When Can I Raft on the Colorado River?
AVA Rafting operates guided trips on the Colorado River from May through October, weather dependent; however, you may also rent gear from us outside of that time frame and raft the Colorado River on a self-guided adventure.
How Far Away is the Colorado River?
Our Kremmling Outpost on the Colorado River is less than 2 hours from Denver, Colorado, about an hour away from Breckenridge and Summit County, and 1 hour from Rocky Mountain National Park.
What is the Minimum Age for Rafting on the Colorado River?
With AVA Rafting, children as young as 2 years old can go on our Colorado River rafting trips. For overnight rafting trips on the Colorado River, the age minimum is 5 years old.
What Should I Wear?
For your Colorado River rafting trip, we recommend wearing quick-drying clothes, a swimsuit and shoes that are secure to your feet-flip flops or crocs will not be permitted. You may have the opportunity to jump in and swim, so you’ll want to be wearing something that will dry quickly. Avoid wearing cotton material as it is slow to dry.
What Should I Bring?
You may spend some time swimming in the Colorado River, as the calmer waters make for a great swimming. We suggest bringing an extra pair of clothes to change into after your trip. You should also bring waterproof sunscreen and sunglasses.

Current river conditions
Colorado white water rafting season is coming up fast!
Rafting on Clear Creek starts fast! We are targeting May 11th. As the days start to lengthen in May, the winter snowpack melts and the runoff feeds the river until late into the summer. Until then, watch the weather forecast. The predictions are calling for a snowy winter this off season, which we know will lead to an awesome rafting season next summer. Practice carving your turns on the slopes today to prepare yourself to run the rapids in May!

Colorado River Rafting
Raft the Colorado River
From the peaks of the Rockies to the depths of Grand Canyon and beyond, the Colorado River is the West’s most iconic river. At more than 1,400 miles in length—passing through seven U.S. States and 11 national parks and monuments—it’s not only the lifeline of the Colorado Plateau, the Colorado River is one of the best whitewater rafting destinations in the world.
Inhabited for centuries by the Navajo, Mojave, Ute, and many other tribes, as well as their native predecessors, the Colorado River Basin provided rich grounds for hunting, fishing, and gathering. The lush riparian areas helped native communities flourish, and the wide flows allowed them to travel up and downstream.
It wasn’t until John Wesley Powell’s harrowing 1869 exploration of a large section of the river that the hidden canyons and raging rapids of the Colorado were put on the map. After that, it didn’t take long for other explorers and early river-running pioneers to follow in Powell’s footsteps.
Today, despite dams and development restraining the free flow of the river in many places, much of the Colorado’s wild and rugged beauty remains and is now protected. Though flows are carefully regulated, Colorado River rafting adventures consistently provide world-class whitewater and the trip of a lifetime.

The guides made this trip so special, worthwhile, and memorable. Having booked the 17-day Grand Canyon trip on only two week's notice, I truly wasn't sure what to expect and decided to come into the adventure with an open mind and "just say yes" attitude. I was shocked to experience the level of hospitality provided 24/7 by the guides. Even more impressive was the guides' passion and expert knowledge of the Grand Canyon's geology, anthropology, and rafting history. OARS Grand Canyon guest 2022

Frequently Asked Questions
Have more questions?
Where is the best Colorado River rafting?
As the Colorado River flows through southeastern Utah and Arizona, it snakes its way through some of the West’s most dramatic canyon country, including Canyonlands National Park and Grand Canyon National Park.
Some of the best Colorado River rafting opportunities are easily accessible from the adventure hubs of Moab, UT, and Flagstaff, AZ, including three of the most stunning and exciting sections of whitewater: Westwater Canyon , Cataract Canyon , and Grand Canyon . On all three of these white water rafting trips, fascinating geology, incredible camping opportunities and incredible hiking opportunities await.
How long are rafting trips on the Colorado River?
Depending on how much time you have, OARS offers a variety of rafting trips on the Colorado River ranging anywhere from 2 to 18 days.
For Westwater Canyon, 2- to 3-day options are the norm, with 3 days providing a more laid-back experience and more exploring. Slightly longer trips ranging from 4 to 6 days are available through Cataract Canyon, where you can enjoy incredible backstage access to Canyonlands National Park .
The longest Colorado River rafting trips available are full Grand Canyon rafting and dory expeditions , which float the entire 280-mile stretch of the Colorado River from Lees Ferry to Pearce Ferry and typically last 14 to 18 days. Partial canyon trips normally range between 6 to 12 days.
Does OARS offer day trips?
OARS doesn’t currently offer 1-day rafting trips on the Colorado River. If you’re short on time, the Moab Daily run or the shorter, 12-mile Westwater Canyon trip, are popular day trips for adventure seekers.
What are the rapids on the Colorado River rated?
Most of the rapids on the Colorado River are rated on the standard scale of I-VI. Everyone from beginners and families to thrill seekers and seasoned river runners can find a Colorado River white water adventure that caters to their experience level.
River ratings and adventure levels on the Colorado vary by section, and even the water level or season. For example, Cataract Canyon trips are generally considered Class III-IV, however at peak flows in the spring, some of the more technical rapids like the Big Drops are as big or bigger than the most formidable rapids in Grand Canyon.
Grand Canyon rapids are rated on a different scale of 1 to 10. Flat water is 1, while tough rapids like Lava Falls or Crystal can be rated 10 at certain water levels. A 10 rating in the canyon is roughly equivalent to a Class V in the standard river scale.
What is the minimum age to raft the Colorado?
OARS offers multi-day river trips on the Colorado that cater to ages 7 and up, depending on the trip and water levels. Refer to trip pages for minimum age requirements for each adventure.
River ratings, other inherent risks of backcountry travel, and even an individual’s adventure threshold and activity level should be considered when deciding if a person is ready for a river trip.
When is the best time to go rafting on the Colorado River?
Guided rafting trips on the Colorado River are generally offered April through October, but conditions can vary greatly depending on when and where you decide to go. The best time to raft the Colorado River really depends on individual preferences, like desired adventure level, boat preference, and other factors, like threshold for extreme weather both hot and cold.
Spring Trips
Trips early in the commercial rafting season offer fun, average flows for rafters, typically during April and early May before the spring melt begins in full force. Wildflowers are blooming, waterfalls are gushing, conditions are ideal for hiking, and there are fewer people on the water. However, paddlers need to be prepared for frigid water and unpredictable weather that can go from warm and sunny to raining, or even snowing, on the same day.
Later in spring, often mid-May through mid-June, snowmelt runoff from the Rocky Mountains adds abundant amounts of water to the river. “High-water trips” on the more free-flowing and untamed stretches of the Colorado River, like Cataract Canyon , during these peak flows are best for thrill seekers and the most adventurous rafters. A raft flip or cold water swim should be anticipated. At the same time, rapids in narrower sections of the Colorado River, like Westwater Canyon, tend to wash out completely during high water. As a result, OARS doesn’t offer Westwater trips during the peak-flow window, since it can be a disappointing experience for paddlers.
Summer/Early-Fall Trips
As Colorado River flows return to normal by late June to early-July most seasons, both Cataract Canyon and Westwater Canyon offer splashy, reliable flows for rafters into the late summer/early fall.
Westwater Canyon rafting trips typically conclude by the end of September, since the water levels can become more challenging for rafts to navigate later in the season, while Cataract Canyon trips are often available into mid-October, depending on the outfitter.
During this time, we’re generally able to offer a wider selection of crafts to try out on calmer stretches of the river, like stand-up paddleboards or inflatable kayaks, and the heat of summer is a welcome invitation to swim in the brisk Colorado. Rafters aren’t immune to unpredictable weather in the summer, though. During monsoon season (July through September), rafters can anticipate frequent afternoon thunderstorms.
Grand Canyon River Trip Considerations
The best time to raft Grand Canyon is a bit of a different scenario. Before the Colorado River flows through Grand Canyon, it hits Lake Powell. As a result, Grand Canyon rafting trips rely on dam-controlled water releases from the upstream reservoir all year long. This means rafters won’t necessarily see drastic changes in water levels during spring snowmelt season, but the big legendary whitewater that Grand Canyon is known for is guaranteed throughout the Colorado River rafting season. Arguably, the months of April and October are considered the best time for Grand Canyon rafting trips, because there are fewer people in the canyon, temperatures are milder, and the conditions are ideal for side hikes and exploring.
Don’t miss our comprehensive guide to Grand Canyon river trips , which is full of expert advice and other factors to keep in mind before choosing the right Grand Canyon rafting or dory trip.
What can I expect on a multi-day river trip?
The beauty of a multi-day rafting adventure is that no two trips are ever the same. What you can expect on a multi-day river trip with OARS, however, is a high standard of customer service, top-notch equipment, delicious meals, and some of the best guides in the industry providing you with a trip of a lifetime. Check out our Multi-day River Trip FAQs for more about what to expect on a river trip.
Why Colorado River rafting with OARS?
OARS has been offering Colorado River rafting trips since 1969 and was selected as the first exclusively oar-powered rafting outfitter authorized to run trips on the Colorado River through Grand Canyon in 1972. Since then, our offerings have expanded to include some of the most iconic stretches of river throughout the West and the world.
With 50-plus years in the river running business, we’ve earned a reputation for maintaining the gold standard for river trips by hiring only the best guides in the industry, using the best equipment, and maintaining the kind of personal service that can only come from a second generation, family-owned and operated business.

Family Rafting FAQs
We recommend reading up on all our trips to get a good sense of the best fit for your family. Big Horn Sheep Canyon is by far our most popular family trip with the Scenic Float coming in a close second for a tamer adventure. The Royal Gorge is designed for families with older teenagers looking for a wet-and-wild adventure.
There is no “best time”, however we would suggest planning based on seasonal weather and flows. Our regular season runs from mid-April through mid-September. The Arkansas River typically reaches its peak sometime between mid-May and early July producing some of the best whitewater in Colorado. May and June tend to have cooler air temperatures and a chance for late afternoon showers. July through early September are the warm and sunny months with somewhat lower water levels.
Of course! We have grab-and-go snacks, drinks, as well as a full restaurant, 8-mile Bar and Grille on site with options for the whole family.
No! Every person on the trip will be issued a U.S. Coast Guard approved Type V Personal Flotation Device, better known as a PFD. They’re designed to float your head above the surface of the water even if you do not know how to swim.
Safety is our top priority for our guests and staff. Having said that, there are inherent risks with river rafting that we cannot always foresee or remove from the activity. To keep you as safe as possible we train our guides more extensively than any other outfitter in the state of Colorado, and we have in place a number of safety protocols to minimize risk wherever possible. We’re looking out for you!
Yes. We offer clean, family friendly changing rooms with bathrooms for before and/or after your rafting adventure.

Life Lessons Learned on Grand Canyon River Trips
The california condor on grand canyon expeditions, it’s march. prepare for your upcoming grand canyon river trip.
What to Bring on a Grand Canyon Whitewater Rafting Trip
B ringing the right gear is arguably the most important part of preparing for any multi-day river trip —and even more so if it’s multi- week . You can save yourself a lot of grief and wasted space by fine-tuning what you really need to bring along and what you're better off leaving at home. I learned this (occasionally the hard way) last fall during 21 days of rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon with seven friends.
The rafting trip was, of course, incredible beyond words. It was also a lesson in thresholds and preparation. Spending three weeks self-supported in any backcountry automatically comes with a level of discomfort, but The Big Ditch is uniquely hard on both gear and your body.
For three weeks, we were sand-logged from start to finish. The sand along this stretch of the Colorado River is so fine and invasive that it's actually more than just an annoyance. It clogs the zippers and seals of every piece of gear. It worms its way into the fibers of every fabric and micro-rubs your skin non-stop. Then there's the weather. The floor of the Grand Canyon is dry, arid, and either scorching hot or bone-chillingly cold depending on the time of year.

So, while having the right layers, the right sleep setup, and the right dry gear is crucial for any rafting trip, your river kit needs to be seriously dialed in to do the Grand.
What I Wish I Didn't Bring Rafting the Grand Canyon
When it comes to gear, the beauty of rafting is that you don’t have to haul your belongings on your back—just row them downriver. That means you can pack more than the bare minimum, while still running the risk of overpacking and/or leaving essentials behind. If you don’t bring the right items to stay dry, cool, and comfortable, those inescapable frustrations—day-in and day-out with 150 more river miles ahead of you—will start to sour those breathtaking views.
Before we get into the do's and don'ts, let's just start off by naming my worst decision: grabbing hiking poles and adding them to my pile of gear. Half a river trip involves trekking and Grand Canyon hiking is notorious for steep climbs with loose rocks—which is why I thought hiking poles would be helpful. But the hikes from the river’s bottom aren’t as developed as those from the top, which meant there was a lot of scrambling over huge boulders.
I brought my hiking poles on the first few hikes only to realize they were more helpful stashed away. Not only did I not need them for hiking after all, but they were a pain to pack on the boat, given they’re too pointy to be stuffed into a dry bag and too long for most dry boxes. So you can nix those from your load-out list right away.
Assuming you already have a list of the usual must-haves for a river trip, like water shoes, sun shirts, and maybe a dry suit depending on what time of year you’re going, here are the best pieces of gear I was very grateful to have—and a couple of rethinks.
What to Pack on a Grand Canyon Rafting Trip
Waterproof, knee-high boots might be the single best item I brought on the trip. Chacos or Tevas are great on the raft during the day, but the more your skin is exposed to the elements, the drier it gets, which becomes painful past a certain point. What’s more, constant abrasion from all that sand once at camp can create small cuts that can lead to bacterial infections like tolio, which runs rampant on the Grand and other multi-week river trips. In short: You need to protect your feet when you can.
From bighorn sheep to great blue herons, wildlife is one of the coolest parts about being down in the canyon. I was surprised to find I was the only person in the group who'd brought binoculars. Soon enough, a favorite pastime as we slowly cruised flatwater or relaxed at camp was zooming in on canyon walls to spot what was quietly hiding in the surrounding cliffs—from abundant canyon wildlife to the odd lone hiker.
Merino is ideal for temperature regulating, as it can hold heat and still be breathable. These properties could not be better-suited to shoulder-season river trips where temperature, sun, and wind conditions are constantly fluctuating as you move through the canyon.
Personal headlamps are crucial, but outdoor lanterns that you can place on a table are such a nice, small luxury to illuminate things while cooking, on dish duty, or just hanging out playing cards. Some people brought solar-rechargeable lanterns, but they didn’t hold their charges long and if we forgot to pull them out to charge on the boats during the day, they weren’t helpful.
Rafting is all about luxury while roughing it. Who wants to sleep with their head on a blow-up camping pillow for 21 days straight? A lot of people bring full-size bed pillows, but they take up a lot of room in your dry bags—and sand gets permanently embedded in them.
One of the best parts of being on the river for weeks at a time is being able to completely disconnect—but you’re still going to want the content. Bringing a GoPro camera meant I could keep my phone off and away but still capture memories. And because it’s waterproof, super durable, and was attached to a floating mount, I also got rad footage of us sending Lava, hitting holes in Sockdolager, and nearly swimming in Crystal.
In this day and age, it’s nearly impossible to go three weeks and not use some kind of electronic that’ll eventually need to be recharged. We kept everything pretty low-tech, but BioLite Charge 80 PD Power Bank was the perfect size to charge up the GoPro every other day (or a smartphone five times, a tablet twice, or a laptop once).
There are two types of dry bags: zippered and roll-top. While both are just as reliable for most rivers, the sand down in the Grand Canyon truly infiltrates everything . When fine sand gets into zippers, it’s like throwing a wrench in a machine. Two of the zippered duffels we brought failed by our second week. Luckily, we had enough space in other roll-top dry bags to tide us over, but save yourself the trouble and opt for all roll tops down here.
Rechargeable headlamps are a great, sustainable option 95 percent of the time, but three weeks away from a power outlet isn’t one of them. Save your portable power bank juice and bring an old-school, AA battery-powered headlamp and a stash of backup batteries.

National Park Service Searching for Missing Man Who May Have Gone Down Colorado River in ‘Self Made Raft’
The man was reported missing after park sheriffs found his car, a 2001 Toyota Tacoma, abandoned at Lee’s Ferry in the Glen Canyon National Recreation area
The National Park Service
A man who may have attempted to navigate the Colorado River alongside his dog in a homemade raft has gone missing, according to National Park authorities.
The National Park Service announced on Wednesday, April 24 that it is “conducting a missing person search” at Grand Canyon National Park to find New Mexico native Thomas Lee Robison, 58.
Park sheriffs located Robison's car, a champagne 2001 Toyota Tacoma, abandoned at Lee’s Ferry in the Glen National Recreation area on Sunday, April 21. A map from KLAS-TV showed that Lee’s Ferry is located along the Colorado River and below Glen Canyon Dam.
The National Park Service said it “believed” that Robison entered the Colorado River and “attempted” to "go down" it with his dog, a Welsh Corgi, on a “self made raft” before he disappeared.
Authorities provided a photo of the self-made raft made out of three wooden planks — in various shades and with etchings — tied together with some multi-colored rope. A paddle and an orange life jacket were also pictured alongside the raft.
They also provided photos of Robison, who sported a gray beard in a pair of photos with his corgi, who had a mixture of light brown and white fur.
Robison is described as having brown hair and hazel eyes, with a height of 5’10 and a weight of 160 lbs. Park authorities also described his dog, who is 11 years old and weighs 25 lbs.
“Anyone who may have seen Thomas Robison are asked to contact Grand Canyon Dispatch at 928-638-7805,” the National Park Service said in a press release. “A missing person investigation is on-going and no further information is available at this time.”
The Colorado River leads down to Lake Mead, and it takes about three days to reach Lake Mead if following the currents along the river, according to KLAS-TV.

The National Service Park outlines several ways people can safely sail down the Colorado River with different experiences on its website and permits are needed for many of them.
One-day commercial river trips for the public to raft down the Colorado River from Glen Canyon Dam to Lees Ferry are provided by Glen Canyon Rafting Hospitality, LLC, according to the National Service Park. Individuals may also purchase a permit for two to five-day noncommercial trips on motorized or nonmotorized rafts that launch from Diamond Creek and end at Lake Mead.

Man, dog disappear in Grand Canyon after apparently taking homemade raft on Colorado River
By Kerry Breen
Updated on: April 25, 2024 / 12:35 PM EDT / CBS News
A man and his dog are missing after apparently taking a homemade wooden raft on the river that runs through the Grand Canyon , the National Park Service said Wednesday.
The man was identified by park officials in a news release as Thomas L. Robinson of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Robinson abandoned his vehicle at Lees Ferry , a fishing and boat launching point in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The site is often used as a launch for for whitewater rafting trips along the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon, according to park officials.
A photo of the raft that it is believed Robinson used to attempt to travel down the river with his small dog shows just a few long planks assembled together, along with a paddle and life vest.
A missing persons investigation is ongoing, the park service said. Anyone with information about Robinson or who may have seen him is asked to contact the Grand Canyon Dispatch Center.
Robinson is described as a 5'10" White man with brown hair and hazel eyes. The dog is a white 11-year-old Welsh Corgi, according to the NPS.
The Colorado River runs nearly 1,500 miles, from the Rocky Mountains to Mexico, according to American Rivers , a site that catalogues information about the nation's waterways. In the Grand Canyon, the river continues to deepen and widen in the national landmark, according to the NPS . Whitewater rafting is common in the river.
Water flowing down the Colorado River from Glen Canyon takes fewer than three days to reach Lake Mead, according to CBS affiliate KLAS-TV.

Not that Colorado: The muddy, winding story of how the Texas' Colorado River got its name
When Katy Moore was 9 years old, she took a rafting trip down the Colorado River. She started outside Las Vegas, though the river itself begins in the state of Colorado and flows through the Grand Canyon all the way down to northwestern Mexico.
Now, 33 years later, Moore lives in Austin. Sitting atop the peak at Mount Bonnell on a recent spring day, she looked down at the river below her, also known as the Colorado, and started wondering about that long-ago rafting trip.
“How is that the Colorado River and this is, too?” Moore asked.
She’s not alone. Countless visitors and new arrivals to Texas have confused the Texas Colorado River with its better-known counterpart west of the Rockies.
“Why is the river that flows through Austin called the Colorado when it starts near Abilene and never touches the state of Colorado?” listener Charles Taylor asked ATXplained .
The answer starts with the meaning of the name, then gets even weirder.
Once upon a time in Texas
To explain the case of the two Colorado Rivers, let’s go back to the late 1600s.
After French colonists arrived in the region now known as Texas, the competing Spanish began expeditions to quickly claim territory. French and Spanish cartographers started naming the rivers here.
In the 1690s, Spanish explorer Alonso de León named a river "El Rio Colorado" (“the Red River”) for its muddy waters, bleeding reddish hues from the clay soil beneath the waves.
Other rivers with the same red water got the same Spanish name.
There are “Rios Colorados” in Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Costa Rica, to name a few. In the U.S., there are many rivers dubbed the “Red River” for similar reasons.
But, the most famous Colorado River, the one that created the Grand Canyon, does not appear to have been named after the color of its contents. It was initially called the “Grand River.” It got a name change in 1921 to honor its state of origin: Colorado.
Colorado was not even recognized until 1876, which means the river in Texas was named not just before the other Colorado River, but before the state of Colorado was even a thing.
And it gets weirder.
'The Arms of God'
It turns out that the Texas river we now call the Colorado River is not the same river de León noticed and named in the late 1600s.
After the Colorado River in Texas was named, colonists soon named another nearby river “Los Brazos de Dios” or “the Arms of God.”
Some think it earned its name because the river —like a blessing from God — provided drinkable water for thirsty settlers. Another theory holds that the Brazos River was named for its many tributaries, or arms, known as brazos .
But, like many explorers back in the day (see: Christopher Columbus), the Spanish and French got confused about what bodies of water they were near.
A 1718 map by a French cartographer shows a river labeled “Rio de San Marcos ou Colorado,” (literally “San Marcos River or Arms of God River”) combining the San Marcos and Colorado rivers situated in the center of present-day Texas.
Historians assume the present-day Brazos was at one point also named “La Maligne” by the French settler René Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, as shown in the 1718 map.
A map from 1727 appears to further the confusion, now showing a combined “Río Colorado o de los brazos de dios,” (“Colorado River or Arms of God River”) placed in northeastern Texas.
At some points the Colorado and Brazos rivers stand just 30 miles apart, which could be the reason for the combination of the names.
It appears that cartographers settled on which river was called what by 1835 . But, by then, the river that had originally been called the “Brazos” was dubbed the “Colorado” and the original “Colorado,” with its muddy red waters, was now called the “Brazos.”
That’s why the Brazos River in Texas is often more muddy and red, or colorado , while the current-day Colorado River often has clearer waters despite its name.
And still, neither of them are near the state of Colorado.
The 'other' river still measures up
While the Colorado River in Texas might be the “other” Colorado, it’s regarded as the “lifeblood” of the state, said Clara Tuma, a spokesperson for the Lower Colorado River Authority .
Tuma said reservoirs like Lake Travis, Lake Buchanan and Lake Austin — collectively known as the "Highland Lakes" — are created by dams along the river in Central Texas.
They provide vital water resources for Texans.
“The Highland Lakes provide water for industries, for residences, for businesses and for agriculture in the lower basin when water is available,” she said. “They serve a myriad of uses and provide water really to our entire region.”
Some of the water is also distributed to other areas outside the Colorado River watershed, like Corpus Christi and Round Rock.
Aside from the water supply it provides, the Colorado River finds itself winning as the longest river within just Texas, coming in at 862 miles long. Altogether, there are more than 7,500 miles in the Colorado River Basin, including the streams, rivers and creeks that feed the river.
The river flows from northwest Texas near Lubbock, down southeast past Austin and into the Gulf of Mexico’s Matagorda Bay.
What’s in a name?
While Tuma doesn’t get asked too often about both rivers, she understands the questions people may have about their names.
“There’s room for some confusion, since there are two rivers with the same name,” she said. “But [the Texas Colorado River] was named the Colorado River first, and the other river is bigger. So, all can live together in harmony.”
Of course, the section of the Colorado River that sits in downtown Austin, its waters held back by the Longhorn Dam, is often called something else completely: “Lady Bird Lake” or “Town Lake,” for traditionalists.
It’s enough to make you wonder if this is the most confusingly named river in Texas.
“They call it a lake but it's really just a river that's dammed,” said Russel Larsen, enjoying the Hike and Bike Trail that runs along the river on a recent spring day.
“I get confused about Lake Austin and Lake Travis,” he added. “Which is which?”
But that’s a question for another day. Copyright 2024 KUT News. To see more, visit KUT News .
