  • Unlocking Africa’s Majesty: Meet the Big Five Safari Icons

WRITTEN BY: Sean Messham

As a former guide in the Kruger National Park and Sabi Sand Nature Reserve (formerly known as a Game Reserve), the Big Five is without a doubt a metric many safari goers will use to describe or decide whether a game drive was successful or not. Of course, there’s a diverse array of animals like wild dog, cheetah, zebra, giraffe and a variety of impressive bird, insect and reptile species that add value – but for many seeing a member of the Big Five is vitally important.

Above Image: the Sand River pride resting in the Sand River by which they got their name, Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, South Africa. Taken by Marketing Manager, Sean Messham

But who are they, and why were they selected? Let’s get down to some of the basics of safari and unlock a little more understanding around these iconic species. And yes – help to confirm why they are so special to observe in their natural space. Because, at the end of the day, they are just incredibly special, majestic and more endangered than one might possibly consider.

Where did the Term “the Big Five” come from?

A little history, the term “Big Five” is actually a trophy hunting reference that was coined in the 19th century. It refers to the most prestigious and dangerous African animals to hunt while on foot, with each animal having its own unique challenge. The Big Five are, lion, leopard, African elephant, rhinoceros (both black and white) and the African buffalo.

safari icon black and red

Above Images: Kirkman’s Kamp in the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, eloquently touches on this history at the lodge. Once a cattle range, it is today one of the most prestigious game viewing destinations in the private reserve.

Today, the term is used in referring to seeing these wild animals in their natural habitat while on a safari game drive. And by going on safari in these protected reserves and National Parks, you are directly helping and contributing to the conservation and protection of these iconic African animals, and therefore, also the diverse ecosystems and habitats they live in.

What are Africa’s Big Five

  • Lion  (Panthera Leo)
  • Leopard ( Panthera pardus)
  • African Elephant ( Loxodonta africana)
  • African Buffalo ( Syncerus caffer)
  • Rhinoceros (black and white)

It is a sad reality that many of Africa’s wild spaces are facing continued pressure due to population expansion, human-wildlife conflict, illegal hunting and climate change. As a result, these iconic species are mostly in decline and their historical range is shrinking. As you will read in the numbers, this emphasizes the importance of tourism and supporting local communities to help contribute to the protection of the last remaining wild spaces. Read a brief introduction to each member of the Big Five and their current conservation status.

Segera Retreat, Laikipia Plateau, Kenya

1) Lion (Panthera Leo)

Your life will completely change once you see your first lion in the wild. Their obvious power, strength and endurance will leave you in awe of this impressive big cat. And once you learn about the hard lives they live to get to where they are, your respect for the most social of cats will only grow.

A lion pride at Royal Malewane, Timbavati, South Africa

They are also known for sleeping a lot. Some reference books will say they sleep 22 hours a day, however, I have watched lions move and hunt for longer than two hours. So I think this is an overstatement in general. Nevertheless, they prefer to conserve their energy. As a result, you might come across lions appearing ‘sleepy or lazy’. I encourage you to take out your binoculars, look at the details around their face, paws, notice the blood and scars on their body and then listen to the guides’ stories surrounding the pride or individual.

Lion sleeping, Sabi Sand Game Reserve, South Africa

When it comes to wild lion populations, unfortunately, the harsh reality is that in the past 25 years, wild lions have declined by more than half. Due to a complexity of social, political and environmental factors, it’s estimated that there are only 20,000 wild lions left on the African continent. For many who go on a safari, one would confidently expect to see these powerful cats. However, the situation described above puts into context just how fortunate you truly are to see them.

Where You Can See Them:

  • Kruger National Park – South Africa
  • Sabi Sand Nature Reserve – South Africa
  • Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem – Kenya and Tanzania
  • Ruaha National Park – Tanzania
  • Okavango Delta – Botswana
  • Hwange National Park – Zimbabwe
  • South Luangwa – Zambia

* This list is just to name a few destinations. There are of course many more, come chat to us.

2) Leopard ( Panthera pardus)

The elusive reputation and single-minded will of the leopard will capture the imagination of any empowered and confident individual. This rosetted cat moves through the African bush with stealth and prowess. And if you are lucky enough to view one, you’ll get a sense from them that they’re “just too beautiful and wonderfully perfect to worry about your concerns”.

safari icon black and red

Due to their secretive nature, the estimated numbers left in the wild are quite difficult to determine. Even with their status on the IUCN Red List being vulnerable, they are, however, arguably the most successful of the big cats with populations in a variety of habitats and even being spotted in and around city outskirts and towns surrounding the larger reserves.

safari icon black and red

I have been lucky enough to have seen leopards in most safari destinations, but I will still argue that the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve is possibly still the most consistent and reliable destination to observe and photograph these incredible cats. Through decades of collaboration with Panthera, a big cat conservation organization, many lodges in the Sabi Sands have gained incredible insights into the social and territorial structure of leopards. This scientific insight not only provides an unrivaled window into their social structure, but has helped design conservation strategies across the globe to better understand how we can protect and conserve this amazing cat.

3) African Elephant ( Loxodonta africana)

We all know that the African elephant is the largest land mammal on the planet, and that alone is a wonderful awe inspiring reason to want to see them in the wild. But after just five minutes of observing a herd, learning and understanding their matriarchal social structures and recognizing the evident family and individual connections they share. You will develop a deep appreciation and, dare I say it, emotional connection to these amazing animals.

Elephant herd approaching a waterhole in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

It is their remarkable intelligence and complex social bonds, akin to human connections, that arguably make their precarious position on Earth even more devastating. According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare , there are just 400,000 wild elephants left on the continent, with a decline of 8% a year! A third of the population in Zimbabwe and Kenya. With population expansion, human-wildlife conflict in rural areas is inevitable. Additionally, poaching to supply the illegal ivory trade has increased in recent years. Never before has tourism been more important to help protect this iconic animal. As t ourism plays a crucial role in providing economic incentives and financial support to local communities, some of which also face the additional challenge of their food crops being destroyed by roaming or migrating elephants.

safari icon black and red

As a result, we work closely with partners and organizations like the African Wildlife Foundation to help understand how we can best support ongoing conservation efforts and community development projects in areas that are affected. I encourage you, when you do go on safari, to visit the local rural communities in the area and learn first-hand how the lodges you stay at work with locals to help protect the elephant populations and mitigate the stress they might put on sustainable farming in some cases.

  • Amboseli National Park – Kenya
  • Tarangire National Park – Tanzania

4) African Buffalo ( Syncerus caffer)

To many, the African (Cape) buffalo is likely the least charismatic out of the Big Five. Especially when you view the lonely ‘dagga boys’ (old males) resting in the shallow river waters, busy chewing on their cud. They seem to be ruminating over possibly better times when they were the dominant males in the breeding herds.

Buffalo herd, Sabi sand Game Reserve, South Africa

However, their strength and obvious power cannot be ignored, particularly when encountering a herd ranging from 100 to thousands strong. When I was a guide, I thoroughly enjoyed placing our vehicle into a position to allow the herds to slowly graze past us. With the engine turned off you could hear the sounds of grunts, snorts, butting heads, moaning calves and hooves thumping into rich African soil. In time you would notice the cattle egrets behind their feet, catching and eating the insects disturbed in the grass. The oxpeckers jostling for position to ply ticks off the buffalo, or even sipping the blood from a recent wound.  All of this, coupled with their strong, distinct smell, gave me a sense of a healthy and optimistic ecosystem.

safari icon black and red

But do not be fooled by the tranquility of the game drive experience, nor the cattle like similarities in their behavior. These animals, weighing in at 900 kg, readily defend themselves if they feel threatened, charging at a rapid 35mph (56 km/h). If you are on foot, these are likely the animals you want to be most aware of.

  • Katavi National Park – Tanzania
  • Matetsi Victoria Falls – Zimbabwe
  • Mababe Depression – Botswana

5) Rhinoceros (Black and White)

As a South African, the crisis surrounding Africa’s rhino population is heart wrenching. Estimates indicate that only 29,000 rhinos remain in the wild, with over 70% of this population residing in South Africa . With the increase in poaching for the illegal rhino horn trade, it is fair to come to an opinion that this member of the Big Five will become increasingly more and more difficult to see.

safari icon black and red

Nevertheless, the commitment to protecting rhino populations has never been higher. The Kruger National Park (and surrounding reserves) has the largest remaining population of rhino. According to a 2022 report, over $61 million has been spent on protecting rhino populations in South Africa, with $37 million allocated to the Kruger between 2017 and 2021. In Zimbabwe’s Malilangwe Reserve, with the support of the Malilangwe Trust, the rhino population is increasing. There have also been incredibly successful projects to expand the rhino populations into Botswana and Rwanda from South Africa.

Given that this issue holds a special place in our hearts at Ubuntu Travel, we have designed conservation safaris for those who wish to travel and actively participate in protecting this species. Our very own Co-founder, Kyle Green , has played his role in numerous rhino dehorning experiences, which has helped reduce the incentive for rhinos to be poached.  Have a look at the video below.

  • Sabi Sand Game Reserve – South Africa
  • Phinda Private Game Reserve – South Africa
  • Lewa Wilderness – Kenya
  • Laikipia Region – Kenya
  • Etosha – Namibia

In conclusion, your enthusiastic journey to Africa, embarking on a safari to witness the majestic Big Five, becomes a meaningful contribution to the ongoing protection and conservation of these iconic African species. Furthermore, the Big Five are often referred to as keystone species, signifying that their protection is synonymous with safeguarding the wild ecosystems they inhabit. Thus, preserving the biodiversity and wealth of wildlife that renders the African continent so unique and special. Africa is waiting for you…

German frigate Hessen sailors were on watch 12 hours a day in the Red Sea with only seconds to react to threats in the 'worst case scenario'

  • A German warship that was part of a European Union security mission has left the Red Sea.
  • The frigate Hessen spent weeks in the Middle East protecting commercial ships from Houthi attacks.
  • Its sailors were on watch for 12 hours a day, Germany's military said on Monday.

Insider Today

Sailors aboard a German warship that was recently deployed to the Red Sea were on watch for 12 hours a day, and in the "worst" situations, they might've only had seconds to respond to the deadly Houthi threats endangering ships in these waters.

The Hessen, a Sachsen-class frigate, left the Red Sea and entered the Suez Canal on Saturday after spending nearly 60 days operating in Middle Eastern waters, Germany's military said Monday.

The warship was deployed to the region as part of the European Union's Operation Aspides security mission, which has been tasked with protecting commercial vessels sailing off the coast of Yemen from unrelenting Houthi missile and drone attacks.

Around 240 crew members aboard the Hessen were on "a permanent war march" during the mission, the German military said in a statement , according to a translation. These sailors were on guard for six hours, then had six hours off, and then went back on guard for another six hours.

"This very high state of readiness was due to the constant three-dimensional threat" that the Houthis posed to the ships in the area, the German military said. "In the worst case scenario, the ship and crew would only have had about ten seconds to bring their own defensive weapons into effect."

The short timeframe underscores how fast some of the Houthi threats are. One sailor aboard a US Navy warship that has engaged the rebels told Business Insider during a visit to the Red Sea earlier this year that their response time to an inbound threat could be anywhere from minutes to just seconds .

Related stories

Throughout its time in the area of operations, which included the strategic Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the Hessen repelled four Houthi attacks and escorted more than two dozen commercial ships through the volatile waters, Germany said.

In one noteworthy kill last month, a helicopter attached to the warship destroyed a Houthi surface drone after it was identified as a threat to civilian ships.

"This mission has demanded more from the ship and crew than ever before," the Hessen's Capt. Volker Kübsch said, adding that his warship "worked like clockwork and impressively demonstrated its combat value — right down to its ability to prevail in battle."

"Especially in combat situations, we were able to gain valuable, even unique experience not only for ourselves, but also for the entire German Navy and beyond," Kübsch added, highlighting how these engagements are a learning opportunity and a chance to test and improve capabilities. US Navy commanders have expressed similar thoughts on intercepts of anti-ship ballistic missiles .

While the Hessen's presence ultimately proved to be a valuable asset for the EU security mission, there was an incident at one point during the warship's deployment involving an allied asset.

In late-February, the Hessen accidentally targeted a US MQ-9 Reaper drone that was operating around the Red Sea and fired several missiles at the aircraft. A technical error in the warship's radar system, however, spared the American combat drone.

The Hessen is one of several European warships to see combat in the Red Sea this year, alongside the US Navy, which has had an aircraft carrier and multiple other warships stationed in the region since last fall. Beyond intercepting Houthi missiles and drones in the air, American forces, sometimes with partners, have also struck the rebels on the ground in Yemen.

The Hessen is due back to the German port city of Wilhelmshaven in early May. The gap it left in Operation Aspides is expected to be filled in early August by the Sachsen-class frigate Hamburg, Germany said.

Life and works

Though very few details of his life are known, tradition does give a basic outline. Andrei (commonly Andrew in English) went to a monastery, called Holy Trinity Monastery, at a young age and grew up there. He was greatly influenced by St Sergius of Radonezh , the igumen of the monastery.

Eventually Andrei decided to become a monk , and with the blessing of the new igumen of his monastery traveled to another, the Spaso-Andronikov Monastery , founded by St Andronik ( June 13 ). There he was tonsured a monk and began to study iconography under Theophanes the Greek and a monk named Daniel.

The first known reference to his work appeared in 1405, when he is said to have written icons and frescoes in the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Moscow with Theophanes and another iconographer named Prochorus. In 1408 he and Daniel, his fellow monastic, painted frescoes in the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir. Finally, he and Daniel were asked to paint the new church of Holy Trinity Monastery , where Andrei had grown up, after the monastery was destroyed by Tatars in 1408. This was about the time that he painted the only surviving icon credited as entirely his work - the Trinity , or Hospitality of Abraham .

Andrei Rublev reposed at Andronikov Monastery on January 29, 1430. He was one of nine saints glorified by the Church of Russia at its council held June 6 - 9 , 1988.

The Fedora Project is pleased to announce that the latest version of the Fedora Linux operating system, Fedora Linux 40,  is now generally available. For desktop systems, this release brings GNOME 46 and KDE Plasma 6 (with the Wayland graphics stack). It also features newly-integrated AI tooling, and updates to many software packages from the whole open source ecosystem. Don’t forget to ensure your system is fully up-to-date before upgrading from a previous release.

CentOS Stream 10 & RHEL 10 branch point

Fedora Linux 40 comes full of new features and changes. However, this Fedora Linux release is also notable as the branch point for CentOS Stream 10. CentOS Stream is the next major release of the rolling-release CentOS Stream distribution, which in turn becomes the foundation for the next major version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, RHEL 10. This means that the last few years of upstream innovation in Fedora will begin working their way downstream with the enterprise guarantee that RHEL is known for.

Introducing Fedora Atomic Desktops

Fedora Linux 40 returns a classic brand to its users, with a new twist: introducing Fedora Atomic Desktops! All rpm-ostree based variants of Fedora, including Silverblue, Kinoite, Sway and Budgie, will be grouped under the Fedora Atomic Desktops brand. The Sericea operating system is now known as Fedora Atomic Sway.

Bootable IoT containers

In Fedora Linux 40, you can now try out bootable IoT containers, a new way to build and deliver OS-tree content through cloud-native patterns.

AI advancements

Fedora Linux 40 now has two newly-integrated AI packages. PyTorch and ROCm 6 are now available in the latest release, allowing users to utilize a high demand machine learning framework that is widely used for image and speech recognition, natural language processing and other AI applications.

PyTorch provides a user-friendly interface for building and testing complex machine learning models. The current build enables CPU-based computation as a first step to making this important tool easier to access. Accelerator support is planned for future releases. ROCm 6 enables the newest flagship datacenter GPU, the AMD Instinct MI300, as well as previously enabled GPUs.

Porting to modern C

This release of Fedora includes a transition from an older C compiler to a more modern C stack. Programmers who use Fedora Linux 40 will have the benefit of clearer build fail error messages.

Individual, stable MAC address assignment for Wi-Fi

A new feature in F40 is the ability to assign a random but stable MAC address to a user's Wi-Fi connection, making it difficult for advertisers and network operators to track and gather data so our users can continue to experience stable, reliable connections to Wi-Fi without compromising their privacy.

Cloud Edition images now built with Kiwi

The Fedora Cloud Edition has moved its image generation tooling to use Kiwi. This brings Fedora and the Kiwi project closer together, forging a great working relationship between our Cloud working group and the upstream maintainers. In addition, using Kiwi to generate the cloud images will allow Fedora images to be built on many different platforms and distributions without needing to modify the runners, users can add their own defined script to the image generation and it supports multiple build types such as ISOs, raw disks and containers. Image building has never been more diverse and accessible as it is in Fedora Linux 40.

Feature Updates

New compilers and tools.

Both LLVM/Clang and the GNU toolchain have been updated to new versions, bringing users the latest features, improvements, security and bug fixes.

KDE Plasma 6

KDE Plasma has now been upgraded to version 6! This latest version includes upgrades to the mobile and desktop offerings and the stack is built on Qt 6, meaning significant upgrades to QML & Qt Quick and support for Vulkan.

The latest version of Podman is available in Fedora Linux 40! Users should be able to have an easier time maintaining container.conf files and a better CLI experience, to name a few benefits of this update.

Faster package updates

The DNF package manager now detects when full filelist metadata is required, and doesn’t download it otherwise. This saves time and reduces memory and CPU consumption.

Python 3.7 retiring

The Python 3.7 package is retired in this release, with the end of life date set for June 2024.

Fedora Linux 40 is available for  download now . If you’re already running Fedora Linux, follow the easy upgrade instructions. For more information on the new features in Fedora Linux 40, see the  release notes . If you run into a problem, visit the  Ask Fedora user support forum, which includes a category for  common issues .
