10 Manitoba 'field trips' to take this spring and summer

Posted April 22, 2022 | Author Breanne Sewards

Do you remember the excitement you felt on field trip day? It was all about spending the entire day with your schoolmates, away from the usual classroom setting.

Keep the spirit of a field trip alive and plan to explore some of these educational or just plain fun sites throughout Manitoba. Whether you have kids or are embarking on a grown-up field trip, these 10 attractions will keep you entertained all spring and summer long!

Tour the Royal Canadian Mint

Fun facts abound on a guided tour at the Royal Canadian Mint . Get a behind-the-scenes look at all that's involved in manufacturing coins for Canada and countries around the world. You're guaranteed to learn something new and gain a new appreciation for the complex process of making coins.

Be inspired by the Nellie McClung Heritage Site

Walk in the footsteps of feminist, suffragette and reformist Nellie McClung at her former homes in Manitou, Manitoba . As the only homes of McClung that are open to visitors, you will have the unique opportunity to enter the space where she penned two books, many speeches and more. The museum is open seasonally from June to September.

Wander through the International Peace Gardens

A visit to the International Peace Garden combines learning with natural beauty. Wander through rows of gardens and blooms, or hike the trails and reflect at the 9-11 memorial. The Garden was created in 1932 as a symbol of the peaceful relationship between Canada and the United States. Please note: The Peace Garden sits on the border of Canada and the United States and you will enter through your respective port of entry. Because you will depart through customs you will need a Passport or government-issued ID with copy of birth certificate. Preferred: Passport or Nexus Card | Acceptable: Driver’s License with Birth Certificate | For Minors: Birth Certificate

Place a bet at the Assiniboia Downs

Experience the thrill of horse racing at the Assiniboia Downs . Whether you place a bet or just cheer on your favourite jockey and horse, you’re bound to feel the excitement of this competitive equestrian sport. The live racing season happens from May 23 to September 14, 2022 with free parking and admission.

Learn something new at the Manitoba Electrical Museum

Museums are a popular field trip destination for their endless learning opportunities. At the Manitoba Electrical Museum & Education Centre , take a look back on Manitoba’s electrical history - from the hydroelectric development of the province in 1870 to the technologies of today.

Explore Manitoba's history at the Signature Museums

For even more museum trips in Manitoba, you must add Signature Museums to your list. The organization contains seven incredible museums, each which brings a unique perspective on a piece of Manitoba's past. From prehistoric fossils and aviation history to agricultural stories and cultural relics, there's a wealth of information and fun to uncover at each of the seven museums.

Take a road trip to Portage la Prairie

For a mix of different activities, head to the city of Portage la Prairie . Start just outside of town with a visit to Fort la Reine to walk through over 25 heritage buildings before continuing onto something a little more active. Also in the area is Central Plains RecPlex , where you'll find a nine metre rock climbing wall, a nine-hole golf course and a bowling lane. Another option for active fun is Stride Place , home of Manitoba’s largest indoor wave pool, a zero-depth beach entry, hot tub, lazy river and a large indoor waterslide.

Cheer your heart out at a Goldeyes game

One of my fondest high school field trips was actually an annual trip to see a daytime Goldeyes game . There was nothing better than hanging out with friends, enjoying some tasty treats and watching the game. Today, a Goldeyes game is an excellent option for families as tickets remain affordable and accessible. Keep an eye on the 2022 schedule -- games start as early as May 13!

Combine learning and adventure at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre

For the ultimate field trip, head north to the Churchill Northern Studies Centre . This operational research facility hosts tourists, students and fellow scientists throughout the year and offers the opportunity to get up close to all the wonders of northern Canada. There are several learning vacations on the horizon, featuring the most popular visitor of the summer season...the beluga whale!

Embark on an art tour

Eastern Manitoba

Immerse yourself in the arts on the Boreal Shores Art Tour . This is your opportunity to see the creativity of Manitobans as you tour local artist's galleries along the east shore of Lake Winnipeg through to the Winnipeg River system and Whiteshell Provincial Park. The 2022 tour is scheduled for August 20 and 21

Outdoor Learning

Workshops for schools and daycares, quality programming that connects kids to nature, cpaws manitoba offers outdoor learning workshops and field trips to help children get outside and appreciate the wonders of nature..

The programming was developed by a former high school science teacher who has a decade of experience working with children and youth aged 5 to 18 as both a classroom teacher and a camp director.

Programming will be FREE for daycares and daycamps during the pilot period of July and August 2021.

This nature-based programming is mindfully designed for children ages 5-12 by an experienced classroom teacher and university students. We also have preschool programming available for ages 2-4.

Our summer offerings include:

  • Nature scavenger hunt and craft (age 5-12)

Workshops are delivered by:

  • Environmental Educator Avery Kash , a certified teacher and yoga instructor.
  • Alyssa Ragbirsingh, an education student at the University of Manitoba specializing in geography.
  • Claire Templin, who is pursuing her masters degree in speech and language pathology at the University of Toronto .

Programming is available Tuesday to Thursday 9am to 3pm and Fridays 9am to 12pm .

To book your program, email [email protected] with your top 3 dates, available times and requested program(s) .

Summer Program Offerings 2021

Nature mindfulness.

Imagine yourself on a peaceful canoe trip, dipping your paddle into the still water as you listen to birds singing in the distance.

In this program, children will take a journey through the natural world through storytelling, breathing and mindful movement.

Children take part in a sensory nature walk where they are encouraged to use their senses to take in and explore the world around them.

We finish with mindfulness-based games.

We recommend this program to children aged 5-12.

All About Plants

Let’s get curious about plants!

Children have an opportunity to explore the plants and soils in their greenspace as they investigate what plants need to grow.

They will learn about native Manitoba plants through a variety of games and activities.

They will plant a seed to take home with them to care for and watch it grow!

We recommend this program for children aged 5-12.

child takes notes during nature walk

Scavenger Hunt

Let’s explore your local greenspace!

Children will move through an age-appropriate CPAWS-style scavenger hunt as they notice and collect things found in nature.

They will have an opportunity to share their findings as they explore the interconnectedness of the natural world.

Students will also create their own mini compostable origami seed pots! Together we will add soil and plant a seed.

Alternatively, our younger explorers will create their very own brightly coloured dragonfly to display in the garden!

Animals of Manitoba

Here at CPAWS we love learning about animals!

Through a variety of exciting games and activities, students will learn about Manitoba animals and what they need to survive and thrive!

Children will create their own animal- related craft while also working collaboratively to create a bird feeder that can be hung outside your facility.

Nature Journaling

Children will be given their very own copy of a CPAWS-style nature journal where they can explore, observe and remember unique findings in our outdoor spaces.

Together we will design our own nature journal covers, create leaf rubbings, look for bugs and return nature back to its home when finished.

The coolest part? Our nature journals are filled with additional activities the children can do on their own or with friends!

We recommend this program for children aged 8-12.

Preschool Programming: Little Explorers

Our preschool program is designed for our little explorers!

Together we will search through a CPAWS-style scavenger hunt as they notice and collect things found in nature.

Games and crafts are also a MUST with little ones as we begin to learn more about the world around us!

We recommend this program for children aged 2-5.

Safety Protocols

Cpaws manitoba takes the safety of all program participants seriously..

All CPAWS Manitoba staff members have cleared a criminal record and vulnerable sector background check with the Winnipeg Police Department.

CPAWS Manitoba staff members voluntarily disclose that they have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. We adhere to all public health recommendations and guidelines.

CPAWS policy requires that at least one person leading programming which may involve children must be certified in first aid. This applies to staff or to volunteers.

How Does Spending Time Outdoors Improve Our Well-Being?

There is a wide array of evidence that shows spending time in nature improves mental and physical health, boosts immunity and reduces risk of disease..

Connecting with the natural world has also been shown to improve sleep and augment vitamin D levels. And it boosts endorphin levels and dopamine production, which promotes happiness.

Healthy forests, lakes and wetlands are also working to protect our physical health even when we’re not out in nature. They clean our air, filter our water and act as a protective shield against the worsening impacts of climate change .

This programming was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Government of Manitoba's Safe At Home Manitoba program, The Winnipeg Foundation and The Conservation Trust, a Manitoba Climate and Green Plan Initiative delivered by the Manitoba Habitat Heritage Corporation.

Summer programming is available from July 2, 2024 through August 23, 2024.

Download our brochure to learn more.

Take Flight!

Our Take Flight! programs are curriculum-based and focused on STEM topics.

All programs include hands-on activities appropriate for the age group and touch on curriculum points for each grade level. We offer 12 STEM-based programs suitable for grades 2 through 12. We work with teachers to tailor or emphasize aspects of learning outcomes as needed.

The programs listed below are available from September through June.

Using building bricks, create a vehicle with wheels and axles. Explore position and motion through a high energy demonstration and an engaging activity. While on tour, learn how airplanes go and stop and leave with a thorough understanding of motion.

In this investigation, students play the role of scientists and STEM engineers in examining the physics of popular toys on Earth and space. In a unique, hands-on toy build, students will try to answer the question: Will this toy work in microgravity?

Students will learn about the properties of air, Bernoulli’s Principle, weather fronts, public weather reports, and weather’s affect on aircraft. In the classroom, we will have fun building a simple weather instrument.

Through exploration of our immersive ‘Science of Flight’ exhibit, while on tour, and through our expert flight presentation, students will learn about the four forces of flight, Bernoulli’s Principle, aircraft classification, and most importantly, how wings work.

Students will be a team of manufacturing engineers who will be given the challenge of designing the smallest, lightest package possible using everyday materials.

Students will conduct and test a gravity assist device in three challenges learning about Newton’s three laws and the design engineering process.

Student teams will design, construct, and test a model Orion capsule design using scientific inquiry and the design engineering process.

Student teams will design,  construct and test a model spacesuit through various challenges using Scientific Inquiry and the engineering design process to protect astronaut Mark Whatney’s spacesuit from damage. Lesson inspired by the movie The Martian.

Students will design an environmentally friendly “green” spacecraft propellant. They will then test their propellant using a variety of surface areas, solid fuel and temperatures of liquid fuel, measuring the thrust produced.

Students will learn how drag affects acceleration and distance through the construction and testing of a rocket using the design engineering process.

‘This is the best field trip ever’

Lord selkirk school division outdoor classroom revived, renewed after two-decade absence.

A forgotten field trip site near Albert Beach is being revitalized to host land-based lessons in the Lord Selkirk School Division — the unlikely owners of the 51-acre lot — and student visitors from all over Manitoba.

Albert Beach Trail encompasses a 1.1-kilometre pathway that winds through a mature boreal forest and an open activity area located beside its cottage community namesake. The boggy woodlands are home to one of the largest standing birch tree populations in the province.

“No other school division owns a piece of property like this,” said retiree Ken Avery, who sat on the school board for 30 years. “It’s a jewel within their division.”

The longtime trustee, who left his post last year, advocated for the site’s renewal while it sat empty and unpruned for years as its upkeep was overlooked, and funds and resources were directed elsewhere.

Developers expressed interest in purchasing the vacant lot, but he said the board never seriously entertained selling it. As far as Avery’s concerned, the destination has always had the potential to become the FortWhyte Alive of Manitoba’s East Beaches.

Earlier this month, after roughly two decades of the space sitting dormant, Jodi Forfar organized the first student hike and scavenger hunt on the newly groomed grounds.

Twenty-eight middle schoolers were sent out with whiteboards and tablets, and tasked with taking notes, snapping photos and using plant-identification apps to record their findings. They left with a newfound understanding of moss, ferns and Labrador tea, among other species.

“I heard kids saying, ‘This is awesome, this is the best field trip ever’ — and to me, that justified all the hard work that we’ve been doing over the last several years,” said Forfar, a science teacher at Lockport School.

Forfar has been involved in the revitalization project since it got underway in 2015.

The self-described outdoor education enthusiast was tapped to oversee the committee in charge of its comeback, which was sparked by then-superintendent Scott Kwasnitza, because of her hand in building an open-air classroom at her junior high. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted and delayed reopening of the site.

As of this year, the new trail and a picnic shelter are accessible via 55 Christopher Rd., located about 100 km north of the Perimeter Highway. The area is free for community use.

The lot was originally transferred to the Selkirk-based district when it was created in 1967, as a result of an amalgamation of independent and public schools in the region.

In 1981, a teacher-led outdoor education association received approval to create a camp in the forested area. The following year, volunteers built a main lodge and the first of a series of cabins that were frequented by staff and students until they were deemed unsafe in 2005.

“The architects decided that the buildings weren’t safe because it wasn’t certified lumber. The lumber used was rough lumber,” recalled Bob Jesson, a retired principal who serves on the school board. “I was disappointed that we had to shut it down.”

Jesson used to take staff and students up to the area for overnight trips. The groups played games, completed a “fitness trail” and in the winter, built quinzees, he said, adding the outings were a school-year highlight for students and staff alike.

For Forfar, the Oct. 13 “maiden voyage” was yet another reminder of how valuable spending time in nature is for students’ physical and mental health.

“There’s ‘nature deprivation’ for some students that don’t get opportunities to be out in outdoor settings like this, so providing those opportunities and having it accessible for everyone is important,” Forfar said.

Members of the school division’s maintenance crew cleaned up the trail and marked it as part of the first phase of the renewal project. The second stage involved levelling a large activity area, bringing in gravel and setting up infrastructure, including a wheelchair-accessible picnic table, to facilitate day trips.

A grand opening is anticipated in the spring, after which Forfar said she wants to invite colleagues to start taking field trips year-round and facilitating land-based lessons with support from Indigenous teachers and local elders.

“We are so lucky that we have an abundance of birch trees, so we have quite a bit of (what we call) ‘the king of medicines,’” said Jacqueline Bercier, a Métis-Anishinaabe educator who oversees the division’s cultural perspectives and languages programs.

Not only will visitors be able to go on medicine walks and harvest plants, but they will also be able to participate in teachings about species ranging from wild mint to sweetgrass, Bercier said.

“We want (both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students) to be more in connection with the land,” she said. “The trail is broken up enough so you have to slow down.”

Bercier added she hopes they will eventually be able to construct a teepee and sweat lodge on the grounds.

The long-term plan also involves rebuilding overnight cabins around the trail and hosting local children and students from neighbouring districts for overnight trips.
