Description

Bar none, our PrimePutt putting mat is the premium indoor putting mat designed for golfers, by golfers. We know how important putting is to lowering your scores, so we set out to create the most realistic, high-quality putting mat on the market. In doing so, we dedicated months of research alongside turf-grass experts, material scientists, and PGA professionals to find the closest surface to a real grass putting green.

Our tour-grade nylon turf material guarantees the most realistic feedback of any other putting mat, which is why PGA tour pros and golf experts everywhere use it. Regardless of skill level, PrimePutt offers the perfect practice surface for golfers looking to lower their scores and build short-game confidence. And no matter what home or office space you have to dedicate to your practice time, our various sizes provide the flexibility to fit any area and practice any distance.

Even better, PrimePutt's proprietary cup design guarantees you'll never have a putt blocked by another ball. At the same time, these innovative cups perfectly replicate full-depth golf cups: the misses miss, and the makes go in. For setup, our specially-designed rubberized bottom and no-memory material mean the PrimePutt mat lays flat and doesn't move right out of the box every time. These same materials lend incredible durability to our putting mats, so you can use yours indoors or outdoors, putt with the kids, and let the dog walk over it—still rest assured that your PrimePutt indoor putting mat will last a lifetime.

All told, our mat is just what you need to start making more 5-8 footers, stop three-putting from longer distances, and start lowering your score today.

What is the PrimePutt putting mat made out of?

We designed our putting greens alongside turf and material science experts to develop a Nylon turf that is the closest imitation of real grass possible.

Is an indoor putting green like putting on real grass?

Yes! There is nothing closer to real grass. Our putting mat design is the same as what's installed in the homes of PGA pros, the offices of the leading golf brands, and the leading golf retail stores.

How fast does the putting green roll?

Our mats roll at 10-12 on the Stimpmeter without the need to brush, vacuum, or iron ever. Additionally, every PrimePutt putting mat rolls true and naturally right out of the box.

How durable are your putting greens?

Unlike others, our putting mats are extremely durable. With pets, kids, or extended use, our putting mats were designed to be used and abused!

Can I use PrimePutt mats outdoors?

Yes! Our materials are the same as those used on outdoor practice greens. If you want to keep it in prime condition for the long run, though, we recommend storing it indoors.

How do I care for my putting green?

Our mats are very low maintenance and do not require any standard care to maintain their performance. Some customers may choose to vacuum them once occasionally to remove dirt or dust, but this isn't required.

How do I store my putting green?

Unlike some turf that can be creased out of the box or when it interacts with heat—or, worse, felt-based putting mats that wrinkle or slip—PrimePutt lays flat out of the box and after every roll-up. Because it comes with its own rubber backing and is meant for multi-surface use, there's no need for additional fuss like infill, tape, or weights to keep it set the way you need it. Unroll, lay it out, practice your short game, then roll it back up, and put it away. The next time you need it, it'll be just as good as new.

Why should I buy PrimePutt putting mat?

PrimePutt was founded to address a gap in the market for high-quality, realistic putting mats. Our products are created by golfers for golfers who demand the highest quality out of their putting mats in order to build the transferable skills needed on the greens.

To meet that expectation, we've spent hundreds of hours building, testing, and observing the products on the market in order to understand the pain points of golfers purchasing a putting mat for various use cases. When you invest in a putting mat, we believe you should always get more than your money's worth.

The putting mat you choose will vary in price depending on a multitude of factors: the type of surface of the mat, the quality of materials used, portability, or installment of the product.

Large cuts of artificial turf — which could replicate a golf course green — can set you back hundreds or even thousands of dollars, which won't include shipping and might not even include delivery, depending on the type of building you reside in. We deliver your PrimePutt Putting Mat for free so that you have one less thing to think about when making your purchase.

Benefits of using
a PrimePutt putting mat

Most realistic putting surface.

There are many types of indoor putting mats available in the market, each with different sizes, shapes, and colors. Some mats are made with rubber, felt, foam, or plastic material to make them more durable. We believe that practice only works when it builds transferable skills, which is why PrimePutt's putting mats are made to be the closest thing to putting on real grass. To achieve this feat, we worked with turf and material science professionals to create a putting mat on par with what can be found at a real golf course. This way, anyone can practice putting indoors and simulate true on-course conditions.

Innovative cup design

PrimePutt's indoor putting mat includes an elegant cup for draining putts. With three cups simulating three holes, this true-roll golf putting mat allows you to make more golf balls than your average golf mat. Our innovative cup moves any made putts to the back of the cup, clearing the way for your next perfect putt. In addition to this, a one-hole option is coming soon!

Our engineered hardwood backstop guarantees not only to stop long putts from rolling off the back, but also to not bounce back or block your next putt. That way, you can keep practicing without losing your concentration and retrieve your golf balls when you're good and ready!

Stay put bottom

A lightweight, flexible rubber bottom guarantees to keep the mat in place without bulging or slipping, so your PrimePutt mat is ready to go when you are.

Use what the pros use

If touring golf professionals practice putting on turf, why are so many putting mats made from carpet, felt, foam, or other unrealistic materials? PrimePutt's Putting Mats are what the pros use, but you don't need to be a pro to practice like one! We believe that if it's good enough for them, then you deserve to have it too, which is why our PrimePutt Putting Mat mimics the experience you have on real grass to supercharge your putting game.

Rolls true every time

PrimePutt's putting mats are the most durable green on the market, roll true every time with no maintenance required, and will hold up to daily use, all of which come together to give you a putting green in the comfort of your own home.

Portable and storable

The PrimePutt Putting Mat weighs approximately 15 pounds, so it's easy to roll up, pick up, and move around from the office or room to room in your house. Being so lightweight, virtually anyone can put it away and retrieve it anytime they're ready to practice again.

This makes it great for the whole family and for entertaining guests. If you don't have a ton of room in your home when you're done practicing or entertaining, you can pack it back up and store it so it doesn't get in the way of your daily activities.

Always lays flat

Unlike some turf that can be creased out of the box or when it interacts with heat — or, worse, felt-based putting mats that wrinkle or slip — PrimePutt lays flat out of the box and will lay flat after every roll-up. Because it comes with its own rubber backing and is meant for multi-surface use, there's no need for additional fuss like infill, tape, or weights to keep it set the way you need it. Unroll, lay it out, practice your short game, then roll it back up and put it away: the next time you need it, it'll be just as good as new.

Key considerations when buying
an indoor putting mat

The way that your putter, ball, and surface interact can affect your whole game, which is why the surface of a putting mat is so essential for real results. If you're practicing on a surface that doesn't replicate the real thing, then the skills you learn won't be transferable when you get to the course.

If you're looking for a putting mat specifically for increasing your skill set, then you need one that replicates a real golf course and produces a true roll. Felt or other cheap, non-turf surfaces could hinder your progress or even build habits that worsen your short game.

Our indoor putting mat is a compact 3 ft wide by 9 ft long, fitting most average hallways in homes, apartments, and offices, so you can easily incorporate it into any room. Even better, it rolls into itself, so it's easy to store and does not take up too much room beneath beds, in closets, or in storage compartments.

With the right putting mat, you won't need to spend thousands of dollars at a golf course or spend ages on a waitlist for a country club membership. Luckily, our PrimePutt Putting Mat is for anyone who wants to learn golf without racking up expenses that get in the way of enjoying the game.

Depending on how eager you are to perfect your putt, you need an indoor putting mat that can keep up with your demand. With our highly-durable materials and sleek design, you can rest assured that each swing will be consistent and that your mat won't wear out over time. For those with other family members or children who also enjoy golf, the PrimePutt Putting Mat can hold up to even the most "enthusiastic" of golfers.

Portability

A multi-surface indoor and outdoor putting mat shouldn't be cumbersome to take and place where you need it to be. Conversely, installing an entire green in your backyard means you'd still be subject to weather conditions and would be limited to a single designed practice space. With a portable putting mat, however (one weighing less than 15 pounds at that!), you can easily shift or adjust your practice space at the drop of a hat.

There are many different types of surfaces and designs of putting mats, all with the intention of helping you practice your game and enjoy the time spent doing so. While the features may all sound standard, the craftsmanship that goes into each detail can make a world of difference in your experience and enjoyment of the sport.

50 Words or Less

The PrimePutt indoor putting mat is a high quality and heavy duty training aid meant for realistic practice.  The real holes and wide area allow for high level putting and chipping practice all year round.

primeputt the best tour quality indoor putting mat

Introduction

PrimePutt is a newer company that was founded to solve the same problem that most of us golfers have: time.  When PrimePutt founder Steve Perri took up golf, he realized he needed to practice more, but didn’t have the time.  Thus, he sought to create the highest quality home putting mat to not only practice more but to hone his short game skills on a surface that would mimic the exact conditions he would see on the golf course.

Steve and his team sent PluggedInGolf the 3’x12′ putting mat to test.  I reviewed the oversized mat for a few weeks to see how beneficial this can be for someone like you.

primeputt the best tour quality indoor putting mat

Set Up & Ease of Use

When my new PrimePutt indoor putting mat arrived, it was only a matter of minutes before I was hitting putts right in my living room.  The mat easily flattened on the ground, and instructions were not needed.

Besides the mat, there are three white cups, a wooden back stop, and directions.  Each white cup slid underneath the mat in the precut holes almost like a rubber tee under a driving range mat.  The wooden back stop had two holes that helped align itself over two small pre-installed plastic nubs on the mat.  Then it was only a matter of figuring out how much slope was in my living room floors.

primeputt indoor putting mat

Effectiveness

The main purpose of any putting mat is to be able to simulate putting green conditions so you can practice at home.   That is exactly what I found to be true after using the PrimePutt indoor putting mat for only a few days.  The three foot wide putting surface allows a user to stand on the mat which mimics a real green .  This is superior to a narrower mat that requires your feet to be on a separate surface.   PrimePutt also offers an additional standing mat so that never becomes an issue.

primeputt the best tour quality indoor putting mat

The PrimePutt indoor putting mat rolls like a true green and has consistent speed .  I enjoyed using the different distance markers as well as the actual holes.  Seeing the ball drop in an actual hole to three different locations was an effective practice technique that can and will improve anyone’s short game.

One lesser known feature I found with this type of putting mat is that it can double as a chipping area .  Typically, with a less durable or thinner mat, chipping would be impossible.  The PrimePutt mat holds to the floor quite well so you can hit wedge shots as long as you don’t skull the ball through your drywall.

primeputt the best tour quality indoor putting mat

The PrimePutt indoor putting mat is one of the most heavy duty putting mats I have ever owned or reviewed.  The mat is driving range mat thick and is definitely going to hold up for a long time.  The bottom is rubber lined which not only keeps the mat from moving but will prevent any fraying or breakdown from occurring long term.  PrimePutt stands by their product with a lifetime guarantee .

primeputt the best tour quality indoor putting mat

Ranging from $259 to $499 , PrimePutt is above the price point of a typical indoor putting mat.  However, the high quality materials and unique details stand out as a vast step up from one of those cheaper alternatives.  The value is for the golfer looking for a better experience and to closely simulate turf conditions that you will experience on the course.  In addition to that, the wood back stop and actual cups are a lot more aesthetic in a golf room or basement than a traditional putting mat.

When evaluating putting mats to purchase, there are a range of options available.  The PrimePutt indoor putting mat stands out for its quality and the way it simulates on-course conditions.  It is worth the price and is among the best in the putting mat category.

I disagree with this review. I ordered a Prime Putt several months ago. It didn’t roll anything close to a real green. The ball literally took little bounces as opposed to actually rolling smoothly.

It’s a nice looking product but functionally not very good, just like every other artificial putting green “turf” on the market.

If you want a realistic roll, the carpeted mats like Big Moss and Wellputt are much better practice aids in my opinion.

It looks kind of spongy like the ball would bounce as Todd commented. How does this compare to BirdieBall? #DoubleSecret

Honest Review of The PrimePutt Putting Mat [+ Video Test]

August Noble was first introduced to golf at 7 years old. In 2013 he started seriously working on his game and was able to reduce his handicap from 19 to 3.4 in less than two years. He's been helping other golfers do the same ever since. Current Handicap: 4

PrimePutt is rapidly growing in popularity for making one of the premium putting mats on the market.

The key question though – is this mat REALLY worth the heftier price tag? I tested the PrimePutt putting mat for a couple of weeks (along with a few others, that you can see in the video at the bottom of this article) to see if it’s as good as people are claiming it it.

I’ll dive into what I like and dislike about the PrimePutt putting mat. My goal is to give you enough information so that you can make an informed decision on whether or not to buy this putting mat.

Before getting into the pros and cons of the PrimePutt mat, let’s do a brief overview of it.

Overall Rating and Thoughts

I liked the PrimePutt putting mat so much that I gave it an 8 out of 10 rating (the highest score out of the 3 putting mats I tested). My favorite feature of this practice green is the material. It really does feel like real grass, which provides you with a more realistic roll on each of your practice putts.

My second favorite feature of the PrimePutt mat is the overall flatness. It’s pretty impressive how flat this practice mat lays on the ground right out of the box. There aren’t any annoying bumps or air pockets to deal with, which is also a plus.

To keep this practice mat nice and flat, I highly recommend using some double-sided carpet tape around the edges of it. This will keep it from bowing in any kind of way.

Oh, and don’t forget about the unique cup design. Each time you make a putt, the golf ball naturally moves toward the back of the cup. This means that you can hole up to 4 putts in a row without having to empty each cup. With 3 cups on 1 end, you’ll get more time to practice your stroke instead of having to constantly retrieve your golf balls.

One of the downsides to the practice mat I tried was the size. The 3 x 9 just isn’t quite as large as I would like, especially for working on my putts from long range. So, if you want to give the PrimePutt mat a shot, I’d order either the 3 x 12 or the 3 x 15 size.

I also found a solution for the annoying flagstick problem. These things constantly slide out of the backing plate, which can be painful when setting up the cups. I used some SuperGlue on each of them, and it worked like a charm.

Overall, the PrimePutt is the best of the 3 practice mats that I reviewed. Its 2 competitors aren’t terrible options, but the PrimePutt mat really outclasses them in material and flatness. Setting up the PrimePutt putting mat is also quick and relatively painless.

PrimePutt Putting Mat

Lower your score and increase consistency by practicing daily on a quality, tour-grade, true roll turf mat.

Whether you’re a hardcore golfer looking to lower your overall handicap or just a weekend warrior that wants to putt a little bit for fun during the winter months, you can’t go wrong with the PrimePutt practice mat. Give it a shot, you won’t be disappointed!

Quick Overview of The PrimePutt Putting Green

A genuine golf enthusiast started PrimePutt with the goal of giving golfers around the globe the most realistic practice green on the market. The folks at PrimePutt know that no matter how much someone loves to golf, there just isn’t enough time to practice. The PrimePutt practice mat solves that problem!

Thanks to PrimePutt’s premium putting surface and overall impressive design, golfers can now practice their putting on a daily basis. The PrimePutt putting green is a fantastic addition to any home, office, or garage. Being able to work on your putting stroke whenever you have a few minutes of free time is a beautiful thing!

This practice mat also comes in incredibly handy during the cold winter months when practicing outside isn’t a viable option. It’s no secret that most golfers get a little bit rusty during the winter due to a lack of practice time. Thankfully, with a putting tool like the PrimePutt putting mat, golfers can keep that rust to an absolute minimum.

What I Like About The PrimePutt Putting Green

I noticed plenty of excellent features about the PrimePutt practice mat as soon as I took it out of the box. Here is a brief list of the pros of this product.

  • Unbelievably Flat: Most putting mats have several air bubbles in them when you first lay them out. That isn’t the case with the PrimePutt mat. It lays flat on the ground as soon as you install it. You won’t have to wait several hours for uneven surfaces to sit flush against the floor.
  • Most Realistic Material: Some of the other mats on the market use materials that are too spongy or flimsy. PrimePutt uses a specific type of astroturf that feels incredibly close to natural grass. This makes for a better overall practice experience. The material is also very resilient, so you won’t have to deal with any annoying footprints on the mat. The high-quality turf is about a half-inch thick and grades in the 10-12 range on the stimp meter.
  • Get a Pure Roll Every Time: I love how my practice putts roll on this mat. The speed feels just like I’m on a real putting green. This is a massive compliment to the Research & Development team at PrimePutt
  • 3 Holes at 1 End: This adds even more convenience. A lot of other practice mats only have 1 hole at the end. That means that once you sink a few putts, there isn’t enough room in the hole for any more golf balls. Having 3 holes instead of 1 alleviates this problem. You’ll spend less time chasing and collecting your golf balls.
  • Golf Balls Sits at Back of Cup: Here is another unique feature that other practice mats don’t offer. When you make a putt, the golf ball automatically sits at the back of the cup instead of the front. This means that you’ll get another clear shot at the hole on your next putt.
  • Cup Depth: Here’s another important feature that not enough folks talk about. How maddening is it when you hit a perfect putt, and it still doesn’t drop in the hole because that cup is too short? You won’t have to worry about that with the PrimePutt mat. The cups are made from the same plastic that’s used to make cups on a real golf course. Putts that are supposed to drop in the cup will do so without any issues.

What I Don’t Like About The PrimePutt Putting Green

As we often mention when doing reviews, there’s no such thing as a perfect product. Even a highly rated golf training aid like that PrimePutt practice green has some areas that it can improve in. Here’s a short list of what I’d like to see changed.

  • It Could be Bigger: To quote the classic movie Roadhouse, “I thought you’d be bigger.” The company sent me a 3 x 9 practice mat to review, and the overall size left a lot to be desired. Because of its small size, I had to stand halfway off the mat for putts aimed at the center or left hole. Thankfully, PrimePutt has remedied this problem because they now offer the mat in 3 x 12 and 3 x 15.
  • Flimsy Flagstick: I had quite a few issues with the flagsticks. For one, they’re pretty top-heavy and will fall out of the cup very easily. They also slip out of the backing plates frequently. The company has since taken steps to fix this problem.

PrimePutt Tour-Quality Indoor Golf Putting Mat Review (2024 Update)

Kolter Knutson

As a product review website geared toward game improvement, Honest Golfers’ review of PrimePutt is a natural fit, especially considering their range of high-quality golf putting aids .

And talk about natural, that’s exactly what PrimePutt’s putting mat feels like.

Roll-Out and Assembly

When the PrimePutt mat was delivered to my front doorstep last month…

primeputt the best tour quality indoor putting mat

…I expected to open the box and pull out a wrinkled mat with curled up corners that I would have to lay out and stack weights on for a week to flatten it and put it to use.

Much to my surprise and excitement, the PrimePutt mat rolled out perfectly flat with no wrinkles, bunches, or curls. This is a credit to the weight of the mat, tour-grade turf used in its construction.

As a person with both limited assembly skills and patience, PrimePutt is the best product you can hope for.

After rolling the mat out, additional assembly includes sliding the cups under the turf, and attaching the PrimePutt backstop to the flexible rubber retainers at the end of the mat.

The entire process was easily under two minutes and is a one-person job.

The Turf: Ball Roll and Feel

primeputt the best tour quality indoor putting mat

But most importantly as every golfer who utilizes a putting mat knows, how does it roll and how does it feel?

In my experience, PrimePutt is the most realistic roll and feel of any putting mat I’ve used. – Honest Golfers

The tour-grade turf replicates a real green exceptionally, and the speed is very reliable.  Other mats I’ve utilized have a less realistic turf feel, and they don’t always lay flat and often bunch or curl, which gives a golfer poor feedback on their stroke.

The sheer weight of the PrimePutt mats prevents this from happening so that it lays flat every time and when you put a good stroke on the ball, you know it.

Vice versa, if you do not stroke it well, PrimePutt will give you true feedback on what you need to work on.

The Cup and Distance Indicators

Their proprietary cup design behaves just like a full-depth cup, meaning misses react like they would on the course, allowing a player to pinpoint improvement areas.

The 3-ft. and 6-ft. buttons on each side of the mat are a much-needed upgrade to the putting mat industry.

Most putting mats are simply a long piece of turf with white paint/stencil drawn on top of the mat for putting distances. I have never been a fan of that design because it is not true to what a golfer’s eye will see on the course.

With PrimePutt, a player knows distances by placing a golf ball at correlated buttons on the mat, but then still has only green putting surface space in their line of sight, to truly simulate putting on the course.

Storage and Durability

Lastly, let’s talk storage and durability.

Storing the PrimePutt is seamless.

It rolls up with ease, and is ready to use as soon as it unrolls…no flattening, weighting down, etc. Meaning you can store it away easily without worrying about wear and tear during storage.

Furthermore, in a house filled with both kids and pets, I need a mat that can stand up to their test. PrimePutt’s mat is pet-friendly, kid-tough, and can even be used outdoors.

Recap: PrimePutt Review

Overall, golfers who want a high-quality mat that rolls true, has a course-like feel, and who value performance and durability, should absolutely check out PrimePutt. It is the best putting mat I have played.

PrimePutt Putting Mat Review

Let it roll, let it roll, let it roll.

tyler-fitzel-dp

Tyler Fitzel Professional club fitter and author at Independent Golf Reviews

primeputt the best tour quality indoor putting mat

I practiced with the PrimePutt Putting Mat for 6 weeks.  It made a great addition to my living room, office, kitchen, bedroom, and garage over that time.  I was able to roll putts wherever and whenever I found time to practice.  This simple yet incredibly well designed putting mat works everywhere and yet can be rolled up to be put away when not in use.

This is the definitive PrimePutt Putting Mat Review for 2023.

IMG_9456

The weather outside is frightful, but indoor putting is delightful. And since we want to practice for next season, let it roll, let it roll, let it roll.

Real grass is where we play the game, but winter brings a large part of the country little to no golf outside. Living in the snow covered part of the midwest, my practice options are indoors. Golf simulators have a niche and in recent years we’ve seen more and more companies join the ranks for commercial or personal use, but the one thing that most simulators don’t capture well is putting. I’ve used several options over the years and PrimePutt Putting Mats is the latest to find the balance with realistic surfaces and practical putting options.

primeputt the best tour quality indoor putting mat

Set up is super easy to get rolling. The PrimePutt mat is rolled up with all you need in the box.  You will get a tour-grade turf mat that gives the same feedback as a grass green. Three innovative multi-make cups that hold up to 4 putts in a row. A walnut custom-engineered backstop that keeps missed putts out of the way and three premium walnut flagsticks for elegant and easy ball retrieval.

primeputt the best tour quality indoor putting mat

PrimePutt Turf mat is a durable ½” thick tour grade material that rolls about 10-12 on the stimp meter. The turf is also a no-memory material that lays down flat, so rolling it up or rolling it out, it is ready instantly. This is the most realistic non-grass turf I’ve ever putted. There is a slight cushion in the materials, which makes the ball mimic a real grass green. PrimePutt has a putting surface that is unlike any other I’ve seen on the market. Amassing options for the design and the material was thoughtfully crafted and came from wanting a high standard to practice putting.

primeputt the best tour quality indoor putting mat

PrimePutt has created “Game-changing cups”

I have yet to see this level of innovation in a practice mat when it comes to the target. Not only are the cups made from the same plastic used to make the cups we see in the hole on a real golf course, each cup can hold up to 4 golf balls at a time. Also, the backstop of the cup acts like a real full-depth golf hole, so makes go in and misses do not. On top of that, like many practice greens we use before we play, the walnut stick is a ball retriever so you don’t have to bend over again and again.

primeputt the best tour quality indoor putting mat

There are four PrimePutt Mat sizes to choose from:

  • Compact 1.5’ x 9’ with one cup
  • Standard 3’ x 9’ with three cups
  • XL 3’ x 12’ with three cups
  • XXl  3’ x 15’ with three cups

Customization is also available by setting up an appointment to discuss options for a particular space or design that you may have in mind.

If your weather outside if frightful, then stay inside where PrimePutt is delightful.  While you can sing, let it snow, let it snow, let is snow, your putter will sing; let it roll, let it roll, let it roll.  The PrimePutt Putting Mat is one of the most innovative golf products I’ve seen, yet incredibly simplistic.  Not everyone can have an outdoor putting green (like iGolfReview south).  For those of us in the northern states, we need something indoors and this is as good as it gets.  This premium, tour-grade turf and innovative design creates the most realistic putting mat that seamlessly goes from storage to ready for game-time practice in seconds.

PrimePutt Putting Mat Review

PrimePutt Putting Mat Review: Realistic Feel at Home

Do you want to make more putts and shoot lower scores? Then you need a PrimePutt putting mat to work on your short game at home.

PrimePutt putting mats have made a splash in the golf world with their realistic turf like design. They’re endorsed by PGA players, coaches, and tons of amateur golfers.

Let’s see what makes this putting mat truly unique in a crowded market of  indoor putting greens .

PrimePutt Putting Mat

Key takeaways .

  • An indoor putting green can help you with confidence on short range putts.
  • But some putting mats are nothing more than green carpet that don’t mimic real grass.
  • PrimePutt is a premier putting mat that is one of the best choices to practice putting at home thanks to their real turf like design.
  • Plus, they have multiple sizes, realistic cups, and fold up for easy storage.

Tour Grade Turf

Arguably the most important part of an at home putting mat is the turf itself. If you’ve ever putted on one, you know that each mat or at home putting green isn’t created equal.

Some brands use foam, others use a form of turf, some are more like carpet, and others use Nylon Turf (like this one). The turf is crucial to making the most of your putting practice as some are more like carpet than a real putting green. But this design is one of the best options out there and will help make each session feel like you’re on the golf course.

PrimePutt Putting Mat Review

According to PrimePutt,  “Our putting mat uses half-inch tour grade nylon turf to best replicate an authentic outdoor putting green. Our no-memory material also ensures that the amy lays flat even after being rolled up and stored for long periods.”

These putting mats also come with a backstop too. This hardwood backstop makes it easier to keep long putts from bouncing back and makes it easy to store extra golf balls during practice too.

Additionally, you can use this putting mat on any surface, it’s best to use it on a hard surface like hardwood or flooring. This will give it the most realistic feel possible. If you only have carpet, they also offer a custom standing pad to help minimize mat movement too.

Multiple Sizing Options

Most practice putting mats have one or two sizes but the PrimePutt has four options. You can choose from:

  • Compact: 1.5 x 9 feet
  • Standard: 3 x 9 feet
  • XL: 3 x 12 feet
  • XXL: 3 x 15 feet

The compact design is great for apartments or adding a putting green to your office (please note this option only has one hole while the rest have three cups). Additionally, these mats also have distance markers every three feet to dial in your speed from crucial short range distances.

PrimePutt Review

Regardless of what size you buy there is no assembly required either.  PrimePutt is ready to go as soon as you take it out of the box. Roll it out, insert the cups, and start making putts.

Game-Changing Cups

Another reason we loved this putting mat is the cup design.

With a lot of putting mats they don’t have any sort of cup making it hard to simulate a real practice session. Others are elevated which isn’t great as the putting surface is raised – which isn’t realistic to the golf course.

But with the PrimePutt mat you can sink up to four putts in a row with their cup design. As they said on their website,  “This means you can take more putts in a row without stopping to retrieve the ball from the cup. In addition to adding convenience and reducing setup time, our painstakingly-developed cup design perfectly recreates the experience of a full-depth cup.”

These are the same cups that you’ll find on a golf course making it a more realistic putting session than ever. The proprietary ramp helps move your balls to leave the front open and keep practicing without interruption.

PrimePutt Putting Mat Cups

Recommended Training Aids

The PrimePutt mats have everything you need to start practicing your putting at home. But if you want even more effective practice sessions check out some of our favorite training aids below.

Pro Path Putting Mirror

To practice with purpose at home check out the Pro Path Putting Mirror. This is way better than a normal putting mirror that only focuses on eye alignment. While that’s important to having the proper setup, this mirror does even more.

The Pro Path putting mirror is bigger than an average putting mirror so you can check your shoulder alignment too. This will ensure that your body lines are square to your start line and more likely to hit a solid putt. It also has a built-in putting arc to visually guide your stroke.

It’s one of the best putting training aids out there and incredibly well-designed.  Click here to read our full review.

Devil Ball

If you want to make putting “devilishly” hard, the Devil Ball from PuttOut is a great choice. It’s a unique design that is the same as a golf ball but it’s not circular. Instead, it has flat edges which require a perfect stroke to get it rolling properly.

For example, if you hit it with an open face the ball will instantly shoot right. This makes short putts twice as hard but will help you focus and dial in your stroke in practice. Plus, there are different levels of difficulty making it a great choice for all types of players.

Click here to read our full review of the Devil Ball training aid.

Pelz Putting Tutor

Dave Pelz and Phil Mickelson created this unique training aid which is great for at home or outdoor putting practice. The Pelz Putting Tutor provides instant feedback if you push/pull the putt and will help get your ball started on the proper line. Like the Devil Ball, it also has different settings to help all types of players.

FAQs About Putting Mats

Do you have more questions about putting mats? Keep scrolling through the most frequently asked questions and answers now.

What are the best drills to use for indoor putting?

Since most mats are less than 10-feet long it’s important to dial in your short putts. Check out our guide to  best putting drills here .

Does PrimePutt offer a guarantee?

Yes, they offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. Send it back within 30-days to get your money back – no questions asked!

Can you use these greens on carpet?

Yes, but it’s recommended to purchase the 1 x 2 standing pad which you’ll place next to the mat. Works for right or left-handed golfers and ensures you get in the right setup at address position.

Prime Putt Review

My Experience

I’ve tried out all sorts of putting mats and this one stands out as one of the best for a few reasons. First, it has a realistic roll that most other putting greens simply don’t offer. The majority feel like you’re putting on glorified green carpet vs. an actual green.

The second reason is that it’s easy to store and lays flat every single time. No humps or poor feedback to get in your way during practice. Plus it’s easy to set up and store. Just roll it up with the turf facing out (I put mine back in the original shipping box) and then pull it out when you are ready to use again.

Finally, its speed is just right at about a 10 on the stimpmeter. Some putting mats (like the  BirdieBall ) are almost too fast and not realistic to most public golf courses. With its solid price, it’s one of the best options in golf.  After using mine to warm up at home, I go out to my home course and I find that the speed translates perfectly to my course.

Final Thoughts

If you need a great indoor putting mat, this one from PrimePutt is a great option. While it’s not the cheapest option by any means, its realistic feel makes it worth the price.

Here’s a quick recap of the biggest benefits:

  • Easy to store.
  • Multiple sizing options.
  • Distance markers every three feet.
  • Proprietary cup designs replicate full-depth holes.
  • Real green speed (between 9-11 on the Stimpmeter).

The 7 Best Putting Mats to Help You Sharpen Your Stroke

PrimePutt is one of the best putting mats of today

  • DESCRIPTION PrimePutt is one of the best putting mats of today
  • SOURCE Nick Heidelberger

There’s no excuse not to practice your putting on a regular basis. You can practice putting day or night, indoors or out, year-round. On top of that, the best putting mats out there today are more life-like than ever, and give you all the reps and feedback you need to save strokes. No matter what your space or budget allows – from under $100 to over $600 – you can find an excellent putting mat to help your game.

I personally tested seven of the best and most popular putting mats out there today. Here’s everything you need to know to select the best putting mat for you.

How We Tested the Best Putting Mats

To test today’s best putting mats, I looked for a few important criteria, then evaluated the standout features each specific mat offers.

One of the most important elements of a good putting mat is that it lays out flat. It’s nearly impossible to get quality putting practice in on a mat that’s full of ridges from being rolled up.

Next, I looked for how well the ball rolls on the mat. I’m looking for a mat that rolls smooth, rolls true, and rolls like a real putting green.

Finally, I evaluated each mat’s differentiating features. The optional half-sized hole on the Perfect Practice mat, and the built-in games, feedback, and connectivity of PUTTR instantly got me hooked on practicing with each. Any feature that makes me want to practice putting more is ultimately going to help me become a better putter simply because I’ll spend more time practicing.

Here are the seven of the top putting mats of 2024.

PrimePutt Putting Mat

Primeputt Putting Mat life tested

  • DESCRIPTION Primeputt Putting Mat life tested

Why have more putting mat makers not questioned the ramp that leads up to the hole before? If we’re being honest, when your putt hits a steep slope as it’s losing speed just before the make-or-miss moment of truth, it’s kind of tough to get real feedback.

This, in my opinion, is the biggest differentiating factor of the PrimePutt putting mat. There is no ramp, no slope. Your putts are completely flat and straight. However, there are drop-in holes, giving you a real-life result of every putt. At just one-half-inch thick, you’re not standing on a platform in order to get that performance, and you can easily stand either on or off the mat while practicing on the PrimePutt.

This might sound simple, but I think this is a huge deal in a good putting mat.

If the flat nature of the PrimePutt mat is its biggest asset, its roll is a close second. PrimePutt uses a nylon turf that emulates a real putting green, and after testing several putting mats, I’m comfortable saying no other mat rolls closer to a real green than PrimePutt. PrimePutt says the mat rolls at a 10 on the Stimpmeter, and although I don’t have my own Stimp to verify this, that feels pretty accurate to me.

To compare PrimePutt’s roll to its competitors, some of the competition uses a velvety surface, which rolls smoother and no doubt provides a satisfying putting experience, but I’ve never used the word velvety to describe how the greens at the golf courses I play roll. That’s why I say the PrimePutt delivers the most realistic putting experience. It’s not the smoothest, it’s the most realistic.

Another feature I really like about the PrimePutt mat is the wooden bumper that goes behind the holes. Aside from simply making putts, I like working on speed when I practice putting, and that bumper is a great barometer for practicing speed.

The PrimePutt mat rolls up surprisingly easily, and it’s also tough enough for outdoor use, as long as you don’t leave it out in the elements.

  • Putt drops into the hole
  • No slope/ramp approaching the hole
  • Indoor/outdoor use
  • True results (misses don’t rebound in, makes don’t carum out)
  • Bumper past the hole with ball rack
  • Distance markers are a nice touch without being distracting
  • While the roll is true to real life, the grainy surface is not as satisfying as some of the velvety competitors

PUTTR AI-powered smart putting green

  • DESCRIPTION PUTTR AI-powered smart putting green
  • PERMISSION Permission given by Nick Heidelberger

The PUTTR is unlike any other putting mat or practice putting green out there. That’s because the PUTTR adds some serious gamification and technology to a premium putting surface.

The AI-powered PUTTR uses an 80-frames-per-second camera to track every rotation of your putt and deliver feedback, stat-tracking and competition that no other putting mat can offer.

With more than 50 games and drills in the connected PUTTR app, plus global leaderboards and stat-tracking, practicing on PUTTR is seriously addicting. If you’re looking to shave strokes, that’s a good thing. But even if you’re more interested in some friendly competition than grinding over your PUTTR handicap, games like Cricket, Beer Pong and Around the World deliver for golfers and non-golfers alike.

The putting surface itself on the PUTTR is incredibly smooth and satisfying. Checking in at an 11 on the Stimpmeter, PUTTR delivers a slightly faster roll than the PrimePutt mat mentioned above. PUTTR does, however, have a ramp leading into the hole, which affects how hard you must hit each putt. And yes, that premium green rolls out and lays flat straight out of the box. No bumps or ridges to contend with. On top of that, it all rolls nicely into the luxurious-looking metal box for easy storage.

  • Engaging and addicting putting practice
  • Results and stat tracking
  • Fun for golfers and non-golfers
  • Global leaderboards
  • Built-in games and drills
  • Routine updates and improvements
  • Some features, like tournaments and personalized training, require subscription
  • Some misses roll into the back of the hole

PUTTR Review: Is the Smart Putting Green Worth the Price?

Perfect Practice Putting Mat

Perfect Practice putting mat

  • DESCRIPTION Perfect Practice putting mat

Check Amazon

Perfect Practice, the putting mat with Dustin Johnson on the box, is one of the most popular options on the market today because it offers some premium features, yet checks in at a more palatable price than the truly luxurious competition.

I found putting with the Perfect Practice mat to be a different experience than any other mat. The train-track markings and centerline make the Perfect Practice mat the best option for improving your putting mechanics, especially if you’re trying to hone a straight-back-straight-through stroke.

Regardless of your stroke type, you’ll see exactly when and where your putts fall offline, if at all. And if your putts don’t fall offline, step up to the half-sized hole and work on draining putts in the dead center.

All of these features make for really efficient putting practice, and for around $150, depending on which model you choose, the Perfect Practice is much more affordable than some of the top-end options. However, that value comes with a couple tradeoffs.

First of all, the Perfect Practice mat did not roll out flat for me out of the box. In the box, the mat was wrapped around the end with the holes, which resulted in creases and ridges that significantly affected the putting mat’s performance.

Second, the slope at the end of the mat is more severe on the Perfect Practice mat than any other mat I tested. That sloped killed too many well-struck dead-center putts, leaving them one revolution short before sending them right back to my feet. Even though the mat rolls true at a satisfying speed, I felt like I had to smash 6-footers just to get them to the cup.

  • Half-sized hole option is addicting and gives a lot of confidence
  • Markings provide great feedback on stroke and line of the putt
  • Marked distances are nice
  • Ball drops into the hole quietly and the ball return is as smooth as can be
  • Roll is smooth when you find a flat spot
  • Hash marks every inch is excessive
  • Too many markings on the putting surface
  • Does not roll out flat out of the box
  • Ramp leading up to the hole is too steep and kills speed more than any other mat we tested

Odyssey Putting Mat

Odyssey putting mat from above

  • DESCRIPTION Odyssey Putting Mat

Odyssey’s putting mat is one of the most popular on Amazon, and after putting it to the test, I can see why. The first thing I noticed is the velvety surface provides a really good roll. And, even though there is a ramp to accommodate real hoes for your ball to drop into, it’s the least severe of any that I’ve tested, and therefore interferes with your putts the least. Given how nice the roll on this mat is, I’d almost say that slope is a non-factor. Finally, this Odyssey green comes with a shim so you can add break when and where you want, which can take your putting practice up a notch.

I tested the 12x3 size Odyssey putting mat, and I liked that variety of putts you can practice on that sized mat. And, at around $150, it’s a very good value mat. However, like the other lower-priced mats, there are some trade-offs.

Life Tested Odyssey putting mat

My Odyssey putting mat doesn't lay flat without weights

  • DESCRIPTION Life Tested Odyssey putting mat

First and foremost, I could not get the Odyssey putting mat to lay flat. While the majority of the mat sits on the floor nicely, the foam backing underneath the holes at the end of that mat held its roll after I unrolled the mat. I had to use weights to weigh down the end for testing.

There is also no bumper at the end of this mat. That might seem like a small issue, but when you’re practicing longer putts, 10 to 12-footers on this mat, you’re going to roll some past the hole, and and simple backstop is really handy. Finally, this putting green has five holes cut into it, which I found to be a bit excessive, though you can simply fill any holes with the plugs provided.

  • Really good roll
  • Comes with foam shim to add break
  • 12-foot length allows practicing longer-range putts
  • Doesn’t lay flat – weight needed for the side with holes
  • Five holes is excessive
  • Some misses roll in the back of the hole

Breaking Ball Putting Mat

Breaking Ball Putting Mat and weighted golf balls

  • DESCRIPTION Life Tested Breaking Ball Putting Mat

We go from one putting mat that allows you to practice breaking putts, to one that all but requires it. The Breaking Ball putting mat from Me and My Golf is a one-of-a-kind putting mat that emphasizes breaking putts.

The mat comes with three weighted balls that, when stroked, replicate varying degrees of break. The mat itself is marked with target lines for each break. If you hit the putt on the right line with good speed, it’ll break right into the hole. I spent hours testing and practicing on the Breaking Ball mat, and it’s really good at getting you comfortable with starting lines for breaking putts. Plus, when you use a regular ball on the mat, it performs just like any putting mat.

I also love that the mat is marked with a speed zone at the end, which also helps you learn how to hit putts with the ideal speed.

As for the putting mat itself, the roll on the Breaking Ball mat is smooth and satisfying. However, there is no actual hole in at the end of the mat, simply a target. While this is nice for using the speed markings beyond the hole, I always like to see my good putts actually drop. Second, there is no bumper beyond the hole, so you’ll want to bump the mat up against a wall or lay a couple books or something at the end of the mat to prevent runaway golf balls.

  • Unique opportunity to train breaking putts
  • Great roll on the mat
  • Great value
  • Marks on the mat entice you to train speed and accuracy
  • Great value compared to some of the premium competitors
  • No bumpers and no hole
  • Design of the mat is non-traditional and could be distracting

Putt-A-Bout

Putt-A-Bout putting mat

Check Putt-A-Bout Check Amazon

There are plenty of putting mats and putting greens that offer all sorts of bells and whistles and cool features, and most of them are actually really effective and clever. But what if you just want a nice piece of turf to practice your putting, without all the extras? Well, you’re in luck, because the Putt-A-Bout is not only great for simply rolling putts, but it’s also great on your budget.

At under $100, the Putt-A-Bout green offers an 11-by-3-foot putting surface that rolls smooth and true. It comes with two movable above-ground targets that sit securely on the mat, but also move wherever you want them.

You’ll have to come up with your own solution for bumpers, and create your own rules for counting makes and misses on the above-ground holes, but this is good old-fashioned blue-collar putting practice at its finest, and if that’s what you want, this is your mat.

  • Long enough to practice the important putts
  • Ability to adjust targets
  • Mostly lays flat (edges curl slightly)
  • Backing grips the floor nicely
  • Basic, straightforward, serviceable mat to practice putting

Check Birdie Ball

The Birdie Ball putting mat is the only mat on this list that I don’t personally own, but I’ve still probably stroked over 100 putts on various Birdie Ball mats over the last couple years, and it would be criminal to leave the Biride Ball mat off of this list.

The truth is, Birdie Ball putting mats deliver many of the same benefits that the aforementioned PrimePutt mat offers. It lies flat on the ground, has a hole for your ball to drop into, and doesn’t have a ramp. Meanwhile, its unique putting surface rolls true.

The Birdie Ball putting surface, however, is a little different than the Prime Putt surface. It is more of a foam-like texture, as if they somehow turned a pool noodle into a premium putting mat. No matter how that sounds to you, I’m here to tell you that it works brilliantly.

The other great thing about Birdie Ball mats is that you can get them in all shapes and sizes, and even customize where, and how many, holes come in your mat.

  • Ball drops in hole
  • Rolls true, pick your speed
  • Additional shims for break available
  • Variety of sizes available to fit any space
  • Foam-like surface can rip, tear, or warp over time

10 Best Indoor Putting Mats of 2024

You’ve probably heard that the best way to improve your putting game is to practice, but for most people, getting out to the golf course frequently enough to see a noticeable improvement is nearly impossible.

That’s where indoor putting mats come in. Investing in a set for your home or office can make a huge difference to your putting ability and overall golf game. Still, choosing the right product for your budget, skill level, and available space is a challenging task. Arguably more important, you want something that approximates the surface you’re going to be playing on and will stand up to the test of time; otherwise, any practice you do indoors will have little to no carryover to your actual game.

To help you choose—and avoid wasting your time and money—we’ve put together a list of the 10 best putting mats so you can start improving your putt from the comfort of your home or office. Although PrimePutt’s indoor putting mat was our clear winner overall, several of the products on this list offer unique, niche features that may appeal more to certain golfers.

Top 10 At-Home Putting Mats

If you’re investing the money and space to install an indoor putting mat , you want to ensure you’re getting it right. And, while you could easily spend a couple of days searching through individual customer reviews and product pages, it’s safe to say you have something better to do with that time (like working on your swing). So, in order to simplify the process, we’ve compiled a list of putting mats that are the best of the best.

1. PrimePutt Putting Mat

details

  • Durable, high-quality tour-grade turf that closely resembles the surface and speed of a real green
  • Several practice holes for a variety of practice shots and a no-block backstop
  • Cups mimic the performance of a full-depth golf hole and allow you to sink four putts before retrieval
  • Attractive design and high-end appearance
  • Easy to clean and store, yet lays flat every time
  • Due to their popularity, certain models are sometimes out of stock
  • Doesn’t offer computerized feedback on your putt via an app

Although this list is full of high-quality contenders, the best putting mat, in our opinion, has to be the PrimePutt Putting Mat . The mat of choice for PGA star Sean O’Hair, the Prime Putt’s biggest asset is that it has the most realistic turf and feels the closest to practicing on an actual golf course.

For the Standard, XL, and XXL models, there are three different holes to practice with, which adds variety without requiring you to buy a massive mat that takes up your entire room. And for homes and offices with minimal space, the Compact model provides an excellent one-hole option.

With a 9-11 stimp rating (10-12 for the Tour version), the green speed of the PrimePutt mat is just right—not slow enough to mess up your swing, but not so fast that you feel like you’re playing on hardwood floors. It lays flat on any surface and has just the right thickness.

PrimePutt’s innovative cups are incredibly well-designed, allowing you to sink up to four putts before having to retrieve the balls. Though at first glance they may seem significantly different from the holes you’re used to, these cups do an excellent job of performing like a real full-depth golf hole, so the putts you would have made on a real green go in and the misses don’t. Even better: their well-designed backstop prevents missed shots from blocking your next putt.

In addition to being a fantastic tool for shaving strokes off your golf game, the PrimePutt mat is of exceptional quality. The walnut finish and clean lines set this putting mat apart from its competitors. Although it’s very portable and easy to roll up, this is a mat that you’ll actually want to display in your home or office!

Bottom Line: The PrimePutt putting mat is a gorgeous, high-quality mat for a reasonable price. It’s cleverly designed, rolls well, and feels like you have an actual putting green in your living room.

When pro golfer Zac Radford compared putting mats head-to-head, PrimePutt was the clear standout. Exclusive reader offer! Use promo code PUTTMORE to slice 10% off your PrimePutt indoor putting mat.

2. Perfect Practice Putting Mat

details

  • Very good quality for the price
  • Automatic ball return keeps you hitting longer
  • Available in different sizes to fit various space requirements
  • Turf is slightly less realistic than the PrimePutt
  • Can be challenging to make it lay entirely flat

Although the green isn’t as realistic as the turf on the PrimePutt, the Perfect Practice Putting Mat is a respectable alternative. With a useful two-hole design (one regulation and one reduced cup), the auto-return feature will send your ball back to you whether you make your putt or not, allowing you to keep practicing without frequent interruptions to retrieve your ball.

There are a couple of versions of the Perfect Practice mat (including a one-ball compact version and an extra-long mat), so you have several options to choose from depending on your space requirements. It’s suitable for both right-hand and left-handed golfers of all abilities and offers helpful lines to improve your accuracy, though this does make it less aesthetically pleasing.

The Perfect Practice Mat has a pretty well-made green, though it doesn’t always lay flat without extra steam ironing. Nevertheless, the Perfect Practice Putting Matt is a solid choice for an affordable price.

Bottom Line: Although it doesn’t offer the same realistic feel as the PrimePutt, the Perfect Practice mat is a well-made alternative with useful features and a reasonable price tag.

3. WellPutt Mat

details

  • Visual aids built into the mat help with alignment, positioning, and amplitude
  • Smartphone app provides dozens of practice exercises
  • Simplistic design means it rolls up and stores easily
  • Budget-friendly
  • No backstop, automatic ball return, or drop-in holes
  • Turf doesn’t feel much like being on a real putting green

The Classic Wellputt Mat is a decent choice if you’re looking for a budget option, though you lose some quality and features with the price drop. That said, the visual aids on this mat are very useful for diagnosing putting problems—it doesn’t get much clearer than “Good Zone” and “Bad Zone”! The markings are designed to help improve your alignment, positioning, and stroke amplitude. The Wellputt smartphone app, which is compatible with both iOS and Android devices, provides a useful practice framework with 54 exercises designed to hone your putting skills.

Although the Wellputt lacks the convenience of features such as a backstop or automatic ball return, the simplistic design makes the mat very easy to store. The Wellputt rolls up like a giant yoga mat, which is a nice feature if you’re short on space.

For the price, the turf feels decent, although you’ll never forget that you’re using a putting mat and not a real green, especially since the holes are simply circular markings on the mat, as opposed to drop-in cups.

Bottom Line: If you don’t need features such as drop-in cups or automatic ball rollback, the Wellputt mat is a solid budget option with a useful smartphone app.

details

  • Offers very specific feedback and computerized stats on your putting performance
  • Built-in training routines, games, and competitions make putting practice more interesting, encouraging you to keep practicing
  • Unusual, high-tech design
  • Significantly more expensive than many other putting mats
  • Not everyone will want to make use of the computerized feedback system

If you’re looking for something a bit different, PUTTR is a unique way to practice putting. Unlike most at-home putting sets, which are relatively low-tech, PUTTR is a “smart” putting green that offers computerized ball tracking and a wide range of games.

If you golf regularly but aren’t sure what you need to do to improve your putting, PUTTR can be a game changer. The computer in the PUTTR mat tracks your lines and gives you feedback for improving your shots.

The PUTTR mat also offers a wide range of fun games and challenges that will keep things fresh and interesting, encouraging you to come back and practice. There are even multiplayer games so that you can challenge your friends, family, or colleagues. With so many practice options to choose from, you’re unlikely to get bored or fall into a rut.

This all sounds amazing, but there’s a bit of a catch—PUTTR costs $599.99. Perhaps the price tag isn’t surprising considering the advanced technology and the interactive features, but casual golfers may find it hard to justify buying such an expensive piece of equipment that you can’t bring to the course. And not everyone will be particularly interested in the computerized feedback, preferring a more traditional approach to putting practice, which makes the PUTTR a bit more advanced than it needs to be.

The Bottom Line: The PUTTR mat is a unique choice, and you won’t find anything else like it on the market. If you have the money and space for PUTTR, this smart putting mat will keep you working on your putt for a long time.

5. Birdie Ball

details

  • Customizable options
  • Unique patented turf design is very similar to a real green
  • Informative website
  • Unless you know exactly what you want, customizing your own green can be a confusing and overwhelming process
  • BirdieBall greens lack visual aids or a smartphone app

BirdieBall boasts an impressive inventory of pre-made indoor and outdoor putting mats, offering a wide range of dimensions and depths. The products tend to be high quality, which is also reflected in the price, especially for the more permanent double-depth greens, which can’t be rolled up and moved. BirdieBall has a patented turf manufacturing process featuring a spongy sub-base with grass-like nubs. All this effort pays off in a putting mat that feels a lot like a real green.

The area where the company sets itself apart most is its customizable greens. If you choose a customized putting green , you’ll have a lot of decisions to make, from size, number of cups, green speed, hole location, contour shims, and hole reduction inserts. This is great if you know exactly what you want, but having to make so many decisions can be overwhelming, especially for more amateur golfers who might also prefer features like visual aids or a paired smartphone app. Luckily, there’s a useful virtual assistant on the website that can help you narrow down your choices.

Bottom Line: BirdieBall’s customizable indoor putting greens are a great choice if you are an experienced golfer who knows exactly what you want your putting mat to look like.

6. PutterBall

details

  • Portable, lightweight, and easy to set up and pack away
  • Provides a fun and social way to practice putting
  • Includes all the equipment you need to start playing
  • Not designed for serious putting practice
  • Quite expensive considering it is a novelty

Admittedly, PutterBall is very different from the other products on this list. A golf coach certainly wouldn’t recommend it for serious players hoping to hone their short game and shave strokes off their score. However, PutterBall is a great choice if you’re looking for a fun and social way to casually practice putting.

The PutterBall mat is described as a “golf pong game,” and for those familiar with beer pong, it’s obvious why. The green features six holes on each end of a sizable mat, arranged in a pyramid shape, just like in beer pong. Everything you need to get started is included, including two putters, two golf balls, and hole covers (these are for covering the hole after a putt is made).

PutterBall isn’t cheap, but it’s well-designed and easy to use. It packs up quickly and is relatively lightweight, so you can set it up on pretty much any surface at any indoor or outdoor event. The turf itself provides a decent roll, as you would expect, considering the hefty price tag. And, because it’s made of high-density foam, it’s built to last, even with constant use from golfers of all ages and abilities.

Bottom Line: PutterBall is a great party game that anyone can play, but if you want to improve your putting ability, it won’t replace your need for a more “serious” putting mat.

7. Asgens Putting Green Mat

details

  • Reasonable price and 365-day warranty
  • When it works correctly, the automatic ball return allows you to make the most efficient use of your practice time
  • Easy to roll up and store
  • Requires uphill putting to accommodate the automatic ball return
  • Not particularly large – less than 10 ft long and less than 1 ft
  • Roll is slightly slow, even on hardwood floors

If you’re interested in a reasonably-priced mat that maximizes the efficiency of your putting practice, the Asgens Putting Green Mat could be right for you. The most notable feature of this mat is the automatic ball return system, which ensures that the majority of your putts conveniently roll back to you. Although this feature doesn’t work every single time—and there’s no backstop to handle wayward putts—it’s still worth the investment.

This is quite a narrow mat, with a width of under 12 inches. It’s not particularly long, either, at just 9.8 feet. Of course, this will be appealing to potential customers with limited space. While this makes it a good choice for an office putting set, it doesn’t give you much variety for setting up your puts from different angles.

Instead, this is a good mat if you are short on time and want to keep putting over and over to hone your shots and practice your alignment. With two different colors of grass and two holes of different sizes, there’s just enough variation to keep things interesting. The line down the center of the dark green track (going towards the smaller hole) is an especially helpful visual aid.

This mat has a few shortcomings, which is not that surprising for a product with a fairly low price point. The turf on the Asgens mat rolls slightly slower than you would expect, even on hardwood floors. It also requires all of your putts to be made on a fairly steep upslope in order to accommodate the automatic ball return.

Bottom Line: Although it’s relatively small, the Asgens putting mat is a good value, easy-to-use product that offers golfers the opportunity to efficiently practice their putting, thanks to the automatic ball return.

8. Pinstripe Golf Putting Mat Indoor Studio

details

  • Pinstripes, Aim Board, and Swing Mat provide instant feedback
  • Due to its small size, it’s very portable and easy to roll out
  • Cleverly designed putting cup only catches putts with ideal speed and aim; otherwise, they bounce out
  • Only 8 feet in length – too short for practicing long putts
  • Doesn’t offer any extras (e.g. practice drills, smartphone app, stats, multiplayer functionality)

While it lacks the bells and whistles of many of its competitors, the Pinstripe Golf Putting Mat Indoor Studio offers four putting aids in one straightforward at-home putting set. If you are already knowledgeable about the mechanics of putting and want a set to help you improve various elements of your short game simultaneously, this is a respectable choice.

The key component is the putting mat itself, which features a unique pinstripe design. In addition to looking classy, the pinstripes are useful for lining up putts. The mat itself has a relatively quick roll, approximating a medium-fast green, so it provides useful real-world preparation.

The other three components—the Swing Mat, Aim Board, and cup—look deceptively simple but have been designed to offer feedback on different elements of your putting game. The Swing Mat is great for squaring your putter face (and is removable so you can take it to the course), while the cup lets you know how you’re doing with speed (excessively fast putts will bounce out). The Aim Board, which also serves as a backstop, works with the pinstripes to give you feedback on your degree of accuracy.

Due to its small size and streamlined layout, this is one of the easiest putting mats to set up and pack away, though it’s also unobtrusive enough to keep unrolled on a more permanent basis. It has a thick rubber bottom, making it suitable for both carpet and bare floors, though you may notice a marginally slower roll on carpet.

Bottom Line: With putting aids for improving aim, speed, and swing, the Pinstripe Golf putting mat is designed for experienced golfers who want to improve quickly without getting bogged down in computerized stats or smartphone apps.

9. Facy Indoor/Outdoor Putting Green

details

  • The unusual, eye-catching design is likely to appeal to younger golfers
  • Artificial grass fringe and bunker around the edges facilitate chipping practice
  • Thick rubber backing makes it suitable for indoor and outdoor use
  • Cups are very shallow, so balls don’t stay there after putts are made
  • “Mini golf” appearance is likely to polarize customers
  • Getting the mat to lay completely flat is a challenge

If you’re looking for a putting mat that visually stands out, the Facy Indoor/Outdoor Putting Green might fit the bill. Rather than the long, narrow shape of most at-home putting mats, the Facy mat is significantly wider, with three stainless steel cups positioned toward the edges of the green.

Although designed as a tool for putting practice, this mat has the appearance of a mini golf hole, which is likely to appeal to some customers and disappoint others. The Facy mat can be set up either indoors or outdoors, thanks to a thick rubber base that is surprisingly waterproof.

One of its unique features is a fringe of longer artificial grass around the edges, facilitating chipping practice. There’s also a tiny bunker. Customers can choose between the 4 ft x 10 ft and 5 ft x 10 ft models, depending on their space requirements. You can also customize the mat by using the grass inserts to cover up certain holes or placing the foam slope pad underneath to create a gradient.

The Facy mat is designed to roll up and lay flat, though—and this is one of its biggest shortcomings—it’s hard to completely remove the creases. Another design weakness is how shallow the cups are. Balls tend to bounce or roll out after a putt, which is frustrating considering how much you’ll pay for this product.

Bottom Line: With high-quality turf, a decent roll, and an unusual appearance resembling a mini golf hole, the Facy putting mat is an appealing indoor/outdoor option that’s let down slightly by the hefty price tag, shallow cups, and the tendency not to lay flat.

10. ProAdvanced ProInfinity Putting Mat

details

  • Includes numerous accessories for customizing your mat, including slope creators and foam wedges
  • By brushing the mat fibers in a certain direction, you can switch between four stimp speeds ranging from 8 - 12.5
  • The visible ball trace allows you to see the precise route of your putt
  • The numerous extra features and customization options may be overwhelming for novice players
  • Requires a fairly technical understanding of putting concepts and terminology

If you’re ready to get technical about improving your putting, the ProAdvanced ProInfinity Putting Mat gives you the tools you need to identify weaknesses in your short game. The numerous lines and markings on this mat may be intimidating to novice golfers, but more advanced players will undoubtedly relish the opportunity to carefully analyze their putting.

The ProAdvanced mat comes with numerous accessories, allowing you to customize the mat for dozens of slope and speed combinations. This makes the ProAdvanced ProInfinity a solid choice for a couple or a family, as each person can set up the mat to accommodate their unique level and practice goals.

There are two slope creators and six additional foam wedges for creating a variety of gradients. You can use the included mat roller to adjust the green speed to any of four different stimp ratings, ranging from a relatively slow 8 to a lightning-fast professional 12.5. Whatever their level, players will appreciate the visible ball trace, which allows you to analyze the precise path of your putt.

The alignment mirror (a new accessory just added to the 2022 version), three putting gates, 25 training bands, and 45 tee points can help you make the most of your practice sessions with this mat. You’ll receive a training book with over 100 different drills, and you can also set up the ProAdvanced ProInfinity for various multiplayer challenges and games.

Bottom Line: If you’re a knowledgeable golfer who isn’t deterred by the complexity of this mat, the versatility of the ProAdvanced ProInfinity is likely to win you over.

Why You Should Use a Putting Mat

The most significant factor in improving your golf game is practice. Many people put significant time and effort into practicing their drives and iron shots, but when it comes down to it, putting is one of the most important aspects of golf.

Your putting strokes account for nearly half of your strokes in a game. Think about all the putts you’ve just missed and what your score could have been if you’d made them. That’s the kind of improvement you can get from a good practice putting mat.

According to golf instructor and former PGA pro Dave Stockton, the key to a better putt is to be confident . But it’s hard to be confident without being consistent, and to build consistency, you have to practice and put in the hours . Consistency can be difficult for golfers to achieve due to time and logistical constraints.

When you’re considering your next gear purchase, think about whether an indoor putting green is right for you. It’s one of the best and most convenient ways to transform your game.

7 Key Considerations for At-Home Putting Mats

Although they may look simple, putting mats have a surprising number of design features to consider. There are many factors to keep in mind when choosing a putting mat , especially if you want one that will last for years or even decades. Here are the most important criteria to consider when deciding which putting mat is best for you.

One of the most important considerations is knowing how much space you have. The bigger the mat, the wider variety of putts you can practice. But the bottom line is that the best putting mat is one that will fit comfortably in your home or office.

The roll on a good putting mat will feel as close to an actual green as possible. You might find that some putting mats are too slow, which will worsen your game, and some are so fast that they just don’t feel real. Choose a mat with a green speed that’s similar to your favorite golf course.

The quality of a putting mat is a combination of durability, good roll, thickness, and build. You want a putting mat made of high-end materials and built to last.

4. Portability

Unless you have an unusually large space, you’re probably not going to leave your putting mat out all the time. Having a mat that’s easy to move will encourage you to get it out more often. On the other hand, you don’t want something so light and thin that its quality and durability suffer.

5. Durability

A putting mat should last you a long time. However, poorly-made mats can wear down when you walk on them or stop performing like natural greens after a couple of months. We haven’t included any products like that on this list, but it’s something to consider and be wary of if you end up going with a different brand.

6. Features

When it comes to additional features, the best putting mats offer variety to meet different needs. Depending on your price range and preferred brand, you might purchase a mat with multiple holes, a specialized backstop, an incline, visual aids, automatic ball return, or even a smartphone app for stats, practice drills, and feedback.

As with most golf gear, putting mats can get pretty expensive. However, several products offer excellent value for money, especially when it comes to high-quality materials and design.

Final Thoughts

When choosing a putting mat for practicing at home, you want something high quality, durable, and easy to use without going beyond your budget. Although each of the mats reviewed here has plenty to offer, the best all-around option has to be the PrimePutt Putting Mat .

Not only is it the most aesthetically pleasing putting mat on this list, but it’s also the one with turf that mimics the feel and roll of a real putting surface. And with its excellent portability, cleverly designed backstop and holes, and impressive ability to lay flat, it’s the obvious choice for practicing your putts at home or at the office.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing the right product is essential for getting the most out of your at-home putting mat. It’s only natural to have questions about how to make your choice. Check out our answers to these common questions about indoor putting mats.

Are putting mats worth it?

If you’re interested in improving your game, getting a putting mat is definitely worth it, regardless of your current level. Your putting ability is an essential component of your overall golf game, and improving it can be transformative for your enjoyment of being out on the course, not to mention your typical score.

Which putting mat is best for home?

For both casual and more serious golfers, the best indoor putting mat is the PrimePutt mat. It’s a durable, high-quality product that works well and packs up nicely without being overly expensive.

Why are some putting mats uphill?

Some putting mats have an uphill slope to help you practice on different kinds of greens. The uphill gradient also trains you to hit harder and build muscle memory for longer putts. However, although you may notice a slight improvement in your putts with this technique, it pales in comparison to investing in an indoor putting mat that will allow you to hone your strokes on a realistic green.

Can I practice putting at the office?

If you have the space, setting up an indoor putting mat at the office is a great choice. Typically, an office putting set includes a small putting green and a putter, allowing you to practice your putting skills any time you stand up from your desk. Just be sure to check with your employer and co-workers to ensure it’s okay.

The best at-home putting mats serve as an invaluable tool for golfers looking to elevate their game from the comfort of their own space. It's no secret that putting is arguably the most important part of the game and the area where you can save the most amount of shots. How many times have you hit two great shots to find the putting surface, only to three-putt and walk away with an undeserved bogey, when a possible birdie was on the cards.

Obviously, when it comes to putting, there are plenty of ways to improve, such as purchasing one of the best putting aids . Another way, though, is to think about an indoor putting green, which can not only save you shots, but also make use of your time as it can be used in your home set up.

Perfect Practice Perfect Putting Mat

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

First things first, the Perfect Practice Perfect Putting Mat features in various lengths which means there should be a size for everybody. Out of the box though, the putting mat essentially comes in three main parts which we found very easy to construct.

In our testing, we used it on two different surfaces - tiled floor (kitchen) and a carpeted floor and, rather handily, it performed very well on both, but it's worth noting that you must take care when unrolling it to ensure a smooth roll.

Aesthetically though, there are an array of different lines to help with both the path of your stroke and the start line of your putts. These visual lines are also backed up by two different size holes to aim for at the far end, with both on a raised platform to help with confidence of stroke.

Big Moss Commander Patio Series Putting Green

Big Moss Commander Patio Series Putting Green

There's a lot to like about the Big Moss Commander Patio Series Putting Green, with the main standout being the fact you can use it for not only putting, but also chipping, with the Commander featuring a 2' x 3' extension that lengthens the putting green further, allowing you to chip.

This means you can really hone in your short game, with the overall design being built with input from The PGA’s top teaching professionals and Tour players. Because of this, Big Moss have been able to create a realistic home practice experience, with the pace of the green running at 11, a speed which you will see in professional tournaments.

We see further signs of quality in the Commander, as the putting green has been designed with a 5 mm high-density closed cell foam for durability, with Big Moss claiming it'll "easily last longer than 10 years and hold up to abuse better than any surface on the market."

Zen Swing Stage Review

Zen Green Stage

Such is the quality of the Zen Green Stage you will see it in the Sky Sports studio whenever they are broadcasting the golf. Length-wise, it is a 6ft by 8ft mat that runs on hydraulics which are controlled by a simple touch screen panel paired via Bluetooth.

However, it's not the long game qualities we are interested in here, with the Zen Green Stage also used to create various breaking putts to closely simulate putts you would face on the course. In the set up, there is a single cup at the end of the mat, with the set-up tilting to produce the various amounts of break.

In testing, we loved the Green Stage, with it being a truly unique bit of kit that will improve performance out on the golf course. However, with all of this tech comes a slightly hefty price tag of over £14,000. If you can afford it though, there's truly nothing like it on the market.

Exputt RG Putting Simulator

Exputt RG Putting Simulator

In testing, we thought that the Exputt RG putting simulator was an excellent performer, with the ease of use and set-up process extremely simple. To begin with, everything is packaged and labelled perfectly and the user manual is excellent. Next steps were to roll out the mat, attach to the HDMI post, and then position the camera in the right place to ensure synchronization.

Crucially, once we had created an account, there were an array of options to choose from. For example in Classic or Practice categories, we were are able to hit putts from any distance, with uphill or sidehill breaks, and at whatever speed we wanted. So, if your local course offers greens that Stimp at 11, then you can replicate that.

The only slight downside is the price tag, but we thought you do get an awful lot for your money. The graphics are clear and, given how much data and functionality is available, we found significant improvements within our game. Certainly, if you want to take a deeper dive into your putting, then this is a brilliant way to get some hard facts together.

PrimePutt Tour-Quality Indoor Putting Mat

PrimePutt Tour-Quality Indoor Putting Mat

The first thing to note about the PrimePutt Tour-Quality Indoor Putting Mat is that it comes in various sizes and lengths, so there should be something for everyone. What's more, there is quality littered throughout, with the putting mat actually used by various PGA Tour winners.

Constructed of top-quality artificial turf, it works superbly on all manner of surfaces, with the PrimePutt laying flat every single time. Other details include three cups, which have been designed to behave like an actual golf hole, whilst the 1/2" nylon turf is very durable.

Although it is on the pricier side, the build-quality shines through and, because it has been constructed with high-quality materials, it is built to last the test of time.

Me And My Golf Breaking Ball Putting Mat

Breaking Ball Putting Mat

Piers Ward and Andy Proudman, from Me and My Golf, are very well known PGA professionals famous for their online coaching and tips to help you play better. Here they have teamed up to create a cool mat with three breaking balls to help your putting.

We begin with the golf balls, which have differently weighted breaks. In testing, it was quite clear that the green ball has a slight break, the red ball has a medium break and the blue ball has a heavy break. The amount of break is influenced by a screw inside of the ball but this does not mean these golf balls feel awful to putt with. No they didn't feel at all clicky or any different to other  golf balls  that you might use on the course which is a huge bonus for a training aid of this type.

Coupled with these balls is the mat, available in three different sizes - 7.5ft (2.3m), 11ft (3.4m) and 14ft (4.3m), which allows for plenty of options. The pattern on the mat has been created to help with green reading, start line and pace control too.

Our  testing methodology  for all golf equipment revolves around just that, testing. That means we use golf products to refute or back up manufacturers claims whilst also trying to see if the product is any good.

This will take the form of using the product over a period of time, on and off the golf course where applicable. For example, with indoor putting greens, we used them off the course to gauge, amongst other things, what they are actually like to use, how much space is needed, the quality, and how well they store away.

We believe that it is by using the equipment in the real world that shows just how good a product is. We should also note that no manufacturer can buy a good review because our testing team tells it how it is.

How to choose an indoor putting green

Here are some factors you need to consider when looking at purchasing an indoor putting green. (Also if you want a new flatstick as well, check out our guide on the  best putters  too)

As you have seen, the best indoor putting greens come in a variety of sizes. If you want a long or short models, manufacturers have got you covered. The thing to be aware of on your end is how much space do you have, because this will then dictate which model to go for. Also, we recommend thinking about what kind of floor you will put the green on because some types of flooring, like wooden floors, perform better than others.

Convenience

Linking with the above point, how convenient do you want the indoor green to be, primarily in terms of how easy is it to store and fold away. Some of the models above are convenient and easily in a bag, whilst others have the hole attachment which takes up a bit more room.

What do you want to practice

If you’re looking to focus on a specific part of your putting, there will be a green for that. A long putting green will obviously help you with pace and distance control whilst models with holes on will help you gain more confidence just by seeing the ball go in the hole more often. Alternatively, if you just want to use the green for fun, rather than intense practice, then go for a model with holes and fun little accessories too.

The good thing about indoor putting greens is that they should last a long time because all you are doing on them is putting. That being said there are still models out there which wear down too quickly which is why we have collated the models above because none of them should do that. Just be aware of cheap materials used on putting greens because they won't perform well in the long term.

No buying guide would be complete without at least mentioning the price factor. Some of the larger models can be quite expensive, but there is good value for money to be had here as they last a long time.

What makes a good indoor putting green?

First things first, it must be durable. You don't want to keep rolling and unrolling the putting green to find out that it's starting to tear or change the way the ball rolls on the surface. It's also imperative that the ball stays level as it rolls, otherwise you won't be getting the full experience when it comes to putting.

How do you keep an indoor putting green clean?

Keeping your indoor green clean is just one of the ways to extend its shelf life. Usually, you will be able to use a brush or vacuum on the greens, but it's worth reading the manual before you do so.

Are indoor putting greens worth it?

Yes, definitely! Putting is arguably the most important part of the game and the easiest ways to save shots. If you are unable to get up to the putting green to practice, an indoor putting green is a great solution, especially as it's convenient and right on your door step.

10 Best Putting Mats to Putt like a Pro

If you ask the average golfer—amateur or pro—they'll likely tell you that putting is one of the most intricate parts of golf. Posture, swing control, the ability to read a green, and countless other skills all come together for a challenging, often frustrating, experience. And, even though not everyone can do it well, nor does every golfer enjoy putting, putting skills are nonetheless essential for lowering your score.

Even the most experienced professional golfers must devote significant time to putting practice, dedicating about 40% of total practice time to the short game. As amateurs, however, it can be much more challenging to find the time necessary to practice on a real green like pros do. That's why having an indoor putting mat is an excellent way to hone your putting ability, even if you only have a few spare minutes here and there.

Whether you're looking to take your short game to the next level or are brand-new to the sport, getting a high-quality putting set that's enjoyable to use is essential for gaining confidence in your putts. To help you spend your time and effort wisely, we've narrowed down the available options to the 10 best putting mats. And though you’ll see PrimePutt is our top pick, you can use our research to help make an informed choice for your needs and start practicing putts as soon as possible.

A Quick Look

  • Best Overall: PrimePutt
  • Runner-Up: Perfect Practice
  • Third Place: PuttOut Pro

Top 10 Indoor Putting Mats

You'll find dozens of options when searching for an indoor putting mat. However, there are vast differences in quality, features, and price among putting sets, so it's important to research and choose carefully. After all, a high-quality product will likely last you for many years and produce noticeable results in your golf game, so it's worth taking the time to select the best putting mat for your individual needs and goals. Now let’s dive into our review of the top 10 products below:

1. PrimePutt Putting Mat

details

  • Realistic design closely resembles a real putting green
  • Easy to unroll and lays flat
  • Excellent cup and backstop design makes putting practice more efficient
  • Ball rolls true on high-quality turf
  • Used by PGA professionals
  • Somewhat heavy
  • No automatic ball return

Unquestionably, the best indoor putting mat we've found—and the one that we recommend to all golf enthusiasts—is the PrimePutt Putting Mat . Thousands of golfers, including professionals like PGA Tour player Sean O'Hair , use this putting mat to perfect their putting skills. And in our experience, any product good enough for pros of that level is typically one you should consider.

Professional endorsements aside, there are several reasons why the PrimePutt has become such a hit among expert golfers and amateurs hoping to improve their short game significantly. Specifically, the PrimePutt has one of the most realistic putting surfaces of all the indoor putting greens we encountered during our research. While some of this realistic experience comes from the mat’s design, it’s largely due to the exceptional quality of the synthetic turf, which comes as close to the real thing as possible without hitting the links.

This premium quality is incredibly important. Practicing on a mat that feels very similar to a real putting green will make your practice sessions more useful and efficient and help them translate better (and get you a better score) when you actually head to the golf course.

Nonetheless, the indoor putting mat industry has a fair number of high-quality products and heavy-hitting brands, so having the most realistic turf wasn’t enough to get PrimePutt the number-one spot on its own. Luckily, PrimePutt's other standout features include their innovative cup design, the no-slip backing, and the elegantly designed backstop. The cups are particularly satisfying to use, as they are designed to move each ball to the back of the cup, so you don't need to remove the balls before each consecutive putt for up to four putts in a row.

Additionally, the PrimePutt mat has a durable yet flexible backing that prevents the mat from sliding around as you practice. This was one of the most common customer gripes for indoor mats we saw, so it’s a must-have for even the most basic products. We also love the backstop that prevents missed putts from rolling off the mat or bouncing back and blocking your next putt. This excellent feature lets you stay focused on your game without constantly chasing the ball or moving missed putts out of the way.

Another reason to love the PrimePutt is that it rolls true every time, with a stimp speed of around 10-12. You can choose between several different models, with the three-hole versions measuring 3 ft. wide and ranging in length from 9’ to 15’. If you have limited space, there's a compact one-hole version measuring 1.5’ x 9’.

The PrimePutt mat's clever design allows it to lay flat without much effort, so you won't have to deal with wrinkles on the putting surface. Although it's on the heavier side, it rolls up easily, making it convenient to transport, though it's such an attractive mat that you may decide to leave it permanently set up in your home or office. Because it lays flat like a real putting green, this mat doesn't have an automatic ball return like some of its competitors, but with each cup holding up to four balls, that's not really an inconvenience.

As if all of this isn’t enough, our experience with PrimePutt’s customer service was nothing short of stellar. Plus, customers can get a 100% money-back guarantee if they’re unhappy with the product.

Bottom Line: If you can't get to the golf course, the PrimePutt Putting Mat is the next best thing. This top-of-the-line putting mat uses innovative cups and an excellent backstop design to provide an incredibly realistic experience with a roll as close to the real thing as possible. The mat lays flat soon after unrolling, so you can start practicing immediately.

And if our experience isn’t enough, PrimePutt also came out on top as the superior putting mat according to professional golfer Zac Radford's side-by-side product testing. Grab your exclusive 10% discount on PrimePutt. Apply promo code PUTTMORE at checkout.

2. Perfect Practice Putting Mat

details

  • Features two holes (regulation and reduced sizes)
  • Convenient automatic ball return for continuous putting practice
  • Clear markings for setting up putts
  • Easy to roll up and transport
  • Available in three different lengths
  • Can't adjust the ramp, so all putts have to be made uphill
  • Can take some time to get the mat to lay flat

The Perfect Practice Putting Mat is another excellent choice for amateurs and professionals alike. A sturdy product that can withstand frequent use, the Perfect Practice mat features two holes (one regulation size and one reduced size for extra difficulty), allowing you to improve your accuracy and precision with each putting stroke.

The surface of this putting mat is crystal velvet which, while not the most realistic-looking option, offers a smooth material that allows your ball to roll easily to the hole, just like it would on the natural greens of a real golf course.

Another feature that will keep you practicing is the automatic ball return, which means you won't have to fetch your balls after every putt or even after several putts. Because the holes are located at the top of a small incline, the automatic return system uses gravity to roll your balls back to you, helping you practice more efficiently and continuously. This feature is definitely convenient, though some people may not enjoy having to sink all their putts uphill—after all, putting during an actual game will inevitably involve uphill, downhill, and flat putts.

The Perfect Practice mat is available in several variations. The Standard version is 9’ 6” long, so it's likely to fit in your home, office, garage, or wherever you want to practice. If you'd prefer a longer or shorter mat, you can choose the Compact version (one hole, 8' long) or the XL version (two holes, 15'6" long). There are also Acrylic and Barstool versions available at the 9'6" length.

From what we can tell, the Perfect Practice mat was designed to look more like a distinct practice tool rather than a scaled-down putting green. Although this may be less than ideal for those who prefer a more attractive, natural-looking mat, the Perfect Practice mat has useful distance markings and clear lines for setting up putts, suitable for both right-handed and left-handed golfers. An alignment mirror is also available to purchase if you specifically want to perfect your positioning.

One small complaint we had while researching was that this mat takes a little longer to lay flat than some of its competitors. Once it's flattened out, your ball will roll true, but the first few sessions may suffer a bit from residual curve.

Even so, the Perfect Practice mat can be rolled up and isn't particularly heavy, so you can move it around, though you're likely to have some temporary bumps and wrinkles after unrolling. Using an iron on a low setting or vacuuming the mat can eliminate these. Finally, there's a skid-free backing to keep the mat in place, and this backing is durable enough that you can even use it outside.

Bottom Line: Once you get this mat to lay flat, your ball will roll true, and you can practice continuously (putting uphill) thanks to the automatic ball return. With its regulation and reduced size holes, this product is a good option to help hone your aim.

3. PuttOut Pro Golf Putting Mat

details

  • Rolls up into a compact carrying case
  • Alignment aids and pace targets help with practice drills
  • Available in five color options
  • Two-year manufacturer's warranty
  • Quite short at less than 8 feet long
  • Putting cup sold separately
  • Advertised stimp speed of 10 may be exaggerated

For those looking for a basic yet high-quality putting mat, the PuttOut Pro Golf Putting Mat is a great option to consider. Whether you're brand-new to golfing, enjoy a casual round on the weekends, or play competitively, everyone can benefit from this indoor putting mat.

Easy to transport and weighing around five pounds, the PuttOut is one of the most portable mats we have come across. It's quite short and narrow, measuring just under eight feet long and less than two feet wide, and has a durable rubber backing to keep it in place during practice. The heavy rubber is ideal for most surfaces, and the mat will lay flat after you unroll it from the carrying case.

The nylon turf material could be more realistic, but you'll still be able to hone your skills. The surface is designed to approximate a medium-fast green with a stimp rating of 10, although this speed seems slightly exaggerated. The mat will roll more slowly if you place it on carpet, and even on hardwood, it's arguably more like a 9, though that's probably fine for most players.

As you practice your putts, you'll utilize clear alignment lines, target points, and distance markings. This makes it easy to get started with practice drills, though you'll need to purchase a putting cup separately.

Though the PuttOut mat is only available in one size, you have an array of color options to choose from: yellow/green, green, gray, and blue-black. The green and yellow/green versions are the most traditional, but it's nice to have options if you're trying to complement the decor of a specific room. And if you experience any issues with this product, you're entitled to a two-year manufacturer's warranty.

Bottom Line: The PuttOut putting mat is a good option for golfers looking for a basic yet functional design. It's compact enough to roll up and travel with ease, and the alignment guides and other markings provide a useful framework for practice drills.

4. WellPutt Golf High Speed Training Mat

details

  • Lots of visual aids for alignment and building muscle memory
  • Two speeds in one mat, good for accuracy and distance control
  • Available in three different lengths (10', 13', 26')
  • Portable and UV-resistant so that it can be used outside (in good weather)
  • Some golfers may prefer a more realistic putting green
  • Somewhat difficult to get the mat to lay perfectly flat
  • Novice golfers may be confused by the markings

The WellPutt Golf High-Speed Training Mat is another top choice indoor putting practice. Notably, this mat has been endorsed by Cameron McCormick , a well-known coach who has worked with PGA and LPGA stars like Jordan Spieth and So Yeon Ryu.

If you're into visual aids and guidelines, the WellPutt mat has got you covered; it has more markings than most of the indoor putting mats we encountered. These visual aids allow you to try different angles and work on your body and putter alignment while also getting used to stroke amplitude and building muscle memory.

On the other hand, you'll never see these markings on a real putting green, so some golfers may prefer a marking-free indoor mat for more realistic practice sessions. Likewise, novice players may be overwhelmed by the array of markings, so this may not be the best choice for beginners who are new to the game and want to master the basics.

The WellPutt has several notable features that may make it particularly appealing to certain golfers. Depending on which direction you putt, you can practice on two different green speeds on the same mat (10 and 11.5), allowing you to work on both accuracy and distance control.

The WellPutt smartphone app, which is available for both iOS and Android, is a useful tool if you enjoy using technology to level up your golf game. A practice book is included, too. Together with the visual aids, these extras help keep things interesting and give you plenty of training options, so you won't find yourself getting bored of putting practice.

The WellPutt mat is available in three different lengths (10’, 13’, and a whopping 26’), so most people will be able to find the space to accommodate one of the sizes. While it's best to practice indoors, this mat is UV-resistant if you want to bring it outside once in a while – just don't get it wet! It's easy to transport and store when you're not using it, though once you've gone to the trouble of making sure it lays flat (heavy objects are sometimes required), you may want to set it up permanently!

Bottom Line: If you want to get serious about your training regimen while avoiding repetitive practice sessions, the WellPutt can help with extensive visual aids and a smartphone app with over 50 exercises.

5. GoSports Pure Putt Golf Ramp

details

  • Well-crafted appearance with dark wood and deep green turf
  • Comes with four golf balls
  • Automatic ball return generally works well
  • Useful visual aids for putting drills
  • A bit bulky to transport due to the ball return system
  • Quite a steep ramp for putting practice

If you like the design of the Perfect Practice mat but want a slightly less pricey option, the GoSports Pure Putt Golf Ramp could be the ideal fit.

At nine feet long, the GoSports mat provides a decent amount of practice space, though it's certainly not one of the biggest (and is slightly shorter than the Perfect Practice mat). You'll want to look elsewhere if you want to practice longer putts. It's solid, well-made, and has a very attractive appearance, with a dark wood-stained base and deep green turf.

Just like the Perfect Practice mat, the GoSports Pure Putt features two cups (one 2.75" and one 3.5" diameter), allowing you to hone your skills beyond what you could achieve with just one regulation-sized hole. While you can obviously use your favorite golf balls, GoSports conveniently provides four balls that slot neatly into the wooden base right behind the backstop.

The automatic ball return is designed to return putts whether you make them or not, ideally eliminating the need to walk back and forth retrieving balls. This feature generally works well, though some putts with less power may only return halfway. The ramp at the end of the mat is quite steep and can't be lowered, creating a somewhat artificial putting scenario. It's great for practicing uphill putts, though, and most golfers will soon get the hang of the incline.

For a training aid, the GoSports mat has minimal markings and lines—just enough to help you set up your putts and practice putting drills from various distances, thus building muscle memory and determining how much power should go into your stroke. The "less is more" approach to markings is a plus in terms of appearance, though some players may prefer a mat that provides more visual feedback or allows for more variation.

It's easy to assemble and take apart, though a bit bulky to transport due to the heavy wood-paneled ball return. If you want a very portable mat, choose one without this feature.

Bottom Line: Though a bit bulky to transport, the GoSports putting mat is surprisingly well-made, with an attractive appearance and a functional automatic ball return. The two holes and alignment guides provide just enough challenge for daily putting practice.

6. SKLZ Accelerator Pro

details

  • Good green quality considering the affordable price
  • Simple, user-friendly design with alignment markings at 3', 5', and 7'
  • Can purchase it in a bundle with a chipping net
  • Hole is slightly larger than regulation size, which won't help with accuracy training
  • Only helpful for practicing short putts
  • Ball return system is plastic, not wood

If you're looking for a relatively compact training aid with a simple design, the SKLZ Accelerator Pro is an indoor putting mat that you can set up pretty much anywhere. This mat measures 9 ft. long and just 16.25 in. wide, which means it works well if you want to practice putting in a relatively small space at home or at the office.

Unlike putting mats with more complex designs, the SKLZ Accelerator Pro is refreshingly basic. The mat has an upslope to the cup, leading to a plastic automatic ball return system. You won't be able to work on precision or accuracy drills requiring a reduced-size cup, as this model only has one hole. In fact, this product's biggest drawback is that the hole seems just slightly bigger than a regulation cup, making it almost too easy to sink putts. Still, if what you want is to be able to putt continuously and have your ball returned to you, the SKLZ Accelerator Pro can do that.

Due to its simplistic design and lack of extra features, this is quite an affordable indoor putting mat. Considering its price, the green quality is decent, with a thin but true-rolling surface. As with other mats of this design, all of your putts will need to be made uphill, and you have limited options for adding variation to your practice sessions.

The SKLZ Accelerator Pro is a particularly good mat if you want to get into a nice putting rhythm and keep things simple. You can easily practice short putts of varying lengths thanks to the alignment markings at 3’, 5’, and 7’. At each distance, markings on the mat help you square your putter face to develop a consistent putting motion.

For an added challenge, you can purchase a bundle that includes both the SKLZ Accelerator Pro and a three-target chipping net, ideal for working on chips, lobs, and pitches with either real golf balls or foam training balls.

Bottom Line: The SKLZ Accelerator Pro is a compact, reasonably-priced putting mat with a simple design. It's good for practicing short putts and working on your alignment and putting motion.

7. BOBURN Golf Putting Green

details

  • Large putting mat with multiple holes (three or six)
  • Unlimited putting angles to choose from
  • High-quality nylon turf is great to putt on
  • Good for practicing putts on a flat, true-rolling green
  • No visual aids or alignment guides
  • Large size makes it somewhat challenging to transport
  • More expensive than many other mats

The BOBURN Golf Putting Green is likely to appeal to serious golfers who have a lot of space at their disposal and are ready to upgrade their putting practice. This is one of the more expensive mats, though not unreasonably so, considering its large size and high-quality construction.

There are three models to choose from: 4’ x 10’ (three holes), 5’ x 10’ (three holes), and 5’ x 10’ (six holes). Whichever you select, you're going to be getting a hefty mat. BOBURN features a 10mm rubber base that keeps the mat securely in place on pretty much any surface. It's durable enough to use outside on a patio or even in the backyard, as long as you protect it from the elements.

Of course, if you have a large office or lots of unused space in your living room, you can set it up inside, where you're likely to get a somewhat faster, smoother, and more accurate roll. Because it's so big and thick, transporting it is not the easiest, and it may take some time to lay flat after being rolled up. If possible, it's best to leave this mat set up in place (though not outside, of course).

As you would expect for the price, the BOBURN's nylon turf is a great material to putt on. Another pleasing feature is the thick artificial grass around the edges of the mat, which serves as a "natural" backstop to prevent putts from rolling away. This mat doesn't have any slopes, so you'll get plenty of practice with flat putts.

However, you'll want to look elsewhere if you prefer to practice with gradients or have a built-in ball return. Likewise, this mat doesn't have any alignment guides or visual aids, nor does it have accessories like a smartphone app or a training book. With three or six holes spread out around the mat, though, you can keep busy by practicing putts of varying lengths from pretty much any angle.

Bottom Line: If you're prepared to pay more for a large, durable, high-quality mat with multiple holes and a grass backstop, the BOBURN putting green will help you improve your short game from a wide range of angles and distances.

8. Putt-A-Bout Par Three Golf Putting Green

details

  • Gentle incline up to the holes provides a realistic experience
  • Three holes and two sandtrap cutouts for varied practice
  • Lightweight and easy to roll up and transport
  • No backstop and no automatic ball return
  • Some golfers may prefer a mat with visual aids
  • Can get creases if rolled up too tightly

The Putt-A-Bout Par Three Golf Putting Green has an eye-catching design that sets it apart from most other putting mats. The mat is kidney-shaped rather than long and narrow, allowing you to practice putting from a variety of angles, including off-center putts. Like the PrimePutt, it is free from visual aids and any other markings, which many golfers prefer as those are the conditions they'll encounter on a real green. On the other hand, golfers looking to work on their positioning, putter face alignment, and pacing may want to choose a product with more visual feedback and training tools.

There are three holes in the Putt-A-Bout, built into the green as cutouts. The part of the mat containing these cutouts is slightly raised but with a much more gentle gradient than putting mats with ball return systems. The Putt-A-Bout's incline is just enough to create depth for the holes, encouraging you to practice with enough power but not so much that you get used to overpowered putts.

In addition to the three holes, there are two sandtrap cutouts for catching wayward putts. However, since this mat doesn't have an automatic ball return or a backstop, you're likely to spend some time retrieving balls that fall off the edge of the mat.

Due to its simplicity, the Putt-A-Bout is easy to move from one place to another. You don't have to worry about setting anything else up before you can start practicing. Measuring 9’ x 3’ and weighing just 3.5 pounds, it rolls up and unrolls easily. The green tends to lay flat, though you may notice some wrinkles or creases if it was rolled up too tightly while being stored.

Bottom Line: Balls roll very nicely on this reasonably-priced mat made from recycled PET resin. It's easy to set up and transport, providing a varied putting experience thanks to the hole cutouts and sandtraps.

9. HELIXUS Golf Putting Green Set

details

  • Movable silicone cup lets you practice putts from all angles
  • Numerous visual aids and alignment markings
  • Mat has true-rolling nylon turf and a no-slip rubber backing
  • Drawstring bag for easy carrying
  • No built-in cups
  • Not as visually pleasing as a solid green turf
  • Players will have to walk back and forth to retrieve balls

The HELIXUS Golf Putting Green Set gives you everything you need to practice putting in one handy drawstring carrying case (well, except your putter, of course). Easy to unroll, with a fairly thick nylon turf surface and a no-slip rubber backing, you can set up the HELIXUS mat anywhere in your home or office or even on the patio.

Although it lacks the aesthetic appeal of putting mats designed to look like real golf greens, the HELIXUS mat is incredibly useful as a training aid for putting on a flat surface. Measuring 20 in. wide by 10 ft. long, you'll have plenty of surface area on which to practice putting. The mat features a variety of alignment guides for squaring your putter face and setting up your putt, so you can develop the muscle memory needed to start more of your putts online. There are distance markings every 12 inches, so you'll get immediate feedback on the speed and direction of your putts.

The set comes with a silicone cup with a tiny flag. The cup can hold up to three golf balls, which are helpfully provided. Although this isn't quite as satisfying to putt into as a built-in cup, the silicone cup has been thoughtfully designed to mimic a real golf hole, making the ball stay in while misses bounce out.

It's regulation size and can be placed anywhere on the mat without slipping, so you can practice from all sorts of angles. The HELIXUS set also includes an attachable backstop for keeping your putts on the mat, though with only one cup and no automatic ball return, you'll have to retrieve the balls fairly frequently.

Bottom Line: The HELIXUS putting set provides all the essential components for basic putting practice: a putting mat with visual aids, three balls, movable silicone putting cup, and a backstop, all in a convenient carrying bag.

10. PutterBall Golf Pong Game

details

  • Very fun putting game for players of all ages and abilities
  • Made of thick, durable foam
  • Easy to set up, pack away, and transport
  • Can be set up on any flat surface (indoors or outdoors)
  • Carrying case sold separately
  • Pricey for a putting game
  • Mat has permanent creases from being folded

Even the pros need to blow off steam and enjoy themselves every so often. While putting practice can be satisfying, it can also be somewhat repetitive and solitary. Although it's a little pricey, PutterBall gives golf enthusiasts the opportunity to get some putting practice in while also enjoying a fun and highly social game with friends, colleagues, or family members.

PutterBall is designed to resemble a beer pong game, though no drinking is required to enjoy this activity. It's essentially a foam mat with six holes located at each end in a pyramid shape, just like in other pong variations. Players are divided into two teams of two, and when one team sinks a putt, that particular hole is covered over with one of the 12 included hole covers. The first team to cover all six of their target holes is the winner.

This game is intended to be exceptionally portable so that you can fold up the mat in a matter of seconds. Just unfold it wherever you want to play, indoors or outdoors, including on grass or even on sand at the beach. Two mini golf putters and two golf balls are provided, though you'll need to purchase the carrying case separately.

On the plus side, PutterBall is made of thick, durable foam with a decent rubber backing. Just don't expect the turf surface to be particularly smooth or get too caught up in determining the speed of the mat. This is a fun novelty game, after all, and isn't likely to replace the indoor putting mat you use for honing your putts. Because it's foldable, you're likely to encounter creases in the mat, though this shouldn't detract from your enjoyment of the game.

Bottom Line: As long as you keep in mind that this is a leisure activity and not serious putting practice, you will have a blast with PutterBall . It's a great way to get your friends and family interested in golf, and it's incredibly easy to set up and transport.

Why You Should Use a Putting Mat

There are several important reasons why golfers of all levels can benefit from setting up a putting mat in their home or office. The main reason is that your putter is the most used golf club in your bag, so knowing how to use it well will significantly improve your overall game and make you feel more confident on the course.

Another reason to invest in a putting mat is that it's an easy way to improve your game without taking up much space. And once you've set up your mat, you won't have to pay anything more to practice as frequently as you'd like. A putting mat is a great way to get your family and friends interested in golf as well, and an office putting set can be a fun activity when you have free time at work.

Key Considerations for Putting Mats

There's a lot more to a top-of-the-line putting mat than meets the eye. Although many putting mats look similar, there are huge variations in size, durability, roll, green speed, and numerous other factors. Here are several key features you'll want to consider before purchasing an indoor putting green.

Standard putting mats are typically nine or ten feet long, though many models are significantly longer, and some are just eight feet long. Some mats are long and narrow, while others offer more width so you can practice putts from additional angles (especially if there are multiple cups). You can achieve great results on a mat of any size, so consider your personal preferences and available space when making your decision.

Golf course greens are smooth, so you'll want a putting mat with a true-rolling surface to optimize your putting practice. The best way to assess the smoothness is to take note of how well the ball rolls as you putt it. This is a crucial factor for transferring your skills from the putting mat to the green. You should also consider the speed of the mat and how it stacks up against the speed of your favorite golf course.

If you want to improve your short game, you'll need a high-quality putting mat. There's little point in buying an inexpensive mat with a thin, uneven surface if you actually want to use your putting mat as a practice aid. Likewise, if you are hoping to get years of use out of your putting mat, you'll want to invest in a well-reviewed product with premium materials that can withstand wear and tear.

Portability

If you're planning to set up your putting mat and leave it permanently in place, you don't need to worry about portability. However, if you plan to travel with your mat or would like the flexibility to set it up whenever and wherever you have some free time, this is a key factor.

Consider how heavy the mat is and how well it withstands being stored and unrolled. Being lightweight and easy to pack makes for great portability, as long as the mat doesn't end up with wrinkles every time you move it.

Durability typically goes hand in hand with quality. A durable putting mat will last you a long time, regardless of how often you practice your putt. Some models will wear down more quickly than others, so you'll want to look at options that will hold up for a long time. A more durable mat is undoubtedly a better investment.

While putting mats all have one basic job—to teach you to putt better—they have a surprisingly wide variety of different features. Some have ramps that allow for automatic ball return, some have multiple cups of different sizes, some have visual aids and training tools, and some have multiple green speeds. When looking at a putting mat, think about whether it has the features you want and how they will benefit your game.

In most cases, the quality and durability of a putting mat correlate to a higher price point. This makes sense, considering that a putting mat is an investment in improving your game, which is hard to put a price tag on.

Still, you may be surprised to discover that you can get a decent putting mat for a reasonable price, though it may not have all the features or quite the same quality as a more expensive model. Price doesn't always equate to quality, though, so make sure to read plenty of reviews before making your purchase.

The Last Word on Putting Mats

Golf is a beautiful, challenging, demanding, and frustrating sport, and if you’ve played it for any time at all, you’re probably hooked on the idea of improving your game. Ideally, this would mean more hours on the green or the driving range, hopefully in perfect weather with a good group of friends. When you can’t make that a reality, however, finding ways to conveniently practice your skills at home can make a huge difference in how you perform on the course.

To that end, few tools match the practice and entertainment value of a truly good indoor putting mat. Durable, realistic, and easily laid out or stored, these mats are the easiest way to practice one of the most important parts of your game.

And while we know that every golfer has their preferences about everything from clubs to gloves and tees, we can confidently say that PrimePutt’s indoor putting mat is simply one of the best indoor putting mats currently on the market. Regardless of what you prioritize in your putting practice, this product stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of build quality, materials, and experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

As we've mentioned, buying a putting mat can be a significant investment. Furthermore, your choice of putting mat is likely to have a major impact on your golf game, so it's only natural to have some questions. Check out these frequently asked questions and their answers to clear up any remaining confusion.

Are putting mats worth it?

Absolutely. Most people who golf strongly feel that putting mats are worth it, both as training tools and as confidence builders. Putting mats help you improve your putting skills, and they're fun to use, especially at the office!

How long should a putting mat be?

The ideal length of a putting mat depends on your preference as a golfer, though most putting mats are at least eight feet long, allowing you to practice significant putts. Some manufacturers offer putting mats in a variety of sizes, though around 10 feet is standard.

Why are putting mats raised?

Some putting mats have a raised slope or ramp at the far end, containing the hole (or multiple holes). The main reason for this design is to facilitate the use of an automatic ball return system, which relies on gravity to roll the ball back to you after each putt.

Which putting mat is best?

The putting mat that's best for you is likely to depend on several factors, including your current skill level, practice objectives, available space, and design preferences – not to mention your budget! We are confident in all of the putting greens on this list, though PrimePutt is our overall favorite.

Putting mats are essential for improving golf skills indoors, catering to different tastes and financial plans. They come in various designs, some with realistic textures and others with helpful alignment features, to offer a true-to-course putting experience. A high-quality putting mat can lead to better precision and confidence in one's putting game, bridging the gap between practice and actual play.
