Places to Play

PGA Tour stops in each state you can play

tour courses pga

Unlike other professional sports where the fields of play are reserved for competitors only, many of professional golf’s annual stops are open to the public. There is a certain intrigue to playing the same courses that the best players in the world tackle—trying to replicate the shots that produced dramatic triumphs on the biggest stage.

During its 2021-22 season, the PGA Tour will travel to private and public tracks across 22 different states. This collection includes the 21 courses across nine states that will host a PGA Tour event this season and are open for public play.

TPC Scottsdale (Stadium)

tpc-scottsdale-stadium-fourteenth-hole-12552

Even after the WMPO is complete, the facility leaves up the giant grandstands surrounding the par-3 16th, so public golfers can get a taste of the experience—minus the 20,000 rowdy fans. The Stadium course features challenging greens and culminates with a memorable finishing stretch.

Weaving through the majestic Monterey pines through the middle of the round, and the giant sand dunes on the first five holes, Spyglass Hill—ranked No. 51 on our latest ranking of America’s 100 Greatest—might be Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s best work.

Tahoe Mountain Club (Old Greenwood)

Since 2020, the Old Greenwood course at Tahoe Mountain Club has hosted the Barracuda Championship on the PGA Tour. This Jack Nicklaus design plays among 600 acres of towering pines in the High Sierras.

The feeling is incomparable, and it’s one we think more golfers should experience!

tour courses pga

To get you started, here are our picks of the best PGA TOUR courses you can (and should!) play:

PGA Tour courses you can (and should) play

  • Pebble Beach
  • TPC Sawgrass – Stadium Course
  • Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill
  • Torrey Pines – South
  • Harbour Town
  • PGA National – Champion
  • Innisbrook Resort – Copperhead

Pebble Beach Golf Links (AT&T Pro-Am, U.S. Open, PGA Championship)

tour courses pga

Early morning light on the par-4 8th hole at Pebble Beach Golf Links on the Monterey Peninsula.

One of the most recognizable golf courses in the world, Pebble Beach Golf Links is the definition of a bucket golf course. Golfers will play iconic holes like the par-3 7th to the stunning par-5 18th. Enjoy great views of the Pacific Ocean as you play amongst the clifftop fairways and make memories that will last a lifetime when you play this PGA TOUR and major championship course.

TPC Sawgrass – Stadium Course ( THE PLAYERS Championship )

tour courses pga

Home to arguably the most famous par 3 in golf, the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass is a top bucket-list course designed by Pete and Alice Dye. A challenging layout awaits that will test all facets of your game, especially shot shaping and course management. Subtle elevation changes, undulating greens, and unique bunkering add a degree of difficulty that stump even the best players in the world. Not to mention one of the best finishing stretches in golf with the long par-5 16th, the iconic 17th hole island green, and the testy par-4 18th.

Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill   (Arnold Palmer Invitational)

tour courses pga

A course fit for “The King” is what you will experience when you visit Orlando and play Bay Hill’s Championship Course . This classic Florida layout offers generous landing areas off the tee with few trees, but bunkers guard the greens and large ponds will make you rethink your shot choices. The course is only available for members and guests staying at The Lodge , so a stay is required to play this stunning course. But with year-round sunshine and pristine course conditions, it is never a bad time to visit Bay Hill!

Torrey Pines – South  (Farmers Insurance Open, U.S. Open)

tour courses pga

Another California clifftop course that should be on your bucket list is the South Course at Torrey Pines . Located just north of San Diego , this annual PGA TOUR stop has also hosted two U.S. Opens, which adds to the allure of the property. Narrow fairways and tall rough combined with amazing views of the Pacific Ocean and the California coastline make for an unforgettable round of golf. Large bunkers and elevation changes add to the challenge of the course, but the moderately sized greens offer golfers some respite. Who would’ve thought that a municipal course could be so exciting?

Harbour Town ( RBC Heritage )

Hole 18 Harbour Town

Most recognized by the famous red and white striped lighthouse behind the 18th green, Harbour Town is the brainchild of Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus on Hilton Head Island , South Carolina . While the course is relatively short for a PGA TOUR event, the challenging design offsets length for accuracy with the narrow fairways framed by overhanging trees making it a shot makers course. A majority of the course winds through the wooded and sandy terrain before looping back towards the coastline with the final two finishing holes playing along the water.

PGA National – Champion Course (Honda Classic, Ryder Cup , PGA Championship)

With the prominent golf tournaments this course has held, it is hard to leave it off the list. A fantastic Jack Nicklaus design, the Champions Course at PGA National is also home to a famous stretch of golf holes called “The Bear Trap.” The fairways and greens are player-friendly while the bunkers and water hazards are the course’s biggest defense. You will enjoy a 5-star experience and feel like a professional when you visit PGA National’s Champion Course .

Innisbrook Resort – Copperhead Course (Valspar Championship)

tour courses pga

At more than 7,200 yards the Copperhead Course is the most recognizable of Innisbrook’s four Tampa, Florida courses and plays host to the PGA TOUR’s Valspar Championship.

One of the more under-the-radar courses on Tour, the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort still offers a challenge even to the pros. Designed by Lawrence Packard, the course, while not heavily wooded, requires accuracy with tight fairways, strategically placed bunkers, especially around the greens, and a decent amount of water hazards that come into play. As you head towards the clubhouse, you will encounter “The Snake Pit;” a collection of the most difficult finishing holes on the PGA TOUR.

I have not had the pleasure of playing any of these courses, but I have played a US OPEN course in NY. Bethpage black is an amazing course. I must have played it 100 times when I was younger, and it was quite a challenge. I also remember paying 3 dollars during the week and 4 dollars on the weekend. I assure you it is no longer cheap, but it is well worth the challenge. And, it is quite a challenge.

Play Torrey Pines North before playing the South. I’ve played both dozens of times living in Del Mar during the Winter. Tom Weiskopf made the North into a gem that any local and vacationer will enjoy. All the South is is long and Rees Jones is the most boring modern architect. Play the South once to get beat up. But if time and money are precious, the North is more worth it.

Just played Pebble Beach this last Friday. It was the greatest walk and course I have had the chance to play. I walked and got a chance to walk along the coastline and stand where Speith almost went off the cliff (lol). It costs a few bucks to play, but it is something that I will remember for life. My wife walked with me and she loved it also. Ate at The Bench after walking off 18. It was pretty special.

A week of southern USA golf with a gambler’s flair, concluded on Sunday. The Augusta National Women’s Amateur and the national Drive, Chip, and Putt finals were celebrated in Augusta, Georgia. The LPGA offered its version of the OK Corral with the annual match-play event in Las Vegas. The Korn Ferry Tour gathered in Savannah, Georgia, for the Club Car Championship. Finally, the PGA Tour offered a final opportunity to qualify for this week’s Masters tournament, at the Texas Open.

In order to run something down, you have to be faster. Luckily for me, I took typing in school. Let’s run down a bunch of events this week, beginning in Augusta.

Augusta National Women’s Amateur: Woad wins

The ANWA begins play each year with 36 holes at Champions Retreat golf club, north of Augusta and adjacent to the Savannah river. A cut is made, and the finalists move to the storied Augusta National golf club two days later, for the third round. On Friday, every golfer in the field has the opportunity to play a practice round at ANGC, cut made or not. It’s a nice touch that sweetens the week for golfers like Carolina Lopez-Chacarra, who has missed the cut by one shot, each of the last two years.

Sweden’s Ingrid Lindblad is currently the most successful contestant in ANWA history. The LSU all-america golfer has thrice finished inside the top three at Augusta National. This year, she posted minus-four to claim solo third position. Ahead of her was Bailey Shoemaker, a former New Yorker who now lives in Florida, and is bound for the University of Southern California. Shoemaker posted six birdies against zero bogies on day three, for a dream score of 66. She moved from one-under par to the top of the leader board, at seven deep.

As the golfers with leads began to lose their way, Shoemaker’s position looked better by the minute. Even the overnight leader, Lottie Woad of England and Florida State University, began to stumble. Her bogey at the par-five 13th dropped her two shots behind Shoemaker. It was then that magic returned to the National. Woad secured a birdie with a 15-feet putt at the long 15th, to move within one of the leader. After a par at the 16th, Woad faced the uphill climb of the final two holes.

At 17, Woad ripped a long drive up fairway center, then finessed a wedge to 15 feet, and holed the putt for a three. At the home hole, she was long with her approach, and faced a downhill putt from … you guessed it, just about 15 feet for the victory. As the putt turned left, into the center of the hole, the magnitude of what Woad had done began to sink in. Three-under par over the closing four holes takes a special something, and all Bailey Shoemaker could do, was smile and acknowledge Woad’s work.

PGA Tour @ Texas Open: AB takes down DMC for second Tour title

It’s a good thing that Akshay Bhatia was paired with Denny McCarthy on day four, else he might not have believed what transpired. There was AB, with a four-shot advantage after 54 holes, targeting a second triumph and a Masters invitation. There was McCarthy, attempting to break through for his own, maiden Tour title. After nine holes on Sunday, the lead had swelled to six shots. At that point, the Silver Streak rolled into town.

Bhatia played a decent back nine, overcoming a bogey at ten with three other birdies. And he got annihilated by McCarthy. The 2015 Porter Cup champion made but one par on the inward half, at the 11th. He wrote “birdie” on the other eight holes, closed in 28 (eight under for the nine) and tied Bhatia at 20-under par. Rory McIlroy probably felt good about his 66, which moved him to third position, but he could only claim the “A” Flight on this day. He was nine shots back of the playoff.

As for the playoff, it was an anticlimax. Moments after making birdie at the par-five closer, McCarthy could not repeat his sucess. Despite a celebratory shoulder injury, Bhatia did make four, and the tournament and Masters invitation were his.

LPGA @ T-Mobile Match Play: No JK; NK has four straight

If it looks like stroke play, and smells like stroke play, it just might be match play. The LPGA took a page from the Western Amateur script this year. Three rounds of stroke play took place from Wednesday to Friday, as the field was trimmed to 65, and then to 8. The great eight then went head to head to decide who moved on and who went home. Four golfers tied for the eighth position, and three holes later, Moriya Jutanugarn had defeated Yuka Saso, Brooke Henderson, and Hae Ran Ryu for the right to move into match play.

Leona Maguire had been the queen of Shadow Creek, site of the event, and she preserved that royal title with a 4 & 3 win over Jutanugarn in round one of knockout play. Joining her in the semifinals were Sei Young Kim (6 & 5 over Rose Zhang), Narin An (1 up over Minami Katsu) and Nelly Korda (3 & 2 over Angel Yin.) The penultimate round saw Maguire (3 &2) and Korda (4 & 3) emerge triumphant, creating a dream conclusion pitting two of the top young talents.

Proponents of match play point to the elimination of all other competitors save  the one . Medal-play aficionados reply by saying  shoot a number and let the chips and putts fall where they may. On this day, Leona Maguire posted plus-two through the fifteen holes of the match, while Nelly Korda played the sequence in three below par, It doesn’t matter which style of competition you prefer. A five-shot difference tells you all that you need to know, about who played better that day.

On the occasion of her fourth consecutive victory on the LPGA circuit, Nelly Korda is the best player of this day, this week, this month. What a run.

Korn Ferry Tour @ Club Car Championship: Fisk takes risk and wins in Savannah

Philip Knowles and Kevin Roy each had thoughts on a first-time win on the KFT this week, but their hopes and dreams were postponed. Knowles dropped back from 1st to 3rd with a final-round 71. He tied John Pak and Max McGreevey at 12-deep, two shots behind the first-place tie. Roy posted 72 and finished one shot farther back, in a tie for sixth at minus-eleven. The spotlit stage for overtime was occupied by Rob Oppenheim and Steven Fisk. Fisk closed with 68, moving up two shots in the process. Oppenheim went one better, finishing off a day-four 67 with a jittery 36 on the inward half.

Oppenheim turned in 31 shots on Sunday, and looked for all the world to be on his way to a convincing victory. Nerves and jitters got in the way, and he matched bogeys and birdies on the way home for minus-14. In the playoff, Steven Fisk was able to negotiate par from the final hole at The Landings, and it was enough to earn the title. Oppenheim’s bogey-six relegated him to a coveted, but frustrating, second-place finish. And for those not in the know, it was Fisk who earned the breakthrough, initial victory on the KFT.

It doesn’t get more clutch than this ? Georgia local Steven Fisk chips it within inches to make a tap-in birdie on his last and join Rob Oppenheim at the top of the leaderboard. pic.twitter.com/gGF1ZD5f54 — Korn Ferry Tour (@KornFerryTour) April 7, 2024

Over the years, it’s been held at a variety of courses across the Lone Star State, but it’s found its home at TPC San Antonio in recent years. Some of the biggest names in golf have taken home the title here, including Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Lee Trevino, and Ben Crenshaw.

GolfWRX has its usual assortment of general galleries, WITBs and special pull-out albums. As always, we’ll continue to update the links below as more photos come in from TPC San Antonio.

The 10 hardest and 10 easiest courses on the PGA Tour in 2020-2021

tour courses pga

Of the 48 or 49 courses the PGA Tour plays most years, there are some that stand out as the hardest, most difficult, by far. More often than not, many of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour come from major championship host venues. And while many believe Augusta National plays easy relative to par, compared to some of the other major courses, it turns out to be one of the hardest.

Then there are the easiest courses on the PGA Tour, excluding the majors which rotate.

So, what are the hardest courses on the PGA Tour? And, by extension, which are the easiest courses on the PGA Tour? Let's take a look by the numbers.

Hardest courses on the PGA Tour

These are the 10 toughest courses on the PGA Tour in 2020, with a limited schedule, based on average number of strokes against par:

  • Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Arnold Palmer Invitational, par 72, 7454 yards, 2.106 strokes over par
  • Muirfield Village GC, the Memorial Tournament, par 72, 7392 yards, 2.007 strokes over par
  • PGA National (Champion), The Honda Classic, par 70, 7125 yards, 1.940 strokes over par
  • Olympia Fields CC (North), BMW Championship, par 70, 7366 yards, 1.815 strokes over par
  • Spyglass Hill GC, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, par 72, 7035 yards, 0.877 strokes over par
  • TPC Harding Park, PGA Championship, par 70, 7251 yards, 0.755 strokes over par
  • Torrey Pines GC (South), Farmers Insurance Open, par 72, 7765 yards, 0.534 strokes over par
  • Pebble Beach GL, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, par 72, 6816 yards, 0.516 strokes over par
  • Waialae CC, Sony Open in Hawaii, par 70, 7044 yards, 0.5133 strokes over par
  • Riviera CC, Genesis Invitational, par 71, 7322 yards, 0.255 strokes over par

For each of the last five years, the hardest course on the PGA Tour by scoring average had been the U.S. Open host course that year. However, last year, Bethpage Black was toughest in the PGA Championship.

Looking at the courses that appear in the top 10 most frequently, here are the toughest regular PGA Tour courses based on their combined strokes over par:

  • Torrey Pines (South), Farmers Insurance Open
  • TPC San Antonio (Oaks), Valero Texas Open
  • PGA National (Champion), The Honda Classic
  • Innisbrook (Copperhead), Valspar Championship
  • Harbour Town Golf Links, RBC Heritage
  • Firestone C.C. (South), WGC-Bridgestone Invitational
  • Riviera Country Club, Genesis Invitational
  • TPC Southwind, WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational
  • Muirfield Village Golf Club, the Memorial Tournament

Easiest courses on the PGA Tour

Veritex Bank Championship - Round One, Frankie Capan III

Move over, Scottie Scheffler . Frankie Capan III has taken one of your records.

On Thursday, at the Veritex Bank Championship on the Korn Ferry Tour , Capan III recorded the second-lowest score in tour history with a 13-under 58.

His 58 set a new course record at Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington, Texas, which Scheffler previously held. The reigning Masters champion shot a 59 on this course on May 3, 2020, while playing with friends, as the PGA Tour was on hiatus due to COVID-19 at the time.

Meanwhile, Capan III bested Scheffler during the first round of an event on the Korn Ferry Tour, which has seen six different players card sub-60 rounds since the beginning of the 2023 season.

“It was a lot of fun out there. After the first four, five holes, I just felt really comfortable with my game and where I was at,” Capan III said.

Veritex Bank Championship

“I’ve been putting in a lot of work in the last few weeks and really the last few months just trying to dial a few things in. I think it all came together, which was nice. And then whenever you’re out there playing well and going low, I really just wanted to keep going as much as I could.”

Capan III rattled off four birdies over his first five holes and then capped off the front nine with an eagle three to shoot a 6-under 29.

By the time he made the turn, he knew his round had the potential to enter rare territory.

Seven consecutive birdies followed on holes 10 through 16, and suddenly, Capan III sat at 13-under par through 16 holes.

But he did not realize that this course played as a par-71. He thought it was a par-72.

“When I got to [13-under], I knew that, okay, there’s 59,” Capan III added.

Veritex Bank Championship

“But very seldom are you that far under par. I shot 59 before, so I thought I might as well break that. Then, I didn’t know it was par 71, but I was really just trying to birdie 17 and 18. Unfortunately, I didn’t get either one. I made an eight-foot slider on 18 to shoot 58. It was pretty cool.”

His tee shot on the par-5 18th found the fairway bunker, forcing him to lay up on the 524-yard par-5. He then found the green with his third shot and two-putted from 39 feet away, including that slider, for par.

“I still thought it was for 59,” Capan III added.

“When someone said it was for 58, I was excited because I know Scottie Scheffler shot 59, so whenever you can beat that guy, especially nowadays, I mean, you’ve got to take advantage.”

PGA Tour Event Disrupted by Alligator Casually Walking Across Tee Box

  • Author: Madison Williams

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is used to having a special four-legged friend show up from time. to time on the course.

The guest, an alligator, halted play at the 17th hole during Thursday's first round. The groups of Bronson Burgoon and Jhonattan Vegas, along with Paul Barjon and Samuel Stevens, had to wait at the tee box for the alligator to cross in front of them before they could tee off. The animal didn't stop them from taking a few practice swings, though.

This isn't the first time an alligator has showed up at the Zurich Classic. The PGA Tour commentators reminded viewers that the tournament was used to a three-legged alligator gracing the course fittingly named "Tripod."

Now on the tee, from New Orleans, Louisiana ... A GATOR 🐊 pic.twitter.com/N8wEJh1pQ1 — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) April 25, 2024

The alligator walked across the tee box without causing any issues with any golfers or fans. But it definitely took its sweet time to walk across.

Both golfing duos ended up paring the 17th hole despite the distraction.

2024 PGA Championship odds, field: Surprising PGA picks from golf model that won 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the pga championship 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks for valhalla golf club.

tour courses pga

The second major of the season will begin on Thursday, May 16, when the 2024 PGA Championship is held at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1986, Valhalla will host its fourth PGA Championship and has also hosted two Senior PGA Championships and the 2008 Ryder Cup. Rory McIlroy was the winner at Valhalla the last time the club hosted a PGA Championship, defeating Phil Mickelson by a stroke in 2014. McIlroy hasn't won a major championship since despite 20 top-10 finishes, but he's one of the favorites at 10-1 in the 2024 PGA Championship odds.

Scottie Scheffler is the No. 1 player in the world and the 4-1 favorite in the 2024 PGA Championship futures, followed by two-time major champion Jon Rahm at 9-1. Before locking in any 2024 PGA Championship picks of your own, entering PGA DFS lineups on sites like DraftKings or FanDuel, or finalizing PGA Championship props and PGA Championship Pick Six entries, be sure to see the 2024 PGA Championship golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $10,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now with the PGA Championship 2024 field taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2024 PGA Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 PGA Championship: Brooks Koepka, a three-time PGA champion and one of the favorites, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top 10. Koepka has five major tournament wins on his resume and a reputation for elevating his level of play in big events. However, his last two major starts haven't gone well as he was 45th at the Masters, which followed a 64th-place finish at last year's Open Championship. He's failed to shoot par in each of his last seven rounds at major tournaments.

After notching three tournament wins in 2023, including last year's PGA Championship, it has been tough sledding for Koepka in 2024. He has no victories, or even top-fives, and across his six starts, he has three times as many finishes outside the top 25 (three) as he has inside the top 10 (one). He played Valhalla at the 2014 PGA Championship and finished in a tie for 15th place, but that placement ranks just eighth out of his 11 career PGA Championship starts.

Another surprise: Will Zalatoris, a 25-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. After battling a back injury that held him out of action for nearly nine months, Zalatoris slipped outside the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking, but is back up to No. 29 following a ninth-place finish at the Masters.

It was already his third top 10 of the season and has become a fixture on the first page of the leaderboard at major championships, finishing top 10 in seven of the 10 majors that he's played since turning professional. Zalatoris finished solo second when he last teed it up at the PGA Championship in 2022 and his iron play is likely to be a deciding factor on a challenging PGA setup. The 27-year-old ranks eighth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: approach (0.720) and was the fifth-best in that category at Augusta this year.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 PGA Championship picks

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 25-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 PGA Championship, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the PGA Championship 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected PGA Championship leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 11 golf majors, including the last three Masters .

Report: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy will get huge loyalty bonuses from PGA Tour

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are among the golfers expected to be given equity in PGA Tour Enterprises as a thank you for sticking with the Tour instead of jumping to rival LIV Golf, the Telegraph reported on Wednesday.

Woods will receive a $100 million and McIlroy a $50 million stake in the newly-formed enterprise for not taking lucrative offers from the Saudi-backed LIV as merger negotiations between the two circuits continue to drag on.

A substantial portion of current PGA Tour members will be rewarded with equity in the new for-profit entity, according to a memo sent out in February by commissioner Jay Monahan and seen by Reuters.

PGA Tour Enterprises is majority owned by the Tour and bolstered by a $1.5 billion investment by Strategic Sports Group, a consortium of sports team owners, the memo said.

The program will reward top performing members and legends who helped build the modern PGA Tour, the memo said.

The initial round of player equity grants will total $930 million and will be awarded to 193 PGA Tour members, with the majority of that going to the top 36 players as determined by a performance-based formula, the memo said.

All initial grants will require players to compete in 15 or more events on the PGA Tour and/or complete service requirements commensurate with the value of the grant.

A spokespersonfor the PGA Tour said the Tour could not comment on any detail of the Telegraph report due to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission regulations and private financial information.

Players who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour amid lucrative recruitment by Saudi-funded LIV Golf are starting to find out how much that loyalty could be worth.

The PGA Tour on Wednesday began contacting the 193 players eligible for the $930 million from a “Player Equity Program” under the new PGA Tour Enterprises .

The bulk of that money — $750 million — went to 36 players based on their career performance, the last five years and how they fared in a recent program that measured their star power.

How much they received was not immediately known. Emails were going out Wednesday afternoon and Thursday informing players of what they would get. One person who saw a list of how the equity shares were doled out said the names had been redacted. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because many details of the program were not made public.

The Telegraph reported Tiger Woods was to receive $100 million in equity and Rory McIlroy could get $50 million, without saying how it came up with those numbers.

Commissioner Jay Monahan outlined the first-of-its-kind equity ownership program in a Feb. 7 memo to players, a week after Strategic Sports Group became a minority investor in the new commercial PGA Tour Enterprises.

The private equity group, a consortium of professional sports owners led by the Fenway Sports Group, made an initial investment of $1.5 billion that could be worth $3 billion. The tour is still negotiating with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia — the financial muscle behind the rival LIV Golf league — as an investor.

Any deal with PIF would most certainly increase the value of the equity shares.

Another person with knowledge of the Player Equity Program, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the dealings, said the equity money is not part of the SSG investment. That money was geared toward growth capital.

Golf.com received a series of informational videos on the Player Equity Program that was sent to players and reported only 50% of the equity would vest after four years, 25% more after six years and the rest of it after eight years.

It also reported how the 36 players from the top tier were judged on “career points,” such as how long they were full members, victories, how often they reached the Tour Championship and extra points for significant victories.

Jason Gore, the tour’s chief player officer, said in one of the videos, “It’s really about making sure that our players know the PGA Tour is the best place to compete and showing them how much the Tour appreciates them being loyal.”

Emails also were sent to 64 players who would share $75 million in aggregate equity based on the past three years, and $30 million to 57 players who are PGA Tour members. Also, $75 million in equity shares was set aside for 36 past players instrumental in building the tour.

The program has an additional $600 million in equity grants that are recurring for future PGA Tour players. Those would be awarded in amounts of $100 million annually started in 2025.

Players only get equity shares from one of the four tiers now, although everyone would be eligible for the recurring grants.

Even with equity ownership geared toward making the PGA Tour better, the concern was players questioning who got how much and whether they received their fair share.

LIV Golf lured away seven major champions dating to 2018 since it launched in 2022, all with guaranteed contracts and most of them believed to have topped $100 million.

McIlroy, playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, was asked how much would make players feel validated for their decision to stay with the PGA Tour.

“I think the one thing we’ve learned in golf over the last two years is there’s never enough,” McIlroy replied.
