The Queensland Government Is Giving Out 50,000 $50 Tourism Vouchers to Use on the Gold Coast

When was the last time that you went to one of the Gold Coast's theme parks, or Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary ? Took a tour on Tamborine Mountain? Hit up one of the coastal city's other attractions, such as Dracula's or the SkyPoint Observation Deck? Whether it's been forever or you're a local, the Queensland Government wants southeast Queenslanders to play tourist on the Goldie over the next few months — and it's giving away $50 vouchers to help.

Since the beginning of the pandemic , everyone knows how these tourism initiatives work, and why. This one comes after the Gold Coast suffered severe weather over the period at the end of 2023 and beginning of 2024, impacting summer getaway bookings. Accordingly, the state's powers that be are attempting to assist the industry by encouraging folks to add the area to their plans sometime soon.

Under the name GC Summer FUNds, and as part of a partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland and Experience Gold Coast, there's 50,000 vouchers up for grabs. The government has committed $2.5 million to the program.

Queensland Premiere Steven Miles announced the scheme on Monday, January 15, with vouchers available for redemption from midday the same day. You have until 11.59pm AEST on Friday, March 29, 2024 to get in on the action — or until 50,000 redemptions have been made

"The Gold Coast is one of Queensland's tourism hot spots because of the world class attractions and experiences on offer," said the Premier.

"This summer, our tourism operators have been some of the hardest hit here and in Cairns, so it's time we help them get back on their feet."

As always, there are caveats. Using the vouchers involves entering the code "GCSUMMERFUNDS" when you're making a new booking via the initiative's website, but you have to spend $100 or more to qualify. There's also only one voucher available per southeast Queensland resident — and, as well as needing to be 18 or over, you do need to live in Brisbane metro or CBD, the Gold Coast, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Logan, Moreton Bay, Noosa, Redland, Scenic Rim, Somerset, the Sunshine Coast or Toowoomba.

You'll be required to enter your residential address when you book, and the scheme's terms and conditions advise that it will be adding extra verification via checking IP addresses.

And that end date? It's just as the Easter long weekend kicks off — so you'll need to have Gold Coast plans before then.

Applications for the 50,000 $50 GC Summer FUNds travel vouchers are opening now until 11.59pm AEST on Friday, March 29, 2024 — or until 50,000 redemptions have been made. For more information, or to apply during the aforementioned window, head to the initiative's website .

Queensland holiday vouchers on offer again, this time for Greater Brisbane and the Whitsundays

Heart Reef

More than $4 million worth of holiday vouchers will be up for grabs in Queensland in the coming days to boost tourism in Greater Brisbane and the Whitsundays.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced early this morning a second round of the deals, following last month's popular Great Barrier Reef Holiday Dollars scheme .

There will be 30,000 vouchers, worth $100, on offer to give recipients 50 per cent off selected tourism experiences and accommodation in Brisbane, the Scenic Rim and Moreton Bay regions.

Brisbane locals will be eligible to enter the draw for a voucher, which will be open for 72 hours from April 27.

The lottery will be conducted using a random electronic draw and winners will receive their voucher by email and text on May 6.

Also, from May 4, there will be 6,000 vouchers, up to $200 each available to people already staying in the Whitsundays, through local hotels of visitor information centres.

Ms Palaszczuk said the money can be used on things like Great Barrier Reef trips and guided tours.

"This will pump millions of dollars back into our economy and help tourism operators doing it tough,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

"We've seen how successful this program has been in Cairns – supporting local businesses and local jobs at a time the industry needs it most.

"From climbing the Story Bridge, to immersing yourself in an Indigenous cultural experience or going on an adventure in the Scenic Rim or on the bay – there's something for everyone here in the southeast," she said.

Ms Palaszczuk also flagged the government would soon announce a similar voucher scheme for the Gold Coast, as well as other incentives for domestic tourists to visit Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef.

"It's been a challenging 12 months for tourism businesses in the Whitsundays – many of which are geared primarily towards the international market," she said.

Like the previous round, the lottery will be offered through Queensland.com.

Tourism voucher giveaway to support tourism operators in South East Queensland

The Queensland Government allocates a $2.5 million funding boost to aid storm-affected tourism operators in South East Queensland, offering 50,000 $50 vouchers for the GC Summer FUNds initiative, aiming to revive the Gold Coast's attractions and experiences after severe weather disruptions.

In the aftermath of recent severe storms that wreaked havoc in South East Queensland, the Queensland Government has announced a $2.5 million funding boost to support struggling tourism operators.

South East Queenslanders will be able to access 50,000 vouchers, each worth $50, to spend on an experience across the Gold Coast as part of the GC Summer FUNds initiative.

The vouchers will give visitors $50 off some of the Gold Coast’s best attractions and experiences, including the major theme parks.

The additional financial aid aims to assist businesses in recovering from the damages incurred during the adverse weather conditions.

Tourism operators, particularly those located in areas heavily impacted by the storms, have faced significant challenges in the wake of the natural disaster. Many businesses have reported extensive damage to infrastructure and facilities, leading to disruptions in their operations.

“We have weathered many storms and setbacks over the past decade, but the recent weather events forced a temporary closure, leading to high cancellations and booking hesitancy from guests in our normally busy period, which challenged the very essence of our watersport haven,” Go Vertical Stand Up Paddle Board & Kayak Owner Linda Spiteri said.

“Now, despite the setbacks, I am excited to get behind Summer FUNds so that locals and visitors can experience Gold Coast’s beautiful waterways first-hand.”

The program is funded in partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland and Experience Gold Coast.

As communities strive to rebuild and restore normalcy, the government's funding boost offers a glimmer of hope for storm-ravaged tourism operators, providing essential support to aid in their recovery efforts.

The Queensland government has launched the latest round of its holiday dollars campaign to boost the embattled tourism sector.

The draw to win one of 30,000 vouchers to the value of $100 for Sunshine State residents opened at midday on Tuesday and will run until midday Friday.

The gift will be available to spend on tourism experiences in the city’s greater region, including Brisbane City, Scenic Rim, Moreton Bay, Redlands Coast, Somerset, Logan and Ipswich.

Queenslanders over the age of 18 can enter the draw via queensland.com, and vouchers must be redeemed between May 6 and August 15, 2021.

Queensland tourists are encouraged to travel to greater Brisbane, including Stradbroke Island on the Redlands Coast.

The voucher will cover 50 per cent of the cost of eligible experiences – including accommodation, guided tours, adventure experiences, day spas, scenic flights and zoos – up to the value of $100.

An additional 6000 vouchers worth $200 for the Whitsundays have also been announced, with Queenslanders in the region from May 4 able to claim a voucher from local hotels or visitor information centres.

The vouchers can be used to claim 50 per cent off any eligible tourism experience booked, up to the value of $200.

The new travel vouchers come after a wildly successful campaign to drive travellers to the Cairns region, where more than 100,000 people applied for 15,000 vouchers valued at up to $200.

The 72-hour fare sale is offering deals to popular tourist spots across the country, with peak school holiday time included in the deal.

Just days after Qantas announced a major shakeup to the Frequent Flyer program, rival airline Virgin Australia has a new change for members.

Qantas has announced a snap sale on its domestic network with the cheapest route starting at $105.

Queensland offers $50 tourism vouchers in $2.5 million boost for storm-affected businesses

Wineries, tour operators, and surf instructors across the Gold Coast region stand to benefit from $2.5 million in state government support funding, as part of a new entertainment voucher system designed to help businesses bounce back from recent extreme weather events.

Visitors and residents in the south-east Queensland region can now secure $50 off a wide range of experiences through the GC Summer FUNds initiative.

It promises to deliver 50,000 vouchers overall, stimulating tourism, entertainment, and hospitality providers whose summer trade was hampered by major storms over the New Year period.

Eligible vendors include Australian Kayaking Adventures, which offers dolphin-spotting tours and sunset expeditions, or board riding lessons in Surfers Paradise from Go Ride A Wave.

Those seeking a low-key getaway can use the voucher for a tour and tasting at Sirromet Winery, while more adventurous tourists can secure $50 off a glow worm tour in O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat.

Some passes to larger businesses, like DreamWorld, Warner Bros. Movie World, and Wet ‘n’ Wild, are also covered by the GC Summer FUNds scheme.

The vouchers are valid for experiences undertaken before March 29, 2024.

In a Monday statement, Queensland Premier Steven Miles said particularly harsh weather conditions across Queensland necessitated a response from the state government.

“This summer our tourism operators have been some of the hardest hit here and in Cairns, so it’s time we help them get back on their feet,” he said.

The funding is “good news for the economy, good news for jobs and, of course, good news for tourism operators,” he continued.

The scheme was based on the voucher initiative launched by the former Palaszczuk government in early 2021 when the state’s borders were still largely closed to interstate and international visitors due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“This is a proven strategy that we know works well to get locals and visitors alike exploring their own backyard and the immediate injection will help to stimulate our economic recovery,” Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said of the new scheme.

Voucher funding for businesses in south-east Queensland arrives after the launch of discounted interstate and intrastate flights to Cairns through airlines Qantas and Jetstar, jointly funded by the state and federal governments.

That initiative came as part of a $5 million funding boost intended to support businesses affected by Tropical Cyclone Jasper, and an estimated $300 million in canceled bookings between early December and the start of January.

Visitors and residents interested in the GC Summer FUNds initiative can access the comparison website here.

Queensland to hand out 15,000 travel vouchers to help rescue far north's Covid-hit tourism industry

The vouchers, worth $200 each, will be available to Queensland residents and allocated by ballot

The Queensland government will hand out 15,000 travel vouchers worth up to $200 each in an attempt to stimulate domestic tourism and drive the state’s Covid-19 recovery.

Queensland’s premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, announced the voucher scheme on Sunday, as the state again recorded no new locally acquired Covid-19 cases.

The vouchers will be able to be used in Queensland’s far north – including the Great Barrier Reef, Port Douglas and Cairns – until the end of June, covering the Easter holidays.

“We know that the people in the far north, especially the tourism industry, are doing it tough,” she told reporters.

“We have decided that we want to make sure that people across Queensland get to enjoy tropical far north Queensland, but most importantly, let’s help people who need help the most.”

BREAKING: 15,000 travel vouchers worth up to $200 are up for grabs for Queenslanders to discover Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef. Residents will need to enter a ballot to obtain one of the vouchers.

The Palaszczuk government has repeatedly demanded the federal government extend financial support to the tourism industry beyond the end of jobkeeper at the end of March.

The government has been considering providing a targeted support package for the industry, but has yet to make an announcement.

Palaszczuk’s call for an extension of the wage subsidy for tourism operators was criticised by her counterparts in southern states, with NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian saying the state had been a victim of its own strict border closures.

Queensland’s move to introduce vouchers follows similar schemes set up by New South Wales , South Australia and Victoria.

NSW’s scheme gives $100 per person for meals, movies, zoo visits and more in certain areas. It has been running since early February, targeting hard-hit areas, where tourism has suffered or business activity has declined.

The NSW scheme relies on residents spending at registered venues. By the start of the second stage of the program in late February, only 3,500 businesses had registered.

The South Australian scheme offers $100 vouchers for Adelaide CBD accomodation and $50 vouchers for regional and suburban accomodation. Its second round experienced huge demand. About 75,000 vouchers were snapped up in 40 minutes, and the South Australian Tourism Commission chief executive, Rodney Harrex, said the website was getting 112,000 requests per minute at its peak.

“In the first hour of the program, there were 3.1 million requests to southaustralia.com – a very strong indication that the vouchers were in high demand, and South Australians are keen to support our state’s tourism sector,” he said.

Victoria’s scheme, now in its third stage, offers $200 to help cover regional holidays.

The program ran into some difficulties early on. When the first vouchers were released in late December, the state government’s website crashed.

The vouchers in the second round – about 40,000 in total – were allocated within 30 minutes. The next round opens at 10am on 30 March 2021.

The voucher schemes have been welcomed by the tourism sector, which has been hit hard by the loss of international arrivals and constant border closures.

Mark Olsen, chief executive of Tourism Tropical North Queensland, said the scheme announced on Sunday would inject $14m into the region.

“That’s because all of those Australians who have been coming up since the borders closed, those first timers and ‘haven’t been in a long-timers’, have been absolutely loving their experience in Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef,” Olsen said.

The Queensland scheme will open for ballot entries between 8 March and 11 March. The vouchers can be used from 15 March to 25 June.

The Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory are also running voucher schemes.

Queensland government announces $200 travel vouchers to help struggling tourism industry.

Alex Turner-Cohen

Man wrangles goanna in Cairns food court

The Queensland government plans to hand out $200 vouchers in a bid to boost its struggling tourism industry.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland announced on Sunday that 15,000 lucky Queenslanders are up for the vouchers.

The Cairns Holiday Dollars can be used for a “tourism experience” in far north Queensland, in the Cairns and Great Barrier Reef area.

The activity must occur between March 15 to June 25. The draw to receive a voucher starts from Monday and closes on March 11.

Only Queenslanders are eligible for the generous discount.

It comes after the state’s premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk , repeatedly urged the federal government to extend JobKeeper payments past its March end date to help Queensland’s tourist sector which has been decimate by COVID-19.

The vouchers can be used to claim 50 per cent off one a tourist experience, up to a maximum of $200.

So for instance, if you sign up for an activity that costs $300, the voucher will cover $150 of that cost.

The discount only applies to some activities.

On their website, the tourism body listed bungy jumping, canyoning, white water rafting, and skydiving as examples of a “tourism experience”.

Galleries, water-based activities and wildlife parks also fall under that definition.

Dining experiences count as being an experience, as long as they are included in a tourism activity.

Transport to get you to a tourism experience can also be covered by the voucher.

Day Spa packages are only eligible for half price if you pay for a minimum of two treatments.

Tourists can register their interest on Queensland.com where consumers can use their vouchers in the payment process.

“Tourism has taken a hit during the pandemic, and those who depend on international visitors have been doing it particularly tough – especially up north,” Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said on social media.

“So if you‘ve ever wanted to visit Tropical North Queensland, now’s the time – Queensland is the place to be.”

Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef have been described as one of the “hardest hit regions” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gold coast holiday dollars launch.

JOINT STATEMENT

Premier and Minister for Trade The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk

Minister for Tourism Industry Development and Innovation and Minister for Sport The Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe

The Palaszczuk Government will deliver 30,000 tourism vouchers to entice visitors to head to the Gold Coast as part of the next stage of Queensland’s successful Holiday Dollars program.

The Holiday Dollars initiative is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s economic recovery plan and is designed to support tourism businesses to recover from the impacts of COVID-19.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the government had partnered with Destination Gold Coast to deliver 30,000 vouchers worth $100 to be redeemed on the Coast.

The Premier said Queenslanders had 72 hours to enter the draw starting at midday on Monday 7 June 2021.

“Today’s announcement will give Queenslanders an even greater incentive to head to the Gold Coast for a holiday,” the Premier said.

“Tourism operators on the Coast have been hit hard by the pandemic.

“Campaigns like this are an important part of our economic recovery plan - supporting local jobs and injecting funds back into Gold Coast businesses.”

The Premier encouraged Queenslanders to get online and book holidays.

“With whale watching season about to start, now is an ideal time to book a whale watching tour and see these beautiful animals in the flesh,” the Premier said.

“From world class beaches to the beautiful hinterland, our theme parks and renowned shopping and nightlife precincts – the Gold Coast has something for everyone.

“Jump in the car for a trip or fly down for a weekend or week-long stay. All Queenslanders are eligible so get online and apply for a tourism voucher.”

Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said Gold Coast Holiday Dollars would help tourism operators bridge the dip in the traditional visitor cycle.

“The Palaszczuk Government has worked closely with the local tourism industry to deliver a Holiday Dollars campaign that works for operators,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“In other regions where we’ve piloted Holiday Dollars the feedback from tourism operators and visitors is positive.

“We’re also expecting a big boost in visitor confidence on the Gold Coast because that’s been the experience where Holiday Dollars have been rolled out.

“Not only is the Gold Coast one of Australia’s favourite holiday destinations, it was also on the bucket list of 1.1 million overseas visitors before the pandemic shut the international border.

“We know the loss of overseas visitors continues to be felt on the Gold Coast.

“That’s why the Holiday Dollars initiative is designed to encourage Queenslanders to indulge in a world-class Gold Coast visitor experience and support local operators when they really need it.

“Now is the time to start planning your Gold Coast holiday.

“Our highly successful Good to Go campaign has already put $5 billion into the pockets of Queensland tourism operators.

“ Good to Go continues to air interstate and in New Zealand to inspire travellers to book their next Gold Coast break.”

Minister for the Environment, Great Barrier Reef, Minister for Science and Youth Affairs and Member for Gaven Meaghan Scanlon said the Gold Coast Holiday Dollars initiative was a great incentive for families.

“No matter what time of year, there are always great visitor experiences on the Gold Coast to discover,” Ms Scanlon said.

“The Palaszczuk Government’s Holiday Dollars initiative comes at just the right time for both tourism operators and families preparing for a school holiday getaway.

“For Queensland families across our big state, Holiday Dollars makes the Gold Coast the perfect school holiday destination with something for everyone.”

Destination Gold Coast CEO Patricia O’Callaghan said the Gold Coast Holiday Dollars program is well timed to encourage Queenslanders to ‘come and play’ in Australia’s undisputed holiday playground.

“Previous iterations of the program have been a success and we are hoping Queenslanders will get behind Gold Coast tourism operators - the backbone of our chief economic sector this winter,” said Ms O’Callaghan.

“This initiative will provide to a much-needed boost to operators especially those that are heavily reliant on international visitors. Stimulating domestic visitor demand and expenditure for our 4,600 tourism businesses is a priority.

“From golden beaches to rainforest hinterland, theme parks and plethora of memorable experiences and attractions, now is the time to reconnect and relax with loved ones and friends in the Gold Coast.”

Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to
