve always imagined booking a balcony cabin. It all depends on the price difference

' src=

Hi Elizabeth, I always imagined booking a balcony cabin too but ended up booking inside cabins more often not. They aren’t usually as bad as you might think, plus the money saved can be put towards another cruise! You can always find a spot round the ship to watch the waves and take in the views. If you are cruising on Britannia they do some nice solo balcony cabins too. I’d definitely be keen to try those next time. Or if you are travelling with friends, maybe you can use their balcony for the odd cuppa or drink so you get experience it a bit. Emma

So looking forward to my first solo cruise to the Caribbean mid March.happy to hear there are solo get-together meets. Very excited and so looking forward to it…and your holiday is what you make it yourself. Happy cruising to all the other solo,s.

Hi Debra, thanks for the comment. Agree, a cruise is definitely what you make of it. Things are never that bad, after all you are on a cruise :o) Yes, P&O are great for the solo meet ups. Make sure you pop along, it’s a great way to meet people. I’m still friends with people I met at the meetings on Britannia and Iona. Enjoy your cruise.

My wife died last early year after a long illness with cancer. She always insisted I must still try to travel, and meet other people, before she passed away. Until last week, when I took the plunge on a Britannia solo cabin, for a Caribbean cruise Mid-march, I had accepted I might not be brave enough to do anything. Your review has gone some way to putting my mind at rest – thank you.

Hi Michael, thanks for your comment. Sorry to hear about your wife, she sounds a wonderful lady. Hope you are doing ok. I’m recovering from cancer myself, so understand how awful it is. I’ve found travel to be a real help getting back on my feet. Cruising on Britannia was my first solo trip after cancer treatment. I was quite nervous but once onboard it was all fine. Just go with an open mind. And if you find this ship isn’t for you, don’t be put off trying another. Both cruise lines and ships are all so different so they’ll be one for you out there. Don’t forget to go to the solo meet up on the first sea day too. It is a great way to meet people. Enjoy your cruise. Emma

Thanks for the great cabin summary! I’ve sailed solo a few times with P&O, although I’ve never stayed in a single cabin before. But I’ve just booked a two week trip on Britannia in a single and was hoping to find a good description of the room outside of the generic paragraph on the P&O website, and this is just what I was hoping for!

Hi Rob, thanks for the kind comment. I loved my solo inside cabin, would not hesitate to book one again. I’ve got a solo balcony on Britannia next year so am interested to see how that will be. They look great too so hoping it’s great too. Enjoy your cruise.

P&O Britannia Cabins (Tour & Review 2019)

In this post, I will be discussing all cabin grades available onboard Britannia and sharing a review of the balcony cabin that I enjoyed during my week cruise around the Norwegian Fjords. In this post we will cover:

Inside cabins

  • Inside solo cabins

Balcony cabins

  • Balcony solo cabins
  • Superior deluxe balcony cabins

p&o britannia balcony cabin reviews review woman sat on bed with inflatable cruise ship

Sleeps up to: 4

Anybody who knows me knows that I am a lover of inside cabins. I love the price, of course, but also love the amazing night’s sleep that it provides. When I stay in an inside cabin I am more likely to get out and about to explore the ship which is an added bonus.

Inside cabins Britannia’s boutique style cabins feature a large flat screen TV for films on demand, pamper packs from The White Company, bathrooms with glass shower screens and bespoke artworks from British artists.

How big are the inside cabins on Britannia?

The inside cabins range from 137 – 181 feet which is pretty standard. The bed is two single beds which push together to make a queen. It is totally up to you how you have this. On a couple of occasions, I have been cruising with my brother and arrived to find the beds pushed together. If this happens to you, don’t worry! Just let your room steward know and they’ll be happy to change it for you.

P&O Cruises: Britannia

How many people can fit in the inside cabins on Britannia?

The inside cabins can take four adults although I would urge you to think before booking this. It may be the best option but can be very cramped. I have done it in the past but wouldn’t recommend it for a long period of time. The below video was filmed onboard Royal Caribbeans Independence of the Seas and should give you an idea of how 3/4 adults can share a cabin.

It is worth noting that P&O will not push the two bottom beds together when there are guests staying above. Not sure why this is the case. Below shows the pullmen beds in the ceiling.

inside cabin britannia pullman beds 4 sharing twin beds ceiling

What is included in the cabin? (Included in all cabin grades)

All cabins come with the following as standard:

  • Tea and Coffee making facilities
  • Air conditioning
  • Toiletries (shampoo, conditioner and moisturiser).

Solo inside cabin

Sleeps up to: 1

P&O do offer solo inside cabins. These allow solo cruisers to have their own space and it is USUALLY cheaper than paying the dreaded ‘solo supplement’. I really like the look of these solo cabins although P&O do not have a solo ‘lounge’ or any other solo space. That said I really don’t think that you would need it. I was amazed by how friendly and polite all the guests onboard were. Everybody chatted and got along, I even made a few friends onboard!

The guests onboard were so lovely that I even suggested table sharing in my ‘ 8 free ‘must do’ activities onboard Britannia ‘ post. Table sharing is something that I very rarely do but it was such a positive experience.

inside cabin solo britannia single

I am usually an inside cabin cruiser but was lucky enough to have a balcony cabin onboard Britannia. I am so glad that we did. The Norwegian Fjords are stunning and I wouldn’t want to miss a second. We even took our duvets onto the balcony one afternoon to watch the sail aways. Below is me enjoying the cabin with my inflatable Britannia!

The styling inside the cabin is exactly the same as the inside cabin. It is worth noting that some balcony cabins have a sofa/couch where as ours just had a chair.

p&o britannia balcony cabin reviews review woman sat on bed with inflatable cruise ship

How big is the standard balcony on Britannia?

The balcony is more than big enough. I’ve heard a lot of people complaining about the size of the balcony but I never had any issues with it. I would say that for one or two people the size is more than adequate. If 3 or 4 people wanted to go on the balcony at the same time it would be a bit of a struggle. Not impossible but you’d have to stand very close together.

It’s also worth noting that some balconies are bigger. We had the standard balcony cabin on deck 11, F111. As you can see in this picture the balconies on the deck below were much bigger. We were right at the front of the ship.

p&o britannia balcony size small big review reviews sun on balcony chair

What is in the Balcony cabins onboard Britannia?

  • Twin/Queen beds
  • A desk with mirror + chair
  • Another chair or a sofa
  • Table (perfect for putting your room service on)
  • Bedside tables
  • Tea + Coffee making facilities

My review of the Balcony cabin F111.

I liked the cabin and can’t really find anything to fault with it. I particularly liked the separate area by the wardrobes for changing. The bathroom was pretty small, probably one of the smallest I’ve had on a ship but this wasn’t a problem at all. Cruise ship bathrooms are organised so well that everything has it’s place. The shower was actually pretty big and had a door instead of a curtain which I liked.

While onboard I filmed a video about all the little things that I loved about Britannia. In the video you’ll see the tea and coffee making facilities plus a little of the cabin.

Solo balcony cabins

As far as I know, P&O are the only cruise line to have solo balcony cabins. Please let me know in the comments if this is incorrect!

Each cabin has a single bed, the same bathroom as the bigger balconies and a balcony that is also of the same size. The decor is the same as all of the other cabins onboard. The balcony has two seats on it which I like, this means that you can bring a friend back to your cabin.

p&o britannia solo balcony cabin

Superior deluxe balcony

Another option is a super deluxe balcony cabin. These are basically slightly bigger versions of the standard balcony cabin with a few extras.

Perfect for us as a family of 4 travelling with an 8 & 2 year old. Plenty of space, sofabed pulls out into a double bed. Curtain pulls across to separate the two sleeping areas. Large flat screen TVs in both areas. A nice sized bathroom with bath and shower over. Only real negative is once the sofabed is pulled out (around 6.30pm) and made up, you can’t access the minibar fridge or the dressing area at all as the bed is right up against it. The sofa is easily pushed away though   – Kerry

What is the difference between a standard balcony and a super deluxe balcony?

  • Extra space. The main difference is that the deluxe balcony is bigger than the standard balcony.
  • Seating area – Deluxe balconies have a seating area with sofa whereas the standard balcony cabin only has a couple of chairs and a desk.
  • Baths! The deluxe balconies have a bath. This one would be very tempting for me because I LOVE a bath. I’ve never had one on a cruise ship though.

Accessible cabins

P&O have 37 accessible cabins which have wider doorways, bigger bathrooms and generally more space. My gran has cruised on Britannia and was really impressed with the size of her accessible cabin. These are available on a first come first serve basis so if you need one make sure you book early.

Suites (Premium suites, Owners suites & Penthouse suite)

Sleeps up to: 3

There are a number of suites available onboard Britannia.

The ultimate in luxury, our butler-serviced Suites offer the extra space of a lounge area (perfect for entertaining), a superior bathroom, dressing area and a broad balcony so you can take in the sights, or simply soak up the warmth of the sun in complete privacy. Choose to stay in a Suite and you’ll also be treated to some special touches.

p&o britannia suite cabin

Britannia doesn’t have any family suites, unlike Azura and Ventura.

All suites include:

  • Butler service (included but optional)
  • Daily canapes
  • Fruit basket
  • Mineral water (on arrival)
  • Whirlpool bath

Types of suites

There are three types of suites. Penthouse, Owners and Premium. The Penthouse suites are the smallest. Owners suites are slightly bigger and then Premium suites are the biggest.

p&o britannia suite cabin lounge

What plug sockets are on Britannia?

All cabins have UK plug sockets! Woohoo. There is one shaver socket in the bathroom and 5 other sockets in the rest of the cabin. Some UK and some US.

Other things to note:

  • Britannia has NO oceanview or porthole cabins. At all! That’s one less option to consider I suppose.
  • Britannia is the sister ship of Royal Princess. The cabins are pretty much the same but just decorated differently.
  • There are 64 suites. 460 inside cabins. 27 solo cabins.

You asked about solo balconies - RCL offers something called 'Super Studio Ocean View with Balcony'. They can sleep two, but are smaller than standard rooms and intended for solo guests.

Cool Cruiser

After many years of travelling with my son I have decided that it is time to venture off on my own. Having been widowed ten years ago I am used to doing things myself but I also know that there are really friendly people on cruises to chat too.

Has anyone got any good recommendations of single Cabins across the fleet then when 2019 itineries are published I can see what's available.

Many thanks:)

I met an American who was from the cruise industry press while on Britannia. He said the Britannia single, inside and balcony cabins were the best he had come across on any cruise line. Only downside is that if you do not click "no upgrades" you may well end up upgraded to a normal cabin. I found that we were the only cabins on the top deck, no twins and we were allocated the "Bay Tree" bottom deck on the stern. A pleasant table with only solo cruisers on it, an indicator to many that you need to specify "Club Dining" first or second sitting.

Regards John

You will probably find that booking a normal double cabin for single occupancy is not a lot more expensive than booking a single with the choice of hundreds of cabins, all with a lot of extra space.

I have had single cabins on Britannia and Ventura. The Britannia one was good but the Ventura ones were awful. There were so many creaking and squeaking noises from the walls and ceiling I found it impossible to sleep. They moved me to a single outside without argument. It was better but still IMO unfit for purpose. On Ventura I would now choose an ocean view double.

I had one of the single cabins on Arcadia, same floor as the Crows nest - became my venue of choice! It was on an itinerary to Iceland, so not an issue, but there was a sunbathing space above - so it may be a very different experience on a warm cruise. The cabin was really big.

I agree with dave Don't assume that a single cabin will be the cheapest option on all lines. P&O normally have a 60% single supplement and Cunard 75%, both on cabins up to and including balconies. Once you get to the final saver fares - around 3 months before departure, the single supplement goes up to 100%.

I've just returned from a cruise on Britannia in one of her single balcony cabins. It was my first cruise so nothing to compare against but in general I couldn't fault the cabin - small but perfectly formed and an ideal size for me. If I were a 6ft tall man then I might have found it a little snug but for a short middle-aged woman it was spot on :)

I was in L253 - Deck 16, very close to the lifts, stairwell etc and very handy for the buffet and Crow's Nest - and the only note of caution I would sound would be to consider taking a cabin further down the row. They cleaned the stairwell around 05:20 each morning - it meant I got to see a lot of dawns! (I get up 05:15 for work every day so am used to it but hey, it would have been nice to be able to sleep through occasionally.)

I've always thought that the single cabins would be quite small, but by the sounds of it that's not the case.

Or is it just a matter of what ship its on? ie. Britnannia being newer, she has larger single cabins.

The single cabins I've had on Aurora have been a good size. ISTR that the floor area for each category of cabin is given somewhere in the brochure and/or the web site.

Mrs Tinkywinky

Has anyone left it til the last minute , say 2-3 weeks before , to book a single and would they be more likely to give you a double for the same price?

I suppose it would depend on how sales were going on each cruise? I am more of a last minute booker than a long way in advance.

I did get a balcony cabin on Arcadia in June for a Baltic cruise at the late saver rate with no single supplement one week before departure. Wasn't advertised, I just did a check on the P&O website and made a dummy booking. Pure luck and the only time I've seen it. £999 for 14 nights:)

5,000+ Club

Apart from Azura & Ventura, the single cabins are all in some of the least desirable locations - extreme forward or aft and in Arcadia & Britannia's case very high up the ship as well. The only good thing about Oriana's two (yes, just two) single cabins is that have pretty immediate access to the aft deck with seating and the Terrace Pool & Jacuzzi.
Aurora's four single cabins are all right at the bow but, being a good sailor, I rather like that. It means that they are quiet and, when coming into or leaving port, it means that you are guaranteed good views regardless of whether the land is to port or starboard. In does mean quite a long walk to the Alexandria dining room, though, but at least it keeps me fit!

That is really good. A friend and I were on that cruise and paid for a restricted view twin cabin £1,600 each. I may well try a very late deal like that. Cannot get OH to go on a cruise but would book a solo one if I really wanted to go.:D

I had a single-occupancy cabin on Aurora, and it was my favorite cabin in all of my 20-something cruises. I loved the forward-facing window, the settee, and I found the location to be quite all right as the ship isn't that big.

That said, the cabin was right below the bridge, and an alarm sounded intermittently and persistently throughout the cruise. Even in the middle of the night. BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP. Stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp. Beep, boop. Stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp. I don't know what the system was, or why the guy who acknowledged the alarm wasn't stationed closer to it, but I managed to not let it bother me too much.

That's probably the system which makes sure someone is awake on the bridge all night ;p

Was your cabin one of the two on C deck? Mine was one of the two on A deck, and so I think above rather than below the bridge. At any rate I didn't hear any beeps or stomping.

The cabin (A103) was on A-deck. The bridge is just above on the Lido deck. C-deck has cabins above it.

Thankyou everyone for all your replies and suggestions. Now it's just a case of waiting for the new itineries to be released.:)

  • 2 weeks later...
I've just come off the Azura and had a single cabin on F deck. I had chosen a late saver fare rather than select as there was a tremendous jump in price for select. I don't know if I am correct in thinking that if I had gone with select I would have been able to have a double for single occupancy (from doing a dummy booking this seemed to be the case). So the price would have reflected a larger cabin not just the select aspect of it. I was allocated an actual single cabin and was really worried beforehand as it was right next to the casino and the bar. I had visions of the sound of slot machines all night! I needn't have worried - I didn't hear a thing. The sound-proofing must have been really good. Also it was a perfectly decent size for one person with plenty of storage and the bed was larger than single. It was right near the lifts and the atrium and I felt a very good location.

I'm booked on Azura for the October TA - F308. Does this cabin ring a bell?

Hi JoJoA I'm booked on Azura for the October TA - F308. Does this cabin ring a bell? Cheers Mel

I was in F314 - an inside cabin. Don't know the logic of their numbering system but looking at the plan yours looks next door! When you are in the atrium it just looks like another corridor so you don't have to go into the casino at all. People would only really go through this corridor if they had a cabin there so no passing traffic. However on my cruise (and assume it will be the same on yours) they used the gangway next to the door to the corridor for disembarking at ports and blocked that entrance to the corridor. But it was no problem at all because there is a door at the other end of the corridor (which opens onto the lifts, theatre and another entrance to the casino, all very convenient) so you just nip through there!

Have a lovely time!

Many thanks. That's very useful info. It definitely makes my mind a little easier. I was very happy with the mid forward position and the lower deck, remembering the old saying "The more you pay, the more you sway". Now, I much more relaxed about any possible Casino and thoroughfare issues.

You're right 314 is next door to 308. So, obviously, I trust it will be as good an experience as you enjoyed. As there's not too much disembarking on a Transatlantic I don't think disembarking will be an issue! Also with the current devastation at Barbuda and St Martin, I'm not sure the ship will do it's St Martin disembarking - it doesn't seem appropriate to visit these places when they must still be doing disaster recovery.

Many thanks again, and happy cruising to you.

Best wishes

Oops! I only realised after posting that TA meant Transatlantic - I'm not a very experienced cruiser!

Yes was very sorry to see the devastation that is being suffered.

cruisefan2012

I`ve had Azura Cabin F508 - Its a great cabin - I wouldnt hesitate to book it again to be honest !!

My dining companions on that cruise wanted to see each others cabin and I showed a couple of them what my cabin was like and they commented on the space in F508

You can hear high heels on the tiled floor in the casino but no didnt bother me - I had the cabin for a week when I went to the Norwegian Fjords (beautiful) !!

I really loved the spacious open wardrobe area (which the single outside cabins have aswell )

I would book both single inside and single outside again in a heart beat on Azura - I`ve also had a single balcony cabin on Britannia which I loved aswell

The single cabins corridor between the outside/inside cabins has ends which look very anonymous and virtually 99% of through traffic will go through the casino and not the non-advertised corridor.

Britannia's Single Inside Cabins

Cool Cruiser

I am considering an April cruise on the Britannia as a solo passenger.  All the single balcony cabins are booked, but there are inside solo cabins available.  Since these cabins are on the higher Lido deck and forward, I was wondering how much movement to expect, particularly as this cruise involves the Bay of Biscay, which is known for being "bumpy."  Also these cabins are along a corridor leading from the pool deck to the Crow's Nest and under the Serenity Pool deck--it noise much of an issue, particularly at night?

All the single cabins on Britannia are in the same corridor. I've been in an balcony cabin. I experienced no extra noise or disturbance from it's position. The main door for the Crow's Nest is at the centre of the ship, It's only a thoroughfare for the library which is at the end of the corridor.

I didn't experience any undue movement either.

catperson02

My daughter stayed in one of these for our cruise in August. It was very quiet and she heard no noise from above or from the corridor. She is no early riser and reported no noise whatsoever during the night or mornings to wake her up. She did feel a bit more movement than we did in our midships C deck cabin but it did not affect her and she is a bit of a vomit comet if it gets lumpy and it was a bit of a rough transit of the Bay of Biscay with the vomit bags put out on all the stairwells! The cabin was lovely - really spacious with a 3/4 double sized bed so bigger than a normal single bed. We would not hesitate to book one again.

Thanks to both of you for input.  Sounds like cabins are a good option.
