Sassnitz is a town in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in Germany , a seaside resort on Rügen that has been famous for centuries.

By train [ edit ], by bus [ edit ].

There is a bus link to/from the ferry port (for Sweden). If using the regular Sassnitz - Binz bus service for the ferry, the nearest stop is in Dubnitz (after the turning to the port, at the top of the hill, if travelling from the Binz direction). It will seem quite a long way from this stop to the terminal if you are backpacking!

Frequent buses to Binz and other Rügen towns. Beware that, on rural services, changing from one bus to another seems to be popular — the driver will announce "umsteigen (placename)".

  • Old part of the town . behind the north-eastern end of the harbour. The town is on cliffs above the harbour, there are steps down near the shops, or it can be approached through the old town. Walk past the shops (the sea should be on your right) and fork right downhill. Ferries to Sweden used to leave from the harbour here, but now use the modern port near Dubnitz known as "Fährhafen Sassnitz".
  • U-boot museum ( near the disused ferry terminal ). Perhaps surprisingly, the U-boat (submarine) on display is a former British submarine, H.M.S. Otus of the "Oberon" class, which was towed to Sassnitz after having been saved from a scrapyard in Portsmouth (GB).

Sassnitz Captivates With Its Ice Age Inspired Landscape

Sassnitz just out on the Jasmund Peninsula on the Baltic Sea . While it does have a “resort” feel to the place, it really is a place of some fantastic natural beauty. That it has a submarine (HMS Otus) in the water operating as a floating museum, is an extra added bonus!

The best thing about Sassnitz is that the old fishing port town is STILL an old fishing port town. It’s got that salt air flavor and small colorful fishing boats heading out for a hard day’s work. So important is the Baltic Sea, Sassnitz also has a marina and ferry port.

Of course there’s the Old Town, where you’ll find Town Hall. And out in the Dwasiedener Forest are the ruins of Schloss Dwasieden. It’s too bad about the castle; this fantastic sandstone and marble masterpiece was leveled by the communists in 1948.

— Top Areas Of Interest

  • Webcams (3)

What everyone really comes for is the Jasmund National Park and the chalk cliffs (the most famous section of the cliffs is known as the Königsstuhl , or King’s Chair). While it might be one of the smallest parks in the entire country as far as size; but, this park packs a whollop. Rare birds and plants are found within; and just after a storm is the best time to go fossil hunting.

Another type of “nature” site is the Alaris Butterfly Park where you see the little creatures flying around in a “tropical” setting. It only costs a few Euro and the kids are gonna love it.

The whole family will go crazy over all of Sassnitz’s festivals. There’s a Children’s Celebration at the Tierpark (animal park), a Midsummer’s Fire (a Swedish tradition, no less!), and the Main Street Celebration which is on the last weekend in June.

In the third weekend in July is the Sassnitz Sailing Celebration and the Rügener Port Days are the weekend beforehand. August brings on the Summer Celebration and no German town is worth its weight in (sea) salt without the obligatory Christmas Market — which in Sassnitz is on the 1st weekend of Advent on the Christian calendar (or, about 3-4 weeks before Christmas).

It won’t make a world of difference what calendar you use to plan your trip to Sassnitz, the Ice Age inspired landscape will leave you breathless and all the sites around town will leave you happy.

Navigation Route

Passengers selection, vehicle selection, navigation route inbound, guide of sassnitz.

Sassnitz is a seaside town in northern Germany; it lies just of the Baltic coast on an island called Rügen. Sassnitz has around 10,000 inhabitants, situated on Jasmund peninsula; it acts as the gateway to Jasmund National Park, an area characterized by unique white cliff formations.

A brief history of Sassnitz

Fishing has always been important to Sassnitz, and then the tourist industry began to arrive in the early 1800s, people who come to relax on the shores of the Baltic Sea during the summer. In 1871, the road to Sassnitz was upgraded, and in 1891 the town was connected to the railway network from Bergen. By 1878 boat services had been established, connecting Sassnitz with Stettin, Bornholm, Trelleborg and Klaipėda, this enabled the town to grow. The farming and fishing village of Crampas and Sassnitz were separate at one time, but it was decided to merge them to form one municipality of Sassnitz. Through the beginning of the 20th century Sassnitz's chalk, fishing and tourism industries expanded and given rights in 1957. They decided to construct a touristy beach promenade, but over the decades the town and its B&Bs fell increasingly into disrepair. In 1984 a new port was built to aid the ferry connection between East Germany and the Soviet Union. After 1991, the ferry port was redeveloped and began providing services to the entire Baltic Sea region.

Things to do in Sassnitz

The best thing to do in and around Sassnitz is walking and hiking in the Jasmund National Park. One of the best hikes is up to the Königsstuhl, or King's Chair, which is the best-known chalk cliff on the Stubbenkammer on the island of Rügen. It lies at 118 m above sea level, and there is also the Königsstuhl National Park Center which houses exhibits on Rügen's nature. There is also an observation deck that offers fantastic sea views. If you are feeling adventurous, then there are some fascinating castle ruins, abandoned factories and world war two bunkers to explore in Schloss Dwasieden, a couple of the bunkers have been left open - so you can explore with a flashlight at your own risk! There is also a path to access the beach, which is not crowded and very nice. Children and adults will also love a visit to the British Royal Navy submarine turned museum, Erlebniswelt U-Boot. Visitors can walk along the whole length of the submarine inside, or take a guided tour, and there is convenient parking nearby.

Beaches around Sassnitz

Hundestrand Glowe is nearby and is a beautiful sandy expanse, popular with dog walkers. Piratenbucht Sassnitz is close to the town centre and has rocks and sand, the water is clean, and there are plenty of establishments nearby for eating and drinking. Down the coast, a little further is Hundestrand Sellin, fully equipped with sunbeds and services. It has a beautiful little promenade and is pet-friendly.

Sail along the coast of Germany’s most beautiful island!

The traditional port town Sassnitz welcomes visitors between the rocky chalk cliffs and sandy beaches of Rügen island!

Its cobbled harbour was one of Germany’s main seaside resorts in the 19th century; today it’s a centre for arts and crafts. Sassnitz is well-known for its beautiful villas built in style of spa architecture. The town is a gateway to the nearby Jasmund National Park with its Ancient Beech Forests protected by UNESCO. An elegantly curved suspension bridge connects the centre with the town harbour where fishermen bring their catch ashore. Artisian workshops, ship chandlers and sail makers, museums and shops with regional products are to be found beside the island’s largest fish counter and charming sea food restaurants. The longest outer mole of Europe with its 1,444 metres across the Baltic Sea invites visitors to take a pleasant walk and enjoy the maritime atmosphere.

The lighthouse in Sassnitz on the island of Rügen on the Baltic Sea

The lighthouse in Sassnitz on the island of Rügen on the Baltic Sea

To the photo of the lighthouse in Sassnitz on the island of Rügen

The first picture of our road trip this year is the lighthouse in Sassnitz. I took the picture with the Samyang 16/2.0. To make the visitors disappear and to soften the sky and sea a bit, I used a combination of Haida filters in the 100mm system (Haida ND 1.2 Medium and Haida Red Diamond ND 1.8).

The photo of the lighthouse at Sassnitz harbor on the island of Rügen on the Baltic Sea captures the fascinating atmosphere of this striking coastal landmark. The beacon towers proudly over the harbor and gives the image a mysterious yet inviting aura.

The Sassnitz harbor on the island of Rügen is a lively place where fishing boats come and go and maritime activities take place. The beacon is an integral part of this maritime atmosphere and gives the harbor a special magic.

The photo of the lighthouse at Sassnitz harbor on the island of Rügen invites the viewer to put themselves in the scenery and feel the maritime atmosphere. It awakens the desire for adventure, for exploring the sea and for the allure of the coast.

The history of the Sassnitz lighthouse

The lighthouse in Sassnitz, also known as Dwasieden lighthouse, is a historic landmark on the Baltic Sea coast of the island of Rügen in Germany. With its striking architecture and important role in maritime history, the lighthouse has a fascinating history.

Construction of the lighthouse began in 1897 and was designed by the renowned German architect Karl Friedrich von Trepka. The construction was built on the Dwasieden cliff, which offers an impressive view of the Baltic Sea. The lighthouse was built of red brick in neo-gothic style and reaches a height of about 39 meters.

Since its completion in 1904, the lighthouse has played an important role in navigating ships along the Rügen coast. Its powerful light source, originally a gas lamp and later converted to electric lighting, served as a landmark for seafarers and helped them avoid dangerous spots. The lighthouse is visible up to 20 nautical miles, making it an important safety feature in the region.

Over the years, the lighthouse has undergone several technological improvements. In the 1920s, an optical system was installed that allowed more powerful and precise light guidance. In the 1970s the lighthouse was automated and the on-site staff reduced. Today the lighthouse is operated by the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration and is still an important part of the maritime infrastructure.

The Sassnitz beacon at the harbor as a tourist destination

The lighthouse in Sassnitz on the Baltic Sea coast of the island of Rügen is not only a striking building with a fascinating history, but also an important tourist destination. With its imposing appearance and breathtaking view, the lighthouse attracts numerous visitors every year.

A visit to the lighthouse in Sassnitz offers tourists a variety of experiences. Climbing the tower allows for an impressive panoramic view over the Baltic Sea, the surrounding cliffs and bays, and the picturesque coastal landscape. Especially during the golden hour or at sunset there is a unique backdrop for photographers and nature lovers.

In addition, the lighthouse in Sassnitz also offers the opportunity to learn more about maritime history and the importance of shipping in the region. In the exhibition rooms, visitors can discover historical artefacts, information about the development of navigation and lighting technology, as well as interesting facts about the role of the lighthouse in the safety of navigation.

The lighthouse in Sassnitz is also a popular starting point for hikes along the coast. The surrounding countryside offers a variety of hiking trails that lead visitors to the impressive chalk cliffs, picturesque bays and idyllic beaches. You can experience the untouched nature and the beauty of the Baltic Sea up close.

The lighthouse in Sassnitz is also an important starting point for boat trips and boat tours along the coast. Visitors have the opportunity to hop aboard and explore the shoreline from a new perspective. These excursions not only offer a unique view of the lighthouse itself, but also other sights and natural wonders along the coast.

Last but not least, the lighthouse in Sassnitz is also a symbol of the maritime identity of the region and a popular photo motif. Its imposing architecture, which stands out against the backdrop of the blue sea, attracts visitors from all over the world looking for unforgettable memories.

Overall, the lighthouse in Sassnitz is of great tourist importance. It offers visitors not only the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Baltic Sea coast, but also to immerse themselves in maritime history and discover the region from new perspectives. The lighthouse is a magnet for nature lovers, photographers and history buffs and helps make Sassnitz a popular travel destination along the Baltic Sea coast.

Leading lines in photography

Leading lines are an important design element in photography that serve to direct the viewer's gaze and create a certain dynamic and depth in an image. These lines can come in a variety of shapes and directions, such as straight, diagonal, curved, or curved, and serve to guide the viewer through the image and draw focus to specific elements.

Leading lines can appear in the natural environment or in architecture. Examples of this are roads, paths, fences, railings, rivers, building edges or even shadows. By cleverly placing these lines in the image, you can create a certain visual tension and give the image a spatial dimension.

The use of leading lines can serve different purposes. On the one hand, they can serve to direct the viewer to a certain main motif or an interesting point in the picture. For example, this can be a distant building, an interesting detail, or a person. The lines lead the viewer's gaze directly to this element, making it the visual focus.

In addition, leading lines can also help to create some movement or dynamism in the image. Diagonal lines or curved lines can convey a sense of speed, direction, or flow. They can add some energy to the image and tell a visual story.

Another benefit of using leading lines is that they can add some structure and order to the image. They can divide the image into different areas or layers and provide the viewer with a clear visual guide.

When composing an image, it is important to use the leading lines consciously and to consider their effect. It can be helpful to take time to explore the area and look for lines of interest before shooting. Sometimes it also requires a change of perspective or experimenting with different angles to create the desired lines in the image.

Overall, leading lines are a powerful design element that photographers can use to make their images visually appealing and captivating. By consciously paying attention to these lines and using them skilfully, you can achieve improved composition and take the viewer on a visual journey through the picture.

Bornholm – the Danes’ favourite Danish holiday destination

sassnitz tourist info

Right now winter’s harshness gradually gives way to the buds of spring, when the island comes back to life and nature starts to stir and grow, turning everything bright green.

In spring you can pick wild garlic to make pesto, take a walk among the white anemones that blanket the forest bed, or watch the water gushing from one of the island’s 14 waterfalls. Or grab a blanket and enjoy a tasty cup of coffee or lunch in the first warm rays of sun at one of the island’s many great cafés or restaurants.

Once you’ve been to Bornholm, you’ll want to come back again and again, because Bornholm steals your heart, and every season has its own charm.

Travelling to Bornholm is easy and fast by plane or ferry

Your holiday on Bornholm begins when boarding the ferry. The modern and direct ferry from Sassnitz on the German Island Rügen brings you quickly and safely to Bornholm in less than 3½ hours.

The ferry service starts on March 21st, and throughout the spring, there are three weekly departures, on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays (daily departures from Wednesday to Monday in the summer season).

A ferry ticket costs from 94 euros for a car + 5 people.

You can also travel by high-speed ferry from Ystad in Sweden – or take a flight from Copenhagen to Rønne on Bornholm.

Psst! Did you know that Bornholm is named one of Europe’s best holiday Islands by Conde Nast Traveler.
