Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s 2013 Golden Globe opening monologue
Jan. 14, 2013
Fey and Poehler have solidified their standing as a dynamite comedy duo while spoofing mom jeans or reporting “Weekend Update” for “Saturday Night Live,” co-starring in comedy romps like “Baby Mama” or “Sisters,” or roasting celebrities such as George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Leonardo DiCaprio as hosts of the Golden Globes.
The comics met in 1993 at Chicago’s ImprovOlympic (now known as iO Chicago). In the early aughts, they became the first and only female co-anchors on “SNL‘s” popular “Weekend Update.” They have co-hosted the Golden Globe Awards four times. Fey even dedicated a chapter of her memoir “Bossypants” to Poehler, titled “I Don’t Care If You Like It (One in a series of love letters to Amy Poehler).”
Tickets for the tour, perhaps in celebration of their 30-year friendship, go on presale beginning Wednesday. General sale begins Friday.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are Golden Globes ratings boosters
Tina Fey and and Amy Poehler are returning to host the 2014 and 2015 Golden Globe Awards, and based on the ratings last time, it’s a good move by NBC, which will broadcast the awards show in January.

Things To Do
Entertainment, entertainment | review: tina fey and amy poehler return to chicago stages after 30 years, and it’s all charm.
NBC/NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler launch their "Restless Leg Tour" this weekend in Rosemont and at the Chicago Theatre.
What do you call what Tina Fey and Amy Poehler did at the Rosemont Theatre Friday night?
Vaudeville? A 100-minute comedy hang? A sweet, loosely organized catch-up between Chicago-bred comics and their audience? A live dual portrait of old friends? Whatever you call it, they’re doing it all weekend, next in three sold-out shows at the Chicago Theatre, and if you couldn’t pull the trigger on the pricey tickets, or simply find a ticket before resell pirates began demanding cretinous, Taylor Swift-ish prices, I hate to say … Sometimes charm, authenticity and a distinct lack of a rigidly-executed show is enough.
Sounds like a backhanded compliment, but I promise: It’s all compliment. Their “Restless Leg Tour,” which is making a tentative tiptoe into a handful of cities this spring, presumably as a test run for grander plans, is a victory lap and reminder of how comfortably Fey and Poehler ping off each other. To the song “For Good” from “Wicked,” Fey sang to Poehler: “I do believe you make me slightly better.” And Poehler sang to Fey: “We are work friends and we see each other at work.” They would have done the actual song, Fey said, but they would have had to pay for rights, negating the point of the tour.
The beauty was in the casualness, the intimacy they somehow achieved through the touches they can’t control: Poehler’s openhearted cackle; Fey’s dyspeptic side-eye. Poehler did a terrible impression of Richard Dreyfuss in “Jaws” and gave a shoutout to Gen-X (“We remember people!”). Fey, wearing a T-shirt reading “Mother,” said being a mother was like being the guy controlling Kermit the Frog: “If you’re doing your job right, nobody should notice and you’re just a filthy hippy sitting on a dirt floor.” They referred to each other as basically colleagues. “Common law comedy wives.” “Work husbands.” They relayed this so often you know there’s a truth there and a bond that transcends it.
Whatever poignancy they generate, it lands doubly here.
They don’t know exactly when they met, but they know it was about 30 years ago in Chicago. After opening the Rosemont show in knockoff Golden Globe glitter dresses, they climbed into ’90s wigs and clothes and danced through a recounting of their Chicago years: Before a backdrop of the Buckingham Fountain, they talked about both taking Second City classes, both performing with the then-Improv Olympic and both working miserable jobs on the side. Fey, who lived in Rogers Park, worked at the front desk at the YMCA in Evanston, dodging the harassment of its residents. Poehler, who waitressed in scores of restaurants, also worked the phones for Steppenwolf, soliciting donors to donate more.
Since they couldn’t recall their first meeting, they used improv to recreate it. They asked the audience for prompts, and took them. “You had brown hair and I had blond hair,” Poehler said, “and we all know that’s the only way women can be friends.”
Again, I have to ask, what should you call all this?
Both did stand-up — and as jarring as it is to see them slipping into the familiar rhythms of the seasoned road comic (Fey used her set to mock the format), they also sort of killed. In their gowns, they slipped into award-show mockery. Fey: “Ben Affleck is not here tonight. He’s busy slamming car doors behind J Lo.” Poehler: “Chicago, home of Central Standard Time.” They rolled out on office chairs from opposite ends of the stage and, to a roaring audience, did a new “Weekend Update” segment, with guest star. (I won’t spoil the surprise, but it’s good.) At the end, in pajamas, curled into large chairs, they wound down the night with reminiscing and fielded questions from the audience.
If we have to give a name to this, call it Live Charm.
They took the idea for the tour, they’ve told talk shows, from Steve Martin and Martin Short, who have paraded their friendship in a similar show for years. (Indeed, Martin and Martin return to the Chicago Theatre in June.) It’s not a new idea. Hugh Jackman’s arena shows, which play like pleasant old-school showbiz reviews, deliver a bit of comedy, song, dancing, storytelling. But the genre only works when the performer is genuine, self-deflating and, most importantly, their fame is incidental. They were you once, in an audience, and they show delight in your delight.
As Poehler said, way back when, she froze on her bike riding through another Chicago winter, but “it was a magical time when you could make up a show on the spot — a tradition we continue to this day!”

The Restless Leg Tour will be the first time the two Saturday Night Live legends have appeared together on stage since they last hosted the Golden Globes together back in Feb. 2021. That ceremony marked the fourth time they had MC’d the now-embattled awards show following a three-year stint in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Most recently, Poehler popped back into SNL late last month to support her former Parks and Rec co-star Aubrey Plaza for the one-time NBC page’s hosting debut. Fey’s latest projects include Only Murders in the Building , Girls5eva and the upcoming Netflix series Mulligan .

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey aren’t leaving the road quite yet. The beloved Hollywood duo, who kicked off their first-ever live comedy tour together last spring, has announced they will continue their “Restless Leg Tour,” with a lineup of dates in major cities such as Austin and Las Vegas.
Produced by Live Nation, the surprise second leg of the “Restless Leg Tour” begins in Cleveland on Sept. 21 at State Theatre at Playhouse Square before going onto Denver’s Bellco Theatre on Oct. 1, Austin’s Bass Concert Hall on Oct. 12 and Las Vegas’s Resorts World Theatre before concluding in Philadelphia at The Met Dec. 14.

“If this tour goes right, we can finally end this friendship,” Poehler and Fey said in a joint statement.
Poehler and Fey met in the Chicago improv scene in the 1990s before getting hired on “Saturday Night Live,” eventually becoming the first female co-anchors of “Weekend Update.” In addition to headlining their own long-running TV sitcoms — Poehler’s “Parks and Recreation” and Fey’s “30 Rock” — the dynamic duo has shared the screen in the comedies “Mean Girls,” “Baby Mama” and “Sisters.”
Poehler and Fey have hosted the Golden Globes together four times, where their wry observations of Hollywood A-listers — from Leonardo DiCaprio’s penchant for dating younger women to lifetime achievement award recipient George Clooney living in the shadow of his ultra-successful wife, Amal — were ratings and critical hits.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler celebrate friendship, revisit 'Weekend Update' on Restless Leg tour
WASHINGTON – From Steve Martin and Martin Short to Cheech and Chong to Waldorf and Statler, famed comedy duos lean on at least a little bit of shtick.
They’re also predominantly male.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler – Emmys winners, authors, actors and, above all, comedians – are a joint unicorn. Friends for 30 years, partners in film (“Mean Girls,” “Sisters” ) and TV ( “Saturday Night Live” ), theirs is a relationship built on shared scrappiness that led both to significant success.
They’re also very funny sans the shtick. Sort of a Gen-X Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda – two cool women whose banter ping-pongs naturally and who can read each other from a mile away.
On Friday, the spitfire duo kicked off their Restless Leg tour at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. Tickets for their outings – their first live comedy shows together – sold out so quickly that what was initially a handful of dates expanded to a 12-show run scattered between April and June.
To maneuver their collective history through a 100-minute performance might seem daunting. But these two pros brought fans on a fulfilling journey that included video montages of their greatest hits (Mom Jeans! Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin impersonations! “30 Rock”! “Parks & Recreation”!); a few costume changes instituted for purpose, not vanity; improv; stand-up; and, most rewarding, a Q&A session staged on two sofa chairs with Fey and Poehler in their pajamas.
Actually, the most satisfying moment was their closing song – yes, they sing, charmingly – with new lyrics set to “For Good,” the tender ode to friendship from Broadway’s “Wicked” (“Knowing you has made me slightly better ... we are work friends and we see each other ... at work”).
What will make this tour so enjoyable – especially for those able to catch more than one show – is its malleability.
An opening segment with the pair in glittery gowns as a self-effacing nod to their four-time stint as Golden Globes hosts includes a slot for local-market jokes (“I haven’t been to Washington since Jan. 6 … 1988. It was a school trip,” Fey mused).
A quick change into throwback clothes and wigs to showcase how the duo met in the ’90s becomes funnier when Fey, 52, and Poehler, 51, disclose that they can’t specifically recall when they became friends, other than while performing with Second City in Chicago.
And thus, a reenactment is born via improv (Philadelphia, barber shop, a sex toy, the Mafia and rom-coms factored in the scenario on this night) until Poehler summarizes their burgeoning friendship: “You had brown hair and I had blond hair, and we all know that’s the only way women can be friends.”
The sold-out crowd whooped when a functional “Weekend Update” set was erected on stage. Fey, wearing her trademark glasses, and Poehler scooted in their desk chairs from opposite sides of the stage to tackle headlines in their matching dark blazers. (The pair hosted the “Saturday Night Live” segment from 2004 to 2005.)
Stories about King Charles, rules changes in MLB, Twitter blue checks and the upcoming “Barbie” movie were skewered with scalpel-like precision.
But the humorous instincts of the pair were most noticeable in the little things. When Fey accidentally stepped on a Poehler joke, the latter retorted in a millisecond, “Just like old times.” And when Poehler broke character and unsuccessfully stifled her laughter with a “downer” of a guest during the “Weekend Update” segment, Fey wordlessly spun her chair backward to leave her friend to struggle through her own recovery – and likely hide her own giggles.
The Q&A portion of the show – with the women reading preapproved questions – will probably feature different questions at each date to keep the repartee fresh. But one of the more telling exchanges came when they were asked which member of the Golden Girls they identified with the most.
Poehler chose Rose Nyland (Betty White) because “She tells long stories that don’t go anywhere.” Fey picked Dorothy Zbornak: “I’m Bea Arthur energy all the way,” she quipped.
Appropriately, another duo worth celebrating.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler prefer to keep the specifics of their current tour under wraps for the folks who’ve yet to see their 100-minute stage show. And, considering they’ve only played a handful of dates, that group still includes just about everyone.

“When you think about the ways people could be spending their money right now, it’s gratifying and heartwarming that people are like, ‘Yes, that’s the night out that we want,'” said Fey, during a recent conversation with Poehler and THR . “Because, for me, I don’t want to go to anything. I never want to go out.”
“To even get people into a car feels like a win,” added Poehler.
Ahead of their next batch of shows, the pair also talked about getting Lorne Michaels’ blessing to replicate the “Weekend Update” set on tour, finally having the chance to refine material over a long period of time and why the current Writers Guild of America strike feels different than the last one.
There’s no Los Angeles or New York in this latest batch of dates. Are you forcing me to go to Vegas to see the show?
Tina Fey I would never force anyone to go to Vegas, but I might force you to go to Austin.
Amy Poehler I do think we’re going to do New York and Los Angeles later, probably for a longer run. We just have to figure that out.
How are you approaching pacing these dates?
Fey We definitely work backwards, from school calendar first and foremost.
You just played Atlantic City. How does that crowd compare to, say, Chicago?
Poehler Atlantic City is its own country.
Fey There’s not that much of a difference, but we are learning that some cities really like hearing jokes about themselves. Amy says that Boston loves hearing jokes about Boston.
Poehler Yeah, if you’re in Boston, every time you mention the word “Boston” — or any town near Boston — you’re golden. Whereas, Atlantic City wasn’t so much like “This your hometown!” It was, “You’ve driven to this casino!” But we did get a lot of Delco vibes in Atlantic City, which does make me excited for when we get to Philadelphia.
Fey I’m a Jersey Shore-goer since childhood, so I dragged everyone down to stay in Cape May. We’re really trying to find ways to make the most of what is secretly just a ladies weekend every time we’re getting away.
Have any of your kids seen the show yet?
Fey No, they don’t want to see that. If your mom did a show with her friend, where they were just talking to one another for an hour, would you go to that?
Poehler And, on behalf of all women, isn’t there one damn thing we can do where we don’t have to bring our kids? ( Laughs .) None of these guys bring their kids, that’s for sure.
Without spoiling anything, the “Weekend Update” desk makes an appearance during the show. Did you have to ask Lorne Michaels or NBC for permission?
Poehler If you say the words “thank you in advance” for almost anything, it confuses people. Say you’re trying to buy something … “I’m gonna take this for free, thank you in advance.” The person goes, “You’re welcome?” and then you have enough time to get out of the store.
Fey And we got out of the store.
What have you learned about the audience you’re pulling so far?
Poehler Tina and I have done so many shows over the years where people haven’t necessarily paid to come see us . We just happened to be there. So, when people spend the time and money to come see you specifically , you’re like, “Oh, now I understand why Bono never gets off the road.” We’ve been doing a section where we answer questions that people ask on their way in, and we’ve learned a lot about our audience and what they’re thinking. They’re really funny, too. During the tour, Tina and I have also partied really hard during the day and gone to Bloomingdale’s or Macy’s. We keep seeing people who came to the show the night before or who are going that night. So, I guess we’re all doing the same stuff.
Fey We’re all googling “best croissant in Washington” and taking a walk.
How do you approach editing and evolving the material with so much space between dates?
Poehler I feel proud that if you come to a show more than once, you are going to see a different show the second time. We’re always working on new material. We want to make sure that people feel like the show’s for them. But there are some things that have been working really well, that we keep coming back to, and it’s fun to keep tweaking to see if we can make it better and better.
Fey That’s kind of a luxury, too. With SNL , you get a couple swings at something to make it better. Then it airs, and it’s done. To be able to continue to revisit things in this way, we really enjoy the science of it. Also, after so many years of making single-camera television and movies, hoping someone alone in their house laughs at it, it’s fun to be in the room where they’re laughing.
Both of you started performing onstage, though these rooms are much bigger.
Poehler We both started on the stage, and that’s where we’ll both … go at the end. ( Laughs .) But we had so many early days that were just brutal. Zero laughs.
Fey We really did do gigs that were, like, improvising for people at a business conference in a hotel ballroom before they even got breakfast — just forcing people to look at you. This is the opposite of that.
I wonder if this writers strike is getting as much mainstream media attention as the last one. Caring as much about the WGA as I believe you both do, is that something you’re talking about on the road?
Poehler I know a lot of triple-hyphenates — SAG, WGA, DGA — are talking more, which is exciting to see in terms of strength in numbers and solidarity. So I feel, anecdotally, people that aren’t in the business are more aware of it than they were last time. I think that’s simply because the AI issue extends past our business. It’s this general concern about “Where will jobs go?” and “How can corporations be doing so well, and yet the wages of writers continue to go down?” The pure labor movement part does feel like a shared knowledge or experience that’s different than 2007-2008. I don’t know if you would agree, Tina.
Fey Yeah, I think you said it well.
I’m going to let you go, and I realize you’re really spacing this tour out, but I think a lot of people would watch a tour bus doc if you ever choose to go that route.
Poehler I would love to do a Partridge Family-style bus. Or Wavy Gravy’s. All the references nobody remembers! But I do get very car sick, and Tina doesn’t love to drive.
Fey Amy makes me drive.

Why you need to see Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s ‘Restless Leg tour’ coming to Cleveland’s Playhouse Square
C LEVELAND, Ohio – If you saw the “Barbie” movie, Beyonce, Taylor Swift or “SIX the Musical” this summer, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in Cleveland should be on your calendar. This is the “Eras Tour” for theater geeks, soccer moms and anyone looking for a night out filled with laughs.
I saw the comedy duo the way they were intended to be seen: live on a Saturday night. I will also be in the audience when their “Restless Leg” tour opens at Playhouse Square’s State Theatre on Sept. 21 for a three-day run.
And for me, a 26-year-old who used to dream of hosting “Saturday Night Live’s” Weekend Update, seeing my idols on stage in Chicago in May felt like therapy.
Watching “Saturday Night Live” as an overweight, nerdy middle school girl growing up on the South Side of Cleveland set something on fire inside of me. I saw something in Tina Fey and Amy Poehler that I had never seen before; women being weird, loud, clever and having fun while being loved for it, for the most part.
They’ve had their fair share of critics. But what successful woman hasn’t?
They led me down a long path lined with other women to look up to: Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Kristen Wiig, Gilda Radner, Carol Burnett, Laraine Newman and more.
It’s no surprise that the Fey/Poehler show is just as witty and ridiculous as some of their most famous impressions, characters and sketches they wrote. They don’t advertise their Mom Jeans or the Woomba. And “Sarah Palin” and “Hilary Clinton” did not address the audience. Instead, the award-winning actresses captivated the crowd with an easy-going show that tries to explain how they became friends.
Each night of their tour, a different celebrity guest has made an appearance during their “Weekend Update” segment. In Chicago, Fred Armisen wheeled out in an office chair and gave the audience a rundown on different accents you hear throughout the city.
Each actress gave a concise stand-up set that had people in the row next to me literally slapping their knees. Poehler poked fun at her times waiting tables while waiting to make it big. Fey joked about the price of menstrual products, yelling “P****” expensive, y’all!” to the rafters of the Chicago Theater.
There were costume changes, music, dancing, a Q&A section and, of course, improv.
If you didn’t know, Fey and Poehler got their start in Chicago while performing at the Improv Olympic, now the iO Theater, and Second City. The duo are not sure when they officially met but they were sure it was during an improv class.
When I was in high school, my parents surprised me with tickets to a Second City show while in town visiting colleges. I wore a blazer, because that’s what Tina Fey and Amy Poehler wore while hosting “Weekend Update,” and had the time of my life imagining my heroes strolling up the steps to enter the theater.
When I moved to the city for college, I started taking improv classes one week after moving into my dorm. There, I found other women from different backgrounds who wanted the same thing as me; friends and a fun creative outlet.
And although I didn’t end up at 30 Rock, I wouldn’t be a writer without seeing Tina Fey and Amy Poehler do it first.
The “Restless Leg” tour isn’t just a comedy show. Fey and Poehler’s tour is an inclusive, vaudeville-style celebration of friendship and empowerment.
Tina Fey & Amy Poehler perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, and 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, and 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at Playhouse Square’s KeyBank State Theatre. The show’s are sold out but a limited number of VIP tickets are available for $436.50 via playhousesquare.com.
Tickets are also available on the secondary market on various ticket-selling sites.
