Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep Waterfall are two incredible waterfalls in the north of Lombok. The waterfalls are located in the town of Senaru, which is the area most people stay in before trekking to Mount. Rinjani . My friends and I stayed in Senaru for one full day before the trek and enjoyed a sunrise over the rice fields and then visited Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep Waterfall.

How to get to Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep Waterfall

Senaru is in the North of Lombok . This is a small town most trekkers base themselves in before and after their trekking adventures. I arrived in Lombok via ferry and headed straight north with three other friends. You have a few options from the dock to get to Senaru.

Tiu Kelep waterfall is located in the village of Senaru in North Lombok, Indonesia, and can be reached by renting a motorbike or hiring a driver. From Mataram city, it takes about a 2.5-hour drive to reach Senaru village. Once you arrive in Senaru, you will need to park your vehicle and pay an entrance fee at the ticket booth. From there, you can follow the well-marked trail that takes you through lush forests and across a river to reach the waterfall.

Sunrise in Senaru

There are two reasons you should wake up early on this waterfall adventure day, which are sunrise and lighting. We headed down towards the waterfall sign and ended up finding a spot within a few hundred meters to check out the sunrise. Tiered rice fields slowly lit up as we chilled on the side of the road happy with our start to the day. The lighting is something to consider when shooting waterfalls.

Although both waterfalls are pretty well protected from the sun you will get some light, especially on Sendang Gile during the day. That’s why we were keen to make sure we had a shady waterfall to shoot.

Sendang Gile Waterfall (Air Terjun Sendang Gile)

I knew about Tiu Kelep before I came to Lombok and was stoked to go explore it but I didn’t know there was going to be another amazing waterfall along the way. Sendang Gile was a huge bonus to the day trip. The path to Tiu Kelep takes you straight past Sendang Gile so you can’t miss it.

Sendang Gile is impressive in its own right. It’s a two-tiered waterfall with massive force and although it wasn’t even on my original radar for things to do in Lombok, I think it’s one of the best waterfalls on Lombok that I visited.

We hung out here for about an hour, even crossing the river to get underneath the waterfall. GoPro is a good option here because the mist and sprays from the gushing water got my Sony A7ii pretty wet.

It was October when we visited and there was no one else at the falls. This was our experience all over Lombok for the most part. It seems like this waterfall could be busy in peak season because there were lots of empty huts at the base of the falls, which I assume are full of coconuts and snacks on a busy day.

Tiu Kelep Waterfall

After you finish adventuring at Sendang Gile waterfall it’s time to get back on the path and continue heading towards the big attraction of the day. The dirt trail leads you along the side of the river before it requires you to make a few crossings. Finally, you may have to actually walk through the river in cold, ankle-deep water. Water shoes or flip-flops will be fine but it does get incredibly slipper and we all had quite a few falls.

What are my favorite pieces of gear for waterfall adventures?

There are four pieces of gear that I simply never forget when I go on a waterfall adventure . These are four items that I using right now and this list gets updated every year! Here are my waterfall adventure essentials.

Tiu Kelep is a waterfall I knew about because it’s not one you forget when you see it posted online all the time. It’s an epic amphitheater with one of the most dramatic falls I’ve seen in Indonesia. As soon as I turned the last corner and laid my eyes on Tiu Kelep, I was pretty overwhelmed, to say the least.

Water flows down, seemingly through the wall, only to be upstaged by a forceful flow of water that streaks diagonally across the falls. Vines have taken over the rock walls and we felt like deep-jungle explorers despite only having to walk for 30 minutes to reach Tiu Kelep Waterfall.

You can swim in the pool beneath the waterfall and it’s a great spot to use the GoPro. The water in the pool is crystal clear and has a blue tinge. Be extremely careful when you are swimming because I believe several tourists have come into trouble by getting sucked in and held down underneath the powerful force of the main flow.

The mist is even crazier at Tiu Kelep. Everything we owned got saturated but our camera gear survived. Remember to take out all of your rubbish and respect the land you are lucky enough to be exploring.

Another tip to help you on your way is that you definitely don’t need a guide. Men at the top of the hill near the sign will convince you it is required or necessary to buy a Tiu Kelep waterfall tour, but it is most definitely not and they are just trying to pressure you into a $10 tour, which essentially is just a straight-forward trail on a single direction.

We didn’t have to pay entry because we came to the waterfalls so early but I believe entry is a couple of dollars. That is non-negotiable if they ask and is actually legitimate.

WHERE TO STAY IN NORTHERN LOMBOK

If you are visiting attractions in the north such as Tiu Kelep or Mount Rinjani you should choose one of the three accommodations in the ‘ Northern ‘ section below.

Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile Waterfall are located in Senaru, North Lombok, in the Rinjani Geopark.

How to Get to Sendang Gile & Tiu Kelep Waterfall

To get to the waterfalls, you first need to get to Lombok Island in Indonesia.

Senaru is the best base for visiting the waterfalls.

Another way to visit Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile Waterfall is to join a day trip from Senggigi , Mataram, or Sembalun.

Book your waterfall tour here. The tour includes a short visit to the traditional village of Senaru at the foot of Mount Rinjani.

Alternatively, you can get there by renting a motorbike or hiring a driver. Senaru is a 1-hour drive from Sembalun and about 2 hours from Senggigi and Mataram.

We rented a scooter and explored Lombok at our own pace. Always wear a helmet and avoid driving at night!

Scooter rental starts from 65,000 IDR (4,35 USD) per day,  but we don’t recommend paying more than 75,000 IDR (5 USD).

Once you arrive, buy your entrance ticket and visit the waterfalls.

When is the Best Time to Visit Tiu Kelep Waterfall, Lombok?

Indonesia has two seasons: a dry season and a rainy season.

Lombok is a popular destination all year round!  But the best time to visit Lombok is during the dry season, from May to October.

The weather is sunny and dry during these months, perfect for swimming, hiking, and exploring Lombok Island.

During the rainy season, from November to April, the waterfalls are the most beautiful because they are so powerful and intense.

However, we visited Lombok in May, and seeing the waterfalls was a fantastic experience.

TIP As this is a popular attraction, avoid visiting on weekends as it can be crowded!

Tiu Kelep Waterfall Opening Hours

You can visit two waterfalls in Senaru, so this is a fantastic opportunity to see some of the best waterfalls in Lombok.

Air Terjun Tiu Kelep & Air Terjun Sendang Gile can be visited from 7 AM to 5 PM.

TIP Avoid the crowds and arrive as early as possible!

Tiu Kelep & Sendang Gile Waterfall Entrance Fee

The entrance fee is 20,000 IDR (1,35 USD), which includes both waterfalls. Parking is free!

Tiu Kelep & Sendang Gile Waterfall Hike

Tiu Kelep is one of the most stunning waterfalls we have visited in Lombok.

Once you arrive at the waterfall, buy your entrance ticket and start your hike on the marked trail.

In fact, guides are not mandatory!

But if you need a local guide, do not pay more than 150,000 IDR (10 USD), and it’s worth trying to bargain on prices! Otherwise, they will say 500,000 IDR (33 USD).

Sendang Gile Waterfall

You can walk down the concrete steps from the entrance to the first waterfall.

As you pass the Sendang Gile Waterfall, we recommend visiting this first, but if you want to beat the crowds, start at the second waterfall and hike directly to Tiu Kelep Waterfall.

Sendang Gile is a beautiful 30-meter-high two-tiered waterfall that takes only 10-15 minutes to reach.

There are a few benches around Sendang Gile, with some local vendors, so you can easily spend 1-2 hours relaxing.

Are you looking for a unique experience? Go under the Sendang Gile Waterfall and enjoy a natural shower.

TIP Take care of your valuables, as there are many monkeys here!

Tiu Kelep Waterfall Tour

Are you ready for an adventure? The hike to Tiu Kelep Waterfall is not easy, but it is worth it!

From Sendang Gile Waterfall, head back towards the entrance and turn left at the sign for Tiu Kelep Waterfall.

The first part of the hike is easy, with steps and then crossing a bridge.

Then, the waterfall hike becomes more exciting, leading through lush tropical jungle, muddy/dirt trails, and shallow rivers.

However, the path is not well-marked, so follow the trail along the river until you reach the waterfall.

TIP We recommend booking your epic waterfall tour via  Viator.

We recommend you take off your shoes when crossing the river and go barefoot instead in ankle-deep water. But the best advice is to bring water shoes or wear hiking sandals.

From Sendang Gile Waterfall, it takes about 40-50 minutes to reach Tiu Kelep Waterfall.

After arriving, you can take a refreshing dip! But be extremely careful when swimming, as the currents are strong and unpredictable!

Important note The Tiu Kelep has high humidity, and the water spray from the waterfall immediately wet your camera lens. Therefore, protect your lens with a polarized filter and use a special lens cleaner to dry the lens.

Tiu Kelep Waterfall is at least 50 meters high and offers a fantastic photo backdrop.

On our visit in May, we were lucky as there were no tourists and only a few locals around the waterfall in the morning.

Be careful when taking photos, as the rocks are very slippery, and we slipped once, but luckily we didn’t get injured!

TIP Plan your visit to spend at least 2-3 hours at the waterfalls.

• Allow enough time to visit the waterfalls, as muddy and slippery roads can make the hike time take longer.
• Take plenty of water and snacks.
• Wear closed hiking shoes and lightweight, quick-dry clothes, as the weather is always warm and humid.
• Bring water shoes and be careful, as the rocks can be slippery!

HOW TO GET TO SENARU LOMBOK?

Arriving by boat from Bali to Bangsal Harbour in North Lombok is the easiest jump-off point to then make the journey from Bangsal to the base of Rinjani in Senaru.

It’s very easy to find a private taxi or a motorbike to rent upon arriving at Bangsal Harbour.

Expect to pay around 400,000 IDR total for a private taxi to Senaru. You can also rent motorbikes/scooters in Bangsal for approximately 60,000 IDR per day.

The distance from Bangsal Harbour to Senaru is 60km and it’s approximately a 2-hour drive.

FINDING THE TRAIL TO TIU KELEP & SENDANG GILE

Once you are in Senaru, there are a number of entry points to begin the hike down to Tiu Kelep Waterfall which is clearly signposted on the main road that runs through Senaru village.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best time to visit is early in the morning before the crowds and you can potentially avoid having to pay the entrance fee the earlier you go.

Although, the entrance fee for both waterfalls is only 20,000 IDR so it’s not a big bite out of the wallet if you end up having to pay.

As my friends and I were heading down to the trailhead to the falls, we decided to stop and watch the sunrise over a beautiful rice field valley. Boy, was it worth it!

SENDANG GILE WATERFALL (AIR TERJUN SENDANG GILE)

Sendang Gile Waterfall is the first set of falls along the trail, so you can’t miss it.

Boasting is a two-tiered cascading waterfall that spits out of the rock face high above. We were so early here that we only had to share this waterfall with the local monkeys!

You can also go swimming in the rock pools and get right beneath the falls at Air Terjun Sendang Gile. Be sure to bring a quick-dry travel towel to dry off after a dip in the falls.

From here, head back up the track and to the left to continue on to Tiu Kelep. It’s a moderate 30-minute walk through the jungle and manageable without the use of a guide.

AIR TERJUN TIU KELEP

There are a couple of river crossings no more than knee-deep and a muddy trail that leads through the jungle to the jaw-dropping sight of Air Terjun Tiu Kelep. It’s a good idea to wear waterproof shoes for this hike.

There is no waterfall that I have seen that can compare to this. And even though it wasn’t my first time here, this waterfall never ceases to amaze me.

The water flows out of the walls and into a crystal clear pool below. There is a strong vortex-like current directly beneath the main water flow so be careful not to get sucked in.

The rocks are also super slippery, so if you are excited as I was when visiting, take care and watch your step.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO 

To get the best shots of the waterfall you will need to stand a good 30 meters away from the natural pool due to the constant clouds of mist that will instantly wet your lens.

The weather patterns around the base of Mt. Rinjani are very unpredictable so be prepared for a sudden downpour of rain. As soon as we got back to the homestay a storm rolled in for the good part of the afternoon.

There is not much in the way of food and water once you hit the trail to the falls so be sure to pack something before you make the trek in.

These two waterfalls are hands-down mother nature at its finest and I strongly recommend that you add them to your Lombok itinerary!

Blue Mountain Cottage is a small homestay in Senaru village within walking distance of both waterfalls. The a/c rooms have comfortable beds and a private bathroom. It’s basic, but it’s all you need for a couple of nights!

My free tours Moscow city starts on Slavonic Square (Kitay-Gorod Metro Station), passes the world-famous St. Basil’s Cathedral, which was built by Ivan the Terrible on the south side of Red Square in the 16th century and where the tsars were once crowned. Then it goes across the Red Square at the Lenin Mausoleum, the luxury department store GUM and with a view of the Kremlin towards the historical museum. Of course, you will also learn more about the stories that once happened behind the thick walls of the Kremlin – from the Tsars and Napoleon to Stalin. Then we continue through the idyllic Alexander Garden.

«First acquaintance with Moscow» – a 2.5-hour city tour in the center of Moscow

This Moscow city tour starts on the Theater Square, past Lubyanka Square and the KGB-building, then through Kitay Gorod district and Varvarka Street, past the world-famous St. Basil’s Cathedral. Then it goes across Zarjadje Park, over Red Square at the Lenin Mausoleum, the GUM-department store and towards the Historical Museum. We walk through the Alexander Garden.

A 3.5-hour car/bus tour of Moscow.

This is the best tour of Moscow city as all the important sights are visited. I am your Moscow city guide who will walk you through the city explaining the charming history of the city. This tour begins with picking you up from the hotel. 3 breaks are offered for photographing.

First, we will visit the most famous riverside streets and bridges in the center of the city with the most beautiful views of the Kremlin and the Moskva River (e.g. the Kremlin embankment and the Great Stone Bridge).

The first photo break is made at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. We then pass by the district with numerous museums, Prechistinka Street and the district with numerous medical areas.

We again stop at the Novodevichy Convent, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the other bank of the Moskva River to click pictures.

Then we visit “Sparrow Hills” where you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the city of Moscow from the observation deck. Then there are the skyscrapers of Moscow-City, the Kutuzov avenue, the New Arbat, Tverskaya Street, the world-famous Bolshoi Theater, the KGB building and Varvarka Street. Here there are ample spots to click pictures.

We then drive past the Kremlin again and finally reach Red Square. We take a short tour of Red Square and say goodbye in the Alexander Garden.

Metro tour – daily

Palaces for ordinary people – that was what Stalin promised to the people when the construction of the Moscow Metro began between the World Wars. The communist dictator hadn’t promised too much. No other underground system in the world can boast such spectacular architecture – chandeliers, decorations, stucco, paintings on the walls – each station is individually designed. No wonder that Moscow residents love their metro. I will guide you through the bustle of one of the busiest subways in the world and show you the most beautiful stations Moscow city has.

Tour of Communist Moscow – every day

After the Communist October Revolution in 1918, Moscow became the capital of the Soviet Empire and was the center of socialist orbit for more than 70 years. The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle. You will also learn about Stalin’s Great Terror political campaign and the system of the GULAG and how the USSR, the communist Russian republic, became modern Russia.

Alternative Moscow Tour – daily

Explore the unseen Moscow with your Moscow private guide and discover a range of sights during this alternative walking tour.  Away from the main tourist spots (in the central district of Kitay-Gorod), just a short walk from Red Square and St. Basil’s Cathedral, you suddenly find yourself in one of the trendiest districts of Moscow. This place not only has trendy cafes and green squares, but here you can see the most beautiful spray works (according to Albrecht Dürer), hangout-places of the youth and hipsters, as well as learn what Moscow looked like in the 19th century. Here you will also learn exciting and even bloody stories about famous gangsters, eccentric business people and legends like the wandering preacher Rasputin, who is known in Russia either as the “holy devil” or the mad monk. To learn a little more about Moscow’s culture, this is the tour for you. On my alternative tour, you will get to know Moscow away from the tourist hotspots. This tour is of 2 hours duration and you will experience the following on the tour:

• St. John’s Hill, a quiet oasis right in the center, where time has stopped as it did in pre-Communist times
• Khokhlovka Art Center, where Russian hipsters and street artists hang out

Kremlin tour – daily (closed on Thursday)

With its 20 towers and high walls, the Kremlin rises imposingly over Red Square. This world-famous fortress with its area of ​​28 hectares is home to over 800 years of Russian history. Described as the eighth wonder of the world, this historic fortress complex is the principal symbol of Russia that sits on the banks of the Moscow River. Today the Kremlin still harbors numerous secrets and has palaces and cathedrals, surrounded by Kremlin Wall. The current wall was constructed between the 15 th  and 16 th  centuries, but the original wall was made of wood around the year 1147. The Kremlin Wall became an important symbol of Moscow’s importance in the Russian Empire. This top tourist destination attracts millions of people every year and there are various sights to see. With my Kremlin tour, you will see the oldest square in the city in the heart of the Kremlin, the once largest cannon in the world and the scene of numerous dramas – from Ivan the Terrible and Napoleon to Stalin. 1.5-hour boat trip on the Moskva River.

Taking a boat tour in Moscow on the Moskva River is a very pleasant experience. It allows you to know the city from a totally different perspective and admire the beautiful bridges. A military tour – riding on tanks in Stupino (Moscow region)

Russian Military is one of the largest military forces in the world formed in 1992. With my Military Tour experience what it likes to be in the Russian military, shooting guns, ride the Tank T-34 and various models of German tanks from the Second World War, as well as armored personnel carriers and vehicles. You will also shoot from the AK-47 and another combat weapon.
