Etappe 16 Tour de France 2023

Na de rustdag de benen vol in de verzuring rijden in de tijdrit in etappe 16!

De dag na de rustdag is tricky. De renners mogen zich uitleven in de tijdrit van 22 km. We mogen dit gerust een klimtijdrit noemen. Veel renners zullen met de nodige angst naar deze dag kijken als ze door het routeboek bladeren.

Parcours etappe 16 Tour de France

Een tijdrit van 'slechts' 22 km, wat kan er misgaan. Het zijn echter geen vlakke kilometers. Het is ook nog eens de enige race tegen de klok in de Tour de France 2023. De klimmers zullen we aan het einde van deze dag terugvinden in de top van het klassement. In het begin van de tijdrit krijgen de renners de Côte de Soudans voor hun kiezen. Dit mag weinig problemen opleveren. Na de klim denderen de mannen naar de voet van de Côte de Domancy. Geen lange klim, maar 2,5 km klimmen tegen 9,2% gemiddeld gaat heel veel pijn doen! Wie kan tussen Passy en Combloux zijn verstand het beste op nul zetten en de pijn in zijn benen uitschakelen?

Favorieten etappe 16 Tour de France

De verwachting is dat deze tijdrit voor de echte specialisten teveel hoogtemeters bevat. Iemand die we wel van voren mogen verwachten is Wout van Aert. Niet een rasklimmer, maar wel een alleskunner. Hetzelfde geldt natuurlijk voor Mathieu van der Poel. In de afgelopen bergetappes elke keer goed van voren te zien. Als hij voldoende hersteld is van zijn verkoudheid dan zullen deze 22 lastige kilometers ook iets voor hem zijn. Daarnaast zullen Tadej Pogacar en Jonas Vingegaard geen tijd op elkaar willen verliezen. Grote kans dat deze tijdrit wordt beslist tussen deze mannen. Of krijgen we nog een verassing uit de hoge hoed van bijvoorbeeld nummer 3 van het klassement, Carlos Rodrígues? Zijn landgenoot en puncheur Ion Izagirre zou deze tijdrit ook goed moeten kunnen verteren. Wat denk jij? Gaan Jonas en Pogi het uitvechten, of gaat een derde er met het been vandoor?

Starttijden klassementsmannen en favorieten

Michael Morkov zal als eerste vertrekken om 13:05 vandaag. Na de renner van Soudal-Quickstep is het nog een tijdje wachten voordat de grote namen vertrekken. Mathieu van der Poel vertrekt om 15:21 en Wout Van Aert een klein uurtje later om 16:19. Vanaf 16:44 kan je kijken naar de eerste renners van de top-10. Tour 2023: Starttijden tijdrit naar Combloux – Wie komt hoe laat in actie?

Overzicht De zestiende etappe van de Tour de France is een zeer belangrijke. Het betreft namelijk de enige individuele tijdrit van de ronde. Daags na de rustdag, moeten tussen Passy en Combloux 22,4 lastige kilometers tegen de klok gereden worden. Wie komt wanneer in actie? WielerFlits maakt een overzicht!

Tour de France 2022 Parcours etappe 16: Carcassonne - Foix

Deze eeuw finishte de Tour driemaal in Foix. In 2008 won Kurt Asle Arvesen, in 2012 was Luis León Sánchez de beste, en in 2017 zegevierde Warren Barguil . Telkens kwam de winnaar uit de vlucht van de dag.

De laatste twee races naar Foix hadden een identieke finale. Na de Mur de Péguère, een klim van 9,3 kilometer à 7,9%, stortten de renners zich in een 27 kilometer lange afdaling naar de meet.

Mur de Péguère is in de eerste zes kilometer behoorlijk regelmatig, maar dan barst de hel los. Eerst loopt de weg 1 kilometer met een gemiddelde van 13% omhoog. Daarbij zit een uitschieter naar 18% en wie verwacht dat het daarna wel zal afvlakken komt bedrogen uit. De achtste kilometer stijgt met 12,6% en de negende met 11% en ook de laatste 300 meter voor de top stijgt met dubbele cijfers.

Mooie finale dus. Dit jaar krijgen we die weer te zien.

Voorafgaand aan de Mur de Péguère ronden de renners ook nog de Port de Lers, een klim van 11,4 kilometer à 7%, maar grote kans dat het aankomt op de steile stroken van de Mur én de lange afdaling die daarop volgt.

Tenminste, wat betreft de ritzege. Helemaal in het begin van de race liggen ook nog wat heuvels en die gaan vermoedelijk belangrijk zijn bij de vorming van de vlucht van de dag. Na een kleine 13 kilometer rijden de renners de Côte de Saint-Hilaire op – 1,5 kilometer à 6,6% – en 30 kilometer later volgt de Col de l’Espinas. Dat is een klim van 5,3 kilometer à 5% en die wordt een paar kilometer later gevolgd door de Col du Bac. Die loopt in 3 kilometer op met 4,7%. Op de top hebben de renners er 43,1 kilometer op zitten.

Na de Col du Bac is het parcours 70 kilometer lang zo goed als vlak. Dan duikt de al genoemde Port de Lers op.

De eerste drie renners aan de finish krijgen 10, 6 en 4 bonificatieseconden.

This will be the first Grand Départ in Italy and the 26th that’s taken place abroad  First finale in Nice. Due to the Olympic and Paralympic Games taking place in Paris, the race will not finish in the French capital for the first time.

Two time trials. 25 + 34 = 59km in total, the second of them taking place on the final Monaco>Nice stage. This will be the first time the race has seen a finale of this type for 35 years, the last occasion being the famous Fignon - LeMond duel in 1989.

Apennines (Italy), the Italian and French Alps, Massif Central and Pyrenees will be the mountain ranges on the 2024 Tour route.

The number of countries visited in 2024: Italy, San Marino, Monaco and France. Within France, the race will pass through 7 Regions and 30 departments.

The number of bonus points 8, 5 and 2 bonus seconds go to the first three classified riders, featuring at strategic points along the route (subject to approval by the International Cycling Union)these will have no effect on the points classification. Bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds will be awarded to the first three classified riders at road stage finishes.

Out of a total of 39, the locations or stage towns that are appearing on the Tour map for the first time . In order of appearance: Florence, Rimini, Cesenatico, Bologna, Piacenza, Saint-Vulbas, Gevrey-Chambertin, Colombey-les-Deux-Églises, Évaux-les-Bains, Gruissan, Superdévoluy, Col de la Couillole.

The number of sectors on white roads during stage nine, amounting to 32km in total .

The number of stages: 8 flat, 4 hilly, 7 mountain (with 4 summit finishes at Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adet, Plateau de Beille, Isola 2000, Col de la Couillole), 2 time trials and 2 rest days.

The number of riders who will line up at the start of the Tour, divided into 22 teams of 8 riders each.

The height of the summit of the Bonette pass in the Alps, the highest tarmac road in France, which will be the “roof” of the 2024 Tour.

The total vertical gain during the 2024 Tour de France.

PRIZE MONEY

A total of 2,3 million euros will be awarded to the teams and riders including € 500,000 to the final winner of the overall individual classification .

The stage is the first of three in the Pyrenees. Today is the easier of the three but could still see attacks amongst the GC riders. 

Alpecin-Deceuninck are the last team to sign on after Jasper Philipsen won stage 15 in Carcassonne on Sunday.

Pogacar lines up alongside Vingegaard. 

Will we see a battle between the two today? Perhaps. We should at least see the early skirmishes.

The riders face 5.4km of neutralised roads before the 'depart reel.'

The riders are tired after 15 stages of intense racing but we're expecting attacks to go into the break of the day.

There is an east wind blowing, which could make the early kilometres fast and nervous.    

As you may have seen on Cyclingnews, the AG2R Citroën team have revealed that Aurélien Paret-Peintre and Mikaël Chérel were the two riders at the  Tour de France  to test positive for COVID-19 on the final rest day. 

Further testing has ruled that their viral load does not allow them to continue in the race.

After losing leader Ben O'Connor and other riders to injury,  the AG2R Citroën team have just three riders left in the Tour: 

Benoit Cosnefroy, Stan Dewulf and Bob Jungels.

Here we go! 

Race director Christian Prudhomme waves his yellow flag and the stage is on.

Attack! 

Tim Wellens is the first to make a move. But he is quickly closed down.

The stage starts with a gradual climb out of Carcassonne. The Côte de Saint-Hilaire cat 4 climb comes after 10km.  

Neilson Powless of EF has sparked another attack. A dozen or so riders are with him. 

Others riders surge across and suddenly there are 29 riders up there, with almost every team present. 

The peloton is already 1:00 behind as Michael Matthews tries to go across. 

That will not be easy.

Riders up front include: Vlasov, Caruso and Teuns,  

Dani Martinez for Ineos, Brandon McNulty for UAE are there, as is Wout van Aert of Jumbo-Visma.   

This was the moment the attack went away.

Quinn Simmons is also trying to jump across but he is 2:00 behind and Zimmerman stops working with him.

Simmons appears to have shaved off his red beard on the rest day. This was one of his attacks earlier in the Tour.  

Aleksandr Vlasov is 11th overall at 10:32, he is the highest ranked of the breakaway group. 

Neilson Powless, Valentin Madouas and Damiano Caruso are the other members of the top 20 overall.

The attacks has opened a 3:30 lead on the peloton. 

Matthews and Simmons both appear to have missed the move and are losing time on the attackers.

Bissegger is the first to top of the Côte de Saint-Hilaire and scores 1 KOM point, beating polka-dot jersey wearer Geschke. 

The peloton reaches the summit of the Côte de Saint-Hilaire with a gap of 5:05. 

The Jumbo-Visma team is riding on the 

Jumbo-Visma are leading the peloton to protect Vingegaard's race lead.

However they have van Aert and Van Hooydonck in the 29-rider attack.

The climb has already split the attack, with Burgaudeau, Gougeard and Jorgenson going clear. 

There is already a race within the breakaway, which is the race within in the race. 

The roads are twisting up and down and through the vineyards and sunflowers of the stunning Aude region, south of Carcassonne. 

In the peloton Jumbo have just 2 riders on the front - Laporte and Benoot, with lots of Ineos riders behind them and then Vingegaard sat in their slipstream.

The peloton is at 5:50 and lined out on the country roads.

Up Front, Jorgenson of Movistar has eased up and is dropping back to the attack group. 

Burgaudeau and Gougeard push on and lead by 55 seconds. 

The rider start the Col de l'Espinas. It is 5.2km long at 5.2%.

Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) has just been told by his team car to ease up. That leaves Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM) alone out front but his leads is falling. 

The 28 chasers will surely catch him soon. 

Only six teams with full rosters going into final mountain stages of the Tour and Ineos Grenadiers are among them, while Jumbo and UAE are down to six riders.

Can the British team use its numerical advantage to push Geraint Thomas even higher on GC?

Thomas has dropped back to his team car. The mechanic seems to have applied some sun cream on his back.

The peloton has slipped to 6:30 on Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM).  

Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM) reaches the top of the climb alone as he continues his solo exploit up front.

Bissegger leads the chase group  to the climb at 40 seconds.

Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM) lead the 28 by 50 seconds. 

The peloton is 6:20, with the work of Benoot and Laporte pegging the gap at around 6:00. 

That still means that Vlasov will still move up in the GC if he can hold his gap. 

The riders are on rolling valley roads. The next key point is the intermediate sprint in Lavelanet, in 20km or so. 

Crash in the peloton!

Nobody was hurt in the crash and everyone was quickly away.

Up front Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM) has been caught and so we have a 29-rider attack. 

They lead the peloton by 6:00.

The work of Jumbo is reducing the gap to the break. It's down to 5:30.

It will be interesting to see if Wout van Aert and Nathan Van Hooydonck (Jumbo-Visma) drop back after the intermediate sprint that comes in 10km.  

Caleb Ewan stops for to have his saddle position tweaked. The nose is dropped a little, perhaps to help him after his crash the other day.

The AG2R Citroën team revealed that Aurélien Paret-Peintre and Mikaël Chérel were the two riders at the  Tour de France  to test positive for COVID-19 on the final rest day.

5km to the intermediate sprint in Lavelanet.

Poor Tiesj Benoot is working a lot on the front of the peloton to keep the gap at 6:00.

He crashed hard on stage 15 and is battered and bruised.

Mark Cavendish has vowed to return to the  Tour de France  and is confident he can win again and so beat Eddy Merckx’s record of 34 stage victories.

The 37-year-old Manxman was not selected for the  QuickStep-AlphaVinyl  roster, with  Fabio Jakobsen  securing the sprinter’s role but he made his ambitions clear while speaking to the BBC from the Isle of Man as he prepared for the Commonwealth Games road race.

"I know I'll win again,"  Mark Cavendish  told the  BBC .

Well, that's a surprise.  Nils Eekhoff beat van Aert to win the intermediate sprint, collecting the 20 points. 

Van Aert scored 17 points and quickly had a word with Eekhoff. However he is mathematically close to winning the green jersey.

The 29 riders are rolling through and off on the flat roads as they head towards the foothills of the Pyrenees.

The peloton gets to the sprint point some 6:40 after the break. 

Hmmm. Marc Soler of UAE has slipped back from the peloton. 

He has already visited the doctor's car. Is he ill? 

UAE team leader Tadej Pogacar is up front with his other teammates.

Of course, UAE also have Big Nut Brandon McNulty in the 29-rider break as a strategical move.  

We're hearing from French television that Soler has vomited earlier in the stage. 

He is suffering in the 31C heat. And the hardest part of the stage, the two major climbs, are still to come. 

The peloton reaches the feed zone, with riders grabbing musettes to enjoy a moving lunch. 

The peloton has eased slightly, with Vingegaard taking a natural break. The gap to the 29-rider attack is up to 7:00.   

Soler is not feeling great but does seem able to ride on. He will try to finish inside the time limit and try to recover for the next two stages in the Pyrenees. 

Jumbo continue to lead the peloton but Ineos are also riding up front. However only Christophe Laporte is riding for Jumbo, hence the gap going up to 7:30.    

Poor Marc Soler is riding just ahead of the broom wagon. 

He faces a 88km ride of survival.

With Soler sick, Marc Hirschi was on domestique duty.

The 29 riders in the break are pushing on, trying to evade the peloton.

Marc Soler is suffering just ahead of the Voiture Balai.

Fortunately for Pogacar he looks fine and has several teammates in the peloton to help him.

The first climb of the Pyrenees comes in 22km. That means the climb starts in 12km.

The Port de Lers is 11.5km at 6.5%. It will surely shake up the race, split the break and expose the team leaders and their teams. 

Barry Ryan is in Foix and has written an excellent preview of the Vingegaard-v-Pogacar battle that is expected to happen today and especially on Wednesday and Thursday in the Pyrenees. He's compared the two to prize fighters. 

Barry writes: 

"On the day Tadej Pogačar sent Primož Roglič sprawling to the canvas atop La Planche des Belles at the end of the 2020 Tour de France, he became his sport’s undisputed heavyweight champion. In almost every outing since, he has seemed to produce dizzying combinations that left even the doughtiest of opponents feeling punch drunk.

"But now, just as Pogačar’s dominance was becoming monotonous,  Jonas Vingegaard has emerged  as the Frazier to his Ali. The Dane already performed the rare feat of laying a glove on Pogačar when he briefly distanced him atop Mont Ventoux en route to  second overall on last year’s Tour , but that warning shot came long after a boxing referee would already have stopped the fight. An unbloodied Pogačar still reached Paris with a lead of more than five minutes over Vingegaard."

Poor Marc Soler is now 17:00 down on the attackers. Yet he bravely rides on.

The Port de Lers starts and there is a sudden acceleration in the 29-rider attack.

Caruso and Le Gac up the pace massively. Other riders are dropped, including Gilbert. 

Caruso goes solo. 

He's is going for a long-range attack.

The peloton are 8:00 down but now riding faster as they also near the foot of the Port de Lers.   

Damiano Caruso is on a mission to complete his Giro/Tour/Vuelta stage win collection. 

But the chase group is numerous and strong. Woods and Storer  going across to him.

Caruso already leads by 1:00. Forza! 

In the peloton Laporte is dropped after his hard work on the front. 

Incredibly van Aert is still up front and in the group chasing Caruso. He has not done any work today and is up the road if Vingegaard needs him but his tactics are questionable. 

Woods and Storer join Caruso with 4km of the Port de Lers to climb.

Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) is also chasing and Geschke moves too. Vlasov and van Aert join him, as does McNulty.

Behind Movistar kick-off the GC race, upping the pace for Mas. 

Three riders are trying to drag mas away. 

This is interesting. Mas is 10th at 9:58 and needs to pull back time.

Now Groupama mass at the front of the GC group and Vingegaard loses Benoot.

He only has Kuss to pace him now. 

Up front the attackers have come together. 

Van Aert is again going deep in the attack rather than ride in the peloton with Vingeggard.   

Of course Pogacar only has Majka with him, McNulty is in the attack and Soler is sick and stay in the race.

Geschke surges to take maximum points at the KOM.

There are 7 riders in the attack group. Van Aert, McNulty, Geschke and Jorgenson have joined Caruso, Storer and Woods in the lead.

They're racing for the stage victory.

Geshke scores 10 more KOM points.

The GC group is 9:20 down on the attackers and so still have a way to climb.

ATTACK POGACAR!!!!

However Vingegaard quickly manages to join him.

The Dane responded very well to the first attack. 

Now there's another!

The two ease and so Gaudu accelerates away. Thomas follows him.

The attacks have blown the GC group apart. 

Bardet is dropped as Kuss is back to pace the group and protect Vingegaard.

The GC riders reach the summit of the Port de Lers at 7:30. 

Pogacar attacks again! This time on the descent!

Again Vingegaard jumps on his wheel. 

This is mano-a-mano racing. 

Thomas and the other come back to Vin+Pog as Bardet is forced to chase hard with several teammates.

Today's stage and the Port de Lers was the entree to the big Pyrenean stages and today's final climb. 

Pogacar has kicked it off earlier than expected.

Thomas and Yates, Quintana and others are there as they catch Mas. 

Up front, Vlasov joins the attack. 

Bardet is 20 seconds down on the GC group.

It's still hot out there, despite the race entering the Pyrenees.

Hugo Houle (Israel-Premier Tech) is now on the move up front, forcing the others to chase and so give Woods a free ride. 

The Canadian is onto the final climb of the stage, the steep Mur de Péguère.

It is a real wall in parts and climbs 9.3km at 7.9% but the second half is the real steep part.  

The attack has split into 4 different group. All could still win the stage.

Jumbo again lead the GC group. Vinegegaard has Kuss and now Nathan Van Hooydonck riding on the front. 

Majka has a problem. 

Louis Meintjes (Intermarché-Wanty Gobert) attacks the GC group to try to anticipate later surges. Clever, if it works. 

Houle is pushing on bravely as the gradients begin to hurt.

Houle leads the Woods group by 45 seconds, the van Aert group is at 1:30.  

Behind Meintjes is back in the GC peloton, which is at 8:00. They will not fight for the stage today.  

Van Art is dropped from his group and eases up. He will have to play a role for Vingegaard on the descent to the finish in Foix.

Movistar is pacing the GC group to the steepest parts of the Mur de Péguère.

Movistar's work is helping Jumbo to control the race with their pacing. 

Is that a friendly alliance growing there?  

As the steep roads begin, Majka moves past Movistar to set a harder pace.

Pogacar is spinning his legs for now. But Pidcock and Bardet are quickly dropped.

Thomas and Yates are slightly off the back but riding their own pace.

The GC group is spread down the road. Froome is not far from the front of the action.

Yates makes an effort to drag Thomas up to the Pog+Vin group.

Quintana and Gaudi are also there. 

Majka has a problem and so Pogacar is alone.

Majka seemed to snap his chain. Ouch.

Now Kuss is setting the pace and hurting everyone in the GC group.  

Houle is first to the top and faces a fast descent to the finish. The chasers are at 25 seconds.

Behind it's Kuss+Vingegaard+Pogacar+Quintana.

Thomas is 30 seconds behind now, he's struggling on the steep climb. 

Thomas has dropped Gaudu and is fighting to limit his losses.  

Thomas, with some help from Dani Martinez who was in the break, gets back to the yellow jersey group. 

Van Aert is also with them, after also waiting from the break.   

Pogacar also has McNulty in a clever game of team tactics. 

The GC group is 6:10 down on Houle, who is still solo up front and chasing his first ever pro road race win. 

He leads his chasers by 30 seconds. They are Jorgenson and his teammate Woods.

So it's Canada, with the USA (Jorgenson) chasing, with Canada (Woods) rightly sitting on.

If all goes right for Israel, they could go 1-2 today.

The other chasers are 1:20 back. 

We spoke too soon! 

Jorgenson has crashed! 

He slipped out on a corner! 

Jorgenson slipped across the rough Pyrenees gravel.  

That's tragic for the American. Let's hope he can get up and chase. 

 The crash has left Woods chasing Houle at 30 seconds. 

The last and only Canadian stage winner in the Tour de France was Steve Bauer in 1988.

He's in the team car now for Israel-PremierTech.

Jorgenson returns to Woods. He's full of road rash but refuses to give up the fight. 

That means that Woods can now sit on him again.

Whatever happens, Hugo Houle (Israel Premier Tech) has won the Prix Antargaz de la Combativité for his attack. 

Jorgenson has a wound on his left arm, with blood running down his arm but he races on.

Houle has extended his lead out to 1:00 on Jorgenson and Woods. 

He can savour his first pro win and Canada's first win since 1988. 

Behind Martinez is dragging the Vingegaard group along to try to gain time on some of their GC rivals, especially Bardet, who was fourth overall.  

This could be a historic day for North American cycling, with a possible 1-2-3 for Houle, Woods and Jorgenson. 

Here's Houle. He can start to celebrate and remember his late brother.

It will be an emotional finish for him.

Indeed, he points to the sky and punches the air.

Chapeau Hugo! 

Houle wins the stage in Foix! 

Madouas has joined Woods and Jorgenson.  

He spoils the North American party by taking second place, ahead of Woods.

Here come the chasers, including Vlasov, who will gain time in the GC.

It is 34 years and 15 days since Steve Bauer's stage win. This is there second. 

Houle takes out a chain with a cross and says: 'This is for my brother."

Woods arrives beyond the finish and hugs Houle.  

Here comes the GC group. 

It's important to see the gaps to Bardet and others in the top 10. 

We'll see some changes. 

Van Aert brings them home to score a few points but there is no gap between Vingegaard and Pogacar and Thomas too. 

Indeed, Vingegaard hugs and thanks van Aert. 

In the GC, Quintana moves up to fourth overall, passing Bardet. 

Pidcock and Yates come, a minute or so down. Bardet is still out there and fighting to limit his losses.

Bardet loses a chunk of time. 

They are naturally celebrating at the Israel Premier Tech team bus.

Pogacar is given a cold water shower as he warms-down in the podium area.

Pogacar attacked on the first climb but then the pace set by Kuss hurt him and he was unable to attack on the Mur de Péguère. 

Houle celebrated his stage win with lots of emotions. He dedicated it to his brother, who was killed a decade ago. 

Riders are still finishing the stage in Foix. 

The time limit is 42:13 today.

It's nice to see that fellow French-speaking Canadian heads to the podium area to congratulate Hugo Houle.  

Houle can savour his moment on the podium.

He smiles and waves to the crowd but is emotional. 

Jonas Vingegaard can also celebrate on the podium. He defended his 2:22 lead on Pogacar. 

Houle was emotional about his win.

"I’ve never won a race so I guess it’s the right place to win my first race," he said.

"When I attacked, it was to set the table for Michaewl Woods but they let me go and Mike made a gap. I just went full gas. I hung on and hung and was suffering so much on the steep part of the climb. 

"I knew that if I got to the top with 30 or 40 seconds, that I could do it and so I went full gas. It was tight and a long time at 30 seconds but I never gave up.  When they showed me I was at one minute, it was unreal and I knew I was going to do it.

"I was a bit afraid and suffered with cramps because I couldn’t get to the team car for the last 60km but I made it."  

Houle talked dedicating his win to his later brother.

"This means a lot to me. I had one dream: to win the stage for my brother who died when I turned professional. I won this for him. I waited for 12 years for this. Today I got my win for him. It’s incredible. I don’t know what to say, I’m so happy."

Sadly not everyone could celebrate today. 

Daniel Ostanek is at the finish line for Cyclingnews and has confirmed that Marc Soler finished outside the time limit.   

The Spaniard was ill and was dropped early in the stage. He fought to finish but came in after the 42:13 time limit.

In contrasting emotions, this was the moment Marc Soler finished outside the time limit. 

It leaves Pogacar with just 4 teammates!

Geraint Thomas made it through another hard stage without losing time to Pogcar and Vingegaard, while gaining time on  on some GC rivals like Bardet.

"It’s tough to do anything with the front row because they’re super strong but you never know," Thomas said. 

"I never expected Pogacar to have the day he had up the Granon. It’s good the team is strong and Dani is feeling a lot better after his sickness and Castroviejo is on his way back up too. We've got Yatesy and Tom Pidcock too. 

"A big shout out to Yatesy, he really committed to me there.  He’s out of contract this year and that can always play a part when committing to a teammate but he committed to helping me and was really strong. That allowed me to close the gap at the top."   

Thomas added: 

"It was hot out there and after the rest day, you never quite know how people are going to pull up. 

"It was a nervous start with the wind, and the break went pretty quickly. It was good for us because we had Dani in there. It was a case of doing the two climbs as best as possible. I rode my own pace and I’ve been doing most of the race and come back to them just over the top. 

"I had Dani there to close the last 100 metres which was great. I gained a bit of time on Bardet, which is nice but the other guys are still all there. It was a decent day." 

Thomas is considering the Pyrenees as a big block of important racing. 

"I’m seeing it as a three-day block and every stage gets harder. Four solid climbs tomorrow and then the day after there are three but even tougher," he said. 

"A lot can still happen especially in his heat. We’re dealing with it but if it does get you, you can get through it but the knock-on effect can make you pay for it." 

Daniel Ost`a nek spoke to Steve Bauer at the finish in Foix and will have a full story very soon on Cyclingnews.   

Bauer was the last Canadian to win a Tour stage back in 1988 and was in the Israel team car today, advising Houle.  

"It’s incredible to see. What a tough pro Huge has been. He’s like the top team man for his leaders, doing his job day in, day out," Bauer told Cyclingnews. 

"He’s a top professional. He studies the plan, he organises himself well and to have such a performance like that today is superb. He had a chance to go for the wein and he was super strong. He rode smart, he rode strong and deserves it all."

Despite some aggressive attacks from Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) on Port de Lers,  Jonas Vingegaard  (Jumbo-Visma) remains in yellow after stage 16 with a margin of 2:22 over the Slovenian.

But Pogačar's attacks took their toll as Romain Bardet (Team DSM). He suffered badly during the first major climb and then was dropped more dramatically on Mur de Péguère. Bardet now sits just inside the top 10, 6:37 behind Vingegaard.

Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe) was also in the break and so gained four minutes, moving up from 11th to 8th.

Tour de France – 16. etape

Hvad skete der? Jonas Vingegaard satte alle til vægs på enkeltstarten tirsdag. Danskeren tog 1'38" på Tadej Pogacar.

Vingegaard fører nu Tour de France med 1'48" til Pogacar i det samlede klassement.

Vingegaard troede, at wattmåleren var gået i stykker

Den danske cykelstjerne troede ikke sine tal, da han så, hvor stærkt det gik på enkeltstarten. Sådan fortæller Jonas Vingegaard efter dagens etape.

- Jeg havde helt utrolige ben. På et tidspunkt begyndte jeg at tvivle på min wattmåler. Jeg troede, den var gået i stykker. Jeg prøvede at holde igen nogle gange, men jeg kørte stadigvæk virkelig, virkelig hurtigt. Jeg havde måske en af de bedste dage i mit liv på en cykel, siger han i det officielle vinderinterview.

Vingegaard slukker Jumbo-Vismas tørke

Med sin sejr på dagens enkeltstart gav Jonas Vingegaard Jumbo-Visma den første etapesejr i årets Tour de France. Dermed ender han den tørke, der har været gennem årets Tour indtil videre, hvor holdet flere gange har forsøgt sig uden held.

Sidste år tog Jumbo-Visma seks etapesejre.

Vingegaard overgår Pogacar – kommer op på siden af legender

Jonas Vingegaard har nu ført det samlede klassement i Tour de France efter sammenlagt 22 etaper gennem tiden. Dermed overgår han Pogacar på 21 og rykker op på siden af Greg Lemond, Joop Zoetemelk og Laurent Fignon.

Sådan skriver mediedata-firmaet Gracenote til TV 2 Sport.

Imponerende tal bevidner Vingegaards lussing til Pogacar

Ifølge Cycling Statistics  var Vingegaard 4,4 sekunder per kilometer hurtigere end andenpladsen Tadej Pogacar på enkeltstarten.

Det er den suverænt største margin per kilometer mellem nummer ét og to på en WorldTour-enkeltstart siden 2014, skriver mediet.

Nærmeste forfølgere på listen er Tirreno-Adriatico tidligere i år (Filippo Ganna med 2,4 sekunder til Lennard Kämna) og Giro d'Italia 2019 (Primoz Roglic med 2,4 sekunder til Simon Yates).

Mads P. sender sjov besked efter Vingegaard-triumf

- Jeg er nødt til at spørge, hvorfor min santini_cycling fantomdragt ikke er så hurtig som den, Jonas Vingegaard har – eller måske er det bare benene, skriver Mads Pedersen i et opslag på Instagram .

Han følger teksten op med en emoji, der kigger rundt med tungen ude af munden – som en tydelig illustration af, at det nok handler om benene.

At en mand, som i dén grad udfolder sit lysende talent med determineret rå vildskab, samtidig er et stilfærdigt, venligt og omgængeligt familiemenneske – det fortjener dobbelt respekt!

Hvad var mon den maksimale hastighed, Vingegaard kørte i dag? Det så så vildt ud, at jeg skiftede kanal et par sekunder.

Hold på hat og briller ;-) 81,9 kilometer i timen kørte Vingegaard på et tidspunkt, hvilket ifølge LeTourData  var det hurtigste overhovedet blandt alle ryttere på dagens etape.

Vingegaard skriver dansk cykelhistorie.

Vingegaard bliver den første danske rytter til at vinde en enkeltstart i Tour de France nogensinde. Det skriver mediedatafirmaet Gracenote til TV 2 Sport.

Ole Ritter har vundet to enkeltstarter i Giro d'Italia (1967 og 1971), mens Jørgen Marcussen også har vundet en enkeltstart i Giro d'Italia (1980).

Rytter udgår efter styrt

Alexis Renard stiller ikke til start på 17. etape af Tour de France. Franskmanden styrtede på enkeltstarten og har pådraget sig en brækket albue.

Vingegaard fik ingen mellemtider, fortæller Jumbo-Visma-sportsdirektør

Allerede ved første mellemtid på dagens enkeltstart var Vingegaard 16 sekunder foran Tadej Pogacar. Men tiden fik han faktisk ikke at vide, fortæller Jumbo-Visma-sportsdirektør Grischa Niermann efter etapen.

- Vi sagde ikke noget til Jonas der. Det behøver han ikke. Han skal bare køre sin bedste enkeltstart, og vi skal guide ham, siger Niermann til Sporza .

- Men vi så UAE køre længere fremme, og så blev jeg mere spændt. Han (Vingegaard, red.) begyndte at flyve og køre endnu stærkere.

Pogacar er altså en kæmpe sportsmand. Han lykønsker altid sine konkurrenter og virker ekstremt sympatisk. Det er en fornøjelse at se.

Jeg er helt enig! Stor sportsmand :-).

Er der nogle, der er røget for tidsgrænsen?

Ifølge mediet Het Nieuwsblad  og Intermarché-rytteren Lilian Calmejane røg Alexis Renard faktisk for tidsgrænsen med ét sekund. Han står dog på løbets resultatliste , så han må være taget til nåde. Det er jo heller ikke til at arbejde med, når Vingegaard kører så afsindig hurtigt :-).

Jonas Vingegaard brølede af lykke, da han kørte over stregen. Efterfølgende har danskeren forklaret, hvad der ligger bag.

Du brølede, da du kørte over målstregen. Hvad var det et udtryk for?

- Det er nok, at vi har været tæt på så mange gange. Det er en stor forløsning for os, at vi endelig tog sejren (en etapesejr, red.), siger han til TV 2 Sport.

Tom dumoulin, tidligere cykelrytter, reagerer på vingegaards sejr.

- Det er den bedste enkeltstart, der nogensinde er kørt i cykling.

Sådan lyder den klare konstatering fra den tidligere cykelrytter Tom Dumoulin i et interview med Wielerflits .

- Det her er uden sidestykke. Jeg har ingen ord for det. Jonas (Vingegaard, red.) tager over tre minutter på Wout van Aert. Og han tager mere end halvandet minut på Pogacar ... Ingen havde forventet dette, siger hollænderen, der kørte sammen med Vingegaard, inden han indstillede karrieren før denne sæson.

Selv var Dumoulin blandt verdens bedste enkeltstartsryttere på topniveauet.

Der er på blandt andet Twitter mange, der tænker, om doping kunne være forekommet. Er det noget, der er værd at tænke over?

Jeg tror altid, at nogle vil spekulere efter sådan en kraftpræstation. Vingegaard har selv forsikret, at han ikke benytter sig af præstationsfremmende midler på nogen måde. Men danskeren understreger også, at han er glad for, at der rejses tvivl generelt. Læs mere om dét her  :-).

Jumbo-Visma-sportsdirektør Frans Maassen efter etapen:

- Det her forventede jeg ikke. Vi tænkte, at det ville handle om sekunder, og han (Vingegaard, red.) fangede ham (Pogacar, red.) næsten på målstregen, siger Maassen til TV 2 Norge efter etapen.

- Alt kan ske på en dag som denne. Det er dagen efter hviledagen. Pogacar kørte en rigtig, rigtig god enkeltstart, så jeg forstår ikke, at der kom så stor en forskel. Jonas var flyvende.

Tour de France 2023 Route stage 16: Passy - Combloux

The parcours is not unlike the climbing ITT from de 2016 Tour de France. That race went from Sallanches to Megève and took in the Côte de Domancy before moving through Combloux on the way to the finish line.

In fact, this year’s course features an extra section at the beginning, while the part from Combloux to Megève has been removed.

After setting off from Passy the riders tackle the Côte de Soudans – 1.3 kilometres at 8.8% – in the first 3.4 kilometres. A gradual downhill takes them onto a flat section from Sallanches to Domancy. That’s where the Côte de Domancy kicks in. The 2.5 kilometres climb at 9.4% continues for 3.5 kilometres at 5% to the line in Combloux.

Seven years ago the road ascended for 4.5 more kilometres before the ITT finished on descent with a Chris Froome victory.

There are three intermediate time checks – at kilometre 7.1, at kilometre 16.1 and at kilometre 18.9.

The Côte de Domancy last featured in the 2021 Tour de France. It was the first climb in an alpine stage to Tignes, where Ben O’Connor rounded out a 17 kilometres solo with a commanding stage triumph.

EN DIRECT - Tour de France (16e étape): le peloton bouche bée face au chrono de Vingegaard

"personne ne s’y attendait", le chrono stratosphérique de vingegaard a scotché tout le monde.

En écrasant le contre-la-montre dans des proportions totalement inattendues, Jonas Vingegaard a assommé le Tour de France et surpris l'ensemble du peloton. Resté parmi les journalistes suivre d'un œil la fin du contre-la-montre, Marc Madiot est comme tous ceux qui l’entourent à ce moment-là: surpris. "Qui s'y attendait ? Personne", glisse le manager de la Groupama-FDJ.

Même Wout van Aert, troisième à près de trois minutes de son leader danois, s’avouait battu, lui le meilleur rouleur du monde ou pas loin: "C'est fou comme Jonas a été rapide. (...) Moi ? Je suis le meilleur des gens normaux".

"Tout le monde s’est trompé, y compris les managers et les coureurs. Tout le monde votait Pogacar. L’écart entre les deux à l’arrivée est stratosphérique", observe Cyrille Guimard, consultant RMC.

Abandon d'Alexis Renard (Cofidis)

Victime d'une lourde chute lors du contre-la-montre ce mardi, le Français Alexis Renard ne repartira pas mercredi lors de la 17e étape du Tour de France.

Si le coureur de la Cofidis avait une grosse chance d'être repêché par les organisateurs après être arrivé hors-délai pour 1 seconde sur le chrono, Alexis Renard est trop touché pour continuer. Dans nun message posté sur les réseaux sociaux, son équipe a confirmé la mauvaise nouvelle et a confirmé qu'il souffrait d'une fracture du coude droit.

"Je suis surpris de mon chrono" admet Vingegaard

"Il y avait tellement de bruit autour que je n'entendais pas ce qu'ils disaient à la radio, mais on m'a bien guidé aujourd'hui alors je voulais remercier toute l'équipe, le directeur sportif et tout le monde."

"Je me sentais bien aujourd'hui, c'est mon meilleur chrono. Je suis vraiment très fier de ce que j'ai fait aujourd'hui et heureux de la victoire. Je ne pensais pas vraiment que je pourrais être le meilleur, je suis surpris par mon chrono. Je ne pensais pas faire aussi bien honnêtement."

"Le Tour de France n'est pas fini, il y a encore de nombreuses étapes difficiles, on va devoir se battre dans les prochains jours. Et j'ai hâte."

"J'avais divisé le chrono en quatre parties, la descente, la partie plate, puis la montée où il fallait être à fond. Même s'il fallait garder de l'énergie pour la dernière partie plus plate. Je suis très très heureux, c'est ma première victoire sur un contre-la-montre au Tour de France donc je suis fier."

La déception de Pogacar qui a donné son maximum

Tadej Pogacar au micro de France TV après la 16e étape:

"Je ne pouvais rien faire de plus, j'étais à fond. Ce n'était peut-être pas ma meilleure journée. Le Tour n'est peut-être pas fini mais il m'a mis beaucoup de temps. Je pense que le changement de vélo c'était le bon choix, ce n'était que quelques secondes à l'arrivée et cela n'a pas fait une grosse différence. Honnêtement je ne m'attendais à faire de tels écarts avec les autres, je suis deuxième de l'étape. Mais la moitié du contre-la-montre je ne me sentais pas dans les meilleures dispositions. J'espère que cela ira mieux mercredi."

Les images du finish de Vingegaard sur le chrono

C'est impressionnant mais Jonas Vingegaard a bouclé ce contre-la-montre seulement quelques instants après son rival slovène.

"Il y a une jambe d'écart", Madiot impressionné par le coup de maître de Vingegaard

"Personne ne s'attendait à ça, a réagi Marc Madiot (Groupama-FDJ). Mais on a vu assez vite que Pogacar n'était pas dans un grand jour. Je pense quand même que Vingegaard a fait l'un des chronos de sa vie, si ce n'est le meilleur."

L'énorme coup de Vingegaard au général

Avant cette 16e étape, Jonas Vingegaard possédait 10 secondes d'avance sur Tadej Pogacar. Après ce contre-la-montre, le Danois possède 1 minute et 48 secondes d'avance sur son rival pour le classement général.

Derrière, Adam Yates a délogé Carlos Rodriguez du podium et l'Autrichien Felix Gall a chipé la 10e place à Guillaume Martin. David Gaudu est toujours 9e du général.

Tadej Pogacar a signé un gros chrono mais Jonas Vingegaard a fait encore plus fort et a terminé dans la foulée de son rival slovène. Victoire d'étape et maillot jaune renforcé pour le Danois.

Si Tadej Pogacar montre de belles choses, Jonas Vingegaard est intouchable. Le Danois est en train d'assomer le Tour de France et compte 1'05'' au dernier intermédiaire.

"Aujourd'hui tu gagnes le Tour", lance le directeur sportif de la Jumbo-Visma à son coureur.

Ce mardi soir, Jonas Vingegaard devrait compter presque 2 minutes d'avance sur Tadej Pogacar au général.

En temps réel Jonas Vingegaard voit même son avance s'accentuer et approcher la minute.

Superbe chrono pour David Gaudu qui termine avec le 5e temps provisoire. Le Breton a repris presque deux minutes d'écart sur Guillaume Martin.

Enorme début de chrono pour Jonas Vingegaard qui passe avec 16 secondes d'avance sur Tadej Pogacar. Le Danois prend tous les risques pour gagner de précieuses secondes.

Pogacar explose le premier intermédiaire

Tadej Pogacar impressionne et termine avec 26 secondes d'avance sur Stefan Kung au premier intermédiaire. Problème, Jonas Vingegaard semble plus rapide.

La réaction de Cavagna après le temps canon de van Aert

Leader jusqu'au passage de Wout van Aert, Rémi Cavagna a tout donné.

"J'ai perdu du temps sur le faux plat montant, on voit bien que les grimpeurs finissent beaucoup plus forts, a réagi le champion de France de la spécialité. On est sur le Tour de France, j'ai pris du plaisir. J'ai fait le maximum."

Vingegaard s'élance

Porteur du maillot jaune, le Danois est parti sur un très gros rythme. Dès les premiers hectomètres, Jonas Vingegaard est parti à fond sur le plat. Le combat des chefs est lancé.

Deuxième du classement général, Tadej Pogacar s'élance sur ce chrono. Dans deux minutes, ce sera au tour de Jonas Vingegaard. Le duel commence.

Van Aert leader provisoire devant Cavagna

Après une grosse ascension de la Côte de Domancy, Wout van Aert a mieux fini que Rémi Cavagna. Le Belge chipe la première place provisoire au Français pour 15 secondes.

Van Aert creuse l'écart sur Cavagna

Mauvaise nouvelle pour Rémi Cavagna, Wout van Aert améliore son finish et possède près de 10 secondes d'avance sur le Français à moins de 2km de l'arrivée.

Le Belge devrait s'emparer de la première place provisoire.

Le numéro de van Aert dans la Côte de Domancy

Wout van Aert a aspiré Warren Barguil et roule actuellement dans le même temps que Rémi Cavagna. Si le Belge accusait 20 secondes de retard sur le Français au pied de la Côte de Domancy, il réalise une ascension magnifique et pourrait bien déloger l'actuel leader provisoire à Combloux.

Le coureur de la Jumbo-Visma passe avec 2 secondes d'avance au sommet de la dernière difficulté du jour.

Gaudu s'élance dans le chrono

Meilleur français du classement général avec une neuvième place avant cette 16e étape, David Gaudu va devoir se dépasser pour ne pas perdre trop de temps dans ce contre-la-montre.

Sauf rebondissement, tous les coureurs de la Groupama-FDJ ont prévu de changer de vélo au pied de la Côte de Domancy. Un choix qui ferait perdre une quinzaine de secondes au Breton.

Guillaume Martin est parti

L'actuel 10e du classement général va tenter de faire un gros coup ce mardi lors du chrono. Le leader de l'équipe Cofidis pourrait se rapprocher du top 5 avec un gros contre-la-montre. Mais ce sera dur pour lui.

Van Aert en retard sur Cavagna avant la Côte de Domancy

Pas de changement de vélo pour van Aert qui accuse près de 20 secondes de retard sur Rémi Cavagna au pied de la Côte de Domancy. Le Belge est pour le moment derrière le Français.

Van Aert a perdu du temps sur Cavagna

Et finalement Wout van Aert a perdu du temps avant de s'attaquer à la Côte de Domancy. Le Belge accuse près de 15 secondes de retard sur Rémi Cavagna.

Alaphilippe termine à la 12e place provisoire

Julian Alaphilippe n'oublie pas de saluer le public français massés sur le bord de la route à Combloux. Le leader de l'équipe Soudal-Quick Step a fini 12e provisoire avec plus d'une minute de retard sur Rémi Cavagna.

"J'ai pris beaucoup de plaisir. Je ne sais pas qui va gagner, Pogacar et Vingegaard sont vraiment presque au même niveau, a réagi Julian Alaphilippe après son chrono. Je ne veux pas dire de connerie et on s'en fout de mon avis. Mais je pense plutôt à Pogacar. Les deux se tirent la bourre. L'équipe qui prendra l'avantage va être mise en difficulté dès mercredi."

C'est parti pour Pinot

Treizième du classement général avant cette 16e étape, Thibaut Pinot s'est elancé à Passy. Le Français voudra perdre le moins de temps possible pour tenter d'approcher le Top 10 du général pour son dernier Tour de France.

Van Aert en avance sur Cavagna

Wout van Aert a décidé de rouler à fond dans ce chrono. Le Belge de la Jumbo est passé à 7 secondes de Rémi Cavagna au premier intermédiaire puis a continué d'accélerer.

Après 10km de contre-la-montre, Wout Van Aert possède quelques secondes de mieux que Rémi Cavagna.

Ciccone en tête pour le classement de la montagne

Giulio Ciccone ne visait pas la victoire d'étape ce mardi mais a tout donné dans l'ascension de la Côte de Domancy pour grapiller des points pour le classement de la montagne. L'Italien améliore le temps de Nelson Powless dans cette montée classée en 2e catégorie.

Lutsenko éjecte Kung du Top 5

Le Kazakh de l'équipe Astana termine un peu mieux que Rémi Cavagna dans la dernière ascension mais échoue finalement à la 4e place provisoire à 49 secondes du Français.

Wout Van Aert s'élance

Champion de Belgique du contre-la-montre, Wout Van Aert est parti pour ces 22,4km entre Passy et Combloux. Le Belge pourrait bien faire partie des meilleurs coureurs à l'arrivée à moins que la fatigue ne le rattrappe dans la dernière ascension.

Vingegaard ne devrait pas changer de vélo, Pogacar oui

La victoire d'étape et peut-être le maillot jaune à Paris pourrait se jouer sur ce chrono. Et les deux favoris, Jonas Vingegaard et Tadej Pogacar pourraient bien adopter des stratégies différentes lors de ce contre-la-montre.

Le Danois de l'équipe Jumbo-Visma ne devrait pas changer de vélo au pied de la Côte de Domancy alors que le Slovène de la formation UAE-Emirates devrait le faire afin de faciliter son ascension.

La déception de Kung après son final compliqué

"Oui pour moi c'était le bon choix de changer de vélo car la Côte de Domancy est très raide. Il n'y a pas que le poids qui joue, a expliqué le Suisse de la Groupama-FDJ auprès de France TV [...] Ce n'est pas à cause de cela que je n'ai pas pu jouer avec les meilleurs. J'avais de bonnes sensations au début mais cela m'a lâché. Je pense que c'est un des leaders du général qui va gagner. Je dirais Pogacar sans raison pour la victoire mais c'est du 50-50 avec Vingegaard."

Kung seulement 5e provisoire à Combloux

Longtemps dans le coup pour la victoire, Stefan Kung a craqué sur la fin de ce chrono. Le Suisse en termine à la cinquième place provisoire avec 52 secondes de retard sur Rémi Cavagna.

Le changement de vélo, un choix perdant ?

Stefan Kung a changé de vélo avant la Côte de Domancy mais le Suisse a dit adieux à ses chances de prendre la tête à l'arrivée de cette étape.

Pour le moment, les trois premiers du classement provisoire (Cavagna, Pedersen et Asgreen) n'ont pas changé de vélo. Peut-être unne stratégie à affiner pour les Groupama-FDJ ou pour Tadej Pogacar qui ont tous prévu de changer de vélo avant la dernière ascension de ce chrono.

Kung craque dans la Côte de Domancy

Sous une forte chaleur et malgré un changement de vélo, Stefan Kung a perdu du temps sur Rémi Cavagna dans la Côte de Domancy. Le vice-champion du monde du chrono accuse plus de vingt secondes de retard sur le Français, toujours leader provisoire à l'arrivée.

Julian Alaphilippe s'élance

Julian Alaphilippe s'élance dans ce chrono. Assez peu en vue depuis le début du Tour de France, le coureur tricolore espère faire bonne impression ce mardi. Mais le tracé de ce contre-la-montre ne devrait pas lui permettre de se mêler dans la bataille pour la victoire de cette 16e étape.

Changement de vélo pour Kung, le Suisse est repassé derrière Cavagna

Comme prévu et comme devraient aussi le faire Thibaut Pinot et David Gaudu, Stefan Kung a changé de vélo au pied de la Côte de Domancy.

Le champion de Suisse du contre-la-montre est derrière Rémi Cavagna avant les derniers kilomètres de cette 16e étape. Le Français possède deux secondes d'avance sur Stefan Kung au deuxième intermédiaire.

Kung toujours en avance mais cela se réduit

Stefan Kung possède toujours huit secondes d'avance sur Remi Cavagna à 7km de l'arrivée à Combloux.

Mais le Suisse pourrait perdre un peu de temps afin de changer de vélo au pied de la Côte de Domancy pour la dernière ascension de ce chrono.

Kung en avance sur Cavagna après 10km

Le Suisse de la Groupama-FDJ affiche une belle avance sur Remi Cavagna. Stefan Kung possède une vingtaine de secondes de mieux que le Français et arrive bientôt à la moitié de ce chrono.

A l'arrivée, le champion de France du contre-le-montre reste leader provisoire mais le spécialiste suisse impressionne. 89 coureurs sont arrivés à Combloux.

Pierre Latour le plus rapide dans l'ascension

Le coureur de TotalEnergies signe le meilleur temps dans la côte de Domancy, avec 5" de moins que Wright et Cavagna, mais il coupe la ligne derrière le champion de France.

Pogacar va bien changer de vélo avant la montée

Lafay chute dans les derniers hectomètres.

Vainqueur de la 2e étape du Tour, Victor Lafay est victime d'une chute à quelques mètres de l'arrivée sur un passage piéton. Le coureur Cofidis repart sans trop de dommages.

Asgreen, 3e temps provisoire

Le champion du Danemark du contre-la-montre termine son chrono en 36'17". Le coureur Soudal Quick Step prend la 3e place provisoire à 35" de son équipier Rémi Cavagna.

Le champion de France du chrono fait honneur à son maillot tricolore et confirme les belles performances du jour. Il coupe la ligne en 35'42"44, soit 25" de moins que Pedersen.

Impressionnant dans la dernière difficulté du jour, Mads Pedersen chipe le meilleur temps provisoire avec plus d'une minute d'avance sur Nikias Arndt (36'07"24).

Cavagna continue d'impressioner

Le Français passe au deuxième passage intermédiaire avec 13" d'avance sur Mads Pedersen à 6,3km de l'arrivée. Il a même dépassé son coéquipier Yves Lampaert au pied de la montée de la côte de Domancy alors que le Belge était parti 1'30 avant lui.

Meilleur temps provisoire pour Cavagna au premier passage intermédiaire

Le TGV de Clermont est parti à fond et prend la tête au premier passage intermédiaire avec 3" d'avance sur Pedersen.

Plusieurs coureurs changent de vélo avant la montée de la côte de Domancy

Outre Mikkel Bjerg, en plein repérage pour Tadej Pogacar, le champion de Norvège Søren Wærenskjold a également changé son vélo.

Morkov est le premier à en finir, Zingle meilleur temps

Le coureur de Soudal-Quick-Step coupe la ligne en premier, mais c'est bien le Français Axel Zingle qui prend le meilleur temps provisoire en 39'05"65.

Le départ catastrophique des DSM

Les quatre premiers coureurs de la DSM, formation de Romain Bardet ( qui a abandonné depuis ), ont tous connu des mésaventures en ce début de chrono. John Degenkolb et Nils Eekhoff sont tombés dans le même virage, tandis que Sam Welsford et Alexander Edmonson sont arrivés en retard sur la rampe de lancement.

Nouvelle situation cocasse en ce début de chrono

Après les chutes et les retards, Alexander Kristoff laisse sa place à Florian Vermeers. Le Norvégien est visiblement très pressé de partir.

Un spécialiste du chrono vient de s'élancer

Mikkel Bjerg, le coéquipier de Tadej Pogacar, triple champion du monde espoirs de la spécialité, reste sur une victoire qui lui avait permis d’endosser le maillot jaune du Critérium du Dauphiné à Belmont-sur-Loire. Mais le tracé du jour n'est pas à son avantage avec la montée finale.

Zingle en tête au premier passage intermédiaire

Après la passage de 5 coureurs au km 7,1, le coureur de Cofidis est le plus rapide, avec 51'' de moins que Yevgueniy Fedorov.

Des temps de référence seront établis  à Passy Chef-Lieu (km 7,1), puis au pied (km 16,1) et au sommet de la côte de Domancy (km 18,9). Ces deux derniers points de chronométrage serviront également à définir le classement des grimpeurs de la côte de Domancy, classée en 2e catégorie et offrant donc 5 points au plus rapide de la journée.

Lanterne rouge du classement général, Michael Morkov (Soudal-Quick-Step) est le premier à s'élancer. Les départs se font toutes les minutes, sauf à partir des 14 derniers, qui seront lancés toutes les 1'30.

Premier coup de pédale dans cette 16e étape !

C'est parti pour l'unique contre-la-montre de cette édition. Michael Morkov, la lanterne rouge du général, s'élance pour ses 22,4 km !

On attend évidemment le duel à distance entre Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates) et Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), qui n'ont que dix secondes d'écart, soit le plus faible écart entre les deux premiers depuis 2007. Le Slovène s'élancera à 16h58, le Maillot jaune à 17 heures.

Un petit coup d'œil sur le tracé de cette 16e étape, qui va bientôt démarrer

Les confidences de la maman de pogacar, "sûre que tout se passera bien" pour le slovène.

Marjeta Pogacar, la maman de Tadej Pogacar, a accordé quelques minutes à RMC Sport. Présente en camping-car sur ce Tour de France, avec toute la famille du coureur slovène, elle espère pouvoir donner un surplus de motivation au fiston.

"Nous sommes ici pour supporter Tadej ! Pour lui donner, espérons-le, un peu d’énergie pour mieux monter, assure-t-elle dans la langue de Molière (elle est professeure de français). Je suis sûre que Tadej est assez fort pour supporter tous les efforts et que tout se passera bien."

Jorgenson non-partant

Movistar annonce son 4e abandon du Tour avec Matteo Jorgenson, qui ne s'élancera pas pour le contre-la-montre de ce mardi. Le coureur américain, touché par "une blessure musculaire à la cuisse gauche, ainsi que des douleurs dans la zone de selle", s'était montré à plusieurs reprises à l'avant, notamment sur les pentes du Puy de Dôme.

Le programme de la 16e étape

Fixé en fonction du classement général, l'ordre de passage sur ce contre-la-montre individuel verra donc Michael Morkov s'élancer en premier à 13h05.

Porteur du maillot jaune, Jonas Vingegaard s'élancera en dernier (à 17h00) et seulement deux minutes après Tadej Pogacar (16h58).

Le premier Français, Axel Zingle (Cofidis) partira à 13h09 alors que le coureur tricolore le mieux placé au général, David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) entamera son chrono à 16h44.

Start Times and Order Time Trial. This Tuesday, July 18, the 16th stage of the Tour de France 2023 will take place, an individual time trial of 22.4 kilometers between Passy and Combloux with a quite hard profile that could define the general classification between Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard .
