This relatively short but nonetheless epic road trip from Baltimore to Niagara Falls takes you through some fascinating towns and cities before you arrive at one of the world's most awesome natural landmarks.

The 380-mile road trip from Baltimore to Niagara Falls will take around 7 hours to drive. Key stops include Buffalo, Rochester and Harrisburg, as well as Allegheny National Forest, Gettysburg, Kinzua Bridge Skywalk and Susquehannock State Forest.

There are lots of great towns and cities to visit en route - as well as beautiful forests, parks and other scenic delights - so please keep reading until the end to learn about them all. We'll also share our top tips on where to stay and the best time of year to visit Niagara Falls.

How far is Niagara Falls from Baltimore, and how long will the road trip take?

There are a number of ways that you can drive between Baltimore and Niagara Falls. The quickest route spans a distance of 380 miles and takes 6 hours and 30 minutes to drive.

That said, with such a relatively short drive, a much better option would be to incorporate a few additional places of interest along the way. Our two recommenced routes are similar in distance and time on the road but add more enjoyment to the drive.

The Eastern Route takes 7 hours of non-stop driving and covers a distance of 425 miles, while our Western Route is slightly shorter at 380 miles and takes 6 hours and 45 minutes to drive.

While you could complete this road trip in a single day, a much better option would be to spread it out over at least two days and include an overnight stop - that way you can enjoy the views and explore the great cities and towns you'll pass.

If you have more time at your disposal, you could add Pittsburgh and Erie to your city visits and stretch the journey further, but for this road trip we will focus on the Eastern and Western routes as they both offer fantastic views in their own right.

Best road trip route from Baltimore to Niagara Falls

While there are several options for this road trip, our recommendation is to take either The Western Route or The Eastern Route. Both are fairly similar in distance but offer different views along the way.

The Eastern Route will take you via Rochester before heading west towards Niagara Falls. Following this option gives you the flexibility to visit Syracuse if you'd like to stretch your journey further.

Alternatively, our slightly quicker Western Route will take between Allegheny National Forest and Susquehannock State Forest, ideal for those looking to include a couple of hikes or nature walks into their road trip. This route also takes you through the fantastic city of Buffalo.

Both options offer fantastic views as well as passing less well known towns and cities that are definitely worth exploring. If you can't decide between them, why follow one to Niagara Falls and then the other back to Baltimore?

How to drive from Baltimore to Niagara Falls

The map above shows our suggestions for the best road trip routes between Baltimore and Niagara Falls. Keep reading for detailed descriptions of both routes, where to stay on either, and the best things to do on the way.

The Eastern Route

Leave Baltimore on Interstate 83 and follow the road past York until you reach Harrisburg. From here you can take a short detour to Tuscarora State Forest or Bald Eagle State Forest.

Cross the Susquehanna River and drive alongside it for 15 miles following the US-22, before crossing the Clarks Ferry Bridge and follow the US-15 past Selinsgrove, alongside Little Mountain and then through Williamsport.

Follow US-15 north and consider stopping to visit Susquehannock State Forest for its fantastic hikes and scenic views, before finally merging with I-99 and crossing into New York State.

Continue on this road as far as Gang Mills, where you'll take the exit and join I-86 before changing to I-390 to Rochester. You could easily spend a night in this city to really make the most of the attractions it has to offer, but if you are pressed for time, continue west on I-90.

As you approach Buffalo, turn onto I-290 through this fantastic city and join I-190 north to cross Grand Island. Leave to take US-62 which will take you all the way to your destination - Niagara Falls.

The Western Route

Our Western Route begins much the same as the route above. Leave Baltimore via I-83 heading north, through Harrison before joining US-22 as far as Clarks Ferry Bridge in Duncannon.

At this point the two routes split and instead of following US-15, you will continue along US-22/US-322, passing between Bald Eagle State Forest and Rothrock State Forest - both stunning natural areas that would make a great stop.

Merge with I-99 heading west as you pass by Penn State University, before continuing on US-322 north, where the road splits again. Continue along US-322 past the small towns of Bigler and Woodlands, before joining I-80 west and then US-219 heading north.

After a short drive, you will pass through Ridgway and alongside the stunning Allegheny National Forest, before crossing into New York state and the popular city of Buffalo.

Follow I-190 north across Grand Island, before leaving the interstate to join US-62 which will take you into Niagara Falls and complete your trip.

Best places to stop between Baltimore and Niagara Falls

There are a number of fantastic overnight stops you can make on the road trip from Baltimore to Niagara Falls, depending on which route you take and how many days you plan to drive.

If you are pressed for time, here are a couple of less known but equally wonderful places to visit and spend the night.

Stop in "America's most fun small town", Corning

If you've chosen to follow The Eastern Route, then ideally situated at halfway through your trip and 4 hours into your drive, is the pretty town of Corning. Known as "America's most fun small town", this stop is close to the main route and yet provides a fantastic spot for sightseeing.

The town's historic downtown, the Gaffer district, is a colorful and vibrant place to wile away a few hours visiting the independent shops and eateries you'll find here. There's also Corning Glass Museum and Rockwell Museum that are well worth a visit.

If you have the time, Corning is also a great gateway point to visit to Finger Lakes Wine Country - a stunning location of glacially-designed lakes and hills that are popular with growing grapes.

For a hotel with a great location and amenities, you can't go wrong with a stay at the Hampton Inn Corning/Painted Post . Situated close to the main route and only 2.7 miles from Erwin Hollow State Forest, this hotel is perfectly placed to go sightseeing.

Rooms at the Hampton Inn Corning are comfortable and modern, there's even a fantastic indoor pool which is an ideal way to relax after a busy day. With free parking and mountain views, this hotel is a great base before embarking on the final stretch of your trip.

Head back to school at State College

Situated just 3 hours from Baltimore, State College is a great place to stop if you have followed The Western Route. This Pennsylvanian town is not only a great place to rest up between two full days of exploring the sights, but it's a great place to visit in its own right.

The town of State College grew up around what's now Penn State University. You can spend some time visiting this historic campus, as well as enjoy the Arboretum at Penn State if you're after some peace and relaxation.

State College also offers a good selection of restaurants and bars in the center of town, or if you're after something a bit more rugged, just 45 minutes by car you'll find Allegheny State Forest, a great place for outdoor adventuring.

For an overnight stop, a stay at the Graduate State College couldn't be more appropriate . This 4-star hotel is decked out in a quirky yet comfortable style with a nod to its home town's most famous institution.

Centrally located so you can explore State College, the accommodation also has parking on site making it a stress-free stop. For a memorable evening, why not eat in the Trophy Room, which serves breakfast and dinner, and enjoy some specialty cocktails?

• Heritage Rail Trail, York - Explore this 21-mile heritage trail as you pass through town, country and riverside landscapes on the cycle path outside York.
• Hershey - The home of all things chocolate, take a tour around Hershey's Chocolate World, Hersheypark amusement park or the Hershey Story Museum – but don't skip the Hershey's historic downtown area when you're passing through.
• Harrisburg - Pennsylvania's state capital hosts regular exhibitions courtesy of the Art Association of Harrisburg, and is home to a number of historic mansions that tell the story of the city during America's Gilded Era.
• Fort Hunter Mansion & Park - Take a tour of the historic mansion then enjoy a walk along the Susquehanna River and the old Pennsylvania Canal Trail.
• Stargazing at Cherry Springs State Park - A short detour accessible from either the Eastern or Western Route, this state park in Coudersport was the first International Dark Sky Park in the region so it's a fantastic spot to see the stars.
• Buffalo - New York state's second largest city isn't just a waypoint as your approach nearby Niagara Falls. Enjoy watersports at Canalside, take a stroll along the Riverwalk, or visit the architectural must-see that is Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House Complex.
• Gettysburg - The 1863 Civil War Battle of Gettysburg changed the course of US history. Visit the interactive Museum of the Civil War or the National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center to learn more.
• Niagara Falls - Take in the stunning views at your destination that hardly needs an introduction – take a boat or helicopter tour for while you're in town, or visit the Cave of the Winds to get right up close to the Falls.
• Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center - Learn about the stories of people who passed through the town on their route to freedom.

Eastern Route

• The Rockwell Museum - Located in Corning's historic town hall building, explore this elegant museum to discover works by American artists.
• Seneca Lake Wine Trail - Take a short detour from the main route to tour some of the 27 cool climate wineries that you'll find close to Seneca Lake.

Rochester - Visit the oldest photography collection in the world at the George Eastman Museum, or time your trip to take in the city's popular Jazz Festival or Fringe Festival.

Western Route

• Wineries - Find yourself a designated driver and visit Bear Creek Wines, Flickerwood Win Cellars or the Winery at Wilcox to taste a selection of locally produced wines
• Allegheny National Forest - Ideal for nature lovers, enjoy a hike or picnic in this vast national forest, or head to the Allegheny Reservoir for swimming or boating.
• Kinzua Bridge Skywalk - This elevated walkway - built on the remains of what was once the world's longest rail viaduct – offers fantastic panoramic views across the stunning Kinzua Bridge State Park.
• Smethport - Take a tour of the Gilded Era mansions of this charming village built around the lovely Hamlin Lake.

Best time to go on a road trip from Baltimore to Niagara Falls

The road trip from Baltimore to Niagara Falls is one that could be enjoyed all year round, although that does very much depend on what you want to get out of it.

There are lots of places along this route that can be enjoyed despite the weather, such as the museums and indoor attractions and winter can be a spectacular time to visit if you're hoping to see a frozen waterfall.

However, with temperatures at Niagara Falls getting as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit, coupled with the fact that traveling in winter is likely to mean you miss out on the many outdoor attractions you'll pass along the way, you might opt out of visiting between December and February.

Summer can be a great time to visit as you'll be guaranteed of the hottest weather, while the falls is likely to be busy all year, you should expect the biggest crowds to peak during July and August, and in line with Labor Day and Independence Day holidays.

That said, because the road trip route passes through some relatively quiet towns and outdoor attractions, you'll still be able to find some space to relax even if you take this trip in peak season.

Late spring or early fall are both good times to take this route, with temperatures hitting the mid 60s and above from May to September. You'll be able to enjoy hikes through Allegheny State Forest or tour the Finger Lakes wineries in the sunshine if you visit at this time of year.

NYC to Finger Lakes East Coast Road Trip

This NYC to Finger Lakes road trip is the perfect East Coast road trip for wine lovers, waterfall friends, and art lovers alike. This road trip can be done at any time of year, as there’s never a bad time to visit the Finger Lakes! 

However, winter weather can be unpredictable, so we suggest visiting the Finger Lakes in summer if you want to swim and enjoy the lakes or in autumn if you want to take advantage of the beautiful fall foliage. 

Day 1 -2: Start by leaving New York City and going straight to Ithaca; traveling via Scranton, Pennsylvania is the fastest (and a fun stop for fans of the Office — or President Biden!) Travel around Ithaca for some of the best waterfalls you’ll be able to find anywhere in the US! 

A few great waterfalls include the waterfall at Cascadilla Gorge Trail and the falls at Taughannock Falls State Park. 

After exploring the waterfalls, do some wine tasting around Cayuga Lake, following the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail. 

Day 3-4: Seneca Falls makes a good stop, where you can learn about the history of women’s suffrage at Women’s Rights National Historical Park and see the home of the noted suffragette, Elizabeth Cady Stanton. 

If you’re still looking for more wineries, head to the  Seneca Lake Wine Trail next, to taste some of the region’s best wines. Continue on to Watkins Glen State Park for some incredible hiking with beautiful views — this is also a great place for fall foliage. 

Day 5: Finally, end your road trip in Corning, with a trip to the Corning Museum of Glass, before returning to NYC or heading onwards to Niagara Falls if you want to continue your road trip.

The lovely La Tourelle Hotel & Spa , located near Buttermilk Falls State Park, is an incredible place to stay in Ithaca. Ithaca makes a good base for traveling around the Finger Lakes region if you don’t want to move around with every stop.

Stop 1 : Along the route, you will want to stop at Portsmouth, the New Hampshire port city, where you can admire the historic architecture at the 10-acre Strawbery Banke Museum, and enjoy shopping at some of the many lovely stores in the city.

Stop 2 (full day) : Next, drive on to Portland, where you will want to spend at least a full day exploring. In Portland’s Old Port, wander the streets and admire the beautiful old red brick architecture. There are many one-of-a-kind shops to browse and street art to view.

Walk the waterfront, to photograph the many boats lined up in the harbor. Stroll Congress Square Park and Monument Square.

Enjoy a sweet treat at the Holy Donut. Eat seafood at Portland Lobster Company. Take in the views from Munjoy Hill. Visit Portland Head Light, one of the most beautiful lighthouses on the US east coast.

Stop 3 : On the coastal route to Camden, enjoy the Androscoggin Swinging Bridge, a pedestrian suspension bridge that crosses the river of the same name, and the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. 

Stop 4 (full day) : Arrive at Bar Harbor, where you can spend the rest of the day exploring the cute town before you hit up the park the following day.

Stop 5 : At Acadia National Park, there are numerous trails to hike, and scenic overlooks for photos. Don’t miss Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse: it is particularly beautiful at sunset.

Road Trip from Annapolis MD, Chincoteague, VA to Virginia Beach

Stop 2 – Wild Horses of Chincoteague Island, VA: Next, drive 2.5 hours south across the Chesapeake Bay and down its banks to the unspoiled beauty of Chincoteague Island.

The wild ponies are actually located on Assateague Island which is a National Park Seashore located nearby. You can go to the seashore and see the ponies that are living wild and were the inspiration for the family movie, Misty. 

Lots to do on top of watching ponies and hanging out at the beach including visiting the Assateague Lighthouse and the Captain Timothy Hill House. There are some small hotels on the island and also lots of beach rental properties.

If you are traveling in the spring, fall, or winter, we recommend all-weather gear for kids to enjoy the sand and surf without being too cold!  

Stop 3 – Virginia Beach, VA: The final stop on your road trip is the vast and beautiful beaches of Virginia Beach. There are actually 28 miles of sandy public beaches to explore!

There is also a wide boardwalk with dozens of hotels right on the beach. The Residence Inn Virginia Beach Oceanfront is a great option as each suite has a kitchenette to save money on making meals in the room.

Virginia Beach is a contrast to Chincoteague as it has all the vacation amenities right at your door including tons of shops, restaurants, and things to do like mini golf, surrey bike rentals, and more.

This 10-day itinerary features one of the best road trips on the east coast of the USA, from Washington D.C. to Philadelphia, and ending in New York City. These three American cities are not only historical but offer tons of fun things to see and do. 

You can start in either Washington D.C. or New York City. This road trip can be done any time of the year but is especially good in the early summer months. 

Day 1-3: Start by spending 3 days exploring Washington D.C. the capital of the United States. The great thing about Washington D.C. is that many of the main attractions are free. Begin your time in D.C. by touring the Capitol Building. 

Tours of the Capitol are free but must be booked online and a booking fee of $1.50 per person will be charged to secure your time. During your tour, you’ll get to explore the famous rotunda and the House Chamber. 

Next head to one of the many Smithsonian Museums. All of these museums are free but my personal favorite and must-do in Washington D.C. is the Natural History Museum. Take a walk down the National Mall hitting all the famous memorials.

Take a trip to the top of the Washington Memorial then climb the steps to the Lincoln Memorial. Get an up close and personal look at the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives Museum, another free activity in Washington D.C. that can be booked online. 

Day 4 – 5: Your next stop is Philadelphia, the birthplace of the United States. Philadelphia also offers many free things to do and most attractions are within walking distance of the city centre. 2 days in Philadelphia is the perfect amount of time to see this city’s best attractions. 

Book a free tour of Independence Hall and learn about the beginnings of the USA, tours can be booked in advance and tickets can be picked up on the day. After your tour head to the Liberty Bell – one of the most famous symbols of American Independence. 

Just a stone’s throw away from Independence Hall is the Betsy Ross house where the very first United States Flag was sewn. To tour the house will cost around $5. 

A short walk from the Betsy Ross house is Elfreth’s Alley, a quaint cobble-stoned alley and the oldest residential street in the United States. Explore the Reading Terminal Market for all your snacks and sweet treats.

Day 6 – 10: And finally, end your road trip in the big apple – New York City! NYC is a huge city with a plethora of activities. 5 days is recommended for this part of the trip in order to see New York’s best attractions. 

Some must do’s in New York City are the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and a visit to an observation deck. There are plenty of options for an observation deck, our favorite is the Rockefeller Centre with its iconic views of the Empire State Building.

But you can also opt for the newer One World Observatory of the Empire State Building itself. 

A walk through Central Park is always on every list of things to do in New York. Take your time walking through this park as there are many sights to stop at and take photos.

A New York food tour is a great option for sampling the best food in the city. Donuts, coffee, hotdogs, and pizza should be on your list of foods to try in New York. End your trip by sipping on cocktails in one of New York’s rooftop bars!

St Augustine, Florida to Beaufort, South Carolina

The east coast is one of the most beautiful places in the country for a road trip. There is a good balance of nature, cities, and historic places on the drive from St Augustine, Florida to Beaufort, South Carolina.

Driving straight through would take less than 6 hours. Three days is advisable to leisurely take in all the sites of the coast.

Day 1: Starting in St Augustine, avoid the concrete and signs of the highway and take A1A along the shore. Most of the way to Amelia Island offers gorgeous Atlantic views. At the end of the road, it is an easy transition onto 95 which will go all the way to Savannah and then 170 into Beaufort.

St Augustine, the oldest city in the U.S., is rich with history and needs a full day to explore. Enjoy traditional Spanish architecture on a walking tour throughout the town. 

Do check out Castillo de San Marco’s, a 17th century stone Spanish fortress. Take a drink from Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth. Then relax at the 1905 Columbia Restaurant for traditional Spanish food.

Day 2 : Savannah is the next stopping point. There are a number of driftwood beaches and golden sand beaches along the way. Once in town, stay in the Historic District at one of the Heritage Hotels.

Most of this area can be explored on foot including Colonial Park Cemetery. The famous Bonaventure Cemetery and the Wormsloe Plantation are a short drive from the city.

Day 3 : On day three head up towards Beaufort, home of Forrest Gump. Make sure to stop and grab boiled peanuts from a roadside stand. Just north of Beaufort is the jaw-dropping Sheldon Church Ruins and the St Helena Chapel of Ease.

This stretch of coast has something for everyone for a memorable and enjoyable road trip.

North Georgia Mountains Road Trip

Road tripping the North Georgia mountains is an amazing experience. Begin your trip in Downtown Dahlonega and drive all the way up to Blue Ridge.

On the way, this unique road trip takes visitors through the small towns of Helen and Cleveland. We recommend keeping aside 3 to 4 days to enjoy the destinations. 

Day 1 : (Downtown Dahlonega) The trip is the ultimate combination of small-town charm, natural scenery, and loads of history. After all, this was where the first gold rush in America occurred in the 19th century. You can learn all about it at Dahlonega Gold Museum.

Take a stroll around the historic structures and shop at the boutiques. 

Day 2 : Stop in Cleveland at the Babyland General Hospital. This toy store/museum is most known as the home of the famous Cabbage Patch Kids. Families love seeing the many handmade dolls and accessories as well as seeing new kids ‘being born’. 

Day 3: Then visit Helen and enjoy the striking Bavarian architecture. Drink German beer and eat an apple strudel. Helen is also popular for river tubing in the summer.

The state parks and recreation areas outside of Helen are perfect for hiking while the wineries surrounding Helen are great for wine tasting. Stay at the Helendorf River Inn by the water. 

Day 4: Your final stop should be in Downtown Blue Ridge. The fall colors are spectacular here but the town is great to visit year-round. Go shopping, fish, or have a nice meal while you relax downtown. Enjoy the fresh mountain air in North Georgia before you return to routine.

Providence RI to Provincetown, Cape Cod, MA

Stop 1 : Begin your journey in Providence, RI where you can enjoy a relaxing afternoon in the park and the many attractions located throughout Roger Williams Park and a stroll through Federal Hill, Providence’s Historic Neighborhood marked by a bronze pinecone.

You will find plenty of Italian restaurants along Atwells Avenue in Federal Hill. The perfect way to end a day spent in Providence is to take a sunset Gondola ride through downtown Providence. 

Stop 2 : Your next stop will be Newport, RI where you can enjoy the Cliff Walk, a paved walk along the shore, a visit to historic Fort Adams, see pieces of art at the Newport Art Museum, and spend a couple hours relaxing on a sandy beach. 

Stop 3 : After Newport, continue on to Plymouth, MA. Here you can view Plymouth Rock, the landing site of the Pilgrims, climb aboard a replica of the Mayflower II, wander the streets of Plymouth and find plenty of quaint, local shops, and visit a replicated village, the Plimoth Plantation.

Stop 4: From here, you will head to the Cape, stopping first in Sandwich at the Heritage Museum and Gardens. Next drive along the Cape Cod National Seashore, where you can stop in many small towns to hit the beach, try some seafood, and visit some lighthouses. 

Stop 5: Your final stop will be Provincetown where you can enjoy some shopping, enjoy an over-sand vehicle tour, go whale watching, and view Cape Cod’s famous sunsets.

While there are fun winter activities that could be enjoyed in the colder months, summer is the best time to take this road trip to get all that these destinations have to offer.

Miami to Key West, Florida

The road trip from Miami to Key West, Florida is arguably one of the best road trips in the United States (and all of North America)!  The road connects two fantastic cities and has a plethora of beautiful stops along the way, making it ideal for all travelers.

Technically, the duration of the road trip from Miami to Key West takes 3 hours and 17 minutes (159 miles), but you will be missing out on so many amazing stops if you drive straight through.

It is recommended to take your time on the drive and you can even extend your road trip from 3 hours to 3 days and never run out of things to do along the way!

As you will be starting from Miami, we suggest adding these road trip attractions to extend your Florida getaway. Spend 1-2 days in Miami exploring Wynwood Walls, Little Havana, Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, and Miami Beach. 

With an extra day, you can also visit Everglades National Park before kickstarting the Miami-Key West road trip as outlined below.

Day 1 : The first stop is in Key Largo, Florida.  This Upper Keys city is 69 miles (1 hour and 21 minutes) away from Miami.  When you’re there, you will find amazing attractions such as Coral Castle, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, and Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge.  

There are also several places where you can stay overnight and one of the top recommendations is the Key Largo Marriott Resort , which sits along the bay and allows you to even see manatees from the dock!

Day 2 : On day two, you will drive from Key Largo to Marathon where you can see historical and geological parks such as Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park and Long Key State Park.  A recommended place to stay is the 4-star Tranquility Bay Resort which offers delightful ocean views.

Day 3 : The next day, you will take off from Marathon and pass through other places such as the Blue Hole on Big Pine Key, Bahia Honda State Park (a must stop!), and you can eventually pull into Kimpton Winslow’s Bungalow Hotel in Key West and get ready for your final adventure there.

The Blue Ridge Parkway

The full Blue Ridge Parkway route stretches from Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to the entrance of Shenandoah National Park in Virginia (where it turns into the equally scenic Skyline Drive). 

The great thing about the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway is that you can easily break it down into a 3-day weekend getaway, or an epic week-long (or multi-week) vacation. The speed limit is 45 mph, but many drivers go even slower as they soak in the stunning scenic views. 

Theoretically speaking, it would take 15 hours to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway straight through with no stops.

With more than 15 million annual visitors, the BRP is the #1 most popular unit in the US National Park Service. There are 200 Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks in NC and VA, each offering jaw-dropping vistas of America’s wilderness at its most pristine.

From mountains and waterfalls to lush valleys and forests, there are countless noteworthy landmarks along the way. 

Day 1 – 4: Most people don’t drive the entire Blue Ridge Parkway in one stretch, rather breaking it up into day trips or multi-day vacations. We spent 4 days traveling from Cherokee NC (Milepost 469) to Banner Elk, NC (MP 305), and honestly wished we’d had more time for waterfall hikes, exploring attractions, etc. 

Some of our favorites included Mount Mitchell (NC’s tallest), Pisgah National Forest, the Linville Gorge Wilderness, the Linn Cove Viaduct, Looking Glass Rock, Grandfather Mountain State Park, and Price Lake at Julian Price Memorial Park. 

Best of all, there are no billboards, neon signs, restaurants, shopping centers, or other signs of commerce (or “progress”) on the road’s entire length. Just miles and miles of gorgeous views of unspoiled nature at its finest!

There is only one hotel situated on the entire Blue Ridge Parkway– the Switzerland Inn in the quaint little alpine village of Little Switzerland NC . But there are loads of hotels, lodges, and cabins for rent within a few miles of the historic route.

Outer Banks Road Trip

Outer Banks, a set of barrier islands off the Atlantic coast is a great place to enjoy some of the best beaches along with loads of other interesting things.

The scenic road passes through many small coastal villages along the route – Duck, Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Avon, Buxton, Hatteras, and Ocracoke to name a few. 

The route takes about 6.5 hrs including the 3.5 hrs on two ferry rides – one from Hatteras Island to Ocracoke island which is free and the other from Ocracoke to Cedar Island which is paid.

Stop 1/lighthouse stops : There are many beautiful lighthouses along the way including the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the iconic Bodie Island Lighthouse, and Ocracoke lighthouse worth a stop.

This is the place where the Wright brothers created history by flying the first flight. So stop by the Wright Brothers Memorial and witness the flight strip.

If you are an adventure lover, then there are options galore. 

Stop 2 : Drive your AWD vehicle on Corolla and Cape Hatteras beaches or chase wild horses at Corolla or indulge in water sports.

Stop 3 : For the last leg of the trip, do spend a day at Ocracoke Harbor Inn in the quaint village of Ocracoke.

In all of these stops, it won’t be justice to the ethereal beauty of the place to just drive by without staying and watching the magical sunset/sunrise. 

We would highly recommend staying at Days Inn & Suites Mariner Kill Devils Hills , one of the best Outer Banks hotels during the beginning of the Outer Banks road trip. It is located right by the beach and conveniently located near major attractions like Wright Brothers Memorial, Jockey Ridge State Park, and the shopping complex.

New York City to Boston to Hanover, New Hampshire

A fantastic 7 day road trip on the East Coast would be from New York City to Boston to Hanover, New Hampshire. 

Day1 – 3 : You should start in New York City and spend 2-3 days here exploring all the city highlights. You can explore on foot or by public transportation. If you want to be in the middle of everything, then spend 3 nights at the gorgeous Knickerbocker Hotel at Times Square .  

Over the next couple of days, you should take the ferry and go see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, visit the 911 Memorial and Museum, walk the High-Line and attend a Broadway show. 

Day 4 – 6: On day four, you should drive 3 ½ hours on I-90 from New York City to Boston, and then, spend the next three nights at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Boston .

From there, you can easily walk everywhere, exploring the Freedom Trail – a 2.5 mile walk that connects 16 historically significant sites – or taking a food tour of Little Italy or the Boston Public Market . 

Day 7: On day seven, you should drive 2 hours on the I-93 and I-89 to reach the small town of Hanover, New Hampshire. Here, you can experience all the lovely stores, cafes, and restaurants on Main Street, and explore Dartmouth Campus. The Hanover Inn is a lovely hotel in the center of town.

Boston, MA to Provincetown (Cape Cod)

The road trip from Boston to Provincetown can certainly be made in a day but is more leisurely made in 4.

The high season is July and August, but spring and fall offer fewer tourists and better hotel rates. As you travel through the Cape Cod towns and villages , you will find each has a unique personality. 

Day 1 : From Boston, take Route 3 and cross the Sagamore Bridge onto the Cape. Continue to Sandwich, where you’ll visit the 17th Century Hoxie House, and The Sandwich Glass Museum, and walk along the Sandwich boardwalk for sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Have dinner and check into the Belfry Inn & Bistro, unique accommodations within a former church. 

Day 2 : Grab a pastry, coffee, and picnic lunch at The Brown Jug, then head for Route 6A. You’ll want to meander along, making stops at the boutiques and antique shops.

Have lunch at Nickerson State Park in Brewster, overlooking one of Cape Cod’s ancient kettle ponds, then head to Orleans. There, browse Tree’s Place for some fine art and walk the Rock Harbor beach.

Rest your head for the night at The Parsonage Inn , a lovely bed and breakfast.

Day 3 : Pick up Route 6 through the towns of the Outer Cape, flanking the National Seashore. Once in Provincetown, explore the vibrant town center for souvenirs and street performances. Get a birds-eye view of MacMillan Pier by climbing the steps of Pilgrim Monument.

Next, tour the sand dunes with Art’s Dune Tours–and upgrade to the sunset lobster dinner at Race Point beach. Spend your night at The Crowne Point Hotel and Spa .

Day 4 : Finally, head back to Boston along Route 6 for a faster return, crossing over the Bourne bridge.  Or, better yet, take the ferry.

Road trip through Shenandoah Valley, Virginia

A road trip through Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley combines scenic country roads, quaint towns, rich history, and outdoor fun. Allow 3 to 5 days for the 200-mile trip from Winchester to Roanoke Virginia. 

Highway 81, the quickest route through the valley, offers beautiful views of farms, rolling hills, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. But you will find even more to enjoy on the smaller country roads that traverse the valley, including historic Route 11.

Virginia is beautiful year-round, but the valley is especially beautiful in spring and fall.

Day 1: Begin your trip exploring the walkable downtown of Winchester, Virginia. The lovely Old Town Pedestrian Mall is lined with restaurants, shops, and fun for kids at the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum. 

Stay at The George Washington Hotel and you can walk to the mall, local breweries, and historic sites.

Day 2: As you head south, visit apple orchards, farm stores, breweries, and wineries that dot the countryside. Spend your second night in Harrisonburg, a college town with a fun and relaxed vibe. Or continue further and explore the towns and sights in the Southern Shenandoah Valley . 

Staunton is home to the American Shakespeare Center, the world’s only re-creation of Shakespeare’s Blackfriars Theater. In Lexington, take a hike to the 215-foot high formation at Natural Bridge State Park then head underground to the Caverns at Natural Bridge.

Day 3 – 4: End your road trip in the hip town of Roanoke. This haven for outdoor lovers is surrounded by great hiking, paddling, and some of the best mountain biking in the Eastern US. 

Stay at the historic Roanoke Hotel and you can walk to the dining, breweries, and shops that pack the compact downtown. Be sure to drive up Mill Mountain to see the 88-foot Roanoke Star and a fantastic view of the valley.

East Coast Road Trip from Washington DC to West Virginia

If you are looking for a quiet escape into nature then a weekend getaway in West Virginia is going to take you on an off the beaten path road trip. This easy drive from Washington DC will take you through the windy roads, lush mountains, and fresh air of the Mountain State.

It will take you roughly 4-5 hours to get to Monongahela National Forest from DCA Reagan National Airport. You can complete this entire road trip in 2-3 days.

Day 1: Start your drive in the northern region of West Virginia i.e. cutting through the Monongahela National Forest, after visiting Blackwater Falls State Park or Seneca Rocks if you love hiking.

Then head on south to route 28 towards the town of Greenbank and Cass continuing on until you hit New River Gorge. 

Day 2 : The town of Cass is known for its scenic railway ride in autumn and skiing in winter. Greenbank is best known for its National Radio Astronomy Observatory which is a fun stop for kids and science lovers.

Our favorite season to visit WV is Autumn to see the gorgeous fall foliage. One of the most scenic Fall drives in West Virginia is the Highland Scenic Highway which is also known as State Route 150. It’s a 23 mile long American scenic byway.

Summer would be another good season to visit especially if you are considering camping outdoors. 

Day 3: If you are the adventurous type then you must go White Water rafting in New River Gorge which offers one of the best class 5 rapids in the US. Do not miss the New River Gorge Bridge which is an iconic structure in West Virginia.

We recommend the Mountain Quest Inn , for a refreshing and quaint stay in West Virginia. This place is located in the middle of a working farm so expect to see horses, goats, and even llamas. But the best part about this place is its extensive two-story home library.

The drive from Charleston, South Carolina, to Savannah, Georgia, is one of the most charming road trips on the east coast.

Toronto is not only one of our favorite road trips from New York because of its close proximity to the U.S. border, but as the largest city in Canada, it is also one of the most vibrant cities with lots of entertainment. 

When you look at the dazzling Toronto skyline including the most famous landmark, the CN tower, you might get reminded of certain cities in the U.S. (it is even called New York North) but don’t get fooled. Toronto is a hub for multiple cultures. A great example is the Casa Loma, a Gothic Revival castle that is well worth a visit, or St. Lawrence Market where you can find cuisines from all over the world.

If you are more of an outdoor person, go visit the several parks and gardens within the city or take a quick drive over to the gorgeous Scarborough Bluffs.

Top Tip: Coming from New York, you will most likely enter Canada at the border close to Buffalo. In that case, make sure to add Niagara Falls to your list of what to do. You will get the best experience when visiting them from the American and Canadian sides.

The Long Island doctor killed when she flew out of a moving Airstream trailer had been traveling with family to watch the eclipse — and her daughter witnessed the horror, a neighbor and cops said Monday.

Well-respected pediatrician Monika Woroniecka — a 58-year-old married mom of three and allergy and immunology specialist with Stony Brook Medicine — was in the sleek silver 2024 trailer that she and her husband had just bought two months ago when the freak accident occurred on an upstate highway Saturday, a resident told The Post through tears.

“They were going upstate to watch the solar eclipse,” said the grief-stricken neighbor, who only gave her first name, Maria. “My husband saw them right before they left. He happened to talk to them, and [Woroniecka’s husband] Robert [said] they were going up with their daughter to see the total eclipse.

“Poor Robert. Poor kids,” she said, crying. “Really nice family, good neighbors — the best.” 

Minutes before the tragedy, Woroniecka and daughter Helena had been riding with Robert in the family’s 2019 Ford Ram pickup truck, which Robert was driving while towing the Airstream behind it, state police told The Post on Monday.

The family, headed to an AirBnb in Cape Vincent, stopped at a Stewart’s gas station in upstate Brownville for ice cream, state police Sgt. Jack Keller said.

That’s when Woroniecki and Helena — who is set to get married this year — decided to ride in the trailer for the last 20 minutes of their trip.

It is illegal for anyone to ride in a “house coach trailer” such as the family’s Airstream while it is hitched to a vehicle and traveling on the road, according to state law.

“According to Helena’s accounts, she was lying on the bed located in the rear of the camper,” Keller said. “Helena recalls that her mother was trying to secure the passenger side door of the camper and subsequently gets thrown from the Airstream.”

State troopers said motorists who witnessed the tragic 3 p.m. tumble recounted the passenger door of the trailer swing open on State Route 12K in Watertown, with the doctor seen still clutching the door handle.

She was thrown to the pavement, striking her head on the shoulder, police said.

Woroniecka was rushed to Samaritan Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

“They moved here about four, five years ago,” Maria told The Post of the Stony Brook family. “They just brought the Airstream two months ago. [Woroniecki] was so sweet. Really nice person — really nice.

“They have three daughters,” she added of the couple. “One of them is a musician. She was going to school in the city. The oldest daughter lives in Virginia. The other one is studying to be a doctor in Arizona, and she’s getting married this year. Oh God! I can’t believe this.”

Maria said the daughter studying music would sit outside and play the violin, to the delight of neighbors. The daughter is enrolled at Julliard, according to social media posts.

“They were planning trips,” she said of the couple. “They were planning to go to the daughter’s wedding in Arizona.”

The victim worked at Stony Brook Medicine since the early 2000s,  according to her medical profile .

“She enjoys working with children and their families and developing a long-term relationship with families while guiding them through chronic allergy-related conditions,” the profile said. “Dr. Woroniecka’s native language is Polish [and] draws Polish-speaking families from far distances.

“Dr. Woroniecka likes to travel, hike, exercise, and spend time with family and friends,” the post adds.

Earthquake maps show where seismic activity shook the Northeast today

Residents across the Northeast were rattled by a  4.8 magnitude earthquake that shook  the densely populated New York City metropolitan area and much of the surrounding region on Friday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey was quick to release maps showing the spot where the quake was centered, in New Jersey, and the area where it was felt.

The USGS reported the quake occurred about 7 miles north of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. It indicated that the quake might have been felt by more than 42 million people. There were several aftershocks later in the day, including one with a magnitude of 4.0.

People in Baltimore , Philadelphia , New Jersey, Connecticut, Boston and other areas of the Northeast reported shaking. Tremors lasting for several seconds were felt over 200 miles away near the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border.

The map below shows the seismic intensity of the earthquake. The map, which is mostly a lighter shade of blue, shows that the intensity was light to weak, depending on the distance from the epicenter. 

Another map released by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre on X, formerly Twitter, highlights the eyewitness reports of shaking and possible damage levels during the seismic event.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams have been briefed on the quake. 

"We're taking this extremely seriously and here's why: There's always the possibility of aftershocks. We have not felt a magnitude of this earthquake since about 2011," Hochul said. 

People across the region were startled by the rumbling of the quake. One New York City resident told CBS New York's Elijah Westbrook, "I was laying in my bed, and my whole apartment building started shaking. I started freaking out," 

It's not the first time the East Coast and New York City have been hit by an earthquake. 

A 5.0 quake was measured in New York City in 1884. 

The shaking stirred memories of the Aug. 23, 2011, earthquake that jolted tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada. Registering magnitude 5.8, it was the strongest quake to hit the East Coast since World War II. The epicenter was in Virginia.

That earthquake left cracks in the Washington Monument, spurred the evacuation of the White House and Capitol and rattled New Yorkers three weeks before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Thinking of taking a last-minute drive to see the eclipse here's what to know.

NASA says that roughly 31.6 million people live in the path of this year's total solar eclipse, and a little under half of the U.S. population lives within 200 miles driving distance of the path of totality .

That could mean many millions of Americans will hit the road to get a better view on April 8. If you're still pondering whether or not you want to make the journey, here's what to consider.

Have some destinations in mind, and check the weather and cloud cover forecasts in advance

It's a good idea to scout out one or more locations within driving distance, so that you have some flexibility if traffic or weather is threatening your plans, says Jonathan Upchurch, a professor emeritus of civil engineering at Arizona State University who has studied travel around solar eclipses.

There are several interactive tools that show the path of totality, including Eclipse2024.org and the National Solar Observatory . You can use them to figure out what sites might work best for you.

In terms of weather, check not just the weather forecast, but also the cloud cover forecast. Some websites, such as Windy.com will predict cloud cover ahead of time, giving you a sense of whether you'll actually be able to see the eclipse in all its glory.

During the total solar eclipse in 2017, Upchurch says he chose to go to Idaho "because there were some great chances of having sunny skies, and I had the opportunity to be nimble and relocate if I wanted to."

Before driving into the path of totality, make sure your gas tank is full and that you've got everything you need

During the last total solar eclipse in 2017, it's estimated some 5 million people took to the roads, and those numbers will potentially be much higher this year.

Given all that, Upchurch says it's important to make sure you're taking what you need into the path of totality. You should make sure your car is gassed or charged up, and that you have plenty of snacks and water with you in case you get stranded for a while, especially when trying to leave.

Simple tips to safely photograph the eclipse with your cellphone.

Also don't forget to bring eclipse glasses, which must be worn anytime you're looking at the sun, except for the few minutes when it is completely blocked by the moon.

Some state emergency planners also recommend bringing a paper map or road atlas in case cellular networks become overloaded with visitors seeking directions from their phones.

Arrive early and stay late

Once you figure out where you're going to watch the eclipse, and you've got your supplies, try to get there early. Although traffic is likely to be heavier than normal on the morning of eclipse day, it still should be possible to reach many destinations without too much hassle, says Upchurch.

"Leaving is definitely going to be more of a problem," he says. As the eclipse concludes, people will take to the roads all at once to try and get home as fast as they can. In 2017, that led to traffic jams that lasted many hours in some areas. If possible, Upchurch says, people should stay put for a while to try and avoid the worst of the post-eclipse rush, which in 2017 stretched even into the following day in some parts of the country.

And one more thing: If you do find yourself on the move near the time of the eclipse, state officials stress that you should not simply pull over to the side of the road or highway you're driving on. It's important to be parked legally and safely at the moment of totality.

If you're already in the path of totality: Relax and enjoy!

Several major metropolitan areas including Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo are already inside the path of totality, so there's no need to seek a better view, Upchurch says. You'll probably have the most fun simply staying where you are.

If you're on the edge of the path of totality, however, you might consider making a short trip to get closer to the center of the eclipse's path.

"If you're within about 40 miles of the center line, you'll have two-and-a-half minutes or more" of complete totality, Upchurch says. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth making the trip to a more central location.

Despite studying the potential hassles of traveling extensively, Upchurch says he's still looking forward to seeing the 2024 eclipse, which he plans to watch from Texas.

"Totality is absolutely spectacular," he says. "If you have a chance to witness it, I would do it."

4.0 magnitude aftershock recorded in New Jersey, USGS says

An aftershock of a preliminary magnitude 4.0 has struck just southwest of Gladstone, New Jersey, according to the United States Geological Survey .

It happened at about 5:59 p.m. ET, USGS said.

The aftershock comes nearly 8 hours after the main shock of 4.8 magnitude this morning. There have been at least 10 aftershocks, though most were in the 1.8 to 2.2 magnitude range.

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake rattled buildings across parts of the US Northeast on Friday morning, according to the US Geological Survey, with tremors felt from Washington, DC to New York City and to Maine.

It was the third-largest earthquake recorded in the area in the last five decades and the strongest in New Jersey i n more than 240 years , the USGS said. But with authorities reporting little or no damage, and minimal travel disruptions, people soon resumed their everyday lives.

Here's what to know:

• New Jersey: Gov. Phil Murphy said there are limited reports of damage and "little to no injuries" in the state. The USGS recorded at least six aftershocks in the immediate area of the initial earthquake. In an area more than 30 miles from the epicenter, three neighboring homes in Newark were evacuated after residents reported structural damage, according to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé.
• New York: Gov. Kathy Hochul said there were no "life-threatening situations" after the earthquake and no reports of damaged buildings . There was one report of a gas line leak, but so far there's no “major” infrastructure impact, state officials said . New York City Mayor Eric Adams also said there have not been any reports of injuries and told people to " go about their normal day ." Additionally, all aspects of the New York City transit system were operating safely, said Metropolitan Transport Authority CEO Janno Lieber.
• Philadelphia: The Philadelphia Police Department received "over 200 calls" from 911 "in a very short period of 20 minutes," following the earthquake, according to Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel. But, there were no injuries reported in the city, Mayor Cherelle L. Parker said.
• Connecticut: State officials did not report any significant damage. Emergency management officials said their operations center was partially activated as agencies inspected key infrastructure points.
• Travel: Runways at the three main airports servicing the New York City area were inspected and cleared, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Port Authority also said there were no operational or physical impacts to the bridges and tunnels. Amtrak said its trains were r unning at normal speeds after restrictions were put in place for track inspections.
• Widespread impact: The shaking was felt by millions of people across hundreds of miles of the Northeast — a phenomenon made more likely by a few factors, including the geology of the region itself, according to the USGS. Rocks in the eastern US are much older, denser and harder, making them more efficient conduits of the seismic energy released by an earthquake, allowing it to travel in a more potent form over longer distances, the USGS says.

Amtrak trains resume running at normal speeds

Amtrak trains are back to operating at normal speeds after an earthquake in New Jersey on Friday, the company said.

It said it started inspecting its tracks shortly after 11 a.m. ET, and put speed restrictions in place throughout the region. Amtrak said it has now completed those inspections.

“As of 3:30 PM ET, All inspections have been completed and service has been restored to normal speed. Residual delays should be expected,” Amtrak  posted  on X.

At least 6 aftershocks recorded following New Jersey earthquake, USGS reports

There have been at least six aftershocks in the hours following the New Jersey earthquake Friday morning, according to United States Geological Survey data. 

The initial earthquake was felt in northern New Jersey just before 10:30 a.m. ET, and the aftershocks were all recorded in the immediate area of the earthquake, USGS said.

According to USGS, the largest of the six aftershocks was 2.2 magnitude, recorded just after 1:30 p.m. ET.

Here's a timeline (all times are ET):

• 10:23 a.m.: The initial 4.8 magnitude earthquake occurred
• 11:20 a.m.: 2.0 magnitude aftershock
• 11:37 a.m.: 1.8 magnitude aftershock

Three neighboring homes in Newark, New Jersey, have been evacuated after residents reported structural damage following this morning’s earthquake, according to the local public safety director. 

Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé told CNN no injuries have been reported after firefighters responded to reports of damage at the homes in an area more than 30 miles from the earthquake’s epicenter. 

He said 10 families were relocated from the buildings, including 25 adults and three children.

Fragé added that all Newark city buildings, including City Hall and recreation centers, are closed. He said the city is inspecting buildings for any potential damage and power outages. 

Also in New Jersey’s Essex County, in Montclair, officials believe the earthquake caused a water main break, according to an update from the Office of Emergency Management for the Township of Montclair. The OEM said the water bureau is working to repair the line. 

The Montclair OEM said authorities have conducted a damage assessment of the township and there are no signs of damage to the infrastructure and all schools and municipal properties report no damage.

Today's earthquake was the strongest in New Jersey in more than 240 years

The rare 4.8 earthquake that struck northern New Jersey Friday was the third-strongest to strike the state, according to CNN analysis of US Geological Survey data.

The Friday morning earthquake also marked the strongest since 1783, more than 240 years ago. Two 5.1 magnitude temblors are the only stronger quakes in the state — one in 1755 and another in 1783. Both happened before New Jersey became a state in December 1787, but happened in the geographic area that now comprises the state's boundaries.

The quake is the third-strongest to hit the Northeast in 50 years and the 10th-strongest of all time in the region, USGS data shows.

Earthquakes in New Jersey and the region are rare. There have only been 24 earthquakes of 2.5 magnitude or greater in New Jersey since 1700.

All aspects of New York City transit system operating safely after earthquake, MTA chief says

All aspects of the New York City transit system are operating safely following this morning’s earthquake, the Metropolitan Transport Authority, which runs the city's subway and other forms of public transit, said.

MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said every part of the transit system operated safely during the earthquake, as well.

He said initial facility inspections have been completed, including inspections of the seven bridges the MTA operate.

“I want to emphasize those were designed to withstand much stronger seismic impact than we experienced today,” he added.

According to the  MTA website , MTA Bridges and Tunnels (B&T) serves more than 900,000 vehicles on an average day. In 2019, it carried more traffic than any bridge and tunnel authority in the nation — more than 329 million vehicles, the MTA says. 

Lieber said MTA frontline staff have been directed to report any abnormalities in the system, but he said nothing had been flagged so far. 

There's a low likelihood of aftershocks following today's quake, New York City's emergency chief says

There is a low likelihood of aftershocks following Friday's 4.8 magnitude earthquake that rattled several Northeast cities, New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Zachary Iscol said. 

Iscol, however, urged New Yorkers to remain vigilant.

“If you are outside during an aftershock, please move to an open area, away from buildings, trees and power lines. If you are driving, pull over to a safe location," he said at a news conference Friday alongside New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Iscol said there were no major impacts or safety events related to the earthquake, and added that New Yorkers can call 311 to report any damage. 

The quake, he said, triggered the activation of the city's emergency response teams and prompted officials to issue guidance to the public. 

“We activated our protocols for this earthquake, we immediately began coordinating with all city, state, federal and our utility partners. Public notifications were sent out both by Notify NYC and our wireless emergency alert system,” he said.
