Tim McGraw's Columbus concert a hit for fans of country music star's classics

tim mcgraw previous tours

While the lyrics of the title track from Tim McGraw's most recent album — and namesake of his current tour — are concerned with being a person worth remembering, Columbus fans of the country music mainstay have already decided he is.

McGraw's Standing Room Only tour took over Nationwide Arena Saturday night with a sea of cowboy hats and checkered shirts, and a fair amount of sparkles.

For more than 90 minutes, McGraw took those in attendance on a journey through his more than three-decades-long career in Nashville, Tennessee, starting with "Truck Yeah," and ending his three-song encore with "Live Like You Were Dying."

In between, McGraw played many of the classics fans love, including "Just to See You Smile," "Red Ragtop," "Something Like That" and "Where the Green Grass Grows."

Current single "One Bad Habit," and "Standing Room Only" were the only songs from the 2023 album that made the cut for Saturday's show. McGraw also performed a cover of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer," to the great enjoyment of the crowd.

During the evening, McGraw also mixed in some of his well-known collaborations, including "Over and Over" that he released with rapper Nelly in 2004 and "Highway Don't Care."

The latter performance on Saturday night included a video montage of collaborator Taylor Swift and McGraw enthusiastically having the crowd sing Swift's portion of the 2013 hit. Swift , who is currently on hiatus from her own tour that you may have heard about, was an opening act for McGraw at the beginning of her career.

Opening for McGraw on this tour were Nashville quartet, The Woods, whose vintage country sound and pleasant harmonies got the crowd clapping along.

Carly Pearce, who with each song she releases continues to cement herself as one of Nashville's best "that boy done me wrong" songstresses, then performed a set that featured fan favorites "Every Little Thing," "Next Girl" and "What He Didn't Do."

More: Review: Olivia Rodrigo rocks her sold-out concert Friday night in Nationwide Arena

Pearce also played "Truck on Fire," a song from her upcoming album "Hummingbird" that will be released in June. The song, about a liar whose truck replaces his pants in being ablaze, is the kind of melody that has the potential to make waves as a single on the country charts if the reactions in Nationwide Arena are any indicator.

But the star of the night was the man at the top of the ticket. McGraw's energy and enthusiasm was contagious, with fist pumps and smiles during many of the more upbeat tracks.

While McGraw acknowledged early on in his set that he doesn't talk much during his performances — a skill he said he has honed while living with wife (and country music legend in her own right) Faith Hill and the couple's three daughters — McGraw gave high fives and fist bumps out throughout the evening to the front few rows of spectators he could reach.

McGraw also took time to acknowledge Massillon native Shawn Fichter , who plays drums on tour. Fichter's mom and several other family members were in attendance at Saturday night's concert and got a special shoutout from the stage.

Saturday night's set could have been much longer, particularly with the career longevity McGraw has experienced. With a career like that, fan favorites will no doubt be left on the cutting room floor of any tour. The most glaring omissions from the show were "Down on the Farm," "My Next Thirty Years" and "Don't Take the Girl."

However, McGraw played most of the tunes he knew fans wanted to hear and seemed amazed, even after more than 30 years, at the zeal with which they were received and sung back to him by the nearly sellout crowd.

The feeling McGraw exuded from the stage was astonishment that he continues to be able to do something he clearly loves doing. But at the root of it all, as he led the crowd in singing a cappella during his encore, is staying "Humble and Kind."

Tim McGraw walks a packed Climate Pledge Arena down memory lane

Concert review.

Only a few artists in country music could get away with calling their tour “Standing Room Only,” knowing that each night they’re sure to play to a packed house even when they visit NHL and NBA arenas.

Tim McGraw, who made good on that promise as fans were crammed up to the rafters Friday night at Climate Pledge Arena, is certainly one of those stars. A reliable hit-maker on his own — and with his wife, Faith Hill, since the 1990s — McGraw showed that he’s a vital performer four decades into his career.

Dressed in appropriately tight jeans and a black Henley, McGraw, 56, looked almost eerily ageless. Thankfully, his voice has remained just as youthful.

Country music shows tend to be arena rock shows in disguise and McGraw’s opening, “Truck Yeah,” didn’t do much to dispel that notion. The high-octane start worked, though, and the crowd immediately leapt to its feet and stayed there all night long.

The rocking start was sustained with “Southern Voice” before things took a decidedly country turn with “All I Want Is A Life,” off McGraw’s 1996 platinum album “All I Want.” That one might have been a deep cut for the surprising number of young folks in the crowd, but the strong contingent of millennials and boomers roared their approval.

McGraw was there to please, and he sent the crowd into a frenzy with his spot-on rendition of “Tiny Dancer” by Elton John. It’s an easy song to butcher but McGraw proved just how well his voice has been preserved by nailing every note.

Many fans might have traded in the Nelly cover “Over and Over” for another classic (such as the sadly missing “Don’t Take the Girl”) but there were still plenty of chances for McGraw to walk down memory lane, like with his 2002 hit “Watch the Wind Blow By.”

His new music turned out to be just as crowd-pleasing. New single “One Bad Habit” had a driving kinetic energy that signaled McGraw hasn’t lost his ear for country’s poppier side. Power ballad “Standing Room Only,” the title track from his 2023 album, proved it deserved to be the tour’s namesake.

The show moved briskly, efficiently even, without ever really feeling rushed. Before you knew it, McGraw had dazzled with old hit “Red Ragtop,” the iconic “I Like It, I Love It” and wrapped things up with “Real Good Man.”

If that had been it, most fans would have probably gone home just happy. After all, how often is it that you get to see a legend of the game still healthy and happy 30 years after his first hit album debuted?

But McGraw wanted to keep the party going and came back out with “The Cowboy in Me,” from 2001’s “Set This Circus Down.”

It was clear McGraw wanted to leave the crowd with some positivity and he accomplished that with “Humble and Kind,” his 2016 song by Lori McKenna, and “Live Like You Were Dying,” his megahit from 2004.

After the show, in the elevator up to the street an older woman realized that she had a little too much to drink. As she clutched onto her daughter, she smiled.

“But it was worth it for Tim McGraw,” she said. “That was the best show of all time.”

"I've been known to jump off stage and [my wife] tells me , if someone throws something at you, do not go off stage and go after them. I'll try to calm myself," McGraw said. "You can hurt the artist or someone else and it ruins the show for everyone. Don't throw anything that could hurt anybody."

However, he's also pumped to be on tour. McGraw explained why he liked arenas. He said, Where you don't have to worry about daylight." McGraw also spoke about the tour's namesake song and album and why it's among his best.

He said, "Throughout my career, my records have gravitated toward those kinds of songs. Stories about life. We all fail. We all have our terrible moments. And we're going to have moments and we're going to do the wrong thing, say the wrong thing, be politically incorrect from time to time," he says. "But all you can do is get up the next morning and try to do the next best thing. I'm always looking for songs that are life-affirming because they're therapeutic to me and remind me of how much of a better person I need to be.

"I think every artist will tell you this, but I feel my newest project is the best project I've done," McGraw said. "If I get to the point that the project I just finished isn't as good as the last, then I probably shouldn't do it anymore."

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
