Cool Cruiser

We're on a cruise ending in Sydney, due to arrive 6 am on a week day.  Will we be fine with a 2:30 pm flight?  I have no idea how far the port is from the airport.  We'll have to book a hotel and fly out the next day if this timing won't work.  Thanks in advance for your help!

We booked EZair with Princess and they put us on a 12:15pm flight. Not sure if we'll use their shuttle or go to the airport on our own.

Not sure if this is helpful..as it is information about taxi prices FROM Sydney airport TO the Holiday Inn, on the Rocks.

(Just opposite Overseas Passenger Terminal.)

Having researched taxi prices, we expected to pay approximately 50-60 Australian Dollars.

In actual fact we were charged 120 Aus Dollars as we travelled during the morning rush hour. The journey took almost an hour and was in a taxi using a meter.

Which dock? There are two.

Good question.  I don't know.  Are they so far apart that timing would be so different?  We're not traveling until December.  Usually sail Princess but this trip is on the Norwegian Jewel so not even sure where to find the info.  Still working on that! 😀

Norwegian Jewel will be at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at the Rocks, about 45 min to the airport by car, shuttle or train.

Thanks

This is PLENTY of time. From the overseas passenger terminal you can easily walk to Circular Quay train station in less than 10 minutes. Just follow the waterfront towards the ferries.

Bear in mind that from around 7 am to 09.30 the trains will be very, very full (or taxis will be stuck in rush-hour).

Personally, I would do a slow check-out, grab a coffee or breakfast at "City Extra" restaurant at Circular Quay station and take the train to the airport (International Airport station) around 09.30/10.00.

This gets you to the airport in around 30 minutes.

Perfect!  Thank you!

I agree with buchhalm, we usually take the train from Circular Quay to the airport. A 2.30pm flight gives you plenty of time to get to the airport. It means you don't have to rush, you can relax and enjoy your last day in Sydney.

Enjoy your cruise down under.

Jumping on this thread to inquire whether those who have done this morning train to the airport would know if making a 11:15 or 12:30 international flight would be possible from OST. I am thinking the 11:15 flight may be a no go but would like input from those who might have experience. Thanks!

For an international flight you should be at the airport no less than 2.5 hrs before departure. That would mean 8.45 or so in your case . If you can get off the ship by 7/7.30 you should be able to make it.

A bit risky during the week, because of commuters on the trains or on the road.

Less worrisome on Saturday or Sunday

Note that there are NO  luggage racks on Sydney trains. You need to keep everyhing with you!

Also,  check in on line the day before, if you can!

Actually, the check in process is usually pretty easy. The hold ups happen at security checks. Passport control is quite fast again.

Personally I think you would be cutting it too fine with no wriggle room for contingencies.

Our EZair flight is at 12:15. That's why I'm thinking we should take the Princess shuttle to the airport. Sounds like you'd agree?

It will be a Wed, Feb 12, with both the commuters and immigration to contend with.

The_Big_M

12:15 is definitely doable.

Don't know who EZair is though...

EZair is the air program that Princess has if you book your flights through them. They booked us with Air Canada. You pay extra for the ship's transfer to the airport but, if something happens and their bus doesn't get you to the airport in time and you miss your flight, Princess will sort you out with another flight at no additional expense to you.

Ah, thanks. Was thinking airlines and completely forgot about Princess' own program!

Would anyone have information on weather or not there is a car service an what their experience was with them?    We would be traveling from the airport to a hotel hopefully near the cruise port.    One of us had some mobility issues so taking a train is not an option.   Thanks

There are car services, but best to book before you leave home.

and check which port you are sailing from if you want an hotel close

Guess it's a bit early for the cruise line to give us a definite answer on the port as this is what is listed now.

sydney cruise port to airport

I am just guessing, if it is Domestic , you need to checked in about 1 hour before .

If it is International , the Airlines I fly with request that I am checked in 1h+30 Mins before.

So take it as International your window is now 4 hours. The ship might dock at 6.30 Am, The question I would ask "how long did it take from docking time to being in Taxi and on the way to the Airport".

Some people who have answered his question before might suggest getting the train to the Airport !

sydney cruise port to airport

If you don't want to catch an Uber or taxi, just jump on a train from Circular Quay station (5 minutes walk from Overseas Passenger Terminal). A direct 20 minute train ride will take you to either Domestic or International (airport) train stations.

---------------------------

AM stands for ANTI MERIDIAN or before the MERIDIAN. PM stands for POST MERIDIAN or after the MERIDIAN. 12 NOON is the MERIDIAN. Since a thing can't be before itself or after itself, there can be no such thing as 12am or 12pm.

https://www.portauthoritynsw.com.au/cruise/cruise-schedule/

Presuming your cruise arrives at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay , the quickest way to the airport will be the train.

It is 400 yards from the exit at the overseas passenger terminal to the entrance to the circular quay railway station.

A train comes along about every 10 minutes. The train from Circular Quay railway station to the International Airport takes 20 minutes.

The cost for a single trip opal ticket will be about $20, which includes the airport gate access fee.

If you find you have time, take the time to take some pictures while on the platform waiting for the train. The first minute of this video shows the views you can expect.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYyskzUkBeo

There is a possibility that the trains will not be running because of track work. If this happens, they are likely to make an announcement on board your cruise ship. They did that when we were docking in February and we had to catch a taxi instead.

You just cannot get off the ship whenever you want to. Depending on your deck you are given a time to disembark. Otherwise there would be thousands of people cramming the exits. If you have limited time to get to the airport you need to get this sorted at reception desk while on board. No-one gets off at 6.30. They have to secure the ship and get clearances etc. Earliest time would be 7 or 7,30am to get off.

Breaking news, airplane passenger fined for urinating in a cup during deplaning delay.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

SYDNEY — A passenger has been fined for urinating in a cup during a delay in deplaning after landing at Sydney Airport.

The incident, after a 3-hour Air New Zealand flight from Auckland, occurred last December and a Sydney court fined the 53-year-old man $395 for offensive behavior in February, officials said Friday.

The incident only came to public attention on Friday, when New Zealand news website Stuff reported that a passenger in the same row, identified only as Holly, said she had reported the behavior to the air crew.

An Air New Zealand passenger was fined for urinating in a cup during a deplaning delay at the Sydney, Australia airport in December.

She said she and her 15-year-old daughter were sitting in the aisle and middle seats when the man in the window seat, whose name has not been released, was urinating in a cup.

Holly said the plane had been on the tarmac for about 20 minutes, waiting for a terminal gate to be allocated, when she heard the unmistakable sound of the passenger urinating in a cup, Stuff reported.

She said the man was “obviously quite drunk” and spilled urine on a flight attendant as he left the plane, it reported.

But the mishap with the attendant wasn’t his crime. Australian Federal Police said in a statement that officers removed him from the plane because he had “urinated into a cup while in his seat.”

Air New Zealand said it does not comment on individual incidents. It said it bans between five and 10 customers each month for disruptive behavior, including intoxication.

Why cruise line Norwegian Dawn did the right thing by ditching passengers

Eight people have accused Norwegian Cruise Line of abandoning them. Now, one cruiser said the ship’s captain did the right thing.

‘Two seconds’: Girl attacked by dingo

Eight people have accused Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) of abandoning them on a tiny island in Africa after a private tour ran late and the group missed the embarkation cut-off time.

Four of the group are elderly and another is pregnant , and though the ship was still at anchor, they were denied boarding.

The ship, the Norwegian Dawn, set sail without them – and it was right to do so.

US couple Jay and Jill Campbell as well as Australians in Norwegian Cruise Lines nightmare trip

Once, I was late to check in for a flight. I jumped out of the taxi, sprinted to the counter (which is no mean feat when you’re hauling luggage) and arrived at the desk sweating bullets, prepared to get on my knees and grovel if it meant I’d be allowed through. I began to tell my sob story to the lady at the desk, heart hammering and lungs gasping for air, when she politely interrupted and shook her head.

In the nicest way possible, she said this: “Stiff bickies.” (OK yes, I’ve paraphrased.)

Sure, the plane was still at the airport, no more than a few hundred metres from where I was standing. However, the luggage had already been loaded, the manifest had already been finalised, and the other passengers were already boarding. There was no way they were going to let me board, nor should they have.

Some agree that the ship did the right thing by not letting passengers on board.

You see, I had been on a whale-watching tour about two-and-a-half hours south of the airport – hey, it was my last day, I wanted to make it count. I planned it to perfection, except for one detail: we spotted a playful pod right at the very end, so the captain offered to give us some bonus time to enjoy the view.

With one eye on the magnificent mammals, and another on my watch, I held on to a flicker of hope that I might make it. I jumped on the bus back to town, flagged down a cab, and asked the driver to hurry. I launched out of the car like a 100m sprinter launches out of starting blocks and ran into the terminal.

Alas, my proverbial ship had sailed.

Was it a bummer? Absolutely. But imagine delaying the other 158-or-so passengers scheduled to depart on the Boeing 737, asking the crew to extend their shifts, or holding the plane and disrupting airport traffic … all so little old me could drop off my bags, scurry through security, and find my gate.

Imagine the awkwardness if I stepped onto that plane. What do you say? “Sorry guys, my bad, lol.”

There’s a good reason why the Norwegian Dawn left when it did. Picture: Michel Verdure

That doesn’t even scratch the surface of a cruise ship’s operations. Norwegian Dawn can accommodate 3372 people – 2340 passengers and 1032 crew – and this group of eight expected it to wait?

A ship’s departure time isn’t exactly a mystery.

I sailed on Norwegian Dawn in February and the departure time was published in NCL’s Freestyle Daily newsletter the night before and announced over the loudspeaker multiple times in the morning. It was also posted on signs at the doors where guests disembark.

The golden rule is clear: Make sure you’re back on time, or the ship may sail without you.

So what do you do if you’re left behind? Generally there are two options: either catch up with the ship at a later port or head home. If you’re lucky, you’ll have brought your essentials with you – your passport, phone, credit card, and medication – because all of your belongings will stay on board until the end.

Please don’t get me wrong, of course I’m sympathetic to the distress of those who were left in a foreign country without the safety of the ship. It would be scary and stressful to figure out next steps, especially for the members of the group with higher needs, and disappointing to miss out on their holidays.

However, the unfortunate reality is that ships can’t always wait.

The group allegedly took a private tour, that was not offered by the cruise line.

Private tours are a whole separate issue, because while the ship will wait for official tours – those which have been organised by the cruise ship operator – to return, all bets are off for passengers taking their shore excursions into their own hands. Unofficial tours can be slightly cheaper than those on the ship’s itinerary, with slightly more availability, so they can be attractive. However, while operators will do their best to stick to scheduled times, all bets are off once you board that bus and leave the port.

Think of it like booking multiple legs of a trip with different airlines. They’re not in the same network, they don’t owe each other anything, and they can’t guarantee that you’ll make your connection. Say the bus breaks down. Maybe someone wanders off and takes ages to find. Perhaps the group lingers over a delicious lunch. Someone might need to stop at an ATM or a loo. You could get stuck in traffic. Or maybe your tour will be like mine and you’ll see something incredible that simply makes you want to pause.

The blame game has begun around the passengers left behind by the Norwegian Dawn cruise ship.

And so, eight passengers were left in São Tomé and Príncipe, Africa’s second-smallest country.

“While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time,” NCL said in a statement, adding that it is communicating with the guests about their next steps. It’s harsh but fair, especially since the other 3364 (or so) people on board got it right.

Kirrily Schwarz recently sailed on Norwegian Dawn as a guest of Norwegian Cruise Line.

An American social media star promises he is a Milo pro now after being absolutely roasted by Aussies for making this hilarious mistake.

A major airline has slashed airfares to a holiday destination that more than a million Australian holiday makers flock to every year.

Visitors to a popular holiday spot are being warned to stay alert for dingoes after a young girl was attacked while her parents turned away for “two seconds”.

A dream vacation nearly turned into a logistical nightmare this week when eight passengers on a Norwegian cruise line were stranded on São Tomé and Príncipe after they were delayed returning from a tour of the island.

Despite being flummoxed and uneasy at being left behind, however, the eight tourists did quite well in their short stint being grounded on São Tomé. “The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable,” Jay Campbell of South Carolina told NBC’s “TODAY” show on April 2. With help, the marooned tourists all found hotels and transit to the next port of call.

A spokesperson for the cruise company referred to the incident as a “very unfortunate situation” and said, “Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

Now, a paradisiacal island in the equatorial Atlantic doesn’t seem like the worst place to get stuck for a few days, though language barriers, a scuttled itinerary, and the need to acquire new visas may add some stress to your soothing vacay.

A few days later, on March 30, a section of California’s Highway 1 collapsed into the ocean amid heavy rains, and around 2,000 tourists were stranded in the Big Sur area. The idyllic beach community is home to stunning views and quaint cafes, another decent spot to be beached for a while.

At Outside , we’ve long been fascinated by the idea of being cast away, so much so that we sent author Thayer Walker to the desert island of Pargo in Panama’s Gulf of Chiriquí for 20 days with little more than a dive mask, a knife, and the shirt on his back to see what the Robinson Crusoe life was all about. It turned out to be a lot more difficult than Walker ever could have imagined.

So what is a good place to be marooned? What are the constituent elements that turn Survivor into the Swiss Family Robinson? Below we rank the best and worst places to be left high and dry.

That’s because ski patrol and Utah Department of Transportation Employees are firing World War II-era Howitzers over the road for avalanche mitigation.

For skiers and snowboarders visiting the resorts, the anticipation that builds during an interlodge is like no other powder panic. Pillows of snow are building outside the windows at a rate of inches-per-hour. Hundreds of skiers line up by the exit with boots on, waiting for the all-clear. And if you’re extraordinarily lucky, the mountain will open before the highway does, allowing only the lucky few up-canyon to reap the deep rewards. My first Interlodge was one of these extremely rare “country club” days. I choked on powder and skied past an empty lift line straight onto the chair.

The Aspen Ritz-Carlton

In 2019 I was in Aspen wrapping up a work trip for Powder magazine when a storm blew in and iced up the aircraft at the small Pitkin County Airport. After our gaggle of editors and skiers waited around all day, the airport changed its delays to cancellations, and we had to pivot fast. Our group finagled a last-minute hostel room, which was fortunate in a town that could have been booked up, and then someone brought up having heard of an easy-to-poach hot tub at the Ritz in Highlands a few miles away. Naturally, I decided to make the most of my strandedness and, taking an easy shuttle, slipped into the side door of the fancy hotel. For the price of a reshuffled itinerary, I spent a heavenly hour or two soaking under a snowy sky.

The Blue Lagoon in 2010

Among the many tourists trapped in Iceland after the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption grounded all flights was singer Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls. Exhausting her options searching for flights to her touring destination in London, Palmer sought advice on Twitter while still stuck in Reykjavik.

The online chorus sent her to the Blue Lagoon, Iceland’s premier spa, where she could soak her bones in volcanic hot springs while waiting for the ashes to clear. She later posted, with an image: “does it show that perhaps i was starting to get happier and happier my flight had been canceled?”

The Worst: Alta During an Interlodge, as a Hotel Employee

While Interlodge represents the zenith of skier anticipation, for an employee at a hotel in the town of 300 people, it can be its own kind of hell. Managing guests cooped up for 52 hours at a time is like herding rabid mongeese. I waited tables at the Alta Lodge during the big winter of 2019-2020 and nearly had my head bitten off by impatient skiers. Champing at the bit is something snowsports enthusiasts know well, but it’s better if you’re not the bit.

The Beautiful Island of Mauritius… During a Possible Cholera Outbreak

Just the word Mauritius conjures up images of turquoise waters, thatched-roof cabanas, and frosty blended drinks with little cocktail umbrellas. This was not the case for passengers on the Norwegian Dream cruise line in February 2024 , when a few cases of mild stomach symptoms left the crew without permission to land and scrambling for cholera tests, which eventually came back negative. The ship of more than 2,000 passengers sat in limbo for two days outside the port of Mauritius until the passengers’ tests came up clean.

High in the Andes

This one is a real disaster and was the worst horror that maroonees can endure. The harrowing story just got a small-screen reboot, with a new film on the 1972 Uraguay Air Force Flight 571 disaster: the excellent and important Society of the Snow .

Many Outside readers are probably familiar with the tale of the rugby team who, after a plane crash in the Andes and a subsequent avalanche, had to resort to cannibalism.  The survivors lasted 10 weeks before two of them, undertaking real mountaineering and equipped with an improvised sleeping bag, reached help and effected a rescue.

Under a Boulder in the Utah Desert

We now arrive at the last on the list, between a rock and a hard place. Dramatized in the film 127 Hours, Aron Ralston’s grisly survival tale of being pinned by a boulder just outside Canyonlands National Park describes the unqualified last place we would want to be stranded.
