We’re sharing some essential and useful travel tips you should know before visiting. Not only will these tips save you time and money, but they’ll also take the stress out of planning your trip!

Things to Know Before You Travel to Krabi

Is krabi worth visiting.

If you’ve always wanted to travel to Thailand, but weren’t too keen on battling the sea of tourists in Bangkok and Phuket, then Krabi is a great travel option. It may not be as serene and peaceful as Khao Sok National Park or have the beautiful beaches Koh Phangan is known for.

But it does strike a great balance between experiencing the hustle and bustle of Thai culture, whilst also having the option of escaping to more tranquil natural surroundings. So if this is what you’re looking for, Krabi is oh-so worth visiting!

What is Krabi Most Well-Known For?

Krabi is most well-known for its majestic limestone cliffs, attracting rock climbers from all over the world attempting to conquer the cliffs of Ton Sai Beach and Railay Beach.

It’s also popular for island hopping. From Krabi, you can easily find day trips to see Phi Phi Island , Hong Island , Bamboo Island and the Four Islands (Phra Nang Beach, Tup Island, Chicken Island and Poda Island).

Island Day Trips from Krabi

Island day trips (or island hopping) is one of the top things to do in Krabi. But we’re going to be honest- it gets crowded. Especially during peak season.

The only way to beat the crowds is to go really early and to book a private tour. Chartering your own private boat can cost an arm and a leg in most countries. But luckily not in Thailand!

You can easily charter your own boat for under €50 ($55) per person if you’re traveling in a group of 4. Here are the options:

  • From Krabi: Private luxury long tail boat island hopping tour
  • From Ao Nang or Krabi: Private island hopping tour in a luxury long tail boat

You can also go scuba diving around Krabi. If you want to learn how to get scuba diving certified, find out what to expect in our Scuba Diving Beginners guide.

7 Top Travel Tips for Krabi, Thailand

1. daily budget for krabi.

Our Krabi travel tips guide would be incomplete without providing a daily budget guideline. Excluding accommodation and flights to Krabi, we estimate:

  • Western cuisine: Around €50 ($55) per person for 3 meals, snacks and drinks
  • Thai cuisine: Around €25 ($27) per person for 3 meals, snacks and drinks

Like we mentioned in our  Hong Kong budget travel tips and culture guide, eating local food will save you a lot of money when travelling to most countries. But we understand that some of you may have food allergies or particular dietary requirements, so we thought it would be helpful to share with you the budget for eating western cuisine too.

We are both lucky in that we don’t have any food allergies, so we generally just follow the “see food” diet.

If you love massages like us (or a pedicure if you’re Michael), budget another €7 – €9 ($8 to $10) for a 60 minute massage.

2. Money and Banking Travel Tips in Krabi

Should you buy forex before travelling to thailand.

The Thai Baht is the official currency of Thailand. You get a lot of bang for your buck if you’re holding American Dollars, the British Pound or the Euro (which gets you around 39 Thai Baht per Euro depending on the exchange rate).

Although Thailand is extremely tourist friendly, it is not card friendly at all. It is best to always have cash on you as most places (including some hotels) will charge you an extra 3% fee on your bill if you pay by card.

travel tip for withdrawing money in krabi thailand by ATMs

You can also draw cash when you’re in Thailand, but the withdrawal fees are not cheap. The withdrawal fee is 220 Thai Baht (or €6 or $7) per withdrawal. All the ATM’s charge the same withdrawal fee except AEON, which is slightly cheaper at 150 Thai Baht (or €4 or $5).

The only downside is that there aren’t many AEON ATM’s around. They’re normally located at a local mall outside the main town area. Draw as much as you feel comfortable carrying (put some in your hotel safe) since you pay per withdrawal and NOT per amount.

If you’re interested in how we always get the best exchange rate buying foreign currency for our travels (and free cash withdrawals), read our Revolut travel card guide.

3. Getting a SIM Card in Thailand

How much do sim cards cost in thailand.

Another top money saving travel tip for Krabi is to avoid high roaming charges.

We highly recommend buying a tourist SIM card when you arrive in Thailand. Internet is super fast and reliable in Thailand, so you won’t be disappointed.

You can easily buy one at any 7 Eleven, network operator’s store or even at the airport.

If you are able to delay that post-flight internet craving, you can save some money by NOT buying your SIM card at the airport. Vendors usually add a premium at the airports to take advantage of internet-deprived travellers. So hold off just a little longer if possible.

We bought the TrueMove Tourist SIM card for 699 Thai Baht (under €18 or $20). You get unlimited data with this SIM and it is valid for 15 days.

If you’re not staying so long, there is also an 8 day option that costs 499 Thai Baht (under €11 or $12). If you’re not sure how long you’re staying, you can always buy the cheaper option and top up later. Topping up will extend your SIM’s ‘expiry date’.

Besides money, make sure you bring your passport or identity card when buying your SIM card in Thailand. The store or vendor will need it for the mandatory SIM card registration.

e-SIMs in Thailand

Another way to get a tourist SIM card in Thailand is to use an e-SIM. It’s a bit more expensive, but oh-so-convenient. Everything is done online and the SIM is activated instantly.

A 7-day eSIM is the cheapest with only 1GB of data. This should be sufficient if you’re just using it for Google Maps, finding restaurants or checking e-mails. But you can also buy a 30-day eSIM with more data (3GB to 20GB) on SimLocal .

4. Health and Hygiene

Is tap water safe to drink in thailand.

No, don’t attempt it even if you think you have an invincible stomach. Always drink boiled or treated water.

As people who promote eco-travel and environmental sustainability, it is very hard for us to recommend buying bottled water. But there are just some places that you travel to, where tap water is not drinkable and bottled water is the only option.

In this case, we recommend that if you do buy bottled water, keep the bottle and ask for a refill when you go to restaurants or hotels where they provide safe drinking water. This will significantly help minimise the amount of plastic waste created.

can you drink tap water in thailand

In Koh Phangan , we found these green Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration machines where you can refill your bottles for just 1 Thai Baht per litre (basically free).

This was the best discovery on our trip. Not only do you reduce tons of plastic waste, it is also super affordable.

For us personally, it was encouraging to see developing countries like Thailand implementing environmentally friendly initiatives in an effort to protect their country’s natural beauty.

The bad news is that we didn’t find any of these machines in Krabi…

5. Transport in Krabi

It is really easy to get around in Krabi. The main town area is usually small enough that everything is within walking distance. But if you want to venture out a bit, there are public buses, taxis and tuk tuks available.

public bus in krabi and aonang

You could also opt for the more adventurous mode of transport and rent a scooter. This is usually our most preferred mode of transport as we like to feel the wind in our hair and wander around at a leisurely pace.

How To Get To Krabi, Thailand

Thailand may be a developing country, but its public transport system is extensive and really affordable too. You can easily get from Bangkok or Phuket to Krabi by bus, train or even by ferry. You can literally pick and choose depending on your budget and how much time you have.

Here are some of the most popular ways to get to Krabi:

  • Phuket to Krabi
  • Bus from Bangkok to Krabi
  • From Koh Lanta to Krabi
  • Chiang Mai to Krabi
  • From Koh Phi Phi to Krabi

If it’s your first time in Thailand, make sure to read our Thailand Public Transportation guide so you know what to expect. If you’re flying directly into Krabi Airport, here are some airport transfer options for you:

  • Krabi Airport transfer via Shared Van
  • Private transfer from Krabi Airport

Is It Safe To Rent A Motorcycle in Thailand?

We’ve heard our fair share of horrible scooter accidents in South East Asia, but we still believe it is an amazing and affordable way to travel and experience the country like a local.

We are not regular motorcycle riders (we don’t even have a motorcycle licence), but we do have a driver’s licence, wear helmets and make sure to always drive at a safe speed (don’t drink and drive).

We’ve rode scooters in Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand and have had a great experience in all those countries.

travel tips for krabi scooter rentals

Tips for Motorcycle Rentals in Krabi

Our top travel tip for renting scooters in Krabi (or anywhere in South East Asia) is to test drive the bike around the vicinity of the shop you rented from to check if everything works. Lights, brakes, diesel gauge, basically all the important stuff before you get on your way.

Also, wear sunnies during your ride so the wind doesn’t dry your eye balls out. Not only will you look extra cool, but you’ll have a much better riding experience when you don’t have to squint your way through it.

In Krabi or Aonang, you can rent a scooter for 200 Thai Baht (under €6 or $7) per day. Prices are pretty standardized so don’t worry about ‘being taken for a ride’ with inflated prices. It costs around 100 (under €3 or $4) Thai Baht to refill the scooter from empty to full.

rent scooter in thailand safety tips

What You Need to Rent a Motorcycle or Scooter

  • Your passport (they will keep this until you return the bike)
  • Show them your drivers or motorbike licence
  • No cash deposit required

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

Travel insurance will protect you against injury, illness, theft and even trip cancellation. It’s comprehensive cover in case anything goes wrong. We never go on a trip without it as we’ve had to use it many times in the past. Here are our favourite companies that offer the best value and service:

  • SafetyWing  (best for everyone)
  • AXA  (for US residents)
  • Outbacker  (for UK residents)
  • Allianz  (for Germany residents)

6. Where to Stay in Krabi

We chose to stay at Ao Nang Beach because we are complete beach bums and ocean lovers. It’s a short 20 minute scooter ride from Krabi town. We preferred it because it was closer to Railay Beach and the stunning Tab Kak Hang Nak Nature Trail, which we explored on our 3 day Krabi itinerary .

best sunset beach in krabi

For accommodation, anywhere within walking distance to the main road 4203 (parallel to the beach) is central.

We wouldn’t recommend wandering too far off beyond Nemo2 Resort because tour transfers (which are usually included in tour or ferry packages) will not venture beyond that hotel to come collect you.

If you aren’t a light packer, that means you may need to drag your luggage along the side of the road under the blazing sun and risk a T-shirt tan.

Avani Aonang Cliff Krabi Resort

In Aonang, we stayed at the  Avani Aonang Cliff Krabi Resort . We loved it because it is a heavenly sanctuary from all the hustle and bustle on the streets.

Aonang Cliff Beach Resort view

The hotel also has the most amazing views in Aonang because it is embedded into the cliffside facing the ocean. The cherry on top is that you can enjoy this view from their magnificent infinity pool while enjoying a cocktail or two.

Best hotel to stay in Aonang

Overall, it’s a great accommodation option whether you are a couple, a family or just looking to celebrate a special occasion.

For families with young toddlers, there is a dedicated play area in the hotel so the parents can go get a well-deserved break at the spa. There’s also a gym if you’ve indulged too much on delicious Thai cuisine.

7. Best Time to Visit Krabi

The best time to visit Krabi is between November and April, outside of the monsoon season.

Bear in mind that it will be more expensive travelling during this period, as this is typically their peak travel season, and for good reason. Some activities such as visiting the Blue Pool (part of Emerald Pool) and diving around the Similan Islands are not open for tourists from May to the end of October.

krabi aonang to emerald pool

Although it may be an inconvenience for tourists, it’s good that these unique, natural ecosystems are given a 6 month break from thousands of visiting tourists so that they can remain healthy.

Avoid the Tourist Crowds in Thailand

Thailand is one of our favourite countries to travel to. We love how friendly the locals are, their delicious food and it is an absolute paradise for outdoor enthusiasts like ourselves.

The only downside to Thailand is that some places are incredibly touristy, which can dampen the travel experience. That’s why we always search for less touristy, hidden gems to explore.

tips on travelling to krabi

If you have the same travel style, then you should make a stop at Khao Sok National Park . This little gem gets compared to Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, but without the tourist hordes. It is one of the most majestic and unique landscapes we’ve seen in Thailand.

If you’re more about that beach life, then find the best beaches in Koh Phangan with our guide.

Krabi Travel Itinerary for 3-4 Days in 2023 (Updated)

Hello, adventurous people! Here is the perfect Krabi Travel Itinerary if you only have 4 to 3 days in Krabi. I was lucky enough to spend an entire month here and let me tell you, it is one of my very favorite places I have ever been. The vibe here is laid back and not pushy, the food is delicious and the things to do in Krabi are virtually endless!

You can take this list of what to do in Krabi for 3 days with a grain of salt and change it up to meet your interests, but I have put it together with location and fun in mind.

If you are planning to have a beach-filled trip, check out these amazing beach hotels in Krabi . You can also stay a little further outside of town if you are looking for a budget trip.

One of the very best things about visiting Thailand as a whole is how affordable it is . You can plan for your Krabi trip cost to be around as little as $30 (USD) per person per day if you have a budget. On our trip to Krabi, we spent around $40 a day for 2 people. Use this Krabi travel guide and you are sure to stay within budget.

The Ultimate Krabi Travel Itinerary For 3 Days

a man looking out at Ao Nang in Krabi Thailand

Day 1: Krabi Travel Itinerary 3 Days

You can easily tour Krabi on your own with this itinerary, but if you want you could always book private tours in Krabi . There are advantages to touring Krabi alone and with groups. If you want to rent a scooter or car to get around you will have no trouble finding all of these attractions in Krabi.

How to Get Around Krabi Town

Ask your accommodation if they have any hookups on scooters , this is how I have found the best prices and most reliable people. If you are not into riding scooters, I suggest you download the app grab. You can easily call for rides, and food delivery, and it is very affordable.

There are also red trucks and tuk tuk’s that ride up and down the streets, you need cash and be sure to check the price before you hop in.

Stop 1: Take a Long Tail to Railay Beach

One of the very best Krabi Thailand things to do is visit Railay Beach . That is why it is the first thing on the list of Krabi things to do blog. This beautiful peninsula is only accessible by boat and has stunning crystal-clear water and the most picturesque backdrop.

The best way to get to Railay is to head to Ao Nang Beach and find the stand on the very end of the beachfront. You cannot miss it there is usually a big crowd out front. I waited no more than 10 minutes after paying and was on my way to Railay.

Ask for a one-way ticket instead of a round trip. This is because when you do the round trip they give you time to get back on the boat. You want time to relax and take in the views. When you are ready to leave head to the middle of the beach and find the guy selling tickets back.

You will not have to wait long and expect to pay 100 baht per person each way.

Once you are there you can take a rock climbing tour , enjoy swimming in the ocean, or layout in the sand!

Stop 2: Phra Nang Cave Beach

Phra nang beach krabi thailand travel guide

Stop 3: Diamond Cave

While you are on Railay head over to the Diamond Cave . It is located on the east side of the beach and is only about a 10-15 minute walk away from where they drop you off. Diamond Cave gets its name from the pretty glittery crystals that you can see shining on the walls and ceiling. It is estimated to be over 10,000 years old!

When I visited in 2023 it was 40 baht per person (less than a dollar) to enter. You will want to wear your shoes and be ready to be amazed. And if you are wondering if is krabi safe? It is super safe and I never encountered thefts, it is also best to go ahead and bring all of your belongings with you.

The Diamond Cave hours are 8:30 to 4:30 so plan accordingly.

Stop 3: Visit the Grotto Restaurant For Lunch

Now that you have spent a few hours exploring it is time for lunch. There are plenty of places to enjoy lunch on Railay, but the very best is the Grotto Restaurant . Walk to the west side from the Diamond Cave to the Ravadaee Resort .

You do not have to stay there to dine you are more than welcome. But it is best to make a reservation on the day you are planning to go.

Now on to the good stuff. The Grotto is on a limestone cliff with a romantic vibe with a view of the Andaman Sea. I ordered the shrimp appetizer and mussels pasta and it was done perfectly. It is more expensive than other places, but it is your first day in Krabi, treat yourself!

Also, check out the best restaurants in Krabi Town for other dining options.

Stop 4: Head Back to Ao Nang For Shopping

Next up on our travel guide to Krabi is to take the long tail boat back to Ao Nang. While you are here it is the perfect excuse to do a little shopping. There are all types of shops from local vendors on the street to high-class shopping.

We got the famous elephant shirts for 100 Baht ($3), and the cutest flip-flops I’ve ever had for $7 and if I had room in my travel bookbag I would have bought more. But being a digital nomad comes with its ups and downs like that.

Did you know that weed in Thailand is legal? Check out my high guide for weed in Krabi!

Stop 5: Krabi Night Market in Ao Nang Beach

After you are done shopping till you drop, it is time on our itinerary to Krabi to grab some street food at the night market. You cannot miss the market, it is right along the beachfront. It opens up around 5 p.m. and stays open until 10 .

You will find any and every type of food here. I started my meal off with chicken skewers, cheese french fries, and Massaman curry . There is a big restaurant-type stand where you can order fresh curries and ice cream as well.

Since I spent a month in Krabi, I went back here many times. I can also recommend the salted pressed fish cooked over an open flame . You may want to share this with a friend or come super hungry. There are also amazing sushi rolls, silly corndogs with fun toppings, and a whole section of Halal food.

Take a few minutes to do a lap before you order anything you do not want to fill up before you get a chance to check it all out. Do not leave this off of your itinerary for Krabi it is one of the very best things to do.

Day 2: Krabi Island Hopping Tour

When it comes to Krabi day trips you have to go island hopping . There are a few different ways to go about island hopping. I was lucky enough to have friends in town that I met through a co-working group in Turkey. So we booked a private boat and the tour guide took care of everything for us.

We got lunch, water, and a day full of fun. We all brought snacks and pitched in with drinks and a few joints on the boat. Weed is legal in Thailand if you don’t already know.

We paid about $30 USD each, but there were 8 of us. You can also head down to the beach in Ao Nang and ask for a long-tail boat for the day! But the island of Thailand Krabi guide you have to check out are the following:

Stop 1: Poda Island is one of the Most Popular Islands in Krabi

The first stop on your Krabi travel Itinerary island tour is Poda Island . This is one of the prettiest islands with a white sandy beach and beautiful clear water for snorkeling .

This is the island you will see on the postcards and the most popular photos of Krabi. Be sure to bring your phone and have it charged you will not want to miss your Instagram-worthy photos!

You can click here to book a speed boat tour if you are not into long tails!

Stop 2: Chicken Island for Fun Photos and the Sandbar

Next up is Chicken Island. This is a great stop for snorkeling with colorful fish and relaxing on the scheduled beach. This island gets its name because the top of it looks like a chicken’s head and neck. This is also all over insta and you will want to grab a few photos here.

Most tour guides will give you about 30 minutes here before heading on to the next stop on the Krabi island tour.

Click here to book the tour!

Stop 3: Tup Island is right next to Chicken Island

After Chicken Island ask your captain to take you to Tup Island . This is a tiny island with no accommodations or places to eat. But that is what makes it one of the best day trips from Krabi. During low tide, there is a sandbar that connects Tup to Chicken Island that you can easily cross.

Ask your captain to plan your stops accordingly so you will be able to walk across the islands. You will feel like a luxurious Tom Hanks on Castaway.

Be sure to bring a cover-up, swimming shirt, hat, and sunnies on your boat tour . A whole day in the sun can be daunting and you will for sure want to cover up. This is also a great spot to stop for lunch it is about halfway through your day out on the water.

boats on the Krabi travel Itinerary in the clear waters

Stop 4: Hong Island is one of the Very best Islands off Krabi

Take a short ride over from Tup Island and check out Hong Island. This is a part of the Than Bok Khorani National Park. There is a small entrance fee of 300 baht ($8) to get in.

The beach is separated into two sections by a big rock in the middle. The sand is extra soft and white here and it is an amazing last top on your island day of the Krabi travel Itinerary.

Ask your boat captain to take you back to the pier and head back to your accommodation. Take a power nap, shower, and change your clothes. Grab a coffee or beer and you are ready to get back out there.

If you are looking for another island in Thailand, off the beaten path Ko Yao Yai island is an amazing one to check out!

Stop 5: Back to the Ao Nang Krabi Nightlife

Since you explored Ao Nang the night before, tonight you may be ready to party. I have put together my favorite Krabi Nightlife spots!

The best places to grab a drink or joint are on the strip in Ao Nang. One of my favorite krabi hidden gems to visit while I was here was the Joy Beach Cafe .

It has a laid-back vibe and it is right on the beach. Try to get there in time for sunset, it is the perfect way to end your beach day. It is about 15-20 minutes outside of Ao Nang Mueang Krabi district.

If you are looking for more of a party vibe you can check out K-Hostel on the strip , or the Jamaican Bar right down the way. The Hostel always has the hippest DJs and they have bar crawls three times a week (It is a great way to make friends).

The Jamaican bar has amazing live music every night. Take your pick between these three places to have the perfect night out on your Krabi travel Itinerary.

Sidenote: There is also a 7-island tour with a BBQ dinner at sunset if you want to spend the entire day on the water.

Day 3: in Krabi Travel Guide Out in the Jungle, Hiking & Krabi Town

Your last day on your 3 days 2 nights Krabi itinerary is a chill day out in nature. Although Krabi is an amazing city with so much to do, the real treasure is outside of the city. Sleep in or get up early to beat the crowds.

Stop 1: Krabi Klong Thom Hot Springs to Recover

If you stayed out too late the night before you are going to need to head to the Krabi Klong Thom Hot Springs first . It is out in the jungle and is known for its special healing powers . This is due to the minerals in the water.

The water at the Klong Thom Hot Springs is warm because the water runs through the thermal chambers of the volcanic chambers.

Sit in the hot springs and relax. There are different-sized pools that will leave your skin feeling soft and heal any sunburn you may have gotten the day before. The springs are open all year long and there is a small fee (of 200 baht $5 per person) to enter.

a girl walking along the beaches with a green bathing suite and cute hat

Stop 2: Emerald Pool or Kra Morakot is a must-visit

One of the best things on your 3 days itinerary in Krabi is the Emerald Pool . This is also located in the Thung Teao Forrest. It is one of the most famous attractions in Krabi for the beautiful clear but green water.

It is surrounded by a dense forest and you have to walk the nature trails to get there. You may run into a large variety of birds, monkeys, and plenty of butterflies.

You can only swim in the designated areas, but trust me it is enough. If you do anything on this Thailand krabi guide please make it the Emerald Pool, it was one of my very favorite things.

Stop 3: Floating Restaurant at Klong Prasong for Lunch

The Floating Restaurant at Klong Prasong is one of the best places to stop after visiting the Emerald Pools. It is close by and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The restaurant is on a floating raft-like structure and boasts beautiful views of the Andaman.

The food was very fresh and they used local ingredients. They have yummy Thai food, and a few international dishes to pick from. If you have time before your next stop you could book a canal tour of the Klong Prasong canal here as well.

rice and veggies on a white plate with cucumbers

Stop 4: Tiger Cave Temple Hike Day Itinerary

If you are not too tired after your day of relaxation in the jungle, the Tiger Cave Temple hike or the Wat Tham is an amazing and heart-pounding adventure. When I arrived they wanted to sign in and asked if could donate any money. I gave a few baht, but it’s free and you do not have to pay anything.

I say my was heart pounding because you have to walk up 1260 steps to get to the top. It is almost straight up the whole time and does not be afraid to take breaks. I probably took 5.

Once you reach the top you will be greeted by an amazingly huge large golden Buddha . You have to take your shoes off to walk around the temple grounds and be careful because the resident monkey almost stole mine. And on that note, wear comfy shoes , you can do it in flops but you will regret it.

There are so many different things to check out once you get there. Including the spectacular view of the Krabi mountain ranges. I was there at sunset and it did not disappoint. If you are planning on going around sunset as I did, bring a headlap or make sure your phone is charged because walking down at night is very dark and full of monkeys.

big Buddha at the tiger cave in krabi

Stop 5: Head to the Krabi Night Market

Since the other two nights you will be chilling in Ao Nang, you should go to Krabi Town for your last night . For the perfect last night out on your Krabi Thailand travel guide head to the Krabi night market, also known as the walking street, if you are in town on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.

Here you will find the very best traditional Thai street food. My favorite dish was green curry, although you can get that anywhere. Plus, the market is right on the main Marhaht Road, and the entire area is closed down.

Enjoy walking around listening to the live street performances. There are also so many more vendors to grab all your souvenirs, freshly squeezed juices, and flavorful iced teas. One of my favorite things about my time in Thailand was how seriously they took their drinks.

If you are not visiting on the weekend you could head to one of the many rooftop restaurants for dinner. My favorite restaurant was the Gecko Cabane Restaurant . It is very cozy and you can get a large variety of seafood here and it is right in the middle of town.

I ordered the shrimp Pad Thai and it was fresh and filling. Mix this Krabi travel Itinerary up to ensure you visit the night market if you can, it is a special experience that you will surely love.

I have updated this article for 4 days 3 nights Krabi itinerary. I feel like taking a tour to Phi Phi is to important to leave out! And even though I made this list for 4 days, you never know how many days to spend in Krabi!

4 days itinerary in krabi

Wat Kaew Korawaram

Since this could be the last day of your Krabi 4 days trip, you should check out Krabis biggest wat, the Wat Kaew Korawaram.

Visiting Wat Kaew Korawaram in Krabi Town, Thailand, this is a serene and enriching cultural experience that cannot be missed! It’s perched on a hill above Krabi, this largest Buddhist temple offers panoramic views of downtown Krabi.

The temple’s architecture, while simpler than most Thai temples, exudes a unique charm. Inside, you’ll find a peaceful atmosphere that’s perfect for reflection and relaxation. This Wat dates back to 1887, and provides not just a visual treat, but also a glimpse into the region’s past. Remember, you must dress in respectful clothing is necessary for entry.

  • Krabi trip package to the wat with a city tour and massage at the end.

Koh Phi Phi Island

Starting your journey from Krabi to Phi Phi Island by boat is nothing short of magical. As you sail off, feel the wind whips through your hair and the breathtaking beauty of water unfolds all around you.

When you arrive at the Phi Phi Islands, you will be immediately greeted by crystal-clear waters and sea cliffs that seem to kiss the sky. Your tour includes stops at several islands. My favorite was the Pileh Lagoon. Here you will want to take a dip and snorkel with the colorful fish and coral, creating a magical underwater experience. Meanwhile, ‘The Beach’ area offers the perfect spot to sit in the sun.

When it’s time for lunch, your boat will provide a buffet with Thai food and fruit right on the beach.

The highlight of the tour is the visit to Maya Bay. This spot, made famous by the film ‘The Beach’, is a sight to behold.

Best Restaurants in Krabi

So I didn’t give you spots for all your meals, but I have put together a list of the best restaurants in Krabi .

  • Jenna’s Bistro & Wine : is highly recommended for its Western food offerings with a touch of Asian flavors.
  • Lae Lay Grill : Known for its exceptional seafood, Lae Lay Grill also offers stunning views, particularly at sunset. And it is tucked away from the crowds.
  • Ruen Mai Restaurant : Located in Klong Chilat, Ruen Mai offers a taste of authentic Thai cuisine.

Nightlife in Krabi Town and Ao Nang

Krabi n ightlife can be both laid-back and wild. Enjoy live music at hotspots like Booze Bar and Joy Bar. For craft beer lovers, Hobby Hops Craft Beer Bar and Restaurant is a great spot, and Fubar 2 provides a fun night out experience.

In Ao Nang, the nightlife is more wild. Popular spots include Bamboo Bar, Boogie Bar, and Ao Nang Center Point. Amy’s Bar in Soi RCA, Tribe Beach Bar, and Bang Bang Bar are also hotspots. For a different kind of night experience, try Krabi Pub Crawl and Local Market Krabi. This is the area where people who backpack to Krabi hang out.

Which Tourist SIM Card is Best for Krabi Travel

Airalo.com is my favorite e-sim to use when traveling. It is so simple to use, all you have to do it download the app and install it on your phone, and as soon as you enter the Thai phone lines it automatically connects.

If your phone is not compatible with E-sims, then I suggest that you find a store and grab a Dtac sim card . I have done this at the airport, 7-11’s, malls, and local shops. They all helped me insert my SIM card and set it up.

  • Click here to find the e-sim from Airalo.com that works for your trip to Krabi!

What to Pack for Krabi

  • Lightweight Clothing : The weather in Krabi is generally hot and humid, so lightweight, breathable clothing is a must. This includes shorts, t-shirts, and lightweight dresses.
  • Swimwear : You’ll likely spend a lot of time at the beach, so don’t forget your swimwear! I usually pack at least 3 bathing suits.
  • Sun Protection : Bring a hat, sunglasses, and a high-SPF sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Finding sunscreen there may be a bit cheaper, but you never know!
  • Comfortable Footwear : If you plan on hiking or a lot of walking, bring comfortable shoes. Flip flops or sandals are also a must for the beach.
  • Rain Jacket/Poncho : If you’re visiting during the rainy season, it’s a good idea to bring a lightweight rain jacket or poncho.
  • Mosquito Repellent : To protect against mosquito bites, especially at night.
  • Travel Adapter : Thailand uses type A, B, C, and O plugs, so you will need an adapter.
  • Beach Towel : Some hotels provide these, but not all do, so it’s a good idea to pack one just in case. I really like the lightweight ones that roll up very small.
  • Toiletries : Including travel-sized shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, and any other personal hygiene items you may need. I like buying my stuff once I get to Thailand, its cheap and you don’t have to worry about bringing it along with you.

Where is Krabi in Thailand?

Krabi is located in Southern Thailand on the western side of the country. It has an airport and port making it an easy location to get to on your trip through Thailand. I easily got here from Chiang Mai on an easy 2-hour domestic flight. The flight from Bangkok to Krabi is even shorter coming in around 1 hour and 20 minutes.

It is right on the Andaman Sea and is a perfect location for island hopping, and soaking in the sun on the beaches , and has plenty of amazing restaurants to choose from. Krabi is close to the popular island of Phuket but is quieter and more relaxing.

How Many Days Do You Need in Krabi Thailand?

Is Krabi worth Visiting?

drone photo of Krabi thailand

es! Krabi is by far one of the best places to visit in Thailand. There are cultural experiences, a fun nightlife scene, and plenty of places to escape the city life on the beach. It is more relaxed than some of the islands in Thailand and very affordable.

Do not hesitate to book your trip to Krabi and you will love it just as much as I did. A few more of my favorite places in Thailand or the Koh Samui beaches, and Chiang Mai is my favorite for the community.

Is Krabi or Phuket Nicer?

abbey sitting in a tree on the beach in krabi thailand

Both Krabi and Phuket are nice and offer beautiful beaches and attractions. Phuket is larger, more developed, and offers a vibrant nightlife, making it popular with partygoers. Krabi, on the other hand, is quieter and less crowded, offering a more relaxed atmosphere and stunning natural beauty. Your choice depends on your personal preference for either a lively or tranquil beach holiday.

Is Krabi Worth Going to?

Yes! Absolutely, Krabi is worth going to. Krabi has stunning landscapes, beautiful beaches, clear waters for snorkeling and diving, and a very relaxed atmosphere. Additionally, it’s close to famous Thai islands like Phi Phi and James Bond Island.

How to get to Krabi

Krabi is 170 kilometres away from Phuket and 800 kilometres south of Bangkok. There are many ways to get to Krabi from these Thai cities. It’s up to you to decide between air, road or sea based on your budget, comfort requirements, and time constraints.

Krabi has a small airport with flights from only four other countries: Malaysia, Singapore, China and Qatar. There are also domestic flights to and from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Koh Samui.

Although flying is one of the most convenient options, flights here tend to be on the more expensive side. If you do decide to catch a flight from Bangkok to Krabi, remember that Bangkok has two different airports. If you’re arriving at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), make sure you’re not departing from Don Mueang (DMK) and vice versa.

A much more popular airport to fly into is Phuket (HKT). As it is a larger airport, it is served by a wider range of international airlines with regular flights. The journey from Phuket to Krabi will take you about two to four hours by land, depending on your transport of choice.

Minibuses and government buses, for example, are very affordable but take longer. If you’re not in any rush, you’ll save a ton of money and won’t have to worry about booking in advance as they run so frequently. If you decide on a private transfer or taxi, you’ll arrive at your accommodation directly but pay a whole lot more.

During high season, there are daily ferries and speedboats that cross the Phang Nga Bay between Phuket and Krabi. Though this is the shortest route, you’ll still need to factor in travel time to and from either piers.

Aside from flying, you can also catch a train or bus from Bangkok. Be prepared for a lengthy trip, as the full air-conditioned bus journey will take 12 hours.

While there is no train station in Krabi, you can depart from Hua Lamphong Station and go to Surat Thani, then catch a bus for the remainder of the distance. You’ll be able to book first-class, 12-hour sleeper trains or daytime trains that take eight hours.

What to expect in Krabi

Before visiting Thailand for the first time, you may worry about how you’re going to communicate. As Krabi is a top tourist destination, many locals working in the service and hospitality industries can speak basic English. If you can, it’s a nice gesture to at least learn hello and thank you in Thai.

You’ll use the currency Thai baht, which comes in both coins and banknotes. Most places only accept cash, though you can often use credit cards at more upscale restaurants.

You should always have enough cash on you for the day. Tipping is not required or expected here.

How to get around Krabi

Krabi has numerous transport options. A popular method to get yourself around is to rent a scooter. If you’re in town for a week, you can find discounted rates. Remember that people drive on the left side of the road in Thailand. Always be safe and responsible while driving a scooter, and wear a helmet!

If you’re hesitant about your driving skills, stick to taxis. Download the Grab app so you can book affordable rides whenever you need. Grab is the equivalent of Uber, which no longer operates in Southeast Asia as of this year. There are always promotions going on to give you a further discount on your rides.

You’ll become familiar with ferries and speedboats as a way to get between islands in Krabi. These are several daily services to Phuket, Koh Lanta and Phi Phi. Inexpensive boat taxis also run along the coast and are a scenic way to get between Ao Nang, Ton Sai, Railay, Phra Nang and Krabi Town.

The best time to visit Krabi

Although Krabi experiences warm weather year-round, you’ll want to avoid the summer monsoon season. The wettest months are August to October, so a trip during these months may ruin your plans for sun baking on the beach.

The perfect time to visit is from January to March. You’ll miss the tourist rush from Christmas and New Year’s Eve, as well as the Northern Hemisphere summer vacation crowd.

Not only that, but the conditions are near perfect, with very little rain and warm but mild temperatures.

Things to do in Krabi

Wondering what else there is to do other than lay at the beach all day? Here are some ideas for fun things to do in Krabi.

Shop at the Night Markets

One of the most lively things to do in Krabi at night is to head to Walking Street (known as Thanon Khon Dern in Thai).

A night market is held on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from six o’clock. You’ll find a wide variety of items for sale, from handmade oyster pearl jewellery to classic souvenirs and T-shirts.

Of course, there will also be a ton of delicious street food vendors. There are always plastic chairs and tables to sit down at, so there’s no need to be in a rush.

When you’ve wandered long enough, enjoy a drink and watch a Thai musical performance at the central stage.

Soak in the Hot Springs

Less than an hour away from Krabi Town is the district of Klong Thom. There are a few hot springs in the area that are as beautiful as they are therapeutic.

Krabi Hot Springs is a serene spot under the shade of the tropical rainforest. It gets quite busy in the afternoons, so try to get there as early as possible. Many locals also enjoy going to Saline Hot Spring, the smaller of the two main areas.

Swim at the Emerald Pool

Close by the Krabi Hot Springs in the Thung Teao Forest Natural Park is the magnificent Emerald Pool . Photos simply cannot do the crystal-clear water justice.

You’ll need to walk over a kilometre to reach the stunning mineral pool, but it’s absolutely worth the trek. Again, come as early as you can to beat the crowds and have the most peaceful experience.

Places to visit in Krabi

Tiger cave temple.

This Buddhist temple is only 10 kilometres northeast of Krabi Town. The strenuous 1,237 steps to reach the summit may turn some people away, but the view of nearby Krabi is beautifully rewarding.

A large, golden Buddha statue will greet you once you make it to the top. Wat Tham Suea, as it’s known in Thai, was named for the tiger paw prints once found in the cave.

Railay Beach

Railay is one of Krabi’s most iconic beach areas and only accessible by boat from Ao Nang. Fortunately, the boats depart hourly and take only 15 minutes.

The limestone cliffs attract rock climbers, and the serene beaches draw in anyone looking for a relaxing, sunny atmosphere. With a jungle right by the sand, be on the lookout for many playful yet sneaky monkeys.

Phra Nang Beach

Further down from Railay Beach is the gorgeous Phra Nang. More limestone cliffs and caves create a picturesque backdrop during your swim.

It’s a wonderful place to rent a kayak and go snorkelling. If you’d like to go scuba diving, there are nearby centres where you can book an instructor.

What to eat in Krabi

Thailand is a haven for foodies , and Krabi is no exception. You’ll have no trouble finding great restaurants and vendors that serve fresh fruit, spicy curries and grilled meats. Many of the street food dishes cost only 30 to 60 baht, so with such affordable prices, why not eat as much as you want?

Here are three foods you must sample while in Krabi:

Pad Thai: Of course, this classic Thai dish had to be mentioned! There’s no need to overpay at fancy restaurants, as the most delicious pad Thai can be found at street vendors. There are varieties for everyone, including shrimp, chicken and vegetarian.

Som tam : After eating your weight in fried noodles, a light, fresh meal may be just what you need. This savoury green papaya salad is a local favourite and is available everywhere. Although it’s served cold, it has a spicy kick to it.

Mango sticky rice: One of Thailand’s most popular traditional desserts is just what the name suggests. It’s a deliciously sweet yet healthy post-dinner treat that you’ll never get sick of.

Where to stay in Krabi

While you may want to stay on many of Krabi’s gorgeous islands too, we’ve picked out some of the best hotels and hostels on the mainland for you. Here are a few recommendations to help you narrow down where to stay in Krabi.

Bliss Resort is a welcoming accommodation that’s right along the tranquil Klong Muang Beach. You’ll have access to the hotel’s private beach area, mere steps from your door.

The rooms are industrial and modern but incorporate warm and cosy decor. If you want to stay somewhere peaceful but not too far from Krabi Town, this resort will be perfect for you.

Whether you’re travelling solo or with friends, Pak-Up Hostel is the best budget-friendly accommodation in Krabi Town. It’s on the corner of the busy Thanon Utarakit road, a prime location to begin exploring and meeting fellow travellers.

Their bar area has great music, a pool table, and a free barbecue every night. Although there’s such a lively social scene, all dorms and double rooms at Pak-Up are incredibly clean.

If a garden oasis retreat is more your style, you’ll fall in love with Phanom Bencha Mountain Resort . This resort is a special and harmonious place, located 20 kilometres north of Krabi Town at the foothills of a national park.

The standard and two-bedroom bungalows are surrounded by fruit trees and tropical fauna. A stay here gives you the opportunity to go on a nighttime rainforest trek to see the different forms of wildlife.

Tours to do in Krabi

With so many island hopping tours available, how is anyone to choose between them all? Here’s a rundown of some of the best-rated island tours to help you pick the one that’s right for you.

A six-hour sunset cruise allows you to explore five islands along the coast of Krabi. You’ll have snorkelling gear and stand-up paddle boards provided, with plenty of opportunities to have a relaxing swim.

The cruise also has a cocktail bar on board and offers a Thai buffet for dinner (including vegetarian options). With all of this included and more, you’re guaranteed an enjoyable day.

Day trips from Krabi

While the Phi Phi Islands are technically part of Krabi Province, a 90-minute ferry ride is required to get there. Therefore, you should dedicate an entire day to exploring this beautiful island group.

If you’re not sure which spots to visit, you might like to opt for an early-bird speedboat tour run by Sea Eagle. Leave at sunrise, be taken to several of Phi Phi’s most impressive islands, and enjoy lunch at a cliff-side restaurant.

This excursion lasts all day and you’ll be dropped back off in Krabi by the late afternoon.

It’s my first ever e-book, and I want to share it with you!

Everyone hates spammy emails, so do I.  Rest assured, I will never spam your inbox!

Surrounded by towering limestone islands floating on the crystal clear water, there are no better places in Thailand to enjoy an island-hopping tour. If you’re planning a trip to Krabi, you’re in the right place! In this article, we’ll have a look at how the 7 Islands Sunset Tour is like, how you can book the tour, what to bring, and of course, how much it costs.

Standing on the top of all island-hopping tours in Krabi would be the Krabi 4 Islands Tour, which is currently operated by countless operators. The Krabi 7 Islands Tour might not sound familiar to you, but I assure you that the experience is very similar at the same price range – if not better!

Before we get started, let me give you a quick picture. For this tour, you’ll be traveling in a longtail boat and enjoy sunbathing, snorkeling (and night snorkeling to see the bioluminescent plankton!), walking between islands through the shallow waters, stunning sunset view over the horizon and most exciting of all – buffet dinner!

Excited yet? Let’s dive in and check out the details of this 7 Islands sunset tour in Krabi!

Krabi 7 Islands Tour Price?

To be honest, when it comes to pricing, Thailand really had me all confusing. Why?

On our first day in Krabi, our hostel manager in Baan To Guesthouse handed us several brochures. This tour particularly caught our attention and the written price was 1,500 Baht. We asked the manager for more details, and she said she could make it 900 Baht if we booked with her.

Like, 40% discount, seriously?

In the end, we booked our 7 Islands Tour for 900 Baht per person .

My advice is to first consult with your hostel or hotel manager and see if they could offer a better price. If so, why not book with them? Saves you the trouble because the tuk-tuk picks you up right at the doorstep.

My take is that the price might differ depending on the seasons though. I visited in January which is not so much of a peak season.

Note that you still have to pay 10 Baht for the pier fee , which is pretty ridiculous. But it’s 10 Baht so nevermind.

So, in total, I spent 910 Baht for the 7 Islands Sunset Tour.

Tup Island and Thap Island

The pickup service will drop you right at the pier area, where you’ll be directed to collect your snorkeling masks and register your names. Pier fee of 10 Baht will be collected upon entering the pier. After that, just wait until your group is called to board the longtail boat.

The process is pretty straightforward so I think there’s no point explaining too much, let’s jump into the main points.

The first island, well, islands to be exact are Tup Island (or Koh Tup) and Thap Island (or Koh Thap). It takes around 30 minutes to get here from Krabi Ao Nam Mao Pier.

Now, some articles will say they are the same islands, but no. Both of these islands are connected by the sandy beach covered by a shallow layer of seawater.

That means you’ll be able to stroll back and forth these 2 islands like a boss, sounds pretty cool, right?

So, what the main activities in these two islands? Well, we were given around 45 minutes to simply walking around and explore.

The seawater in the surrounding is crystal clear, and there were plenty of fishes there. You could bring your snorkeling mask, dive in, and try talking to the fishes. In short, there are no specific activities here other than free time.

Chicken Island

It’s time for some snorkeling!

If it’s your first time snorkeling, you might want to check out some video tutorials in YouTube to get an idea first. If not, you might end up like an awkward fish that forgot how to breathe.

Trust me, I was that fish.

Snorkeling seems so easy at first that I didn’t bother to try learning it. In my first attempt, I choked on some seawater and the taste remained in my mouth for hours. The video below shows you how to get started.

The sea around Chicken Island is around 3 to 4 meters deep. The operator told us that we were supposed to snorkel somewhere else but the sea condition there wasn’t so pleasant. Or something like that, she was talking when the boat engine beside me is running on full power.

Anyway, don’t expect too much coral reef there, as tourism always kills the sensitive coral reefs. And one thing, use coral-safe sunscreens, please.

At Chicken Island, you’ll be given around 30 minutes to snorkel around the massive limestone hill. There were no beaches around that you can land on, so you either get on the boat or you go swimming with the fishes.

Oh ya, there weren’t many fishes here when I dove until the operator took out some fish-bait-thing and the fishes swarmed in like zombies. I’m not that supportive when it comes to wildlife tourism, but I’m ok with it if it’s just for a brief while.

I didn’t even know why it’s called Chicken Island. It looks more like Lapras Island. (Only Pokemon fans can relate)

Approaching Chicken Island on Longtail Boat

Poda Island and Ma Tang Ming Island

Next stop, Poda Island. This island is the perfect spot to chill and relax after the struggling snorkel. We were given an hour in this island to do whatever we like – free time.

Ma Tang Ming Island, located at the opposite of Poda Island is a perfect subject for photography. Unfortunately, there were no beaches on that island so all we could do was admire its beauty from a distance.

Speak of Poda Island, this island is HUGE. The long stretch of white sandy beach is great for simply picnicking and sunbathing. While you’re there, why not dip yourself into the sea and enjoy the crystal clear water?

There are plenty of coconut trees as well to keep the benches shady – you’ll definitely feel sleepy after all the snorkeling and swimming.

Anyway, one hour passed really quickly and we had to move on to the next destination.

Ko Ma Tang Ming in 7 Islands Sunset Tour Krabi

Located not so far away from Krabi lies Samet Nangshe Viewpoint, one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in Thailand. Check it out here !

Si Island & Railay Beach with Phra Nang Cave

While Si Island is advertised as one of the 7 islands in the tour, like Ko Ma Tang Ming, we did not set foot onto this island. There was no beach there, and it’s really close to Railay Beach on the Krabi mainland.

The longtail boat parked at the beach of this last destination of the 7 Island Sunset Tour and visitors got to enjoy the perfect sunset view over the horizon accompanied by the enormous Si Island.

The moment you hopped off the boat, the first thing you want to do is pay a quick visit to Phra Nang Cave – probably the most famous cave in Krabi.

This hundred-meter-tall cave is magnificent by itself, due to the erosion of the limestone hill, which contributed to the unique pattern of the cave structure. The giant stalactites hanging over the cave ceiling will surely make you wonder if they’ll drop at any moment. Don’t even imagine it!

After the sunset, before the sunset glow disappears, make sure you bring yourself to the booth of your travel operator to claim your buffet dinner! Enjoying your dinner while admiring the beauty of the purple sky, what’s a better way to end the day?

Phra Nang Cave in Railay Beach in Krabi Mainland

The Unknown Island

The tour is not over after the dinner just yet! After dinner, hop on back to your longtail boat and you’ll be brought to an unknown island. The island’s name wasn’t mentioned in any of the brochures so I wasn’t sure about the name.

Several longtail boats came together and turned off the light. In 5 minutes, your eyes start to adapt to the darkness and become more sensitive to light. And you guessed it, it’s night snorkeling time!

Night snorkeling might sound a little creepy for some, so make sure you wear the safety jackets if you’re not confident about the safety! Your operator will teach you how to see the bioluminescent plankton.

It’s simple, once you’re in the water, simply flap your hand, or make any motions with your hands. The planktons will let out lights when there is movement around them. Some sort of chemical reactions, according to the operator.

If you don’t feel like snorkeling again, the operator will contain the seawater into a plastic bottle and shake them on the boat, making them shine bright like diamonds. But the experience is very different compared to seeing them yourself in the waters.

Oh ya, the luminescence only lasts for around 0.5 seconds when there are movements. Pretty difficult to take photos, I’d say.

With your wet clothes, it’s time to head back to the pier and end the tour!

Fire Show at Ao Nam Mao Pier

I’m not sure if this applies to all tour operators, but our tour operator, The Lucky Krabi Travel had this fire show thing in their itinerary.

After returning the snorkeling masks, we got to enjoy a 10-minutes fire show before we hopped on our tuk-tuk and dropped off at our hostel. The fire show was conducted by a family of 3 generations, with the youngest being… I think he’s younger than 10 years old.

Anyway, the fire show was pretty impressive. There were some pretty dangerous tricks, but there was no fire breathing trick. Yep, I know it’s very dangerous to the performer, but I’ve never seen it with my own eyes to this day, so…

Excited for this 7 Islands Sunset Tour in Krabi?

So that’s it for the Krabi 7 Islands Sunset Tour. What do you think of it? I highly recommend you to try this or at least the 4 Islands tour. A trip to Krabi without an island-hopping tour is not complete! The seawater condition might disgust you especially at the Krabi Town area, but trust me, once you get the 30-minutes boat ride out of town, things will get so aesthetically different. Let me know if this article helped you. Travel safe and enjoy Thailand!

Gem- and jewelry-themed tours and excursions mix treasure hunting with adventure and cultural experiences.

Text by Amy Elliott

Last year, when Roberto Ruiz visited the Carbonera mine in Querétaro, Mexico, he cracked open a grapefruit-size piece of rhyolite with a hammer. When he looked inside, “it was like finding a fire fossil,” he said during a recent phone interview from his home in San Antonio. Inside was an orangey-red fire opal that he likened to a flame, forever preserved in the sphere of igneous rock.

Mr. Ruiz and his wife, Erika Rodriguez, are among the few people who have traveled to the mine, a desolate spot located in Carbonera in central Mexico, a destination that’s well off the beaten tourist track, some 20 miles from the nearest city. Their journey was especially unusual as neither is in the gem trade: Mr. Ruiz is a corporate attorney and Ms. Rodriguez works in digital marketing.

But they are among a growing number of travel enthusiasts seeking unusual, hyper-specific vacation experiences that offer an insider’s view of the gem and fine jewelry industries, and a number of businesses are responding to the demand accordingly.

Mr. Ruiz said the idea of visiting an opal mine was appealing for a few reasons, starting with his lifelong fascination with gemstones and minerals.

The mine’s remote location in the rocky, semidesert wilderness (where snakes and scorpions are not uncommon) was also compelling: Ms. Rodriguez said she and her husband are usually inclined toward travel focused on outdoor adventure, from hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru to rock climbing around Krabi in southern Thailand.

“We had also gone to the American Museum of Natural History in New York and saw an opal from Querétaro, and Roberto is originally from there,” Ms. Rodriguez said. “We found out something that we didn’t even know existed and we became interested in learning how the opals are extracted — and meeting the people who were doing it.”

But a traveler cannot just show up at a mine and start digging. It requires a guide, someone well connected to the mine owners and well versed in what to expect: dirt and dust; lots of walking; the occasional explosion at the site; and, at times, security risks. Given their knowledge of the terrain, guides keep an ear to the ground for rumblings — both geological and political — and respond accordingly to keep travelers safe.

The couple arranged the trip through Carlos Torres, an acquaintance from New York who is a gemologist, commercial gem buyer and consultant. He had piqued their interest with tales of the mines he has visited, particularly on trips with his business partner, Laurent Massi, who has taught gemology at several institutions and now is the owner of the Neogem consultancy in Paris.

Mr. Torres and Dr. Massi have organized gem mining trips not just to Mexico, but also to destinations such as Colombia (for emeralds), Thailand (for rubies) and Brazil (for Paraiba tourmaline). Last fall, they started the Gem Odyssey , a business to structure similar gem-hunting expeditions as all-inclusive travel packages that start, on average, at about $3,700 per person, not including airfare.

Gem Odyssey itineraries are tailored to jewelry enthusiasts who are not industry professionals — offering plenty of education and explanation, while avoiding “inside baseball”-type industry talk. The trips typically span nine days, with at least three of those days spent at a mine site.

The founders say the schedules can be customized to include experiences such as tequila tastings or visits to local artisan markets; any given trip might include a mix of accommodations, with upscale hotels near the airports or central cities and more rustic facilities in the mining areas.

But his clients don’t come for the niceties, Mr. Torres said. “They like the idea of getting mud on their hands.”

And, he added, after receiving instruction in mining safety, they become part of the process: “They see the drilling, how the dynamite is used for extraction, and they get to experience breaking the stones and checking for gems.”

Dr. Massi, who also was on the phone interview with Mr. Torres, said that “witnessing the birth of a gemstone is not something anyone can do and see at home in their garden. We try to give them an experience, and see a part of a country, that they could not get access to on their own.”

Digging For Tourmalines

Perhaps it is not surprising, but gem- and jewelry-themed travel is a trend especially relevant to the tastes and inclinations of high-net worth individuals — people with at least $1 million in liquid assets — according to Milton Pedraza, the founder and chief executive of the Luxury Institute, a consultancy specializing in luxury consumer research with offices in New York and Florida.

Mr. Pedraza said the sophisticated traveler has “seen it, done it.” So, he said, when someone has the opportunity to access an exclusive experience in a far-flung part of the world, “it makes your life more unique,” he said,“and everybody wants to be seen as authentic, unique and genuine.”

The designer Pamela Hastry is connected to such clients through Morphée , her jewelry company in Paris, and the lectures that she regularly hosts in and around her hometown, Brussels. She also conducts private tours of Place Vendôme in Paris, a center for high jewelry, and of the Diamantkwartier, or Diamond Quarter, in Antwerp, Belgium, one of the jewelry industry’s oldest and most prominent diamond centers.

In November Ms. Hastry is planning to take a group to Namibia, in southern Africa, to discover the country’s beautiful tourmalines (while also making a stop at a mine that produces chrysocolla, an unusual blue-green type of chalcedony). Organized with Destination, a luxury travel agency in Belgium, the 10-day itinerary includes at least one night in a tent near one of the tourmaline mines (€8,986 or about $9,711, without airfare).

“You’re going to live — and dig — like a miner for a day and a half,” Ms. Hastry said.

Damien Van Bellinghen, the founder of Le Club des Etoiles, a business and social club in Brussels, has one of the 15 reservations for the Namibia trip. Mr. Van Bellinghen, who went on one of Ms. Hastry’s private tours of Antwerp’s diamond district, wrote in an email that he looked forward to discovering how gems are extracted, getting to know the miners and exploring the country through the lens of a jeweler.

“The types of trips that Pamela Hastry organizes plunge straight into the heart of where the most marvelous jewels come from,” he wrote. “Such visits can only be made if you are accompanied by someone who has ‘insider’ knowledge and, above all, who has the trust of the local people. And we’re lucky enough to enjoy it.”

The Royal Treatment

If you do find a gem during one of these mine trips, can it be used in a piece of jewelry? Both Ms. Hastry and Mr. Torres of the Gem Odyssey said that they could facilitate a purchase, although they noted that the item purchased would have to comply with international import/export regulations.

But some gem-loving travelers don’t want to dig for their treasures. They would rather a holiday centered on history, sightseeing and shopping for finished pieces of jewelry (with posh accommodations and amenities as a bonus).

“You can tour some cities very easily through the lens of the history of fine jewelry and jewelry-making,” said Camilla Davidson, who is head of destination management for Britain, France and Ireland at Red Savannah , a luxury travel agency in England. “And that would still enable you to see so many of the destination’s highlights.”

For example, the agency offers a tour of London called Couture and Crown Jewels, an extravagant option for jewelry enthusiasts with deep pockets ($550,000 for two people, without airfare). It offers a private tour of the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London and dinner in its White Tower; a four-night stay at the Raffles London at the OWO; and tickets to a West End show. And it includes a $125,000 credit toward a jewelry purchase at Humphrey Butler, an antique and estate jeweler.

Ms. Davidson said she developed the package in response to the world’s fascination with British royalty and was inspired by the idea of connecting a visit to the Crown Jewels to an exclusive jewelry shopping experience.

Humphrey Butler and his namesake business were a natural fit for the itinerary, she said: “He has the most impeccable collection and he as an individual is completely charming, exceptionally discreet, and just great fun to be around.”

Jewels at Sea

For some jewelry collectors, a travel experience that plays to, or enhances, their level of connoisseurship, is most appealing.

“Whatever their interest is, they want to learn more,” said Mr. Pedraza, the luxury consumer specialist. “So they make an adventure or journey out of it.”

One such example might be the Spotlight on Fabergé package offered by Regent Seven Seas Cruises in collaboration with Fabergé, the Russian heritage workshop known for its bejeweled eggs, which in 2009 moved its headquarters in London.

The first such excursion aboard the Seven Seas Grandeur liner is scheduled for July. Josina von dem Bussche-Kessell, Fabergé’s creative director, explained that the cruise is designed for “clients who care about art and culture and would happily sit for an hour or so to learn about the history of Fabergé’s royal clients then and now.”

The Grandeur, which was launched in November, has its own 1,600-piece art collection, including a Fabergé egg in an ocean theme with blue guilloché enamel, diamonds and pearls, called “Journey in Jewels,” which was commissioned by Regent Seven Seas. (The meetings on the commission actually led to the cruise collaboration.)

The 11-day voyage is scheduled to depart from the Civitavecchia port in Rome and to include destinations such as the Sicilian city of Taormina; Ibiza, Spain; and Nice, France, ending in Monaco (from $12,999 per person, including airfare).

The programming is to include Fabergé expert-led lectures, screenings and master classes, as well as shore excursions attuned to the participants’ interests in the decorative arts. As Ms. von dem Bussche-Kessell sees it, such a floating symposium — a kind of sleepover camp on a luxury scale — effectively creates a community for people who share a common passion.

Mr. Pedraza said that was an important incentive for certain travelers: “They love to engage with the product while meeting people who are their peers and who come through trusted brands and curators.”

And the return home is just as important as the journey itself, especially with a glittering souvenir to show friends and family.

“You get to demonstrate your expertise,” Mr. Pedraza said, “The experience has made you an insider.”

UConn's Dan Hurley 'spiraled' amid travel chaos but 'lucky to be here'

GLENDALE, Arizona -- After having some time -- and a couple hours of sleep -- to reflect on UConn 's travel issues, coach Dan Hurley said Thursday that the Huskies are "past it" and "lucky to be here."

UConn didn't arrive in Phoenix until 3:15 a.m. local time Thursday -- hours after it was originally expected to land -- after mechanical issues and flight delays.

"It was nice," Hurley joked Thursday. "A lot of thoughts because I've had a lot of time to think in just a stationary situation. I think what goes through your mind once you're done kind of complaining and cursing and muttering, you just start saying to yourself, 'You don't deserve to show such entitlement. Such an honor to get a chance -- once-in-a-lifetime experience -- to play in a Final Four, coach in a Final Four.' Once that edge wore off, [it was, 'We're] lucky to be here.' We're lucky to get an opportunity to come play in the Final Four.

"Who doesn't deal with problems with the airlines? ... But it sucked."

The flight was originally scheduled to take off from Bradley International Airport at about 6 p.m. Wednesday, but it was delayed to 11:30 p.m. because of mechanical issues. Hurley posted on X around 1 a.m. ET that the plane had not yet taken off.

The NCAA announced around 3:25 a.m. local time that UConn had safely landed, saying the additional delay was due to weather in Connecticut.

"I ruminated a lot. I spiraled. I had my head in my hands a lot," Hurley said. "It was a real mindful exercise from 11:30 to like 1:45 on the tarmac. It was therapeutic to watch the de-icing on the window."

Hurley said they adjusted their schedule upon arrival. The players slept in later than usual and studied film at the hotel, but they made it to State Farm Stadium to shoot to get used to the bigger setting.

"I mean, listen, these guys were getting in a van driving 14 hours to the Peach Jam, playing two hours later," Hurley said, referencing Nike's signature grassroots basketball event. "There's no excuses. I mean, s---, I was driving a mini cheese bus to prep school games not too long ago. We're in the Final Four here man, with a chance to advance, to repeat as national champions, make history. We're way past that s---."

UConn faces Alabama on Saturday in the second of two national semifinal contests. The Huskies are aiming to become the first back-to-back national champions since the Florida Gators in 2006 and 2007.

As for his own rest and recovery, Hurley said he slept two hours on the plane and two hours at the hotel.

"That's why God made caffeine."

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

Dan Hurley appreciative despite UConn’s travel woes before Final Four: ‘Lucky to be here’

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - MARCH 27: Head coach Dan Hurley of the Connecticut Huskies answers questions during a press conference ahead of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Sweet 16 round at TD Garden on March 27, 2024 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images)

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Shortly after noon on Thursday, or roughly nine hours after his feet touched ground in the desert, Dan Hurley bounced toward the Connecticut locker room. Hat backwards. AirPods in place. Sleep-deprived and right on time for Final Four obligations.

“I’m heeeeeeeeeeeere,” Hurley declared to a familiar face as he passed by.

This was not the first update on the Huskies’ whereabouts Thursday, though it was probably the least convoluted.

A charter aircraft that never arrived from Kansas City. A replacement with mechanical issues. Inclement weather and a prolonged de-icing procedure. Lots of incremental online updates, wheels up six hours later than expected and an NCAA statement emailed out at 3:27 a.m.: UConn MBB Has Arrived In Phoenix.

Plane annoying, in other words.

“Who doesn’t deal with problems with the airlines?” Hurley said with a smile during his Thursday news conference. “It’s something you gotta get through. But it sucked.”

To recap: Mechanical issues grounded UConn ’s original charter flight to Arizona. Then inclement weather compounded another mechanical issue on the replacement aircraft, creating another two-hour delay getting out of Bradley International Airport in Connecticut. Wheels up time went from an originally planned 7:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. The Huskies eventually landed at 3:12 a.m. local time.

UConn's flight to Final Four delayed due to issues

“An unfortunate set of circumstances,” is how the NCAA’s early Thursday morning statement put it.

Asked how he passed the time, Hurley went full deadpan. “I ruminated,” the Huskies coach said. “A lot. I spiraled. I had my head in my hand a lot. … It was a real mindful exercise from 11:30 to like 1:45 on the tarmac. It was therapeutic to watch the de-icing. That was probably the best part of it.”

Understandably, the media schedule for the players was shuffled to accommodate recovery from the delays, with an open locker room session canceled on Thursday. Beyond that? Hurley said he made do with two hours of sleep on the plane and two at the hotel.

“That’s why God made caffeine,” he said, but only backed off a bit on his team’s preparation.

“We pushed things back a little bit, maybe like an hour and 15 (minutes),” Hurley said. “The guys were able to sleep in a little bit. We did our same routine. We did our video at the hotel. We knew we only had an hour and a half on the court, so it was important to take advantage of shooting, get a little bit of live play so we could get adjusted to a much, much bigger setting. We obviously took a little bit off the practice plan. Just make sure that we do a little bit less tonight, let these guys get their rest.

“I mean, listen, these guys were getting in a van driving 14 hours to the Peach Jam, playing two hours later. There’s no excuses. … We’re in the Final Four here, man, with a chance to advance, to repeat as national champions, make history. We’re way past that s—.”

Hurley otherwise struck an appreciative tone. He opened his remarks Thursday by thanking the welcoming committee for staying up until UConn showed up.

“What goes through your mind, once you’re done complaining and cursing and muttering, you start saying to yourself, you don’t really show entitlement,” Hurley said. “It’s such an honor and once in lifetime experience to play in a Final Four, coach in a Final Four, once that edge started to wear off — (we’re) lucky to be here.”
