Travel + Leisure / Kristin Kempa

You may have a designated travel sweatshirt or a favorite pair of shoes to wear on flights — but what about other essentials, like pants, jackets, T-shirts, dresses, and pajamas? If you prioritize comfort in transit, it’s time to revamp your travel wardrobe to ensure every trip is a cozy one. Lucky for you, we editors at Travel + Leisure rounded up a few of our favorite comfy clothing items we always wear on the road and in the sky.

From impossibly soft lounge sets to what we believe are the world’s comfiest jeans, we've combed our closets for those few items we tend to wear every time we travel. Our list includes favorites from Lululemon, Patagonia, Lilly Pulitzer, and more, so whether you prefer to travel in loose-fitting loungewear or more compressive clothing, you’re sure to find something you love below.

lululemon Define Jacket Luon

We’ve all been on a flight that’s chilly enough for some extra layers but too warm for a heavy coat or sweatshirt. That’s why we always pack this comfy, light jacket in our carry-on. Not only is it incredibly sleek and stylish thanks to its slim fit, but it’s also super soft, stretchy, breathable, and easy to move in. The sleeves even feature thumbholes and “cuffins” (cuffs that can be folded over your hands) for added warmth. Snag the Define Jacket Luon in eight sizes and five shades including espresso and bone.

“This jacket is essentially my plane uniform — I wear it every single time I fly,” editor Sophie Mendel said. “It's comfy but keeps me looking put-together, plus I can wear it with leggings and sneakers for a super functional, comfortable, and cute transit 'fit. It also has two zippered pockets which are extra-convenient during travel.”

Calia Women's Inspire High Rise 7/8 Legging

Dick's Sporting Goods

Flying in compression leggings is wise, especially for long-haul flights, but some compression leggings tend to squeeze you uncomfortably. That’s never a problem with Calia’s Inspire High Rise 7/8 leggings, though. Boasting subtle compression that molds to your body, the leggings are sure to remain comfy and breathable without sliding down or sagging. They even have unique seam lines that strategically accentuate your curves — though, admittedly,  this is more noticeable in some colors than others. To top it off, we love the way they feel to the touch.

“These Calia leggings are without a doubt the softest pair I own,” associate editor Hillary Maglin said. “I've worn them for everything from yoga classes to grocery runs to a recent 12-hour travel day, and I've remained comfy through it all. The leggings are thick without hindering mobility, and they're compressive without digging into my stomach (something I can't stand). It also doesn't hurt that they have subtle side pockets large enough for my phone. Though I have plenty of black leggings in my wardrobe, I find myself reaching for these ones again and again.”

Commes Des Garçons Play x Converse Chuck Taylor Hidden Heart Low Top Sneakers

It's true: Converse never goes out of style. Conveniently, the sleek sneakers tend to last forever, too, so consider copping a pair of the Converse x Comme des Garçons Play Chuck 70s. They feature the typical silhouette of the brand’s low tops, plus they come in white or black. No matter which color you choose, this particular style also boasts the Comme des Garçons red heart and eyes logo on the side. You can snag these in women’s sizes 5 to 15 and men’s sizes 3 to 13.

“This is my go-to travel shoe because it's comfortable but also dressy enough that I can wear it throughout my trip when I want an elevated sneaker look,” travel editor Susmita Baral said.

Paka Men's Apu Lightweight Puffer

One of our most important tips for traveling in comfort? Dress to avoid freezing or overheating. With this lightweight men’s puffer from Paka, regulating your body temperature is easy. It’s so slim that it looks more like a hoodie than a puffer, but its hidden layers and insulation efficiently lock in warmth. Even if you choose not to wear it in transit, you can effortlessly pack it down into a bag or suitcase.

“This puffer jacket has the warmth of a parka but not the bulkiness, which makes it the perfect outerwear to bring while traveling,” writer Anna Popp said. “It can fit in a suitcase easily and it's also perfectly cozy and warm to wear on an airplane if you need to save extra space. I love that it looks nice while going out in the city on a snowy day, but that it’s also designed to be worn for sportier occasions like skiing, hiking, climbing, or running.”

J.McLaughlin Lowden Jeans

J.McLaughlin

We know, we know — traveling in jeans might as well be a crime. We thought so, too, until we got our hands on J.McLaughlin’s Lowden jeans. The stretchy cotton denim feels more like a soft pair of leggings, and even after long-haul flights, we never felt restricted or uncomfortable in them. The jeans feature a wide-leg slim fit for added mobility and a high waist for comfort and confidence on and off the plane.

“I never thought I would be a jeans person for airplanes but after wearing these on a cross-country flight, I'm a big fan now,” said Popp. “These jeans are super stretchy and roomy, so if (and when) I get bloated while traveling, the high-waist fabric doesn't dig into my stomach or cause me any discomfort. They also look super cute and stylish and can be styled with many different outfits, so I’ve officially added these jeans to my travel wardrobe for every trip.”

Patagonia Women's Nano Puff Jacket

We’re adamant that Patagonia’s Nano Puff is the jacket every traveling woman needs in her wardrobe. It’s lightweight, packable, durable, stylish, warm, windproof, water-resistant — need we go on? Some of our favorite extras are a drawstring hemline to seal in heat and hidden internal pockets. On top of all its functional features, it also comes in sizes ranging from XXS to XXL and 11 colors including buckhorn green, chilled blue, and sandy melon.

“When it comes to packable jackets for women, this one from Patagonia is the best option for virtually any trip,” Popp said. “The design is simple but very functional, and I love being able to wear it for any season. In the winter, it's thin enough to layer for more warmth, but I can wear it as-is during summer camping trips. My outdoor-adventuring family all own Nano puff jackets and they still look as good as new, so I love that they’re built to last – possibly forever – in my opinion.”

Rag & Bone Miramar Jogger

Rag & Bone

These joggers are so stylish, you’d never guess they’re also comfy as can be. Don’t let their denim appearance fool you — they’re actually made of soft cotton terry that provides stellar mobility and comfort. Over the legging look for travel? Throw these on instead, and pair them with a pair of boots or walking shoes and moto jacket for an effortlessly cool look you don’t even have to change out of once you reach your destination.

“These Rag & Bone joggers are simply the best for travel,” editor-in-chief Jacqui Gifford said. “I call them ‘faux’ jeans; the fabric looks like it’s a regular old pair of denim, but surprise — they have the softness and ease of a pair of sweats. Ideal for a plane ride or even a long day out on a tour, these are the ultimate pants that blend function, form, and style.”

Forme Power Bra

In need of a comfy new sports bra to keep everything in place on your next journey? Our editors (and a certain blonde popstar) are all about the Forme Power Bra. It’s comfy, cute, compressive, and most impressively, designed to zap bad posture. The wide straps take pressure off your shoulders and back, while the comfortable fit promotes proper body alignment, quick recovery, and overall health. We even love all seven colors it comes in — especially rosé and ecru.

"As a bra-needer and someone who really shouldn't be traveling without one, I absolutely hate wearing something bulky while I fly,” associate photo editor Alessandra Amodio said. “My go-to is the Forme Power Bra. Not only is it incredibly comfortable and made of high-quality material, but it’s actually FDA-registered to correct posture and improve your body alignment. Now I fly comfortably and my neck, shoulders and back feel so much better. I just throw on a cute open button down, pair it with the Ergo Shorts or Sculpt+ Leggings , and look chic and put-together while traveling. (This is also what Taylor Swift wore in her Eras Tour rehearsals according to a photo from her Time Person of the Year profile — if it's good enough for Taylor, it's good enough for me.)”

Circus by Sam Edelman Zuri Strap Ballet Flat

Circus by Sam Edelman

We love that ballet flats are back — and this strappy style demands to be worn. The low heel and soft interior make them a great, pain-free option for travel while cross straps, buckles, and tiny beaded bows keep things stylish. They come in 11 sizes including half sizes, and 15 unique colors and prints. We recommend the shades dark French macaroon, light wash, and the leopard-printed beige brown.

“Even though you’d think flats would always be a comfortable shoe option, it’s actually surprisingly difficult to find flats that don’t dig into your feet or make your toes all sweaty,” testing editor Jackie Cucco said. “I’ve tried so many pairs that seem comfortable at first, but end up being too rigid and irritating by the end of the day. This is the first pair I’ve found that is soft enough to wear all day long, either with or without socks or tights. They feel like slippers, and they come in more than a dozen colors to match any vibe.”

Black Diamond Notion Pants

Black Diamond

Whether you’re headed to the airport, the trails, or even the gym, the Black Diamond men’s Notion Pants are your best bet for comfort and mobility. Designed with an elastic waist, a drawstring cord, and a loose fit, these pants feel almost like wearing your favorite pair of sweatpants. However, their slim appearance complete with two hand pockets and two rear pockets make them dapper enough to wear to dinner, a show, or even the office. Grab them in a neutral hue like ash or tundra, or opt for a more eye-catching shade like raging sea or burnt Sienna.

“You don't have to be an Alex Honnold–level rock climber to love these super-soft pants,” news director Paul Brady said. “They're comfortable enough for long-haul flights, even in coach, but they've still got a crisp silhouette to keep you looking put-together.”

Lilly Pulitzer Seaview Top & Deri Palazzo Pant Linen Set

Lilly Pulitzer

You can’t go wrong with Lilly Pulitzer, especially when it comes to jetsetting. This breathable, lightweight linen set from the brand is just as soft and cozy as it is cute, so we recommend adding it to your travel wardrobe immediately. The classic, collared button-down is super versatile thanks to cuffable sleeves and a tieable bottom — plus you can turn it into a jacket or cover-up by layering it unbuttoned over literally any other outfit. Snag the ultra-flattering matching pants to complete the look.

“I think the most versatile item to pack on a warm-weather vacay is a white linen button down, and this roomy one from Lilly Pulitzer is good enough to also grab in other colors like spearmint and mulberry,” associate editorial director Morgan Ashley Parker said. “I’ve worn it unbuttoned over a swimsuit and then slipped on matching palazzo pants — with an irresistible elasticized waist — for dinner alfresco. I personally love the all-white combo for warmer climates but the New Yorker in me would also recommend grabbing the coordinating onyx x onyx set if you can catch it in stock.”

Spanx AirEssentials Wide Leg Pant

There are few things softer than Spanx Air Essentials’ Wide Leg Pants. They feel similar to the brand's sleek and smoothing leggings and shapewear, but they have a relaxed fit rather than a super compressive one. While the pants could certainly be worn as loungewear, they’re also fashionable enough to wear to the airport, a coffee shop, or on an errand run. Though they fit and even look a bit like sweatpants, figure-enhancing contouring on the rear differentiates them from your typical comfy clothing.

“It’s impossible to find a better material than Spanx AirEssentials ,” Parker said. “All pieces feel silky to the touch, hefty enough for a chilly plane cabin, and pretty much impossible to wrinkle. I’m super into wide-leg styles — and need this exact petite option for my 5' 3" frame — and these pants are pretty much a given on my long flights nowadays. Personally, I love the olive-y palm color as an alternative to black or navy, so my only real choice is whether to match them with a crew neck or a sleek half zip instead.”

Pitusa Pima Abaya

If your ideal wardrobe staple is a do-it-all piece, look no further than Pitusa’s Pima Abaya. The cozy caftan is perfect for everything from international flights to pool days to bedtime. That’s thanks to impossibly soft cotton construction, oversized sleeves, and an airy, relaxed fit. There are no buttons, snaps, or drawstrings on this piece, so you’ll never have to worry about uncomfortable digging or fussing with it in order for it to fit right. You can customize your fit upon buying, though, and you can even choose from 15 colors.

“I joke about my ideal wardrobe consisting of a caftan in every color and this floor-length maxi fits perfectly into that vibe,” Parker said. “It can serve as a dress, cover-up, nightgown — pretty much anything, all day, every day in a tropical climate. The lightweight pima cotton is incredibly soft, too, and it comes in petite, standard, and tall options to reduce tailoring needs. I like this exact one because it’s not so sheer that I wouldn’t wear it out to dinner or on the plane but if you’re looking for more of a peekaboo style, you can get the same cut in a burnout fabric instead.”

Mar Soreli Ginger Mary Jane

Mar Soreli

Looking to travel in comfort without sacrificing style? Check out the Ginger Mary Janes by Mar Soreli. Everything from the insole to the strap is ultra-soft and cushioned, plus the buckle and strap are easy to tighten and loosen for a custom fit — or for quickly taking on and off at TSA. They’re even soft to the touch thanks to velvet uppers, and they’re versatile enough to wear with leggings, skirts, dresses, and jeans.

“If you’re someone who wishes slippers were appropriate outdoor shoes, these ballet flats are the next best thing,” Parker said. “The velvet is so cozy but still looks great with anything from plane leggings to a nicer skirt on a night out, with or without socks or tights. And, if you do want to wear them through security (and don’t have TSA PreCheck®), each strap actually has a snap in addition to the buckle adjustment so they’re incredibly quick to slip on and off as needed.”

Allbirds Wool Runners

Allbirds shoes were basically made for travel, and the Men’s Wool Runners are some of our absolute favorites. The inside is actually lined with fine merino wool, making for soft and warm-yet-breathable wear no matter the time of the year. On top of that, the sneakers are equipped with reliable arch support and machine washable fabric. While we wouldn’t recommend them for running, they’re the perfect comfy shoes for pretty much everything else, including walking, hiking, and navigating the airport.

“My husband swears by these comfortable men's walking shoes so much that I ordered a pair of the women's version for myself,” senior editor Kayla Becker said. “And they really deliver. We both love the thick, foamy cushion that keeps our feet supported on long travel days, and they've stood up to everything from 20,000-step jaunts in Iceland to hiking Diamond Head in Hawaii.”

Aday Turn It Up Pants

Tapered trousers are office staples — so if you’re traveling for business, we suggest adding a pair or two of the Aday Turn It Up Pants to your wardrobe. They’re the goes-with-everything piece you’ve been looking for, and their soft, tailored stretch paired with an elastic waistband makes them comfy enough to catch a flight in. The ankle-length pants have a pocket at each hip and are available in a dozen colors.

“As soon as I found these sleek, wrinkle-free travel pants, they became a permanent part of my travel uniform (and I've even written about how all the travel editors I know have them ),” Becker said. “They're not only super comfortable for long-haul flights (I just flew 14 hours in them and felt like I was wearing pajamas), but they also look put-together right off the plane, whether I'm headed to the office or a walking tour. I'd wear them literally anywhere.”

Saucony Endorphin Speed 4

If you’re the type of traveler that likes to workout on the road, Saucony’s Endorphin Speed 4 is the versatile sneaker for you. Not only is it an ideal comfy running shoe, but it’s also lightweight and sleek enough to wear for every other part of your journey, too. Whether you wear it on the plane or to sightsee once you arrive at your destination, you’ll always feel supported in the Speed 4. Choose from five eye-catching colorways and 15 sizes including half-sizes.

“I've been training for the London Marathon, and since I started wearing these sneakers, I haven't had a single ounce of pain in my feet, even on long runs,” senior editorial director Nina Ruggiero said. “They are extremely cushioned yet so lightweight. Even after the race is done, I imagine I might be wearing them on the long flight home to LA.”

Fundamental Coast Shorebreak Hoodie

Fundamental Coast

To make the most of the space in your suitcase, you’ll want to prioritize versatile pieces that can do it all. That’s why we love the Fundamental Coast Shorebreak Hoodie so much. It’s perfect for travel days and morning walks near your hotel, but it’s also elevated enough to wear to a cafe, museum, or shops around town. The pullover hoodie has a front pocket, drawstring hood, and slim fit for a more put-together appearance. Grab it in phantom black or storm, which both have a beachy, heathered texture.

“Fundamental Coast has perfected Southern California athleisure, especially for men, and my fiancé lives in the brand's hoodies, shorts, vests, and polos,” Ruggiero said. “The Shorebreak hoodie is especially soft and sleek and works well whether we're out doing something active or going to brunch at a new spot in our beachy LA neighborhood.”

Vuori Cove Funnel Neck Tank

Vuori

This high-necked tank top is so stylish, you’d never guess it’s also comfy enough for exercise, stretching out on a plane, or even napping. Crafted with a soft and stretchy rayon-elastane fabric blend, this top never digs into the skin or feels uncomfortably tight around the neck. While it’s not quite cropped, it’s not too long, either, so it’s likely to complement a variety of bodies and ensembles.

“This super-soft rib knit tank is my go-to running top, but the high neck also gives it some style (in addition to protecting my most sensitive areas from the sun),” Ruggiero said. “I have it in multiple colors, and I've definitely worn the black and tan ones out with friends at night, too.”

Vuori Echo Insulated Vest

Vuori

A reliable vest is essential for travelers — it locks in warmth without causing you to overheat, and it couldn’t be easier to zip on and off. We’re big fans of this one from Vuori for its insulation, water resistance, and easy cleaning. It has zip pockets for your hands or small items, and a subtle collar keeps heat from escaping while allowing your neck total range of motion, irritation-free. To top it off, the vest comes in two stylish shades.

“This lightweight but warm insulated vest has quickly become one of my fiancé's favorite items of clothing,” Ruggiero said. “He wears it on dog walks, weekends, and travel days — it even has pockets.”

Reef Men's Swellsole Cutback Sneaker

It’s no secret that Reef is one of the most trusted rugged shoe brands around, so when it released boat shoes, we were intrigued. It turns out Reef’s boat shoes are just as comfy and long-lasting as the sandals we know and love. The men’s Swellsole Cutback Sneakers are the perfect fusion of classic boat shoes and cushioned sneakers, and they’re perfect for beachy vacations. Wear them from the dock straight to dinner — then keep them on for a busy night of exploring the boardwalk.

“I always thought of Reef for flip-flops, but since my fiancé found their hybrid boat shoes/sneakers, he's bought them in at least three colors,” Ruggiero said. “They're supportive thanks to memory foam, and can be dressed up or down.”

Public Rec All Day Pants

Odds are, you’ve seen these popular pants everywhere from the office to the coffee shop to the airport. That’s because their straight-leg fit and stretchy nylon-spandex fabric move with you rather than tightly confining your waist and legs like other styles. But don’t let their uber-soft texture fool you — these pants are still equipped with two front pockets, two faux back pockets, belt loops, and a zipper fly, so you’ll look and feel just as sophisticated as you are comfortable when you wear these.

“The slacks feel almost like loungewear thanks to their soft nylon-spandex blend,” editor Taylor Fox said. “They're the perfect balance of comfort and style for long flights where you don't want to feel cramped into tight pants, but want to still look put-together when you land. They can also be dressed up or dressed down for added versatility no matter what you have on the agenda.”

ManMade Boxers and T-shirt Bundle

ManMade Brand

One can never have too many basics, and we love this three-piece pack from ManMade. Each set comes with two pairs of black boxer briefs and one white T-shirt. Made of high-quality modal, spandex, and Pima cotton, the briefs and tee are guaranteed to remain soft, breathable, moisture-wicking, and anti-chafing through everything — even long-haul flights and airport sprints. To ensure your comfort, the bundle comes in six sizes ranging from small to 3XL.

“My husband packs about a dozen pairs of boxers and undershirts for a weeklong trip and his absolute favorites come from ManMade,” Fox said. “They're lightweight and breathable with a buttery soft material that doesn't add a bulky layer under clothing. All of their items contain the perfect amount of stretch as well without allowing the clothing to ride up or bunch in uncomfortable places whether he's hiking, riding his bike, or preparing for a long flight.”

The Mate Organic Waffle Knit Joggers

There’s something so luxurious about a good waffle weave. Designed with a relaxed fit and buttery soft texture, these Organic Waffle Knit Joggers by Mate are no exception. They’re made of 100 percent organic cotton, crafted with elastic at the waist and ankles, and equipped with one pocket on the back right side. The cozy joggers come in four neutral colors (jet black, bone, lilac, and bark) and five sizes. You can also drop the matching Organic Waffle Long Sleeve Shirt in your cart to complete the look.

“If I could replace all of my joggers with these comfortable, waffle-knit pants I would,” writer Ali Domrongchai said. “They have the perfect amount of stretch that lends itself well to long travel days, and thanks to its textured design, they not only feel good, but look good, too. In fact, since I've been wearing these cozy knit joggers, a few of my friends have snagged a pair as well because of how much I rave about them.”

Tips for Buying Comfortable Travel Clothes

Consider the material.

When traveling, it’s important to choose clothing that’s as comfortable and low-maintenance as possible. That said, we recommend clothes made of soft, sweat-wicking, and breathable fabrics such as cotton, polyester, linen, or wool. It’s also wise to opt for wrinkle-resistant materials like nylon and spandex to keep you looking fresh and put-together.

Look for travel features

Though it may feel unnecessary, we guarantee you’ll end up thanking yourself for buying pants, dresses, and bags with lots of extra pockets. Additionally, temperature-regulating clothes can come in pretty handy when you’re on the road — so consider adding clothing with cooling capabilities (or just clothes made of linen, nylon, or polyester) to your travel wardrobe.

The most breathable clothing is made of materials like cotton, linen, nylon, polyester, merino wool, and silk. Though fabrics like spandex, fleece, and denim have plenty of benefits, they’re not quite as breathable.

Generally soft, stretchy, and loose-fitting clothing is best for travel, as it’ll keep you comfy and won’t feel restrictive on long flights or drives. Some people may also opt for compressive clothing, like leggings or compression socks, which helps promote circulation on long travel days. You may also want to choose clothing you know to be breathable so you don’t overheat.

Travel Outfits: How to Look Chic When You’re Flying

travel outfits

Listen—I’m all about rocking a cute travel outfit when I’m heading out of town…but I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing heels to the airport.

To be honest, I don’t even like wearing jeans on a plane (although I’ll occasionally make an exception if they’re REALLY comfortable jeans , or if my flight is under three hours.)

Usually you’ll find me rocking a head-to-toe set of my favorite affordable cashmere during the winter, and a lightweight loungewear set during the summer.

I often see pictures of bloggers at the airport posing next to their cute pink luggage wearing like…wedges and a mini-dress. HARD PASS. How is that even comfortable? When you’re en route to the airport (and your final destination) it’s all about feeling comfortable.

For this reason, I decided to put together a little guide to cute travel outfits…featuring things that you’ll actually want to travel in , whether you’re heading out for a winter getaway or a girls trip .

Because believe it or not, it’s possible to rock comfy loungewear, leggings, or a jumpsuit and still look SUPER chic, as long as you style them properly (especially my favorite faux leather leggings .)

Below are a handful of great travel outfits I found while trolling IG—and the exact things you can buy to replicate them.

(Also: if you’re also on the hunt for stylish carry-on luggage or if you need some good go-to travel toiletries…I got you covered.)

Chic Travel Outfits

Travel Outfits

Here, I’m sharing a handful of my go-to travel outfit pieces. These are all items that I think you should have in your closet regardless of how often you go on a getaway, but they just so happen to be particularly comfy choices when going on a plane.

These picks will of course depend on how long your flight is and where you’re headed, but overall, I think they’re practical for travel days.

The only caveat here is that I know a jumpsuit isn’t exactly ideal if you’re going on a long-haul flight—however—I personally don’t mind wearing them on planes because they’re so comfy and not really that difficult to slip in and out of when you need a bathroom break.

If jumpsuits aren’t your jam, there are plenty of other ideas in this post that should work for you, like a cute matching sweatsuit or leggings and a leather jacket. Without further ado, here are the staples I’d recommend having on hand for travel days.

PRAYRNA SINHA

This post gave me a more clear idea of what I will wear when travelling and I especially loved the part where you mentioned the all black and all white monochromatic looks .

' src=

I do not think I would wear white on a plane. No to the belly sticking out as well. I do like the stretchy pants and sneakers.

' src=

Why would anyone wear a jumpsuit on a plane? The toilets are used by hundreds of people, now you want to pull down the top part of your clothes and have it dangling somewhere near the toilet, while you’re sitting on a toilet that exposes the part that gets wee on when the seat is up? Eeu that’s all kind of germ wrong!! But I do love the little 3/4 joggers! Def looking for some of those for my next long haul (when this pandemic is over!)

10 Chic & Stylish Travel Outfit Combinations That You Can Easily Recreate *Including Packing Tips*

Stylish travel outfits.

Do you have any travel planned over the next few months? Chances are, you probably have some sort of trip planned! If so, this post is for you! We travel quite a bit so it’s safe to say I’m a pro in this area. I’m frequently asked what to wear on travel days specifically so below, I’m sharing simple, stylish travel outfit combinations that you can easily recreate when you take your next trip! Plus, some important packing tips I’ve learned along the way…

By the way, if you’d like to see more outfit ideas and hear even more amazing packing tips, check out the corresponding video here .

Stylish Travel Outfits for women

#1) Sweatsuit

Today’s sweatsuits are a far cry from the Juicy sweatsuits we saw in the early aughts! The sweatsuit options now can look very chic, sophisticated, and like “regular” clothing. They’re also extremely comfortable, which is especially important if you’re on an overnight international flight and need to get some sleep or just want to be comfy on your next road trip.

The sweatsuit I’m wearing above is from the Spanx AirEssentials collection and I love it so much I have it in green, black, and a pretty beige color. What I love about these pieces is that they’re very chic, super lightweight, breathable, and SO comfortable. They also come in petite, regular, and tall length options and in cropped or full-length (I’m wearing a petite small). The pullover and pants are also wrinkle-resistant…a must for travel! If you don’t already have a comfortable sweatsuit that you love, I can’t recommend this set enough!

Note : You don’t have to wear a matchy-matchy set like this. If you have a pair of black joggers you love and a comfy sweater you love…pair those together for a similar look!

I talk more about this set and the AirEssentials collection in this post . AND…use code ERINXSPANX to get 10% off these pieces!

Activewear Stylish Travel Outfits

#2) Activewear

Next up is activewear! You’ve probably seen on your Instagram, the typical influencer travel uniform of leggings, blazer, sneakers, tee, and baseball hat. That’s a super cute look but it’s not personally my style. How I would do activewear when I travel is to wear wide-leg pants like these by Beyond Yoga. They look elevated, sophisticated, and not like traditional activewear. I paired it with the matching camisole and a cute wrap front cropped sweater so you still get that matchy activewear feel… just a bit more elevated.

Cargo Pants & Top

#3) Cargo Pants & Top

Cargo pants are comfortable and casual and are a step up from leggings or sweatpants. These pants are from Banana Republic and I love the fit, length, and utility-inspired details. If cargo pants aren’t your style, consider some more casual jogger-style pants instead. Either way…cargo pants, joggers, or trousers are a great alternative to jeans while you’re sitting on the plane.

For travel shoes, I typically like to wear closed-toe shoes like sneakers or booties but it’s totally up to you! If you prefer toe wiggle room, run hot, or are going somewhere tropical, you might want to wear sandals instead. I like to look at the shoes I’m packing and wear the bulkiest pair on travel day, so I have more room in my suitcase! And I never…NEVER…wear heels for travel days. Anyone else ever have to run through the airport to catch a flight??

Jeans & Top

#4) Jeans & Top

The next travel uniform that’s so simple, accessible, and easy to recreate from pieces in your own closet is jeans and a top! Jeans and a top with either sneakers or boots are my go-tos almost every time I travel. In the look above, I’m wearing a pair of Mother jeans that has the perfect inseam for me, a high rise so I feel secure but not uncomfortable, and a wide-leg silhouette. On top, I’m wearing a billowy top that doesn’t cling to the body and is comfortable and forgiving. If you’re going to go this route, try to pair your jeans with a top that’s a basic-with-a-twist to add some interest to the look. For example, this top has pretty crochet detailing at the neckline and fun bell sleeves. I’m wearing a pair of Rag & Bone sneakers in this look, but you can wear whatever sneakers you love or some booties to dress it up… just make sure they’re breathable, comfortable, and it’s not your first time wearing them. Travel is never the time to break in a new pair of shoes!

By the way, I’m sharing even more helpful tips in this corresponding video in case you’re interested!

Cropped Blazer & Jeans

#5) Cropped Blazer & Jeans

Next up is the cropped blazer and jeans combo. I run cold and for some reason, I’m really cold on planes and in airports. So, I love to have layers I can throw on or shed depending on how I’m feeling. Packing light layers is so important anyways, to ensure a properly functioning travel wardrobe.

I didn’t have a great picture of this outfit but still wanted to share it. Plus, you can see it in motion in the corresponding video . I’m wearing a tan cropped blazer from Mango that’s older but still a go-to for me, so I linked a similar option. Underneath the blazer, I’m wearing a white ruched tee (another basic-with-a-twist we’ve talked about!). I also threw on a scarf because it looks so chic, and it’ll keep me warm…fashion and function! Pair your blazer and tee with your favorite comfortable jeans and sneakers or booties and you’re ready to go in a chic, pulled-together travel outfit! I’m wearing my go-to Chloe sneakers I’ve worn on SO many trips since they’re just so comfortable, stylish, and versatile. They also have a little platform for some added height, which is a win in my book!

By the way, we shared an EPIC travel capsule wardrobe in this post that’s a must-read after you’re done with this post!

Long Blazer & Jeans

#6) Long Blazer & Jeans

Similar to the last look, wear a long blazer versus the cropped one. A longer blazer is a little harder to wear for petite women, but all you have to do is leave it unbuttoned and half-tuck your top into the front of your jeans to help elongate your look and balance the proportions.

In this look, I’m wearing a pair of Moussy Vintage jeans, which is one of my favorite denim brands because the washes are beautiful, the fit is perfect, and most of the styles are a little shorter…perfect for petite women (I’m 5’4” for reference). I paired the jeans with a basic white tee and this pretty off-white oversized blazer. I love the oversized fit for easy layering over anything you’re wearing or have packed. On my feet, I’m wearing a pair of Golden Goose sneakers that are the perfect combination of comfy and stylish. For my full review of Golden Goose sneakers, make sure you check out this post next.

Tip: Don’t ever wear a travel outfit that doesn’t function with the rest of your travel wardrobe. Whatever pieces you wear on the plane or in the car should be pieces you can wear again later in the trip with what’s already packed in your suitcase.

Light Jacket & Jeans

#7) Light Jacket & Jeans

This is another go-to travel uniform for me and it’s a great way to show that you can alter your travel uniform to whatever works for you and feels like your style. Your lightweight jacket could be a cargo jacket, bomber, leather jacket, denim jacket, etc. In this look, I’m wearing a Veronica Beard utility jacket that I bought for our trip to Africa and have been wearing nonstop! It’s such a gorgeous statement piece but again, you can wear whatever jacket works for you. I paired it with the same formula we’ve followed for the past few looks…chic jeans, a tee, and comfortable sneakers. In the photo, I’m wearing sandals but for travel, I’d swap it for sneakers or booties.

Trench & Jeans or Pants | Stylish Travel Outfits

#8) Trench & Jeans or Pants

You have to be careful when it comes to wearing longer coats or jackets during travel because you don’t want to risk having anything drag on the floor while you’re walking through the airport or in the ladies’ room! But a mid-length coat is usually perfect. I personally love how pulled together and sophisticated a trench looks and how it can completely elevate any outfit. Plus, it’s usually a great piece to have with you while you travel. But you could also go with a cardigan or wool coat depending on your style, the weather where you’re traveling, and how you’re planning to wear it during the rest of your trip and with pieces you have packed.

Tip: When you’re packing, make sure to stick to a color story so that everything mixes and matches effortlessly. I like to stick to neutrals like beige, white, tan, black, etc., and only include 1-2 “special” pieces that are outside of my color story.

All Black Stylish Travel Outfits

#9) All Black

An all-black travel outfit will work for pretty much any destination and especially if your travel wardrobe color story includes black. In the look above, I’m wearing a chic black sleeveless sweater and some paper-thin black leather pants that I wore on a recent trip to California. These pants are super lightweight and breathable but you could easily swap these out for a pair of black jeans, joggers, leggings, trousers, cargo pants, or whatever you feel best in. On my feet, I’m wearing a pair of See by Chloe combat boots I’ve had for years and really love! They’ve been “on-trend” for years so I don’t see them going anywhere anytime soon. Plus, they’re SO versatile, comfortable, and lightweight.

Cool Pants & Blazer travel outfit idea

#10) Cool Pants & Blazer

This is a bit of a wildcard but it’s such a fun look that I just had to share! I’m wearing a pair of Me+Em houndstooth wide-leg pants. They have a comfy elastic waistband, are super comfortable, and the length is great on me. I paired them with a basic black tee, an oversized black blazer by IRO, and combat boots. Throughout this post, you probably noticed the pattern…jeans + top + outerwear. This outfit breaks the mold a little bit and just adds some interest and fun to the mix!

Do you tend to reach for one outfit all the time in your closet? The same can be said for travel outfits. Our readers share their recommendations for the all time best travel outfits so you can feel comfortable and chic wherever you go. Find out what they said!

The Best Travel Outfits

As you can guess from our name, we’re all about traveling fashionably while still staying comfortable and weather-appropriate. We’re also big on capsule wardrobes and packing minimally.

With this in mind, we asked our readers the ultimate question:

If you could only wear one outfit every single day for an entire trip, what would it be?

Here’s what our readers say are the best travel outfits:

stylish tourist outfits

Cardigan | Top | Bag | Sunglasses | Earrings | Skirt | Lipstick | Flats

Feminine Chic

“ A sleeveless top, cardigan, black skirt, and ballet flats . I think that could be dressed up or down for most of my activities.”

If you prefer dresses and skirts to pants, this is a great travel outfit idea for summer or warmer spring and fall seasons. This type of outfit can easily be dressed up or down, so you can take it from day or night.

For cooler seasons, swap the sleeveless top for a sweater and add tights. Another reader recommended adding a scarf to this look for a pop of color or warmth.

stylish tourist outfits

Backpack | Boots | Dress | Lipstick | Leggings | Necklace | Palette

Winter Romance

“ Merino wool dress or tunic, black leggings, necklace, and ankle boots. ”

When we envision strolling down the old cobblestone streets of Europe, we think of this outfit. There’s nothing more comfy and cozy yet chic and sophisticated as a dress with tights and boots.

Even if you don’t normally wear dresses, a merino tunic with leggings is a nice alternative, and is comfy enough for plane rides while stylish enough for a dinner at a nice restaurant.

For ankle boots, go for a flat heel if you plan on walking a lot, or a short heel for dressier occasions.

You can still pack your light  in a small suitcase even when you travel in winter by using packing cubes to compress your clothing as shown in this video !

stylish tourist outfits

Hat | Jeans | Sunglasses | Bag | Top | Earrings | Sandals | Lipstick | Sunscreen | Cardigan

Beachside Casual

“ My distressed girlfriend jeans, a white or black tee, long open cardigan, and my flip flops !”

As much as dressing up is fun, there’s nothing better than jeans and a tee. Girlfriend jeans are the most comfortable jeans style. To keep from looking sloppy, go for a slimmer fitting tee.

When you’re by the beach or in locations like Florida or Southern California, take along a duster cardigan for warmth and flip flops for shoes.

And if you aren’t a fan of jeans, another reader recommended swapping denim pants for a maxi skirt.

stylish tourist outfits

Top  | Scarf | Longsleeve | Bag | Earrings |  Leggings  | Spray |  Boots

Airplane Comfort

“ Comfy leggings, a soft material t-shirt, ankle boots, and my Icebreaker long-sleeve shirt layered over the t-shirt in case it gets cold.”

Planes are notoriously horrible in terms of temperature. Sometimes it’s freezing, while other times it’s stuffy and hot. This outfit is the perfect solution.

We recommend workout-type leggings, which help you keep a steadier body temperature. The t-shirt will keep you comfy if it gets warm. If it’s cold, layer with the long-sleeve shirt.

Ankle boots will keep your feet warm, too. For an easier trip through security, go for a slip-on or zip style bootie so you can quickly slip them on or off. Or, pull on some compression socks for comfort.

stylish tourist outfits

Cardigan  | Watch |  Top  |  Earrings  | Sunglasses | Shoes |  Bag  |  Jeans

Sporty and Stylish

“ Jeans, a tee, a boyfriend cardigan, and Superga tennis shoes .”

So many readers recommended the ultimate three-piece outfit formula: jeans, a tee, and sneakers. One recommended black jeans with a white v-neck tee for classic sophistication. Or, go for more colorful options if you’re traveling to South America, Spain, or another location known for color.

When it gets cool, layer with a boyfriend cardigan or an open chambray button down top.

And for sneakers, we can’t get enough of Superga . White is perfect for a preppy style, while black or grey is great if you’re worried about getting them dirty.

stylish tourist outfits

Bracelet | Sunglasses | Sandals | Dress | Lip Balm | Necklace |  Bag

Fashion Meets Function

“If I had to choose just one outfit, I’d go for a simple black dress and Birkenstocks with my favorite leather fringe necklace .”

A black dress is the perfect combination of fashion and function. Black never goes out of style, and you can go longer without washing it. You can easily transform it with jewelry and scarves.

As for shoes, we love Birkenstocks! They’re the comfiest sandals with amazing support. There are so many styles, too, so there’s something for everyone.

stylish tourist outfits

Blouse | Coat | Scarf | Lipstick |  Bag  | Flats | Pants

Classic Sophistication

“ Black ankle-length pants, a white button down blouse, ballet flats, a trench coat and silk scarf .”

When you’re traveling to France or Italy, what better than to take a styling cue from Audrey Hepburn! A white-button down is always a classic option, and there are a number of non-ironing styles, too.

Another reader recommended this same outfit but swapped the flats for loafers and the black pants for dark skinny jeans.

I find it almost impossible to withstand the cold (-2-10), specifically in England, by wearing tights under a dress. I’ve tried thermal with jeans, freezing cold still. I’ve tried fleece lined pants, still very cold. I pair them with tall leather boots. I’m allergic to wool, so wool base layer is out. What can I do to keep my legs warm if I choose to wear tights? I was thinking thermal under the dress, but then I’ll bulk up and the “look” isn’t quite going to be there. ?

Alex

Hi Eunice, thanks for your question! For other options please take a look at these posts for some ideas: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/tights-for-women/ https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-pack-for-cold-weather/ https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-pack-for-cold-weather/ Hope this helps 🙂

Thank you, Alex. I’ve been following your page for sometime now and have benefitted greatly from the articles I’ve read. This is still very tricky for me. What I meant is that if I still choose to wear a woollen dress, yet still feel freezing cold with fleece lined tights, do you think it’ll work if I wear another layer of thermal under the tights? Wouldn’t that bulk up, hence less attractive looking? I don’t have ultra slim legs to begin with ?

Hi Eunice, If you’re wearing a dress I’d wear a pair of regular black tights under a pair of fleece or warm leggings. It’s warmer than you’d think :). Hope this helps!

Sue martin

I’m going premium flight to Barbados and I want to wear a dress with 3” wedges, I’ll change my footwear for the flight. I’m 5’1 and size 16. I’m aware that I’m limited but I’m going to find a creaseless fabric probably navy spot or tan. I fancy midi length. Have you any ideas please? I’m 61 years of age but still like to dress trendy.

Hi Sue, thank you for your question. Have a look at this article for some different options for dresses: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/cute-summer-dresses-for-women/ I would highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post your question there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers of all ages that have the best advice and recommendations to share. I Travel 5 Times a Year—These Easy Outfits Have Never Once Failed Me

Lauren Adhav

As a semi-recent  Los Angeles transplant, I've made so many travel plans over the past two years to take advantage of my new West Coast life, whether it's an international flight to  Tokyo or multiday road trip to Sea Ranch, just north of San Francisco. And when I was living in New York City, a quick four-day trip across the Atlantic to  London or  Paris felt like a breeze. Then there are the long-haul flights I've done from L.A. to Monte Carlo and from Orlando to Hong Kong that take up to a full day of travel. And I've done all this with just a carry-on , mind you, so it's safe to say that I'm kind of a travel and packing expert. This is why I rounded up 20 of the best travel outfits if you're sitting on a plane, in a car, or walking 10 miles in a day to explore your vacation destination.

In theory, your vacations are filled with a never-ending supply of chic new outfits that are more than deserving of a few Instagrams, but the reality is that your  travel outfits need to be equal parts stylish  and  comfortable. Yes, achieving that balance is possible, and we have the stylish looks of the below fashion girls to prove that looking good and dressing functionally can coexist.

From roomy jeans and breezy dresses to versatile boots and bold sneakers that can withstand any mileage, scroll down for 20 travel outfits you'll want to copy for any upcoming out-of-office dates.

Coat + White Tee + Jeans

travel-outfits-225762-1705552171314-main

Ogling this Rimowa suitcase situation. But a shaggy jacket and unique jeans will dress up any white tee.

Shop the key pieces:

Ena Pelly + April Faux Fur Teddy Jacket

Jacket + Bold Sneakers + Comfy Pants

travel-outfits-225762-1705552164628-main

Comfortable pants and shoes are key whether you're on a plane or walking 10,000+ steps, but they don't have to feel drab. Add pops of color with your accessories.

Onitsuka Tiger + Mexico 66

Matching Sweatsuit + Sneakers

travel-outfits-225762-1705552177349-main

A matching sweatsuit is a must in any wardrobe. With a fashionable pair of sneakers, you can wear it both on and off the plane.

Reformation + Classic Crew Sweatshirt

Quarter-Zip Sweater + Long Coat

travel-outfits-225762-1705552184462-main

Bundle up in a monochrome 'fit like this cream quarter-zip and coordinating coat. Finish it off by adding bottoms with stretch and a trusty pair of shoes.

Zara + Soft Hooded Coat

Bomber Jacket + Jeans + Shoulder Bag

travel-outfits-225762-1705552190005-main

For a day in a new city where you're constantly moving, it's best to stick to the basics like a roomy shoulder bag, your go-to pair of jeans, and a zip-up jacket for transitional temps.

Lioness + Bomber Jacket

Leggings + Oversize Sweater

travel-outfits-225762-1705552194005-main

There's something about gray that makes any outfit look so much more comfortable. Throw on a cream sweater with your gray leggings for some contrast. Then put on your headphones so no one bothers you while you're waiting to board.

Nordstrom + Oversize Wool & Cashmere Sweater

Track Pants + Statement Coat + Flats

travel-outfits-225762-1705552198244-main

Track pants are a staple that can look dressy given the right styling. Take a cue from Helena and add the one statement coat you packed this trip with a pair of sporty bottoms.

BDG + Melanie Faux Fur Denim Jacket

Jumpsuit + Big Tote

travel-outfits-225762-1705552203040-main

A one-and-done kind of outfit is ideal for travel. When you have a jam-packed day that starts when the sun rises, you don't want to waste any time picking out what to wear. This is where a jumpsuit or boilersuit comes in handy.

Amo + Skip Jumpsuit

Midi Skirt + Crossbody Bag + Sweater

travel-outfits-225762-1705552207053-main

A crossbody you can keep close to you will ensure your belongings are secure on public transportation. An A-line skirt, a sweater, and statement kicks complete the look.

Cos + Ripple Crossbody

Flowy Top + Wide-Leg Jeans + Flats

travel-outfits-225762-1705552216115-main

I tend to turn to less-fitted silhouettes on vacay to keep things easy and effortless. A flowy top and wide-leg jeans are just the solution.

Levi's + Ribcage Wide Leg Jeans

Maxi Skirt + Knit Polo

travel-outfits-225762-1705552233832-main

For an ensemble that looks pulled together but actually takes five minutes to put on, a knit polo and maxi skirt are all you need. Add your crossbody or top-handle bag to really level things up.

Mango + Long Knitted Skirt

Breezy Pants + White Button-Down

travel-outfits-225762-1705552237648-main

Don't deny yourself roomy silhouettes! This is the kind of outfit that can take you off the plane and straight to lunch if you don't have time to decompress and change outfits at your hotel.

H&M + Oxford Shirt

Quilted Coat + Shoulder Bag + Chunky Sneakers

travel-outfits-225762-1705552245134-main

A coat that doubles as a blanket and/or a pillow on the plane and one you can wear on the daily is a great travel piece if you're heading somewhere chilly. Pack a pair of chunky dad sneakers and a shoulder bag, and you're ready for a day of exploring.

Everlane + The ReNew Long Liner

Jacket + Plaid Skirt + Sneakers

travel-outfits-225762-1705552248705-main

Going somewhere with pretty mild weather? Opt for plaid skirt and sneakers. You can add a bomber in this rich brown shade if the temperature fluctuates.

Mango + 100% Leather Bomber Jacket

Knit Sweater + Jeans + Bold Accessories

travel-outfits-225762-1705552252561-main

A cozy sweater, straight-leg jeans, and red accessories are an outfit formula you'll want to remember. And definitely make sure to stop by a café while you're out to fuel up before you hit the pavement again.

RE/DONE + Crewneck Cable Pullover

Wrap Coat + Comfortable Boots

travel-outfits-225762-1705552259889-main

Rainy weather won't get you down if you have a fab coat to stay dry in. A trench or raincoat is a must if it's a rainy forecast during your travels, but you can liven it up with bright footwear.

Good American + Chino Trench Coat

Coat + Sneakers + Baggy Jeans

travel-outfits-225762-1705552265647-main

Layer up with a scarf and beanie if your long coat isn't enough to keep you warm. Layering pieces that can go with several outfits are always great to pack, and as someone who lives in sunny Los Angeles, I now relish the trips where I can finally pack my versatile winter clothes.

New Balance x Ganni + 1906R

Track Jacket + Comfy Jeans

travel-outfits-225762-1705552269688-main

I've worn Adidas shorts on so many trips now, and I've found that sporty pieces are the best to pack. They are durable, made to withstand the elements, and come in handy when you start sweating from all those steps you're getting in. A track jacket is a great piece to wear over a T-shirt or tank. Simply add some fun jeans and a colorful bag, and you'll feel like a street style star wherever you are.

Lacoste + Logo Monogram Stripe Track Jacket

White Blouse + Black Maxi + Sneakers

travel-outfits-225762-1705552433277-main

A sheer white top is a godsend for those extremely hot travel days. Also, I've worn this black cotton maxi skirt on countless trips. It's one of the best travel items I own thanks to the breezy fit and elastic waist.

Doen + The Jane Blouse

Cutout Dress + Sandals + Net Bag

travel-outfits-225762-1705552407610-main

If it's more of a beach vacation, you definitely want to travel with some comfortable sandals and a larger tote that can fit all your beach-day belongings. I find that these net bags fold very flat in a suitcase, but they can fit a seemingly endless amount.

Lauren Adhav is a freelance fashion editor based in Los Angeles. Originally from Orlando, Florida, she always wanted to work at a fashion magazine. After finally getting an internship at Town & Country in 2015, she moved to New York City and continued to get her footing in the industry with stints at Cosmopolitan , W magazine, Harper's Bazaar , and Moda Operandi. In 2017, she returned to Cosmo full time, starting off as the beauty and fashion editorial assistant and working her way to fashion editor. She contributed to both the website and print issues, pitching new ideas, forecasting trends, covering red carpet events, and informing the overall coverage and brand voice. After five years in NYC, she moved to the West Coast for the sunshine and the change of pace. As a freelance fashion editor, she still contributes to Cosmo and now Who What Wear. She's always trying to get ahead of the next big trend before it goes mainstream and loves discovering fashion brands with a unique point of view (Chopova Lowena, Sandy Liang, and Bode being some of her current favorites). She also spends an unhealthy amount of time online shopping for the perfect piece, and now that she's in L.A., she's rediscovering her soft spot for malls. On the weekends, you can find her walking around the Silver Lake Reservoir, trying to catch up on her tan at Venice Beach, and probably ordering a Chinese chicken salad at Joan's on Third.

Maybe you don't need that wrap in the warm weather outside, but you'll step inside to the freezing cold air conditioning and thank yourself for being prepared. No matter where you go, remember that life is all about the journey, not the destination. You might as well look and feel good all the while. So grab these smart travel outfit ideas and bon voyage! ✈️

These rank at the top of best jogger lists because they truly are that comfortable. The fabric is super soft and the semi-relaxed fit lets you move around with ease. With over a dozen colors to choose from, you can go basic with black or gray or pick your favorite color. Either way, you'll never want to take them off.

This tee is a one-size-fits-most powerhouse. It's oversized without looking sloppy and has comfy 3/4-length sleeves and high side slits for a fashionable touch. The 100% cotton slub fabric is airy and light, making it perfect for wearing loose, tucked in at the front, or knotted at the hip. You'll want one in every color!

If you tend to get a little chilly when the air conditioning hits, you need something to lay over your shoulders and arms. Enter: this stunning cashmere and silk blend scarf! You can wear it as is, draped over your outfit, or as a scarf under a jacket.

If you need an extra layer but prefer sleeves, go with an open cardigan style. This wrap is made of breathable, stretchy fabric and it has pockets! It also comes in over a dozen colors and is available in sizes XXS to 3X in regular, petite, and tall lengths.

You can absolutely splurge on an expensive pair of leggings if you live for that kind of comfort. But when Amazon has a buttery soft pair for under $25, that means you can buy an extra one for when you get to where you're going, too. With over 20 color options, you'll have plenty of outfits to coordinate.

The great thing about a dress is you can go straight to the beach or brunch as soon as you arrive to your destination. This one is made of a soft jersey knit blend with a tie waist that you can make as tight or as loose as you want. The fabric also has UPF protection so you really can wear it straight to the sand!

A casual look just isn't quite complete without a go-to hoodie. Reformation offers an oversized yet stylish option, available in a neutral almond shade and basic black. It pairs perfectly with their boyfriend sweatpant for a matching set, but will also go with everything you have in your closet.

If you want to buy a matching set to coordinate, this option makes the list of best loungewear because of the 17,000-plus reviews, 25-plus color options, and soft, stretchy fabric. Tuck in the front of the top and scrunch up the cuffs on the bottom a little bit for a super trendy look.

Oh, you want more matching stuff, you say? How about this four-piece set? It comes with super soft cotton/modal blend reversible tank, turtleneck tunic, pants, and a duster. You'll also get a travel pouch to hold them all...so it's actually a five-piece set!

Sometimes the problem with traveling from one place to another is the drastic change in the weather. Go prepared with a packable jacket. This bestseller is water-resistant, has a hood, and wraps into a tiny little pouch for easy storage. It's also available in ten other colors!

Dr. Scholl's Knee-High Compression Socks

Dr. Scholl's Knee-High Compression Socks

If you're getting on a plane, compression socks will work wonders for your circulation, especially on long trips. The Perfect Pant

The Perfect Pant

Does the perfect pant exist? Spanx sure thinks so! This high-waisted flare has four-way stretch, hidden shaping technology, and doesn't have a pesky zipper or button. Just pull them on and you're ready to go from travel to meeting in no time. Oh, and they are machine washable, too.

Untuckit Button-Down Shirt

Are there any specific patterns or prints that are commonly associated with tourist attire?

Hawaiian shirts are a classic tourist staple, known for their loud and colorful prints. Floral, animal, or geometric patterns are commonly associated with tourist attire. 25 Chic travel outfits: How to look stylish on vacation

How to look stylish on vacation

Fall happens to be one of my favorite times of year to plan trips and vacations. Coincidentally, also one of my favorite seasons to dress for. (So, hello chic travel outfits!)

You have the hustle of summer vacation behind you,  you’ve got more time to spare, not to mention–the weather is cooler in warmer climates and much better for walking around and exploring all day! (But don’t worry, if you’re heading somewhere with warm weather, I’ve got you covered too–I cover all seasons and weather in this post!)

Maybe you’re prepping for a European adventure and need some inspo for the long flight ahead of you. (Also, you must read my Europe packing list !) Perhaps you’re headed to Cabo and need to know how to look stylish on vacation without sweating through everything you packed.

Maybe you’re planning a business trip and you need some casual but polished outfit ideas you can mix and match? (A work capsule wardrobe of sorts ?)

Hopefully you’ll come away with a few ideas you can incorporate into your own personal style, no matter what your trip calls for.

Keep reading for my best tips for putting together chic travel outfits, my recommendations for the best travel clothes, plus over 25 options of cute travel outfits to copy! (Make sure to bookmark this page for your next trip!)

First, let’s get into my tips!

How to look stylish on vacation:

My 7 tips for putting together chic travel outfits in 2023-2024.

flat shoes for travel

#1: For the most chic travel outfits, plan outfits around your shoes

The easiest place to start when you’re building stylish outfits for a vacation or a trip is  shoes . This is true especially in winter, when you’re packing and coordinating heavy shoes like boots, which IMO also happen to be the hardest kinds of shoes to style because you tend to need different pants for different boots and vice versa. This is easier in the summer months because you can easily pack 4-5 pairs of sandals or ballet flats and take up little to no room in a suitcase. The overarching rule of thumb here is that neutral colors are your friend, as it’s easier to mix and match to create the perfect outfit with very little fuss.

Here’s how I’d typically approach packing shoes by season…

One pair of cute white sneakers or even slip-on sneakers (worn on plane–maximum comfort is key here), 1-2 pair of flat sandals (usually in a nude color, secondary color would likely be black, depending on what other clothes I’m packing), maybe one pair of ballet flats, which are a great option if you’re packing for moderate temps and an occasion where you want to look polished, but don’t want to wear heels.

One pair of cute white sneakers (worn on plane), one pair flat or low-heel booties, one pair of ballet flats, one pair of loafers

One pair cute white sneakers, two pairs booties (neutral and black)–at least one of these pairs should be water resistant or waterproof. One pair of flats or loafers.

Winter: (Assuming very cold weather/snow/slush/rain)

Two pairs booties–at least one of these pairs should be water resistant or waterproof. I typically pack the least amount of shoes in winter as they take up the most room AND I also have to account for super bulky layers in a suitcase–I don’t have space for multiple shoes AND multiple sweaters, jackets, etc.

Able jumpsuit travel outfit

Old Able jumpsuit ( similar here ) // white court sneakers ( reviewed here )

#2: One piece outfits are your best friend (dresses, jumpsuits)

I LOVE one-piece outfits, and I think this applies particularly in the summer months, when all you really need to create a great outfit is a dress or a jumpsuit. Summer months are PRIME for this–if I’m heading to a tropical vacation, I am packing mostly dresses made of breathable fabrics and maybe a jumpsuit or two! Since you aren’t “mixing and matching” anything (because, it’s one piece) go wild–prints (florals! stripes!) fun cut-outs–whatever!

The only rule for these items is that they MUST be able to be dressed up and down, and worn with multiple types of shoes and accessories. (In my case, this usually means something can be worn with sneakers for a casual look to walk around in all day with a pair of small subtle hoops and maybe a scarf, and then swapped for a dressier shoe–a pair of sandals for example–and a pair of statement earrings, for going out to dinner/drinks.)

I think this is harder to do in cold weather, but it can absolutely still be done! For example, I wore an olive utility jumpsuit multiple times for different occasions last year in Ireland where it was wet and chilly. It looked cute with both a denim jacket and a leather jacket layered over the top. A “one and done” outfit makes packing considerably easier, and also allows you to pack a  lot  less stuff!

How to look stylish on vacation

Sweater:  similar here  // Pants:  Everlane straight leg crop pants in Sandstone  (TTS), similar here // Jacket:  ABLE Maha leather jacket (I sized up so it’s roomier but it’s TTS.), similar here  // Scarf: Old, similar h ere // Sunglasses: Ray ban // Headband:  similar here

#3: Consider a color scheme and lean into neutral colors

Now, this only applies to things that need to be mixed and matched. I don’t count “one piece outfits” as needing to be part of a color scheme, because if you’re packing only neutral accessories and you have a one-piece outfit, it doesn’t really matter what color it is, you know? But if you’re packing mostly tops and bottoms, it will be  much  easier to put stylish outfits together if you have a color scheme in mind when packing!

Now, this doesn’t necessarily HAVE to mean you should only pack neutral colors, but I find that it’s often easier to gravitate toward neutrals for my main pieces and incorporate pops of color with accessories, lipstick, and shoes. I’m always itching for more color in the spring and summer, whereas for fall and winter, I usually feel most chic and put together in minimalist color schemes, like creams, camels and black, and using patterns and accessories to make my outfits most visually interesting!

Want to strike a balance somewhere in the middle? Consider neutrals along with a more muted version of a color–for example, a mustard, deep burgundy, or burnt orange for fall, which pairs easily with blacks and browns, or a muted dusty pink for dusty blue for spring, which pairs easily with the same neutrals–white, black, brown.

How to look stylish on vacation

J.Crew turtleneck (old): similar here // Skirt: similar here // Zara coat: similar here //  Everlane Day Boots (their city boots are also very similar with amazing reviews.) They make AMAZINGLY comfortable shoes!

#4: Lean into prints (especially stripes!)

I have never met a stripe I didn’t love, and it’s rare that I take a trip or vacation without at least a couple of striped items in my suitcase. (This is especially true in the fall and winter months, when I’m dressing in layers!) Why? Because stripes just make everything look a little more pulled together, visually interesting, and stylish! They’re not trendy, so they’re always in style, and they look a lot more intentional than just a plain old t-shirt.

A pattern of any kind is a great way to make any outfit more fashionable, so after considering your color scheme, start thinking of options that fit within that color scheme that  also  have a bit of pattern! The easiest way I find to accomplish this is with t-shirts, sweaters, and scarves.

What about mixing prints? I give that a hard YES. Just make sure when you’re mixing prints to vary the scale and choose coordinating/complimentary colors. One print should be larger and bolder and one print should be smaller and more subtle. (You can see examples above where I’m wearing patterned hair scarves with my striped tops!) Even a floral print can be a surprisingly versatile option!

Amazon Dress and head scarf

#5: Always pack a scarf or two

I’m guessing you’ve gathered by now that I wear a LOT of scarves on vacation. In fact, it’s my #1 style hack. If you take nothing away from this post, I hope this is what you remember! Truly, the easiest way to spice up any outfit–day or night–is with a scarf. Tie one in your hair to keep it out of your face on a hot day, disguise unwashed hair (bc who has time to wash and style on vacation?!) or just as a way to make your outfit more interesting. For cooler weather, I love a cute bandana or neck scarf!

Leather jacket and jeans outfit

#6: When in doubt, a great lipstick makes everything stylish:

Exhibit A: Candid photo taken in Dublin where I hadn’t washed my (air dried) hair in a couple of days, and I’m wearing a very simple outfit of a black tee, black Moto jacket, and jeans–yet somehow, the red lipstick makes it all look intentional. 😂 I swear lipstick can take the most boring, even disheveled comfortable travel look and make it “perfectly undone.” Some of my favorite lipsticks are  Ilia  (they have amazing shades but if you want something a little more subtle–Cinnabar is an amazing brick red!) and  Merit’s lipsticks  that make your lips pop without being too much to wear during the day!

#7: Don’t forget about coordinating outer layers + accessories!

Just like you want to ensure all your tops and bottoms can be mixed and matched, ensure that your outer layers can also be worn with everything you’re packing!

This doesn’t mean you can’t wear a statement color–for example, the coat I wore in Lisbon my first time visiting was a mustardy yellow camel color–it added so much punch to my outfits (and photos!) but still coordinated with everything else I had in my suitcase.

Same with my favorite dusty blue coat–it’s neutral enough to where it doesn’t clash with anything, and it adds a lot of personality (and of course, extra warmth) to all my outfits! If you want to bring a bright red crossbody purse–go for it, as long as you can wear it with everything else in your wardrobe!

Like I said, accessories are the easiest ways to add color into your outfits.

Stripes are always a good idea when it comes to chic travel outfits! Here I paired them with a white mini skirt (could also do shorts, white shorts or denim!) and of course, the hair scarf. Never not wearing a hair scarf on a Europe trip (especially when it’s hot!)

On my recent Napa trip I brought almost exclusively one-piece outfits. (Dresses and rompers!) I loved this one that I rented from Rent the Runway–I loved it so much I bought it! I barely needed any accessories–the colorful pattern did the talking! Renting is always a great option to ensure you are well-stocked with chic travel outfits without risk of breaking the bank!

A swing dress in breathable fabrics and red ballet flats:

An easy way to incorporate color into your travel wardrobe is with your accessories–including shoes! I love a little red ballet flat. Surprisingly, red goes with a lot of other colors–it’s easy to pair with other things in your wardrobe. You can read my Rothys review here!

The Nap Dress: one of the most versatile pieces you’ll pack for warm weather

Hill House Ellie Nap Dress  (this color/pattern is a few years old but they have so many cute colorways!)

The Hill House nap dress: my summer wardrobe work horse. I own it in 3 colors. I wore it day and night in August in Lisbon where it was sweltering! Their summery dresses are made of lightweight fabrics, and in my opinion, a great piece to always have in your suitcase for warm climates.

The perfect versatile blouse for a classic look:

Chic casual basics in Napa (from my first trip in February a couple years ago!) This top has become one of my bestsellers for good reason–it just goes with everything! Here I’m styling it with jeans but would also look cute with wide-leg pants, trousers, and I’ve worn it in the summer with shorts!

the Sezane Gaspard cardigan:

Silk Scarf // Button Up Cardigan // Denim // White Court Sneakers

Okay, you get it, right? Neck scarves are cute. 😂 Another tip: I love bringing a cardigan along in my suitcase because it’s both a first layer (buttoned up the front) and a second layer (unbuttoned, over a tee or blouse!) The Sezane Gaspard cardigan that I’m wearing here is major mainstay in my fall/winter wardrobe and I own it in two colors!

A statement coat:

Here’s another example of a neutral but statement coat. I love this coat (got it from Mango last year) and it goes with so many things. I call this a “dusty seafoam” color and I think it makes the most basic outfits so cute. Also, another scarf, but a winter version. (Also Sezane! Don’t sleep on their accessories!)

Warm and cozy layers:

Chic travel outfits for winter: Quebec City–how to look stylish on vacation when its freezing

Weatherproof Boots // Weatherproof Parka // Layers: Turtleneck !

From my trip to Quebec City with Neal a few years back. Dressing for the coldest weather (we’re talking negative wind chill!) can be the most challenging of all, but I have one tip: black, black, and black. It’s the most guaranteed way to still feel chic even if you have to wear 5 layers. Also: coordinating your hats, gloves, and boots. Make sure you’re factoring your accessories into your outfits–it helps avoid that “little kid on the playground” look. I brought one black beanie and one white/neutral beanie and I always felt warm and coordinated. And my warmest black parka. (Getting a slimmer design also helps!)

Best airport/travel outfits for long travel days and long-haul flights:

I couldn’t publish this post without touching on chic travel outfits for day-of travel. If you’ve got a long journey ahead of you, the last thing you want to wear is a pair of–gasp– jeans! The perfect travel outfit can make those long haul flights go a lot quicker, so it’s worth a bit of planning ahead.

Where to begin? Coordinating loungewear makes some of the best travel outfits. Another great combo? Comfy black leggings and a cute tee that you’ll also get a lot of wear out of during your trip!

If it’s summer, a comfortable dress can actually make a great travel outfit too (I wear the famed Amazon mumu on the plane a lot) and a bonus: a dress is likely something you’ll wear over and over during your travels to warmer climates.

Another tip: consider easy on/off shoes for airport security (or plan ahead and wear socks so you aren’t barefoot on the airport floor!)

This affordable Amazon sweatshirt and matching pair of sweatpants are two of my bestsellers. Wear them together or separately to make multiple comfy airport outfits

Quince cashmere cardigan (reviewed here!) Lululemon leggings (although for a long flight I’d choose something less supportive, like their Align leggings or my fave budget-dupes, the Aerie offline leggings ), Bombas socks , Kizik Lima sneakers , Lululemon city adventurer fanny pack , Amazon baseball cap

Delsey Paris Chatalet suitcase

An oldie but goodie–this is still a go-to outfit formula for me: striped tee ( this is my fave ), loose cardigan (I love Quince’s cardigans for staple sweaters–great quality for the price!), and comfy black leggings . I also love my Delsey Paris Chatalet suitcases (reviewed here ) if you’re looking for a suitcase recommendation!

WHEW, you made it to the bottom! I hope you’re feeling much more prepared for your trip. Now you know how to look stylish on vacation no matter where you’re going! Safe travels and have fun!

7 Convenient and Comfortable Travel Outfits

You can't control flight delays, but you can plan the best possible outfit to tackle the journey.

Clothing, Product, Hand luggage, Bag, Baggage, Beige, Sleeve, Suitcase,

Every item on this page was chosen by a Town & Country editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

Choose a Comfortable Staple

Let's be honest: comfort is the number one priority when planning a travel outfit. But just because something is comfortable doesn't mean it's not fashionable. Choose one chic staple item that serves as your go-to when planning for a flight, like this navy jumpsuit that we'd happily wear on a non-travel day. Pair it with your favorite sandals (if you're heading to a warm destination, that is) and voila: travel outfit complete.

Pair a Dress With Practical Shoes

A dress is a perfect option for travelers who want to look a bit more put together during their flight. But heels are really a tough sell for a day that consists of running through the airport, getting shuffled through security, and squeezing into an airplane seat. Opt for a pair of chic sneakers instead, like these designs by Tory Burch, that pair fabulously with a dress but are still practical and comfortable.

Optimize Coziness With a Coordinated Sweatsuit

A long-haul flight is exactly the right time to dust off that coordinated sweatsuit you promised to never wear in public. And if you're going to wear a sweatsuit during a busy travel day, make it a chic and cozy cashmere and silk getup like this Something Navy ensemble.

Layers on Layers

If you're traveling with a sweater or coat to a colder destination, the best way to transport them anywhere is simply by wearing them on the flight. Your bulkiest sweater or warmest winter coat will no doubt take up space in your suitcase, so eliminate that issue all together by layering them on during your journey. That means you might be sweating through the terminal, but remember: your coat will double as a blanket once you're on the plane.

Jeans and Cute Flats Will Never Fail

Why not rely on a classic combination on a travel day? Comfortable jeans and a cute pair of flats will never fail as a travel outfit staple. Opt for jeans that are high-waisted and cropped to maximize comfort, and pick a pair of flats you'll wear non-stop once you arrive at your destination.

Leggings Will Not Disappoint

The great debate on athleisure-as-real-clothing may linger on, but there's one point we can all agree on: leggings are the most comfortable bottoms to fly in. Try a standard pair of black leggings with a cozy sweater or jacket, like the green one here, with sneakers for your next travel day. You won't regret it.

Bringing Accessories? Try Wearing Them All

The best way to travel with hats, sunglasses, scarves, and any other accessories you're bringing on a trip is simply by wearing them. Yes, that means you'll be way overdressed for the flight, but truthfully: wouldn't you rather your smaller accessories actually arrive at your destination than get lost as TSA inevitably searches through your bags?

Stylish travel clothes for women that are chic and comfortable

by Sylvia | Mar 11, 2023 | 9 comments

No matter whether you are travelling by air, land or sea, you will want to look effortlessly chic while ensuring you are comfortable throughout your entire journey. Below, you will find the best travel clothes for women and outfit inspiration for all of your trips, whether you’re taking a quick road trip or a long haul vacation.

If you are going on a trip soon, we’d love to hear about where you are going. Read on for a travel capsule as well as the best airport outfits.

Travel clothes for women

I normally travel a lot and love to share some of my tips on how to build the perfect fashionable travel wardrobe to make fashionable travel easy.

I believe that dressing in a stylish way for travel is just as comfortable and easy as flying in an old t-shirt and cargo pants or sweats.

But one of these two options makes a better first impression! Don’t worry, I’m not asking you to wear anything too fussy or high maintenance.

In fact in the image a little further below below I’m wearing a t-shirt and pants, but I’ve elevated my style through the print on my top and by adding silver shoes.

Travel clothes for women: best travel outfits

You may consider getting a few designated travel outfits. Investing in stylish travel clothes for women can help you to put together a “stylish travel clothes uniform”. You’ll also find your travel outfits work well for day-to-day wear and running errands.

Before you build the perfect women’s travel wardrobe for your needs, consider these 3 points below when choosing your own signature travel outfits:

Best travel outfits for planes

1. fabrics for traveling.

The material of your clothing makes all the difference in the world when choosing travel clothes for women! Natural fibers like cotton and linen wrinkle easily, so you may wish to avoid wearing 100% linen or cotton fabrics if that bothers you. The best wrinkle-resistant fabric options include:

  • Polyester (although you may wish to consider whether you will be too hot as this doesn’t breathe)

A blend of any of these with a natural fiber like cotton would be perfect, giving you the stretch you need for long period of sitting while still looking crisp.

I’m wearing comfy airy pants (similar here and here ) and I make the outfit more stylish with Rollies shoes (similar pairs here and here ). Also check out this similar tee and suitcase .

When it’s a bit cooler I will add a short stylish jacket too like this one .

2. The best fit for your travel wear

Loose fitting, easy tailoring is the best choice when traveling, especially regarding your pants or bottoms of choice.

You don’t want to deal with tight, constricting pants when you’re in a small cabin for a few hours.

Choosing materials with some stretch to them further adds to your comfort level. Eileen Fisher is a wonderful source for travel clothes!

3. What to wear when traveling – Color

Go with patterns or darker tones when traveling.

You’re likely to be crammed into a public seat that may not be 100% clean. And coffee spills from those wobbly tray tables happen.

If you’re traveling to a foreign country, darker or earthy, neutral colors help you blend in and look more low-key, too. Save the white clothes for when you get there.

Travel clothes for women: must-haves all stylish ladies should travel with

Now that you’re thinking about the best travel clothes for women, below are some of the best options for pants, tops, dresses, skirts, shoes and accessories to choose from this season, as well as a travel capsule wardrobe.

1. The best travel purse ever

Let’s start with your bag. Your carry-on purse for travel needs to hold more than you normally would carry.

Documents, valuables, your iPad or some magazines and maybe a small makeup kit are some things you should have in your bag.

A tote is great for travel because it’s so easy to load up. But a crossbody bag is also excellent, especially for keeping it secure when you need your hands free for other things.

Safety and security will be a key priority when you travel. You want to make sure that even if you are in busy markets or in places where pick pocketing may be a problem, that your belongings are secure.

The Travelon brand is highly recommended for travel bags with anti-theft features.

Or, you could try the Baggallini crossbody (below), which comes in a good choice of colors, and has an anti-theft design. Reviewers say it is the perfect size and weight for travel.

The TUMI tote is another stylish option that would be perfect for weekends at home or travelling.

And, for packing your suitcase, investing in some packing cubes means you can easily organize everything so you can put together your outfits upon arrival without any rummaging through everything you’ve packed.

2. Travel scarf or shawl

A scarf or shawl ALWAYS travels with me, even in summer. Airlines don’t hand out blankets or pillows on flights as much anymore, particularly if you’re traveling in short-haul or domestic economy.

A scarf or shawl will keep you warm and comfortable, work as an airplane pillow when rolled up and will add some chic to your outfit when you arrive.

A blanket style could be the perfect option because you can use it as a blanket or head rest on the plane. Then, when you arrive, you can use as a shawl to keep you warm on chilly evenings, or as a beach towel or a picnic blanket.

Or another great choice, particularly if you are heading to a destination where you don’t want your valuables in plain sight if to choose a travel scarf with a hidden pocket, such as the infinity scarf (below).

3. Best travel shoes

Choose a pair of flats that are comfortable.

Bear in mind that you are likely to have to take your shoes off to go through security. So, you may prefer to have a slip-on style rather than laces.

I would make sure your travel shoes double up as really comfortable walking shoes. The Sperry sneaker (below) come in a choice of colors and neutrals, and feature a molded footbed so they should keep you comfortable while travelling and sightseeng.

A pair of white sneakers is a classic that will go with everything from your shorts to your summer dresses, and the Vionic sneakers (below) also have great arch support.

We also love the slip-ons below which come in a good choice of colors and will keep your feet cool and feature an interesting, on-trend sole. Slip-ons are a great idea at the airport in case you need to take your shoes off for security.

4. Women’s travel shirts

A great button-down isn’t just a good travel option for men. It can look great worn with pants for your journey. Then, you can wear with shorts or over your swimsuit or your dress as a cover-up when you arrive for your vacation.

5. Travel t-shirt

T-shirts can be the basic core of any wardrobe, and your travel closet is no exception. You can wear them to travel in and team them with shorts and skirts when you arrive. Or, you can wear it instead of a pajama top to sleep in.

I’d stick to quality fabric without any logos on the front, so you can team with lots of pieces from your suitcase. Opt for something you can dress up with a statement necklace or scarf, or down just with sneakers and shorts.

6. Flying clothes: Travel cardigan

No matter where you are traveling, you are likely to need a cover-up in case it gets a little chilly on your journey, or for when the sun goes down in the evening.

If you choose a cardigan in a neutral shade, it should go with most outfits in your suitcase.

7. Lightweight women’s jacket for traveling

You won’t want to be taking too many jackets on vacation with you as they take up suitcase space, so make sure the one you do choose is comfortable and versatile.

Of course, the best travel jacket for you will depend very much on where you are going. While a blazer will be perfect for the south of France, for example, you are unlikely to want such a dressed-up option on a safari in South Africa.

If you choose a blazer, I think you can wear it beautifully with pants and a pair of sneakers for the plane. Then, for a night out on vacation, you could team up with sandals or heels.

Natural fiber like linen will crease, but I think that’s part of the charm of linen blazers. Or you could opt for a piece with a wool mix for cooler climates, or in a polyester mix if you are worried about it creasing.

The J.Crew blazer (below) looks smart, but the relaxed linen fabric keeps it comfortable.

You could also think about a denim jacket, which would go well over your summer dresses.

8. The best women’s travel pants

Many of you will prefer to travel in a pair of pants rather than a dress. I would tend to avoid jeans as they aren’t particularly comfortable if you want to have a snooze on the plane!

A pair of drawstring pants, such as the ones by Lenny Niemeyer (below) is a good option for both traveling and sightseeing.

Lenny Niemeyer Swim Destinos Printed Drawstring Pants | 40plusstyle.com

It’s a good idea to look for pants that have an elasticated waist so you don’t feel constricted during your journey. Another option could be the wide leg pants (below) which should keep you cool if you’re heading off on a sunny vacation.

Or, how about choosing a comfy pair of leggings to travel in? You can wear it with a loose tunic to make sure you’re comfortable.

10. The perfect travel dresses

Do you prefer traveling in pants, or do you prefer the feeling of coolness and freedom you get from a comfortable dress?

If you do choose a dress, we would look for one in flexible, stretchy fabric such as jersey so you don’t feel restricted on your journey.

Susanne @textelle above (read her style interview here ) looks lovely in her print knee-length dress. You could always wear leggings underneath while on the plane.

11. Travel skirts

Skirts can be a great staple in your travel closet. You could opt for a cotton A-line knee-length style for an easy style to wear with sneakers. Midi or maxi lengths also look relaxed and stylish on vacation.

For traveling, we would stick with a knee-length or a midi. You don’t want trailing skirts to get stuck anywhere while you board and deal with your luggage.

I am visiting Portugal this June. I’m curious where you lived and if you have any “must see” places. Thank you.

Great decision! Portugal is beautiful. I still live here (in Luz, which I love) although I travel a lot but I’m here in spring and autumn. Honestly all of Portugal is beautiful so hopefully you have some time to explore. There are 3 articles where I talk about my experiences in Portugal on this page https://40plusstyle.com/?s=portugal

Sylvia, Where did you get that amazing tshirt you are wearing in your picture? I’m not a tshirt person but I would wear that one in a minute!

I got that from Zara a few seasons back.

If one is flying long-distance and has a problem with not just ankles but also feet swelling from extended sitting, be sure to wear shoes that allow for that. When I travelled overseas in winter months, I used to wear low-heeled boots that were a half- or full-size bigger, filled up with a couple layers of heavy socks. If my feet swelled in flight, I could always take off a pair of socks to accommodate them. (This layering also kept my feet warm and blister-free while doing a lot of walking after arrival.)

Just to let you know the clothing links for luxe dress and travel pants don’t work and an amazon search isn’t bringing them up.

Travel outfits

Introduction

As a travel enthusiast and advisor, I’ve been fortunate enough to explore some of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes, engage in thrilling activities, and immerse myself in diverse cultures. And let me tell you, choosing the right travel outfits is crucial to enhancing your overall experience. In this article, I’ll be sharing some valuable insights and suggestions to help you create practical and stylish travel outfits that will ensure you’re well-prepared for any adventure that comes your way.

Before we dive in, let’s first understand what travel outfits are and why they matter. Essentially, travel outfits are the clothing and accessories you wear during your journeys. But they’re not just about fashion – they need to cater to the specific demands of your travel destinations and activities. This means ensuring you stay comfortable, protected, and confident throughout your trip.

As someone who adores adventure and has encountered various travel scenarios, I can’t stress enough the importance of well-thought-out travel outfits. Whether you’re hiking in the mountains, snorkeling in turquoise waters, or exploring bustling city streets, having the right attire can make all the difference. So let’s get started on creating the perfect travel outfits for your next adventure!

Considerations for Choosing Travel Outfits

To create the perfect travel wardrobe, you must think about different things that affect what you wear. These things are:

Weather and Climate

Before heading to your destination, it’s essential to research the weather conditions and prepare accordingly. Packing appropriate clothing for each season is crucial in ensuring maximum comfort and adaptability throughout your trip. Whether you’re traveling to a hot or cold climate, having the right outfit can make all the difference.

For warmer regions, consider packing lightweight and breathable clothing to keep you cool and comfortable in the heat. From flowy dresses to breathable tops, there are plenty of options to choose from. On the other hand, if you’re headed to a colder climate, layering is key. This way, you can easily adjust your outfit to the changing temperatures throughout the day.

By taking the time to research and pack for the weather conditions, you’ll be able to fully enjoy your trip without any discomfort or inconvenience. So, be sure to check the forecast and pack accordingly!

Type and Duration of Travel

Before packing your bags, it’s important to consider the nature of your adventure and how long you’ll be away. Are you going on a relaxing vacation or an adrenaline-fueled journey? The type of trip you’re taking will influence the number of outfits you’ll need, so it’s important to plan accordingly. Additionally, the duration of your travels is another crucial factor to consider. A weekend getaway will require fewer clothes than a month-long expedition. So, take some time to think about the purpose and length of your trip to ensure you’re fully prepared for whatever adventure lies ahead!

Activities and Adventures Planned

When planning for different activities and adventures, it’s important to keep in mind the appropriate clothing to wear. For instance, if you’re planning on going hiking, you’ll want to make sure you have sturdy footwear and clothes made from moisture-wicking fabrics. On the other hand, if you’re headed to the beach, it’s all about swimwear and cover-ups. By choosing the right clothing for your activities, you can ensure that you’ll be comfortable and  prepared for whatever adventure comes your way.

Packing Light and Versatile

Being a passionate traveler, I’ve mastered the trick of packing light. The key is to pick versatile items that can be blended and paired together to produce several outfits. This approach reduces the requirement for bulky luggage, freeing up more space for souvenirs and other essentials.

As a result, I can easily hop from one destination to another without worrying about the weight of my luggage. It’s a liberating feeling to know that I have everything I need without being weighed down by too much stuff.

In summary, packing light and versatile is the way to go for any traveler who wants to maximize their experience without any unnecessary burden.

Essential Travel Outfits for Adventure Trips

When planning for a trip to choosing the right clothing for your travels, comfort is key. Opt for fabrics like cotton and linen that feel soft and cozy against your skin, especially for those long journeys. But, it’s not just about comfort – you also need clothes that can handle unexpected weather conditions. That’s why quick-drying and moisture-wicking fabrics are a must-have for any traveler.

Layering is another essential aspect of dressing for travel. With changing temperatures and weather conditions, you need to be able to adjust your clothing accordingly. Layering allows you to add or remove layers as needed, ensuring you’re always prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws your way.

Of course, proper footwear is also crucial for any traveler. You’ll want to invest in shoes that are sturdy and supportive, and that can handle the terrain you’ll be exploring. Whether you’re hiking rocky trails, walking along sandy beaches, or strolling through city streets, the right footwear can make all the difference.

And, don’t forget about accessories. Hats, scarves, and sunglasses not only add style to your outfits, but they also provide essential sun protection. So, make sure to pack the functional accessories you need to stay comfortable and safe on your travels.

Travel Outfit Suggestions for Specific Adventures

Every adventure requires a specific outfit to ensure you’re comfortable and prepared for whatever comes your way. To help you plan your wardrobe, we’ve put together some outfit ideas for popular adventure types.

If you’re planning a hiking or trekking trip, you’ll want to focus on clothing that’s moisture-wicking, comfortable, and waterproof. Look for base layers that will keep you dry, comfortable hiking pants, and outerwear that will protect you from unpredictable weather conditions.

For beach and water activities, think vibrant swimwear, cover-ups, and rash guards. Quick-drying board shorts and breezy sundresses are also great choices to keep you cool and comfortable.

If your adventure involves a safari or wildlife tour, you’ll want to pack neutral-colored, lightweight clothing with long sleeves and pants to protect you from the sun and insects.

For urban explorations, you’ll want to balance fashion with function by packing versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down. Consider comfortable walking shoes that will keep you on your feet all day.

Finally, for winter adventures, focus on staying warm with insulated outerwear, thermal base layers, and accessories like gloves, beanies, and scarves. With the right outfit, you’ll be ready to tackle any adventure that comes your way!

Creating a Capsule Travel Wardrobe

can be worn in multiple ways

For those who are always on the go, having a capsule travel wardrobe is a game-changer. This type of wardrobe consists of carefully selected items that can be mixed and matched to create various outfits, making packing and dressing for your adventures a breeze.

To create your own capsule travel wardrobe, start by choosing neutral colors for tops and bottoms that can easily be paired with each other. This way, you can mix and match your pieces without worrying about clashing colors. It’s also important to stick to a color palette that complements your personal style and ensures that every piece works well together.

When selecting your clothing items, opt for pieces that can be worn in multiple ways. This versatility allows you to create different looks with fewer items, maximizing your outfit options while minimizing the number of pieces you need to pack.

Having a capsule travel wardrobe not only saves space in your luggage but also simplifies outfit decisions during your journey. So, whether you’re jetting off on a weekend getaway or embarking on a long-term adventure, a capsule travel wardrobe is the perfect solution for effortless style on the go.

Packing and Organizing Travel Outfits

When embarking on a journey, packing and organizing your outfits can be a challenging task. However, with a few tricks up your sleeve, you can make it a breeze! Here are some tips that will help you pack efficiently and keep your outfits organized throughout your adventure.

Firstly, make use of packing cubes or compression bags to organize your clothing. These handy storage solutions will not only maximize space in your luggage but also keep your items neat and compact, making it easier for you to locate them when you need them.

To keep your clothes looking fresh and wrinkle-free, try rolling them instead of folding them. This technique minimizes wrinkles and saves space in your luggage. Alternatively, consider investing in wrinkle-resistant fabrics for your travel outfits. This way, you can avoid any unwanted creases and look your best at all times.

Another useful tip is to use separate packing bags for clean and dirty clothes. This will help you stay organized throughout your trip and ensure that your laundry doesn’t mix with your clean clothes.

By following these tips, you can efficiently pack and organize your travel outfits, leaving you more time to enjoy your adventure. So go ahead and start packing like a pro!

Tips for Staying Comfortable and Stylish During Long Journeys

Long journeys can be quite exhausting, but that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style and comfort. With the right travel outfits, you can have the best of both worlds! To ensure that you stay comfortable and fashionable throughout your journey, here are some tips to keep in mind.

Firstly, choose travel-friendly fabrics that are stretchy and breathable. These fabrics will allow you to move around freely without feeling restricted in any way. Plus, they won’t make you feel hot and sweaty, which can be a real problem on long trips.

When it comes to overnight flights or buses, wear comfortable layers that you can easily adjust. The temperature on these modes of transportation can vary greatly, so having layers will ensure that you’re prepared for any situation.

Finally, don’t forget to pack some travel-sized wrinkle-releasing spray or facial wipes. These will come in handy during layovers when you want to freshen up your look. With these simple tips, you can stay comfortable and stylish throughout your journey.

Adapting Travel Outfits for Cultural Sensitivity

When we travel to different countries, we have a unique opportunity to immerse ourselves in diverse cultures. However, it is crucial to dress respectfully and adhere to local dress codes to show respect for local customs. Therefore, it is essential to research the cultural norms and traditions of our travel destination and dress accordingly.

By researching local dress codes and customs, we can avoid unintentional disrespect. Some regions may consider certain clothing items inappropriate, so it is crucial to be aware of these customs. Adapting our travel outfits to cultural sensitivity is a small but significant way to show respect for the local community and enhance our overall travel experience.

Budget-Friendly Travel Outfit Options

Who says that traveling on a budget means sacrificing style and comfort? You can still look good and feel great while exploring the world without breaking the bank. Here are some amazing tips that will help you build a budget-friendly travel outfit collection:

First off, don’t underestimate the power of thrift shopping and second-hand gear. You’ll be surprised at the hidden treasures you can find in thrift stores or online platforms, where you can snag quality clothing and gear at a fraction of the cost. So, why not give it a try?

Another great way to save on your travel outfits is to keep an eye out for sales and discounts from outdoor retailers and fashion brands. You can score some fantastic deals on high-quality travel wear that will last you through many adventures.

Lastly, investing in durable and timeless pieces may seem like a splurge initially, but it can actually save you money in the long run. These high-quality clothing items are designed to withstand wear and tear, and they never go out of style. So, spend a bit more on these pieces and enjoy their longevity and versatility for many journeys to come.

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Travel Outfit Choices

When searching for clothing, consider brands that prioritize sustainability and ethical practices in their production processes. It’s important to support companies that have a positive impact on the environment and prioritize fair labor practices. By choosing to purchase from these types of brands, you can make a difference in the world and support a better future for all.

Travel Outfit Maintenance and Care

Taking good care of your travel outfits is important to keep them looking great throughout your travels. Here are some tips to help you maintain and care for your outfits while on the go:

When it comes to washing and drying your clothes, you can use the sinks in your hotel room or find a local laundromat. After washing, hang your clothes in a well-ventilated area to dry.

If you happen to notice any minor tears or loose threads in your clothing, don’t worry! Simply pack a small sewing kit to address these issues while on the go.

To keep your outfits in top shape, make sure to fold them neatly and store them in your luggage. This way, they’ll be ready for your next adventure whenever you are.

Selecting the perfect travel outfits is more than just a matter of fashion. It can significantly impact the quality of your adventures. Therefore, it’s essential to consider various factors, such as weather, activities, and cultural sensitivities, when creating your travel wardrobe. By doing so, you can ensure that your outfits meet both practical and personal needs.

When packing for your trip, it’s crucial to keep your luggage light and focus on versatile clothing options. This way, you can mix and match pieces to create various outfits without overpacking. Additionally, investing in sustainable clothing choices is not only responsible but also ensures a seamless travel experience.

As someone who loves adventure and offers travel advice, I encourage you to embrace your unique style and preferences while exploring the world. Whether you’re hiking through rugged terrains or lounging on exotic beaches, the right travel outfits can empower you to make the most of each moment with confidence and style.

Statement Boots

Snakeskin boots seem like an unusual choice for the airport. However, some girls want to look fashionable wherever they go. Combine high boots with a long coat and an olive green dress. That is how you will be ready for the party, the moment you land.

Fanny Pack and Jeans

What does rebellious style look like? Enter artist Saturn Risin9

A bag becomes a different thing entirely when worn by different personalities — similar to how no one perfume smells the same on two different people. To test out this idea, we invited four different artists to style the same bag into their personal look and lifestyle for one day, dreaming up places across L.A. where they would wear it. The bag? The Acne Studios rivet wine box bag from the brand’s spring/summer ’24 collection. It felt like a bag tough enough to withstand a long day in L.A. and lightweight enough to not drag you down.

In the second installment of the series , Saturn Risin9 , a singer, performer and DJ, takes the bag to Pirate Studios, where she practices DJ sets ahead of the weekend. With the Acne bag in tow, the multi-hyphenate shows us how their personal style is a reflection of “ambition, being daring, being exciting, and how to bring those things together.”

“I try to design as if I’m in the future, not as if I’m trying to imagine what the future is about.”

April 10, 2024

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m a multihyphenate. I’m a performer, a singer, a DJ, I throw events. I have a charity, Rings Alliance, for trans and queer artists. We’re still getting our footing but you’ll be hearing more about that soon.

Describe your personal style.

I’ve always been really rebellious. And my mom says she knew the moment that she was pregnant with me that I was going to only do what I wanted. I think my style reflects that. Even the things that you would think I would care about — like what’s trending, what the standard of fashion or music is — I never really care. If it hits me, I wear it. And if it sounds good to me, I do it, because I can make anything work. I mean that in life as well as in my music and also in my style. I think my self, my work and personal style all reflect someone that works really hard for themselves and by themselves. It’s a reflection of ambition, being daring, being exciting, and how to bring those things together because it is really remarkable to do that in a world that does not champion and welcome that. (I’m blessed to have found a community and a personal world that does.) My style reflects that person, and my effort toward being great and having fun.

Talk to me about dreaming up an outfit around this Acne Studios bag.

For the last few years I’ve really been into these really small bags that don’t have a lot of space — I love a clutch size. So when I saw the bag I was excited because it was more spacious and had this rectangular shape so I knew that I could fit a lot of things in it, which meant that I had more options to wear things that allowed for a sleek [look]. I don’t have to wear pockets because my purse can hold it all, so I have these thigh-high boots on. I definitely thought about how flexible [the bag] would be for going out or even traveling because I don’t like to travel with a lot. I like to have as much as I can fit in my purse and still be sexy, cute and ready to go.

How does sense of place inform sense of style? How do you travel through L.A. with style in mind?

I’m usually in what I like to call butch-wares. I definitely like to be comfy when I travel through L.A., especially in the daytime — I’m not trying to put on a look. I also don’t want to be bogged down by the idea that dolls [trans women] need to present super feminine or hyper-femme to be able to pass through life. Passability is not even a concern for me. I just try to be as comfortable as possible because I’m doing so much at all times — why would I want to be uncomfortable on top of working as hard as I work? But, there’s nothing more c— than having a fab bag on you. Sweats or not, a fab bag is a fab bag. Like, actually, let me dress more bummy and pull out the Acne bag.

stylish tourist outfits

If this week’s sunnier days are a sneak peak of what’s to come, it might be time to put our winter clothing back in storage. Luckily, I found plenty of on-sale spring-y clothing items and accessories, including some colorful Tevas, a gauzy top from J.Crew, and a few lightweight closet staples from Cos’s Friends and Family sale. For beauty lovers on a budget, I’ve also included some of our readers’ favorite products (such as the very best cream blush) from Sephora’s Savings Event , which is live until the end of the weekend. Then there are some outdoor essentials, such as a sip-anywhere personal water filter and a lively green towel. And as always, make sure to sign up for our  email newsletter  for even more sales coverage.

Studs Mini Chunky Huggie

Studs is having a sitewide sale with 20 percent off all their earrings, cuffs, and chains. This cute chunky huggie is available in gold and silver (I’m eyeing the former), single or as a pair, and is safe for sensitive ears.

Studs Baguette Stud - Silver/Clear

This cute baguette stud comes in classic silver or gold options, or you could welcome spring with the delightful emerald-and-gold stud .

LifeStraw Personal Water Filter

I’ve included this personal water filter for avid hikers and the folks (myself included) who realized their emergency preparedness was lackluster after New York’s recent earthquake. To use, simply stick the straw in water and sip.

Ezpz Mini Cup + Straw Training System

For transitioning babies off the bottle, consider this straw-training cup, which is the perfect size for tiny hands and almost half off with our special code. You can use it with the lid and straw or with an open top, and the straw has sensory bumps that will help your kid know where to keep their lips while sipping.

Carhartt Men's Relaxed Fit Heavyweight Short-Sleeve Pocket T-Shirt

From the maker of our favorite black tees with pockets comes this classic black tee .

Cos The Clean Cut T-Shirt - Striped

Strategist contributor Mya Gelber recently told us that the white version of this tee is “one of the few white T-shirts you could get away with wearing in a corporate setting.” But there’s also this fun spring-y green striped option that is discounted as part of Cos’s sitewide Friends and Family sale (25 percent off everything, automatically applied at checkout).

Cos Oversized Grandad-Collar Shirt Dress

This crisp, breezy shirt dress will keep you cool and looking put-together no matter how warm it gets outside. On cooler days, it will go nicely layered with a sweater .

Dyson V8 Cordless Vacuum

We named Dyson’s V8 stick vac the best lightweight cordless vacuum , and this version has a 40-minute run time, weighs less than six pounds, and comes with some handy attachments (a combination tool, crevice tool, and hair-screw tool).

Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm

Sephora’s Savings Event is still going strong but will end in just a few days. One of the items Strategist readers have been stocking up on is Summer Fridays’ Lip Butter Balm. It’s still in stock in a few colors, including this delicious deep-brown shade that smells like brown sugar.

Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder Flushed

After testing 20 popular cream blushes , Strategist beauty columnist Rio Viera-Newton named this the best one. It’s richly pigmented and delivers a lightweight powdery finish.

Crown Affair The Dry Shampoo

Finally, there’s the dry shampoo that Strategist writer Arielle Avila told us is her new favorite. It allows her to go days after a wash without an oily or irritated scalp. Plus it smells fresh and expensive, she writes.

J.Crew Short-Sleeve Textured Cotton Camp-Collar Shirt

Among the variety of items on sale at J.Crew is this camp-collar shirt, which comes in a subtly puckered cotton grid weave and six colors.

J.Crew Seaboard Soft-Knit Shirt

For cooler temps, this rugged and soft collared shirt feels like a cozy sweater but looks like a structured shirt. Customer reviews say it runs slightly large, which makes it ideal for layering.

J.Crew Garçon Classic Double-Gauze Shirt

This white button-up has classic tailoring but comes in a soft, lightweight double-gauze that goes with just about everything and doesn’t require ironing.

Tekla Linen Napkin

Whether you’re looking to refresh your table linens or planning some dinner parties, these linen napkins will complement your place settings nicely. Along with this pale-orange option that Tekla is calling “Apple Core” I love the pastel-green and cobalt-blue options.

Slowtide Opt Out Premium Woven Towel

For tanning and swimming, there’s this eye-catching towel in a trippy print that is more than a third off.

Teva Original Universal Tie-Dye Sandals - Women's

If you’re in need of some new sandals, check out these discounted tie-dye sandals from REI. They’re one of the many comfortable shoes that celebrities have told us they can’t live without.

Lululemon Pace Breaker Linerless Short 7

Last but not least, there’s this welcoming woven doormat from West Elm. It’s mold-resistant and can be vacuumed or hosed off if your shoes have tracked in anything from April showers.

The stealthy revolution in saudi arabia will change the world.

We all forget that, in the latter part of the Cold War, a US-led campaign encouraged the Saudis and Gulf states to spend money building Islamic-schools aka Madrassahs around the Muslim world. The aim? To counteract Moscow's widespread soft-power influence in youth-movements and colleges of the anti-colonialist/imperialist anti-western variety. The Saudi/US campaign succeeded all too well in countries like Turkey and Pakistan, and elsewhere, ultimately shifting the balance of power against the Soviets in Afghanistan by funding and training the Mujahideen resistance. But, for reasons still obscure, Washington didn't lean on the Saudis to halt the Wahhabist momentum once the Soviet union collapsed. Radical Islam had gained purchase as the dominant kinetic Muslim ideology. From it came Al Qaeda, ISIS, the Taliban and numerous splinter terror groups. Iran got in on the act, despite being Shiite and anathema to the orthodox Sunni establishment, simply by usurping the political ends of the movement.

Which is where we are today - except for one fundamental difference. The Gulf has changed and Saudi Arabia is following suit. At a certain point, while the Saudis could still depend on oil, the smaller Gulf states decided their future lay in developing their economy as a travel hub and conference center. Real estate boomed in tandem to accomodate the transformation - not just to create hotels but as investment draws for all the grey money sloshing around the Mideast. In essence, the Gulfies got out of the global politics game. They had to. No tourist attraction survives with a fire-breathing puritan religious image. But to move from Islamism to conference centers to full-blown tourism - a lot of internal re-invention was needed.

For a start, the local population needed to embrace a thorough social realignment. Their womenfolk started working, meeting foreigners, meeting men outside the family and the like. Moreover, cultural life and night life had to change. This was not, in the past, a geographical area abounding with culture - or entertainment. At first, the conference center economy drew vast numbers of foreign men in need of entertainment after work hours at conferences. There was little to do. Ubiquitous hotel discos with loitering 'Russian' escorts became the norm - not a good longterm option. Women conferencers felt uncomfortable. Wives around the world discouraged their men from attending. The area got a bad reputation for being a Mideastern equivalent of Las Vegas.

It was time to move on to the next stage - shopping, culture, full blown tourism including female tourists and families. And so, international museums were encouraged to create extensions there. New museums devoted to Islamic Art went on global purchasing sprees. Top designer brands opened branches. The beach economy expanded, videos of hang-gliders floating above skyscrapers proliferated - a sort of artificial glamorous lifestyle was implanted and took hold after a fashion. The Saudis watched on the sidelines. But they had internal obstacles, namely the custodianship of Mecca, religious imperatives, a powerful phalanx of Wahhabi clerics symbiotic with the indigenous culture of the Saudi tribes since the 1700s. The isolated desert settings, the identity shaped by the elements - the flinty, puritan, patriarchal ethos seemed bred-in-the-bone. How could it ever change? The Saudis had their own authentic cultural identity and it was retarding progress beyond oil wealth. Lots of money without social evolution.

Enter Prince Mohammed Bin Salman , the de facto Saudi ruler with iron control for some ten years now. (Hereafter known as MBS). These days if you meet anyone, especially anyone female, from Saudi or doing business there, you'll find them surly and rebellious that the world identifies MBS with the endless war in Yemen, the assassination of journalist Jamal Kashoggi in Turkey, the detaining en masse of his local rivals and the like. Instead, or simultaneously, MBS arguably deserves a reputation for having launched the rebirth of Saudi Arabia on a new future freed of its historical shackles and ossified social hindrances. Essentially, what MBS has done is to initiate a socio-cultural revolution while freezing all political liberalization. Hence for example women can now drive cars solo but women's rights political activists are liable to get jailed. Meanwhile, the state is funding young Saudi women to study classical music in the UK, developing a vibrant fashion industry while conducting its own fashion week and opening up its vast desert hinterlands to international tourism with emphasis on regional attractions and identities. And, of course, the star-studded soccer league headed up by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Most observers in the west simply cannot fathom the multiplex contradictions in the scenario. In fact, taken as a whole, it fits precisely into Islamic tradition going back to the Middle Ages. The most authoritarian rulers often presided over the richest cultural courts. Take the Moghuls of India with epic poetry recited at court, with miniature painting and architecture flourishing to great heights. In the case of MBS, his iron control has kept the clerics and reactionary forces at bay while intimidating top rival businessmen in the elite from funding any subversion at home or rogue Islamist movements abroad. Why has MBS taken this peculiar path? The US is losing interest in protecting fossil fuel allies, especially in the Middle East. The world is turning to clean energy. Other oil powers such as Russia and Iran daily threaten the kingdom's strategic prominence. Oil qua oil is no longer a dependable solo bet.

Is Leadership an Art or a Science

And Saudi's population is exploding. The economy desperately needs diversifying. Hence the Prince's decision to shift the wealth of Aramco to a national sovereign fund. MBS has seen the economic pluralism chosen by Gulf neighbors and decided to emulate them in what he thinks is the safest way - with complete internal control. Which is also why he chose detente with Iran and Russia, and a potential strategic deal with China if the US backs away. These are not the kind of regimes that demand political freedoms from their allies. The old alignments and heirarchies are all in play both in domestic and foreign policy, not to mention religious policy. For the society that controls Islam’s holiest sites to set an example of radical social change, well, let’s say it will affect the wider Muslim world, even the world as a whole.

  • The Best Golf Clubs in…

In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world.   ■
