Kim Deal on the iconic Last Splash artwork:

You worked with the late Vaughan Oliver on the Last Splash album artwork. Can you tell us a bit about the artwork, it's inception and the creative process?

Vaughan Oliver. What a weirdo. In the best way. He approached album artwork entirely differently than anybody else at the time. The idea of a heart image originated from a conversation I had with Vaughn. I was complaining to him (this is how I remember it): “Vaughan, please stop putting naughty bits on the breeders record covers!” You might not know, but the Safari text on the album cover is a close-up of an areola from one of the women who worked at 4AD (thank you for your service, Sabrina!) And generally, you know, the whole beautiful fertility dance on the cover of Pod. I said, “Vaughan, how about something sweet for a change?” I actually made a Valentine’s Day box in my mom’s and dad’s garage. I over-decorated the box with tissue paper and hearts, so it looked cloying and repulsive. I can’t even remember if I sent him the photos I took of the box. I thought what he made was just stunning. - Kim

The Breeders mark 30th anniversary of “Last Splash” with new reissue, tour — hear an unreleased song

The Breeders will mark the 30th anniversary of their breakthrough second album Last Splash with a new reissue featuring unreleased music — and by playing the record in full on a tour that will include some dates opened by Belly, the band founded by ex-Breeder Tanya Donnelly.

The 4AD label will release Last Splash (30th Anniversary Original Analog Edition) on Sept. 22 in digital formats, on CD and on both black and clear vinyl. The album is remastered for the first time from the newly-found original analog tapes, the label says, and the vinyl was cut at half-speed at Abbey Road for a 45 rpm, 2LP pressing.

The new reissue can be pre-ordered now via Amazon.com or from 4AD’s store .

The vinyl edition of the new reissue will include a bonus one-sided, etched 12-inch featuring two previously unreleased tracks: “Go Man Go,” a song Kim Deal cowrote with her former Pixies bandmate Black Francis, and “Divine Mascis,” an alternate recording of “Divine Hammer” with Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis on lead vocals. Both songs date back to the original recording sessions for the 1993 album, the label says, and “were left forgotten until the sessions were exhumed to create this new master.”

You can hear “Go Man Go” below via its new music video.

The CD edition is a single-disc affair featuring a Japanese vinyl replica sleeve with the original LP art that will include a “high definition master of the album” — and both of the previously unreleased tracks.

The Last Splash -era lineup of The Breeders — Kim Deal, Kelley Deal, Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson — reunited in 2012 in conjunction with the 20th anniversary reissue of that album. After considerable touring, the group went on to record the band’s fifth album, All Nerve , which was released in 2018.

Since then, the band has released a cover of His Name Is Alive’s “The Dirt Eaters,” part of a 4AD collection of cover songs called Bills & Aches & Blues (40 Years of 4AD) that released in 2021.

To mark the 30th anniversary of Last Splash , The Breeders will play a special run of concerts in September and October during which they’ll perform the album in its entirety. They’ll be joined at those shows by Belly, Screaming Females and Horsegirl, depending on the date. The band is also opening a number of Foo Fighters shows and playing festivals.

Below, check out those tour dates and the reissue’s tracklist.

What a great show!

We arrived and the First band “Melk Belly”

Who really rocked it was a pleasant surprise cause usually your just thinking can we just get to the band we want to see and we’re just awesome and a good pairing to line up with Thd Breeders!

So The Breeders take the stage and Kim and Kelly were in great moods and it just spred threw out the audience and just seem to make everyone feel a connection.

They actually new what city they were in and told some stories and just rocked it,Kim even noticed my 2005 Pixies tour t-shirt and comented on it and at the end of the show Kim hands me her set list!

I can’t think of it getting much better than that, except The National ofwhich anyone we ran into was very cool, but when the first band went on i noticed that the stage pa speakers weren’t on and I even went and told the sound guy, there apparently is a short in the power source for them as they kept cutting on and off throughout most of the show there for we couldn’t hear most of what they were saying because the main PA system is aimed out on the sides and we were right in the middle of front stage so what you could here was just the slap back from the main PA which was a bummer but beyond that what a GREAT Night!

The show had 110% studio quality sound. They really enjoyed being up there as they played. They were always smiling. They were very appreciative of their fan base cheering them on in the crowd! We met them after the show. They were super friendly and happily signed our swag!

‘I blamed everyone else but I was the problem’: The Breeders on fallouts, reunions and 30 years of Last Splash

Despite decades of drugs and estrangements, the playful pop-grungers are back with new clarity and purpose. They discuss how a mutual appreciation of their 1993 opus made them put aside their differences

I n any successful band, the proof that they’ve crossed from cultish acclaim to overground recognition hits each member differently. For the Breeders’ English bass player, Josephine Wiggs, it was when her sister and mother were visiting her in New York. The three were at the top of the Empire State Building and somebody tapped Wiggs on the shoulder to confirm her identity. It struck drummer Jim MacPherson suddenly at a sold-out show in Paris. “I was just totally blown away by being in a band that had catering following us around, because we actually had a crew now,” he recalls, a note of wonder in his voice three decades on. “I was so green compared to Kim and Kelley and Josephine – it was all so new to me. And when I saw the video for Cannonball on TV, that’s when I thought: ‘This is really special, this song is affecting people’.”

The infectiously gleeful Cannonball, released exactly 30 years before the day of our Zoom call, was the first single from the Breeders’ second album, Last Splash. The Dayton, Ohio band – fronted by singer, songwriter and guitarist Kim Deal (formerly Pixies’ bass player) and featuring her twin sister Kelley, also a guitarist – are in Nevada, on tour supporting Foo Fighters. September sees the second reissue of Last Splash and the start of a headlining US tour during which they’ll again play through the album in its entirety. It’s won the status of a modern classic marked by eccentricity: a disarming mix of art rock, grunge, guileless pop and punk noise, where opaque, often dark lyrics are cut with sardonic humour and both melodic and vocal sweetness. The sound of Kelley’s mic’d-up sewing machine features, while some of Kim’s vocals were recorded in the studio toilet. None of which sounds much like the makings of a UK Top 5 and US Top 40, platinum-certified hit.

“It encompasses everything,” agrees Kelley of the record. “It is legion. As we’ve been preparing to do the shows, one of the things I’ve discovered is that it sounds so effortless; [it’s as if] we went into a room and just jammed some stuff, then it was like, ‘There’s our record!’ It took a week and a half and we were so pleased with it. I love that that’s how it sounds. That’s not what happened: everything on there is highly curated, every ‘accidental’ thing …” she trails off. “It is, isn’t it? Do you not think it is?” she asks, catching her sister’s doubtful look.

“It’s the way you say it,” Kim replies, wary of any suggestion of a grand plan. “I’ve seen bands who have said: ‘We had a group meeting and decided we were going to make this album the sound of the global happiness that we wish the universe would live in.’ People have mock mantras and stuff, you know,” she scoffs. She reckons it’s partly the band’s resistance to using any sound that was then fashionable that has preserved Last Splash’s freshness. Although they’ve always been keen to experiment, the Breeders remain committed to analogue recording and all use the same vintage gear today as they did back then. MacPherson is still playing the drum kit his parents bought him in 1982, though he’s chewed through a few cymbals since, and Kim still works on her most promising lyrics using paper plates and an orange Sharpie.

In interview the Breeders are an entertainingly unguarded bunch, trading jokey slights and feigning outrage with an ease that comes only through years of closeness, though theirs is a chequered history. After a three-year high that included opening for Nirvana’s European tour and playing Lollapalooza, the band disintegrated around the time of Kelley’s arrest in 1994 for heroin possession and her subsequent spell in rehab. It was 24 years before the four made another record together, the triumphant All Nerve.

In the interim, Kim released an album as the Amps in 1995, with MacPherson and others, then revived the Breeders’ name in 1997 and put out two LPs with a different rhythm section and contributions from Kelley. Kim also spent some time in rehab and, in 2004, rejoined Pixies for their reunion tour before quitting for good in 2013. Along the way, she and MacPherson became estranged and ended up not speaking for 15 years, despite living in the same town, though neither can identify a specific trigger point. Her explanation is “individual psychological implosions”, but MacPherson now admits to “almost having a breakdown. I could blame everybody else but, really, I was the problem. I couldn’t handle things and that was a result of drugs and drinking.”

It’s been a bumpy ride, which raises the question as to what has drawn the “classic” Breeders lineup back together for two Last Splash anniversary tours, especially given that all members now have their own independent music projects. Kelley is half of the moody alt-pop duo R Ring and also plays with Protomartyr; Kim has her solo songwriting (an album under her own name is due next year) and seven-inch single series; MacPherson plays in an instrumental surf band called the Mulchmen; while Wiggs is tinkering with a backlog of music she recorded with UK drummer Jon Mattock. It was a combination of the band’s ineffable chemistry and the twins’ sobriety that convinced Wiggs to jump on board again in 2012. “I had played with Kim and Kelley in 2005, when we went to London to do the 25th anniversary of [record label] 4AD. They put on two nights of events and it was unexpectedly magical – first of all to be playing with Kim and Kelley being 100% present and second, just playing those songs. I thought that it would be a great opportunity.”

the Breeders’ Kelley and Kim on stage in Austin, Texas, 2018.

MacPherson agrees: “We had such a great formula together and I missed it so much. I deeply love that album and I wanted to see if that specialness between all four of us was still there.”

after newsletter promotion

As Last Splash notches up its third decade, the band’s memories and emotions connected to its heyday are inevitably mixed. “It was a blast,” enthuses Kim. “We toured and went to different countries, people were so excited to see us play – it was so much fun. We were playing a lot with Teenage Fanclub at the time and quite a bit with Nirvana, we played with Luscious Jackson, she [Kim nods at Wiggs] fell in love, Urge Overkill … all those people.” If she could go back in time, Kim admits she would “stop drinking so much beer and smoking so much pot. It really amped up because of the touring cycle. If you’re working all the time you just have a certain amount of coffee and it’s not how much you drink when you’re not working. But when you go to work, you drink more coffee. Do that with beer …” Wiggs’s regrets are mainly sartorial, relating in particular to a pair of pleated trousers (“my ‘show pants’”) from a San Francisco charity shop. “My other cringe moment is when I see photographs of Lollapalooza and I’m wearing short shorts,” she winces. “Drummers are allowed to wear them but if you’re upfront, you shouldn’t be wearing shorts.”

So much for the Breeders’ unchangeable past. Beyond their 30th anniversary tour dates, the future lies open, as does the question of a new album. MacPherson readily admits he “would love to do another record with the girls” though Kim’s upcoming solo release (which features contributions from the other three) and touring commitments would have to be considered. Asked if she reckons there will be a follow-up to All Nerve, Kim looks expectantly around at her bandmates: “We’re still playing music together so I assume there will be. I mean, I hope. Do you?”

The 30th anniversary reissue of Last Splash is out on 22 September.

The Breeders' Kim Deal Says It’s 'a Big Deal' Olivia Rodrigo Tapped Her '90s Alt-Rock Band for the “Guts” Tour (Exclusive)

T he iconic '90s group will play four nights of the pop-rock superstar's tour as it comes to New York City's Madison Square Garden on April 4, 5, 8 and 9

Olivia Rodrigo once said that she thinks of her life before hearing “Cannonball” by The Breeders and after.

Flash forward to 2024 when the pop-rock star, 21, is out on her first-ever arena tour in support of her sophomore album GUTS — and now the ‘90s alt-rock group fronted by Kim Deal is joining her for four sold-out shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on April 4, 5, 8 and 9.

One can imagine that it’s exciting for the three-time Grammy winner to be playing alongside one of her favorite bands — but as for Deal herself, she’s simply in disbelief that it’s happening at all.

“We’re just from Dayton, Ohio!” jokes Deal, 62, of herself and her bandmates. “We’re really excited. It’s a big deal.”

Related: Olivia Rodrigo's Daring Guts Tour Wardrobe Boasts Hot Pants, Crystals and a Nod to Gwen Stefani

The Breeders frontwoman explains that it was sometime last fall that the band’s management team revealed that the “vampire” singer wanted them to join her at MSG. “I was just like, ‘ What ?’ It was odd!” she recalls.

“Then she began doing more stuff for this album, and you find out she knows Annie Clark [of St. Vincent ] and she listens to all sorts of different music from Billy Joel to Sheryl Crow and it's like, ‘Oh, she's just really into music,’” Deal continued. “Knowing that, it made more sense. She just really liked us!”

While notes of the Last Splash band’s alternative sound is all over GUTS , Deal is also known for being a source of inspiration to young women in rock. After all, she launched the group (also featuring her twin sister Kelley, Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson) as a creative outlet when she felt underused as the bassist in her former band The Pixies.

Still — despite being an indie music legend who was hand-picked to open for Nirvana in 1992 — the rocker admits the scale of Rodrigo’s live show and MSG has been a bit intimidating as she and the band rehearsed for the upcoming shows.

“I have played Madison Square Garden before. It was in 1992 [with The Pixies] and we opened for U2 on the Zoo TV Tour,” the singer/guitarist reflects. “I don’t remember it. I remember the shows that weren't good — those burn into my mind — and it must've been a good show since I can't remember.”

Related: Nicole Kidman Approves of Olivia Rodrigo's Recreation of AMC Theatres Ad: 'Won Me Major Points with My Girls'

While The Breeders joined Foo Fighters out on the road last year where they largely played outdoor amphitheaters, MSG’s capacity of nearly 20,000 and the “get him back!” singer’s production feel “huge” to her. “I told my friend, ‘I just don't know how to get that big,’” Deal says. “He goes, ‘Act like you're yelling at a cop!’ Like, I don't think so. No. He goes, ‘I know! You're Mel Gibson in Braveheart , just stand there and yell, ‘Freedom!’’ and then you'll be that big.”

While Deal says that she also became somewhat concerned about how the younger contingent of Rodrigo’s audience might react to their “loud guitars,” she admits that she thinks it’s “thrilling” they’ll be playing for their most junior crowd to date.

“There are very young girls there, so we’re excited about [that],” she says, mentioning that she thinks it’s pretty special how Rodrigo is imparting her taste and the cult-loved indie band onto a “new generation.”

“When you tell your friend, ‘You should listen to this band,’ I think she's just like that,” Deal says of the pop-rock superstar. “‘You girls and guys need to hear this! This is a good band, and I'm going to have them play for you, so you can see what a good band is.’”

“Maybe that's what she's doing,” the “Divine Hammer” singer adds. “She didn't have to have us!”

Related: Olivia Rodrigo Joined by Sheryl Crow to Perform 'If It Makes You Happy' at 'Guts' World Tour in Nashville

Deal also notes that she has loved to see how the Sour artist has been distributing contraceptives at her shows , advocating for abortion access and donating proceeds of her ticket sales to her non-profit Fund For Good . “The announcement about her giving out condoms? Yes. I loved it. Plan B? I loved it. I was like, ‘Oh, f--- yes, you go girl!’” she explains.

It’s been fulfilling to see in part because “she doesn’t have to do that,” but also because Deal remembers how the alt-rock and riot grrrl scenes that have inspired Rodrigo were using their platforms similarly in the ‘90s. “When we were playing [ Lollapalooza in ‘94], there were get out the vote booths, Right to Choose booths … gay rights. There has been a lot of activism for voting and for women's rights and women's health and reproductive rights for decades within [the scene].”

Never miss a story — sign up for  PEOPLE's free daily newsletter  to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Deal describes The Breeder’s appearance on The GUTS Tour — which revels in Rodrigo’s feminine take on teenage rebellion and emotion — as especially exciting, since the group came out of a music landscape when women in rock were really beginning to carve out their own lane.

“I do remember there was a loneliness back in the day when I was out with The Pixies and I was the only girl on tour,” Deal recalls, sharing that there were times where “oppressive, menacing” encounters out on the road made her feel unwelcome.

Bands like Sonic Youth , Bikini Kill, post-punk outfit L-Seven, alt-rockers Throwing Muses, the British group Th' Faith Healers and Danish band Bettie Serveert, as well as hip-hop stars like Queen Latifah and Salt-N-Pepa , were sources of inspiration for Deal and The Breeders.

“I can be told so many times that there just weren’t a lot of women back in the day. And that's not true. There were tons of women back in the day,” she says.

Deal also reminisces about the riot grrrl movement and scene leaders like Kathleen Hanna who were advocating for women to feel seen in and outside of music. “She was out there up in the Northwest saying things like, ‘Make room for us in the front!’” the musician says of the Bikini Kill frontwoman, now 55.

“It was really a good way of looking at things that nobody was looking at before. And they were cool bands, cool people saying, ‘Give us some room. This is ridiculous,’” she adds, recalling queues of people waiting to crowd surf and stage dive, and countless Doc Martens being thrown on stage and hitting concert-goers in the head.

While Deal might be rather humble when she’s been called an inspiration herself, it all but makes sense the alt-rock icon is taking the stage with Gen Z’s own riot grrrl-inspired rockstar. Even months ago, Rodrigo expressed how much wisdom she hopes to absorb from the Pod group when they cross paths at MSG.

“It really is exciting that I think it's just Olivia,” The Breeders vocalist reiterates of how the hitmaker tapped The Breeders for The GUTS Tour bill. “I think everybody will be cool about it, obviously, because we're the act that she chose.”

The Amplifier

The ultimate judee sill primer.

A new documentary puts a spotlight on the ’70s musician. Listen to 10 of her essential songs.

the breeders tour merch

By Lindsay Zoladz

Dear listeners,

I first encountered the music of Judee Sill a little over a decade ago, when, on a whim at a record store, I blind-bought a reissue of her 1973 album, “Heart Food.” It’s since become a favorite of mine — an LP that somehow marries the searching spirit of Laurel Canyon folk with the technical grandeur of Bach. Finding it impossible to settle on a single descriptor of her music, Sill once called it “occult holy Western baroque gospel.” In an interview featured in the new documentary “Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill” (which is now playing in New York and available to rent on various streaming platforms), she says that what she aims to capture in her songs is “that moment of redemption, where the lowest thing and the highest thing meet.”

Her life was full of those moments. By her early 20s, Sill had endured an abusive childhood and was struggling with a $150-a-day heroin addiction; one of the most succinctly characteristic facts of her youth was that she learned how to play gospel music when she was the church organist at her reform school. Following a stint in prison and the unexpected death of her only brother, she devoted herself with an almost religious fervor to becoming a great singer-songwriter.

Sill is one of those artists who should have been more commercially successful than she was, and “Lost Angel” is filled with her marquee peers — Graham Nash , Linda Ronstadt , David Crosby — praising her talents and speculating why it didn’t happen for her. Maybe she was too obstinate or self-destructive; maybe her vision was a tad too strange for middle-of-the-road record-buyers in the early ’70s. Or maybe her record company was too focused on promoting other musicians. Sill was the first new artist signed to David Geffen’s nascent Asylum Records, and when the two brilliant albums she made for the label failed to find a large audience, Geffen transformed, in her mind, from a savior to a scapegoat. It was probably some combination of all of these factors that kept her music in relative obscurity, and after a series of unfortunate accidents that once again triggered her drug habit, Sill succumbed to her addiction in 1979 and died at 35.

The two dazzling studio albums she completed during her lifetime, her 1971 self-titled debut and the even more compositionally ambitious “Heart Food,” were out of print when she died but reissued by Rhino Records in 2003. ( Jim O’Rourke also mixed some of the unfinished material that Sill intended for her third album on a collection released in 2005.) The documentary features impassioned interviews with younger artists — Weyes Blood ; Adrianne Lenker and Buck Meek of Big Thief — who have since discovered Sill’s music, making the case that she’s more popular and influential now than she’s ever been.

Even so, Sill is hardly a household name, so I wanted to make today’s playlist an introduction to her bewitchingly beautiful music. You’ll hear highlights from both of her albums along with a transfixing demo and recordings of two other artists, the Turtles and Nash’s first band the Hollies , interpreting her songs.

Sill believed deeply in music’s ability to comfort, transport and heal. So leave behind what ails you and, to paraphrase one of my favorite songs of hers , prepare to soar through mercury ripples of sky.

See you in my holiest dreams,

Listen along while you read.

1. judee sill: “there’s a rugged road”.

This tone-setting opening track from “Heart Food” showcases the latticework of Sill’s fingerpicking, her gently elegant way with melody and the psychedelic bent of even her folkiest material: “When the sun goes down at the right time,” she sings in a clarion voice, “she comes winding through the purple haze.” ▶ Listen on Spotify , Apple Music or YouTube

2. Judee Sill: “Jesus Was a Cross Maker”

This was perhaps her most famous song, and almost certainly her most covered . Interviews in “Lost Angel” confirm that Sill wrote this tune about her “unhappy romance” with the singer-songwriter and future Eagles collaborator J.D. Souther. As Sill tells a live audience in one clip, “One morning I woke up and realized ‘he’s a bandit and a heartbreaker’ rhymes with ‘but Jesus was a cross maker.’ And I knew that even that wretched bastard was not beyond redemption.”

▶ Listen on Spotify , Apple Music or YouTube

3. The Turtles: “Lady-O”

Early in her career, Sill wrote several songs for the pop-rock band the Turtles, including this melancholic folk tune that she would record herself a few years later on her debut album. Sill plays guitar and bass on this recording, and she also composed and conducted the orchestral parts.

4. Judee Sill: “The Lamb Ran Away With the Crown”

Here’s another highlight from her self-titled record. What begins as a simple folk song becomes, in its final minute, something impressively sublime thanks to a layered, unexpectedly dense arrangement that foreshadows the more sophisticated fugue form with which Sill would experiment on her next album.

5. Judee Sill: “Soldier of the Heart”

Another shoulda-been-hit, this upbeat, piano-driven number coins the perfect phrase to describe Sill’s mystic warrior outlook on life: “Soldier of the heart, how’d you get so strong?”

6. Judee Sill: “Ridge Rider”

This cowboy ballad — featuring percussion that approximates a horse’s clomp — sketches out an archetype often found in Sill’s music: the romantic loner. “Bless the ridge rider, the ridge he’s riding is mighty thin,” she sings. “I guess the ridge rider forgets he’s traveling with a friend.” In a humorous moment in the documentary, three different men claim that they were the inspiration for this song.

7. Judee Sill: “The Kiss (Solo Demo)”

“I can’t decide if this is a romantic song or a holy song,” Sill said when introducing this tune to a live audience shortly after she wrote it. Her best songs are a little bit of both. The version of “The Kiss” that appears on “Heart Food” is magnificent, but I also love this solo demo version released on the rarities collection “Songs of Rapture and Redemption,” which shows the purity of Sill’s talent.

8. The Hollies: “Jesus Was a Cross Maker”

Sometimes it’s easier to appreciate the uniqueness of Sill’s voice as a songwriter when someone else is singing her songs. Sill’s own version of this single was produced by Graham Nash, and a year later his former band the Hollies released their own more ornately arranged take.

9. Judee Sill: “Lopin’ Along Thru the Cosmos”

There’s a stirring generosity of spirit about this song from the self-titled album, which finds Sill admitting with heartbreaking clarity, “I’m looking so hard for a place to land, I almost forgot how to fly.”

10. Judee Sill: “The Donor”

This eight-minute grand finale of “Heart Food” is probably the most impressive thing Sill ever composed: an intricately arranged, personal plea for God to, in Sill’s words, “give us a break,” that speaks a musical language somewhere between Bacharach and Bach. As the musician Weyes Blood marvels astutely in “Lost Angel,” “She was literally crying out to God for mercy . It’s a level of desperation and vulnerability that totally transcends a lot of the real personal songwriting that was going on at the time.” Just an astonishing piece of music.

Bonus Tracks

In 2103, I wrote a column for Pitchfork that was sort of about my first encounter with Judee Sill’s music, and also about the strange and sprawling “virtual cemetery” Find a Grave. Read it here if you’re so inclined. I stand by my description of the melody of “The Kiss” being “so crystalline and palliative that, if you could drink it, it would probably cure leprosy and make you fall in love with the next person you see.”

Also, this week’s Friday playlist has new music from Sabrina Carpenter , Phish , Phosphorescent and more. Listen here.

Noah Kahan and Olivia Rodrigo

The morning of the Guts World Tour’s first night at Madison Square Garden, a perplexing, 4.8-level earthquake tore through New York City. Minutes later, the famed arena tweeted from its official account, “that was just the earth prepping for Olivia Rodrigo tonight.”

Olivia Rodrigo's Guts World Tour Setlist: All the Songs She Performed Opening Night

That was exactly right, as far as the 21-year-old pop star’s fans were concerned. More than 14,000 of them showed up in purple-hued, sequined droves to watch Rodrigo make her debut at one of the country’s biggest career milestone-marking venues Friday night (April 5), something that’s been a long time coming for the star since she found near-instant global success with Sour in 2021. (Not wanting to “skip steps,” as she told Billboard at the time, the singer stuck to smaller theaters for her first tour in ’22. Now, with a second chart-topping album under her belt thanks to last year’s Guts , Rodrigo is more than ready for not just one, but four sold-out shows at the Garden, the remaining three of which are slated for April 6, 8 and 9.)

Having previously briefly joined Billy Joel at one of his 2022 MSG shows to duet her own hit, “Deja Vu,” as well as “Uptown Girl,” Rodrigo was already a little bit acquainted with the grounds — plus, after being on the road for a month following her kickoff show in Palm Springs Feb. 23, her hour-and-a-half undertaking was already a well-oiled machine by the time she got to New York. Even so, the reigning princess of pop took the stage looking with genuine amazement as her crowd jumped, danced and screamed along to her opening number — “Bad Idea Right?” — making the entire arena pulse, this time without any help from shifting tectonic plates.

From a special guest performance (hello, Noah Kahan !) to a surprise mini High School Musical reunion, see the 8 best moments from the show that followed below.

Hello, Madison Square

Early on in her set, Rodrigo took a moment to acknowledge the magnitude of the night’s hallowed location, where most artists only ever dream of performing. “This is a very special night — my first night at Madison Square Garden,” she said breathlessly, brown eyes wide as they took in the sea of fans in front of her. “It’s incredible. I’m really excited. Tonight’s going to be so f–king fun.”

The artist’s return to New York — which she later asserted is the “greatest city in the world” — was made even more special by the fact that most of the show’s songs were written there , as she now lives in a Greenwich Village apartment. “I’m very, very grateful you’re here,” she added. “Thank you so much.”

WELCOME TO NIGHT 1 💜 #GUTSMSG pic.twitter.com/A3bweim4RI — MSG (@TheGarden) April 6, 2024

Girls Your Age Know Better

While singing her Billboard Hot 100 -topping Guts lead single “Vampire,” Rodrigo prompted the audience to sing — no, scream — the lyric, “Girls your age know better.”

With a crowd full of girls much younger than her in attendance, it was a small but profound way for the pop star to emphasize to them which suitors to steer clear of — hopefully saving many of the kiddos in homemade T-shirts and facepaint from falling into the same traps she did as they grow up.

The Breeders Get Their Flowers

Rodrigo’s premiere performance at Madison Square also marked The Breeders’ first show as Guts Tour openers. After their set, before accompanying herself on piano to sing “Teenage Dream,” the headliner made sure to give the ’90s rock figureheads their flowers.

“How incredible were The Breeders?” she said, smiling. “I’m such a huge fan. I remember my life in two distinct periods: before I heard ‘Cannonball’ and after I heard ‘Cannonball.’ I’m so honored to be playing this show with them.”

The Earthquake of It All

Of course, Rodrigo had to take a second to address the elephant in the room. While flying high over the heads of the crowd on her floating crescent moon set piece, on which she sings the Guts and Sour sister ballads “Logical” and “Enough for You,” the musician quipped, “All I’m thinking is I’m glad the earthquake didn’t happen when I was on this thing.”

A Mini 'High School Musical' Reunion

In between songs, Rodrigo took some time to interact with the crowd, at one point shouting out a group of elementary-age girls in matching purple dresses. “Look at those cuties! How sweet! I love little best friends.”

Then, while asking whether any of her fans had come to the show with their mothers, the former Disney star spotted her own TV mom: Michelle Noh, who played one of her character’s parents on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series . “Oh my goodness!” she chirped. “That’s crazy — speaking of moms — she played my mom on High School Musical ! I didn’t know you were here. Oh my god, that’s amazing. Wow, that is such a meta moment, we actually did not plan that.”

Noah Kahan Makes a Cameo

Perhaps the biggest highlight of the night came midway through the show, when Rodrigo brought out special guest Noah Kahan for a live duet that fans have been craving ever since the “Good 4 U” singer covered the New England native’s hit “Stick Season” on the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge in October.

“I’ve been looking forward to this all tour,” Rodrigo said before Kahan stepped out. “There’s this artist that I really love, and I found his music about a year ago and instantly became obsessed. He’s an incredible songwriter, an incredible singer.”

After sharing a hug, the two performers both played guitars as they traded lines of the “Stick Season” verses, their voices intertwining in harmony during the chorus. “Noah Kahan, everybody!” Rodrigo cheered as the folk singer exited the stage.

Happy Birthday, Moa

One of the best parts of Rodrigo’s show was her palpably strong friendships with her band, which is made up of all-female musicians. During a break between songs, she made sure that bassist Moa Munoz — who got her big moment playing the solo riffs to “Jealousy, Jealousy” at another point — got the birthday celebration she deserved by getting the whole arena onboard for a feel-good group sing-along to “Happy Birthday.”

Carrie Bradshaw AF

Rodrigo paid one last tribute to New York City by taking the stage for encore performances of “Good 4 U” and “Get Him Back!” in a tank top reading, “Carrie Bradshaw AF.”

As the Sex and the City leading lady might say: And just like that… Liv’s first-ever show at the Garden was in the books.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

Taste of the Masters: Bringing Augusta National's food experience to patrons at home

From start to finish, the Masters Tournament has an identity all its own. Whether it’s the drive up Magnolia Lane or the green jacket donned by the victor, the Masters is known for a multitude of things: azaleas in full bloom in early spring, Rae’s Creek, Butler Cabin and the quintessential selection of food and drinks enjoyed exclusively by patrons in attendance. Or rather, that used to be the case.

Insert "Taste of the Masters," a food and beverage initiative spearheaded by Augusta National in 2020 when the tournament took place at a non-traditional time, in November, with no patrons on-site due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic challenged the sports and entertainment industry to adjust and adapt, and the Masters was no different. It began with a simple question from the team at Augusta National: What are some ways to help bring the experience to fans and make this a memorable tournament?

Aside from opening an online patron shop that allowed ticketed patrons to purchase Masters merchandise from home (the Masters only sells official Masters merchandise on the grounds at Augusta National), the team also came up with the idea of selling Masters food and drink kits to those ticketed patrons, which they dubbed "Taste of the Masters."

The club and hospitality team spearheaded this initiative by identifying the items that represented the Masters best. Without hesitation, the answer was obvious: pimento cheese.

There may be no other concession item in sports that holds the weight or reputation of Augusta National’s pimento cheese sandwiches. With the perfect amount of spice paired with cheesy creaminess and jammed between two pieces of fresh white bread, the pimento cheese sandwich has been a staple on the menu board at Augusta since the 1950s.

Beyond pimento cheese, the team knew they needed to fill the kits with other options to satisfy the appetites of all who planned to enjoy the meals from home. Pork bar-b-que and egg salad were added as entree options, as were sides including Augusta’s signature chocolate chip cookies and potato chips.

When tasked with the challenge of replicating the on-site experience, however, a final few pieces were vital. While the food offerings satisfied the taste aspect, to really give it that Masters feel they added authentic plastic Masters cups and sheets of the iconic Masters checkerboard serving paper.

The "Taste of the Masters" was such a hit that the team brought it back for the 2021 Masters, which featured partial patron attendance. The kits were now available to everyone, not just ticketed patrons, and sold out even faster.

And that was a wrap on the kits, or so the team thought.

The kits were discontinued in 2022, as patrons on-site could once again enjoy the full offerings while strolling the grounds. But overwhelming fan feedback suggested that the kits were missed.

The team was not expecting "Taste of the Masters" to become a fan staple, but as folks expressed how important it was to have the kits, using them to create or enhance their traditions around watching the tournament together, it became clear it had. Augusta National recognized the opportunity for people to recreate the patron experience at home, and so, "Taste of the Masters" returned in 2023.

For 2024, the Augusta National team continued to look at ways to evolve and perfect the project. One enhancement for this year: Fans have had a say in what's included thanks to their feedback. Bar-b-que potato chips, Georgia pecan caramel popcorn and Masters coasters are included in the kit, with the popcorn’s inclusion a direct result of fan feedback. The team even added a smaller tasting kit as an option this year, also a direct result of fan feedback, which also includes fun accessories like food item placards and miniature Masters flag toothpicks to hold sandwiches together.

For Augusta National, the kits are yet another opportunity to go above and beyond for fans across the country while also paying homage to the tournament's roots in Augusta, Georgia. The food and beverage experience is part of Masters history, which started with the vision of Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts, who believed that food was key to the Masters’ evolution as an elite sporting experience for patrons. The two tournament pioneers wanted the menu to reflect a southern-style picnic, with sandwiches as an easy option that locals could create in their homes and bring to the course for the patrons.

The menu has come a long way since the Masters inception in 1934, with the Taste of the Masters as simply the next step in its evolution. What originally started as an almost regional, exclusive offering for ticketed fans in 2020 has now grown to a nationwide fan favorite in households across the country. As for whether the Masters pimento cheese sandwich has made its way to all 50 states, it’s hard to say, but 2024 is the first year where shipping to Alaska and Hawaii is available. And why stop there? Fan interest north of the border suggests that "Taste of the Masters" could be headed to Canada as well.

While nothing is guaranteed, "Taste of the Masters" looks to be around for the long haul.
