The Best Places to Take a Boat Tour in Miami

Key biscayne.

Key Biscayne houses the famous Crandon Park and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. This key is a great place to take a boat because it has wildlife, gorgeous luxury residential properties to admire, stunning beaches, clear-blue waters, several good restaurants, and a fantastic view of Miami on the west side, and the Atlantic Ocean (plus unforgettable sunrises) on the east side. 

Adjacent to Key Biscayne is the Nixon Sandbar , a popular hangout spot for boaters and partiers alike. 

Stiltsville

Stiltsville is south of Key Biscayne’s Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. It is what remains of a historic community built out at sea but later destroyed by a torrid storm. Only six of these wooden stilt houses still remain. Just last year, in 2021, another one of the stilt houses collapsed and slipped below the sea’s surface. It is a landmark that will not last forever and should be seen while still possible. 

One of Many Miami Sandbars

Miami has several sandbars because it combines soft sand and shallow water. Some sandbars have been around for decades, while others come and go randomly, only to be appreciated and used for brief periods. These popular sandbars will bring in families, party-goers, snorkelers, scuba divers, swimmers, and more.

Most are occupied by at least one floating food boat too. Think of a food truck, but on water; it’s pretty fantastic! 

Some of the most popular sandbars are

• Haulover Sandbar. It is located near North Miami Beach, west of Haulover Beach Marina, inside Haulover Cut.
• Bear Cut Sandbar. It’s in the northern section of Crandon Park, near Crandon Beach on Key Biscayne.
• Nixon Sandbar. This sandbar is part of Biscayne Bay, west of Key Biscayne, adjacent to Hurricane Harbor.
• Islamorada Sandbar (also known as Whale Channel Sandbar). It’s just offshore near Mile Marker 84 on the Atlantic Ocean side, in close proximity to Postcard Inn and Holiday Isles Marina.

Miami River

If you love downtown Miami, then the Miami River should be on your boating bucket list. This is such a fun and unique experience and a great way to view the city from a completely different perspective. 

You’ll see the Miami Riverwalk, award-winning restaurants, impressive skyscrapers, beautiful green spaces, lots of tropical and lush landscaping, and jaw-droopingly beautiful homes right on the water. 

Dry Tortugas National Park

This national park is a bit of a boat ride away from Miami , but it is so worth the time and effort. 

First of all, Dry Tortugas National Park is only accessible via boat or plane, so for the most part, it’s relatively uncrowded.

It’s 100 square miles and composed of seven islands. The highlight of your visit may be the massive Fort Jefferson, which was one of the largest forts in the US back in the 19th Century. While you’re here, you should get out, walk around, explore, look for wildlife, and even camp overnight during your stay, either on the boat or in a campground.

Historical Sites to Tour On the Water In Miami

Miami circle national historic landmark.

This historical site is an archeological site that was once a ceremonial place that was built at least 2000 years ago by the Tequesta people. 

Some people call it the Brickell Point Site. At this place, you’ll see the ceremonial circle and have the chance to learn about the native people who originally lived here, as well as discover this amazing site. 

Several artifacts were discovered and extracted from the site, including:

• 500 bone and tooth pieces
• pottery shards
• chipped stone
• partial and finished tools
• unmodified stone cobbles
• and hammerstone fragments
• galena (a highly prioritized metal that had many uses and worked as a currency)
• pumice (it does not naturally occur in Florida)
• shell tools

Another shockingly similar site to this one was located on the western side of Lake Okeechobee . 

You can find this site at Brickell Point, next to the Brickell Avenue Bridge, and the Wet Deck Lounge on the south side of the Miami River, at the river’s mouth. Its coordinates are 25.769454069315536, -80.18899514158508. 

The Barnacle Historic State Park

The Barnacle Historic State Park features a vibrant yellow Coconut Grove Home anchored on the shore of Biscayne Bay. It was built in 1891 by Ralph Middleton Monroe, a pioneer. He purchased forty acres of bayfront property for $400. He was careful to only cut a few trees to create a trail to the home, so even today, this park exhibits some of the best and most stunning old-growth trees in Miami. The house itself is the oldest still remaining in Miami Dade County. 

This spot is right on the water, and at one point, it was even a yacht club.

You can find it at 3485 Main Highway, Miami, FL 33133.

Cape Florida Lighthouse

This impressive lighthouse is the oldest structure in Miami-Dade County. Built in 1825, it has withstood many intense and dangerous storms and lived to tell the tale. 

Though this tall white lighthouse looks so dreamy and romantic today, the land it stands upon has a gruesome history of serving as the location to board Black Seminoles and slaves to ship off to the Bahamas. It later acted as a designated National Underground Network to Freedom Site. 

Now though, it is open for tours. You can walk to the top of it to see out over Key Biscayne, Biscayne Bay, into downtown Miami, over Stiltsville, and out across the Atlantic Ocean. 

You can find the Cape Florida Lighthouse at 1200 Crandon Blvd, Key Biscayne, FL 33149.  

The Centinel

The Centinel on Brackell Key is a large statue of Cheif Tuquesta, protecting the island. You can easily see the statue from the water, but the short walk around the perimeter of the beautiful Brackell Key is so pleasant that it’s worth the time it takes to get out and stretch your legs. 

Tribal Chief Tequesta lived at this location in the 19th Century. He and his people were hunters and gatherers who were skilled at the art of fishing (and spearing) sharks, sea cows, porpoises, and sailfish. 

They also had a healthy diet of shellfish, berries, nuts, and other fish in the river and ocean. Though they did not get along with the first settlers, understandably, they eventually created a friendship and regularly traded colorful cloth pieces, rum, and weapons.

It’s estimated that about 800 of them lived here, but by the 1800s, their population was nearly extinguished due to disease, battles with nearby settlers, and slavery. 

You can find the Centinel at 848 Brickell Key Dr, Miami, FL 33131. The spot is called Tequesta Point.

Are reservations required?

Yes, advanced reservations are required. You can reserve your tour by booking online.

What should I wear or bring with me?

Wear comfortable clothes. Basically, anything you would wear to go to the beach is fine. Flip-flops, sneakers or sandals are fine. You will be asked to remove your shoes on the boat. You should pack a light jacket depending on the weather. Bring a camera, sunblock, sunglasses and a towel (just in case).

Will I get wet?

Possibly. It is a boat tour on the water and sometimes the water can be choppy. We recommend that you dress accordingly, but most tours stay dry.

Is parking available?

Metered parking is available in-front of the Mondrian Hotel – 11oo West Avenue Miami Beach.

Is the tour offered in any other language?

No. We cannot offer the tour in another language at this time.

Are there any health restrictions?

Pregnant women and people who have back or neck injuries and/or pain should not go on our boat tours if the waters are rough.

What documents do I need to provide?

You will need to show some form of official identification, such as a valid driver’s license or passport.

Will the tour still go out if it’s raining?

We do not go out if it’s raining, however, sometimes on a tour we may get caught in the rain as the weather in Miami can change very quickly.

What’s the cancellation policy?

The tour is based on reservations, so it’s important that you let us know as soon as possible if you need to cancel. All cancellations must be done at least 24 hours before the time of the tour. After that time, no refunds will be made.

Guide to Miami: Things to do, where to stay and places to explore

Even if you've never been to Miami, you've sort of already been to Miami.

This South Florida city has starred countless times on the silver screen and television and is always coming up in popular music too, with many of these Miami-centric works becoming downright iconic.

All of this has painted such a vibrant picture of the city, that whether or not you've ever crossed over the city limits, you have years of stored-up visions of what this city will be like when you finally get there.

Considering all of this, when you visit for the first time, there's a bit of pressure to find the Miami you have always envisioned. I recently visited the city for the first time and the following is an account of how I tried to capture the essence of the city that I had dreamed of while also trying to see a couple of surprises along the way.

Sunrise start

I know you're on vacation, but you simply have to wake before dawn and take in a sunrise during your trip to Miami, preferably on your first morning. Darkness gives away to soft light as the sun slowly rises above the Atlantic Ocean, streaking the sky in hues of pink, gold and blue, casting a soft glow over the water and the sand below.

Famed for its prime role in revitalizing South Beach during the heady hedonistic days of the '90s, News Cafe is open 24/7 and located at the heart of South Beach (8th & Ocean Avenue). You’re probably going to pass it anyway so you might as well pull up a chair outside and chill for a bit.

Back in the day, this cafe was frequented by the glamorous, the fabulous and everyone in between as it served up one of the first slices of European cafe culture on South Beach — and today the pulse of the neighborhood still beats strong here.

If you're anything like me, you may know that Art Deco is synonymous with South Beach, but do you know the stories behind the style and the facades? That's where the Miami Design Preservation League's expert guides come in as they take travelers on daily jaunts through the Art Deco District each morning.  The guides tell the stories behind each building (you'll see Art Deco, Miami Modern and Mediterranean Revival on the tour), endearing you to their efforts to preserve these special buildings.

Eat old school

For more than a century, Joe's Stone Crab has been drawing crowds from far and wide for its famed crustaceans and no trip to Miami is complete without a stop here. Located in the vibrant heart of South Beach, Joe's is famed for its succulent stone crab claws plucked from nearby waters, alongside an array of other mouthwatering dishes. Think of it this way: everybody is going to ask you if you went to Joe's, so you might as well!

Sushi may not be the first thing that pops into your head when thinking of Miami, but why wouldn't it be great here? Enter Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill, which is an oasis of Japanese cuisine situated within the historic Plymouth Hotel South Beach (just past the retro-cool lobby and beside the beautiful pool). The menu is overseen by sushi master Toshi Ueki and chefs Bruce and Eric Bromberg and boasts a tantalizing selection of traditional sushi and sashimi, expertly crafted to perfection.

If you're wondering when this piece is going to leave dry land, the time is, well, now. I hooked up with Watersports Paradise — known for boat tours, yacht charters and boat rentals in addition to any other active water pursuit you can think of — for an unforgettable adventure through Miami's waterways.

We saw opulent Millionaire's Row and plied the waters across Biscayne Bay to marvel at the splendor of Star, Palm, Hibiscus and Venetian Islands with the occasional burst of speed to get the heart racing.

Where to stay in Miami on a first trip

On your first trip, you almost certainly have to stay in South Beach. This neighborhood has captured the world's imagination and because you're going to want to see what all the buzz is about, you might as well stay there.

When it comes time to start thinking about where and what type of South Beach hotel you'd like to stay in during your first trip to Miami, among the factors that loom large, two words stand head and shoulders above the rest: Art Deco.

I mean, you can't come to Miami for the first time and not stay in a historic hotel with the flourishes of Art Deco design, can you? And the hotel certainly has to have a fantastic pool, right?

I couldn't imagine it any other way and so that's why I'm glad I posted up at The Plymouth Hotel South Beach.

Located a stone's throw from the Miami Beach Convention Center and opposite Collins Park and its superb Bass Museum, The Plymouth has  more than 100 rooms splashed with sophisticated touches and is a true poster child for Art Deco. So much so that Barbara Baer Capitman used a photograph of the corner exterior of The Plymouth on the cover of her 1988 book Deco Delights.

Stepping inside, you're immediately enchanted by the seamless blend of historic Art Deco charm and contemporary luxury, with the overall atmosphere being a blend of boutique and beach-adjacent vibes.

Speaking of the beach, guests get exclusive access to The Plymouth's private stretch, just a block away between The W and The Setai. Like many great hotels, the lobby is perfect for lingering and I loved hanging out among the lush leaves and a stirring mural by the acclaimed Ramon Chatov. 

Then there's the 1940s Art Moderne pool area, one of the most perfectly formed bodies of water in the city. With its distinctive harlequin tiles and inviting peach and brown colors, it's a quintessential Miami backdrop. Like many first-time visitors to Miami, I left knowing this certainly wouldn't be my last visit and The Plymouth's pool was a big reason.

Diddy might be in the crosshairs of the feds right now -- and he may even be getting wrecked on social media -- but in real life ... it would appear the people still love him.

The hip-hop mogul has been laying low at his Star Island home in Miami ever since his two properties got raided -- stepping out here and there in public -- but on Sunday, there was yet another sign that folks still hold him in high regard ... at least in the Miami area anyway.

Take a look at this footage ... it was shot Sunday as a group of people were cruising by Diddy's estates there on the private island, and as you can see -- onlookers were starstruck.

Diddy could be seen strolling around outside of one of his homes there -- he owns two adjacent properties on Star Island, BTW -- and he was waving and smiling, not to mention interacting with the boat that was cruising by ... with each party exchanging pleasantries.

Just as we've seen for these past several days ... Diddy isn't really hiding right now, even though he's facing a very serious situation as the feds dig into heavy allegations against him. Remember ... just the other day, he went out for a bike ride in broad daylight by himself.

Even there ... he ran into a group of locals on the road, and they were singing his praises.

So the question ... what's the temperature on the Diddy sitch with the public right now? If you check X -- it would appear most people have turned on him ... that, or they're just down to mock and ridicule him, which has been happening ever since the raids 2 weeks ago.

When it comes to his A-list friends -- many of whom have partied with him and enjoyed his company during the good times -- they've by and large remained silent through all this .

On the ground, however, it seems he still has fans/defenders -- which is interesting. Time will tell if this changes as time goes on -- but for now, it feels like Diddy is beloved in FL.

Two Art Deco Icons Poised for a Renaissance

Tamara de Lempicka, a painter favored by celebrities and designers, is being revisited. Plus, a historical Miami building reopens as a hotel and private club.

Madonna clearly was onto something when, in the late 1980s, she began collecting the artworks of Tamara de Lempicka, a Polish, Art Deco-era painter known at the height of her fame for her portraits of a louche, and often elite, Parisian society.

Lempicka, whose celebrity crested in the years between the two world wars, left Paris for Beverly Hills, Calif., in 1939. In her prime, the artist liked to portray herself as a self-infatuated femme fatale, projecting the kind of icy hauteur that is often a magnet for fashion tribes.

By the time she died in 1980 , Lempicka’s reputation had been eclipsed by a generation of younger artists, her work dismissed as overwrought and out of tune with the times. But in the decades since, interest in the artist has risen thanks in part to enthusiastic collectors like Barbra Streisand ; Jack Nicholson ; the fashion designers Donna Karan and Wolfgang Joop ; and pop music’s Material Girl.

“I have a ton of her paintings in New York,” Madonna told Vanity Fair in a 1990 interview . “I have a Lempicka museum.” The singer has also made reference to the artist and her works in some of her music videos and performances, including at concerts for her recent Celebration Tour .

Lempicka’s highly mannered, hyper-glamorized, and erotically charged portraiture is the subject of “The World of Tamara: A Celebration of Lempicka and Art Deco,” a new exhibition and sale at Sotheby’s in New York on view through April 18. It includes works like “Nu aux buildings,” which depicts a nude woman with a pale textile draped over the lower half of her body, and “La Polonaise,” a portrait of a woman whose hair is covered by a vibrant floral-print veil.

The Sotheby’s exhibition has been timed to coincide with the Broadway opening of “Lempicka,” a biographical musical , on April 14, which, along with the exhibition, is a sort of curtain raiser for the first American retrospective of the artist’s work opening this fall at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

Nick Deimel, a vice president and head of private sales at Sotheby’s, said Lempicka “was not only an artist, but a self-determined woman, a mother, a wife and a lover to a number of women and men.” She was also a fashion aficionado given to draping herself in satins and silks.

“Lempicka crafted her own image,” Mr. Deimel said, “much in the ways people do on social media today.” (Or, much like Madonna Louise Ciccone did as she became a pop star.)

“That’s one reason she resonated so much with the next generations of fashion designers and other creative people,” he said.

Moore Luxury in Miami

The Moore Furniture Building in Miami, another Art Deco icon, was built in the 1920s on a former pineapple farm in what is now part of that city’s Design District. In its early days, the building was occupied by — you guessed it — a furniture business; in recent years, as the Design District has flourished, the building has been used for art shows and as the temporary home of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami.

Soon the structure, which has been designated as a historical site in Florida and is owned by the Miami developer Craig Robins, will begin a new chapter as a hotel and a private club . The Moore’s glow-up, overseen by WoodHouse, a Dallas developer of social clubs and entertainment spaces, also included the addition of a new lobby restaurant, Elastika, which shares its name with the monumental sculpture by Zaha Hadid installed in the building’s cavernous atrium. (A representative for the Moore declined to disclose the cost of its latest transformation.)

Its private club is meant to be a grown-up variation on Soho Beach House Miami , and is just blocks away from ZZ’s Club, a private dining club opened in 2021 by the group behind the restaurant Carbone .

Membership, according to promotional copy, will comprise a “carefully selected community of global leaders, innovators and tastemakers.” Such types on a list of founding members include the fashion designer Francisco Costa ; the model Karolina Kurkova ; the beauty entrepreneur Barbara Sturm; and the jewelry designer and actor Waris Ahluwalia .
