Henry DeTamble (Eric Bana) is an ordinary Chicago-based librarian with an extraordinary gene that allows him to time   travel  involuntarily. His sporadic  time   travel  incidents take an emotional toll on his wife, Clare, whom he had met when she was a child. Clare grows up waiting for Henry, who had told her they would meet in the future, which they later do, fall in love, and get married. Through the narrative, we see the couple striving to fight the odds to lead a happy life. The heart-breaking sci-fi romance drama will make you cry yet keep you hooked till the very end. There’s also a series of the same name if you want more of Henry and Clare and their love story.

4. Deja Vu (2006) – Apple TV

Starring Denzel Washington in the lead role as ATF Special Agent Douglas Carlin, the movie, though slow-paced, keeps you engrossed. The narrative is set after a heart-breaking tragedy that causes a ship ferrying US Navy sailors and their families to explode killing over 500 passengers on board. Douglas (Doug) is assigned to the case and is surprised to find one of the victims’, Claire Kuchever (Paula Patton), calls on his office number. During the investigation, he unearths some startling revelations. His skills impress FBI Special Agent Paul Pryzwarra (Val Kilmer) who invites him to join a special team that is investigating the bombing by using a hi-tech  time -altering system called Snow White. Doug uses the  machine  to go back in  time  to save Claire and also stop the bombing.

Starring Adam Sandler, Kate Beckinsale, and Christopher Walkins the movie is a light-hearted yet poignant take on  time   travel . Adam plays a dejected architect Michael Newman who finds an intriguing remote control that allows him to go back in  time  and rectify his actions. He uses the remote to his advantage by taking revenge for being bullied at the workplace and also fast-forwards to the past where he is sick. But, the continuous fast-forward and repeat causes havoc in Michael’s life, teaching him a valuable lesson about  time  and relationships.

The sci-fi thriller follows Evan Treborn (Ashton Kutcher), a 20-year-old college student, who suffers from blackouts and experiences memory loss. Evan then finds he can  time   travel  to the periods of his blackouts and correct the situation. But, his actions in the past have a dreadful effect on the present and threaten to tear apart Evan’s simple world forever. The movie is told in a non-linear fashion and presents the story through Evan’s flashbacks between the age group seven to 13. As Evan tempers his past, his action gives rise to several present-day outcomes which he must choose from.

A teacher, Jake Epping (James Franco), gets an opportunity of a lifetime when he is offered a chance to  travel  back in  time  by an old friend AI Templeton (Chris Cooper). Flash is the story of Barry Allen, a forensic scientist and crime-scene investigator at The Central City Police Department, who is struck by lightning and falls into a coma. When he awakens 9 months later, he realises that he has outstanding speed and calls himself The Flash. 

Soon after, he meets Cisco Ramon, Caitlin Snow and Harrison Wells and realises that he's been reborn to fight crimes and undo the wrongs that have taken place with him and around him so far.

With 3 seasons and 35 episodes, it's a testament to enduring quality.

Love, Death + Robots is an animated anthology of eighteen shorts that delivers several different styles and stories, unlike anything else, spanning genres of science fiction, horror, comedy, fantasy, romance and many more. 7. The Umbrella Academy (TV Series 2019–2024)

The Umbrella Academy, known for its 3 seasons and 30 episodes, has been a steady presence since 2019. The series provides a familiar and reliable viewing experience for its audience.

In October 1989, on the same day, forty-three infants were born to random unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy even a day before. Seven of them get adopted by billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who creates The Umbrella Academy to prepare his children to protect the world.

But not all goes according to plan as the family fractures and the team breaks up. Almost thirty years later, six surviving members reunite upon learning about Hargreeve's passing and decide to work together to solve the mystery surrounding their father's death.

10. Manifest (TV Series 2018–2023)

Manifest created by Jeff Rake, aired for 6 years, having 4 seasons and 62 episodes. The series features Melissa Roxburgh, Josh Dallas, and J.R. Ramirez in the lead roles and has received accolades, including nominations for Young Artist Awards, Imagen Foundation Awards, and MovieGuide Awards.

After the Montego Air Flight lands safely post a turbulent flight, the crew and passengers are relieved. However, unbeknownst to them, within those few hours, the world has aged five years and their friends, family and colleagues after mourning their loss have all moved on. 

Faced with the impossible, all on board the flight are given a second chance. As their newfound realities unfold deeper mysteries, some of those who have returned realise that they are meant for things greater than they'd ever imagined.

11. The Shannara Chronicles (TV Series 2016–2017)

The Shannara Chronicles faced a fall in ratings, each season's dip highlighting diminishing appeal. Mixed reviews and user ratings added to its unimpressive record.

Guided by Austin Butler, Ivana Baquero, and Manu Bennett, the show unfolded through 2 seasons, and over 2 years, failing to reclaim lost ground.

The Shannara Chronicles follows the storylines that are set out in the novel The Elfstones of Shannara, which is set in the fictional Four Lands. The series opens with demons starting to return after having been banished from this world to a land called Forbidding, which is locked by an ancient tree called Ellcrys.

The series follows the journey of Wil, Eretria and Amberle with guidance from the last druid Allanon, who goes on a quest to protect the Ellcrys from dying and banish the demons back from the Four Lands.

12. Attack on Titan (TV Series 2013–2023)

The journey of Attack on Titan reaches its pinnacle in the season 4 finale. Tetsurô Araki's creation, with its animation-action charm, has evolved since 2013.

With Jessie James Grelle, Bryce Papenbrook, and Yûki Kaji at the helm and across 89 episodes, the final season shines as an exceptional culmination, capturing the essence of the show's success.

Humans are close to being exterminated by giants called Titans, who seem to devour humans simply for pleasure. A small section of humanity is able to survive by walling themselves in a protected land behind really high walls, taller than even the biggest titans. 

In the present day, no human has seen a titan in over 100 years, when young Eren and his friend Mikasa mysteriously witness a titan destroy the city walls. As the two take shelter, Even sees a titan mercilessly devouring his mother, leading him to vow vengeance for all of humanity against all titans.

13. Steins;Gate (TV Series 2011–2015)

Steins;Gate is a fan-favourite title that one should consider if they have an affinity for animation-comedy. This captivating show, created by Hiroshi Hamasaki, features Mamoru Miyano, Asami Imai, and Kana Hanazawa in the lead. The series spans 1 seasons and 25 episodes.

Steins;Gate is set in 2010 in Akihabara, Tokyo and follows the life of Rintaro Okabe, a self-proclaimed 'mad scientist' who runs a laboratory in an apartment along with his friends Mayuri and Itaru. When attending a conference on time travel, Okabe finds the dead body of a neuroscience researcher.

However, when he sends a text about it to Itaru, he discovers that the researcher is alive and the message has arrived before being sent. This pushes the researcher to create a device to send memories through a 'microwave oven' that effectively allows the user to time travel.

14. Legend of the Blue Sea (TV Series 2016–2017)

Legend of the Blue Sea offers viewers a journey across its 1 season and 21 episodes. Since its premiere in 2016, it has provided consistent entertainment for those who appreciate the series' storytelling.

Legend of the Blue Sea follows the love story of Shim Cheong, a mermaid and Heo Joon-Jae, a con artist. It revolves around the concept of rebirth, fate and unrequited love as their tale juxtaposes with the parallel story of their incarnations in the Joseon era, as the mermaid, Se-Hwa and town head, Kim Dam-Ryeong.

15. Travelers (TV Series 2016–2018)

Travelers is a fan-favourite title that one should consider if they have an affinity for drama-mystery. This captivating show, created by Brad Wright, features Eric McCormack, MacKenzie Porter, and Nesta Cooper in the lead. The series spans 3 seasons and 34 episodes.

Hundreds of years into the future, the last surviving humans uncover the means of sending consciousness back through time into people of the 21st century. These Travelers assume the lives of random people while also secretly working as teams to perform missions that will help save humanity from a horrific future.

With only the knowledge of history as their arsenal and an archive of social media profiles, the travellers uncover that 21st-century lives and relationships are as challenging as their high-stakes missions.

16. Tokyo Revengers (TV Series 2021– )

Unnoticed by many, Tokyo Revengers, helmed by Masato Tamagawa, offers a distinct experience. Featuring Griffin Puatu, Darren O'Hare, and Adam McArthur, this production from 2021 may have flown under the radar, but its moderate ratings make it a find for those in search of underrated gems.

Takemichi Hanagaki is a freelancer who has reached the pits of despair in this life. He learns that his girlfriend has been killed by the notorious Tokyo Manji Gang. A day after hearing of her death, he's standing at the train station when some people push him onto the tracks.

Assuming he's about to die, he closes his eyes. However, when he opens his eyes, he sees that he's been transported back in time by 12 years. Takemichi decides to utilise this to get revenge.

#2 Doctor Who

Synopsis:   Doctor Who   follows the trials of an extraterrestrial Time Lord. Known as the Doctor, he/she travels through time to solve problems and battle injustice across the universe.

Using the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimensions in Space) to travel, the Doctor recruits companions to assist him/her. With various incarnations,  Doctor Who  is a sweeping adventure in space and time.

Note: There are many iterations of  Doctor Who . Any would make our list of time travel series. Pick your favorite! The newer Doctors include Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Jodie Whittaker. The new Doctor will be Ncuti Gatwa in 2023.

#5 El Ministerio del Tiempo (The Department of Time)

Synopsis:  A secret government agency recruits three people from different eras to protect Spain’s history.

They bounce through time, chasing time-traveling intruders bent on manipulating history for their own purposes.

#6 Travelers 

Synopsis:  Several hundred years into the future, the last humans discover a way to send their consciousness back in time. These “travelers” assume the lives of random individuals.

With only their knowledge of history and social media profiles to guide their way, the travelers quickly discover that experience in the 21st Century is as challenging as their mission.

Content Warning:  Rated TV-MA, the show has strong language, violence, and implied nudity.

#7 Scarlet Heart / Scarlet Heart: Ryeo

Synopsis of Scarlet Heart : A near-fatal accident sends Zhang Xiao, a 21st Century woman, back in time to the Qing Dynasty. It is Kangxi Emperor’s reign, and Xiao is now the teenage daughter of a Manchu general.

Known as Ma’ertai Roux, Xiao attempts to return to the future. Navigating new relationships and love, Xiao adjusts to her new life until, one day, it disappears.

#8 Making History  

Synopsis:  Misunderstood college facilities manager Dan Chambers discovers time travel, using pop culture to become a beloved 18th Century figure. However, Dan fails to realize the impact time travel has on the present.

When Dan causes Paul Revere to delay his famous ride, he alters the events of the American Revolution. Dan then recruits well-liked history professor Chris Parish for help in correcting history.

#9 Sleepy Hollow  

Synopsis:  Ichabod Crane comes back to life 250 years in the future, where he must solve a mystery going back to the time of the founding fathers.

However, he is not alone. Due to a blood curse, the headless horseman also returns to the living. The headless horseman begins a slaying spree in present-day Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod realizes that the headless horseman is the first of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse.

Enter Detective Abbie Mills. Familiar with the supernatural, Abbie joins forces with Crane to stop the evil infecting Sleepy Hollow.

#10 Torchwood

Synopsis:  Former time agent, Captain Jack Harkness, leads the Torchwood Three to investigate unexplained extraterrestrial events on Earth.

The group, part of a covert agency called the Torchwood Institute, battles supernatural threats outside the protection of the British government and law enforcement.

Content Warning:  The series is TV-MA for strong language in a few episodes. It also includes occasional explicit sensuality, suggestive content, and violence.

#11 Being Erica *

Synopsis:  During therapy, Erica Strange shares her list of regrets with her therapist. In a twist in treatment, Erica goes back in time to those moments with a chance to make different decisions.

Faced with rewriting her past or leaving things as they are, Erica faces each moment with humor and a new appreciation for her choices.

#13 The Librarians * 

Synopsis:  Based on popular TV movies,  The Librarians  are a group of people who protect magical items throughout time.

Consisting of an art historian, a thief, a mathematician, and a warrior, they travel through time to find supernatural objects and bring them under the protection of the Library.

#14 Early Edition *

Synopsis:  Having lost his job and his marriage, Gary Hobson wakes up one morning to find a cat sitting on a newspaper bearing the next day’s date.

Gary quickly learns that this early edition allows him 24 hours to try and save many people’s lives.

Where to Watch:  All seasons are available for DVD purchase on Amazon Prime.

*This one is an outlier when it comes to time travel TV shows. The only thing that travels in time is the newspaper. Still, it’s Kyle Chandler….. swoon!

#15 Erased 

Synopsis:  Satoru goes back 18 years to prevent the passing of his mother and three classmates.

#16 Outlander

Synopsis:  British Army Nurse Claire Randall is on her second honeymoon and looking forward to a career as an Oxford historian. Suddenly transported back to 1742, Claire finds her freedom and life are in danger.

#17 The Eternal Love 

Synopsis:  Unhappy with a forced marriage, Qu Tan Er attempts to end her life. She awakens from her failed attempt with the spirit of another woman inside her body. The modern Xiao Tan is Tan Er’s opposite.

Stuck in the past world, she cannot return to the present day. Whenever one of the women lies, the other person takes control. Soon, complications in love arise as the differing women fall in love with two different men.

What will become of the foursome? And will Xiao Tan be able to find her way back to her own time?

#18 Lost in Austen *

Synopsis:  This smart take on Jane Austen’s  Pride and Prejudice  finds modern, working girl Amanda Price trading places with Elizabeth Bennet.

Unable to return to her time, Amanda must try her best to fit in among the Bennets, Bingleys, and Darcys. Yet, her presence in the lives of these beloved characters sets changes to the course of the classic tale.

#19 Continuum 

Synopsis:  Detective Kiera Cameron, a cop from the year 2077, and a group of dangerous criminals called Liber8 are trapped in present-day Vancouver. Kiera must stop Liber8 before they destroy the corporate world, altering the future as she knows it. She enlists the help of tech genius Alec Sadler to find a way back home.

In the meantime, Kiera takes a job with the Vancouver Police Department. With help from her partner, detective Carlos Fonnegra, they keep tabs on Liber8. Different beliefs and backgrounds lead to suspicion, but slowly, Kiera and Carlos learn to trust each other.

#20 Frequency

Synopsis:  Detective Raimy Sullivan has lived with the pain and resentment of her father’s passing for 20 years. She believes her father, NYPD Officer Frank Sullivan, was corrupt, resulting in his passing. However, everything changes when she hears his voice coming from an old ham radio.

With Raimy’s warning in his ears, Frank survives the attempt on his life. Yet, the change in the past ends in tragedy for the future. Separated by time, connected by an old radio, the two detectives work together to find a way to rewrite the past without losing the ones they love.

Synopsis:  CIA Agent Frank Parker receives a special assignment from the NSA. He must travel back in time to prevent current-day catastrophes.

• #23: * THE 4400  (2004; 2021) – We recommend the original series over the reboot. Both shows have 4400 people appearing in the present day from different time periods, not having aged a day since they originally disappeared.
• #24: * AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.   (2013) – The later seasons of this fun Marvel series are all about time travel – and they are marvelous! The love story  between Daisy and Daniel Sousa  is perfect.
• #25:  ALCATRAZ  (2012) – Prisoners from Alcatraz disappeared in 1963 – only to reappear in the present day. The short-lived drama lasted only one season.
• #26:  ALICE  (2022) – A new time travel romance TV series on Kocowa and Viki.
• #27:  ALWAYS A WITCH  (2019) – A time-traveling witch in this Colombian series ends up in the present day.
• #28: * CHARMED (1998; 2018) – The original and new series about three sisters (and witches) include time travel episodes. Both shows are entertaining – but the original is superior.
• #29:  THE CROSSING  (2018) – Refugees from the future travel back in time to seek asylum.
• #30:  DARK  (2017) (TV-MA) – The German sci-fi thriller series deals with a time travel conspiracy in this hugely popular Netflix drama.

• #41:  LA BREA  (2021) – A sinkhole in Los Angeles sends a group of people to an ancient world. Soon, a family becomes enmeshed in a time-travel conspiracy. It’s super fun (if illogical) and crazy – especially by Season 2.
• #42:  LEGION  (2017) (TV-MA) – Dan Stevens stars in this bizarre Marvel series about a man with abilities. Time travel becomes a significant element in Season 3.
• #43: * LIFE ON MARS/ASHES TO ASHES  (2006; 2008) (TV-MA – mild) – DCI Sam Tyler wakes up in 1973 after being in a car accident. The spinoff series  Ashes to Ashes  is about another Detective who wakes up in 1981.
• #44:  LIVE UP TO YOUR NAME (2017) – It’s a rom-com time travel K-drama series about a Joseon doctor transported into the present day.
• #45: * LOST  (2004) – Survivors of a plane disaster discover they’re stranded on a mysterious island. Time travel plays an essential role in the  brilliant romantic series .
• #46: * LOKI  (2021) – Loki ends up at the Time Variance Authority – agents who stop time variants and monitor the timeline. Loki soon must fight for his survival as he travels through time.
• #47: * MANIFEST (2018) – The mystery genre series begins when a missing airplane reappears five years later – and no one has aged.
• #48:  MY ONLY LOVE SONG (2017) – An actress time travels to the past in a magical van in this historical fantasy romance show.
• #49:  NINE: NINE TIMES TIME TRAVEL  (2013) – A TV anchorman tries to change his past in this romantic K-drama.

This is a great list! I love the Korean drama Time Travel series. My favorites are Faith, Rooftop Prince, I love Lee Tae Ri, Signal and Tunnel.

Have you ever seen “Voyagers!”? It was like a predecessor to Quantum Leap and lasted 1 season on NBC. It stared one of the most beautiful men to ever grace television, the late Jon-Erik Hexum. He’s a roguish time-traveling pirate, Phineas Bogg, a Voyager that travels throughout time with a smart young boy and they have to fix moments where history’s gone wrong. It was a fun show. It’s definitely binge-worthy and Hexum was such a charming young actor. Although it was made with kids and education in mind, (Co-Produced by Scholastic) there’s plenty of romantic moments for Bogg!

He and Meeno Peluce (the boy, Jeffrey Jones) made a great team. I run a fansite and FB page for the series. You can watch it on Amazon Prime, and it’s currently free on NBC.com.

I own the series and I was heartbroken when Jon died. I recently bought the 30 episode tv show from the 60’s The Time Tunnel…. Now this was where most time travel shows spawned from. Especially Quantum Leap.

Nice list! Back to the Future made me a sucker for time travel plots. So would the cartoon count as one?

Maybe you guys can help me….. I’m looking for a series perhaps a movie….. not sure. only saw a piece of it and have been searching ever since. I even looked trough all the male actors to cross reference, nothing. It seem to involve time travel an attempt to shift history. Almost achieve the goal by manipulating the son of the leader – I know its horribly vague…. but he ends up speaking to his son. He explains the situation from a watchmakers point of view- His hobby is watchmaking….the comparison he draws between ‘leading’ or directing humans where they need to be is similar to the watchmaker making a clock. its been almost two years…. but so far no luck finding this series. Help 🙂

How could you not have Netflix’s Dark on this list?

I agree. Dark is a pretty good series (3 seasons on Netflix). It’s a German show so you have to up with English lip syncing, but once you get used to it, it’s a good show.

Continuum seems to be right on the money as we see a few corporations [e.g., Amazon] displacing small business, and taking over government. Science Fiction frequently becomes Science.

Netflix’s DARK is the best Time Travel show ever made. Never believe anything else!

Timeslip UK kids show from 60`s predates all these and deals with past , future, global cooling(remember that) and cloning.

It’s a indian movie named Time

Brødrene Dal og Spektralsteinene and Brødrene Dal og Mysteriet om Karl XIIs Gamasjer both have time travel as a key element. I prefer the former but both are pretty well planned out, although only the latter seems to remember concequences.

I like some others am trying to find a “Time Travel” movie that’s kind of like “If Only” Where a mans’ wife (Possibly Girlfriend) is killed in an auto accident an he keeps traveling back to that time to make her avoid it. He finds every time that it is avoided she is killed in another way. After so many attempts he goes back and gets in the car with her and they both die. So sort of like “If Only “ and sort of like the first part of “The Time Machine”(2002). I think the movie time-line was between 1970 and 2000 only guessing. I didn’t see the start of the movie. Always wanted to see it but the same accident happens or is averted only to have a new death.

जब अल्बर्ट आइंस्टीन ने थ्योरी ऑफ़ रिलेटिविटी यानी सापेक्षतावाद का सिध्दांत प्रकाशित किया तो उसी सिध्दांत के आधार पर टाइम ट्रेवल की कल्पना की जाने लगी। आइंस्टीन के थ्योरी ऑफ़ रिलेटिविटी सिध्दांत के प्रकाशित होने से पहले लोगों में केवल एक ही अवधारणा थी कि ब्रह्माण्ड में समय की गति हर जगह वही है जो पृथ्वी पर होती है!

उनका मानना था की समय जिस रफ़्तार से पृथ्वी पर गुजर रहा है उसी प्रकार ब्रह्माण्ड में दूर कही किसी दूसरे ग्रह पर भी समय इसी रफ़्तार से गुजर रहा होगा ! लेकिन आइंस्टीन ने लोगों की इस अवधारणा को गलत साबित कर समय की एक अलग परिभाषा दी !

अल्बर्ट आइंस्टीन ने बताया कि समय और अंतरिक्ष एक दूसरे से जुड़े हुए हैं ! जिसे Space Time कहते हैं ! समय एक 4th डायमेंशन यानी चौथा आयाम है और समय की गति को धीमा या तेज किया जा सकता है।

इंग्लैंड के मशहूर लेखक हर्बट जार्ज वेल्स ने 1895 में ‘द टाइम मशीन’ नामक एक उपन्यास प्रकाशित किया, तो समूचे युरोप में तहलका मच गया। इस उपन्यास में वेल्स ने ‘टाइम मशीन’ की अद्भुत कल्पना की। हालांकि वेल्स के उपन्यास में व्यावहारिक रूप से कई विसंगतियां है।

अगर वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोण से देखा जाए तो समय यात्रा संभव है। अगर देखा जाए तो हम सभी समय में यात्रा कर रहे हैं। हम सभी भूतकाल से निकल कर वर्तमान में होते हुए लगातार भविष्य की ओर बढ़ते चले जा रहे हैं और इसी को ही समय यात्रा कहते हैं। हमारी समय में यात्रा की दर 1 घंटे प्रति घंटे की दर से है यानी की हमें भविष्य में 1 घंटा आगे जाने के लिए 1 घंटे का ही समय अंतराल लगेगा । अगर हमने इस दर को 1 घंटे प्रति घंटे की दर से अधिक कर दिया तो समय की यात्रा की जा सकती है।

आइंस्टीन ने अपने विशेष सापेक्षता के सिद्धांत में बताया कि समय यात्रा संभव है। आइंस्टीन ने बताया कि अगर कोई वस्तु जितनी ज्यादा तेजी से चलेगी उसके लिए समय उतना ही धीमा होता जाएगा और वस्तु किसी स्थिर पर्यवेक्षक के सापेक्ष भविष्य मे होगी।

ऐसे कहा जाता है कि भविष्य की यात्रा करना संभव है परंतु भूतकाल की यात्रा करना किसी भी प्रकार से तर्कसंगत प्रतीत नहीं होता है। स्टीफन हॉकिंस ने बताया कि अगर भूतकाल यात्रा संभव भी है, और अगर हम टाइम मशीन भविष्य में बना भीं पाए तो टाइम मशीन के बनाने के समय से पहले की यात्रा संभव नहीं है।

समय यात्रा के 5 तरीके (5 ways of time travel in hindi):

1. स्पीड (speed).

यह भविष्य में जाने का सबसे आसान और सबसे व्यावहारिक तरीका है।

आइंस्टीन के विशेष सापेक्षता के सिद्धांत के अनुसार, जब हम प्रकाश की गति के निकट गति पर यात्रा करते हैं, तो बाहरी दुनिया के सापेक्ष हमारे लिए समय धीमा हो जाता है। इसे ‘समय फैलाव’ (Time dilation) कहते हैं।

यह सिर्फ एक अनुमान या विचार नहीं है – इसे मापा गया है। दो परमाणु घड़ियों (एक जेट विमान में उड़ने वाला तथा एक पृथ्वी पर  स्थिर) का उपयोग करके भौतिकविदों ने बताया है कि जेट की गति की वजह से उसमें रखी घड़ी धीमी गति से चलती है।

2. गुरुत्व (Gravity)

यह विधि भी आइंस्टीन ने ही दी है। सामान्य सापेक्षता के सिद्धांत के मुताबिक, जितना मजबूत गुरुत्वाकर्षण लगता है, समय उतना ही धीमा चलता है।

जैसे ही आप पृथ्वी के केंद्र के करीब आते हैं, गुरुत्वाकर्षण की शक्ति बढ़ जाती है। उदाहरण के लिए,हमारे सिर के मुकाबले हमारे पैरों के लिए समय धीमा हो जाता है।

फिर, इस प्रभाव को मापा भी गया है। 2010 में, यूएस नेशनल इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ स्टैंडर्ड एंड टेक्नोलॉजी (एनआईएसटी) के भौतिकविदों ने शेल्फ (shelves) पर दो परमाणु घड़ियों को रखा, जो एक दूसरे से 33 सेंटीमीटर ऊपर थी, और टिकिंग की दर (rate of ticking) में अंतर को मापा और पाया कि निचली घडी थोड़ा धीमी हो गयी है क्योंकि यह थोड़ा मजबूत गुरुत्वाकर्षण महसूस करती है।

अतः स्पष्ट है कि भविष्य में यात्रा करने के लिए हमें अत्यंत ही मजबूत गुरुत्वाकर्षण क्षेत्र की आवश्यकता होगी जैसा कि ब्लैक होल में होता है।

3. निलंबित एनीमेशन (suspended animation):

जब हम किसी को निलंबित एनीमेशन की स्थिति में कहते हैं, तो हमारा मतलब है कि वे निष्क्रिय हैं और कुछ भी नहीं कर रहे हैं।

भविष्य में यात्रा करने का यह एक और तरीका हो सकता है कि हम समय की अपनी धारणा (perception) को धीमा कर दें, या अपनी शारीरिक प्रक्रियाओं को रोक दें और बाद में उन्हें पुन: आरम्भ करें।

बैक्टीरियल स्पायर्स (spores) निलंबित एनीमेशन की स्थिति में लाखों सालों तक जीवित रह सकते हैं, जब तक कि तापमान, नमी की सही स्थिति फिर से उनके मेटाबोलिस्म को शुरू नहीं करती। भालू और गिलहरी जैसे कुछ स्तनधारी हाइबरनेशन के दौरान अपने मेटाबोलिस्म को धीमा कर सकते हैं और भोजन एवं ऑक्सीजन की अपने कोशिकाओं की आवश्यकता को कम कर सकते हैं।

क्या मनुष्य कभी भी ऐसा कर सकता है?

यद्यपि पूरी तरह से मेटाबोलिस्म को रोकने से हमारी वर्तमान तकनीक से काफी दूर है, कुछ वैज्ञानिक कम से कम कुछ घंटों तक चलने वाले अल्पकालिक हाइबरनेशन अवस्था को प्राप्त करने की दिशा में काम कर रहे हैं।

2005 में, अमेरिकी वैज्ञानिकों ने हाइबरोजेन सल्फाइड की अल्प खुराक देकर चूहों के मेटाबोलिस्म को धीमा करने का एक तरीका बताया तथा 6 घंटे बाद बिना किसी दूसरे दुष्प्रभाव के उनकी प्रक्रियाओं को पुनः आरंभ किया। दुर्भाग्य से, भेड़ और सूअरों पर भी इसी तरह के प्रयोग सफल नहीं थे, सुझाव दिया कि यह विधि बड़े जानवरों के लिए काम नहीं कर सकती है।

4. वार्म होल्स (warm holes):

सामान्य सापेक्षता सिद्धांत, स्पेस-टाइम के माध्यम से किसी शॉर्टकट की संभावना को भी मान्यता प्रदान करता है, जिसे वार्म होल्स के नाम से जाना जाता है। ये एक अरब प्रकाश वर्ष या उससे अधिक की दूरी के बीच या समय के विभिन्न बिंदुओं के बीच पुल का कार्य करने में सक्षम हो सकता है।

5. प्रकाश का प्रयोग करके (using light):

एक और विचार,अमेरिकी भौतिक विज्ञानी रॉन मैलेट द्वारा रखा गया और यह था, “स्पेस-टाइम को मोड़ने के लिए प्रकाश के घूर्णन सिलेंडर (rotating cylinder of light)का उपयोग”।

मैलेट के अनुसार, सही ज्यामिति (geometry) अतीत या भविष्य में जाने का कारण बन सकती है।

उसकी वेषभूषा वहाके सभी लोगो से भिन्न थी, क्यूँ के उस व्यक्ति ने १८०० सदी के कपड़े पहने थे। और वो व्यक्ति भी आस पास का माहौल देख कर हैरान और परेशान हो जाता है। और घबरा जाता है, मानो जैसे उसे लग रहा हो की वो किसी अलग ही दुनिया में आया है। इसी बिच वो कुछ समझ पाये तब उसकी वोर तेजी से एक टैक्सी आती है और उसकी उस दुर्घटना में मौत हो जाती है।

फिर उसकी लाश को पोस्टमार्टम के लिए मुर्दाघर ले जाया जाता है, और जब उसके सभी चीजों की तलाशी ली गई तब उसके पास से बहुत ही आश्चर्य चकित कर देने वाली चीजें मिली थी.

उन चीजों में तांबेका एक टोकन था, एक बिल जिसपर घोड़े के तबेले का पता और नाम लिखा था , एक बिज़नेस कार्ड था जिसपर "Rudolf Fenz" नाम लिखा था, और उसपर "Fifth Ave" इस प्रकार का पता था। और उसके पास से ७० डॉलर के पुराने नोट थे जो एकदम नए लग रहे थे और एक खत था जिसपर १८७६ का स्टैम्प लगा था।

ये सभी चीजें पुरानी हो कर भी बिलकुल नये लग रहे थे। और उस व्यक्ति की उमर लगभग २७ से ३० साल के बिच थी। ये सभी रहस्यमय चीजों को देख कर वहा के सभी पुलिस अधिकारी हैरान और परेशान हो जाते है।

तो फिर न्यू यॉर्क पुलिस ने इस केस के इनव्हेस्टिगेशन के लिए "कैप्टन रिम" को चुना, जो न्यू यॉर्क पुलिस में मिसिंग पर्सन डिपार्टमेंट में काम करते थे, और फिर कैप्टन रिम अपने काम में जल्द से जल्द लग गए, 

उन्होंने उस बिल और टोकन के अनुसार तबेले और सलून की खोज करनी शुरू कर दी, पर ऐसी जगह उन्हें नहीं मिली फिर उन्होंने वहाके बड़े बुजुर्ग व्यक्ति वो से बातचीत की, उनको भी उस जगह के बारे मे मालूम नहीं था।

पर उस बिज़नेस कार्ड से जो पता मिला वहा पर "Fifth Ave" का एक ऑफ़िस था, पर वहा कोई भी रुडोल्फ फिंज नाम के व्यक्ति को नहीं जनता था। अब उसके पास मिले बिज़नेस कार्ड से ही उसे "Rudolf Fenz" नाम से ही जाना जाने लगा।

फिर कुछ दिनों बाद कैप्टन रिम को एक टेलीफ़ोन डायरी में एक नाम दिखा वो था "रुडोल्फ फिंज जुनिअर" और ये टेलीफ़ोन डायरी १९३९ की थी, तो फिर कैप्टन रिम जल्द से जल्द उस पते पर गए, पर वहा जाके पता चला की रुडोल्फ फिंज जुनिअर की मौत पांच साल पहले हो चुकी है।

मगर उसकी विधवा पत्नी "फ्लोरिडा" में रहती है। उनके पत्नी का पता मिलने के बाद कैप्टन रिम उनसे मिलने गए, तो फिर रुडोल्फ फिज़ जुनिअर के पत्नी ने जो बाते बताई वो बहुत ही चौकादेने वाली थी।

विधवा पत्नी ने उन्हें बताया की, "रुडोल्फ फिंज सिनिअर" ये व्यक्ति "रुडोल्फ फिंज जुनिअर" के पिता है , और वो २९ साल की उम्र में १८७६ में अचानक ग़ायब हो गए थे।

उस विधवा पत्नी ने बताया की, एक दिन शाम को वो सड़क पर घूमने गए थे उसके बाद नाही ही वो घर वापस आये और नाही उनको तबसे किसी ने देखा, इसकी पुलिस कमप्लेंट भी तब की थी।

ये पूरी बाते सुनकर कैप्टन रिम बहुत ही हैरान और परेशान हो गए , फिर उन्होंने १८७६ की लापता लोगो की पुलिस फाइल देखी तो उन्हें विश्वास हो गया की, विधवा पत्नी ने जो बाते बताई वो सब सच थी।

उस फाइल में जिस व्यक्ति का हुलिया और वेषभूषा का वर्णन किया था, ठीक उसी तरह उस व्यक्ति से मेल खा रहा था जिसकी उस सड़क हादसे में मौत हो गई थी।

इससे ये निष्कर्ष निकलता है की, "Rudolf Fenz" ये व्यक्ति अचानक टाइम ट्रॅव्हल करके अपने समय से ७५ साल आगे भविष्य में आ गए थे, पर दुर्भाग्यवश वो कुछ समझ पाए उनकी उस सड़क हादसे में मौत हो जाती है।

ये अब तक की सबसे बड़ी समय यात्रा की घटना मानी जाती है। और तबसे "Rudolf Fenz" को एक टाइम ट्रैव्हलर माना जाता है, जो अपने समय से अचानक टाइम ट्रॅव्हल करके भविष्य में ७५ साल आगे आ जाता है।
