8 Important Things You Should Know Before Tibet Tours

After operating Tibet tours for over 10 years, we have already achieved a deep understanding about What Tibet has to offer, what our customers want to see and experience most, what are the major concerns during our customers’ trip. Here we list out the most frequently asked questions that our former customers about tour planning, travel documents, itinerary, hotel, booking, dinning. You are also welcomed to submit your question to us, our travel experts are always ready to help.

Tibet Tourism Bureau stipulates that all foreign tourists, including Taiwanese, are not allowed to travel Tibet independently. You are only permitted to travel to Tibet with a China travel agency which will arrange travel services for you, including creating itinerary, tour guide, driver and vehicle, permit application, etc. This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a free and relaxing trip in Tibet. Actually, most areas in Tibet are open for foreign travelers, and can be visited with a tour, private tour or group tour, with China travel agency.

To travel in Tibet, all Non-Chinese passport holders need to have a Tibet Travel Permit which can only be applied for by China travel agencies like Tibet Discovery with Tibet Tourism Bureau in Lhasa. You must obtain it before your tour starting. The permit will be checked when you board your flight/train to Tibet.

Traveling with Tibet Discovery, you don't have to worry about the complicated procedures of Tibet Travel Permit application. All you have to do is to confirm a tour package with us and send us your passport and Chinese via copies at least 15~20 days in advance before your tour, we will take care of all the rest things. Once the permit is issued by Tibet Tourism Bureau, we will deliver to you at the appointed address in China's other cities, such as your hotel, local travel agency, etc. Besides Tibet Travel Permit, you also need to have a Chinese visa and valid passport to support your Tibet trip.

Generally speaking, months from May to October are recommended. Other months are usually very cold, and possible have heavy snow. During November to April of next year, Namtso Lake is mostly frozen, and not suitable for travel. If you only visit Lhasa, Gyantse and Shigatse and other cities with lower altitude, you can take a trip all year around.

Having an average altitude of about 4500 meters (14,750 ft), Tibet is the highest land in the world. The altitude of the capital city Lhasa is 3650m (12,000 ft). Most of attractions in Tibet are located over 3700 meters above the sea level. The elevations of some higher places, such as EBC, Namtso Lake, Yamdrok Lake, Mount Kailash (trek) may reach to more than 4500 meters between 5700 meters.

You may suffer a bit from High Altitude Sickness in the beginning days of your Tibet trip if you haven’t had rich high plateau travel experience. But don’t worry too much, the high altitude can be acclimatized usually in 2~3 days. Our suggestion is to take a physical examination and get suggestions from your doctor, and also bring some medicines to prevent from High Altitude Sickness before your trip. While in Tibet, you should keep warm all the time, avoid strenuous activities, drink more water and eat more vegetables and carbohydrates. You’d better not take showers during the first two days after your arrival at Tibet. If you don’t feel well, get help from your tour guide or go to the hospital without any delay.

Currently common tourist can only get to Tibet from China cities or Nepal (Indian passports pilgrims can enter Tibet from specific border ports).

Travel from China Cities to Tibet

Take a domestic flight from other cities like Chengdu, Beijing, Xian, Xining, Kunming, etc. or an international flight from Kathmandu, or take a train from China's other cities, like Chengdu, Xian, Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xining, Lanzhou, etc.

Travel from Nepal to Tibet

Take a flight from Kathmandu Tribuvan International Airport to Lhasa, or enter Tibet from Gyirong Port at Nepal-China border. This port is about 89km from Kathmandu, about 820km from Lhasa, and about 360km from Mount Everest (Tibet Side). To travel from Nepal to Tibet, you have to apply for a Group Visa in Kathmandu.

A large backpack and a smaller one are recommended (the smaller one can be used for daily activities). Also bring the necessary medicine you need. Other stuffs like sunglasses, snow glasses, hats, lip balm, sun block are recommended.

As for wearing, you are suggested to dress in layers (both thin and thick jackets). Down jacket is necessary in Spring (Feb~May) and Autumn (Sept~Nov). A pair of durable and comfortable shoes is necessary.

1) You are not allowed to take photos inside the chapels of the monasteries, but photography of the architecture is allowed; 2) You should take off your hat and sunglasses to show respect when you entering a monastery. Wearing shorts and exposing shoulders are disrespectful; 3) Try to walk and talk quietly to not disturb the living and study of the monks in the monasteries.

Kumbun Monastery, one of the 6 major <strong>Tibet</strong>an Lamaism temples which is also the birthplace of Reverend Zongkaba.<br />

It is famed for its grandeur and 3 treasures which are embossed embroideries, wall murals and paintings.Then visit<br />

Dongguan Mosque, one of the 4 major Mosques in the North-eastern part of China which has a distinctive Zang style<br />

Continue your train journey <strong>to</strong> Lhasa on Qingzang Railway, the world’s highest railway, passing through Xining,<br />

Ge’ermu, Tuotuo River, Anduo, Naqu, Dangxiong and finally reaching Lhasa. No meals are served on board the train,<br />

so please make your own meals arrangement. During the train journey, catch some of the outstanding sights and<br />

scenery like Qinghai Lake, <strong>Mount</strong> Kunlun, Kekexili, Gebihongliu <strong>Chan</strong>gjiangyuan, <strong>Mount</strong> Dangla, Cuona Lake and<br />

D5 LHASA – POTALA PALACE – JOHKANG–BARKHOR(B/L/D) (Overnight in Lhasa Local 4* Hotel)<br />

Lhasa. You'll have a whole day of sightseeing in the holy city: in the morning, visit Lhasa's landmark - Potala Palace, a<br />

structure that deserves a place as one of the wonders of eastern architecture. In the afternoon, visit Jokhang Temple -<br />

the most revered religious structure in <strong>Tibet</strong>, and the surrounding area - Barkhor, Lhasa's pilgrimage circuit. This area<br />

is both the spiritual heart of Lhasa and the main commercial district for <strong>Tibet</strong>ans.<br />

D6 LHASA –-NAMTSO LAKE – LHASA(Breakfast/Lunch/Diner) (Overnight in Lhasa Local 4* Hotel)<br />

Set off from Lhasa, pass by Qingzang Highway and traverse across the snowy <strong>Mount</strong> Nagenla <strong>to</strong> Namtso Lake, the<br />

world’s highest salty water lake which stands at 4,718 metres above sea level. Its vast bay, lush greenery and crystal<br />

clear water made the lake look like a dazzling pearl encrusted on the vast Qiangtang grassland. Thereafter, coach back<br />

cross the 5045m Karola, with its awesome roadside views of the Nojin Kangtsang Glacier. In the afternoon, you'll go<br />

7 nights 10 Days Finland Trip by Chan Brothers Travel Singapore

Before I proceed,I want all who reads this to know that I am representing my friends too in this review about our recent 10 day tour to Finland. The main attraction of the trip was to see the Northern Lights. However, we didn’t get to see the lights even on a night that has an index of 6 with 80% chances of seeing the lights. This is because Chan brothers travel did not mention or have no idea that there are local Aurora hunting trips or some call it Northern lights hunting trip which only costs a mere 45euro which we would definitely have joined because that’s the highlight of the trip after paying so much! Chan brother provided a Northern light hunting that only lasts for 2 hours which ended at 11 because that’s when the coach driver’s work ends which we understood and accept. All those that had experienced seeing the lights says that it usually appears past midnight. But because we had no idea of the optional local tour, we went back the hotel at 11pm. And true enough many that were in Rovaniemi that night saw the Aurora Lights at about 1 plus while we slept the night away like fools! I only found out about the local hunting trips at the reception the next morning after chatting with the receptionists because they were excited thinking we saw the lights! And the other activities which we were very unhappy was the reindeer-sleigh rides, husky rides and snow biking which were part of the highlights and was also the reason why Chan Brothers cost more than Dynasty Travel. It was very unfair and unacceptable because knowing the short daylight in Finland at this time of the year, we should be able to have at least one or two of the activities early so that we can see the forest that the huskies and reindeers was driving us thru. Instead, we had all the three main activities passed 3pm in absolute darkness!!! It was no difference to riding a underground MRT or a bus in the night to Genting!!! Everyone complained about that. Many of us asked the guide and she said the company arranged it! What lousy and unfair arrangement!!! My friends who went with EU tours had all their activities in the day! I must say that Chan Brothers is lucky that this particular group of tourists was all educated and well mannered people, however if I would to ask around today and offer a petition I think more than half would agree with what I have written here on this page because this was truly what happened. I paid S$5000 plus per pax this trip all I got was to see the snow which I should have gone to Hokkaido and only one little good experience was the one night stay in the glass igloo. But mind you every travel agency can arrange that. So think and find out clearly so you don’t have any regrets like me and my friends before you pick and book a tour with a travel agency! Please note that the guide was not all fault, in fact when one of my friend fell and fractured her wrist, she took some time to go to the local hospital with us. I am just so pissed off when my friends asked me why I missed the lights? Why my activities are all in darkness!!! Why why why!!!! Chan Brothers why??? Chris Lee

Tomas provided us with an incredible visit to Finland. He drove us through the countryside, showed us where he lived and told us about the rural life in Finland. We had a great visit at the quaint little town of Porvoo. We went back to Helsinki where we had a fresh lunch at the fishmarket and did some sight seeing and shopping. Tomas was very accommodating and made sure we saw everything we could in the amount of time we had. We had lots of great conversations about the effects of global warming in this area and he showed us much more than expected. Thanks for a great visit!!! Highly recommended!

The experience was one of the best things I have ever done ! It was perfect from the beginning of the day being picked up at our apartment by our friendly driver. We took a 45 minute journey outside Helsinki through a snowy wonder land . Where we taken to a frozen lake to meet the beautiful huskies and their owner. We helped with the dogs on to sledge and my partner and I were taken across a frozen lake and through woodland. The dogs were manificant our guide told us all their names. We went out to a wooded area were we had camp fire sausages marshmallow s and tea. It was a magical experience and well organised thank you to all the wonderful people we met that day xx

We did a Husky sleigh ride tour organized by Kontiki. We got a great preparation from the booking. Plus they really took care of all our wishes and provided us with a great transportation to the national park outside of Helsinki. Needless to say that the husky tour itself was a unique and amazing experience and one of the highlights of our winter trip to Helsinki. If you are around Helsinki and are keen on enjoying something special, we really recommend you to take a look on the offerings. The team is really among the best we have experienced so far!

We used Kontiki Finland to book the Husky Dog Sledding in Helsinki - we were picked up from our hotel right on time by the lovely and friendly taxi driver. He drove us approx. 45 mins to the national park where we met with Tomas who introduced us to the Huskys. This was by far the best thing I have ever done, it was so much fun spending time with the friendly dogs and learning about the sledding. The actual sledding itself went for about 45 minutes through the national park and at the end we had plenty of time with photos with the dogs and time to drink our coffee and eat marshmellows by the fire.

I had a wonderful experience working with Kontiki tours. Tomas ensured that it was an unforgettable day as he took care of every aspect of the dog sledding excursion.
