Stop 2: Exploring Downtown

The downtown area is your next stop. After checking into your hotel or Airbnb head to one of the oldest streets in Iceland, Laugavegur Street.  For a bite to eat at the numerous restaurants and bars. Or stroll along and visit the shop and boutiques. You can even start your Reykjavik city tour itinerary here and save the Blue Lagoon for evening time.

Be on the lookout for street art as it is all over the city, and a great free way to learn about the culture. Next, head to the park and square to have a picnic or just watch people. You can visit the Reykjavik Cathedral or the Parliament as you spend a leisurely day exploring downtown Iceland on foot.

Better yet take a tour that explains the history and take the guesswork out of what to do! Tours range from free ( please tip!) to more specialized food or history tours. A great option for those visiting Reykjavik in one day for the first time.

Book Here : Reykjavik: Sightseeing Walking Tour with a Viking

Stop 3: Hallgrímskirkja

Is one of the most famous sites in Reykjavik as it is the tallest church in Iceland. Best known for its pipe organ, which is almost 50 feet high the church took over 40 years to build. A statue of Leif Erickson is also on the property. The church is free to visit but please know it has regular religious services.

Every visitor needs a view of the entire city on your Reykjavik Itinerary! Make sure to head to the observation deck for that view. The admission for the observation deck is under $10- and an elevator that takes you to the top.

The Church with a great view is a must on your Reykjavik itinerary with views of mount Etna and the downtown area from the top of the tower

Stop 4: Museums

There are several museums to choose from if looking for things to do in Reykjavik depending on age and interests for your Reykjavik Itinerary.

A visit to the National Museum will give visitors the history of Iceland from the Viking exploration to modern-day history. Explore artifacts, exhibits, artwork, and more. Open daily 10 am to 5 pm and costs $20 to enter for adults and is free for those under 18!

If looking for something a little more interesting on your Reykjavik city tour itinerary why not visit the Icelandic Phallological Museum (Penis Museum)! Here you will see over 200 phallic specimens from mammals in Iceland. Admission is $20 to enter.

The penis museums is one of the interesting things to do in Reykjavik

Stop 5: Harpa Concert Hall

Next stroll along the harbor, we recommend this stop as part of your evening stroll. You will reach Harpa Concert Hall, an architecturally stunning multicolored glass building that lights up nightly.

Opened in 2011 the Icelandic opera is performed here as well as various other shows and events. Visitors who can’t catch an event will still be awarded with vistas of the mountains and the water.

The harp concert hall is a multicolored class building with reflections on the water

Stop 6: Sun Voyager

Finish your night by walking along the water until you reach Sun Voyager. As you walk along the ocean towards the beach you will find the Sculptures walk.

The Sun Voyager is a steel sculpture that is reminiscent of a Viking ship and the Viking heritage in Iceland. Made by Icelandic sculptor Jon Gunnar Arnason. The backdrop of the sculpture is against Mt. Esja, did those visiting during summer it is perfect for a late evening stroll with plenty of daylight.

With 2 days in Reykjavik

For those looking to build an Itinerary for 2 days in Reykjavik, we have you covered, with another full day of exploring Iceland. You will complete all of the day one itinerary and use day two as an add-on list of things to do. This is perfect for those spending a weekend in Reykjavik and want to explore outside of the downtown area.  From a spa visit, National Park, whale watching, and Northern lights you are sure to see it all!

Stop 1: New Sky Lagoon

After spending all of yesterday exploring downtown Reykjavik, what better way to reset than a visit to another geothermal spa. Located just 15 minutes from the city center, New Sky Lagoon opened in 2021 and became the go-to for rest and relaxation.

Visits start at $50, but we suggest splurging for the 7-step ritual! Start with the relaxing geothermal lagoon, followed by glacier cold pool, saunas, cold mist, scrub, steam, and end with a shower.

After being thoroughly relaxed, you can enjoy a bit to eat in the cafe or head to the next stop.

The beautiful geothermal pool at Sky Lagoon

Stop 2: Thingvellir National Park

Thingvellir National park is a must for those wanting to explore more than downtown Reykjavik in 2 days! It is just a 45-minute drive from downtown and is a very popular destination for those looking to experience the natural beauty of Iceland.

For those who did not rent a car, there are plenty of tours you can book to visit here. It is worth noting that the National Park is free to visit but there is a small parking fee.

Stop in the visitors center to learn about the National Park , at this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Warm-up with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and snack, shop for souvenirs, and grab a map of the park! It is also one of the  Game Of Thrones Filming Locations !

Now it is time to explore the National Park. We think one of the coolest things to do in Thingvellir National Park is to walk between the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasian that meet here! Snap a photo of yourself straddling the divide. Or for the adventurous traveler and scuba certified you can snorkel or scuba diving the Silfra Fissure .

Finally, visit the first waterfall on our Rekjavik itinerary! The Oxarafoss waterfall is really easy to get to from one of the car parks in the park. It is an easy 10-minute walk.  An added bonus is the Thingvellir Church. Not only one of the prettiest churches in Iceland but also one of the oldest.

A girl straddling the tetonic plates for Europe and Asia at the Thingveiller National Park

Stop 3: Whale Watching Tour

For those looking to stay in town and looking for what to do in Reykjavik take a Whale watching tour from the harbor. The whale watching season in Iceland spans from May-September, with June, July, and August being the peak months.

From the harbor, your will board a boat for your 3-hour tour on the Atlantic Ocean. Guests will be on the lookout for whales, dolphins, and porpoises.

The tour operator guarantees, if you don’t see a whale, you will be booked on the next trip for free! We have put together a complete guide with all our tips for whale watching in Iceland!

Stop 4: Northern Lights

Every traveler dreams of seeing the Northern Lights on their trip to Iceland! We had to put this as the last stop on your Reykjavik Itinerary!! One of the best ways to see the northern lights is on a tour. But, if that is not in the budget, not to worry we have put together a guide of where to see the Northern Lights near Reykjavik!

We have chosen two options for those looking for tours to take the guesswork out of finding the lights. The first is aboard a luxury yacht from Reykjavik’s Old Harbor . Over 2 hours you will sail along with the small islands in Faxafloi Bay and along the coast away from the lights of Reykjavik.

The second option is a Northern Lights Bus tour . This four-hour tour departs at 8:30 or 9:30 pm depending on the season. The tour guide will give you fascinating facts along the drive away from the city lights, as you chase down the Northern Lights during the winter months. The guesswork is taken out of finding the best spot to get a stunning view of the sky! This tour includes a complimentary ticket to visit the Northern Lights museum in Reykjavik.

Stop 1: Golden Circle

For those who rented a car, we have but together a guide with all the tips for exploring the Golden Circle. Best restaurants for your Reykjavik itinerary

There is no shortage of amazing places to eat in Reykjavik to eat. It is worth noting the capital city is more expensive than you will find once you explore the Ring Road or Golden Circle Route. We have curated a list of the best places for breakfast , and great restaurants you must try on your Reykjavik Itinerary.

Noodle Station

One of our favorites is Noodle Station! The restaurant (while not cheap) is on the inexpensive side as far as Iceland goes.

Noddle Station is frequented by locals and visitors alike who all seek out the delicious chicken, beef, or vegetable noodle soup. Mixed into the broth are secret ingredients that come straight from a family recipe passed down from the owner’s grandmother.

You can expect noodle soup full of delightful flavors, and you’ll wish the ingredients weren’t such a well-guarded secret. With solid portion sizes and quick service, Noodle Station is the perfect stop to thaw out and warm up before continuing to explore the stops on your Reykjavik itinerary.

Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur

You may think, why go to Iceland to eat hot dogs at an unassuming hot dog stand? The answer is that Bæjarins Betztu Pylsur serves uniquely Icelandic hot dogs and has become almost as much a tourist attraction as it is a destination for excellent Reykjavik street food. Plus, it is one of the most inexpensive places you will eat.

The little red stand has been serving up hot dogs near the Reykjavik harbor since 1937. Delighting many a local with its lamb hot dogs topped with fried onions, raw onions, ketchup, Icelandic sweet mustard, and remoulade.

Visit the one at Tryggvagata 1 in downtown Reykjavik.

Sea Baron (or Sægreifinn) is located on Reykjavik’s harbor. If you’re looking for fresh, Icelandic seafood done right, this is one of the best places to eat!

Known for their famous, mouthwatering lobster soup, Sea Baron also offers delicious fish skewers featuring all kinds of fresh fish grilled on a spear. The bonus is the delicious restaurant won’t break the bank!

Pair your meal with a beer or a free cup of coffee and you’ll have all the fuel you need to keep exploring this beautiful country.

Reykjavik Fish

The best fish and chips in Reykjavik is served at Reykjavik Fish. After a busy first day of exploring, the large portions of delicious battered cod paired with one of five different sauces will hit the spot. Cod is the only option for the fish and chips, but it’s unbelievably fresh and distinctly Icelandic!

Also served are other traditional Icelandic dishes such as arctic char, Icelandic plokkari (gratinated fish and potatoes), and fish soup. Finish your meal with a taste of one of the local beers in Iceland.

Overall a great journey with a fantastic guide and wonderful experienced travelers. Stefan our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable about Iceland’s history and natural resources. He masterfully and safety manuvered our bus through icy mountain roads and muddy trails to reach our daily objectives. Our accomodations were adequate and comfortable with complimentary breakfasts in the morning. Our guide made frequent rest stops and ensured our meal requirements were met with several options. He gave us sufficient time to explore each attraction after his explanation of their significance. He made a smooth transition to our accomodations each evening and assisted with luggage. Great communications and coordination between Tourradar/Intrepid Tours and the traveler. I will definately book another tour with you in the future!

My husband and I were on our honeymoon on this trip, and we had an absolutely amazing time! TourRadar did a great job with communicating prior to our trip and answering any questions we had prior to our trip. We were also able to communicate with the tour company via the platform, which was very helpful. We got to visit so many amazing sites all around Iceland and made some amazing memories. The itinerary was well-developed and also allowed for some downtime. Our tour guide, Siggie, from Arctic Adventures also did an incredible job keeping us informed and making sure we had everything we needed. We were able to learn a lot and felt very welcomed.

8 Day - Iceland Ring Road Tour

Artic Adventures 8  Day Ring Rd Tour Artic Adventures offered a well rounded 6 day tour of the Island.Central office provided excellent email communications and corrected errors on dates of lodging quickly when brought to their attention. Van for travel was clean, comfortable, ample room under seats and above bins for rental equipment and personal items for the 15 in our group.Charging port, phone holder with pull down tray included in the newer van.Luggage was placed in Uhaul trailer the van pulled behind, tour guide always put the luggage in and out .Our Tour Guide/ Van driver Almar  "Al" had a love for his country that just shined! Our guided tour with crampons at a Glacier was guided by Michael. He was very personable, explained and assisted when needed. He took our tour at the pace we could handle learning a new skill.Whale watching was a tour of a few groups on the ship.Top deck provided a view for about 12 people and the rest of 25 or so had to often miss the show as the boat was often head on instead of turning to allow those on main deck a good view. Back on the van,Al had an enormous amount of information on all the parks, history of landmarks, and a never ending wealth of patience to our countless questions! Everyday he provided the itinerary ,housing for the evening and information on where we could eat during the mid day and evening.Frequent stops every hour or aso were provided for bathroom breaks and drinks.Al encouraged us to switch seats every day to allow a different view for all.He helped us to discover the Northern Lights and invited us out to view them, every night. Al united our diverse group and we are still communicating with each other. The tour had many adventures, an Icelandic Horse Farm visit, an extra fee for Thermal pool swim as well as a beautiful daily waterfall, parks, beaches, hot springs, iceberg coves, seals, and old Volcanic sites.Would highly recommended this tour.

The guide Romeo was friendly. He prepared hot chocolate and fire in cold weather. The places he chosen for seeing the northern lights are perfect. It is important to wear warm clothes and gloves because your feet and hands will be freezing outdoors at cold night !

This day tour was a great way to see the famous Snaefellsnes Peninsula if you only have a limited amount of time. Keep in mind that the peninsula is relatively large so in order to hit all of the stops, you will likely be limited as to how long you can stay in each place. We averaged 10-20 minutes at each stop. I personally would have preferred skipping some stops to spend more time at others so might have benefited from a self-drive tour but still giving this a 5 Star as we made it to all locations, the guide was friendly and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend Tröll tours whenever possible during your trip as both of their tours that I took were exceptional and have me counting down the days to my next trip to Iceland!

Best Day Trips from Reykjavik

Reykjavik, Iceland's vibrant capital, serves as the perfect launching point for exploring the country's stunning natural beauty. Numerous day trips are available from Reykjavik , offering a wide range of unique experiences.

The Golden Circle is perhaps the most famous, encompassing the Geysir geothermal area , the iconic Gullfoss waterfall , and the historical Thingvellir National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just an hour's drive from Reykjavik, it provides a taste of Iceland's geological wonders.

For those seeking a more immersive adventure, a trip to the South Coast unveils the striking Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls , along with the eerie beauty of the black sand beach at Reynisfjara and the charming village of Vik .

Another option is the enchanting Snaefellsnes Peninsula , featuring the Snaefellsjokull glacier and a rugged coastline, often referred to as "Iceland in Miniature."

Animal lovers will appreciate a whale-watching tour departing from Reykjavik's harbor, where you can spot majestic humpback whales and playful dolphins in their natural habitat.

In winter, the chance to witness the elusive northern lights, a celestial spectacle, is a must-consider excursion.

In Reykjavik itself, you can immerse yourself in Icelandic culture by visiting the iconic Hallgrimskirkja church , exploring the vibrant streets of Laugavegur for shopping and dining, or delving into the nation's history at the National Museum of Iceland.

Don't forget to sample Icelandic cuisine at local restaurants, where you can savor delicacies like fermented shark, Icelandic lamb, and skyr, a traditional yogurt-like treat.

Why Go To Reykjavik

First, let's get a few things out on the table. Yes, Reykjavik is in Iceland, which is, in fact, an icy island about half the year. And, yes, Iceland was the culprit in 2010's volcanic eruption fiasco. But, what you might not know is that in the cold, long winter, Icelanders warm up in this capital's geothermal spas; and away from the city lights , they can drink in the beauty of the aurora borealis . In the summer, the weather is divine and the days are long – some days see 20 hours of sunlight. And volcanoes, like the notorious Eyjafjallajökull, are just one part of Iceland's dramatic and ethereal landscape. There are also gushing waterfalls , awe-inspiring geysers, expansive glaciers and wide open spaces filled with Icelandic horses and sheep. Plus, Reykjavik boasts a raging nightlife scene and a collection of interesting museums and local shops.

Iceland's capital and largest city is a prime home base for exploring many of the country's most treasured natural wonders, such as the Golden Circle . If you don't want to plan your own itinerary, consider signing up for one of the best Iceland tours , which are led by knowledgeable locals who take care of all the planning and logistics for you.

Reykjavik Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Reykjavik is from June to August. Not only can you enjoy the balmy temps (for Iceland, at least), but you'll also experience long days (think: up to 21 hours of sunlight – a phenomenon dubbed "midnight sun"). If you're looking to save some Icelandic króna, you'll be able to do so in the winter; but those who wrestle with seasonal affective disorder might reconsider: the sun only peeks out for four or five hours between December and February.

Weather in Reykjavik

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

Iceland is small Comparable to the size of Kentucky, Iceland is only about 40,000 square miles. On a longer trip, it’s entirely possible to see some of the highlights of the whole country, including the Blue Lagoon, the Golden Circle , South Iceland  and, from September to mid-April, the  aurora borealis .

Weekdays are the best days for shopping  Unless you plan on bargain-hunting at the Kolaportid Flea Market on weekends, shop along downtown thoroughfares like Laugavegur on weekdays when stores generally offer extended opening hours.

Icelanders love to party  Knighted "the nightlife capital of the north," Reykjavik will please visitors who come looking for a party.

Arrive early for flights  Keflavik International Airport is undergoing expansion projects to accommodate more passengers, but in the meantime, expect long check-in lines and crowded gate areas. The airport recommends arriving at least two-and-a-half hours before scheduled departure times.

How to Save Money in Reykjavik

Avoid eating at restaurants for every meal  Sitting down for multiple meals daily can quickly add up. To keep your food costs low, grab a pylsur  (or hot dog) from one of downtown's carts or buy grab-and-go pastries, sandwiches and snacks from a local grocery store.

Choose your spa experience wisely Blue Lagoon offers an amazing experience, but a much more cost-effective alternative is to soak in one of Reykjavik's local geothermal pools or hot pots.

Purchase a Reykjavík City Card  Each Reykjavík City Card  costs 1,500 to 3,300 Icelandic króna (or $14.50 to $32) and includes 24, 48 or 72 hours of complimentary access to the National Museum of Iceland and city museums like The Settlement Exhibition and the Árbaer Open Air Museum , plus unlimited rides on the city's Straetó buses.

Culture & Customs

Although Iceland is relatively young (it has only been a country since 1944, when it gained independence from Denmark), the country boasts one of the world's most celebrated cultures. Settled by Scandinavian immigrants (known as Vikings) and British slaves between the ninth and 10th centuries, Iceland continues to celebrate its Viking customs and traditions through the retelling of folktales about elves and trolls.

Because of its isolated location, Icelandic – Iceland's official language – has hardly changed since the country was settled. But when American troops were stationed in Iceland during the latter part of World War II, many Icelanders taught themselves English by watching the military base's TV channel. As a result, most Icelanders today speak Icelandic and English. Icelandic, therefore, is not necessary to use when visiting, but if you'd like to try speaking the language, here are a few key words and phrases to remember: "halló" (hello), "skál" (cheers), "takk" (thank you) and "bless á medan" (goodbye).

Popular pastimes in Iceland include reading books and listening to music. Icelandic authors publish more books (per capita) than authors from any other country in the world, and Iceland has a vibrant music scene. It is hardly surprising, then, that the country that's home to international sensations like Björk, Sigur Rós and Of Monsters and Men also hosts a variety of music festivals every year. Additionally, Iceland's nightlife scene is highly regarded. For the most action, plan on going out around 1 a.m. on Saturday or Sunday.

When eating at one of Reykjavik's restaurants, you'll notice some dining customs are a bit different. Waitstaff in Iceland, like other parts of Europe, are generally paid more than servers in the U.S., so tipping is not required. What's more, it is customary to get up and pay for your meal at a register (rather than asking for the check). And keep in mind that the Icelandic króna, which equals about one American penny, is the official currency here. Since the króna to U.S. dollar exchange rate fluctuates, be sure to  check what the current exchange rate is  before you go.

What to Eat

As questionable as Icelandic delicacies like putrefied shark, pickled ram's testicles, sheep's head, minke whale and puffin sound, you can always trust that New Nordic cuisine will be prepared with fresh and rich ingredients. Local seafood, in particular, is a mainstay in Icelandic fare – fitting of a city surrounded by arctic waters. The city is also known for skyr (a yogurt-like dairy product offered in a variety of flavors), h angikjöt (smoked lamb) and pylsur  (hot dogs that are deepened in flavor by lamb meat). And no visit to Reykjavik would be complete without trying Íslensk kjötsúpa  (a traditional lamb soup that varies by restaurant, much like a  mole  sauce in Mexican cuisine or a  marinara  sauce in Italy). Icelanders will no doubt try to convince you that their lamb meat is the best out there and with good reason. The rumored secret behind the savory meat is the freedom the sheep are given to roam as they please.

For upscale dining, pay a visit to Food Cellar or Fiskfelagid Fish Company , where fresh seafood and lamb are served with a modern twist. If you'd rather grab a quick bite while saving some coin, sample a pylsur with the works (raw and fried onions, slightly spicy mustard, apple-filled ketchup and a relish-like sauce made with mayo and capers) at  Baejarins Beztu Pylsur . Be prepared to wait in line, though, since this hot dog stand is popular with locals and tourists alike. It has even welcomed American icons like former President Bill Clinton and Kim Kardashian West.

When you've eaten your way through all of Reykjavik's top restaurants, don't forget to stop by a cafe, where selling quality coffee made by trained baristas is the norm. Reykjavik Roasters is especially popular with locals. Icelandic beers made by companies like Einstök Beer Company and Ölgerdin Egill Skallagrímsson are also highly regarded. Some of Reykjavik's most popular watering holes include The Icelandic Bar and Micro Bar.

Getting Around Reykjavik

The best ways to get around Reykjavik are by foot, car and tour bus. Although rates are often higher for the best Iceland tours , traveling by tour bus comes without the headaches of driving on unfamiliar and sometimes icy roads. If you'd rather keep your travel expenses low and roam freely without sticking to a set schedule, car hires are likely your best option. Neither, however, is suggested for exploring central Reykjavik, which is small and walkable. Taxis and public transportation are available as well but are generally more expensive. To travel between the city center and Keflavik International Airport (KEF), consider using a local tour bus operator like Gray Line Iceland and Reykjavik Excursions.

Entry & Exit Requirements

Americans who wish to enter Iceland must have a U.S. passport that's valid for at least three months past their last day in the country. Proof of sufficient funds and a return airline ticket are also required, but travelers won't need a visa when staying less than 90 days. Additional information about Iceland's entry and exit requirements is available on the U.S. State Department's website .

Wander next to Reykjavik's harbor and you'll come across the Sun Voyager , a steel sculpture designed by Jon Gunnar Arnason.

You are overthinking this.

Possibility A; You are on road this is temporarily closed. In May you probably can sit it out for a few hours and it will reopen.

Possibility B: Your hotel tells you in the morning that the road is closed. If you cannot leave the hotel, how are others expected to arrive? Again you wait in the hotel until road reopens.

You should make sure that you have the weather site, the road site and the safety site all ready on your phone for references.

As Ragnar’s 2009 Venice Biennale collaborator Páll Haukur Björnsson writes of the paintings: “Objects that in themselves have obscure meanings are perfectly significant within the ideological fantasy that is the artist.” CF

Fjords, Pharaohs or Koalas? Time to Plan for Your Next Eclipse.

If you can’t get enough of totality, or missed out this time, you’ll have three more chances in the next four years in destinations like Iceland, Spain, Egypt and Australia.

  • Share full article

A small, black disk surrounded by a bright, white halo suspended in a mostly dark sky over the still waters of a lake in which dim, golden light from the horizon is reflecting. There are dark hills and mountains beyond the lake.

By Danielle Dowling

Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”

“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.

So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.

Future Eclipses

Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .

Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.

Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.

A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.

“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”

Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.

But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.

The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.

If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.

Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”

Pamela Hogan’s ‘The Day Iceland Stood Still,’ About 1975 Women’s Strike, Debuts Trailer (EXCLUSIVE)

The Day Iceland Stood Still

Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer (below) for “The Day Iceland Stood Still,” ahead of the film’s world premiere at Hot Docs on April 29.

When Oct. 24, 1975 was declared as “Women’s Day Off” in Iceland, some 90% of the island’s women refused to work, cook or take care of the children. The country was brought to a standstill.

Popular on Variety

The film provides some social context for the strike. Former supreme court chief Justice Guðrún Erlendsdóttir remembers being told she couldn’t go to law school because “you’ll be married before you’re 18,” and farmer Ágústa Þorkelsdottir, incensed that women couldn’t join the Farmers’ Association unless they were widows, wondered: “Do I have to kill my husband to be recognized as a farmer?”

Hogan comments: “I discovered this story seven years ago in a sidebar of the ‘Lonely Planet’ guide on a family trip to Iceland and raced to my computer to find the film that must have been made about it.”

She found no such film existed.

Hogan adds: “Werner Herzog says that certain stories ‘come at you and demand to be told – like the burglar who broke into your house overnight and rushes at you.’ That’s what this was like for me.

“Then I spent time with some of these feminist pioneers, and when I discovered how they used humor strategically to open people’s ears to their message, I thought – this film could actually be fun!”

The film has a score by Icelandic rock singer Margrét Rán and animated sequences by artist Joel Orloff. Musician Björk has contributed an end credits song.
