The Benefits of Student Travel Group

The Benefits of Student Travel Group

Students today travel all of the time. Maybe it’s the sports team or band and choir traveling, but these are traveling groups. Their travel may not be under the heading of a travel club, but nonetheless they are traveling. Riding on chartered coaches, overnighting in hotels, eating meals on the road and visiting attractions, all while chaperoned by school personnel, can be a rewarding experience.

A school travel club can level the playing field or students who are not athletically or musically inclined. Maybe a student simply has an interest in history or science, or maybe vocations such as the trades or farming. Perhaps these same students would love the opportunity to travel to a new place, visit historical sites that they read about in a textbook, research architecture beyond their community or discover new farming methods in diffe ent regions of the country or world—the educational possibilities are endless.

Student Travel Clubs Build Social and Emotional Confidence

A travel club is a unique learning experience. The best clubs are those that encourage all to join, offer uniqu and interesting destinations that span a wide variety of interests and allow peers to budget and raise funds necessary for the trip. All of these learning tools build confidence and einforce positive social emotional behavior. Students will learn about themselves, others and the world beyond their doors. A travel club may even be a motivator for a student who is academically challenged. Academic success can be linked to student depression or even isolation. Students who feel either of these emotions may not see the reason for taking their education seriously. They fall behind because they do not feel connected. A travel club inherently builds connections which can help alleviate depression and the feeling of isolation.

Consider a Services Learning- Based Student Travel Club

There are many reasons why educators may want to start a student travel club in their community, with many of the reasons why schools should support such an endeavor already discussed in this article. Another lens for student travel is focusing on a service- based student travel club. In a recent interview with Ida Fiore, science teacher at Northwoods Junior High School in the Chicago suburbs, and cofounder of SaLT, she offers the ollowing: “A service-learning-based club combined with travel experiences to other communities can be a powerful catalyst in changing students’ lives. A service-learning club prepares students to understand why specific needs xist and how their acts of service will make a diffe ence.

Students are challenged to learn empathy – not sympathy – for others as their service efforts becom a part of the greater good in this world. Students show growth in personal acts of compassion and words of gratitude as they create a ripple effect. hey are, in fact, changing the world by changing their world. When quality service-learning takes place, everyone benefits. “However, all of these dynamics are enhanced even further when travel to other communities is introduced. The SaLT (Service and Learning Together) organization, based in the northern suburbs of Chicago, does just this. Not only do students engage in local service projects throughout the Chicagoland area, they truly make this world a better place, one connection at a time.”

Starting a service club may be a way that educators can approach the idea of a student travel club within their school. Travel can begin close to home, servicing local needs and perhaps branch out to other destinations, serving communities across the country and beyond.

Student Travel Clubs as Vocational Training.

student travel club could also serve as vocation training in the tourism industry. Many cities, states and countries list tourism as the second- or third-largest contributor to their economy. Ask any student in 8th -12th grade about today’s top industries, as I have, and less than one percent will respond with tourism. They don’t really know it exists. A student travel club can open their eyes to this robust part of most of the world’s economies. An introduction to the industry, let’s call it Tourism 101, should be a part of every student travel club member’s orientation.

20 Activities for the Travel-Curious Classroom

A list of culture-boosting activities for a classroom or travel club.

20 Activities for the travel-curious classroom

You’ve assigned the translation worksheets and the what-did-you-do-over-holiday-break essays. And it’s great because you’ve got them thinking about life in other parts of the world. But what’s next? If you’re like us at EF Tours , you’re constantly on the hunt for ways to bring students closer to the world at large. That’s why we thought a list of culture-boosting activities could be really helpful in a classroom, or for a travel club.

Grab a copy of the EF Journal

We hear great stories, tips, and insights from within our community of travelers, educators, and wanderers nearly every day. So, we’re sharing them with the world: cue the EF Journal . Within its pages, you can find fresh perspectives, fun activities, discussion topics, and more .

Do a Google Earth scavenger hunt

Exploring the world can start in the classroom. Find the coordinates for the world’s greatest wonders and hidden gems, then task your students with finding them on Google Earth , a free resource by Google that allows users to explore the world via satellite imagery. You can spice it up by including initial coordinates and some directions (move two blocks and then take a right), then asking them to describe the exciting new place they’ve discovered.

Host a music video watch party

Music aficionados, rejoice! Bring your favorite foreign language music videos, crowdsource some from your group, and have a music video marathon. Bonus points if your video includes elaborate dance routines  to practice.

Lead a lesson on body language from around the world

We all know that different parts of the world speak different languages . But what we might forget is that the body language and gestures we use each day may have different meanings when we’re abroad, and vice versa. With a quick Google search , you can find out how body language is used around the world—and practice nonverbal communication with your students.

Play geography trivia

Play into your students’ competitive spirit with a little travel trivia—find some questions online, or make some of your own. Either way, a little competition never hurt anyone, right?

Hold an international flavor taste-test

Seaweed potato chips. Green Tea Kit Kats. Melon Fanta. The world is wide and the combinations of national treasures with unique international flavors are endless. Lucky for your students, many of these oddball flavors can be ordered online . Just get a unique assortment of flavored snacks and test them out—Oreos are a good place to start since they come in a variety of flavors, they’re low-cost and easy to order online, and frankly, universally loved.

Try a suitcase challenge

Put your packing  skills to the test. Tightly pack a suitcase with funny items, then time your students on how quickly they can unpack and then re-pack it themselves. To keep it interesting, keep a scoreboard or play for small prizes.

Have a Carnival celebration

Carnival: It’s feathers, not Ferris wheels; costumes, not corn dogs; brass bands, not bumpy rides. It’s an annual festival of dancing, masks, and parades that is celebrated in over 20 countries around the world, including Brazil , Italy, and Jamaica—and now in your classroom. Explore the importance of Carnival in various regions and maybe have celebration of your own.

Need more ideas? Here are a few to get you started.

  • Do a local photography challenge
  • Have a souvenir show and tell
  • Lead an origami lesson
  • Take a group cooking class
  • Watch a foreign language TV show
  • Try a local foreign restaurant
  • Pair up with pen pals
  • Explore the Guggenheim, virtually
  • Create travel bucket lists
  • Have a Chinese New Year celebration
  • Watch a themed documentary as a group
  • Hold a Día de los Muertos celebration

The LUSC High School Travel program runs every year in the spring and fall. Teams play other clubs in Boston Area Youth Soccer (BAYS), an organization that includes nearly 60 clubs in eastern Massachusetts. Each week has one weekday practice and a Sunday game .

This program is open to Lexington 9th-12th graders.

High school players interested in further developing their soccer and leadership skills are encouraged to check out the Lexington Player Development Academy and the High School Mentor Program .

Spring 2024 Information

Uniform orders placed after Mar 1st will not arrive before the start of the season.

These teams will play in the Boston Area Youth Soccer (BAYS) league Division 3, which uses the 7v7 game format on 9v9-sized fields. LUSC will field an appropriate number of teams depending on the number of registrants. There are no evaluations.

Schedule: Each week will have one weekday practice and a Sunday game.

Uniform: Players are required to wear the official jersey, shorts and socks to all games. They are also required to have a LUSC pinnie for practices. Please note: In Spring of 23, ALL PLAYERS were required to purchase a new kit. Prior players who did not play last spring or fall will also need to buy a new kit.

Players who are 18 or will turn 18 during the season are required by Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association to complete the adult athlete SafeSport course in order to participate.

Registration

All players who register for travel by the registration deadline will be accommodated. After the deadline, placement cannot be guaranteed, and will depend on team sizes. Players who cannot be accommodated may choose to play LUSC in-town soccer, for those age groups where it is offered.

Like all of our LUSC BAYS offerings, we rely on volunteer coaches to make this happen. We will need a coach or two for each team. We would appreciate a volunteer for the boys and for the girls who would be willing to work with a LUSC representative to help place teams in the appropriate divisions.

Are kids clubs safe? How to spot trouble on a cruise ship or resort

I distinctly remember the first few times I dropped my daughter off at a kids club while on vacation. One of those times was during a cruise on the Disney Dream , when my husband and I sent her to the kids club so we could enjoy dinner at Palo, the ship's fancy restaurant for adults . I placed the ship's Wave Phone on the table next to me, so I could be ready to spring into action if she was unhappy at the club. But no cry for help ever came, and when we went to pick her up, we found a smiling six-year-old with a sparkly, face-painted outline of a pirate patch around her eye.

As parents, that’s the kind of experience we want our kids to have with resort and cruise ship clubs for kids and teens – one where they’re happy and kept safe by the adults in charge. But when stories hit the news about inappropriate or illegal behavior by staff members , it might give us pause.

BEST KIDS CLUBS: 11 all-inclusive resorts with kids clubs that go above and beyond

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Those stories tend to be the exception to the rule, but even so, there are some things parents can do to keep their kids as safe as possible when taking advantage of a resort or cruise kids club. Follow these tips, and your kids and teens should enjoy fun adventures with their peers while you get some time for a workout, spa treatment, grown-up meal, or even a nap.

1. Do your research

Before booking a resort or cruise, go online to explore what’s offered when it comes to kid-focused amenities and what others have to say about the kids’ and teen clubs. If a resort or particular cruise seems like a good option, reach out to staff with some questions ahead of time to confirm your decision.

"Parents can ask the cruise line or resort about their background check and screening procedures for staff who work with children," says Susan Kennedy, director of community engagement for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). "What is their process for screening employees at time of hire, and how often are these checks repeated for existing employees?"

Another area for parents to inquire about? "Ask about their child safety and child sexual abuse prevention procedures, including how staff are trained on them, how they monitor and enforce these policies, and what are their policies related to reporting suspected child abuse," says Kennedy.

  • What happens when your kid doesn’t want to go to the kids club?

2. Take a tour

Disney Cruise Line guests can tour the kids club and teen spaces on Embarkation Day. If your resort or cruise line doesn’t offer an opportunity like this, ask for a tour. “It really puts your mind at ease to see the club for yourself, walk around it with your kids, and understand what kinds of things they’ll be doing, along with meeting the staff,” says Evan Porter, author of the blog Dad Fixes Everything and the upcoming novel “Dad Camp,” who recently took a Disney Cruise with his two daughters.

BOOKS FOR KIDS: 33 books like Harry Potter to binge on vacation

Be on the lookout to make sure the space is secure (so your kiddo can’t escape) and ask about the policies for drop-off and pickup. "Disney uses MagicBands to keep track of kids' locations, has only one entry/exit, and uses a secret-word system to ensure the right people are picking up," says Porter. "I would be really wary, especially with my three-year-old, if a club had many places where she could wander off — because she absolutely will if she can!"

If your cruise or resort doesn’t have technology like Disney Cruise Line, or your child doesn’t have a cell phone yet, ask the staff how your kid can get in touch with you if needed while at the kids club. And take note of how the resort or cruise ship separates kids of different ages. "Keep in mind that sometimes children are sexually abused by older children, so ask the staff about how they make sure groups of children are monitored closely, especially in multi-age settings," Kennedy advises.

3. Trust your instincts

If you check out the kids club and something just doesn’t feel right to you, it’s probably a good idea to skip it for this trip. "Ultimately, our decision to leave our child in the club depends on how comfortable they feel in the environment," says Echo Wang, CEO and founder of the blog Cool Travel Vibes . "If there’s any hesitation or apprehension, we explore other activities together."

4. Set some ground rules

When Eileen Wolejsza, owner and travel advisor at Eileen's Escapes and a member of the American Society of Travel Advisors, travels with her two teenage boys, they can enjoy some freedom if they stick together. "When we go on family cruises, I always review with them beforehand how imperative it is that they stay together when they’re not with my husband or myself," she says. "If only one wants to go to the teen club and the other wants to hang at the arcade, then they must compromise. Together they spend some time at the club, and then together they play at the arcade."

SAVE MONEY: Kids stay free at these 10 all-inclusive family resorts

A little independence is great, but it’s important for kids to not get too friendly with adults they might encounter on vacation. "I make sure my kids know that even though they have freedom walking around the ship, they must still remember that the people they meet are strangers," says Wolejsza. "They know to never divulge private information about where they live (like their street address) or their phone number or name of their school, especially if an adult was talking to them and asking them things."

Going to someone else’s room or cabin should also be off limits for teens and older kids. "Of course I want them to feel comfortable meeting other kids, but I have a discussion about not going into anybody else’s cabin or bringing anyone back to our cabin," she says. "I remind them that at home you wouldn’t go inside a stranger’s house, so this is the same thing."

NCMEC offers a variety of resources to help parents talk with young children about safety and personal boundaries before the vacation begins. They’re helpful tools for parents to have discussions with young children about safe interactions with others, and things to look out for as they interact with adults while on vacation.

SUN AND SAND: 11 best all-inclusive beach resorts in the world

"For teens, it is a good idea to review any family rules and expectations about checking in with you during your time apart, and to let them know that they also can contact you at any time for help and support if anyone makes them uncomfortable or if they do not feel safe in the teen club," advises Kennedy.

5. Tap into technology

Attaching an Apple AirTag onto your child’s shoe, strapping a GPS tracking watch around their wrist, or using a cell phone app like Life360 can help you stay aware of your kid's location while also enjoying a little alone time.

"To ease my own anxiety when I’m not with my son, especially in crowded areas, I find peace of mind in using a tracking device," says Wang. "It’s just another layer of precaution to ensure our child’s safety while allowing them to enjoy their vacation experiences."

Hong kong data show a surge in travel to china.

school travel club

Hong Kong became a ghost town during the Easter holiday as residents made a record number of trips out of town — particularly to mainland China — leaving bar strips and shopping hotspots empty.

A total of 9.3 million departures from the territory of 7.3 million people occurred last month. It was the single-highest monthly number since at least 1997, government data showed.

The exodus continued through the four-day Easter holiday that ended on Monday, when total Hong Kong resident departures for Macau and mainland China was 10 percent higher than in 2019, the data showed.

This year’s Easter tourist arrivals in Hong Kong from mainland China and Macau plunged 46 percent from the 2019 period.

The great departure underscores the challenges facing the once vibrant financial center that has seen a large swath of its professional workers relocate to other countries, a diminished entertainment sector and soaring prices.

The record outflow was largely the result of people heading across the border to the mainland and Macau, where they can enjoy cheaper and a larger variety of entertainment, food and shopping.

Hong Kong residents last month made 8.3 million departures via border checkpoints — another record since at least 1997 — typically used to travel to the rest of China.

Hong Kong is increasingly losing out to nearby Chinese cities including tech hub Shenzhen and casino town Macau as a high-speed rail and a mega cross-sea bridge make cross-border travel faster and easier than ever before.

The financial center is struggling to maintain its appeal in the face of an economic slowdown and weaker yuan.

High Hong Kong rents and limited entertainment offerings — from restaurants to shopping — have pushed up prices and reduced residents’ choices.

Local bars and restaurants are struggling to stay afloat. Dining-in business over the Easter holiday was estimated to have fallen by as much as 40 percent from a year earlier, Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades president Simon Wong (黃家和) said on a local radio program on Monday.

A Facebook group about Hong Kong stores shutting down has attracted 186,000 members, with users posting photographs of shuttered outlets, empty shops and going-out-of business announcements.

Even Hong Kong’s tycoon-owned supermarket chains, such as CK Hutchison Holdings Ltd’s (長江和記實業) ParknShop and Jardine Matheson Holdings Ltd’s (怡和控股) Wellcome, are facing increasing pressure as they rework strategies to provide people with more choices.

State-owned conglomerates China Resources Holdings Co (華潤集團) and Dah Chong Hong Holdings Ltd (大昌行集團) — the territory’s biggest food and fast-moving consumer goods distributors — have closed dozens of grocery stores in the past few months.

Travel agencies operating tours to the mainland, on the other hand, are experiencing booming business. Over the Easter holiday, the number of Hong Kong residents signing up for tour groups to other Chinese cities rose three-fold from a year earlier, EGL Tours Co (東瀛遊旅行社) executive director Steve Huen (禤國全) said.

The team won the state championship and is the only team from Nevada to be invited to the World Festival in Houston. Rotary Club members donated $3,000 to help defray travel expenses.

The team, called the Metallic Eagles, is a mix of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. Every year, FIRST Robotics provides a theme and gameboard. This year the theme focused on the arts and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math).

The students were asked to identify how they could use STEAM to help others do the things that they love to do. The World LEGO Robotics takes place April 17-20.
