How to Get to Powell River

While Powell River is technically part of mainland Canada, it isn’t particularly easy to get to. However, the difficulty to get here does add to the charm and reduces the number of tourists. Below are the most common routes to get here and the approximate time it takes to drive these routes.

Vancouver to Powell River – 4.5 Hours

Wondering how to get from Vancouver to Powell River? There are actually a couple of separate routes, which are detailed below. However, the 1st route through Gibsons to Powell River, along the Sunshine Coast, is the quickest and easiest route. Powell River is an awesome long weekend getaway from Vancouver .

Option 1 – 4.5 Hours

  • Ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale
  • Drive from Langdale to Earls Cove
  • Ferry from Earls Cove to Saltery Bay
  • Drive from Saltery Bay to Powell River

This route is a mixture of driving and two short ferry rides. On busy weekends we highly recommend booking the ferries several months in advance. You can check out the BC Ferries schedule to Powell River here.

BC Ferry ride along the coast of British Columbia

Option 2 – 5.5 Hours

  • Ferry from Vancouver to Vancouver Island (Either Horseshoe Bay or Tsawwassen)
  • Drive from Nanaimo to Comox
  • Take the Comox to Powell River ferry

This route is slightly longer, mainly due to the long ferry rides, although if you take this route you can mix your trip to Powell River with a bit of a road trip around Vancouver Island .

Vancouver Island to Powell River – 1 Hour 40 minutes from Comox

The journey from Vancouver Island to Powell River is much easier as it just requires one ferry.

  • Drive to Comox
  • Comox ferry to Powell River

Flights to Powell River BC

Flights to Powell River are operated by Pacific Coastal Airlines and they mostly operate Vancouver to Powell River flights. The schedules do change slightly throughout the year so you can check what flights are operating directly with Pacific Coastal Airlines .

Places to Stay in Powell River

Beach Gardens Resort Powell River – There aren’t too many options to choose from in terms of hotels in Powell River, but the Beach Gardens Resort and Marina is probably the best choice. It is in a great location, just a short drive from the town centre and it is right on the water so you’ll get nice views out over the water. Like most accommodation in Powell River, it is also very reasonably priced.

There are also several places to go camping in Powell River, such as Willingdon Beach Campsite, which is right on the edge of town or camp a short drive away at Haywire Bay Regional Park.

Things to do in Powell River, BC

1. visit savary island.

While not quite in Powell River itself, there are few better things to do than visit the incredible Savary Island. This little slice of paradise is home to the warmest waters north of Mexico and has some of the most beautiful beaches you’ll find anywhere in Canada (tied for the top spot with T ofino ).

Savary Island is one of the more unique places you will visit along the west coast and the island has very little infrastructure which is what makes it so charming. Once you get off the water taxi you’ll find gravel roads, beach huts and a whole lot of untouched wilderness to enjoy. The island is ideal for a day trip or you can rent a cabin or stay in the local campground if you want to extend your trip here.

South Beach on Savary Island

The best thing to do on Savary is to visit South Beach . This part of the island is home to a long stretch of pristine white sand and warm water that is ideal for swimming. Even the path down to the beach is cool, as you walk down a steep sandy trail that is cut into the side of the cliff that overlooks the beach. Enjoy basking in the sun, swimming, throwing a frisbee around and checking out the cool driftwood shelters that line the beach.

We really enjoyed just walking along the main road that runs through the heart of Savary, known as Vancouver Boulevard , and checking out all of the unique cabins and eclectic shops. This includes Riggers (the local pub), the food truck located in the back garden, the General Store, the Sugar Shack and some other stores that can be found as you wander along the main road.

Cottages on Savary Island

Most places on the island are cash only so be sure to have some cash with you. The General Store does allow you to get cash-back with any purchase using a debit card if you are stuck.

If you want to reach the far end of the Island, especially if you are just visiting for the day, then we highly recommend that you bring your bike over on the water taxi or rent a bike from Savary Bike Rentals . You’ll have such an amazing time exploring this beautiful little island and all of the hidden treasures it has to offer.

How to Get to Savary Island

There are very few vehicles on Savary Island and the main mode of transportation is biking or walking. This means that the main way to get to Savary is to take a small water taxi from Lund which only carries people and bicycles. The water taxi costs $12 per person each way and during the busy summer months, it is recommended that you book your ticket in advance.

You can find the schedule for Lund Water Taxi and book your trip here .

While you are on the ferry, keep an eye out for whales as we saw several whales on our trip over as well as from the pier on Savary as we waited for our return water taxi. They are fairly common in these waters and the water taxi even shut off its engines so we could watch the whales swim by.

2. Townsite Brewing Inc.

Enjoy an ice-cold beer in one of the best Powell River attractions, Townsite Brewing Inc. This micro-brewery is located in the Townsite region of Powell River which sits right on the shores of the Salish Sea. The brewery is located in a pretty red-bricked building and the interior is just as cool as the exterior and one of the tables you can sit at is a fully functioning, old-school arcade machine.

They brew a wide range of beers with a Belgian flair and their taps are constantly rotating as they make beers to match the seasons. They usually have around 10 or so beers on tap for you to try as well as a couple of ciders and kombucha. The brewery is usually busy and we really enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere as we spent a couple of hours drinking away a rainy afternoon.

They do have off sales so you can grab some of your favourite beers to take home with you. A visit to the brewery should definitely be high up on your list of things to do when you visit.

3. Hike the Sunshine Coast Trail

The Sunshine Coast Trail in Powell River is a 180-kilometre backcountry hiking trail that runs from Desolation Sound all the way to Saltery Bay. What is awesome about the Sunshine Coast Trail is that you can hike so many different parts of it based on the amount of time you have available. There are lots of day trips, overnighters and multi-day trips to choose from so you can enjoy at least part of the trail.

One of the most popular sections of the trail and one that we highly recommend is Tin Hat Hut . There are actually 14 huts along the entire trail and it is Canada’s longest hut-to-hut hiking trail. While there are numerous huts to choose from, the Tin Hat Hut might just be the pick of the bunch.

Tin Hat Hut on the Sunshine Coast Trail Powell River

It is a relatively easy hike and can be done as a day trip or as a short overnight trip . If you have the gear we highly recommend staying up at Tin Hat in Powell River as the sunset from up here is spectacular. You’ll get to enjoy 360-degree views over the surrounding mountains and lakes as well as being able to see all the way out to Texada Island and beyond. The huts are completely free to use or you can bring a tent as there are a few places to set up next to the hut.

Whether you have several days or just one, make sure you check out at least a part of this incredible trail and enjoy the magnificent views from one of the many peaks.

4. The Hulks, Powell River

The Hulks are a string of concrete reinforced ships that have been floated just off the coast of Powell River to create a floating breakwater. This breakwater was made in 1930 to create a log pond for the pulp and paper mill. This was once the largest paper mill in the world and at one point employed 2,500 people.

The water was too deep to sink the ships so they had to be floated instead. This is regarded by many as the largest floating breakwater in the world. The best way to see the Hulks is to stop at Townsite Viewpoint along Marine Avenue which gives you an aerial view of this unique floating structure. You won’t need more than a few minutes at the viewpoint but it is definitely worth making a quick stop here.

5. Willingdon Beach Trail

If you are looking for an easy and beautiful walk then check out the Willingdon Beach Trail in Powell River. This trail is 1.2 kilometres one way and the wide gravel path is quite flat the entire time making it easy for anyone to walk. Trains used to run along a track here and the trains carried logs to the mill to be processed. You can still see some remnants of this history along the trail, including an old trestle bridge and a steam donkey.

As well as a quick look into some of the history of Powell River, you’ll also get beautiful views out over the ocean as you walk right along the water. The trailhead is right by Willingdon Beach campground, so you can park at the beach and find the trail just past the beach.

6. Willingdon Beach

If you are looking for a nice place to enjoy the sun for a few hours but don’t want to travel too far then head to Willingdon Beach in Powell River. It is a few minutes walk from the town centre and there is a really nice patch of golden sand to relax on or you can head to the rocky part of the beach on the other side of the pier.

You’ll find volleyball courts, kids play park (including an area with shooting water fountains for hot days), picnic tables, a large grassy area and bathrooms. This is the perfect place to enjoy on a sunny day, especially as it is within walking distance from the town centre.

Willingdon Beach Powell River

7. Stand Up Paddleboard or Kayak

Powell River has plenty of spectacular coastlines, and while you can enjoy it from land, it looks even better from the water. Either bring your own stand-up paddleboard or rent one. If you are looking for SUP or kayak rental in Powell River then head to Mitchell’s Canoe, Kayak & SUP, Sales and Rentals.

You can get into the water at numerous points along the coast and there are several beaches and bays for you to explore. If you don’t like the open water as much you can also paddle around one of the many lakes in the area, like Powell Lake or Inland Lake. We love getting out on the water and kayaking in Powell River is such a great way to take in the beautiful surroundings.

Kayaking in Powell River

8. Powell Lake

Powell Lake is absolutely huge but we recommend checking out a small part of it by visiting Haywire Bay Regional Park. From here spend a few hours exploring the picturesque Powell Lake, or even better, stay at the campground that sits right on the edge of the lake.

This is a huge campground with first come first serve sites available year-round. There is a really nice day-use area in the middle of the campground that has a sandy beach to soak up some sun and a roped-off swimming area perfect for families.

If you have a kayak, canoe or SUP you can take to the water and explore slightly further afield. On a warm summer’s day, there are few better things to do than spend the day by the lake. Even if you get a bit of rain there is a shelter with a fire pit where you can escape and warm up. We were surprised by how quiet it was out here and it seems to be one of the Powell River secret spots or hidden gems based on how few people were here.

Powell lake

9. Inland Lake Provincial Park

Another of the beautiful Powell River lakes is Inland Lake. You can stay at Inland Lake Campground in Powell River and once here you can enjoy swimming, kayaking, boating and cycling the trails around the lake . The short drive from the town centre takes you deep into the countryside so you can enjoy a quiet escape out amongst the forest.

If you are feeling energetic then you can follow a well-maintained trail the entire way around the lake. The circuit totals 13 kilometres and you can walk or cycle along the path. It is a gravel trail that is intersected with bridges and wooden boardwalks along the way. Allow around 2 hours to walk the entire loop or hop on your bicycle to complete it in a much shorter time.

10. Check out Base Camp Coffee

One of the most popular spots in town, Base Camp Coffee is a cool spot to start your morning with a hot cup of coffee and a snack or come at lunch to grab one of their delicious sandwiches. This tends to be a pretty busy place, especially on the weekends, but it is worth stopping in at. Grab your coffee and a bite to eat and enjoy watching the world go by on the picnic benches that sit out front.

Base Camp Coffee is located on Marine Avenue and it’s hard to miss as there always seems to be people milling around outside. It’s definitely worth stopping in at.

Base Camp Coffee in Powell River

11. Grab a Margarita at Costa Del Sol

Another really cool spot located along Marine Avenue is Costa Del Sol. They have done an awesome job of making their small space feel like a small oasis in the heart of town. They have a really cool patio right out front of the restaurant and this extends around the side of the building as well.

They have done a great job with decorating the outdoor space, and they do have some fire pits and patio heaters for when it gets a bit colder. The atmosphere here is awesome and they make great margaritas, including rotating flavours. You can grab food here as well but if you are short on time then we recommend at least stopping in for a quick drink.

12. Walk along the Seawalk

On the other side of town to the Willingdon Beach Trail is the Seawalk. This is another easy and flat trail that you can walk or bike along. You’ll walk right along the harbour so you can check out all of the boats and watch the ferry come in and as you walk further along this trail you will enjoy unobstructed views out to the nearby islands of Texada and Harwood.

This is a really easy trail and the paved section is just 1 kilometre each way. If you do want to keep going there is a small dirt trail that continues on and eventually leads you to an open beach. This is another nice trail for families or if you just want to take in some more of the pretty views out over the Georgia Strait and surrounding islands.

The Seawalk in Powell River

13. Go Shopping in Powell River

There are some really cute stores in Powell River, especially along Marine Drive. Spend an hour or two checking out the Powell River shopping scene. You’ll find several boutique clothing stores, places selling handcrafted and local homewares, delicious ice cream shops, bike shops and lots of other little stores selling really cool local crafts.

The town centre in Powell River may be quite small but there are a lot of cool shops worth checking out during your visit here.

Final Thoughts

There are a lot of fun things to do in Powell River and this is really an outdoor adventurers paradise. Whether it’s hiking the Sunshine Coast Trail, visiting one of the local islands or kayaking along the coast, you’ll have an action-packed few days on your trip here. We really enjoyed our short time in this more remote and picturesque part of British Columbia.

A Guide to Powell River: The Sunshine Coast’s Hidden Treasure

Located on the North Coast, Powell River is home to some of the best outdoor adventures on the Sunshine Coast. Read on to discover the very best things to do in Powell River, including where to stay, eat, and sunbathe!

As we sail through the sheltered inlets that connect Earl’s Cove on the South Coast to Saltery Bay on the North Coast, a sense of serenity washes over me. Around me locals gaze at the familiar scenery that signals they’re almost home. Nearby, a few first timers snap photos on their cameras, filled with excitement for what awaits on the North Coast.

Green and ruggedly beautiful, a trip to the northern Sunshine Coast is a dream for those who crave peaceful solitude. After all, it’s these same striking surroundings that adventurers find so enticing that have kept the area relatively remote, despite its proximity to Vancouver.

Located in the traditional territory of the Tla’amin Nation, Powell River is one of the Sunshine Coast’s hidden gems. Its enchanting local culture and countless outdoor activities have turned many visitors into residents.

In this guide, I’m covering the very best things to do in Powell River, from outdoor adventures to places to eat and drink. I’ve also shared my choices for where to stay and personal tips to help you plan your time in Powell River.

PLANNING YOUR TRIP TO POWELL RIVER

Before we dive into all the wonderful things to do in Powell River, here is some important information and practical tips to help you plan your trip:

Although the Sunshine Coast is part of BC’s mainland, the mountainous terrain means it can only be accessed by air or water from Vancouver or Vancouver Island. From Vancouver, you can either drive or fly to Powell River.

H ow to get TO POWELL RIVER FROM VANCOUVER

To get to Powell River by car, take a short 40 minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale on the southern end of the Sunshine Coast. Once you arrive in Langdale, enjoy a leisurely drive (1h14) along the scenic Highway 101 to Earls Cove where you’ll board a second ferry to Saltery Bay. From Saltery Bay, it’s a 30 minute drive to Powell River.

Ferries do get busy especially over long weekends so I highly recommend booking your tickets in advance to secure your preferred crossings. You can check the sailing schedule  here .

If you don’t plan on using a car on the Sunshine Coast, you can fly directly to Powell River from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) with  Pacific Coastal Airlines . Not only in this a lot quicker than driving, it’s also a wonderful way to see the Sunshine Coast from a new perspective.

How to get to POWELL RIVER FROM VANCOUVER ISLAND

BC Ferries run daily services between the Little River ferry terminal in Comox to Powell River. It takes just under one hour and 30 minutes and usually costs $130 return per vehicle.

Due to the remote nature of the North Coast, having a car will give you the freedom to explore at your own pace and see more of the area. If you aren’t bringing a car, you can use public transit, taxis, and bikes. You can find out more  here .

I personally use Auto Europe as they have great rates. You can compare all the major companies in a grid format that shows the prices for different car sizes by provider. If you need any help, their 24/7 customer service is very good. Click below to check prices in your home currency.

WHERE TO STAY IN POWELL RIVER

Powell River has a variety of accommodation options to suit different tastes and budgets.

Booking your trip:  If you book your trip via my hotel links I will earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, which helps me keep this blog running. Thanks for your support – Steph.

The old courthouse inn.

Built in 1939, this highly rated boutique hotel was once home to Powell River Courts, Police Station, and even the Jail. Beautifully refurbished whilst retaining its history, the hotel’s 8 rooms have antique décor reminiscent of the Tudor era.

BEACH GARDENS RESORT AND MARINA

As the name would suggest, this hotel has a private beach area and a full-service marina. The rooms are clean and simple, and whilst they aren’t particularly special in terms of design, most have beautiful sea views and private balconies when you can watch the sunset.

BLITZ BEACH HOUSE OCEANSIDE SUITE

Located between Powell River and Lund, this oceanfront studio is one of my favourites. The studio is beautifully designed with high ceilings, natural wood interiors, and a private balcony. The views are truly wonderful and it’s a great place for storm watching in the off season if you want to experience the west coast at its wildest.

THINGS TO DO IN POWELL RIVER

1. go kayaking around desolation sound.

Located at the northern end of the Sunshine Coast lies the achingly beautiful Desolation Sound. Framed by the towering Coast Mountains, this secluded provincial park offers some of the most breath-taking views in Canada.

Rent a kayak and spend the day exploring the uninhabited islands and sheltered coves that make up this rugged wilderness. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife which are drawn to the area. Seals, bald eagles, and deer are a common sight, and it’s not unusual to spot pods of orcas and humpbacks.

Powell River Sea Kayak   offers rentals as well as single and multi-day kayak tours from both Lund and Okeover. We booked a day rental from Okeover Inlet and paddled out to Grace Harbour. While Desolation Sound is fairly sheltered, you are still out on the open water. You’ll need to have previous kayaking experience if opting for a self-guided trip.

Things to do in Powell River - Kayaking

2. Explore the historic townsite

Designated as a National Historic District in 1995, Powell River’s townsite is remarkably intact. The historic townsite has retained more than 400 original buildings from the 1910 town plan, including the paper mill which was once the largest in the world. Today, it operates as an arm of Catalyst Paper and serves as a reminder of Powell River’s mill town roots.

Visit the Powell River Historical Museum to learn more about the town’s heritage. Here you’ll find a collection of logging equipment as well as art from the Tla’amin First Nations.

3. Hike the Sunshine Coast Trail

Stretching 180 km from Sarah Point in Desolation Sound all the way to Saltery Bay, the Sunshine Coast Trail is Canada’s longest hut-to-hut hiking trail. There are 14 huts dotted along the trail where hikers can sleep before continuing their journey. These are currently closed due to the provincial guidelines. As a result, you’ll need to bring your own tent if you’re planning a multi-day hike.

If you don’t fancy hiking the full 180 km, there are various access points along the way so you can explore smaller sections of the trail instead. There are a number of wonderful  day hikes  and  short multi-day routes  that enable hikers to experience the North Coast’s diverse landscapes. Coastal shores, old growth forests, serene lakes, and panoramic mountaintops await those who venture into the beautiful back-country.

Given its proximity to many of the trail heads, hiking the Sunshine Coast Trail is one of the most popular things to do in Powell River. Sliammon Lake, Haywire Bluff and Inland Lake are great day hikes which are easily accessible from Powell River.

Things to do in Powell River - Sunshine Coast Trail

4. Or opt for a more leisurely trail

Although the Sunshine Coast Trail takes the lion’s share of visitors and publicity, Powell River boasts a myriad of scenic and picturesque hiking trails. Two popular trails include Willingdon Beach Park Trail and the Seawalk. Willingdon Beach Park Trail follows the coastline to the Townsite, whilst the Seawalk offers unprecedented views of the Salish Sea. If you have time, explore some of the trails in Millennium Park which pass old growth trees and delightful creeks.

5. Take a day trip to Savary Island

Located at the entrance to Desolation Sound, Savary Island is one of the most picturesque islands in the Straight of Georgia. Due to the southern tide, the island is blessed with the warmest water north of Mexico. Add white sandy beaches and it’s hardly surprising that a day trip to Savary Island is one of the most popular things to do in Powell River.

To get from Powell River to Savary Island make your way north to Lund, the furthest point on Highway 101. You can either drive, taxi, or if you’re travelling on a Tuesday or Friday,  bus .

Once at Lund, board the passenger-only ferry to Savary Island which takes around 15 minutes. Both  Lund Water Taxi   and  Savary Island Ferry  offer daily sailings but its recommended that you reserve your time in advance to avoid disappointment.

Things to do in Powell River - Visit Savary Island

6. Go to the movies

If you’re looking for unique things to do in Powell River, head down to the  Patricia Theatre , Canada’s longest running movie theatre. Built in 1913, the theatre is a key part of Powell River’s history and the cultural hub of the historic Townsite. Although the theatre has stepped into the modern age with a state-of-the-art sound system, it still retains its original charm that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back to another era.

7. Sample the local beers

Any trip to the Sunshine Coast should involve a stop at one of the region’s multiple award-winning craft breweries. The flourishing beer culture extends all the way north to Powell River which is home to Townsite Brewing. This microbrewery is located in the town’s historic district and offers brewery tours and tastings all year round.

Try to grab a table outside and soak in the atmosphere and heritage of the area. It’s one of the best things to do in Powell River, even if you’re not a beer drinker. Whilst it may be a brewery first and foremost, it also serves a range of craft ciders and non-alcoholic options to cater for all tastes.

8. Sunset at Second Beach

No holiday to the Sunshine Coast is complete without a little beach time. Thanks to its location, Powell River boasts many great beach spots that you can enjoy all year round. Second Beach (or Hulks Beach as the locals call it) is a popular place to cool off in the heat of summer and is accessible via a short hike from Willingdon Beach Trail. It’s also a wonderful spot to watch the sunset. Wrap up warm, grab a blanket, and end your day listening to the waves wash up against the shore.

9. Visit the other coastal towns on the North Coast

Powell River is a wonderful base from which to explore the other Northern coastal towns, namely Lund and Saltery Bay. The Sunshine Coast is all about slowing down and relaxing, so try to plan your trip so that you can spend a little longer in each, rather than just popping in for an hour and rushing to the next.

Depending on how long you’re visiting, you could catch the ferry from Saltery Bay to Egmont and spend a few days exploring the South Coast and experience the local culture.

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK

Base camp coffee.

No trip to Powell River would be complete without stopping by  Base Camp Coffee . A staple of the Powell River community, this café and eatery serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with a range of delicious takeaway options. Even if you’re just after a coffee, pop into Base Camp to admire the local artwork from talented artists based in Powell River.

COSTA DEL SOL LATIN CUISINE

Set in a former 1900’s police station,  Costa Del Sol  serves fresh Mexican and Latin inspired dishes in a vibrant setting. Sip on margaritas as you take in the Mexican masonry and local art and let yourself be transported to Mexico for the night.

Culaccino  was recommended to us by several people and after walking by and having a quick glance at the dishes being served, we can see why. Whilst we didn’t have time to eat here, it would be remiss not to include it on this list. If you’re yearning for authentic Italian cuisine, this is the place.

COASTAL COOKERY

Run by the same owners of Costa Del Sol and Culaccino,  Coastal Cookery  is another West Coast staple offering some delicious and mouth-watering dishes. If like me you have a serious sweet tooth, you’ll want to eat here for the desserts alone!

THE SEASIDER BISTRO + WINE BAR

The  Seasider Bistro + Wine Bar  is chic yet relaxed restaurant with one of the best patios overlooking the ocean. Sip on a glass of wine or sample one of the delectable cocktails on the patio, and keep cozy by the fireplace whilst you watch the sun go down.

Powell River: A Coastal Gem for Arts, History and Outdoor Lovers

powell river bc tourism

Powell River is located on the upper part of the Sunshine Coast, separated by a channel from the lower Sunshine Coast

Perched between mountain vistas and pebbled shores, Powell River is recreation and arts hub for community members and visitors alike

From the waterfront park and ferry terminal in Westview, to the picnic views at Powell Lake and historic mill buildings of Townsite, it’s a coastal gem for those who love art, festivals, history, and plenty of outdoor adventure.

Powell River is located on traditional territory of the Sliammon First Nation. The city is named after Dr. Israel Wood Powell, who travelled up the coast in 1881 as BC’s first Superintendent of Indian Affairs and came across a short river that was flowing into the ocean, originating at a lake – both of which were then named after Powell. The area was soon surveyed and logging camps were established. It became a destination for the steamships and the pulp and paper mill started to flourish. Within two decades it became the largest newsprint mill in the world.

The mill company built up the town for its workers, providing a movie theatre, gardens, and recreational facilities, and became the home of some of BC’s first dial phones and radios. The historic Townsite is recognized by the federal government today as a National Historic District and there are over 400 heritage buildings near the mill that can be explored through walking tours.

Shops and Entertainment in Powell River

powell river bc tourism

Visitors at every activity level can enjoy Powell River as it offers a walkable downtown corridor in Westview with shops and restaurants.

Also in Townsite is the new Townsite Brewing , where you can sample and purchase locally brewed beer at the Rodmay Inn . Stop in to Magpies (at the Rodmay) for a hearty diner breakfast.

For those looking for a bit of adventure, the Sunshine Coast is a natural playground.

Powell River’s Trails and Beaches

There are two words that pop up often when you’re searching for things to do in Powell River: 1. Beach; 2. Trail.

Being right on the coast, beaches are plentiful. Saltery Bay (where you would arrive from the Earls Cove ferry) has a provincial park campground and diving. Palm Beach Regional Park is a hit with the kids, with snorkelling and tidal pools to explore. For swimming try Mahood Beach, Stillwater Bluffs, Lang Bay, or Myrtle Rocks Regional Park.

Between Westview and Townsite, there’s also Grief Point Park and Willingdon Beach Park, which has a fishing pier and is a popular spot for sunbathing, hiking, and picnics.

When it comes to hikes and walks, the Sunshine Coast Trail is a top destination, yet still a very well-kept secret. It’s 180 kms that can be conquered over the course of a few days, or in smaller sections during one-off hikes. There are two-day, three-day, and four-day hike options and volunteers have built shelters to use along the way for overnight stops. Hikers can take in panoramic views from mountain ridges along the lower and upper Sunshine Coast stretches but plan ahead and be prepared for seasonal conditions.

For a trail route closer to the ground, there’s Inland Lake Provincial Park, Valentine Mountain (with about 100 wooden steps and a view to reward those who make it up), Willingdon Beach Trail for leisurely strolls, and at least a dozen more routes.

Other adventures opportunities include diving, fishing, canoeing, mountain biking, and golfing.

How to Get to Powell River

powell river bc tourism

Powell River is located on the upper part of the Sunshine Coast , separated by a channel from the lower Sunshine Coast (Pender Harbor, Sechelt, Gibsons). To get there from Vancouver you can take BC Ferries from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale (Gibsons), drive up the coast, and hop on another ferry at Earl’s Cove. That will get you into Saltery Bay, which is about a 30-minute drive south of Powell River.

Right in town, at Westview, there’s also a BC Ferries route over to Comox on Vancouver Island, which is between Campbell River and Nanaimo.

Travelling by car (or bus, with Malaspina Coachlines) you’ll take Highway 101 up through the Sunshine Coast which is also called the Pan-American Highway. It extends 15,020 kms from Chile’s south coast all the way up to Lund, which is just north of Powell River.

The best part of the journey is that you can stop at so many interesting places along the way and up the coast. There’s Gibsons Landing (art galleries, fresh catches off the docks, Molly’s Reach from The Beachcombers ), Sechelt Inlet (for a seaside walk), Skookumchuck Narrows (for hikers and thrill-seekers on the rapids), and more.

If you would like to get to Powell River within a half hour, flights are available from Vancouver International Airport’s South Terminal via Pacific Coastal Airlines.

Sunshine Coast Upcoming Events

The Sunshine Coast is home to more artists per capita than any other region in Canada and with that comes a thriving community events calendar. Film festivals, studio tours, music festivals, the blackberry festival, arts festivals, and more.

Lund Shellfish Festival : Friday May 25 to Monday May 28, 2012 Spot Prawn Festival : Saturday, June 16, 2012 2nd Annual Powell River Blues Festival : Friday, June 1 to Saturday, June 2, 2012.

savary island camping guide

1. Savary Island

Savary Island is just a short boat trip from Powell River and it’s a beautiful and peaceful island that I highly recommend visiting for a day or two while near Powell River.

On this car-free island, the primary modes of transportation are walking and cycling, which just makes the whole place even more peaceful.

The island is also known for having Canada’s warmest waters north of Mexico, and it’s home to remarkably stunning sandy beaches—South Beach being a standout with its pristine white sands and inviting clear waters.

As you walk down Vancouver Boulevard, the island’s main road you’ll come across shops, cabins, and a few places to eat such as Riggers pub and the General Store.

Most places on Savary Island operate on a cash-only basis so don’t forget to bring some!

If you’re interested in exploring the entire island, especially if your time there is limited, bringing a bike on the water taxi or renting one from Savary Bike Rentals is a great way to get around.

The island is ideal for day trips, but if you want to stay longer, be sure to check out this Savary Island camping guide.

How to Get to Savary Island from Powell River

Savary Island has very few vehicles, so people mainly get around by biking or walking.

To reach the island, take a small water taxi from Lund; it carries only people and bicycles.

The Lund water taxi costs $14 per person each way, and it’s wise to book your ticket in advance during the busy summer months.

townsite brewing powell river

2. Townsite Brewing

Townsite Brewing, Powell River is a coastal micro-brewery that focuses on great beer with a Belgian flair. You’ll find classic brews and seasonal favorites.

Not a beer drinker? There’s often some cider or kombucha on tap too.

The building itself is super pretty with red brick and even an old-school arcade machine. If you decide to get drinks for later, you can pick up some cans to take back to your hotel or home too.

3. Eat at the best Powell River restaurants

For such a small town there’s no shortage of great Powell River restaurants . You can find delicious Mexican, flavorsome coastal cuisine, and strongly recommended Indian dishes too.

We ended up going back to the same place twice (before and after our kayak trip) because it was just so good!

desolation sound kayak

4. Take a kayak trip to Desolation Sound

This was the main reason we were in Powell River in the first place! Powell River is the perfect place to be before and/or after a kayak trip to Desolation Sound Marine Park.

We rented sea kayaks from Powell River sea kayaks just a little further up the coast and headed out for two nights camping at the Curme Islands. It rained non-stop but we still got some great views.

5. Explore the Copeland Islands

The Copeland Islands are another destination that’s popular with kayakers. It’s on the opposite side of The Sunshine Coast to Desolation Sound and is best accessed from Lund, just a little further north of Powell River.

tin hat mountain sunshine coast trail

6. Go Hiking on the Sunshine Coast Trail

The Sunshine Coast Trail is a 180 km long hut-to-hut hiking trail that spans the length of the Northern part of The Sunshine Coast. Completing the whole trail takes most people the best part of two weeks.

However, there are many parts of the trail that work great as day hikes, overnighters, or shorter multi-day trips. Perhaps the most popular segment is the do the Tin Hat Mountain hike on the Sunshine Coast.

This cabin is in one of the most beautiful locations with a view of the forest and lakes below. However, many of the other Sunshine Coast Trail cabins are stunning too!

7. Hit the backroads and go rock climbing

The Eldred Valley Road is extremely remote and renowned for great climbing and bouldering. There are huge granite walls to scale and the Eldred Camp in the forest makes a great base while you work on your project.

Though it’s tricky to get here due to the rough logging roads and remote locations, this is one of the best places for outdoor activities in Powell River if you’re an experienced backcountry user. This is where you’ll find some of the best Powell River secret spots.

the hulks powell river

8. View The Hulks of Powell River

The Hulks of Powell River is the name given to a line of ships that are concrete-reinforced in order to act as a floating breakwater. These are one of the top things to see in Powell River and they’re pretty unique.

The breakwater was required to make a log pond for the paper and Powell River pulp mill.

Fun fact: this mill was once the largest paper mill in the world!

Usually, these ships would have been sunk but since they were too big they were left floating. This gives you a pretty cool viewpoint – and certainly an unusual one! One of the best places to view the Powell River Hulks is the Townsite Viewpoint on Marine Avenue so head there and check off one of the most unique things to do in Powell River BC.

lund sunshine coast bc

9. Discover the best things to do in Lund BC

Just 30 minutes north of Powell River is the cute town of Lund. Even smaller than Powell River, Lund is also the end of the road! You can’t get any further north in this area without a boat.

Though it won’t take you long to explore Lund itself, it’s the launch point to Savary Island, the Copeland Islands, and, for some, Desolation Sound.

You can also take tours out into the ocean to try and spot whales, seals, and more.

willingdon beach trail

10. Walk Willingdon Beach Trail

The Willingdon Beach Trail is an easy walk of just over 1 kilometer long on a wide trail. The trail used to be a train line and you can still see bits and pieces from this including an old trestle bridge.

Since you’re walking alongside Willingdon Beach, you’ll get great views and it’s ideal for watching the sunset in Powell River!

11. Go stand-up paddleboarding

There is no shortage of lakes and water near Powell River.

If you don’t have a paddleboard you can rent one from Mitchell’s Canoe, Kayak & Sup. If you’re in the market for a paddleboard then take a look at iRocker . We got ours from there several years ago and have never had any issues!

You can paddle on both the coastline near Willington Beach or head inland to lakes such as Inland Lake, Sliammon Lake, and others. There’s nothing quite like getting out on the water on a beautiful day.

inland lake provincial park_

12. Visit Inland Lake Provincial Park

Inland Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes close to Powell River. It’s ideal for swimming, paddling, hiking, running, or cycling around the lake.

The trail around the lake is 13km long and has bridges and boardwalks at various points. Along the way, you’ll enjoy lake views and forest smells and sounds.

13. Spend a Chilled Morning at a Coffee Shop

Base Camp coffee shop in Powell River is a cute, rustic-feeling cafe with great hearty breakfasts and brunches, coffee, and cute local gifts. Plus, you’ll feel like part of the community here and if it’s adventure tips you need, the other guests and staff are likely to be able to help!

We also loved 32 Lakes which does delicious coffee and the best pastries!

14. Walk the Seawalk

At the southern end of town is the Seawalk where a gravel path runs alongside the ocean.

There are some benches and spots to soak up the views of Texada Island and the Powell River ferry from Vancouver Island.

powell lake powell river

15. Powell Lake

Powell Lake is expansive and serene, making it a must-visit spot, especially at Haywire Bay Regional Park. Here, you can spend a day exploring the stunning lake, or better yet, stay overnight at the campground located right along the lakeshore.

If you’re into water sports, bring your kayak, canoe, or SUP to go out further onto the lake (this can be a great way to get away from any pesky mosquitoes!).

On a sunny summer day, lounging by this lake in Powell River is very hard to beat.

There’s also a campground here that operates on a first-come, first-served basis all year round. If you’re not camping, there’s a great day-use area with a designated swimming area, ideal for families.

qathet Museum & Archives

16. Explore the historic townsite

Step back in time by visiting Powell River’s Historic Townsite, designated as a National Historic District in 1995.

This well-preserved townsite is home to over 400 original buildings from its 1910 town plan, including a paper mill that was once the world’s largest! Today, the mill, now part of Catalyst Paper, stands as a vivid reminder of Powell River’s industrial heritage.

To delve deeper into the town’s past, make a stop at the Powell River Historical Museum (qathet Museum & Archives) where you can find a wide array of logging equipment and art from the Tla’amin First Nations, offering a comprehensive look at the area’s rich history and culture.

It’s not far from downtown Powell River and it’s one of the best things to do in Powell River on a rainy day.

powell river farmers market bc

17. Check out the Powell River Farmer’s Market

The Powell River Farmers’ Market is a beloved local gathering spot, where you can shop for the best of the region’s agricultural produce and artisan products.

The market takes place on Saturdays and Sundays and is definitely the place to go for fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and flowers, as well as homemade jams, honey, baked goods, and more.

Not only is the market a fantastic spot to pick up fresh produce, but it’s also a wonderful opportunity to meet local farmers and artisans.

You can often enjoy live music and hot food from local vendors too.

Campbell River City Guide: A Brief History Of Campbell River, BC

Campbell River, located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, is a city with a rich and fascinating history that dates back thousands of years. Long before European settlers arrived in the area, the region was home to several Indigenous groups, including the Wei Wai Kai, Wei Wai Kum, and the K’ómoks First Nation. These groups lived off the bounty of the land and sea, fishing and hunting in the rivers and forests that surrounded them. They established intricate trade networks and developed their own unique cultures and traditions.

In the late 1700s, European explorers began to arrive in the area. Captain George Vancouver, who sailed through the region in 1792, named the area after his colleague, Captain Samuel Campbell. The arrival of European settlers brought significant changes to the region, with new industries and economies emerging in the area.

In the late 1800s, the first permanent settlers arrived in Campbell River, drawn by the abundance of timber and fish in the region. The early pioneers built homes, cleared land, and established businesses, laying the foundation for the city that we know today. Many of these early settlers worked in the logging industry, felling trees and transporting logs down the Campbell River to the coast.

The arrival of the railroad in 1914 brought a new era of growth and prosperity to Campbell River. The railroad made it easier to transport goods and people to and from the city, allowing businesses to flourish and the population to grow. The fishing industry also boomed during this time, with canneries and processing plants springing up along the waterfront. Fishing boats from all over the world came to Campbell River to take advantage of the rich waters and abundant fish stocks.

In the 1950s, the construction of the John Hart Dam brought hydroelectric power to the area, further fueling economic growth and development. Today, Campbell River is a thriving city with a population of over 35,000 people. While it has certainly grown and changed over the years, it remains deeply connected to its roots and proud of its rich and storied history.

Visitors to Campbell River can explore the city’s history by visiting the Museum at Campbell River, which features exhibits on the area’s Indigenous history, early pioneers, and local industries. They can also take a stroll through the downtown area, which features several historic buildings and landmarks, such as the Maritime Heritage Centre, the Sybil Andrews Cottage, and the Haig-Brown House. Visitors can also take part in cultural experiences, such as traditional canoe tours with Indigenous guides, or visit the Elk Falls Provincial Park, which offers hiking trails and stunning views of the region’s natural beauty .

The city’s rich history is a testament to the hard work and determination of its residents, past and present, and serves as a source of pride for those who call Campbell River home.

BC Kayak Tours & Rentals in Desolation Sound | Powell River Sea Kayak

What are the Best Things to Do in Powell River?

What are the best things to do in Powell River?

Powell River is emerging as a tourist destination in its own right, with people flocking to the Upper Sunshine Coast in greater numbers every year. The main draw for the majority of tourists in this region is the immense natural beauty and seemingly endless opportunity for outdoor pursuits.

While there is plenty more to Powell River than the great outdoors – including great history, culture, food and entertainment – we’re going to focus here on the best things to do outdoors (in both summer and winter) in Powell River!

1. Sea Kayaking in Desolation Sound

Perhaps we’re a little biased here, but please indulge us! Just 120km north of Vancouver lies Desolation Sound, beyond the end of the road in Lund, BC, and one of the best places to sea kayak on the west coast.

Warm, protected ocean waters and incredible mountain scenery are just some of the highlights of a kayak tour or rental in Desolation Sound. The marine park also has many idyllic island campsites with incredible marine life – from sea stars and urchins to whales and bald eagles – and some of the best sunsets in the world to enjoy after a long day of adventure!

If you’re interested in one of our sea kayak tours into Desolation Sound, please read more here.

2. Hiking a portion (or all) of the Sunshine Coast Trail

Many will have heard of the Sunshine Coast Trail before visiting Powell River. At 180 km in length – running from Sarah Point in Desolation Sound to Saltery Bay in the south – it is Canada’s longest hut-to-hut hiking trail and brings more tourists to Powell River each year than anything else.

However, that doesn’t mean it’s overcrowded! While some of the busier huts can fill up over the busy summer period, compared to trails in more populated and less remote areas it can feel at times like you’re the only ones out there.

The trail can be accessed at over 15 points along it’s length, so you don’t have to commit to the whole 180km all at once (thank God). The Sunshine Coast Trail website even has directions and recommendations for multi-day sections that you can link up depending on the amount of time you have available.

And with 14 (and counting) huts along the way, you don’t even have to carry a tent!

3. Canoeing the Powell Forest Canoe Route

Considered one of the premier canoe routes in British Columbia, the Powell Forest Canoe Route consists of 8 lakes and 57 km (and 5 portages) in the heart of the Powell River backcountry.

Much like the Sunshine Coast Trail, the route can be broken into smaller sections for shorter trips. Learn more about this incredible journey at Sunshine Coast Tourism .

4. Climbing in the Eldred Valley, or one of our local crags

Much like our paddling and mountain biking scene (see below), word is slowly getting out that the climbing in Powell River is a hidden gem within striking distance of Vancouver.

The Eldred Valley – some 34 miles via logging road out of town –   is surrounded by walls of soaring granite, some of which are nearly 900 metres high. With 5 main walls and almost limitless fields of boulders waiting to be discovered, the Eldred is has almost unimaginable potential for world-class climbing.

If that sounds a little out of the way, there are great opportunities for all styles of climbing close to town. Sport climbing at Highland (behind the Shingle Mill pub), trad climbing at the Lake Bluffs and bouldering right on the Salish Sea at beautiful Stillwater are all easily accessible within 30 minutes of Powell River. Check out more here !

5. Backcountry Skiing in the Knuckleheads

Here’s one for our winter guests!

Proving itself to truly be a four-season destination, Powell River is home to the Knuckleheads. This winter recreation hotspot is perfect for skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. There are now three fully winterized cabins available (free of charge!) after a day of adventure in the snow.

Each cabin has a sleeping loft, pellet stove, picnic table, and a propane cook stove. Snow is usually on the ground from early November to May, and can range in depth from 10 to 16 feet in January. Learn more about the Knuckleheads and winter recreation in Powell River on their website !

6. Mountain Biking on our developing trail system

Much like the climbing scene, the biking community is growing strongly in Powell River!

For many years, the woods of Powell River have been home to volunteers quietly creating and maintaining biking trails. All this hard work has been paying off, and with our inclusion in such events as the BC Bike Race, word is out that Powell River is a burgeoning mountain bike destination in it’s own right!

Check out the PRCA website for more info on trails and happenings in the biking community!

7. Camping at one of our countless backcountry lakes

Summer fo many Powell River-ites means camping at the lake. Whether that means renting a float cabin ‘up the lake’ on Powell Lake or taking the tent or trailer up into the Horseshoe Valley fo a weekend, camping is a quintessential part of life on the Sunshine Coast.

Great fishing, hiking, paddling and relaxing can be enjoyed at one of any number of sites in the area, from private campgrounds to little known forest service sites. Learn more at Powell River Tourism .

Historic Townsite District

Powell river’s historic townsite.

Designated as a National Historic District in 1995,  Powell River Historic Townsite  is one of only a few professionally planned, single-industry towns dating from the early modern period in Canadian town planning. Townsite is remarkably intact, with over 400 original buildings contained within the original borders of the 1910 town plan. Townsite was once home to the largest pulp and paper mill in the world. Stop by one of the Visitor Centres on the Sunshine Coast to pick up a Historic Townsite Walking Tour Map and start planning your visit.

Don't miss The Patricia Theatre , which serves as the cultural hub of Townsite. The theatre has gone through a restoration that maintains the original experience of movie-goers paired with a state-of-the-art digital and sound system. It also hosts events such as the qathet International Film Festival  each year.

Stop by Henderson House Living Museum, which is open to the public year-round and offers walking tours of the Townsite during the summer season. It's maintained by  Townsite Heritage Society , which promotes heritage education, heritage conservation, and the economic revitalization of Powell River’s National Historic District.

A newer yet key component of Historic Townsite is  Townsite Brewing . They brew beer with a Belgian flair, and often have something new on tap along with local favourites such as the Tin Hat IPA, Suncoast Pale Ale, and Perfect Storm Oatmeal Stout. Pick up some cool brewery swag and souvenirs that feature the same colourful artwork as their beer labels. Nearby you'll find Townsite Public Market , which is home to a bakery, coffee shop, grocery store, a wool shop, and more.

Looking for a place to stay? Consider booking a room at the Old Courthouse Inn or the Rodmay Hotel, two heritage hotels with distinct charm.

Powell River: the hidden gem of the Sunshine Coast in BC

Updated: Jan 15

Are you planning a visit to the Sunshine Coast in BC? We explored the Sunshine Coast in the summer of 2019 and totally fell in love. We chose Powell River as a base, as it has so much to offer for travelers and outdoor enthusiasts! This article reveals why you should consider visiting the Sunshine Coast in BC, the top things to do in and around Powell River, and how to get there from the Mainland and Vancouver Island.

Why you should visit the Sunshine Coast in BC?

The Sunshine Coast in BC is often confused with the Sunshine Coast in Australia: a tropical paradise filled with thousands of palm trees, pristine white-sand beaches, and splendid natural wonders. However, the Canadian Sunshine Coast is slightly different from the Australian one… There are no palm trees, tropical temperatures or azure waters. Yet, that doesn't mean that the Sunshine Coast in BC is less beautiful!

The Sunshine Coast in BC is unique in its own way. Located in the southwest on the mainland, this 180 km (112 miles) stretch of paradise is surrounded by endless mountain peaks, dense forests and pristine lakes. Only accessible by air or ferry service , the Sunshine Coast possesses a laid-back charm while remaining relatively quiet and unexplored by tourists. Even though it is not as tropical as Australia, the Sunshine Coast in BC is known for its mild, sunny and dry weather compared to the rest of Canada. As such, the area attracts outdoorsy visitors who are especially interested in hiking, mountain biking, paddling, boating, strolling around the artsy oceanside villages, or spending time at one of the many secluded beaches.

Why Powell River?

The historic town of Powell River is located along the Northern Sunshine Coast. Dominated by a sprawling paper mill, this town is known for being a logging community. Logging takes place all year long at accessible and more inaccessible areas around Powell River. Luckily it isn’t as bad as it sounds… The logging industry uses sustainable practices where they only log a maximum amount of trees each year so they have enough time to replant them. This also ensures that the surrounding nature of Powell River remains breathtaking! We chose Powell River as a base because it is the most accessible and largest community along the Sunshine Coast in BC . Besides, it has a rich heritage and is known for its dynamic cultural life, beautiful lakes and beaches, and great outdoor recreation - including hiking, camping, kayaking, and scuba diving.

Top Things to Do in and near Powell River

As the Sunshine Coast in BC is relatively isolated, Powell River doesn't receive as many tourists as the southern more populated areas of British Columbia like the area around Whistler or Vancouver. However, this doesn't mean that there isn't much to do... Powell River is the true hidden gem of BC and Canada.

The following activities are ones you can’t miss in and around Powell River:

1. Hiking the Sunshine Coast Trail (partly)

One of the main reasons people visit the Sunshine Coast is to experience Western Canada’s only FREE hut-to-hut hiking trail . The Sunshine Coast Trail is over 180 km long and connected by 13 huts where the traveler can relax and sleep at a first-come, first-serve basis. The trail is relatively quiet, with numerous lakes and scenic mountain viewpoints along the way. The beauty of it all is that you can decide to only do a small part of the trail if you’d like, as it is accessible via multiple logging roads.

We decided to hike one of the most scenic parts of the trail, the part leading up to Tin Hat Mountain . Hiking to the top of the Tin Hat Mountain takes approximately 3 hours as the trail is fairly steep and challenging. Nevertheless, you will be rewarded by a phenomenal 360-view of the surrounding snow-capped mountain peaks, infinite lakes, the Pacific Ocean, Vancouver Island and beyond.

If going for a day hike, allow yourself at least a one-hour break at the top to truly breathe in the natural surroundings and explore the Tin Hat Mountain Hut. The way back is only about 2 hours as it is downhill for the lion’s share.

Tin Hat Mountain is the best hike along the Sunshine Coast Trail in BC

Be cautious when driving to the Tin Hat Mountain Trailhead. The roads are not always clearly marked and logging roads may be in poor conditions. The easiest way to access the trail is to follow Highway 101 to Lang Bay and turn left at Dixon Road which merges with Stillwater Main right above Lois Lake Dam. Look out for signs that mark Tin Hat or Lewis Lake. There are multiple access points, which are indicated with the parking lot on the map. The parking lots may be challenging to find as they are not official but rather a small patch of gravel along the road. We parked on the one right above Lewis Lake, or at least we think we did. There was one other car parked there, and we found a sign with Sunshine Coast Trail on it. Read more about the hike to Tin Hat Mountain along the Sunshine Coast Trail here .

How to get to Tin Hat Mountain Trailhead along the Sunshine Coast in BC

Of course, there are many other awesome day hikes near Powell River that connect to the Sunshine Coast Trail. For instance, Appleton Creek is a trail that follows picturesque waterfalls and a grove of old-growth Douglas Firs. This hike is considerably shorter, taking about 3 hours total. We haven't done this hike, but it was recommended to us by a local! For more information about other trails, visit Sunshine Coast Day Hikes .

2. Camp, Relax, and Kayak at the Pristine Lakes around Powell River

Defined by a rugged coastline, Powell River is also known for its wealth of pure lakes. Most of these are relatively accessible by car and bike as they are connected by (primitive) logging roads. Nearby lakes include Inland Lake, Powell Lake, and Lois Lake , which allow you to camp, swim and/or kayak there . The desolation and tranquillity are what make these lakes especially unique. Peculiarly, you can find several houses in the center of the lake, home to the true lone wolves.

3. Visit nearby Savary Island

A nearby island worth visiting is Savary Island . A water taxi takes you from Lund (just north of Powell River) to the southern tip of the island. Savary Island’s sandy beaches and temperate climate make it a popular holiday destination. Given its small size (approx. 7km long and 1km wide), the island is basically a migrating, fragile sandbar. Rapid erosion is battled by dedicated preservation and protection campaigns. The island is best enjoyed on foot or by bicycle, which can be rented on the island itself. There are numerous quiet beaches within walking distance from the harbor. Ask the water taxi driver for the best beach, he'll tell you how to get there! We spent hours at the beach without seeing anyone... talking about a TRUE HIDDEN GEM!

Note : There are no public bathrooms on the island! There is only one restaurant/store, which has limited opening hours.

4. Strolling around the historic town of Powell River

The calm seaside towns are a perfect break from the hectic daily life. The townsite of Powell River has a fascinating history and ever-lasting calmness. Spend the day relaxing at the beach, grab a beer at Townsite Brewing (Belgian-style craft beer!), observe the continuously active paper mill, or just stroll around and breathe in the hippie vibe.

How to get to Powell River

Getting there from vancouver.

The Sunshine Coast can be reached by air (various seaplane harbors), ferry, car, or bike (for the true adventurer!). Coming from Vancouver, you will have to follow Highway 101, and take two ferries if traveling all the way to Powell River. The drive will take 4-5 hours as the roads on the Sunshine Coast are not connected to the Provincial Highway network. The first ferry takes you from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale, and the second one from Earl's Cove to Saltery Bay. On a positive note, you only have to pay one ticket which covers both ferry routes.

Getting there from Vancouver Island

From Vancouver Island , you can take a direct ferry to Powell River from Comox/Courtenay. Ferry schedules can be consulted at the BC Ferries website .
