The Psychedelic Furs: Royal Albert Hall, London – live review

The Psychedelic Furs

The Psychedelic Furs | Jah Wobble & The Invaders of the Heart | Wasted Youth Royal Albert Hall, London 5th April 2022

Third time lucky, The Psychedelic Furs finally make it to the Royal Albert Hall for their very special show celebrating the release of critically acclaimed album Made Of Rain in 2020.  They bring with them recently reformed Wasted Youth and Jah Wobble & Invaders Of The Heart as special guests.

From The Lexington to the Royal Albert Hall in a matter of days, as recently reformed ‘70s post punk outfit Wasted Youth take to this iconic stage it’s still quite early and the Hall is not yet half full – a lot of people are milling around in the various bars, oblivious. Meanwhile original members singer Ken Scott and guitarist Rocco Barker cut a striking contrast; Scott menacingly goth preacherman, with hat and walking stick, against Barker’s yellow ruffles and shades. Together with Ray ‘Sonic’ Hanson (Thee Hypnotics) on guitar, Hans Perrson (Flesh for Lulu) on drums, Barker’s wife TC (Miranda Sex Garden) on bass, and original member Nick Nicole on tambourine, they deliver their six song set loudly and efficiently; set highlights are Paris France and finale Do The Caveman, which in these civilised surroundings is missing a serious mosh pit and beer chucking. It’s a great set by a legendary band who predated and may well have been an influence on how The Jesus And Mary Chain looked and sounded some years later. Those who stayed in the bar instead of witnessing this missed something special.

Wasted Youth

Whether it’s the current line-up, which sees the Butler brothers surrounded by an intensely strong musicianship, the quality of the songs both old and new, or just their sheer energy, the Furs continue to be one of the UK’s most important bands, relevant just as much today as they were 40 years ago.

Personally, the arrival of Made Of Rain during the depression, solitude and anxiety of the first lockdowns in 2020 was a blinding ray of purple sunshine. When I first heard I Believe, with its dense wall of guitar pierced by resounding sax, I was totally confused because I thought it must be a track from Forever Now which I’d, surely impossibly, missed.  You’ll Be Mine, surely the best song on the album, effectively reached straight into our chests and grabbed at our then isolated hearts, Richard Butler reassuring and demanding compliance at the same time.

Roll on to 2022 and the Furs are finally here, with the tour that they’ve had to reschedule umpteen times due to Covid. The Royal Albert Hall is disappointingly not as full as it should be, presumably due to the lost dates, and the arena section is all-seated, guarded by strict security tasked with keeping enthusiastic fans back from the stage, but as the band weave their magic and the audience energy grows, these things become irrelevant and barely noticeable.

From the minute he strides onto the stage, Richard Butler holds us in the palm of his hand, with his passionate articulation of his clever lyrics with emphatic gestures and expressions and constant connection with the audience.  It’s really difficult not to watch only him. Dragging our eyes away, with him tonight are Tim Butler (bass), Rich Good (guitar), Amanda Kramer (keyboard), Mars Williams (sax) and Zack Alford (drums), plus original guitarist Roger ‘Dog’ Morris is back for some of the older tracks, with roadie guitar tech Denis also making an appearance.

The Psychedelic Furs

Interspersed are the new tracks: You’ll Be Mine fills the Hall with a wall of sound and it’s at this point that I first notice the drummer isn’t Paul Garisto.  Zack Alford from the States more than proves himself worthy of his Bowie/Springsteen/B52s pedigree, he’s like an octopus back there, driving us forward with impossible beats.   He again comes to the fore in Don’t Believe, reminiscent of the way The Cure’s Jason Cooper handles Burn: all eyes on him.

Ash Wednesday is one of a couple of songs (Wrong Train also) that sees Richard Butler moving softly into the vacuum left by David Bowie, his voice hypnotic and gently lulling us.  Amanda Kramer chimes in with gentle harmony – she’s an understated but crucial presence as always. Richard happens to be singing about the catastrophic end of a relationship, “…love lies murdered…”, and even if our relationship hasn’t just broken up we are still heartbroken.  And Richard is there to comfort us. At this point, this incredible song in this incredible venue, he could be singing about sandwich wrapping and we’d still be spellbound.

The forceful isolation of No One, with Tim Butler’s driving bass resonating off the Hall’s acoustic mushrooms (they really are called that), pushing the devastating point home, is stunning.  Rich Good’s guitar chimes in, there’s a thin shard of light across the gloom and we’re holding on for dear life.

This Will Never Be Like Love gives Mars Williams one of several opportunities to show off his extraordinary saxophone skills, although amazingly he tops even this in the encore in both Sister Europe, even upstaging the outrageous gyrating and pouting of Richard Butler, and somehow generating a ridiculously high note that has everyone gasping in India.

India is a genius and logical end to this incredible set – following Sister Europe, both taking us beyond the Hall’s curfew and back to the very beginning of this band’s journey. They’re spilling into the plush aisles, the security guards have given up, everyone’s on their feet, even in the corporate seats, and none of us want this perfect night in this amazing venue to end.

We dance upon the carpet floor And reel around

Great review of a great night. Thanks! Glad made it early for WY.

I was at the Manchester gig, as was John Robb and the equally famous Ged Duffy. This review applies 100% to that gig. Brilliant

Great night wasn’t it Chris!

Saw them in Bristol last night – totally mesmerising, what a gig!

Your fantastic review could equally apply to any of the other Furs gigs on this tour. They were excellent throughout and the sound quality has been amazing. Thank you for your review which gives them the credit that they deserve so very much.

Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs performing at Royal Albert Hall.

The Psychedelic Furs review – suave, sinister rockers are pretty in black

Royal Albert Hall, London Frontman Richard Butler is now 65, but his nicotine rasp remains a thing of wonder and the band’s pop smarts mean they have aged well

W hen you’ve waited nearly 30 years to make a record, what’s a two-year delay in touring it? Such is the fate of the Psychedelic Furs, who in 2020 released Made of Rain, their first album since 1991, only to find the gigs to promote it stymied by the first Covid lockdown.

“Sorry about all the cancellations we’ve had! It’s good to see you all,” drawls Richard Butler, although it’s a surprise he can see anything at all through his inevitable rock’n’roll shades. The vocalist remains an elegant stick insect, a tremendously compelling old-school frontman possessed of a winningly imperious swagger.

The Psychedelic Furs formed in the post-punk rush of 1977 yet their provenance was far more classicist. Art-rockers to their preening core, they took their name from the Velvet Underground’s song Venus in Furs and their musical cues from the doomed-glamour leftfield pop of Roxy Music and, overwhelmingly, David Bowie.

The six-piece started out all attitude and angularity but broke into the mainstream, on both sides of the Atlantic, in the 80s when they embraced pop smarts, radio-friendly melodies and killer tunes. Typical was the honeyed The Ghost in You, dedicated tonight to recently deceased punk icon Jordan and a fantastic slice of suave, sinister pop noir.

Butler’s nicotine rasp of a vocal remains a thing of wonder on Pretty in Pink , a misreading of which famously inspired John Hughes’s 1986 high-school romcom movie. Tonight’s set has lulls: new tracks Don’t Believe and Ash Wednesday are broodingly atmospheric but lack the barbed-velvet alchemy that the band summon at their peak. Yet the 65-year-old Butler is still a fantastic showman, all bows, feints and cross-legged crouches on the mannered croon of 1984 single Heaven.

The Psychedelic Furs encore with the opening two tracks of their self-titled 1980 debut album: the immaculate angst of Sister Europe and the adrenaline flail of India, which could be John Lydon’s Public Image Ltd in a fearful bate. The songs, like the band, have aged disgracefully well.

The venue was great. Even though I was towards the back of the theatre it was small enough that I was still comfortably close.

The opening act had a good voice but was very monotonous sounding. He only played about 40 minutes.

The Furs were awesome! They played most of the most well know songs and a few lesser known songs. I knew all but about 3. They sounded great and Richard Butler’s voice hasn’t changed.

I felt like I was transported back to my teenage days. My only complaint was that the Furs only played for an hour. But, my ticket was only $35+booking fees so it was a really inexpensive night of great entertainment. It left me giddy the rest of the night.

The Ponte Vedra Concert Hall is a former church converted to music venue. It's a little small and seating was composed of folding chairs. The concession area was separated from the hall by a couple of curtains and there was a lot of noise from people at the concession area laughing and shouting during Royston Langdon's opening that was really distracting. Additionally, the speakers could have been toned down for the small size of the venue as the volume was on the verge of painful for those of us that were in proximity to the stage.

That said...

The show was fantastic. Royston Langdon opened and I was very impressed. His voice was amazing. I had never heard his music before and was pleasantly surprised by how good he was. He did a number of songs from his album 'Leeds' and finished his set with an absolutely beautiful cover of David Bowie's 'Space Oddity'.

What can I say about The Psychedelic Furs? I've seen several bands from the 80's in the past few years and been saddened by how much their lead singer's voices has deteriorated over the years.

That certainly isn't the case for The Psychedelic Furs. They sound just like they did back in the 80's. It's almost as if the past (almost 40!) years didn't exist. Lead singer Richard Butler's distinctive voice is more mature than it used to be but he basically sounds just like he did back in the heyday of the band. Richard danced and moved around the stage with all the energy and joyfulness of a 20-year-old which is amazing since he turns 63 in June!! He's still having fun and obviously loves what he does.

Guitarist Rich Good pumped out some blistering solos during the concert that brought back memories of going home with my ears ringing following concerts back in the 80's.

Saxophone player Mars Williams put on one hell of a show. Sax was present in so many of the 80's classic hits and Williams showed us the incredible sound that a true professional can wring out of the instrument. I brought my 17-year-old daughter to the show and she had never heard saxophone played live. She was wide-eyed and jaw dropped as he played through several solos. It was gratifying to introduce her to what a real band sounds like in this age of auto-tuned committee-produced junk.

Bottom Line: If you already love The Psychedelic Furs, you won't be disappointed. If you don't love them, go see them anyway, you'll learn to love them.

Absolutely delightful show. Even better than I had hoped it would be. The band was obviously having a blast performing, very energetic, animated and interactive with the audience, as well as one another.

And the lead singer was on point! Very personable and engaging, as well as professional. Had a great report with the crowd and chatted between songs.

Wonderful stage presence all around and a real treat to see live after all these years.

I would definitely see them again if I get the chance and will recommend them to anyone.

Squeeze & Boy George: '80s Icons Unite for Co-Headlining U.S. Summer Tour

G et ready for a double dose of new wave nostalgia. Iconic artists Squeeze and Boy George are hitting the road together for a U.S. tour this summer.

Squeeze is coming back to the U.S. after a series of shows in 2023, co-headlining with the Psychedelic Furs . The band's co-founders and songwriters Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook are celebrating their 50-year partnership, first meeting as teenagers in the London suburb of Greenwich when Difford placed an ad in a sweetshop window looking for a guitarist. Tilbrook was the only one who responded, and two forged a bond with songwriting, as Difford composed the lyrics and then handed them over to Tilbrook for the melodies.

Never miss a story — sign up for the Q newsletter for the latest music news on all your favorite artists, all in one place.

The group incarnations have fluctuated back and forth, with their most well-known songs coming in the late '70s, including "Up The Junction" and "Cool For Cats." They scored visually for being one of the first new wave bands to be featured in the early days of MTV and gaining critical plaudits for their 1981 release East Side Story .

The current lineup – Difford, Tilbrook, keyboardist Stephen Large and drummer Simon Hanson (since 2007), percussionist/backing vocalist Steve Smith (since 2017), pedal/lap steel guitarist Melvin Duffy (since 2019), and Owen Biddle, former bassist for the Roots (who joined in 2020) – are reportedly recording material for two albums, one of brand new material and one derived from unrecorded songs written by Difford and Tilbrook from their earliest songwriting days.

Boy George has been musically busy, fresh from a starring role on Broadway in Moulin Rouge and contributing to the soundtrack for the Apple Original film Argylle . George, best known as the frontperson for Culture Club, also became a forward-facing figure on MTV in the early '80s. With his androgynous persona and flamboyant styling, Culture Club racked up numerous hits including "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me," "Karma Chameleon," "Church of the Poison Mind" and "Miss Me Blind."

Legal troubles, including a stint in prison, brought his career to a halt in the mid-2000s. However, he has bounced back creatively with his most public gig as a judge on The Voice UK and The Voice Australia . In 2015, he received an Ivor Novello Award from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors for Outstanding Services to British Music.

Squeeze and Boy George will be performing at the below venues. Ticket information for U.K. and U.S. shows are available here .

Khabarovsk is the industrial, transport, administrative and cultural centre of the Khabarovsk region. The city was founded in 1858 as a military outpost. It is located 8532km east of Moscow and 30km from the Chinese border. After passing through the isolated Siberian towns on the Trans-Siberian railway, tourists often find Khabarovsk an unexpected surprise with its numerous green parks, riverside paths and historic downtown area. If you do get to spend a day in Khabarovsk then a definite must is to visit the Far East Regional Museum, which is extremely well laid out and gives detailed historical examples. Also worth a visit if you have time, is the beautifully restored Fine Arts Museum overlooking the Amur River, which includes Russian masterpieces, early Slavic icons and a collection of Western European art.

If you happen to visit in summer then you may not want to spend any time inside and there are plenty of places to relax outside. One option is Dynamo Park, which is extremely popular with the locals. A 30 hectare park featuring several water ponds to dip your feet in when it gets too hot! Another outside spot to relax is the city ‘beach’. Although it’s over 300km from the nearest coastline, the river bank does give a feeling of relaxing on a beach somewhere in the Mediterranean.

The best way to get to Khabarovsk is on the Trans-Siberian railroad but there is also a well-served airport connecting to most of the major cities in Russia.
