Best Places to Visit in California in March: Northern California

The Redwoods are magical year-round, but visiting in March can be truly special. Spring is the time of year when the Redwood forests are extra green and lush, and have fewer crowds. This part of California has so much to offer, no matter how many times you’ve visited. Thus, Redwoods is one of the best places to visit in California in March.  

Three to five days would be ideal to see a large amount of what the Northern California Redwoods has to offer. Renting a car is the best option for this destination due to the lack of public transportation. San Francisco is the closest major airport and offers many car and van rental options. 

Arcata and Crescent City, California, are located in the heart of the Redwoods and offer some of the best things to do, as well as places to stay. Campgrounds are open year-round if you are traveling on a budget, and Airbnb and Hotels are reasonable in both cities. For a more luxurious and unique stay, check out The Front Porch Inn in Arcata.

Start at the Avenue of Giants and be sure to walk the half-mile Founders Grove Trail. Continue North to check out the Redwood Skywalk in Eureka or Trees of Mystery in Klamath for an elevated view of the forest. And don’t miss elk viewing in Orick, California, at the Prairie Creek Visitors Center. 

Another perk of visiting the Redwoods in March is that permits are not required to see the stunning Fern Canyon, where part of Jurassic Park was filmed. The Northernmost Redwoods destinations are in the gorgeous Jedediah Smith State Park forests. Drive the scenic Howland Hill Dirt Road to get up close to these towering giants, and be sure to stop at Simpson Reed or Stout Grove Trail! Getting to San Francisco is convenient with its well-connected international airport, San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Upon arrival, car renting is optional due to the city’s efficient public transportation system, including the famous cable cars, buses, and the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) system. This network makes navigating the city both accessible and affordable.

Like many California locations, Los Gatos is beautiful in early spring. With temperatures that range from the high 40s at night to the mid-60s during the day, you’ll need to pack a light jacket or sweater to see the sights. The town makes the perfect place to visit for a long weekend or in addition to a more extended trip, especially if you’re already headed to San Francisco or San Jose. 

The best way to get to Los Gatos is by flying into San Jose airport and renting a car or having a car service take you to the area. If you choose a car service, the town is very walkable, so you can have a relaxing vacation and plan to walk around the destination. Center your stay at  Hotel Los Gatos , which feels like a secluded paradise with its Tuscan vibes and fabulous on-site restaurant—budget around $200 per night for accommodations, which includes breakfast and other amenities.

Wine lovers will enjoy visiting Testarossa Winery to do a tasting while listening to live entertainment. For the fashionista or art collector, the downtown area is filled with locally owned shops and boutiques, and movie enthusiasts shouldn’t miss the newly renovated Cinelux Los Gatos Theatre to see the latest shows. The area also has many parks and museums to visit or feel free to relax and enjoy the hotel property. No matter what you choose to do, Los Gatos is a quaint, quiet area where you can have the perfect experience.

Best Places to Visit in California in March: Central California

Yosemite is a stunning natural park that draws millions of visitors each year. It is one of the top 10 landmarks in California . Being a popular destination in peak season, Yosemite is a great park to visit in the spring to avoid summer crowds, thus making it one of the best places to visit in California in March.

I would recommend driving down to Yosemite with your own car. It will give you flexibility to cover the large area of the park. You need to plan ahead as to where to stay inside the park and what spots/trails to cover. There are a few hotels that get booked much in advance. If you are going with a group of friends/family, I recommend booking a mountain lodge or cabin within the park on VRBO. These are spacious and more budget-friendly. You can spend anywhere between 2 to 7 days exploring this national park.

Valleys, waterfalls, giant Sequoia trees, hiking trails, Yosemite has it all. One of the best things to do at Yosemite National Park is a visit to Glacier Point. This has stunning vistas and the view of the Half Dome without any need for hiking whatsoever. You can enjoy the Lower Yosemite Falls, another popular spot. There are several hiking trails in this national park for outdoor lovers. Sentinel Dome hike is an easy hike with great views of the Half Dome and El Capitan. You can visit Mariposa Grove for the giant sequoia trees.

The beaches of San Simeon are arguably some of the most spectacular in California. Whether you are looking for adventurous water sports or just somewhere to relax and soak up the sun, there will be a beach for you!  

There is, however, something very special indeed about one particular stretch of this coastline where you can find the world’s most easily accessible and free to visit, Elephant Seal Rookery. These large, ocean-going mammals really do need to be seen (and smelt!) to be believed. Weighing up to 5,000kg and with a trunk-like nose, they look like nothing else on earth.  

March is at the end of the Elephant Seal birthing season and is the perfect time to see large numbers of them on the beaches with lots of adult females and, usually, a couple of much larger males. It is not uncommon to see males squaring up to each other, making a lot of loud grunts and growls. These altercations can lead to fights, and whilst they can look brutal, it is all part of the breeding process and helps ensure the strongest and fittest bulls get to mate.  

To help you get the most from your visit, the Friends of the Elephant Seal are available to answer questions at the viewing areas from 10am to 4pm daily. Being just off Highway 1, it is super easy to get to either by car or Public Transport from San Jose or Los Angeles. There are several affordable places to eat and stay, including a campsite, several hotels, and a Mexican Restaurant.  

You are unlikely to need more than half a day if you only want to see the Elephant seals, but if you would like to explore the other beaches, you could easily find plenty to do for a week.  

Mammoth Lakes

Mammoth Lakes is a wonderful destination in California in any season, but March is an especially excellent time to visit this Eastern Sierra mountain town. You can enjoy many of the outdoor activities Mammoth is famous for in ideal conditions in the spring while avoiding the big summer and winter crowds.

If you’re a skier, you can still hit the slopes for spring skiing at Mammoth Mountain in March, and even though you’ll still find plenty of snow at the higher elevations here, you can enjoy many Mammoth hiking trails on snowshoes. Definitely check out Minaret Vista for snowshoeing and one of the most breathtaking views in Mammoth. All of these trails make Mammoth one of the best places to visit in California in March.

To get around in March, you’ll probably want to rent a car since a lot of the shuttle services won’t be running. Mammoth Lakes can be pricey if you splurge on lift tickets and resort accommodations, but you can mostly do Mammoth on a budget if you spend the majority of your time outside and book cheaper lodging on Main Street.

A long weekend would make the perfect March getaway to Mammoth, but if you want to dabble in all the outdoor adventures, you might want to spend some more time in this magical place!

Best Places to Visit in California in March: Southern California

Death valley.

Death Valley, known as being one of the hottest locations on earth, is definitely one of the best places to visit in California in March. This is one of the only months of the year where the weather is characterized by warm days without being too hot, which is perfect for exploring the park’s unusual and dramatic landscapes. If the previous winter brought rain, March is when colorful wildflowers can emerge across the dusty terrain.

Located in the Mojave Desert, Death Valley is in a very remote location, and the best way to reach it is by car. It’s a great addition to a Southwest Road Trip , as it takes around 4 hours to drive from Los Angeles and about 2 hours from Las Vegas. Once in the park, there are very few places to fill up on gas and it is much more expensive here.

Although you can certainly see some of the iconic sights in just a day, I recommend planning two full days here. One of the best places for sunrise, in my opinion, is Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America. You will need to walk about 15 minutes to reach the bright white salt flats as the area near the car park is quite muddy. 

Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes is the best place to visit for sunset, as the daytime can be too hot to climb up the mountains of sand. Other points of interest that you shouldn’t miss are Zabriskie Point, Artist’s Palette, and Dante’s View Point. 

Furnace Creek is the best place to stay. Not only is this pretty central to all the sights but you have a good choice of accommodation for all budgets from hotels to camping. Access to Death Valley is $30 per vehicle for a 7-day pass, or you can use the America the Beautiful annual pass, which is $80.

La Jolla is a cute seaside town about 14 miles north of San Diego.  The weather in March is generally mild, making it a terrific place to get away for a few days and one of the best places to visit in California in March. To get to La Jolla, consider either driving or flying into San Diego Airport.  Once in La Jolla, you don’t need a car, but it would be easier to have one if you plan to leave Downtown La Jolla.

March is an excellent time to walk along the coast and see the ocean, teaming with sea life.  For those who prefer to be more active, surfing, kayaking, and scuba diving are popular things to do in La Jolla .  

La Jolla has two walkable areas near the coast.  In Downtown La Jolla, many people visit the La Jolla Cove area to check out the sea lions, seals, and birds.  While downtown, there are plenty of shops and art galleries to browse and delicious restaurants to try.

La Jolla Shores also offers a small walkable area with several restaurants and a few stores.  The nearby La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club is an excellent place to stay for a family getaway.  Families can find several activities to do together, such as swimming, golfing, playing tennis, or enjoying the playground with the younger kids.  La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club also has its own private beach. 

For a unique dining experience, guests might book an upscale dinner at the Marine Room, where the waves crash against the restaurant’s windows under the right conditions. La Jolla also offers plenty of educational opportunities, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and the Birch Aquarium at Scripps.

Joshua Tree

March is an ideal time to visit Joshua Tree National Park . The weather is comfortably mild, avoiding the intense heat of summer. Plus, with no major school vacations, it’s less crowded and more affordable. It’s also the time of year when you have the best chance of seeing Joshua trees bloom. For a fulfilling experience, a weekend is perfect to explore the park’s highlights. But if you’re interested in visiting nearby destinations like the town of Joshua Tree or Palm Springs, consider extending your trip to at least five days.

Getting there does require your own vehicle, as there’s no longer a shuttle service in the park. A regular car is fine unless you’re planning some off-road adventures, in which case a 4×4 would be necessary. For accommodations, try to grab a camping spot within the park for an authentic natural experience (advanced planning required). Alternatively, the town of Joshua Tree offers a range of options, from cozy tiny homes to luxurious villas.

There’s no shortage of activities in Joshua Tree. Whether it’s hiking, bouldering, star gazing, or enjoying local art walks and honky-tonks, there’s something for everyone. While it is a favorite for adventure travelers, everyone from children to grandparents to those traveling with a dog can enjoy themselves. 

Budget-wise, it can be quite economical, especially if you camp in the park with an annual pass and bring your own food. However, most people should expect to spend at least $150 per night for accommodations plus the cost of dining out once a day, placing it in the mid-range budget category for California.

Joshua Tree National Park is a unique and otherworldly place to visit, so it’s definitely worth adding to your bucket list and one of the best places to visit in California in March.

Palm Springs

One of the most fabulous places to visit in California in March is Palm Springs ! During this time of the year, the city experiences an average high temperature of 81°F and an average low temperature of 52°F, which means you can beat the sweltering heat that normally makes this desert region insufferable during the summertime!

Another reason to visit this city during this time of the year is to check out the exciting annual BNP Paribas tournament ! This is a massive event where guests can see the world’s best tennis players compete against one another. The event promises exceptional tennis, festive decorations, and an all-around unforgettable time! But, if tennis isn’t your cup of tea, there are plenty of other things to do in the area. For instance, you can go hiking along the many trails. There’s also the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens!

In terms of cost, you can expect to spend about $800 for a long weekend stay. This is assuming you stay at a mid-range hotel that’s well-located near downtown Palm Springs, such as Los Arboles Hotel. That said, this estimate does not include the cost of flying into the Palm Springs International Airport or your cost of driving to the city! All in all, Palm Springs is a great place to visit in March if you’re looking to escape the cold and enjoy some warm weather and exciting events!

The 10 Best Things to Do in California in March

Chances are, you don’t need another excuse to visit California. The spectacular variety of landscapes, dramatic coastlines, rolling hills, and rugged mountain peaks are all stunning year-round, so how can you decide when to visit?

There’s something to love about every season in the Golden State, but this post is dedicated to the best things to do in California in March, aka prime time for checking out California’s deserts , witnessing wildflower blooms, and much more:

1. Camp in Death Valley National Park

Death Valley National Park is full of natural wonders, from the colorful Artist’s Palette to the gorgeous Golden Canyon and the can’t-miss Badwater Basin salt flats. However, Death Valley’s name is not an accident, and visiting this desert paradise is anything but fun in the summertime, because of the scorching temperatures.

That’s why you should check it out in March. Daytime highs typically hover in the 70s, with lots of sunshine and a gentle breeze; temperatures drop into the mid-40s at night.

This is also perhaps the best time of year to camp in Death Valley , because of the mild weather and low tourist numbers. There are plenty of campgrounds to choose from, or you can venture out into the desert for backcountry camping. However you choose to camp here, the payoff is huge, as the beautiful scenery in Death Valley can’t be beaten.

2. Explore Joshua Tree National Park

A longtime favorite among hikers, rock climbers, and desert enthusiasts, Joshua Tree is easily one of the most beautiful places in California . On top of the sunny, mild weather, the biggest reason to visit in March is to catch the wildflower blooms. Technically, the brightly colored flowers begin to pop up in February, but by March they’re much brighter and plentiful. Plus, those at higher elevations are also starting to bloom by now, creating an even more spectacular scene of springtime hues.

Already sold on Joshua Tree this March? You’ll find plenty to do here besides checking out the wildflowers, from catching a sunrise to hiking the Arch Rock Nature Trail at night for a stunning look at the stars, among other activities.

3. See a California superbloom

Speaking of brilliant wildflowers, many natural areas in California are ideal in March because of the amazing superblooms you can find (as proof, that’s an entire post dedicated to them!). But which ones are the best in March? Pinnacles National Park’s volcanic soil makes the perfect home for wildflowers, which bloom from March to May. You’ll find awesome displays of poppies, lupines, larkspur, milkmaids, monkey flowers, and fiesta flowers, creating a dazzling display of hues. Then, often peaking mid-March, you can catch poppies covering the rolling hills of Lancaster in Los Angeles County, and parts of San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

4. Go whale watching

All along the coast of California, you can spot magnificent gray whales during the month of March. One of the best places to see these beauties is Monterey Bay, a hotbed of marine activity year-round. Your best bet is to join a whale-watching tour like this one , which has an expert guide aboard who can provide context about the area’s wildlife, conservation, and natural history.

5. Watch baby elephant seals at Año Nuevo State Park

If you can’t get enough of California’s wildlife, head to Año Nuevo State Park in Pescadero. During March, you’ll be able to see baby and adolescent elephant seals on the shore, because most pups are born between December and February. Año Nuevo is the best place in California to see elephant seals, and March is a great time to explore other parts of the park, because of the mild weather, so it’s a win-win! March can also be a beautiful time to drive the Pacific Coast Highway , stopping here and some of the charming California beach towns along the way.

6. Taste wine in Napa Valley or Sonoma County

Thought fall was the only great time to visit California’s best wineries? Think again! The peak season for wine tasting is August through October — meaning more crowds and higher prices. However, March through May also has fantastic weather for exploring vineyards. In March, specifically, the crowds are smaller, and prices are more reasonable.

Napa Valley is California’s most famous wine area, followed by Sonoma County. Both are fantastic in March, but Sonoma might have a leg up because of the special barrel tastings offered. If you want to check out both, you can do so on this tour !

7. north lake tahoe snowfest.

While most of California is well thawed by March (or never froze to begin with — looking at you, SoCal), North Lake Tahoe hangs onto winter with its annual Snowfest at the beginning of the month (March 2-12 this year). As one of the largest winter mountain festivals on the West Coast, this spectacular event is ideal for anyone who greatly appreciates a white wonderland.

The festival has a stellar parade through Tahoe City and Kings Beach, an epic snow-sculpting competition in River Ranch, a daring polar bear swim in Gar Woods, a snow golf (yes, it’s a thing) tournament, and many more activities. When it comes to wintry activities in Tahoe , this is one of the best.

8. Coachella Valley Wildflower Festival

Who says Coachella Valley is only worth visiting during the music festival in April? Celebrating wellness, recreation, and gorgeous wildflowers (and much more low-key), the annual Coachella Valley Wildflower Festival on March 4 is a quaint springtime activity you can’t miss. The event is free, and you’ll enjoy live music, local food and drinks, and artisan vendors galore. You’ll get to see the area before the madness of the music festival.

9. California Artisan Cheese Festival

You had me at cheese festival, honestly. The California Artisan Cheese Festival in Santa Rosa March 24-26 is a must if you love all things dairy. The festival boasts one-of-a-kind tours, tastings, seminars, a cheese crawl, and a marketplace. It’s truly a cheese enthusiast’s paradise and perhaps the most unique festival in California in March.

10. Sonoma Film Festival

Calling all movie buffs! The March 22-26 Sonoma Film Festival features spectacular independent films, delicious food and wine, and seminars by special guests. Visitors love the social atmosphere, eclectic selection of films, and access to advanced screenings. Don’t miss out on this wonderful event in Sonoma this month!

Some places in California are great anytime, but these are especially nice to visit during the Spring. In the Golden State, that means in March, April, and May.

During the spring season, you can see some gorgeous wildflowers and catch Yosemite's waterfalls at their best. You can visit a few places that are going to get too crowded in the summer - and you could even take in a meteor shower.

In spring, expect some of the year's best weather. It will still be clear at the coast and not unbearably hot in the desert yet. Mountain passes may still be closed because of snow, limiting the places you can cross them. The ski resorts will be hoping for it to linger, and if it does, late spring skiing can be fun.

Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle is open year round, but in the spring, they host special evening tours . Visitors get a chance to see the castle lit up as if for a big, fancy party. Docents dress in period costume and pose as guests. Those tours are the best way to see the castle looking like it might have when Mr. Hearst lived there.

Besides all that, spring weather brings clear skies, and your view of the ocean from the hilltop will be less fog-filled than during the summer. You can also get a jump on summer crowds by going earlier in the year. ​

Palm Springs

If you feel like a quick trip to Palm Springs but don't like 100-plus-degree weather, go in the spring, or you'll be waiting for a long time for it to cool down. For most people, it gets too hot by June, and it won't cool down again until November. 

Weather is gorgeous in the spring, with sunny skies and warm days. Except for spring break, it's less busy than in the middle of the winter. And in a perfect year, you might even catch the wildflowers blooming in the desert nearby. 

San Francisco

Spring is one of the best times to go to San Francisco. In fact, it's perhaps the best time to go during the entire year.

By March or April, winter rains will be over, and San Francisco's legendary fog won't roll in for another month or two. The weather will be lovely, with blue skies and comfortable temperatures.

Tourist spots are less crowded than in the summer, too. That makes it easier to get around and gives you more room to enjoy them.

Valley of the Oaks

Very few people know about the Valley of the Oaks. In part, that's because it's a made-up name for the area. But even if you say you're going to Jolon or Fort Hunter Liggett or Mission San Antonio de Padua — or even William Randolph Hearst's Ranch, few people will know what you're talking about.

That's too bad because this remote and little-visited valley near King City has a romantic-looking old Spanish mission and Mr. Hearst's ranch house (which is now a hotel).

And it also boasts some great wildflower displays which reach their peak in the spring.

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite is glorious the spring. In fact, it's gorgeous any time of year, but especially when the high Sierra snowpack starts melting and Yosemite's waterfalls put on their best show. In a wet year, you can hear the roar of Yosemite Falls all over the valley.

The gorgeous mountain dogwood trees bloom then, too but you don't overlook these other great things to do in Yosemite in the spring .

And you can get there before the place gets packed with summer crowds. 

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park south of Palm Springs is one of California's top places to see the desert in bloom. Their peak season stars in January or February and lasts through March or April. 

Your best bet to catch the flowers at their peak is to check their website or call the wildflower hotline at 760-767-4684.

Napa Valley

 Napa Valley is fun to visit in the spring before it gets overrun with summer visitors. You can enjoy food and music festivals, take photos of the blooming yellow mustard, or test your fitness by running a marathon.

Places to See Meteor Showers in the Spring

A meteor shower is a little bit like Mother Nature's fireworks. It happens when the earth passes through a lot of space debris. The meteors form when those rocks from outer space burn up while passing through the atmosphere.

The Lyrids meteor shower occurs in mid-April. It tends to come in a burst and usually lasts for less than a day, which makes it uber-important to  check the exact dates for this year . The brighter the moon is, the fewer of them you'll be able to see. To find out the moon's phase, use the website Sunrise Sunset .

Some of the best places to see it are  Death Valley ,  Big Sur ,  Mendocino , and locations along  Scenic Highway 395 .

March is a beautiful time of year in Northern California — right now look for spring blooms on the trees, especially magnolia, stone fruit, and almond trees all across the region, and the last of the yellow fields of mustard in the wine country. What is the weather like in March in Northern California?

March can be such a fickle time of year. One day it’s sunny and warm, and the next it’s stormy and rainy again. But after yet another fairly dry February, we’re crossing our fingers for some much-needed rain. Expect cool temperatures in the mornings and in the 60s and 70s in the afternoons. When a storm is passing through, it can be cold, rainy and windy. When the weather is clear, this is a wonderful time to be on the coast. 

Is Northern California crowded in March?

In most places, no. When it’s not raining, this is an excellent time of year to get out! Try some of the great outdoor activities: one of the many beautiful hiking trails, going whale watching at Bodega Head , a beach day in Half Moon Bay , or a walking tour of the murals in Midtown Sacramento. Wildflowers are starting to bloom (except in the mountains), and the wine country still has the brilliant yellow blooms of mustard. 

What to do in Northern California in March:

North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve

This is the place to hike in spring in Northern California! Bring a picnic and plenty of water so you can soak up the views of the waterfalls and wildflowers at this unique place just north of Oroville, about 90 minutes from Sacramento. Leashed dogs are welcome! Read about the North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve hike .

When: Anytime but note that parking can get scarce on weekends after 9 am

Where: 7 miles north of Oroville

Deer Creek Hills Preserve hikes

This nature preserve east of Sacramento has 3 hikes to choose from: 3 miles, 4.5 miles, and 6 miles (although the 6 mile trail was not given as an option at our recent visit). You could also combine the 3 and 4.5 mile loops for a longer hike. We love this hike for the oak trees and woodpeckers, the peaceful atmosphere, and the relatively quiet trails.

Note that advance reservations must be made online and that the preserve is open on Saturdays 9-1 only. Try to arrive early to maximize your time and avoid the heat of the sun.

Where: 45 minutes east of Sacramento near Sloughouse

When: Saturdays 9:00-1:00 February-May

Cost: $10 per adult

Barrel Tasting Weekends in Sonoma County

Wine tasting in Northern California is always a good idea, but Sonoma County winemakers are offering something extra special with these barrel tasting experiences. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn directly from winemakers about their winemaking process, sample wine from the barrels and perhaps taste some limited-production wines. 

Where: Various locations in Sonoma County

When: March 2-3, 2024

Cost: Tickets start at $75. Book ahead because they often sell out.

Whale watching:

Winter is the time to witness migrating whales in the water just off the coast of Northern California. Every year approximately 20,000 gray whales make the long journey between Alaska and Mexico and back. Try walking at Bodega Head (the cliffs at Bodega Bay ) or the lighthouse at Point Reyes National Seashore for the best chances to see whales. At both locations, docents keep track of whale sightings and are available to answer questions.

You can also try a boat tour to see whales in the Mendocino, San Francisco and Monterey areas. Try Fast Raft in Monterey for a small group experience.

Where: anywhere along the coast, but get high up on cliffs for the best views. Point Reyes is especially known for whale watching because the peninsula sticks so far out in the sea, but if you’re looking for views from shore, the guides claim that you should come back around Mother’s Day when the moms and calves swim close to shore.

When: now through May

Cost: free, unless you book a whale watching boat tour

18th Annual Artisan Cheese Festival

Normally this weekend of all things cheese is filled with cheese tastings and pairings, farm tours, chef demos, educational sessions with industry experts, and a cheese monger and chef competition. Meet the cheesemakers, authors and celebrity chefs. Sample and buy artisan products; taste beer, wine, cider and spirits … plus so much more in one of my favorite corners of Northern California.

Where: Sonoma County Event Center, Santa Rosa

When: March 22-24, 2024

Cost: tickets start at $75

See young elephant seals (highly recommended!):

Through March 31, you can watch young elephant seals in their natural habitat at  Año Nuevo State Park on the coast between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz. Visitors must take a guided tour. Find out more about how to see elephant seals in California .

Where: Año Nuevo State Park

When: Daily

Cost: $10 for the park day use fee, $7.00 for the tour + $3.99 reservation fee. Kids 3 and under are free.

Seasonal spring events at Pennyroyal Farm, Anderson Valley

At this goat farm and winery known for its wine and cheeses, enjoy a pre-fixe tasting menu featuring a flight of estate wines paired with farmstead bites. Like any good California farm, this one will feature bites that emphasize the seasonality of their ingredients picked fresh from the farm, handmade cheese, and farm-raised meats. Farm tours and other events are also available. See events and reserve your spot here .

When: Various dates, March 2024

Cost: Start at $25 per person

Penguins + Pajamas Sleepover

This family event is offered a few times a year at the amazing California Academy of Sciences museum in San Francisco. This February, families can experience the museum in a totally new way with special access to exhibits and the Rainforest, a live animal presentation, and a special planetarium show before sleeping in an exhibit area. Admission includes parking, an evening snack and morning breakfast, and entry to the museum the following day. More info here .

When: Friday and Saturday evenings March-June

Cost: $119 per person for members, $132 for non-members

Sonoma International Film Festival

After my recent visit to Sonoma, this film festival would normally be on my wish list for what to do in Northern California in March, partly for the films, partly for the historic venues, and partly for the idyllic wine country location. 

The Sonoma International Film Festival was recently included on MovieMaker Magazine’s list of the 25 coolest film festivals in the world. Featuring more than 100 films representing more than 30 countries, the festival also includes tribute guests, special events, and parties, and best of all, it’s located in the food and wine heart of California.

Where: Sonoma (all film venues are within walking distance of the historic downtown plaza)

When: March 20-24, 2024

Cost: This festival usually runs about $175 for a pass but some individual events can be attended for $10.

Bird Walk at Heritage Oak Winery in Lodi

I love that this winery has trails for hiking and bird watching. One Saturday a month a local birding expert leads a bird walk through vineyards and along the Mokelumne River. Best Places To Visit in California

Golden gate bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the symbols of San Francisco. When the Golden Gate was completed in 1937, it was the longest suspension bridge globally. The bridge stretches out over 1.7 miles long and has a height of about 350 feet from the water to the top of the cable. The bridge is so iconic that it has been featured in many movies and television shows, including Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, released in 1958.

One of the most popular places to see it is Alcatraz Island, which is accessed by a ferry that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is one of the best places to visit because it offers a unique view of the bridge, almost surreal.

Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle is one of the most beautiful castles in America. It is one of the most visited monuments in California and among the top ten largest private homes in America. It was originally owned by William Randolph Hearst, who gave 24 different tours to visitors through his castle.

The castle was built by William Randolph Hearst’s parents, who wanted to live in extravagant style. The Hearst family also owned a few other castles and palaces before they began construction on this one but died before they could see it completed.

Pacific Coast Highway

If you love to absorb the natural beauty of nature, then a drive along the Pacific Coast Highway should be on your list of places to visit in California in Sept. 2022.

The coast is always beautiful no matter the time of the year, and there are so many different things to see along this road, from lush mountains and redwood forests to seascapes and rolling waves. You can either choose to take a coastal route or cross through various towns along the way, such as San Luis Obispo or Santa Barbara.

Redwood National Park

One of the most beautiful fall foliage displays in California can be found at Redwood National Park /Forest in Northern California, one of the most beautiful natural areas in California.

In October, the area is transformed into a painting of red, orange and yellow leaves among the giant redwood trees.

Also, by October, most of the large and busy crowds of summer have returned home.

Sequoia national parks

Sequoia National Park is located about four hours northeast of Los Angeles in central California at the base of the Sierra Nevadas. Bear in mind that the road only accesses a small portion of the park, so you’ll have to take a hike to truly appreciate it!

Sequoia National Park offers breathtaking beauty, a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities, and the chance to wander among the largest trees in the world, the giant sequoias.

Although the redwoods are taller, the giant sequoias win in terms of sheer mass. The statistics of General Sherman, for example, are impressive: it stands 275 feet tall with a trunk that measures more than 36 feet in circumference at the base! It is thought to be about 2,200 years old.

You can stroll around the observation area and get a close look at its massive presence.

The Giant Forest Museum, located in the historic Giant Forest Market building, is well worth a visit. The museum is in fact a great place to start your journey into the Giant Forest.

California is much more than the consistent smoggy heat of Los Angeles and the foggy crispness of San Francisco. The state occupies nearly 164,000 square miles, where you'll find everything from dry deserts and pristine beaches to snowy mountaintops and humid swamps. And, in some parts of California, you can even experience four distinct seasons . Visitors looking for a warm California vacation in March can easily make it happen, but not without a little research. Here are the Golden State's warmest cities in March, separated by region.

Northern California

Starting with the warmest, the warmest cities in Northern California in March are:

• Porterville, with an average high of 71 degrees F
• Modesto, with an average high of 69 degrees F
• Fresno, Merced, Stockton and Vacaville, tied, with an average high of 68 degrees F

All of these cities stretch along California's Central Valley, which runs through Redding , Sacramento, Fresno and Bakersfield. The area is inland, so you won't find any beaches here. It's the state's most-productive agricultural region, producing more than half of the United States' fruits, vegetables and nuts. It's also one of the hottest and driest, with a semi-arid desert climate in its southern end.

Fresno is the largest of the cities listed, with more than half a million residents. It's home to seven sports stadiums and two arenas, the annual Woodward Shakespeare Festival and California State University, Fresno, giving visitors options for activities while they're there. But agriculture is the city's most distinct quality, as displayed on its 62-mile Blossom Trail and the Fresno County Fruit Trail.

Southern California

The hottest cities in Southern California during March are:

When planning a California vacation in March, be sure a National Park or two are on the list! Due to the varied climates and weather around the state, visiting National Parks in California during the month of March can be different depending on the location.

We asked our travel friends to share their tips, things to do, and experiences for planning a March vacation to the nine California National Parks… and one National Monument!

Channel Islands National Park in March

Off of the Southern California coast, there are a string of 8 islands that make up Channel Islands National Park . Commonly referred to as the ‘Galapagos of North America’, the Channel Islands come alive during the spring.

March will probably be rainy, but you’ll still enjoy temperate weather and can enjoy the wildflowers in full bloom.

You’ll need a ferry reservation to get to there, we recommend Island Packers . There is no additional fee to enter Channel Islands, it is included in the cost of your ferry ticket.

Watch for dolphins or even whales on the ferry ride over! The other wildlife you might see include pelicans, peregrine falcons, bald eagles, and harbor seals.

Santa Cruz Island and Anacapa Island are the two most popular and easily accessible islands. Santa Cruz Island is larger and offers more hiking trails. You can enjoy kayaking into sea caves from both islands.

Death Valley National Park in March

Death Valley National Park is known for the lowest point in North America as well as the hottest place on the earth with temp that goes up to 134 °F in summer! Though you can visit the valley year-round, March is the perfect time to visit it. It is a perfect month as the season in the valley changes from Winter to Spring! If you want to avoid the crowds, March is a seemingly less crowded month to visit this US Southwest National Park ! You will not see many tourists around and plenty of places to yourself only! Also, the accommodations will be cheaper!

If you are planning to hike or two, March offers the best weather. You can avoid the heat, making it the perfect time for outdoor adventures.

Death Valley is divided into north and south! If you want to cover the major sightseeing places, two days in Death Valley is highly recommended. You can visit the famous Bad water Basin (Lowest Point in North America), Dante’s view, Zabriskie Point, Artist’s Palette, and Mesquite Sand dunes for stunning views.

You can also opt hiking Golden Canyon for stunning rock formations or twenty Mule Team. If you have more time, you can squeeze in visiting Rhyolite Ghost town and Harmony Borax works!

Joshua Tree National Park in March

Joshua Tree is one of the best National Parks to visit in California in March. What’s cool about visiting Joshua Tree National Park , no matter what time of year you choose to visit, is that it’s split between two deserts – the Mojave Desert and the Colorado Desert.

Even though Joshua Tree has plenty of epic glamping and campsites, it’s only a 45-minute drive from Palm Springs , which has more hotel and dining options. If you plan to explore Joshua Tree, having your own vehicle or a rental car is best.

March is the ideal month to plan a spring vacation in the Southwest . Visiting Joshua Tree National Park in March you’ll enjoy perfect weather for desert hiking. You can experience average highs in the mid 70s°F to lows in the lower 40s°F. It barely rains in Joshua Tree during early spring, which draws more crowds.

It’s important to note that Joshua Tree National Park doesn’t require advanced reservations to enter. However, you can purchase a pass upon arrival, which will be valid for seven days. Joshua Tree also accepts the America the Beautiful Pass!

If you plan to camp in Joshua Tree National Park, it’s first-come-first-serve; however, springtime is popular for tourists to visit this area, so reservations are encouraged. You will also need a permit if you plan to backpack and stay overnight, host a special event, hold a specific educational program, and do research.  

Some of the best things to do at Joshua Tree National Park are hiking at Arch Rock, seeing the Cholla Cactus Garden, checking out Skull Rock, and watching the sunset at Cap Rock. Lassen Volcanic National Park in March

Spring at Lassen Volcanic National Park means fewer crowds but a higher level of flexibility on your part. The park gets snow into June some seasons, which means some of the park may only be accessible on foot. The weather in this part of the state fluctuates a lot, though. You may see temperatures in the 70s but snowpack underfoot. Watch the weather and come prepared for both!

If you don’t mind snow, a visit in early spring can mean opportunities for sledding, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing among some of the most beautiful vistas in California .

Feel the warmth of steaming vents at Sulphur Works year-round. If you’re here mid-spring, get your hikes in on lower-elevation trails at Manzanita Lake. Enjoy the wildflowers and scenic views along Lanes Valley Road, a plowed area that passes through those lower elevations.

Muir Woods National Monument in March

Due to the lower crowds, March is a fantastic time to visit Muir Woods National Monument . Many tourists gravitate to the area in the warmer months when school is out. The weather in March is nice, crisp, and cool, but not too cold. Temperatures range from lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s. Pack layers as the weather does vary. 

Muir Woods is known for their majestic redwoods. In the park, guests can explore 6 miles of trails. Three different hiking loops vary in time, so there’s something for guests of all ages. Children can complete the Muir Woods Junior Ranger Activity Book. 

Children 15 and under are free, while 16 and older requires an entry fee. All vehicles need a reservation to enter, so please make sure to plan accordingly, especially if visiting on a weekend or during a busy time. 

The Muir Woods Shuttle begins in mid-March and carries visitors from off-site parking. Tickets are a small fee for guests 16 and older, while 15 and under are free. You need reservations for the arrival and departure ride, so don’t forget to make both! As a side note, there is no wifi or cell phone service in the park, so download your tickets before you arrive. Pinnacles National Park in March

Pinnacles National Park is a relatively new national park in California. In fact, up until 2013, Pinnacles was a national monument, not a park. 

The unique geological rock formations are known to climbers all around, but the park isn’t just for climbers. There are many hikes in the park ranging from easy hikes to full day adventures. 

March is the perfect time to visit Pinnacles for fewer crowds and more moderate temperatures with the heat coming off the rocks on most hikes!

While all the hikes in Pinnacles are pretty awesome, there’s one you just can’t miss – the Balconies Cave Trail. This trail takes you though a cave where you’ll hike over and under boulders, climb stairs made out of rocks, and even over a small creek if the water is flowing. This trail is accessible from both entrances, and you must bring a flashlight to be able to light up the way through the cave! (Recommended by Heather, ArboursAbroad)

Redwood National Park in March

One of the best national parks in California to visit in March is the Redwoods . It covers almost one-third of the northern part of California.

March is a great time to visit because you will have fewer crowds compared to the summer months. The weather is pretty consistent in the Redwoods year round with March being around 61 degrees. 

If you are visiting the Redwoods for the first time it is important to note that it is unlike most national parks. It is so big that there are multiple ranger stations throughout northern California. The Redwoods also comprise of 3 state parks and 1 national park. 

The best Redwood tree groves are Stout Grove, Lady Bird Johnson Grove, and Tall Tree Grove. This is where you will see the older larger trees. They are amazing and worth visiting first. There are many places to hike around and enjoy the groves. Fern Canyon is another great Redwood hiking area. 

You will also want to take some time and make sure you drive through the famous Redwood tree near Klamath. It is so much fun! 

Redwood National Park also has coastal beach areas where you can see wildlife and sea life. Tide pools are common along this coast. The Redwood National Park is amazing and one of the best parks in California! (Recommended by Lisa, Planningaway)

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park in March

Visit two national parks in one at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park . They are both filled with magnificent trees! In March, you can expect snow on the ground with heavy snowfall possible. The average high temperature in March for the Sequoia groves is 46°F/8°C and the low is 26°F/-3°C.

The Generals Highway, the main thoroughfare between Sequoia and Kings Canyon, is unplowed from January to mid-March and often closes due to snow, so it’s a good idea to check road conditions before you head out.

Reservations are not required to enter the parks, but you’ll need one for most of the campsites. Wilderness permits are free in March, self-issued, and don’t require a reservation.

Visit the General Sherman tree, the world’s largest tree by volume. It’s 275 feet (83m) tall and over 36 ft (11m) in diameter. The General Sherman trail is very short at .5 m (.8km) and draws a crowd. It has a few stairs, but there’s also a wheelchair-accessible trail.

Near the General Sherman trail is the Congress Trail, a 2.7 mile paved trail, where you can see the House and the Senate tree groups and the President tree. Stroll through the Big Trees Trail, a 1 mile (1.6km) loop with informational exhibits.

Visit the General Grant tree, the world’s second largest tree, located in Kings Canyon. The trail is a 1/3 mile (.5km) paved loop. (Recommended by Natalie, Outsider Odyssey )

Yosemite National Park in March

Whilst still technically winter, March brings the first hints of spring to Yosemite National Park and with it, some of the most breathtaking scenery in California.

March is possibly the best month to visit Yosemite if you want to avoid crowds and have the highest chance of observing some of the parks more elusive animals such as the Sierra Nevada Red Fox, the Mountain Lion and dozens of species of birds and rodents.

The low sun and plentiful snow make for a photographers paradise and whilst some of the roads will be closed, there is plenty to explore on those that are not. With your camera gear ready, be sure to stop and capture the incredible vista of El Capitan, Half Dome and Bridalveil Falls from the Tunnel Overlook.

A short hike from the road will take you to the Mariposa Grove with its snow-dusted giant sequoias towering majestically into the air. A pair of snow-shoes are a must for any off-road hiking and are well worth the investment.

Before entering the park you should check on the official National Park Service website for any reservation or permit requirements. These do change regularly and you may be refused entry if you haven’t booked ahead. (Recommended by Tom & Katie, Trekking The Dream !)

California is on the West Coast and the third largest state in the union. It has great historical significance and is one of the most pleasant states to visit. National parks like Sequoia are popular, there are several professional sports teams, and Anaheim is home to Disneyland.

There are many beautiful towns to visit too. These eleven towns are breathtaking in their natural beauty, architecture, and stunning views. Let's explore what makes each one special and why they should be on your travel itinerary.

Avalon is on the small island of Catalina, one of California's prettiest coastal areas. This picturesque, charming town is only accessible by boat or helicopter, and a ferry service runs daily from Avalon Bay to the mainland. Across from the ferry terminal are two popular hotels, the Pavillion and the Atwater, each providing private transportation.

Crescent Avenue, known by residents as Front Street, is the de facto Main Street that runs along the bay. Here, you can discover the architectural gems of The Serpentine Wall and the Wrigley Fountain, each with genuine Catalina tile. Carmel By The Sea

Bishop is a remote mountain town in northern California that looks straight out of a movie set. It is popular among outdoor enthusiasts for its camping, natural beauty, and stunning mountain peaks that rise to over 14,000 feet. Bishop is also known for its mules, and every Memorial Day, it hosts the world's longest non-motorized parade on Main Street.

Another unique feature is that the Sierra Nevada and White Mountain ranges that shadow Bishop give the appearance of a small town with a big yard. Laws Railroad Museum & Historic Site is a unique museum at Laws Station with an 1883 depot and other historical buildings. This is a unique town; its natural beauty and charm make it remarkable.

Sausalito is across the Golden Gate Strait from San Francisco , and the bridge is just one reason to visit. The Richardson Bay houseboats, built by local tenants after World War Two, are a popular attraction. There are also museums here, like the Bay Area Discovery and the Ice House, that are pleasant ways to spend an afternoon.

The Marin Headlands is a free Golden Gate National Recreation Area park and a great way to view the historic bridge. St. Helena is located in classic Napa County, 17 miles from Napa Valley, and is popular for its many vineyards and wineries. The 1881 Napa Wine History Museum is a fascinating way to explore the region's history and learn about local wineries. The museum is in one of the oldest Victorian homes in the area and has a stunning array of winemaking relics.

The Napa Valley Wine Train is a classy way to explore the valley while enjoying fine dining and wine. St. Helena is a gourmand's dream trip. The Culinary Institute of America has a campus here, a converted 19th-century wine cellar called Greystone. There are quite a few art galleries like the AERENA that elevate the charm and stunning scenery of the wine country.

Solvang is a Danish community known for its traditional Dutch architecture, including a windmill downtown. The Danish heritage of Solvang can be discovered at the Elverhøj Museum of History & Art. Copenhagen Drive is the main road through the walkable downtown, and you will find wine cellars intermingled with European bakeries.

There is a diverse range of museums, from the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum to a Viking museum. Other indoor activities include a tour of the 19 wine rooms. There are also thrilling outdoor activities like a trip to Ostrichland, a rented Jeep ride through the area's rolling hills, or exploring the original 21 California Missions with views of the Santa Ynez River.

Ojai is a small village set in a valley in the Topatopa Mountains with a pleasant aesthetic and walkable downtown. Exploring Ojai on foot is the most popular way to experience the classic California architecture and shops. The Ojai Valley Museum is perfect for those wanting to learn about local history through tours and exhibits.

Ojai prides itself on being a relaxing place, and one of the best ways to do this is at Beacon Coffee, one of the best in town. Ojai Meadow Preserve is 58 acres of nature and hiking trails. It also has over 40 species of birds, so make sure to pack a bird identification guide.

Sonoma is a historic town in the famous wine-making region of Sonoma Valley. The center of town is the colonial-era Plaza, surrounded by 19th-century adobe buildings. The natural scenery includes 55 miles of coastline, and this dignified town has famous vineyards and exquisite dining options. Sonoma has long been revered as the birthplace of California wine, with over 100 vineyards. Wineries like La Prenda Wines, right next to Historic Sonoma Square, offer educational wine tasting. Sonoma is beautiful and elegant, with natural beauty and beautiful vineyards as far as the eye can see.

Julian is a charming town in the Cuyamaca Mountains. It is known for its delicious apple pies and cider. The town is pedestrian-friendly and has Victorian architecture, natural attractions like hiking trails, and a bucolic aesthetic.

Autumn is the most popular time to visit due to the Julian Fall Apple Harvest, held from mid-September to November since 1909. Historic Main Street is popular among shoppers and antique hunters and includes Julian Station. It is a mall boasting stores and cider-tasting rooms. Julian had a big role during the Gold Rush, and the Eagle and High Peak Gold Mines offer tours and lessons in panning for gold.

Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach is a coastal town renowned for its numerous art galleries and world-class beaches. Main Beach is family-friendly, with tidal pools and a boardwalk leading to Heisler Park. Aliso Beach Park is a famous Pacific Coast Highway surfing destination.

These beaches are probably what you think of when you think of California-crashing surf and seven miles of beach access. There are also 22,000 acres of nature preserves, such as the Nix Nature Center and the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park Nix Nature Center. Laguna College of Art and Design lends the town an artsy vibe, and downtown has long been a haven for artists and writers.

Pacific Grove

Pacific Grove is an idyllic town between Monterrey and Pinos. A main attraction is the historic Point Pinow lighthouse, built in 1855 and the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast. Lovers Point Park is a quaint park and one of four marine protected areas.

The Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary is a charming sanctuary with eucalyptus and pine trees, perfect for a stroll on a warm day. For another butterfly attraction, visit the Pacific Grove Butterfly House. The house is painted in vibrant colors due to the homeowner's eye disease. Virtually every visitor sees the house at least once, and it has become a town trademark of bright colors.

Today I want to bring you my guide to the best places to visit in California in spring. If you’re wondering where to travel in March, April, and May, the Golden State has no shortage of exciting seasonal destinations for you. From sunny beaches to spring skiing, spots to see a floral superbloom, and great cities, there’s something for everyone here. Read on for my top picks. I’ve included a map of all the places on my list, too.

Best Places to Visit in California in Spring

As a born-and-raised Californian, I’ve been to a lot of the best places to visit in spring in this part of the US. From family ski trips to Lake Tahoe to excursions to the flower fields in Carlsbad, I’ve covered a lot of ground.

Which is how I know there’s a vacation for every type of traveler here. Whether you’re seeking spring sunshine in Santa Barbara or fun adventures in national parks like Yosemite, the Golden State offers residents and out-of-state visitors a variety of places to travel in the shoulder season between winter and summer.

My list includes ideas for the top places for spring break in California , destinations to visit over holidays like St Patrick’s Day, Easter, and Cinco de Mayo, the best Memorial Day weekend getaways in California , and other all-around great places to travel in the spring.

Tips for Spring Travel in California

Before choosing where to visit in California in spring, keep in mind that some places can get crowded over the school vacation dates. This is particularly true when it comes to beaches, cities, ski resorts, theme parks, and other sites that are popular with families and college students during spring break.

As such, it’s advisable to make reservations for things like accommodation as far in advance as you can. You’ll have a better chance of finding lower rates and having a wider selection of properties to choose from. You can see options and book a place to stay here .

The same goes for popular theme parks and big attractions. If you’re planning to go somewhere like Disneyland, Legoland California Resort , or Universal Studios Hollywood, booking tickets early can ensure you get to visit on your desired dates.

1. Palm Springs

At the top of my list of the best places to visit in California in spring is Palm Springs. This desert region is the perfect seasonal travel destination due to its warm climate and variety of events, festivals, and activities on offer.

If you visit Palm Springs early in the season, you can head to the BNP Paribas Open in Coachella Valley. The tournament takes place every year at the beginning of March at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. It’s the largest combined ATP Tour and WTA Tour two-week event in the world.

If you travel to Palm Springs in April, you can get tickets for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Coachella is one of the best-known events of its kind in the world, and it features chart-topping artists and big-name performers every year.

Spring is also an ideal time to cool off at places like HyTides Water Park at the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa and Splashtopia at the Omni Rancho Las Palmas in Rancho Mirage. They’re fun family destinations that will help keep kids of all ages cool on hot days.

As if that’s not enough, Palm Springs is home to excellent restaurants, top-rated golf courses, mid-century modern architecture, and the largest rotating  aerial tramway  in the world. Spring is the perfect time to enjoy them, as summers in the desert are very hot.

2. California Superbloom Destinations

The superbloom destinations come next on my list of the best places to visit in California in spring. In years when there are particularly wet winters, the Golden State experiences a phenomenon where lots of wildflowers bloom at the same time in the spring. The result is a riot of color that attracts visitors and locals alike.

The good news is that you can see the superbloom in many parts of California. Wherever you are, you’re probably not far from a gorgeous blanket of poppies or other botanical wonders.

Popular places to see the California superbloom include the Mojave Desert and Antelope Valley, Lake Elsinore, Joshua Tree, Carrizo Plain National Monument, Napa Valley , and other destinations.

My top pick for where you can see the superbloom is Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. In years when there’s enough well-timed winter rain, this place erupts with one of the most spectacular wildflower blooms in the country.

Purple sand verbena, golden poppies, and yellow desert sunflowers blanket the landscape in Anza-Borrego and attract visitors from all over the world. There’s even a wildflower hotline you can call for updates.

3. San Diego

San Diego is another of my top picks for places to visit in California in spring. With sunny weather, world-class beaches, and fun attractions and nightlife, this beach city in SoCal is an ideal place for all types of travelers.

If you’re visiting with children, San Diego is a great family vacation destination. From Del Mar to La Jolla and beyond, there are beaches for playing, surfing, and stand-up paddle boarding. Legoland in Carlsbad is popular with kids, too.

If you’re looking for something more grown up, you can have fun paragliding in Torrey Pines, shopping in Del Mar, doing a bar crawl in the historic Gaslamp Quarter, or partying in Pacific Beach.

There are great attractions for kids of all ages, too. The San Diego Zoo is world famous, Balboa Park is beautiful, and Cabrillo National Monument is full of history (and tide pools!). Visitors can also tour the USS Midway , go on a harbor cruise , go whale watching (depending when you’re here), and tuck into delicious Mexican food.

But one of the best things to do here in spring is visit the famous Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch. You can meander through 50 acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus blooms each year in March, April, and May. It’s the perfect spot for nature lovers and social media influencers alike.

4. Lake Tahoe

Next on my list of the best places to visit in California in spring is Lake Tahoe. My family had a place here when I was growing up, and it remains one of my all-time favorite spots for spring skiing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

This part of the Golden State is popular for activities like skiing and snowboarding in years when there’s good snow throughout the winter. From Heavenly to Northstar, Palisades, and beyond, there are plenty of resorts where you can get on the slopes in Tahoe in the springtime. If you’re visiting as a family, there are lots of ski schools for kids, too.

If you’re willing to travel a bit farther, Kirkwood has always been one of my favorite places to ski in this part of California. Just keep in mind that spring (especially spring break) can be a busy time on the slopes in Tahoe in years when there’s heavy snowfall.

There’s plenty to keep you busy in Tahoe beyond the slopes, too. You can enjoy winter activities like sledding, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Tahoe is home to one of the largest concentrations of cross-country ski areas in North America, and it’s a great thing to learn while you’re here.

Beyond the outdoors, Lake Tahoe has a lot to offer visitors in spring. From the shops and restaurants in Heavenly Village and Truckee to the fun apres ski bars in Tahoe City, there’s something for every type of visitor. My itinerary for 4 days in Lake Tahoe has more ideas, too.

5. Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is another of my favorite places to visit in California in spring. This coastal city in Southern California is known for its mild weather, beautiful beaches, shopping, wine tasting, and luxury hotels . There’s great food and plenty of sightseeing to do here, too.

There’s a lot going on in Santa Barbara in spring as well. This is a year-round destination, and you can enjoy everything from the downtown and coastal highlights to the inland areas. Whether you want to go to the beach, visit museums and cultural attractions, cycle, or head out to the Channel Islands National Park, you have plenty of options.

And that’s to say nothing of the seafood restaurants on Stearns Wharf, the tasting rooms along the Urban Wine Trail, the murals in the Funk Zone, the delicious stalls in the Santa Barbara Public Market, the mission, and the shops. My 2-day itinerary for Santa Barbara can show you the highlights.

There’s a lot you can do on the water, too. From parasailing to surfing, sailing, kayaking, and whale watching, there are plenty of things to get excited about.

And that’s to say nothing of the rest of Santa Barbara County. From the beaches in Goleta to the shopping in Montecito, the wine tasting in the Santa Rita Hills, the old stagecoach stop at Cold Spring Tavern , and the one-of-a-kind Danish town of Solvang, there’s no shortage of places to visit here.

6. Disneyland

Disneyland is next on my list of the top places to visit in California in spring. The Magic Kingdom and California Adventure shine all throughout the year, and spring can be a good time to visit because crowds can be fewer (if you avoid spring break) and temperatures lower than in the summer months.

The neighboring theme parks offer a lot of unique seasonal entertainment, special events, and fun activities during the spring, too.

From the annual Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival to Easter-themed specials like the family-friendly Eggstravaganza scavenger hunt, there are a lot of reasons to visit the park at this time of year.

And that’s to say nothing of Star Wars: Season of the Force, Dapper Day, Pixar Fest, and Disneyland After Dark events. There are dedicated performances and shows on throughout the spring, too.

Even if your visit doesn’t coincide with the seasonal events, you can still have a great time visiting in March, April, and May. The parks are fun year-round, and this is called the Happiest Place on Earth for a reason.

7. San Francisco

San Francisco is another of my favorite places to visit in California in spring. The City by the Bay is a great vacation spot at this time of year, not least because the weather can be drier than in winter and sunnier and warmer than in summer.

There’s a lot you can do in San Francisco in the springtime, too. The city’s parks and green spaces will be in bloom. Everything from the seasonal tulips in the Queen Wilhelmina Garden to the cherry blossoms in the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park is worth seeing.

There are special events and festivals going on in San Francisco in spring, too. From the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival in Japantown to the St Patrick’s Day parade, Union Street Spring Celebration and Easter Parade, Cinco de Mayo, Giants baseball games, and the unique Bay to Breakers road race, you have a lot to choose from.

Even if you miss the events, San Francisco is a fun spring trip. The tourist crowds can be less intense in popular areas like Fisherman’s Wharf, and it can be easier to get tickets for sell-out attractions like Alcatraz . You can also take a day trip while you’re visiting if you want to. From Yosemite National Park to Sausalito, Napa , Muir Woods, and Sonoma , there are plenty of great day trips from San Francisco to choose from.

8. Monterey County & Santa Cruz County

Monterey County and Santa Cruz County are two more of the best places to visit in California in the springtime. I came here all the time for weekend getaways when I was growing up, and I still love traveling to this part of the Central Coast.

Monterey and Santa Cruz are great in spring because there are fewer crowds than in the busy summer months. The weather can be less foggy, too. Coastal fog is common here in the summer, so going ahead of the peak season can mean more sunshine and warmer temperatures.

My favorite places to visit in this part of the Golden State are Big Sur, Carmel, Monterey , Capitola, and Santa Cruz. Depending how much time you have, you can see them all in one trip.

Monterey is known for the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It’s an ideal place for kids of all ages to learn about marine ecosystems and get up close to everything from sea otters to jellyfish.

You can also go biking by the bay or along 17 Mile Drive, walk around Old Fisherman’s Wharf, try sea kayaking, shop and dine on Cannery Row, or take a whale watching cruise (depending when you visit).

Right by Monterey, Carmel-by-the-Sea is one of the cutest towns in California. From the beaches to the boutiques, restaurants, and thatched-roof cottages, there’s a lot to do and see here. There’s wine tasting in Carmel Valley and stunning natural scenery at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve as well.

Big Sur is famous for its awe-inspiring coastline, from bolder-studded beaches to hiking trails in the redwood trees. It’s perfect if you love nature and outdoor activities. My Big Sur itinerary can give you more ideas for things to do in the area in spring.

Just north of Monterey County, Capitola and Santa Cruz are known for their beaches, too. Santa Cruz is synonymous with surfing, and Capitola is beloved for its colorful waterfront and great shops and restaurants. Families with kids will love Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, an amusement park on the Pacific Ocean.

9. Los Angeles

Back in SoCal, Los Angeles is another of the best spring destinations in California. With warm weather, great beaches, award-winning restaurants, and no shortage of attractions, LA has a lot to entertain.

From the beaches in Malibu and Santa Monica to the nightlife in Venice and the Arts District, there’s a lot to get excited about. And that’s to say nothing of the rooftop bars, clubs, hotel pools, and hip shops and restaurants in Downtown LA.

The city offers much in the way of sightseeing and activities, too. From Griffith Observatory to the Walk of Fame in Hollywood, the rides at Universal Studios, and the Marvin Braude Bike Trail in Manhattan Beach, there’s loads for visitors to enjoy. If you want to get outdoors, LA is a great place for hiking. From Portuguese Bend Reserve in Rancho Palos Verdes to Griffith Park and San Vicente Mountain Park on Mulholland Drive, there are lots of good places to stretch your legs. These trails are great in spring, as the weather can be cooler than in the hot summer months.

Beyond the outdoors, LA has cultural institutions like the Walt Disney Concert Hall, museums like The Getty and The Broad, and shopping streets like Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills and Abbot Kinney in Venice. The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden is particularly pretty in spring, and it hosts seasonal events and exhibitions.

10. Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree is another of my top picks for places to visit in California in spring. This otherworldly part of the state is magical, and there are a lot of options for getting outdoors and into nature while you’re here.

There are lots of benefits to visiting Joshua Tree National Park in spring. First, the weather is milder at this time of year than in the hot summer months (especially in early spring). Mornings and evenings are warmer than they are in the winter as well.

Second, are lots of things to do and see in Joshua Tree in March, April, and May. Hiking is one of the most popular activities in the national park, and there’s a range of trails and routes you can take. They include Ryan Mountain, the Lost Palms Oasis Trail, and the Mastodon Peak Loop Trail.

If you’re interested in other activities, you can go rock climbing, horseback riding, and take guided tours while you’re here. They’re great things to do in spring, not to mention unique ways to experience the best of Joshua Tree National Park.

Just make sure to book things in advance if you plan to visit over spring break. It’s one of the most popular times to visit Joshua Tree, and the park can be crowded. You’ll want to plan ahead to make sure you get to do the things you’re interested in.

11. Catalina Island

Catalina Island is another popular place to visit in California in spring. It’s a great spot to travel to if you enjoy soaking up the sun and island vibes.

As an added bonus, the crowds aren’t as big as they are during the peak summer season, and there can be better deals on everything from accommodation to dining (if you avoid spring break and big events).

There’s a lot you can do and see on Catalina Island in spring, too. From outdoor activities like the Garden to Sky Hike to shopping, spas, dining, adventure tours , museums, and boating, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy your time here in March, April, and May.

Temperatures average around 63 to 66 degrees in spring, and you can still go in the water if you wear a wetsuit (or you’re brave enough to swim in the cool ocean water). Whether you want to go stand-up paddle boarding, snorkeling, or diving, there’s something for everyone.

There are also great seasonal events here in the spring. The annual Catalina Island Marathon takes place in March. It’s a fun one to participate in if you love running and coastal scenery in equal measure.

12. Solvang & Santa Ynez Valley

In Santa Barbara County, Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley make for another great place to visit in California in spring. Situated between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the San Rafael Mountains, this part of the state is known for its excellent wineries, charming towns, and bucolic scenery.

Visiting the Santa Ynez Valley in spring is ideal because the weather is cooler than in the hot summer months, the crowds are fewer, and the wine tasting tours and hotels can be less expensive and easier to book.

There are lots of exciting places to visit in the Santa Ynez Valley in spring. The most popular is Solvang, a Danish-inspired town with whimsical architecture, fun shops, windmills, and a range of places to eat and drink.

There are lots of fun things going on here in spring, too. If you’re a cyclist, the Solvang Century and Solvang Double Century are great bike rides. They take place a few weeks apart, so you can do both if you have time.

If you’re a runner, the Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon goes through the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley and ends with a wine festival in Solvang. If you’re into cars, the Solvang Datsun Roadster Classic is a must.

Other great destinations in the region include Santa Ynez with its attractive shops and restaurants, Los Olivos with its boutiques and tasting rooms, Buellton where parts of the movie Sideways were filmed, Los Alamos, and Ballard. They’re ideal places to go wine tasting and enjoy the restaurants the area is known for.

13. Orange County

Orange County is another of the best places to visit in California in spring. Given its warm weather and abundance of beaches, this part of Southern California is popular with locals and visitors alike. It’s a great spring break destination, too.

There are plenty of fun things to do and cities to check out in Orange County. Whether you go to Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Corona del Mar State Beach Park, or somewhere else, there are plenty of options.

If you visit Laguna Beach, you can explore the tide pools, enjoy a picnic at Treasure Island Park, check out the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, snorkel at Divers Cove, or take in the sunset from Crescent Bay Park.

If you don’t want to spend your whole time at the beach, there are plenty of other things to do here, too. Theme parks like Adventure City in Anaheim are great for families with young children (as is the aforementioned Disneyland).

Knott’s Berry Farm is a fun theme park, too. The annual Boysenberry Festival takes place for over a month each spring, so you can time your visit to coincide with it if you want to. It features boysenberry-themed foods, drinks, live entertainment, and activities.

14. Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is next on my list of the best places to travel in California in spring. One of the most famous places in the Golden State, Yosemite is known for its natural beauty and outdoor activities. Yosemite Valley and Wawona remain accessible by car all year, so you’ll have no problem visiting them at any point in spring.

There’s a lot you can do in Yosemite in March, April, and May, too. Most of the park remains snowy through late spring, but some hikes from the valley, Hetch Hetchy, and Wawona are snow-free by April, and most are snow-free by mid-May.

If it’s really cold, you can spend time indoors at places like The Ansel Adams Gallery to see some of the most iconic photos of Yosemite.

Yosemite’s waterfalls are at their best in May, so if you visit then you’ll be able to see them at their fullest. From Yosemite Falls to Bridalveil Fall, you can admire some of the most famous from the valley floor. My Yosemite itinerary for 4 days can give you more ideas.

As if that’s not enough reason to go, the Mariposa Grove Road usually opens by sometime in April. Even if it doesn’t, you can hike the Washburn Trail, a two-mile route with 500 feet of elevation gain, to get to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. Just be sure to bring appropriate footwear, as the trail can have snow and ice on it.

There’s spring skiing in years when the snow is good, too. Badger Pass is the oldest downhill ski area in California, and I learned how to ski here when I was a child. It’s a fun place for everything from snowboarding to tubing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

15. Paso Robles

Paso Robles is next on my list of the best places to visit in California in spring. This part of the Golden State is known for its olive groves and vineyards. Given its location midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, it’s a popular place to visit on a road trip .

There’s a lot going on in Paso in the spring, too. March is Spring Release for Paso Robles Wine Country. Throughout the month, there are over 100 individual winemaker dinners, seminars, live music events, wine tastings , and specialty tours to choose from.

There are also annual events like At Her Table, Paso Robles Art in the Park, the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival, the Three Speckled Hens Antiques & Old Stuff Show, Warbirds Wings & Wheels, the Paso Robles Olive & Lavender Festival, and Paso Wine Fest.

Beyond events, Paso Robles has a lot going for it. Exploring the downtown area is a fun thing to do, and you can go on hot air balloon rides, scavenger hunts, hikes, and horseback rides, too. You can even soak in mineral hot springs while you’re here.

If you’re into culture and history, you can visit the Paso Robles Pioneer Museum and Estrella Warbird Museum. And if you love art (and all things Instagrammable), Field of Light at Sensorio is an impressive multi-acre walk-through experience you’ll love.

There’s plenty to do and see around Paso Robles as well. Cambria, San Simeon, and Hearst Castle are less than an hour away. And that’s to say nothing of Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, and Avila Beach .

16. Mammoth Lakes

If you’re in Southern California, Mammoth Lakes is another of the best places to visit in California in spring. Mammoth is known for offering a range of outdoor activities. In years when there’s good snow, you can go spring skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, tubing, and all kinds of other adventure sports.

You can also visit the famous mountain lakes in and around Mammoth. From Mono Lake to the bodies of water along the June Lake Loop, they showcase the eastern Sierra Nevada’s natural beauty in all its splendor.

Even in years when the snow isn’t spectacular, there’s plenty to do in Mammoth in spring. In drier years, well-known ghost towns like Bodie are accessible by road from Mammoth Lakes. They’re unique spots to dig into California’s Gold Rush history and see what life was like in this part of the state in times past.

Spring is also a great time to go fishing, take a hike up Sky Meadows Trail or walk around Snowcreek Meadow to see the wildflowers, enjoy mountain biking, or admire the geothermal vents bubbling up in Hot Creek.

There are also annual events like the Pond Skim lake-jumping competition, the Caldera Burn ski mountaineering challenge, and the Easter Parade. The Mammoth Lakes Film Festival takes place each year over Memorial Day weekend, too.

If this sounds like a fun spring getaway, you can fly or drive to Mammoth from Los Angeles and the surrounding areas. The drive takes around 5 hours, depending where you start from and what traffic conditions are like. If you fly to Mammoth, the trip takes 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Through the end of April 2024, Advanced Airlines is offering flights from Hawthorne-LA (HHR) to Mammoth Yosemite Airport (MMH). Flights are on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. There’s a free shuttle from LAX to Hawthorne if you’re flying into LAX first (reserve in advance).

17. Mount Shasta

Another great place to visit in California in spring is Mount Shasta. While the peak season here is June and July, spring is a great time to come to this part of the Golden State for a number of reasons. The first is that the crowds are fewer than during the busy summer season.

The second is that the waterfalls here are amazing to see in late spring. From Burney Falls to McCloud Falls, Faery Falls, Whitney Falls, Ash Creek Falls, and Hedge Creek Falls, they’re great to see when the glacier runoff really gets going.

The third is dependent on the snow. The best time to climb Mount Shasta is usually from May to mid-July when the days are long and the weather is (usually) at its best. But in dry years, thin snowpack creates peak climbing conditions in April, May, and early June.

If you’re going to come here in spring, I recommend aiming for late May. This is particularly true if you’re planning well in advance and you don’t know how the upcoming winter’s snowfall will impact conditions on the mountain.

Regardless of when you visit, you can enjoy things like visiting Stewart Mineral Hot Springs, walking through spring meadows, and hiking on low and mid-elevation trails like the Gateway Trail, along the McCloud River, and in the Castle Crags. The high desert of the Shasta Valley a great place to go, too.

Best places to visit in march 2024.

Traveling in spring certainly has its perks. If you can brave cooler temperatures and the occasional rain shower, you'll likely be rewarded with fewer crowds and lower travel rates in many popular destinations, ranging from palm-fringed beaches to cities big and small. U.S. News considered factors like affordability, things to do, must-visit attractions, overall appeal and more to determine the best places to visit in March. Don't forget to cast your vote below to have a say in next year's ranking.

Iguazu Falls

Cinque terre, vancouver, canada, galapagos islands, big bend national park, luang prabang.

Visiting during Barcelona's shoulder season has its perks, including smaller crowds and lower rates on airfare and accommodations. Plus, average temperatures hover near the low 60s in March, so you won't overheat while exploring must-see sights such as Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter) and Park Güell, a whimsical park designed by Antoni Gaudí. What's more, you can explore other popular Gaudí landmarks like Casa Batlló and Basílica de la Sagrada Família without hordes of tourists blocking your view. When you've worked up an appetite, venture to the quiet Gràcia neighborhood to sample authentic Catalan cuisine on a food tour.

Straddling the border of Argentina and Brazil, Iguazu Falls is one of the largest waterfall systems in the world. While the natural beauty of the falls will take your breath away year-round, travelers who plan a trip in March enjoy the added bonus of fewer crowds, pleasant temperatures and cheaper accommodations. Remember to set aside time in your schedule for Iguazu's most dramatic feature, Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat), a semicircular chasm fed by 14 of Iguazu's waterfalls.

Although March falls within Maui's peak season, its excellent weather (think: average daytime temps in the high 70s and low 80s) and prime conditions for water sports and wildlife viewing make it a superb time to visit. Experienced surfers can head to popular surf spots like Ho'okipa Beach and Pe'ahi (dubbed "Jaws") to hang ten, while beginners stick to the waves at Kaanapali Beach. Meanwhile, animal lovers can look for migrating humpback whales during a whale watching cruise. To save some coin, book your Maui hotel and airfare at least a few months in advance.

These five towns on the Italian Riviera are beautiful any time of year, but there are a few benefits to visiting in March. The cooler weather (think: average temperatures sit in the high 50s) makes it a perfect time to hike Cinque Terre's famous trails, although rain may cause some of the trails to close at times. Additionally, many local shops reopen after closing for winter. Since spring is one of Cinque Terre's shoulder seasons, you'll find fewer tourists this time of year, allowing you to comfortably explore the area on foot or by boat.

March marks the end of Cape Town, South Africa's busy summer season, when temperatures begin to drop and crowds thin out. Tourists who plan a March vacation will be rewarded with cheaper rates and pleasant temps in the mid-70s, perfect for exploring top sights like Table Mountain and Camps Bay Beach. Plus, fall kicks off Cape Town's wine harvest, which makes it a great time to explore the world-renowned Constantia Valley wine region . Many festivals and events are also held throughout the month, including the Cape Town Carnival.

Situated between two of Utah 's five main national parks, Moab is an outdoor adventure hub known for its awe-inspiring red rock formations. Travelers can admire them during visits to Arches National Park (where the world's densest concentration of natural sandstone arches resides) and Canyonlands National Park (which is the largest national park in the state). Travelers who time their trip for the beginning of the month will have the best chance of avoiding crowds while still enjoying comfortable weather in the 50s and 60s. Other must-do March activities include hiking, rock climbing, off-roading and camping.

Whether you're enjoying a show at the Vancouver International Dance Festival or admiring cherry blossoms in Queen Elizabeth Park, there are plenty of reasons to visit Vancouver in March. Spend your time on a walking or biking tour of popular neighborhoods like Granville Island and Yaletown, then ride the Skyride gondola to the top of Grouse Mountain for breathtaking views of the city. March temperatures in this Canadian vacation destination are mild in the low 50s, and although you'll likely experience some rainfall, this is a great time to score big on hotel deals.

The reasons for traveling to this German city in March are multifold. Although you'll have to deal with some chilly weather (average temperatures sit in the high 40s), visiting during this shoulder season means fewer crowds and lower prices. March also brings the city's annual Starkbierfest event, a traditional Bavarian beer festival, and St. Patrick's Day, one of the largest cultural events in Munich. When you're not engaging in the festivities, spend the rest of your time sightseeing at famous attractions like St. Peter's Church and the Munich Residenz, the largest city palace in Germany.

While you can spot wildlife in the Galápagos year-round, March is nesting season for animals like green sea turtles, iguanas and red-footed boobies. Keep an eye out near the water, too, as sea lions are known to hang on the beaches. And though March falls within the wet season (you'll want to bring an umbrella), there should still be ample warm, sunny days to enjoy the beach, particularly toward the end of the month.

Boasting 150-plus miles of hiking trails, Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas appeals to travelers with an affinity for the outdoors. Observe wildlife (including more than 450 species of birds), kayak along the Rio Grande or explore Big Bend while horseback riding. Keep in mind that spring is the park's busiest season, so you won't be the only one admiring the spectacular mountain views. Plan accordingly by allotting extra time for waiting in lines and booking your trip accommodations far in advance.  

One of Cozumel, Mexico's biggest draws is its abundance of aquatic activities. The country's largest Caribbean island is one of the best places to scuba dive thanks to its clear water and proximity to the world's second-largest barrier reef. To get in the water, head to Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park to dive, snorkel or swim with dolphins. If you'd rather stay dry, sign up for a glass-bottom boat tour or lounge on one of the island's white sand beaches. Because March is outside the Atlantic hurricane season, you'll enjoy plenty of warm, dry weather.

While the northern half of the world is entering spring, Southern Hemisphere destinations like Sydney are just beginning their fall season. This means travelers will encounter pleasant weather in March (average temperatures hover in the high 70s) that is perfect for taking in some of Sydney's most iconic landmarks, such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. Other must-do activities include surfing and sunbathing at Bondi Beach and strolling through the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, Australia's oldest botanical garden.

Visit Punta Mita, Mexico, in March if you want to relax while on vacation. This former fishing village in western Mexico's Riviera Nayarit area is now renowned for its opulent resorts, world-class golf courses and beautiful white sand beaches. Punta Mita's warm weather and clear blue water also make it an excellent place to go scuba diving, surfing and Jet Skiing. What's more, March is one of several months when humpback whales migrate through the region, so you'll want to save time for a whale watching excursion.

March falls within this Laotian city's dry season, meaning you can participate in top outdoor activities like climbing Mount Phousi and taking a boat tour to the Pak Ou Caves without the threat of rain. Plus, the warm weather in the 80s and 90s makes cooling off in the turquoise waters of Kuang Si Falls even more enjoyable. No trip to Luang Prabang would be complete without exploring some of the city's ancient Buddhist temples – Wat Xieng Thong and Wat Wisunarat are two can't-miss sites.  

Although March ushers in some of Jamaica's lowest temps, this time of year is by no means cold. Daytime highs comfortably sit in the mid-80s in March, making Jamaica an appealing destination to spring breakers and those in search of a warm-weather holiday. Vacationers can climb to the top of Dunn's River Falls or hike through Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park. Those looking for a more relaxing getaway can lounge on a variety of white sand beaches or unwind at one of the island's luxurious all-inclusive resorts .

In fact, the entire Phoenix-area Valley of the Sun is synonymous with spring via the Cactus League spring training’s packed schedule of Major League Baseball games.

“And, with an average high temperature of 76 degrees Fahrenheit in March, Scottsdale features the perfect weather for a range of other activities as well — from hiking the stunning Pinnacle Peak Park Trail (often bordered by beautiful wildflowers in the spring) to browsing the cool shops in the downtown/Old Town area to golfing the world-class courses to taking a dip in the pool at one of the luxurious resorts.

“Of course, the beauty of springtime in the Valley of the Sun is far from a travel secret, so you’ll have traffic and peak-season hotel prices to deal with. “Escape to this beach city just outside of Los Angeles where most days are in the 70s. March is a lovely time to visit Malibu as the maddening summer traffic and summer people have not arrived yet, so you will get a more local vibe. Due to the heavy rains California received, wildflowers are sure to dot the dramatic hillsides and canyons, making hiking to waterfalls even more breathtaking.

“Watch surfers and sunsets on numerous beaches (Carbon Beach, El Matador, El Pescador) or the Malibu Pier where you may become one with the waves, dolphins, and birds as you’ll find barely a soul in sight during the week. 3. Palm Springs, California

Folks in Palm Springs are thrilled when March comes around, as longtime resident Kathy Condon can attest. “Cooler evenings give way to nearly perfect temperatures to visit one of the many restaurants that offer outdoor dining under the star-filled sky,” she says.

“Hikers plan longer treks because the weather is conducive to hiking ,” Condon tells us, “This year’s rainfall is sure to produce what people call a ‘super bloom.’ The seeds of wildflowers have been lying dormant, but it appears that because of our plentiful rainfall, there will be a profusion of wildflowers everywhere in March.

“Tennis enthusiasts can go to the 2023 BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden . Even if you aren’t a tennis fan, the gardens are spectacular,” says Condon. “Strolling the grounds and dining here with friends is a magnificent experience.”

4. Quepos, Costa Rica

“ Costa Rica is the ideal choice to escape the last vestiges of winter;” according to Sharon Kurtz , who got into the pura vida spirit on a paradise getaway at Karahé Beach Hotel last March. Less than 3 hours by car from San Jose, it is situated on the rainforest hillside between the nearby town of Quepos and  Manuel Antonio National Park . She tells us, “It has a laidback vibe with shady relaxing spots under swaying palm trees.”

“Espadilla Beach’s broad swath of white sand stretches out for more than a mile across the Manuel Antonio coastline, yet the cerulean blue waters aren’t the only attraction people come for,” Kurtz says. “Manuel Antonio (closed on Tuesdays) is the smallest park in Costa Rica, but abundant with wildlife . Capuchins, howler, and squirrel monkeys are some of the most social creatures, but I spied a bashful sloth and her baby on a tree branch just off the path.”

5. Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Located on Florida’s southeast coast, a trip to Fort Lauderdale in March offers visitors a tropical ambiance without the sweltering heat, according to Am y Piper .

“While you’re there, explore the city using the Water Taxi . The waterway is a fun way to get around, and you’re likely to see those lizards sunning themselves along the coastal walls.

“With the grandkids in tow, you’ll find several places they’ll enjoy. First, Sistrunk Marketplace is an excellent place to take the kids for lunch or dinner. They have a wide variety of local restaurants in a casual, kid-friendly environment. When everyone wants a different cuisine, they’ll all find something they’ll enjoy here.

“Then, be sure to check out the Museum of Discovery and Science . The museum showcases more than 300 interactive exhibits, immersive films, and experiential programs. The littles will love the play area, and the pre-teens will enjoy the aviation-themed Makerspace.”

“With temperatures averaging 70 to 78 in March, Key West is perfect for thawing out after a long, frigid winter,” says Sandi Barrett .

She recommends sipping a piña colada with an added rum float while strolling along Mallory Square during the nightly Sunset Celebration. Between the beautiful dipping sun, the dock filled with happy vacationers, and the “insane” street performers, visitors won’t have a care in the world.

For dinner, Barret suggests El Meson De Pepe’s. “The outdoor patio is just steps away from the Mallory Square action and filled with happy diners,” she tells us. “They don’t take reservations, so plan accordingly. The Cuban cuisine is heavenly and the atmosphere is festive — right down to the roosters wandering under and around the tables. Order some small plates to share and let the party begin.”

“Key West is perfect for the outdoor enthusiast,” Barrett says. “Enjoy the gorgeous beaches, explore Dry Tortugas National Park , snorkel, or simply sail out to sea.”

7. Longboat Key, Florida

While there are warmer places outside of the U.S. in March , SJ Morgensen contends that the Florida Gulf Coast is a perfect place to spend time. “With an average high of 78 degrees in March, it’s warm enough to hit the beach, but not sweltering hot like July and August can be,” she says.

“Longboat Key offers pretty beaches, upscale restaurants , and a small-town feel, she tells us. “The perfect place to stay in Longboat Key is Zota Beach Resort. You’ll love the beachfront access and infinity pool.” Morgensen suggests watching the sun go down from the resort’s private beach.

Pro Tip: “If you go, make a reservation at Euphemia Haye for one night,” suggests Morgensen. “Get the Caesar salad. Made fresh, this is the best Caesar I’ve ever had!”

8. Ocala, Florida

“Located in north central Florida, Ocala is a special place,” says Kathleen Walls . You may be amazed to find out that there are canyons here. “ The C a nyons Zip Line and Canopy Tours created a zipline over Sky High Canyon and Gator Lake,” she tells us. “When I saw this beautiful landscape, I couldn’t believe it was an ugly limestone mine at the turn of the 20th century,” recalls Walls.

One of America’s famous female gangsters died in a gunfight near Ocala. Walls recommends visiting Ma Barker House to learn facts about Kate Barker that differ from Hollywood’s depictions.

“Fort King Visitor Center’s reconstructed fort with live reenactments is fun,” Walls tells us. “I learned things about the Seminole Wars that are not taught in school.”

“ Silver Springs State Park with its glass-bottomed boats is another favorite,” says Walls, “It’s hosting a Springfest March 4 and 5. Don’t miss the museum and Cracker Village. Another festival is the Strawberry Festival, also on March 4. There will be a car show, petting zoo, entertainment, and lots of strawberries.”

10. San Juan, Puerto Rico

“Traveling from the United States to Puerto Rico has all the ease of domestic travel but travelers still get that Caribbean-getaway vibe,” says Jill Robbins . I last traveled to Puerto Rico in January 2023 and the beach weather was perfect. The water was slightly chilly (but not unbearable), so March should offer some beautiful beach days.

Robbins recommends staying in the Isla Verde district, which is home to several beachfront resorts. “Isla Verde is a 10-minute drive from the airport and about a 30-minute drive to historic Old San Juan,” she says.“Wander along the blue cobblestone streets and admire the unique, colorful buildings. Be sure to check out the local shops and restaurants. Sample some street food if you get a chance. You’ll always find a party here. March brings a rum festival, a jazz festival , and many more events with live music.

“Palestine, Texas, is located in beautiful East Texas, about 1.5 hours from Dallas, where the tall pine trees outline both sides of the highway. The town of Palestine is my choice for you to check out in 2023 between March 17 and April 2 for the 85th Texas Dogwood Trails Celebration . It’s when the dogwood blooms come out to play. Every year around this time, the dogwood trees sprout their small clusters of four white petal flowers with pink to reddish centers. Even the green buds of the tree are beautiful.

“Not only will you see the beauty of these popular East Texas trees in Palestine, but the city also celebrates special events such as the Texas State Railroad Dogwood Lunch Train , Dogwood Fly In Fair, Piney Woods Express diesel train adventure, and many more.
