Summarize this article for a 10 year old

The Up All Night Tour [1] was the first headlining concert tour by English-Irish boy band One Direction , in support of their debut studio album, Up All Night (2011). It began in December 2011 and was One Direction's first solo tour after being formed in the seventh series of The X Factor and being signed to Syco Records . The concert tour was announced in September 2011, with the initial dates for UK and Ireland being revealed. The tour eventually expanded to Oceania and North America, with the band playing 54 shows in total.

The setlist encompassed songs from One Direction's debut album and five covers. Critics commended One Direction's singing abilities and stage presence, and the production of the show. The tour was commercially successful, and a recording of the concert at the Bournemouth International Centre was made for Up All Night: The Live Tour , which was released on DVD in May 2012. Six years ago today, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik hit the road as the combined pop powerhouse we know as One Direction. Long before their solo albums and film projects, the five singers were reaching a milestone in their careers, set to play packed arenas, together, to a rapidly increasing fanbase. The Up All Night Tour marked the first headlining concert for the London based super stars.

The tour spanned over 60 dates, hitting Europe, Oceania and North America, was in support of their debut album, Up All Night . Kicking off in Watford, England on December 18, 2011, the 5-month tour concluded July 1, 2012 in Sunrise, Florida.

The kick-off show's setlist at The Colosseum in England was broken down into three sections, by summer, autumn, and winter. Though the pop stars included 13 original tracks from their debut album Up All Night , their set incorporated a handful of covers, from The Black Eyed Pea's "I Gotta Feeling," Gym Class Heroes' "Stereo Hearts," The Zutons' "Valerie," Ednaswap's "Torn," and "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon. The night was concluded with an encore of "I Want," from the group's debut release.

"I want, I want, I want, to be loved by you," is a repeated line throughout the track. An admission that wasn't a hard task for their passionate fans to oblige.

One of the headlining tour dates was captured on film and turned into a documentary. Up All Night: The Live Tour is a video album documenting One Direction's first big run. It was released in May of 2012. Only 3 months after the live documentary was released, Up All Night: The Live Tour had sold in excess of one million copies worldwide.

Up All Night Tour

One_Direction_North_American_promo_poster[1]

One Direction’s debut headline UK concert tour, the Up All Night Tour, was officially announced on 27 September 2011. Set for December 2011 and January 2012, the tour would showcase their then-upcoming debut album, and would commence on 18 December 2011 in Watford, England and end 26 January 2012 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. One Direction announced the solo tour shortly after releasing their first single, “What Makes You Beautiful”. Shows in the UK and Ireland were an instant success—many rumored to have sold out in under 10 seconds. Additional shows were added, including an expansion into Australia and New Zealand. In February 2012, One Direction announced the Oceania leg, the tour dates set for April 2012, scheduled to visit cities Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Auckland and Wellington. While promoting the tour, band member Liam Payne stated the group wanted this trek to be a “world tour”. To kick off the tour, the band performed a rehearsal show in Watford. Once the first leg of the tour was complete, the band joined Big Time Rush as the opening act on the Better With U Tour.

During a break from concerts, One Direction promoted their album in the United States. Following an appearance on The Today Show, Up All Night was released in the US and One Direction became the first ever UK group to have their debut album bow atop the Billboard 200. This led to the group extending the tour into North America. On 21 March 2012, One Direction announced the North American leg of the tour. The North American leg would start on 24 May 2012 and compromise out of 26 shows. Shortly after the announcement British recording artist Olly Murs was confirmed to be the opening act for select dates on tour.

The concerts in England and Ireland received mixed feedback from critics. Kitty Empire (The Observer) was not impressed with the show at Windsor Hall. Empire wrote, “It’s easy to sneer at boy bands, but always worth considering their appeal. It goes without saying that One Direction are slick, and often bland. With the exception of their persuasive No 1 single, “What Makes You Beautiful”, their songs aren’t wildly distinctive”. For the concert at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo in London, James Robertson (Daily Mirror) gave the band a positive review. He states, “The room shook with hair raising, ear drum piercing and (if there had been windows) glass-shattering screams. Each took a turn walking forward to embrace the cries from the sold-out Hammersmith Apollo while singing the lame-named Na, Na, Na. It was impossible to tell which one of the five boys had the biggest ovation but the loudest cheer came when Niall played acoustic guitar as they sang solo around an artificial camp fire”. Another glowing review was done by Alexandra Ryan (Evening Herald) for the concert at Dublin’s The O2. She says, “THEY came, they saw, they conquered. Dreams came true for thousands of Irish female fans as their pop idols One Direction took to the stage at the O2. Swarms of screaming girls flocked to the sold-out venue last night as Zayn, Harry, Louis, Liam and Mullingar teen Niall Horan performed for 14,000 fans”.

As the tour progressed to Oceania and North America, many commentators remarked on the band’s popularity and their singing abilities. For the concert at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion, Mike Wass (Idolator) felt One Direction’s “surprisingly accomplished effort” of Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” proved that One Direction are “more than capable” of evolving their sound. Cameron Adams (Herald Sun) wrote a positive review for the concert in Melbourne at the Hisense Arena. He assessed that One Direction represented a “cleverly cast pop band with plenty of personality unleashed at the perfect time and seizing their moment.” He opined that the covers performed showcased “strong pop voices.” Adams concluded as follows: “Who knows if they’ll progress beyond the usual boy band lifespan. But for now they’re making a lot of people very happy.” Reviewing the concert in Fairfax at the Patriot Center, Chris Richards (The Washington Post) elaborated on the concert synopsis. He wrote, “Over the course of umpteen songs, its members didn’t work the stage so much as loiter on it. They looked comfortable. No silly choreography, just a few ensemble fist-pumps. No ridiculous costumes, just letterman jackets, cardigans and khakis. A no-nonsense backing band — guitar, bass, keyboards and drums — provided steady renditions of nearly all of the songs on the group’s debut album, “Up All Night,” as well as a few covers, including Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” and Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn.”

Lars Brandle (Billboard) reviewed the concert at the BBEC Great Hall in Brisbane. Brandle predominantly noted the band’s popularity: “To say [1D] is the hottest boy-band on the scene, doesn’t quite grasp the situation. “On fire” is closer to the mark.” Brandle commended the show for being “all slick, clean fun”. Erica Futterman (Rolling Stone) wrote in a title for the concert at the Beacon Theatre in New York, “U.K. boy band relies on vocal prowess and charisma to keep fan base loyal.” Futterman highlighted their acoustic performances, which “showed off Horan’s ability to play guitar, as well as One Direction’s admirable live vocals”.Futterman concluded that there “was no need to worry about a backing track or a bum note, a pleasant realization at a pop show”. Jane Stevenson (Canoe.ca) maintained that the show at the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre in Toronto had “none of that choreographed dance move nonsense”, and complimented the “naturally, classy, low-key” production. Melody Lau (National Post) reviewed the same concert. Lau opined, “It’s easy to get lost in inherent appeal of their perfectly coiffed dos and almost-too-put-together preppy style but somewhere in the midst of all the love-struck squeals of teenage girls are guys who can actually sing and, to a certain extent, entertain.” Lau additionally noted One Direction’s lack of original material to perform, “the group falls back on a handful of covers to fill in their set, including Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody”, Gym Class Heroes’ “Stereo Hearts” and, surprisingly, Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn”. Not straying too far away from the originals, the mid-show medley definitely felt like the boys randomly belting out songs for the sake of filler but girls didn’t mind.”

When tickets for the shows in the UK and Ireland went on sale, many agencies reported sell-outs within minutes. News site Stuff.co.nz reported nearly 10,000 tickets were sold in 10 minutes for the band’s shows in Auckland and Wellington. The sellout success continued in Australia. There, the band’s shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane sold out in three minutes. Shows in the United States also sold out within minutes.

Don Juan Coffee Tour Monteverde Review – Is it Worth it?

This blog may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure policy for more info.

Costa Rica is not only a major producer of coffee, I think it also makes some of the best coffee in the world in terms of flavor. So much work goes into producing these top-quality beans that seeing it for yourself is one of the best things to do in Costa Rica !

Although Monteverde may be most famous for its cloud forest , there are lots of other amazing things to do here – including taking a tour of a coffee plantation. While there are a lot of coffee tours to choose from , when we were trying to narrow it down the Don Juan coffee tour in Monteverde kept coming up again and again. It’s a well-rated tour and offers a glimpse (and a taste!) at three major exports here: coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane.

The Don Juan coffee tour is one of the most well-known, but is it worth it? Well, we’ve done plenty of coffee tours all over Costa Rica while living here, and on our many visits to Monteverde, the Don Juan coffee tour is one of our most memorable, so keep on reading to find out how it measures up to the rest!

About the Don Juan Coffee Tour in Monteverde

Grinding Cacao Beans on the Don Juan Coffee Tour Monteverde

The Don Juan coffee tour  is a 2-hour tour of a working coffee plantation in Monteverde. It’s located about 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) outside of Santa Elena, which is the town where most tourists stay.

Although this is marketed as a coffee tour, the Don Juan plantation also produces chocolate and sugar cane. So don’t worry if you’re not a coffee drinker, because there’s plenty here for you to enjoy!

You’ll need to drive in a rental car or take a taxi to the coffee plantation, but it’s only a 10-minute drive. You can choose to start the tour at either 8 am, 10 am, 1 pm, or 3 pm, so it’s easy to fit into your Monteverde itinerary.

Once your tour starts, your guide will take you around the farm and teach you how the coffee, sugar cane, and cacao beans are grown and produced. These products are shipped all over the world, so it’s pretty cool to see where it all begins. It’s also a really interactive tour and you get to help your guide with demonstrations as you tour the farm.

And of course, you’ll also get to taste the coffee and chocolate that’s made right here on the plantation for a true bean-to-cup (or bean-to-bar) experience! I know it will come as no surprise that this was my favorite part!

And speaking of bean-to-bar, you actually get to make your own chocolate on this tour – how cool is that? So if you’ve always dreamed of being Willy Wonka in your own chocolate factory … this is it!

The farm itself is also really beautiful so it’s nice to get to walk around and explore. The trails are paved and you walk pretty slowly, so it’s not physically demanding. In fact, it’s a nice break if you’re sore from hiking, rafting , ziplining , and all of the other adventurous activities on offer in Monteverde .

The tour is really informative and it’s a lot of fun thanks to the amazing guides! We’ve done more coffee tours than we can count at this point, but this one didn’t feel repetitive and it really stood out from other experiences we’ve had on coffee plantations.

The tour costs $52 USD which includes your guide and all the tastings, but you’ll need to organize your own transport to and from the plantation.

Pros of the Don Juan Coffee Tour in Monteverde

A chocolate and coffee tour in Monteverde

Knowledgeable guide

As we mentioned, the guides on the Don Juan coffee tour are super knowledgeable and make the experience very engaging. They know so much about the history of coffee, the production process, and the significance of Costa Rica’s beans in the global market. We learned so much!

Affordable tour

At $52 USD per adult, this tour is one of the most affordable experiences on offer in Monteverde. It also compares pretty favorably to the prices of other coffee tours we’ve seen and done. We really think the price is worth it because the experience is so fun and engaging.

Learn about and make chocolate

One of our favorite things about this tour was that we got to make our own chocolate. We learned so much about chocolate while we were touring the farm which was super interesting, but getting to make our own bars was even better. You learn how to grind the beans and temper the chocolate to make sure that it sets properly, and then you can eat your creation afterward – yum!

Get to help press sugar cane

Another cool interactive experience on this tour is pressing sugar cane. Raw sugar cane is pressed in order to extract the juice. The juice can then be sieved, decanted, and processed to make sugar!

Sugar cane juice is also a popular drink in many countries, and you get to try it after you help your guide press it. And, fun fact, this juice is the main component of guaro, which is Costa Rica’s national alcoholic drink.

Cons of the Don Juan Coffee Tour in Monteverde

Making chocolate on a tour at Monteverde

Does not include transportation

Honestly, there is only one downside to the Don Juan coffee tour, and that’s that it does not include transportation. You need to get yourself to and from the plantation. It’s only a 10-minute drive from Santa Elena, which is where most people stay in the Monteverde region, so this is not a deal breaker.

You can easily drive yourself if you’ve rented a car in Costa Rica , or take a taxi from Santa Elena, which should cost $5-$10 USD each way. That’s not too bad if you’re in a group or traveling as a couple.

Do I recommend the Don Juan Coffee and Chocolate Tour in Monteverde?

A small coffee sprout grows in a pot for demonstration purposes in Monteverde, Costa Rica

Yes, I loved it!

We had such a great time on the Don Juan Coffee and Chocolate Tour . It was informative and fun throughout the entire experience. Our guides were absolutely captivating and they were great with kids. In fact, this experience is absolutely perfect for families because kids love getting to help with demonstrations and trying all of the sweet treats, even if they’re too young to like coffee!

This tour stands head and shoulders above the other coffee tour experiences we’ve had in Costa Rica. In fact, there’s only one other tour that could rival it, but that’s in a different part of the country! So while you’re here in Monteverde, don’t miss the chance to visit Don Juan.

Plus, when you  book online with Viator , you get free cancellation, so you can secure your spot without worrying about losing money if your plans change.

While enjoying some of the best coffee in the country is definitely a must-do, don’t forget to explore the rest of this area. There are so many fun activities in Monteverde , that you could spend your entire vacation here! These are just a few of our favorites:

  • Night walk – Tours of Monteverde Cloud Forest are awesome, but there are some animals you can only see at night! Guided Night Walks in Monteverde are a great way to (safely!) explore the jungle after dark. This night tour is a small group of up to 8 and you’ll have a naturalist guide to help you spot all the nocturnal creatures. It’s also super affordable at only $33 USD including round-trip transport.
  • Go ziplining – Ziplining is easily a top adventure activity in Monteverde. This ziplining tour has it all ! It’s three hours of fun including the Superman zipline, which is the longest and highest  zipline in Costa Rica  and all of Latin America!
  • Selvatura Park  – Selvatura Park is a nature and adventure park located inside a protected rainforest. This park has a network of  hanging bridges  above the tree canopy that give you incredible aerial views of the rainforest. Explore all the bridges and the surrounding trail with the  Selvatura Park Hanging Bridge Tour . This gives you two hours to enjoy the forest from unique viewpoints.
  • Go bungy jumping  – Bungy jumping is one of the fun Monteverde attractions you have to try … if you’re brave enough!  The Extreme Bungee Jumping in Monteverde Tour  has a daring jump from over 460 feet (140 meters). That’s the highest in Costa Rica and all of Central America!
  • Horseback riding  – This is a great way to give your feet a break and explore the Monteverde Cloud Forest!  This Monteverde Cloud Forest horseback riding tour  lets you cover a lot of ground as you trek through farmland and the surrounding landscape in Monteverde. Where to Stay in Monteverde, Costa Rica

The hot tub at Chira Glamping in Monteverde, Costa Rica

Monteverde may be a small tourist town but there are a surprisingly large amount of great hotels in all budget ranges.

Selina Monteverde – $

If you’re a budget traveler or backpacker, there are lots of nice hostels in Monteverde. If you like modern features and outstanding facilities,  Selina Monteverde  is the best option. The hostel is beautiful, has great reviews, and lots of activities including yoga.

The only downside is Selina is a high-end backpacker hostel. Prices begin at $97 USD for a one-night stay. You can book Selina  on Booking.com or here on Hostelworld .

Camino Verde B&B Monteverde – $$

For those well past their backpacking days who can spend a little more, I love  Camino Verde B&B Monteverde Costa Rica . This boutique hotel has beautiful rooms, a deck with magnificent views, and includes breakfast. It’s a comfortable hotel that comes at a great price.

Rates begin at $176 USD/night. You can check availability and book a room online here .

Chira Glamping Monteverde – $$$

If you’re a luxury traveler I highly suggest choosing what we call a “destination hotel”. These hotels are an attraction in themselves because of the unique experience they offer. In Monteverde one of the best is  Chira Glamping Monteverde which offers luxury camping with the option to have your own private hottub surrounded by nature.

The view from the property is incredible! Rates begin at $375 USD/night. You can check availability and reserve a room on Booking.com .

Getting Around Costa Rica

Bailey with our rental car near Rio Celeste Costa Rica

How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.

Renting a Car

Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.

One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.

Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.

Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.

You can  browse cars on Discover Cars here .

TPL Cover Costa Rica

Book Shuttles

If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.

Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)

To get the best price, use the website  Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!

You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.

Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!

The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!

It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.

It was really cool to see the whole process that goes into making the products and our guides were so amazing at explaining everything and making it fun too.

Tour of the Alps: Juan Pedro López takes solo victory, race lead on stage 3

Pellizzarri and Foss round out the podium in Schwaz

Juan Pedro López soloed to the stage win and race lead on stage 3 of the Tour of the Alps

How it unfolded

Juan Pedro López (Lidl-Trek) moved into the overall lead at the Tour of Alps after he soloed to victory in Schwaz on stage 3. On a gloomy day of rain and cold in Austria, the Spaniard produced a sparkling attack to claim his first professional win, while Tobias Foss (Ineos Grenadiers) surrendered his green jersey despite a fine display at the head of the chasing group behind in third place.

The winning move was sparked by Giulio Pellizzari (VF-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) near the top of the ascent of Pillberg with 27km remaining. López immediately jumped across to the Italian, and the pair struck up a solid working alliance on the rugged terrain that followed.

López and Pellizzari held a lead of more than 40 seconds after the penultimate climb of Weerberg, and they retained that advantage as they tackled Pillberg for the second and final time.

After Pellizzari withstood López’s first attack, the Spaniard kicked again two kilometres from the summit, this time forging clear alone. He maintained his buffer on the 4km drop to the line to claim stage victory, 22 seconds clear of Pellizzari.

The green jersey group was whittled down dramatically on the last two climbs, with Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) among those to lose contact. In his absence, Foss had to do the bulk of the pace-making on the ascents, and the Norwegian performed his task admirably. Although he was unable to reel López back in, he snuffed out an attack from Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious) and reduced the green jersey group to just a handful of riders that included Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) and Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale).

Foss would later win the sprint for third place, 38 seconds down on López. In the overall standings, López holds a lead of 31 seconds over Foss, with O’Connor lying third at 45 seconds.

"It was an amazing day for me, because it's my first pro victory," López said. "But it was a really shit day for everybody, because we started with rain and 4°C. It was one of the hardest days on the bike in my life.

"We started with one objective, which was not to get cold, but that was impossible. At the end I changed to the other objective, I tried to go for the stage. In the beginning, I didn't feel good, I couldn't feel my hands. But in the end, my legs felt good, which is the most important thing, no?"

Steady rain and temperatures of 4°C greeted the peloton on Wednesday's stage around Schwaz, which had a slightly earlier start to avoid a broadcast clash with the finale of Flèche Wallonne. Neither the early hour nor the miserable conditions served to deter Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers), who powered away in the opening kilometres and settled into a lone raid off the front.

The lack of company did little to deter Ganna, whose solo effort served a dual purpose. His presence off the front meant that his Ineos teammates didn't have to work to defend Tobias Foss' green jersey, and it also served as a most useful work-out for the Hour Record holder ahead of the Giro d'Italia.

Ganna established a maximum lead of 3:30 during his extended, televised training session, with DSM-Firmenich PostNL performing much of the pace-making in the peloton behind. The gap began to drop, however, on the approach to the day's main difficulties, the two laps over the category 2 climbs of Weerberg and Pillberg.

Ganna dropped inside three minutes with 40km remaining, and the gap shrank more quickly once the road began to climb the Weerberg. The Italian survived over the top, but he would be swept up on the lower slopes of the Pillberg as DSM continued their pace-making.

The racing among the GC contenders sparkled into action a couple of kilometres from the top of the Pillberg, where Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) tested the waters with an attack that splintered the green jersey group and appeared to put Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) in difficulty.

Bardet was quickly reeled in, with Foss controlling affairs, but that didn't quell the attacking. Giulio Pellizzari (VF-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) was the next to try his luck, and when the Italian pressed clear, Juan Pedro López (Lidl-Trek) bounded across in pursuit. The pair crested the summit with 20 seconds or so in hand on the green jersey group, and they combined well to extend that buffer as they swung around to take on the pair of climbs for a second time.

By now, Thomas was working in the green jersey group on behalf of Foss, though Pellizzari and López were still stretching out their lead, which reached 50 seconds on the approach to the penultimate climb.

Pellizzari and López still had 40 seconds in hand when they crested the summit, while the green jersey group was reduced to just 20 or so riders after Foss himself put in a long turn on the ascent, with Thomas losing contact more definitively near the summit.

By now, López and Pellizzari were growing in confidence, and they hit the foot of the last, 3.2km ascent of Pillberg still with 40 seconds over their pursuers. López looked to shake off his companion with an early acceleration, but Pellizzari held firm on the lower slopes.

2km from the summit, however, López kicked again, and this time the Spaniard managed to open a gap over Pellizzari as he set off in pursuit of his first professional victory.

Back in the green jersey group, meanwhile, Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious) jumped on the offensive on the ascent, opening a small gap. Foss, now without Thomas, took up the reins of pursuit, and men like Bardet were content to let the Norwegian perform the bulk of the heavy lifting as he reeled Poels back in.

Foss' effort didn't make any inroads into López's lead, but it did serve to whittle down the green jersey group still further. By the time he reached the summit with 4.5km to go, he had just seven riders for company – Bardet, Ben O'Connor, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Aurélien Paret-Peintre (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Poels, Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) and Iván Sosa (Movistar).

The Norwegian would lose the jersey at day's end, but his pace-making has nonetheless helped to refine the list of challengers for overall victory ahead of Thursday's pivotal stage over the Passo del Vetriolo to Borgo Valsugana.

Out of everything we did in PR this was by far my favorite. The guys are such great entertainers and servers as well! Our drinks were never empty and the food was so good. My boyfriend and I had so much fun snorkeling and the island they take you to is so beautiful!

My friends and I booked this Catamaran trip as part of our recent vacation in San Juan. The staff was professional and fun, and the trip went really smoothly. Would definitely book again!

Very enjoyable! Carlos, our guide, was excellent! He was so knowledgable, informative, nice, patient and loved sharing his culture. He was an excellent driver and very personable. He even stopped at a local place for lunch before leaving the forest that we didn't expect. What a treat!

This trip was amazing! The staff on the vessel are top notch, very caring and made you feel welcomed, safe and comfortable. Willy does a great job helping you learn how to snorkel. This is a must do if you visit Puerto Rico. Had so much fun!!

John Maclean, A.K.A The Juan Maclean, is an experimental electronic musician from Providence, Rhode Island, US, blending elements of post-punk with early electro house.

Before establishing himself as an individual artist, Maclean played guitar as part of the Sub Pop band Six Finger Satellite, whose synthesiser-addled post-hardcore was influenced by bands such as Big Black, Devo and Suicide, moving to a more post-punk, kraut-inspired noise that utilised electronics more heavily. Along with LCD Soundsytem's James Murphy, the pair became involved with the production duties for the band, which further changed their sound.

The band eventually broke up in the late 90s, with Maclean taking a break from the music business until James Murphy, who had just started his dance-punk label DFA Records, urged his friend to again start making music.

John Maclean began making music under the moniker, The Juan Maclean, beginning to experiment with modern electronic equipment, fusing his post-punk influences with early Detroit Techno and Chicago House. He released a number of singles on DFA and appeared on several compilations for the label, with "You Can't Have it Both Ways" and "Give Me Every Little Thing" becoming minor hits in 2002 and 2003 respectively.

His debut album, "Less Than Human" came out in 2005, a very experimental effort, that established his sound that borrowed from his love of Kraftwerk to Funkadelic, to Talking Heads to Frankie Goes to Hollywood. The album also featured the vocal talents of Nancy Whang, who had previously sung with LCD Soundystem. "The Future Will Come" followed in 2009, which saw Maclean and Whang's work together continue, displayed in the singles "Happy House" and "The SImple Life."

Maclean took his hand to remixing, becoming fairly prolific in creating reinterpretations of contemporary and classic tracks, such as Chromeo's "Me and My Man," Stevie Nicks' "Secret Love" and Roy Davis Jr's "I Have a Vision." His 2013 record, "In a Deam" brought in some 80s synth-pop influences, adding to the band's eclectic mix of inspiration from which they draw their sound, with Nancy Whang's vocals becoming a more prominent feature in Maclean's music.

Live reviews

John Maclean also known as his stage name, The Juan Maclean. (Clever) is an American electronic musician. He is one of those musicians who has his fingers in a lot of pies, having been the guitarist for the post-hardcore band Six Finger Satellite. He has been teaching English in New Hampshire, keeping the music going the whole time. He released the single “Happy House” which this congregation tonight no doubt is hoping he plays in his set. His set I was warned before is going to be a modest hour and a half set. Lets think of it as a movie, the exposition being a song called “Give Me Every Little Thing” which was released in 2003. “Tito’s Way” is a worthy third act of this performance seeing some interesting dance moves from the patrons in this space. “Feel Like Movin” keeps this party going strongly, keeping everyone moving throughout, of course, people are taking regular bar breaks to refuel on alcohol and liquid confidence but all in all the music goes down a treat for The Juan Maclean.

Tell Me Más: Bodine Talks New Album "Quemo Lento" and Growing From Hardships

Published on 4/22/2024 at 9:27 AM

the uan tour

In the music video for her piano-driven interlude "Bambi," Bodine poses in the middle of a dense forest, artistically garbed in assorted animal bones as she croons over the black and white footage with an ear-catching voice that straddles mezzo and alto ranges. The visual doubled as an announcement video for her sophomore EP, "Quemo Lento," which dropped last month. Still, if anyone got the impression the project would hinge on somber instrumentals, her other tracks quickly proved them wrong. The follow-up singles "No Me Quiere Más Na'" and "Nalgaje" present a saucier and more liberated version of Bodine. But who is the real Bodine? Is it the contemplative, artsy soul hinted at in the first track, or the one who takes pride in homaging vedette Iris Chacón and singing catchy odes to booties? The answer is unsurprising to those who know her — she's both.

Born in Amsterdam, Bodine Koehler Peña and her family relocated to Puerto Rico when she was 8, and that's where she spent her formative years. After a brief stint in a Catholic elementary school in Old San Juan, she enrolled in the Escuela Especializada en Ballet Julián E. Blanco. The institution offered an opportunity to learn both traditional courses and dance.

"We trained from 7:30 in the morning until 11:30, and then took a shower, [ate] lunch, and had academics until 5," she says. Bodine doesn't hesitate to refer to herself as having been a "wild child" during her early teenage years, spurring her mother into finding another outlet for all that energy.

"I never followed rules," she says, slyly grinning. "And my mom was like, 'Wow, I have to find things for her to do, to really keep her off the street.' I was making too many friends too fast."

Her solution wasn't far away: an old piano they had in the house often grabbed Bodine's attention. "I would always sit down and play some disparates," she laughs. Noting her interest in music, her mother got her formal piano classes at San Juan's Department of Art and Culture. Soon after, her grandfather helped cover the costs of enrolling her at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, where she eventually took courses in piano, songwriting, and opera singing.

During this time, Bodine gained what she today calls a "survival instinct" that she's harbored ever since. Her family relied primarily on public transportation, but the surplus of classes she was taking meant her days ended late. She and her mother would walk dimly lit streets and bridge underpasses to bus stops, often paying with coins they had scrounged up. Far from the façade of the carefree, impossibly beautiful model that came later, Bodine looks back at those days as tinged with uncertainty and worry. To hear her tell it, her ambitions were born from a desire to protect her family, whom she saw was sacrificing so much for her.

"It was a necessity. The way it came to me, it was not even me really looking for it," Bodine says. "I was just like, 'I have to take care of my mom.'"

Her most significant break came at the young age of 13 and resulted from a spur-of-the-moment decision. As she tells it, on an inspired whim, she walked into the Calle Loíza offices of notable Puerto Rican fashion designer Harry Robles and declared herself his next model. Her spunkiness and confidence impressed Robles, and the very next day, she had the gig. This was the first step on the path that led to her becoming Miss Puerto Rico and participating in Miss Universe 2012 in front of millions.

While she tries not to dwell on her years as the reigning Miss Puerto Rico and her experiences afterward as a budding model in New York City, especially in light of the more upbeat and optimistic flavor of "Quemo Lento," she shares that that phase of her career created an arc that has molded her into who she is today. She's proud of the work, but readily admits she took the opportunity because of its benefits.

"The reason I got in there was they told me, 'Hey, you will get some money. You will get a car.' And I needed [to pay for] school, I needed a car, I needed to buy books, I needed to help my family," she says. What came after her participation in Miss Universe was another deck of cards, one that didn't turn out in her favor. According to Bodine, these days, women who are successful in pageants go on to appear in TV shows or receive greater opportunities for their careers. But in her time, she says, "it wasn't like that."

"I had to provide for my family, for myself, and so I had to leave and hustle."

She continues: "You finish, and then you're like, 'I need work, I need an income.' So I had to go get that. I had to provide for my family, for myself, and so I had to leave and hustle."

Bodine doesn't water down the disillusion she felt. "It was a lot. I had a lot of people around me [those days]. I had a lot of 'friends' around me. And the truth is I was 17, 18, 19 when all this happened," she says. When she returned to fending for herself, reality became a cold splash in her face. "That's when you know who your friends really are. I had no support. All my 'friends' were not my friends. And that gets really lonely. That was lonely, and very disappointing, and very heartbreaking."

The sometimes toxic negativity from the press and public that threatened to overshadow her reign was also disheartening. These days, she tackles it in a more holistic manner despite agreeing that the media's hyper-focus on "messy" celebrities tends to be cruel.

"It is cruel. And I think I just knew that it was part of the process. When you're in the public eye, you need to understand that you just need to really be passionate about what you want in your life and speak to that, because no matter what, there's always going to be negativity," she says. "There's always going to be people who try to push you down."

Even back then, Bodine was aware of the particular vitriol reserved for women, especially young women, who were scrutinized more than the average person and were given less leeway and grace to make mistakes. She's thankful she got through it, and more so that there is accountability now that didn't exist back then.

"I think all women were in a situation where they were completely vulnerable. And hey, bad timing, I guess. I think today not everybody can say whatever they want about particular women," she says. "Back then — this is before the #MeToo movement — you could say anything and everything. And I'm sure a lot of girls experienced that, not only in my world but in [other industries]."

Her post-Miss stint as a model was also rocky and uphill at the start, owing to that same lack of support. "I didn't know anybody. I had no agency. I applied [and] everyone said no to me. I applied to more than 20 agencies, from the most deep dungeon ones to the top. And they all said no," she says.

The situation became so dire it began to resemble an absurdist comedy at one point. "I remember I was so stressed that I had so much acne all over. I was so stressed I literally grew a beard," she laughs. "I was so desperate for work that I went to the booker, and I'm like, 'Listen to me. I need a job. I need to get booked. I'll do anything. I could do [a] Proactiv campaign. I can do anything, I can do even Gillette.'"

As fate would have it, she did eventually get signed, and steady work began to arrive. Still, the phantoms of her past and her survival instinct never went away. Twelve years and two albums later, Bodine looks back on what has led her to today with a mix of gratitude and melancholy. "Celos," her underrated first EP, was imbued with a darker sound, even when it was trying to be a joint that could still pass as sensual and club-worthy. The reason for that is clear in hindsight.

"It was a time I was really depressed," she shares. "I was about to . . . stop being in the industry." She ran into the same roadblocks that had pestered her for over a decade since her pageant days. Namely, people trying to box her into a persona that was nowhere close to who she felt she was. It's a big reason she's maintained being an independent artist so far.

"I didn't submit [to industry pressure]," she says. "So that project was born from a place of restarting all over."

She's still striving to grow as an artist, and just as oysters create pearls from irritants that invade their system, Bodine sees everything she went through as a process that has made her more formidable than ever as a woman and a creative. She credits meditation as one of the most significant tools that helped her harness her experiences positively, saying she took it up early in her career because "there was a lot of waiting time" to indulge in it. But she also says she feels thankful for her art when it comes to shooting down any criticism or negativity.

"I feel protected by music. I think that music, my work, will always talk for me," she says. "Quemo Lento," with its varied offering of genres and eclectic guest artists, tells the world that she's feeling much more optimistic.

"I'm in a good place — happy and really proud, and finally doing what I've actually wanted to do my whole life. I wish I were here before, but I just know it wasn't my time yet," she says. "I had to go through this whole thing to help my family and change my circumstances. And it was tough, but we're here now."

It might've been a slow burn, but she's made it and is ready for what's next.

Classic film lovers: See James Dean's apartment and more on new TCM tour at Warner Bros.

I n 2021, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour created new interactive exhibits focused on the company's recent history, unveiling areas dedicated to the DC Comics universe and the "Harry Potter" franchise.

This week, the popular Studio Tour in Burbank is doubling down on its more distant past.

Warner Bros. is now offering a Turner Classic Movies-branded version of its studio tour that will bring guests to previously off-limit areas of the lot, including vintage animation buildings, a mini rose garden and an apartment that once housed James Dean. The 90-minute tram portion of the jaunt — about 30 minutes longer than the studio's standard tram excursion — will allow guides to go deeper into the history of the studio's catalog to deliver factoids related to such films as "Casablanca," "My Fair Lady," "Rebel Without a Cause," "Auntie Mame" and many more.

"We're off the leash," says Brad Taylor, a 15-year tour guide veteran with Warner Bros., noting that the TCM excursion will include time for guides to chat with visitors about their favorite films.

"We get to talk to the guests and really hang out with people who have the same passion that we do," Taylor says. "I find that 'classics' guests are less about behind-the-scenes and more, 'I can't believe this is where we are.' It's just the look on their faces when they realize 'Casablanca' filmed here, or James Dean stood right here."

The launch of the TCM tour arrives during the network's 30th anniversary and close to 12 months after classic film fans were given a scare. In June, Warner Bros. announced that layoffs would hit TCM, including some of the network's top executives, prompting concern from prestige directors such as Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson and Martin Scorsese. After garnering national attention, key cuts were reversed and Warner Bros. sought to assure fans that TCM would continue to be handled with care.

TCM network hosts — Eddie Muller, Jacqueline Stewart, Ben Mankiewicz, Alicia Malone and Dave Karger — recorded new video segments for the outing. The tour will take guests into the lot's Property House, an area not visited by the standard tour. Here, visitors can get glimpses of materials for a full set, including items for a complete Oval Office setting, but expect guides to highlight vintage items, such as a throne from the Errol Flynn pirate film "Captain Blood."

Danny Kahn, vice president-general manager of the studio tour, says there have been numerous requests over the years from guests to delve a little deeper into the studio's animation history. That's why the TCM tour will for the first time take visitors to an area of the lot once known as "Termite Terrace," which from 1955 to 1964, says Taylor, housed the animation department, a building with a sloped roof designed to capture sunlight. Animation legend Chuck Jones, says Kahn, had an office in the Termite Terrace area in the 1990s despite Warner's moving animation production elsewhere.

Another unique tour locale is the exterior of the Dean apartment. When Dean resided there during filming of "East of Eden," it was actually across the street from the lot, the apartment nesting above a pharmacy. But gradual studio expansion has led to the area now being on Warner Bros. property.

"That was an actual drugstore with apartments, and the studio rented it for him," Kahn says. "I think it was to keep an eye on him and keep him on a short leash."

The tour will also give tram riders a look at executive life at the studio, allowing them to briefly walk around a rose garden. The manicured spaces once held a tennis court as well as offices and personal screening rooms for the likes of studio mogul Jack Warner, with many of the structures dating to the 1920s. "It's a really historic area of the lot that hasn't really changed a lot in all these years," says Kahn, noting the area is still in use by studio principals. "Jack Warner, when he ran the studio, privatized the first floor. That was a massage parlor that he had beneath his office."

Staples of the tour, such as a journey around the backlot city streets, a visit to the "Friends" set and cafe and recent additions highlighting the studio's modern franchise films are included in the TCM trek, as is a pre-tour reception with beverages and pastries. All told, expect the tour to last about 3½ hours. A tour spokesperson says the first TCM-branded outing is scheduled for Wednesday, with trams expected to depart daily after that date. Adult tickets are $95, but there is a Southern California resident discount available for $75.

"It feels so good to have TCM here," Kahn says. "People understand that the TCM brand is synonymous with classic film."

Maluma Promises ‘Most Ambitious Concert Production Yet’ on New Tour

  • By Tomás Mier

Maluma is promising an “exhilarating experience” on his upcoming tour. On Monday, the Colombian star revealed that after a year of working on his Don Juan LP, he’s ready to hit the road on a world tour .

“I am so excited to return to arenas around the U.S. this fall. I took a year off from touring to focus on perfecting what I feel is the best album of my career, Don Juan ,” Maluma said in a press release. “I can’t wait to perform the new songs from the album for my fans for the very first time alongside my greatest hits in what I consider to be my most ambitious concert production yet.”

“I’ve waited to give my fans a music and concert experience unlike any other and I expect the Don Juan U.S. Tour to be an exhilarating experience that they’ll never forget!” he added.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by MALUMA (@maluma)

Maluma last hit the road for his Papi Juancho tour in 2021 in support of the album, featuring songs like “ADMV, “Hawái,” and Parce,” which was released the year prior.

Maluma’s upcoming LP will follow the release of several collaborations and a solo single earlier this year, including “La Reina,” “ La Fórmula ” with Marc Anthony, and “Copas” with Jowell y Randy. He also worked with Anuel AA on “Diablo, Qué Chimba.”

Last August, he spoke to Rolling Stone about his musical influences as he worked on Don Juan . “My family, a lot. A lot, a lot. I feel like I’m coming back to my roots,” he said at the time. “When I went out from Medellín with my music around the world, I felt like I was losing a little bit of myself. Then I was doing some songs that, OK, maybe they were hits, but I didn’t feel like that was my essence.”

Juan was wonderful and so informative! He is knowledgeable about the history of San Juan and PR. He is energetic, witty, and a truly enjoyable person to spend a walk with. He is a gem in San Juan!

Juan Carlos was fantastic. Even after everyone else in my group canceled, he showed up on time to give me a solo tour with a bottle of water (which I was looking for) and a sample of his very own art. His tour was a great start to my adventures in Puerto Rico. He’s a native, perfectly bilingual, and very friendly and accommodating! Highly recommend.

Juan Carlos is great and fun tour guide! I would recommend him to anyone who's looking for a relaxing and comfortable tour!

We had a great time with Juan Carlos on our walking tour. It seemed like we saw the entire island by the time we finished as we circled old San Juan and cut through streets along the way. He even brought us water bottles and some of his own artwork as a souvenir!! We learned all sorts of historical facts and memories we will take home with us.

JC it’s the best tour guide you will find in PR !!! He knows the way around PR. Highly recommend JC whenever you visit Puerto Rico.

"At each stop, we had a delicious hand crafted cocktail, each unique to the bar/restaurant, and our night ended at a local craft beer pub, where we were offered several samples. Pablo, our guide, was amazing! He told us the story behind each location we visited, and some history of Old San Juan, as we walked the streets between stops. We did several tours with Spoon during our stay in San Juan, and I cannot say enough about the company. I'd definitely recommend this tour go on your must do list, while in San Juan!"

This tour was amazing from beginning to end! Our guide, Rocío, was knowledgeable, fun and passionate about sharing her experience as a local "sanjuanera", making our walk meaningful in multiple ways. Each of the stops comes with either something delicious to nibble on or some interesting fact about the city, making it a rich experience without pretending to be a history lesson; more like a light and fun way of learning highlights of Puerto Rican food and culture while taking in the views and tasting fabulous food. Old San Juan Walking Tour | One Day Puerto Rico Itinerary

Whether you’re visiting San Juan on a cruise or spending a few days in Puerto Rico, an Old San Juan walking tour should be at the top of your list of things to do!

As a former cruise ship worker , San Juan was one of my favorite ports to explore week after week.

One of the best decisions I ever made was taking myself on a self-guided walking tour of Viejo San Juan.

In just 3-4 hours, I was able to hit all of the major historical landmarks and popular photo-ops/ Instagram hotspots– and so can you!

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. By making a purchase through one of the links, I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thank you for your support and for helping me keep this blog up!

How to use this map: Click on the faded star next to the title to save this map, and click the square in the top left of the map before the title to view location details.

Self-Guided Walking Tour Suggested Routes

A self-guided tour through Old San Juan can be broken down into two main sections:

  • The coastal perimeter (marked in black on the map)- Where most of the historical landmarks are located
  • The interior streets (marked in burgundy on the map)- Where most of the photo spots, restaurants, and shops are found

If you want to hit all the locations listed on this free Old San Juan walking tour, I recommend breaking down your route into the two sections like I did and doing one after the other (in any order).

For those arriving from the cruise ship port, it may make more sense to walk around the exterior first and then end the day perusing the downtown streets.

I began this tour in the interior section as I took an Uber to Plaza Colon. After walking all the way down to the Umbrella Street, I then made my way clockwise to the listed destinations.

The Coastal Perimeter

Paseo de la princesa.

black and white photo of tree lined promenade with fountain at the end

Paseo de la Princesa is a beautiful promenade lined with fountains, lamp posts, and trees— all accompanied with stunning views of the San Juan Bay.

On this picturesque boardwalk, you’ll find street vendors, art exhibits and shops, restaurants, bars, and even live music.

Address: 54 C. de la Fortaleza, San Juan

Where to stay in Old San Juan: Old San Juan Guest House , El Colonial Adults Only , Casa Sol Bed and Breakfast , Fortel Hostel

La Fortaleza

National Historic Landmark La Fortaleza (The Fortress) was built in the mid-1500s for military defense.

Since its establishment, it has served a number of purposes in addition to a fortress, including a prison, arsenal, and its current function as the governor’s residence.

Because the building is still an active government building, those interested in looking inside can only do so through official guided tours. These 30-minute tours are offered throughout the weekdays.

La Fortaleza can be seen from a distance while on the Paseo de La Princesa as well as at the end of the Umbrella Street (Calle Fortaleza).

Address: 63 C. de la Fortaleza, San Juan

Puerta de San Juan

red gate

Puerta de San Juan is the city’s iconic colorful gate that’s found at the northern end of Paseo de la Princesa.

It’s a historical landmark that was previously used to protect the city during colonial times.

Standing 16 feet tall, the gate is also inscribed with the phrase, “ Benedictus Oui Venit In Nomine Domini ,” which means, “Welcome those who come in the name of God.”

Address: Cll Caleta De San Juan, San Juan

Museo de las Americas (Museum of the Americas)

three stories of former military barracks

The Museo de las Americas promotes the history and culture of the Americas through permanent and seasonal exhibits.

Visitors can learn about the indigenous, African, and European influences that shaped the Americas into the multi-faceted countries that they are today due to colonization and modern development.

The museum is actually inside what used to be the military’s barracks (Cuartel de Ballajá) during the colonial period. The beautiful courtyard is definitely a sight to take in!

You can also find unique, local folk art during the museum’s Domingo de Artesanos , which is an art showcase on the first Sunday of every month.

Address: Calle Beneficencia, San Juan

Hours: Thursday- Sunday 11 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro (“El Morro”)

Outside El Morro Fortress with US and Puerto Rican flags and grassy moat

Castillo San Felipe del Morro (also known as “El Morro” for short) is the island’s trademark fortification built at the tip of the San Juan Bay.

Completed in 1790, the six-level fortress was strapped with a cannon, and together with another yet smaller fort, Fortín San Juan de la Cruz (“El Cañuelo”), the two structures produced a crossfire that would protect the bay’s entrance from intruders.

There’s so much to explore inside the fortress, from barracks and batteries to panoramic views of the bay.

Lawn outside El Morro Fortification with adults and children lounging on the grass and flying kites

El Morro’s presence domineers over everything in nearby site.

The vast green lawn that leads up to the fort’s entrance is the perfect location for a picnic, sunbathing session, or just a short break during your walking tour.

Although there are always groups of people hanging out, the area is so spread out that you’ll have no problem finding space for yourself away from others.

Tip: Keep your receipt! El Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal only require one entrance fee for both locations, so you’ll be able to get a 2-for-1 deal as long as your receipt shows that you’ve already paid for one ticket.

Address: Calle del Morro & Calle Norzagaray

Hours: Daily 9 a.m.- 6 p.m.

Price: General Admission- $7; Free for children under 15

Cementerio Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzi

Tombstones in a cemetery by the sea in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Just outside El Morro you’ll find the Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery.

While it may seem strange that a cemetery is a landmark, the beautiful graveyard overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is definitely with a visit.

The cemetery’s location by the water was chosen as a way to symbolize a person’s spirit crossing over to the afterlife.

To this day, many of Puerto Rico’s most prominent citizens are laid to rest here.

If you don’t feel like going down and walking through the cemetery, it can easily be admired from the path leading to/from El Morro.

Address: Calle Cementerio, San Juan

La Perla shantytown neighborhood in San Juan, Puerto Rico with colorful homes built into a hill by the water

Next to Cementario Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzi and alongside the coast is La Perla, a historical shantytown.

The colorful neighborhood is most widely known recently as the filming location for the 2017 worldwide chart-topper “Despacito” by Puerto Rican artists Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee.

La Perla was first established as the location of a slaughterhouse as both slaughterhouses, cemeteries, and homes of former slaves and non-white servants were required to be outside of the main city center in the late 19th century.

Castillo de San Cristóbal

Different levels of the Castillo de San Cristobal Fortress in San Juan with ocean view

Castillo de San Cristóbal is El Morro’s sister fortress that was build to protect the city from land attacks.

It’s the largest Spanish-built fortification built in the New World, spanning roughly 27 acres.

The fortress features several sentry boxes ( garitas) which are strategic lookout points that guards would use to keep an eye out for any potential threats.

Visitors can explore the different levels of the fortification as well as get a breathtaking panoramic view of Old San Juan and the bay.

The Interior Streets

Plaza colón.

Statue of Christopher Columbus and light post with banner for event at Plaza Colon in San Juan

Plaza Colón is the land entrance to Old San Juan and can be recognized by its monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus.

The plaza is a good meeting or drop-off point if you’re taking a taxi or Uber to/from Viejo San Juan.

Plaza de Armas

the uan tour

Plaza de Armas is one of the city’s main plazas.

On the northern end lies San Juan City Hall, and on the west is the Department of State building.

At this plaza, you’ll find several statues, a fountain, benches, and street vendors selling local pastries and coffee.

Address: C. de San Francisco & Calle San José

Umbrella Street (Calle de la Fortaleza)

Perhaps one of the most Instagrammable locations in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, Fortzaleza Street is home to the iconic and colorful hanging umbrellas.

The popular attraction is located at the end of Calle de la Fortaleza, just in front of La Fortaleza, where the governor resides.

It’s worth noting that the hanging decor changes periodically, so you might not always see vibrant umbrellas.

During one of my visits, the umbrellas were all camouflage patterned to represent the military.

In 2021, the umbrellas were replaced by a large banner with the Puerto Rican flag’s design.

Address: C. de Fortaleza, San Juan

Hotel El Convento

Bright yellow hotel El Convento with large trees, and locals sitting outside listening to a man playing the guitar

Hotel El Convento is a chic 4-star hotel with a rooftop pool that’s conveniently located in the middle of the city.

But more importantly, the few blocks around the area are absolutely gorgeous and worth checking out if you want some colorful pictures!

Address: 100 C. del Cristo, San Juan

Catedral Basilica Menor de San Juan Bautista

Catedral Basílica de San Juan Bautista

One block away from Hotel El Convento is the America’s second oldest cathedral, Catedral Basílica Metropolitana de San Juan Bautista, also known in English as the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Saint John the Baptist.

Built in the mid 1500s, the cathedral is where the body of Ponce de Leon is entombed.

Address: 151 C. del Cristo, San Juan

La Puerta de la Bandera- Puerto Rican Flag Door

Mural of black and white puerto rican flag on door of abandoned building next to paintings of people

Any visitor will quickly see that Old San Juan is an oasis of art, from brightly painted buildings to beautiful murals on doors.

Another iconic photo spot in Puerto Rico is the Flag Door, or La Puerta de la Bandera from local artist Rosenda Álvarez.

Located at 51 Calle San José, a mural of the Puerto Rican flag is painted on the door of an abandoned historical building.

Address: 51 Calle San José, San Juan

Callejon de la Puerta Bandera- Flag Door Alley

mural of puerto rican flag on side of orange building in flag alley

Yet another popular Instagram photo location is also of the Puerto Rican flag on a door, but this time in an alley at the end of Calle Imperial.

I stumbled upon this mural without prior research as I was so immersed in the beautiful rainbow buildings in the neighboring streets.

colorful buildings in a small cobblestone street lined with potted plants

If you have time (and enough energy), I definitely recommend spending a good half hour wandering through the area.

The streets are so colorful and perfect for photo ops.

You could even hire a Puerto Rico photographer for a fun and memorable photoshoot!

Address: Calle Imperial, San Juan

Where to Eat

bowl of fresh salmon, edamame, seaweed, and avocado from Stuffed Avocado Shop in San Juan, Puerto Rico

A favorite restaurant among us cruise ship crew members is the Stuffed Avocado Shop .

While it’s not traditional or local eats by any means, it is the perfect option if you’re looking for a healthy meal with lots of fresh ingredients and greens– especially if you’re visiting San Juan on a cruise!

At this build-your-own-bowl eatery, patrons can choose from a wide and delicious selection of bases, protein, sauces, and toppings.

The menu also has a few “Signature Avocados,” with combinations already made for those unsure of what ingredients to put together.

From cauliflower rice and baby greens to pulled pork and mango tuna, the Stuffed Avocado is both tasty and healthy.
