Clad in white marble, the beautiful and absolutely mammoth Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is Abu Dhabi's landmark building and by far the most popular sightseeing attraction in the city.

The mosque fuses Mameluke, Ottoman, and Fatimid design elements to create a harmonious and thoroughly modern mosque that celebrates Islamic architecture.

Artisans used glasswork, mosaic tiling, and intricate carvings to spectacular effect on both the interior and exterior.

It was opened in 2007 after nearly 20 years of construction. Able to hold 40,000 worshippers, it is the biggest mosque in the United Arab Emirates, and like the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Fujairah (the UAE's second biggest mosque), it is dedicated to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan.

The Middle East's most spectacular museum, Louvre Abu Dhabi traces the entire history of humanity's artistic achievements, from the Neolithic right up to the current day.

The wealth and diversity of art on display, from ancient Egyptian statuary to famous paintings by Picasso, is mind-boggling, while the museum's contemporary architecture, with its galleries gathered under a vast silver dome, is a reason to visit in itself.

The Louvre is the first of three planned major museums to open on Saadiyat Island, which is set to become the cultural heartbeat of Abu Dhabi in the coming years.

To see a different side of Abu Dhabi's steel and glass exterior, head into the mangrove forests that still ring the islands along the shore surrounding the city.

Saadiyat Island is one of Abu Dhabi's top sun-seeker destinations.

Saadiyat Beach is a long strip of white sand on the island's western shore, with a small admission fee for beachgoers. It has excellent facilities, including on-duty lifeguards, a café for refreshments, and plenty of sun loungers and shades.

For active sun-seekers, you can rent kayaks and windsurfing equipment on the beach.

The beach is backed by a rim of protected dunes where hawksbill turtles nest. Access to the beach is on a raised wooden boardwalk so that this area is not disturbed.

If you want a more luxurious day on the sand, head farther north along Saadiyat Island's coast to the private Saadiyat Beach Club. A day pass grants you access to this exclusive beach strip with all its facilities, including a pool, restaurants, and various lounge areas.

Recently opened to the public, Qasr Al Watan (the UAE's Presidential Palace) has quickly become a must-do on Abu Dhabi itineraries for anyone interested in digging deeper into the culture, history, and architecture of the UAE.

The grandiose interiors of the state rooms, including the Great Hall and Presidential Banqueting Hall, with their crystal chandeliers, domes, arches, vast amounts of marble, and intricate mosaic and muqarna (ornamental vaulting) detailing, is enough of a reason to visit.

This branded theme park brings the thrill of Formula One racing to Abu Dhabi and is one of the city's top things to do for adrenaline seekers and families alike.

Small children can test out newly learned driving skills on the Junior GT track, while speed junkies can buckle up and ride the Flying Aces roller coaster, which clocks up speeds of 120 kilometers per hour on a 52-meter loop (the tallest in the world).

For the best views of Abu Dhabi's glittering skyscrapers, you need to head out onto the water. The views of the high-rises are quite spectacular as you sail out from the marina.

Several different operators run tours for all types of budgets. During the day, island hopping tours are very popular and provide a relaxing sightseeing option. They include some beach and snorkeling time on various islands within the bay.

For city views, though, head out on a sunset or evening dinner tour so that you can see the city lights flicker into action as dusk sets over the city.

Yas Island's latest theme park addition, Warner Bros World is dedicated to its cartoon, movie, and comic book heroes and villains, with all rides based around these characters.

With six "lands" all captured under one roof (the entire theme park is inside and air-conditioned) this is one of the best places to visit for families.

There are rides suitable for tots to teens. Bedrock and Cartoon Junction are specifically set up for little ones, while Gotham City and Metropolis are home to some of the big-hitter highlight rides, which combine 4D interactive content with roller coaster-style thrills and spills.

Abu Dhabi's Formula One Grand Prix, which takes place in November, is the city's big annual event and is held at Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island.

If you're not in town for the racing, you can still experience some of that Formula One glamor year-round. There are regular guided tours of the circuit, including visits to the pits, grandstand, and podium for Formula One fans who want to see the track and get a behind-the-scenes look at the circuit.

For speed fans, though, Yas Marina Circuit is where you can book a variety of drive experiences (as either the driver or passenger in various styles of racing car) on the Formula One track itself.

If you just want to walk (or run, or cycle) on the track, every Tuesday and Saturday night the circuit is opened up for anyone who wants to use the track for exercise, and entry is free.

The most popular day trip or overnight trip from Abu Dhabi city is a desert safari to the south of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, either to the beautiful Liwa Oasis, which lays right on the edge of the Empty Quarter, or to the Al Khatim Desert near Al Ain .

The Empty Quarter desert contains the largest sand dunes in the world, and the dunes of both areas are a fantastic playground for anyone who wants to ride dune buggies, try sandboarding, go camel trekking, or simply soak up the vast star-strewn desert sky after dark at a desert camp.

Most trips include stops to visit a camel farm and offer a taste of traditional desert life, as well as heading into the dunes themselves.

The Evening Desert Safari is a great option for visitors with only a short time to spare, offering a six-hour tour into the emirate's desert environs. Visitors are taken on a 4x4 tour of the dunescape before settling down for dinner at a desert camp, with traditional tannura and belly dancing entertainment provided. Once at camp, guests can choose from a host of complimentary activities, such as sand-boarding and camel rides. All transport, with pickup and drop-off from Abu Dhabi hotels, and food is included.

One of the best short breaks from Abu Dhabi city is to the wildlife reserve of Sir Bani Yas Island, first established by Sheikh Zayed.

Indigenous Arabian wildlife such as gazelles and the endangered Arabian Oryx plus introduced animals, including giraffes and leopards, free roam within the vast reserve, which covers the interior of Sir Bani Yas Island.

The luxury resort here offers guests a variety of activities, including 4x4 safaris, walking safaris, and horse-riding tours to view wildlife within the reserve, as well as other activities, including hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking.

The island is accessed by boat (booked through the resort) from Jebel Dhanna, 260 kilometers west of the city.

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is a working veterinary hospital for ill and injured falcons, but it also provides guided tours of its facilities for interested visitors.

The tours allow you to get up close and personal with these birds of prey in the wards, while an on-site museum explains the history of falconry.

Guided tours of the hospital (which must be pre-booked) are held twice daily Monday to Thursday and once daily Friday and Sunday and are one of the few opportunities a visitor has in Abu Dhabi to connect with traditional Emirati heritage.

If you're up for the challenge, you may also have the chance to hold one of the birds, or even to feed one, depending on the activities the vets are performing at the time of your visit.

If the heat is grinding you down, head to Yas Island to cool off at the water park. Yas Waterworld is a mammoth theme park, spanning 37 acres with 40 rides, including multiple waterslides and an inner-tube river ride.

For serious adrenaline seekers, there's also the world's first hydromagnetic tornado water rafting ride; the world's largest surfable sheet wave; and the Jebel Drop, a free-fall speed waterslide.

For families with smaller children, there are also dedicated areas for gentler play.

Facilities are excellent, with plenty of restaurants, cafés, and shops to make it easy to spend a whole day of water park action here.

Abu Dhabi's answer to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai is this observation deck. It offers skyline views from the highest point in the city, on the 74th floor of the Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers hotel (at 300 meters above sea level).

There is an entry fee for non-guests of the hotel, but the ticket price can be redeemed for food and drink from the observation deck's restaurant which serves snacks and light bites; soft drinks; and a popular high-tea experience.

Having high tea up here is a leisurely way to take in the views, which swoop across the coast and the city with the arid desert plains beyond.

The recently restored Al-Hosn Fort, also known as the Old Fort or the White Fort, is the oldest building in Abu Dhabi and one of its major historical points of interest.

The palace was built in 1793 as the residence of the ruling family and the seat of government.

The interior of the Al Hosn Fort has been modernized and is now used as a museum that traces the history and culture of Abu Dhabi, with oral histories and plenty of historical photographs on show.

The courtyard and the magnificent tile work over the main northern gate are notable features.

Abu Dhabi's Heritage Village is an authentic replica of a typical Bedouin village that gives visitors an idea of Emirati life before the oil boom.

It's located in a pretty beach area of the city, which is a pleasant place to wander after a visit.

There are exhibits featuring traditional day-to-day objects, workshops where you can watch craftspeople demonstrate Emirati metalwork and weaving skills, and displays introducing visitors to local agriculture and the pearl diving trade-the main economies here before oil was discovered.

The heritage village is a bit rundown these days, but it remains one of the few places in the city where traditional Emirati life can be explored.

For mall shopping, Yas Mall on Yas Island is the major destination, with 370 shops.

For crafts, the World Trade Center Souk in downtown Abu Dhabi is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional bazaar, designed by architect Norman Foster. The shops here sell good gift items, ranging from incense and spices to inlaid woodwork and textiles.

To pick up a piece of classic Arab-style gold jewelry, head to the Gold Souq inside Madinat Zayed Shopping Center, where you'll find dozens of gold vendors.

Abu Dhabi city is vast, and hotels are spread out across the area. For first time visitors, the Downtown area, near the Corniche, is a good base and has a wide variety of hotels. If you're after a resort-style stay, check out Saadiyat Island and the area near the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, along the shores that separate Abu Dhabi Island from the mainland.

Constructed between 1996 and 2007 at the request of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and first president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is by far the most popular of Abu Dhabi's sights, and it's easy to see why. One of the largest mosques in the world, this house of worship features 82 domes, more than 1,000 columns and a white and gold facade. What's more, this is one of only two mosques in the UAE open to non-Muslim tourists. That means that visitors from all around the globe can walk across the world's largest hand-woven rug, gaze up at one of the world's largest chandeliers and admire the fusion of Fatimid, Mamluk and Ottoman architectural styles, representing three different Islamic dynasties.

Although it's not Abu Dhabi's oldest attraction, those who have visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque say that a stop here is a must for those who want a better understanding of the city's religious identity. The site is one of the world's most significant examples of contemporary Islamic architecture. You are welcome to explore the mosque on your own, but many travelers recommend tagging along on one of the free guided tours; tours take between 45 minutes and an hour and can be reserved in advance, or you can simply show up and wait for the next scheduled English tour. "Our guide was outstanding; no religion, just amazing facts and with his commentary we understood the incredible engineering, art [and] workmanship that make this so very special," according to one TripAdvisor user. Stretching nearly 5 miles along the coast of Dhow Harbour — from the Heritage Park to the northeast to Emirates Palace in the southwest — the Corniche makes up the horizontal part of Abu Dhabi city's "T" shape. This seaside promenade is lined with some of the city's most popular hotels, not to mention a variety of restaurants and shops. According to recent visitors, The Corniche offers extensive views of the Persian Gulf and the city skyline. "If you can, rent a bicycle," one TripAdvisor user advised. "It's […] a bit too long for a walk, but just right for a bicycle ride." You'll find several rental shops where you can pick up a set of wheels: FunRideSports has five stations along the Corniche where you can pick up a bike starting at 30 AED (around $8 USD) per hour.

But for most travelers, the main reason to visit the Corniche is to take advantage of its access to the city's beaches. Boasting volleyball nets, free concerts, ice cream shops and calm waters, Corniche Beach (located on the southwestern section of the promenade with the main entrance near the Hilton hotel) offers a family-friendly atmosphere, though you'll need to pay 10 AED (about $3 USD) to access the sands. Meanwhile, the city recently opened a public beach closer to the northern end of the Corniche: Known as the Western Extension, this mile of shoreline is free to access and features both swimming and water sports areas.

Like the Burj Al Arab in Dubai , Emirates Palace sets the standard for luxury lodging in Abu Dhabi. But you don't have to be a guest to experience what all the fuss is about. This resort — which occupies nearly 250 acres of coastline along the Corniche and stretches more than half a mile from wing to wing — has become one of Abu Dhabi city's most recognizable landmarks. Emirates Palace looks almost like a cross between the Taj Mahal and a fairy tale castle: The structure features more than 100 domes, the insides of which are decorated with gold, crystals and mother of pearl. More than 1,000 chandeliers and rich handmade carpets add to the interior's opulence, while outside the hotel, palm trees, lush gardens and bubbling fountains create an oasis effect.

Non-guests are welcome to enjoy a traditional hammam (Turkish bath) experience or a skin treatment at the Anantara Spa or grab a bite to eat at one of the hotel's nine restaurants. But most visitors were content simply wandering the grounds. One TripAdvisor user described Emirates Palace as "beautiful inside and out," adding, "I would recommend dressing nicely, to not feel out of place. It gives you a view of how 'the other half' lives." Rising more than 4,000 feet out of the desert and straddling the UAE-Oman border about 15 miles south of Al Ain, Jebel Hafeet stands as the tallest mountain in the emirate and the second-tallest mountain in the country. This mountain has played a significant role in Emirati history: Not only have several notable fossil discoveries been made here, but archaeologists have also unearthed more than 500 ancient burial sites in the Jebel Hafeet foothills. Yet most travelers don't plan a trip to this mountain because they're interested in history; rather, Jebel Hafeet offers what many road trip enthusiasts (including Edmunds.com and The Weather Channel) have deemed one of the best driving roads in the world. The road weaves its way through the mountain's limestone up to the summit, where you'll find the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet hotel, as well as beautiful views of Al Ain and neighboring Oman. The structure was erected as the headquarters of the Oman Trucial Scouts, a group tasked with the protection of the region's palm groves and the preservation of peace between the different tribes that once occupied the area. Today, visitors are welcome to explore the fort's battlements and watchtowers, which surround an expansive courtyard that often acts as a backdrop for outdoor concerts. Al Jahili also houses a small exhibit dedicated to British explorer Sir Wilfred Thesiger (fondly known in the UAE as "Mubarak Bin London), who is known for his journeys across the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter) desert .

Travelers who have spent time at Al Jahili say that the fort provides an interesting peek at the area's history while offering plenty of photo opportunities. Recent visitors are especially impressed with the Thesiger exhibit. According to one TripAdvisor user, "The exhibition of Wilfred Thesiger's photos as he lived amongst the Bedouin prior to oil discovery show a great insight into the history of this country."

The United Arab Emirates are a shopper's paradise: This wealthy country has no shortage of traditional souks (marketplaces) and high-end megamalls, with the Marina Mall being one of Abu Dhabi's most popular shopping venues. Located near Heritage Village on the Breakwater in the southwest corner of Abu Dhabi city, this immense shopping complex houses more than 400 stores, as well as a bowling alley, a movie theater, an ice rink and an amusement center complete with arcade games and rides. You'll also find a variety of restaurants and cafes in addition to a sprawling food court.

Recent travelers love the variety of shops and eateries found here, but several visitors say that the Marina Mall's observation deck was the highlight of their visit. Because of its location, the mall offers panoramas of the Persian Gulf, the Corniche and Emirates Palace . "I would recommend going around sunset to see a pretty spectacular view," one TripAdvisor user advised.

When the blazing Arabian heat starts to take its toll, you can find respite at the Al Ain Oasis. Occupying nearly 3,000 acres of central Al Ain, this quiet park is best known for its date palms — nearly 150,000 of them. These towering trees are part of plantations (some of them privately owned) that still help supply Abu Dhabi with the popular regional snack. Meanwhile, you'll have a chance to witness the ancient irrigation tactic known as " falaj ," which is still used to water the mango, orange, banana and fig trees. While you walk around, keep your eyes open for the remains of an old mosque and fortification, and keep your camera primed to capture the stark contrast between the verdant oasis and the dry desert.

Recent visitors describe the oasis as a nice place to explore, though some travelers note that finding your way around can be a challenge. "The guard said there is a spring worth seeing but [I] almost got lost inside and could not find anyone to ask for directions," one TripAdvisor user recalled.

Sitting on the western edge of the Al Ain Oasis , the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum (also known as the Al Ain Palace Museum) offers visitors a glimpse of what life was like for the UAE's founder and first president. Built in 1910, this large complex housed Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his family while he was in power. Visitors to the museum can learn more about the "Father of the Nation" as they wander through the palace's courtyards, gardens and sleeping quarters. You'll also have to opportunity to peek into the meeting rooms where Sheikh Zayed met with visiting dignitaries and other guests.

Those who have visited the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum say that a self-guided tour takes roughly an hour and that it's worth seeing if you make it to Al Ain. Travelers describe the palace as a beautiful, but one TripAdvisor user felt that the museum was lacking when it came to information: "There is a map, but no booklets for foreign visitors, which I think would be of benefit."

Although Abu Dhabi is constantly evolving, remnants of the UAE's heritage are easy to find. If you're interested in learning more about Abu Dhabi's roots, consider a visit to Heritage Village. Set across the Dhow Harbour from the Corniche , Heritage Village is a representation of the original fishing village that once stood here. While touring this living museum, you'll stroll past Bedouin tents and wooden huts housing workshops where you can watch weaving and metal-working demonstrations. The facility also features a restaurant and several shops where you can pick up local crafts and spices.

Travelers agree that Heritage Village offers an interesting peek at Abu Dhabi's history and appreciate that the attraction doesn't charge admission. However, many recent visitors lament the site's small size, noting that a visit won't require more than an hour or two.

One of the world's most technologically innovative racing venues, the Yas Marina Circuit hosts Grand Prix and Formula 1 races, but when the professionals aren't burning rubber, visitors are welcome to test out the track. Here, you have your choice of racing a variety of vehicles, including go-karts, Mercedes-Benz vehicles and even Aston Martins.

If you're not all that interested in getting behind the wheel, you can explore the facility on a tour. Guides will take you all around the track from the pit garages to the media center to the grandstand. "This was a great behind the scenes tour," one TripAdvisor user said. One of Abu Dhabi's more obscure attractions is the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital: This functioning animal care unit is devoted to the health of falcons, which have long played an important role in Emirati society. Falconry has been practiced in the UAE for thousands of years: Bedouins used falcons to help them hunt and scavenge for food. Today, falconry is more of a sport than a necessity as hunting is now restricted in Abu Dhabi. But the birds are still revered — domesticated falcons are even granted their own UAE passports. Having opened in 1999, the ADFH cares for more than 8,500 falcons each year.

If you're interested in learning more about falconry, the hospital offers two-hour guided tours of its facility. The tour stops at several points of interest, including the falconry museum, the hospital's exam rooms and the aviary, where the birds are free to fly around at their leisure. "Not only is the tour informational, it was exciting," one TripAdvisor user recalled. "We got to watch a minor surgery, grooming, and much more." Another highlight of the tour is the opportunity to balance a falcon on your arm — souvenir photos are included in the cost of the tour.

It’s no secret that visitors to the United Arab Emirates associate the country more with sizzling Dubai than stately Abu Dhabi . Yet the UAE’s capital has never been one to chase pizzazz.

Instead, Abu Dhabi has taken initiatives that emphasize heritage and culture, as well as family-friendly offerings such as theme parks. With easy access to beaches, mangroves and a gorgeous swathe of desert aptly known as the Empty Quarter, there’s plenty for nature enthusiasts here, too.

It’s true that Abu Dhabi is noticeably conservative, especially when compared to Dubai. But don’t let that deter you: it doesn’t take long to realize that the city is as ambitious as it is tradition-oriented, a mix that leaves newcomers wanting more.

Here are nine can’t-miss experiences that will show you the best of Abu Dhabi.

1. Soak up the spiritual allure of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Among Abu Dhabi’s many architectural wonders, none enraptures visitors quite like Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque . Occupying a site the size of four football fields, it can accommodate up to 40,000 worshippers and hosts millions of visitors every year. Despite the footfall, a sense of serenity always obtains – a mood accentuated by the lilting call to prayer that reverberates through the air five times a day.

A team of artisans, architects and engineers from across the globe worked on the monument for 11 years, producing a monument that fuses Mughal, Ottoman and Persian architectural influences. Gold-leaf spires, gilded chandeliers and columns inlaid with precious and semi-precious stones like amethyst lend a sense of opulence.

Visitors can explore the premises solo or with a guide. We recommend arriving late in the afternoon, when you can linger long enough to see the four minarets and 82 domes – all clad in gleaming white marble – bathed in the blue-tinted late-afternoon light.

Detour: Directly opposite the mosque, Wahat Al Karama (Oasis of Dignity) is another architectural feat whose award-winning centerpiece, The Memorial, features 31 aluminum-clad panels that lean against each other to symbolize unity. The Memorial Plaza is where you’ll find the ultimate view of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: behind a shallow pool of water that reflects it beautifully.

2. Contemplate the value of religious tolerance at Abrahamic Family House

This interfaith complex features three houses of worship representing the shared values of the three Abrahamic religions: Islam, Christianity and Judaism – a celebration of the spirit of tolerance that governs everyday life in the Emirates. A meeting in 2019 between Pope Francis and Grand Imam Ahmad Al-Tayyeb inspired the project, which features the first synagogue built in the Middle East (outside of Israel) in nearly 100 years.   Each of the three cubic sanctuaries is equal in scale, respecting the equality of the faiths they represent. Subtle architectural details – an abstracted crucifix in the church, a suspended bronze veil in the synagogue, panels of latticework in the mosque – salute the spiritual practices and traditions of the three faiths. Visitors are welcome to participate in prayer at any of the sanctuaries, while a guided tour provides a broad overview of all three religions.

Planning tip: Booking a (free) ticket online is required, as is dressing modestly. Women may borrow an abaya or headscarf at reception to visit the mosque.

3. Keep the whole family occupied at a theme park

World-class theme parks are perhaps what Abu Dhabi does best – and four of them are conveniently located on Yas Island , its entertainment capital. Ferrari World is all about high-octane action: it’s currently home to both the world’s fastest roller coaster and first-ever sideways coaster drop, as well as a 290m (950ft) go-kart track and state-of-the-art simulation experiences. Nearby, Yas Waterworld offers over 40 rides and slides for all ages, tied together by an interactive theme involving the quest to find a legendary pearl. You can even plunge to the depths of an underwater tank to collect oysters containing precious pearls, a nod to the UAE’s pearl-diving heritage. At 1.65 million sq ft (153,290 sq m), Warner Bros World is the largest indoor theme park in the world – and ideal for those in town with the kids during  the hotter months .

Elsewhere in town, Snow Abu Dhabi in Reem Mall makes the impossible possible: sledding, Zorbing and zip-lining inside a winter wonderland in the middle of a desert.

4. Escape to the desert, however you choose

The vast wilderness of Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter) is the stuff of legends, the subject of tales of sunken cities and disappearing caravans. Spanning a staggering 650,000 sq km (251,000 sq miles) across multiple countries on the Arabian Peninsula , it’s the largest continuous sand desert on Earth. It also happens to cover 70% of Abu Dhabi, and there are plenty of ways to immerse in its otherworldly beauty, from nature excursions to adrenaline-fueled activities to luxury stays.

A “desert safari” is ideal for first-time visitors. The standard offering comprises a variety of activities: the thrills of dune bashing over and across rolling sand dunes in a 4x4 vehicle, as well as quad biking, sand-boarding, camel rides, belly dance performances and a barbecue dinner. An overnight stay in the desert takes the experience up a notch – think ultra-clear starry skies followed by a spectacular sunrise, and (if done correctly) Bedouin hospitality. At glamping retreat Liwa Nights , Salam Almazrouei – whose Bedouin family has inhabited Liwa Oasis on the northern edge of Rub’ Al Khali for generations – introduces guests to the region’s cuisine, customs and traditions.

Planning tip: If you’re prone to motion sickness, it’s best to take your medicine 30 to 60 minutes before your desert safari begins, for between the dune bashing and quad biking, you’re in for a couple of wild rides. It’s also best to avoid alcohol and heavy meals beforehand.

5. Discover the city’s ambitions at Louvre Abu Dhabi

Louvre Abu Dhabi draws art and culture enthusiasts with its striking architecture; a growing permanent collection that features 700 artworks from every civilization; another 300 pieces on loan from partner museums; and temporary exhibitions that bridge East and West. Masterpieces on permanent view include The Subjugated Reader by René Magritte, Portrait of a Woman by Pablo Picasso and Young Emir Studying by Osman Hamdi Bey.

You could spend many hours in this palace of culture; those pressed for time can book an Express Tour to discover the highlights. However long you spend here, you’ll be able to take in Jean Nouvel’s extraordinary 7500-ton dome, which seems to float over the museum, its perforations creating a “rain of light” effect below.

6. Immerse yourself in local life along the Corniche

Abu Dhabi’s beloved Corniche , or waterfront esplanade, is where sunburned tourists most often intermingle with residents taking a break from the bustle of urban life. Here, young couples with squealing kids, fitness enthusiasts and elderly promenaders spill out along a promenade dotted with cafes, manicured gardens, volleyball courts and play areas. Dedicated pathways separate cyclists from pedestrians.

Lifeguarded Corniche Beach attracts those looking to beat the heat with a dip. Visitors can expect all the essentials – showers, cabanas, umbrellas and more – at this  Blue Flag site. You’ll find dedicated areas for singles, groups and families, making your beach day both safe and convenient. If you’re looking to really get out on the waves, rent a Jet Ski to whiz along the waterfront and enjoy views of the city’s gleaming skyscrapers.

7. Cool off in style at a luxurious beach club

Since year-round sunshine always prevails in this part of the world, pool and beach days are the ultimate leisure pursuit. At Saadiyat Beach Club , white sand and turquoise waters are accented with Mediterranean fare, fitness facilities, a hot tub, private cabanas for when blissful seclusion is desired, and an infinity pool that steals the show every time. The average day here may entail an encounter with a world-class DJ or critically endangered hawksbill turtles – both have been known to make appearances at this stylish place.

The more relaxed Nation Riviera Beach Club and Bayshore Beach Club can both be found within luxury hotels (the St Regis Abu Dhabi and InterContinental Abu Dhabi, respectively), and promise quality family time.

Deserts and mangroves don’t seem like a natural pair, but they’re intrinsically linked. Dominating the coastal vegetation of the Arabian Peninsula, dense mangrove trees help purify and calm tidal flows while removing and locking away impressive amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In Abu Dhabi, their biodiversity – not to mention their beauty – are protected by a local environmental agency.

In Mangrove National Park , mottled crabs, greater flamingos, western reef herons and even famously skittish dugongs (sea cows) congregate. Kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding through the still waters here is the best way to get up and close with these locals. 9. Step back in time in the city’s most historic neighborhoods

Concealed amid the mega malls, luxury hotels and golf courses are the old neighborhoods of Al Danah and Al Zahiyah, both rarely visited by tourists. Mom-and-pop stores have been standing here for over 40 years, suggesting a much simpler past.

On a stroll through their lanes and alleys, you’ll see family-owned bakeries, kebab restaurants, textile stores, tailor shops and salons – a living lesson in how expats from Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, Iran, India and Pakistan have shaped this city’s social and cultural fabric. The government has (rightfully) designated these areas as “ Urban Treasures .”

Local tip: A go-to for the city’s long-standing residents, Abu Al Afwal Cafeteria is a humble joint run by Sudanese immigrant Al Zahiyah. Be sure to order a portion of the foul , a hearty stew made with fava beans – a recipe that has been drawing lines of customers since its debut in 1975.

Alternatively, public transportation options include local buses, the Dubai metro, trams, water taxis and abras (wooden boats).

Whilst we love the entertainment offering in Abu Dhabi, from the  Yas Island theme parks  to the beautiful beaches and parks, these cultural attractions should be a must on every visitor’s itinerary for Abu Dhabi.

We have included eight absolute must-stop points in Abu Dhabi city for the culturally intrigued, as well as a further four attractions you can add on a day trip to the Emirate’s second largest city Al Ain.

How to get there – navigating around Abu Dhabi

Most of these attractions can be easily accessed by staying in central Abu Dhabi, by taxi, or as stops accessible on the  Abu Dhabi Big Bus Hop-on-hop-off service .

Top Tip : If you are visiting Abu Dhabi from Dubai, it is highly recommended you arrange a private tour to capture all the highlights and work to your own timetable rather than being stuck in a big coach group.

Note that it would be impossible to fit all of these attractions into a 1 Day Abu Dhabi itinerary – we’d suggest picking out three from the list you want to see most; Al Ain really needs a full extra day in your travel plans.

1. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The unmissable first attraction on most Abu Dhabi visitors lists, and with good reason.  The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is not just a stunning landmark but an active house of worship, open to all religions to admire and reflect.

There is a minimum dress standard expected , but this only adds to the experience. It is free to enter the Grand Mosque and free to join a guided tour. 

Few places in the world offer such an amazing experience, open to all.

2. The Louvre Abu Dhabi

Although not directly Emirati or Bedioun culture, The Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi is an unmissable part of the UAE’s modern culture, reflective of blending so many different cultures and traditions.

The Louvre Museum’s main galleries take you on a journey through humanity, from early civilisations and communications through to the modern era of art, seamlessly blending between East and West.

3. Qasr al Watan – The Presidential Palace

Part of the new Presidential Palace complex, Qasr al Watan is one of the most beautiful examples of modern Islamic architecture.

Whilst you cannot visit the working parts of the Palace, visitors are invited to explore the public areas of Qasr Al Watan, enjoy daily guided tours, and explore the expansive gardens, the Great Hall, the library and an evening sound and light show at 7.30 PM.

4. The Founders Memorial

Launched during the Year of Zayed – the 100-year anniversary of the country’s founding father, HH Sheikh Zayed – the Founders Memorial is a stunning sculptural display set at the end of the Corniche on the corner of Emirates Palace before you cross to the marina. 

Open day and night but is most impressive to see at sunset when the 1327 dangling geometric shapes become illuminated by 2000 lights to form a 3D image of HH Sheikh Zayed.

5. Wahat Al Karama

Situated opposite the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a Memorial and Pavillion of Honour were opened in 2016 to immortalise the sacrifices made by UAE nationals in active service for their country.

Translated to English, the “Oasis of Dignity”  is made of 31 aluminium-clad tablets that lean on one another in support, and are inscribed with poems and quotations.  This is an incredibly sad yet important chapter in the UAE’s modern history, a country rarely involved in conflict.

You can easily combine a visit to the Grand Mosque with Wahat al Karama for some of the best distance Mosque views but crossing the busy freeway is a challenge. (You can now catch a courtesy bus every 30 minutes between SZGM and Wahat al Karama).

6. Qasr al Hosn

The oldest standing building in Abu Dhabi, built in the 1790s, the stone fort was originally constructed to overlook the coastal trade routes and protect the growing island settlement.

Recently reopened after extensive renovation work, Qasr al Hosn is now the city’s centrepiece of culture and learning.

As well as a history museum, it is also home to the  Cultural Foundation  and the city’s new  Abu Dhabi Children’s Library.  There is a daily program of cultural events and special events held on the grounds throughout the year.

7. UAE Heritage Village

Based on Abu Dhabi’s Corniche breakwater with stunning views back to the ultra-modern Abu Dhabi skyline.

The Heritage Village is run by the Emirates Heritage Club, giving you a taster of traditional bedouin housing, an old-style souk, and artisans producing handicrafts, including pottery and weaving. On occasion, they also have falconry displays and craftsmen demonstrations.

It has been outshone, however, by the re-opening of Qasr al Hosn, which has many more interactive displays. Entry is completely free if you are seeking just a small introductory taster to Bedouin life in the city.

8. The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

This humble building on the city’s outskirts offers a fascinating insight into Emirati culture and the importance of falconry.

A 2-hour guided tour of the facilities in Sweihan will guide you through the historic importance of falconry to the Bedouin people through to the hospital itself where these majestic birds are cared for and you have the opportunity of up-close encounters.

It comes with a heftier price tag than some of the other attractions listed here, but in our own experience, it was worth every dirham. A really in-depth tour is provided with narrative, a chance to see the Falcons up close, and even see an operation take place. Pre-booking essential.

Al ain cultural attractions.

The next four cultural attractions are based in Al Ain, the Oasis city that sits 160kms south of Abu Dhabi city centre.  It is also known as the cultural capital of the UAE, home to the country’s founding fathers and steeped in history.

9. Al Ain Palace Museum

The historic royal residence of the UAE’s founding father HH Sheikh Zayed. This beautifully restored homestead in Al Ain is a vast contrast to the modern-day Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi city.

The palace was his primary family home until 1966 and has been restored and turned into a museum of the Al Nahyan family’s history. Delving into HH Sheikh Zayed’s personal and political life, it gives you a good taste of what life was like in the UAE before the discovery of oil. You can also have a go at trying to understand the Al Nahyan royal family tree!

10. Qasr al Muwaiji

Also situated in Al Ain, this much more modern museum complex sits on the grounds of the original birthplace of the country’s second president HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed al Nayhan.

Explore the historic buildings, listen to oral narratives and follow the significant achievements of HH Sheikh Khalifa’s life.

11. Al Ain Oasis

The 3000-acre oasis can be found in the centre of Al Ain.  Home to over 147,000 palm trees, the oasis was designated as a  UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011,  along with six other smaller oases across the city.

Almost compulsory for everyone who lives in the UAE to understand the way of life. Explore the 3000-year-old falaj irrigation system – a grid of waterways for channelling fresh clean water from off the mountains and into the oasis. You will also find the miniature oasis which is an interactive display breaking down the workings of the oasis.

12. The Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre

Situated inside the Al Ain Zoo, this is definitely one of the country’s best learning resources for culture, heritage and natural history – and completely deserving of more attention, arguably where we’d recommend all visitors to the UAE start their learning journey!

There are five interactive galleries spread over multiple levels that take you on a journey from the desert past, local geology and neolithic period life all the way through to the country’s present and future, along with sustainability education and initiatives.

A Camel Beauty Pageant – The Al Dhafra Festival

If you are living in the UAE, or are visiting during December , then attending the Al Dhafra festival in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi is a must.

Established in 2007, the festival was established to educate younger generations about their country’s indigenous heritage, traditions and culture. Events range from the ever-popular camel beauty contest through to date packing, camel milking, Saluki racing and falconry.

Information on the event’s program, in English at least, has been scant in the past but is improving.  It’s one of those events you should turn up to and absorb the atmosphere, situated in Madinat Zayed Park, approximately 2 hours from Abu Dhabi city.

Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival

A great new addition to the UAE culture calendar, this annual event is held in a purpose-built centre for culture in Al Watha , just outside of Abu Dhabi city. It showcases local foods, dance and traditional events while taking visitors on a journey from ancient times to a prosperous society.

As the event has grown in popularity, it can now be enjoyed for several months over the cooler winter season. This year the festival is open nightly from 17 November 2022 to 9 March 2024. The entry fee is just 5 AED per person.

Al Maqtaa Fort Built 200 years ago to protect the city, the Al Maqtaa Fort is located on the edge of Abu Dhabi. Today, it stands adjacent to a modern bridge, indicating the perfect blend of the city’s past and present.

Emirates Palace Hotel The Emirates Palace Hotel is a magnificent, seven-star hotel and one Abu Dhabi’s most popular landmarks. It features beautiful fountains, gardens, and palm trees. The hotel also has a huge conference center where cultural events are often held.

Falcon City As the name suggests, Falcon City is an award-winning hospital and home to the iconic birds of the UAE: falcons. It includes lush gardens and wards created especially for the majestic falcons.

Heritage Village The Heritage Village provides visitors with a glimpse into the city’s history. It features traditional houses, fishing villages, and souqs. Here, you can view ancient artifacts, crafts, and a special collection of the Holy Quran.

Khalifa Park You will find Khalifa Park behind the old airport of the city, at Al Matar. Aside from its beautiful landscaped gardens, Khalifa Park includes an amphitheater, central plaza, mosque, and museum. It also provides a monorail that can take you around the entire park.

Oasis City The Oasis City of Al Ain is situated to the east of Abu Dhabi, near the border to Oman. The city boasts of museums, heritage sites, parks, and golf courses right at the foot of the emirate’s tallest peak, Jebel Hafeet.

Qasr al-Hosn The oldest historic building in the emirate, Qasr al-Hosn, is also known as the old fort or white fort. Until 1996, it served as the royal palace as well as the seat of government in the UAE. The area includes the Cultural Foundation Center, which hosts various art, film, and musical events.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Comprised of 80 domes and 1000 columns, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is one of the largest mosques in the world. This architectural wonder showcases 24-carat gold-plated chandeliers, as well as the biggest hand-woven carpet you will ever see.

The Corniche The Corniche is a coastal area where you can gaze at the city’s modern buildings while walking through gorgeous parks and fountains. The place is perfect for bird-watching, fishing, and riding the dhow, a traditional wooden boat.

Women’s Handicraft Centre The Women’s Handicraft Center presents locally-made handicrafts, costumes, perfumed oils, and pottery. Managed by the Abu Dhabi Women’s Association, the center also has a kitchen area that serves authentic Gulf cuisine.

Saadiyat and Yas Islands Saadiyat Island is an arts and cultural center that houses a maritime museum, performing arts center, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Louvre Abu Dhabu, and the Zayed National Museum. Meanwhile, Yas Island features Ferrari World, which is one of the largest indoor theme parks in the world. Here, you will also find a world-class F1 race track, the Yas Marina Circuit.

Zayed Centre The Zayed Center is a museum that presents the life of the “Father of the Nation,” the late Sheikh Zayed. Situated in the Heritage Village, it includes a photo gallery of Sheikh Zayed as well as exhibits of his personal memorabilia.

As the capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi plays a major role in the country’s growth and development. But aside from being the seat of government and a business center, it is also a place where residents and tourists can have an amazing travel experience.

This Indoor Marine Park Was Just Named The Largest In The World

Understanding the ocean and its 243,613 discovered species doesn’t require a scuba certification or access to a deep-sea submarine. This is especially the case if you’re travelling through Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, where SeaWorld Yas Island, Abu Dhabi opened its doors in 2023. The marine park, which spans five levels and over 1.9 million square feet, was just named the “Largest Indoor Marine-Life Theme Park” in the world by Guinness World Records and has everything an ocean-loving visitor could want — from animal encounters to theme park rides.

“We are very pleased to receive recognition from Guinness World Records as the world’s largest marine-life theme park ,” Thomas Kaferle, SeaWorld Yas Island’s general manager, said in a press release obtained by Travel + Leisure . “This prestigious achievement is a testament to our commitment to providing the best possible entertainment experience, coupled with an interactive educational aspect enabling guests to learn more about marine life in a fun and entertaining setting that engages all ages.”

Here’s what visitors can expect at SeaWorld Yas Island in Abu Dhabi  

Beyond being large, the facility is dedicated to providing the highest standard of animal welfare and is certified by Global Humane , the world’s largest certifier of animal welfare. To that end, there are no orcas at the facility — but there are over 100,000 other creatures, including dolphins , sea lions, walruses, sharks, rays, and puffins.

The park is broken up into eight realms, so visitors can travel to various oceans and see the creatures that live there. The realms include the Abu Dhabi Ocean, One Ocean, MicroOcean, Endless Ocean, Tropical Ocean, Rocky Point, and two Polar Ocean realms — the Arctic and Antarctica. In the Tropical Ocean realm, for example, you’ll see dolphins and a tropical rainforest, while in Antarctica’s Polar Ocean, you can watch six types of penguins play in their natural habitat.

The realms also include 15 interactive experiences and rides, like the Manta Coaster, which boasts a zero gravity flip and a bioluminescent tunnel that shows off the Tropical Ocean’s reef and marine life. Meanwhile, at the Explorers’ Sea Base in the MicroOcean realm, visitors can climb, crawl, and slide on a play structure that runs above, below, and between the MicroOcean.

To get up close to the creatures of SeaWorld Yas Island, visitors need only head to one of the park’s 10 animal encounters. You can feed sea lions , watch a pod of dolphins put on a show, or touch the marine life of the Gulf — including sharks, rays, and invertebrates. In the Abu Dhabi Ocean realm, you can even get up close to a rescued dugong, a relative of the manatee.

SeaWorld Yas Island also has 13 retail outlets and 17 dining options, including many that are set waterside, offering views of the underwater world while you dine.

Entry to SeaWorld Yas Island is AED 375 (over USD 100 or INR 8,334) for adults, and AED 290 (under USD 80 or INR 6,675) for kids under the park’s 1.1 meter (3.6 feet) height restriction.

Eid Al Fitr 2024: Fireworks to light up the skies over Dubai and Abu Dhabi

W ith Eid Al Fitr expected to start on Tuesday or Wednesday next week, the UAE has announced a week-long holiday for public sector employees, starting from Monday, April 8. Several venues have planned firework displays that will light the skies to celebrate the occasion.

Here are some of the places where you can watch the fireworks in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Bluewaters Island, Dubai

The man-made island opposite JBR will host a firework display on the third day of the Eid Al Fitr holiday, at 8pm.

The show can be viewed from the island's promenade, the bridge connecting Bluewaters and JBR, or from one of several restaurants dotted along the waterfront.

Al Seef, Dubai

The Creek at Al Seef is a quaint yet vibrant area and includes a 1.8km promenade, two heritage districts, a marina and restaurants. These spots will offer views of the fireworks on the second day of Eid, at 8pm.

Global Village

The multicultural attraction is going out with a bang before it closes its doors for the summer, with daily musical fireworks planned at 9pm each day from April 10 to 14. The open-air park will also have an Eid Wonder Souq, with kiosks offering themed gifts, souvenirs and food.

Dubai Festival City

The mall's Festival Bay will host displays at 10pm each night from April 5 to 7, to mark the last week of Ramadan. A special display will also be held in the area at 8pm on the first day of Eid.

Dubai Parks and Resorts

Head to Riverland on the first and second days of Eid Al Fitr to catch a firework show at 8pm. The family-friendly theme park will also put on daily laser shows three times each evening from April 10 to 12.

Al Hudayriyat Island, Abu Dhabi

The night sky will light up during the firework display at this family-friendly spot, known as Abu Dhabi's adventure playground. The show is set to take place in Marsana at 9pm on the first day of Eid. The island will also host an Eid-themed event from 5pm to 11pm on day two of the holiday, complete with an outdoor cinema, a henna station, gaming and children's zones, roaming carnival performers and a DJ.

Yas Island, Abu Dhabi

Both Yas Marina and Yas Bay Waterfront will provide Eid entertainment with an eye-catching display of fireworks. The shows will take place at 9pm on each night of Eid Al Fitr.

The mountainous Dubai town will put on a firework show at 8pm on the first day of Eid, illuminating the record-breaking Hatta sign to glorious effect. Visitors can also expect a 30 per cent discount on all Hatta Outdoor packages in Wadi Hub, from ziplining and wall-climbing to archery and net-walking, through the Eid Al Fitr break.
