Liane Lippert (Movistar Team) swept past Fem Van Empel (Team Jumbo Visma) to take the final stage of the Tour de Romandie Féminin on Sunday, landing her first win since victory on stage 2 of the Tour de France Femmes Avec Zwift.

The German national champion timed her move to perfection, with Van Empel holding on for second and Silvia Persico (UAE Team ADQ) taking third.

“I did already on the climb a lot of attacking, and I felt really strong,” she said, explaining how she knew she was on a good day. “I had a great team that covered all the moves so I could really relax and only focus on the fast sprinters. I think I had a good eye for the sprint and confidence in myself, and also I really felt that the team had confidence in me.”

Race leader Demi Vollering (Team SD Worx) finished sixth on the stage, one place ahead of Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM Racing), her closest rival. The duo had started the day just six seconds apart and despite a number of attacks by Niewiadoma, Vollering’s close attention and the relatively uncomplicated course made it impossible for the Polish rider to get a lasting gap.

“It is really nice. In this moment I feel a bit tired because today was a really hard day. It was a big, big battle still for GC and for the stage win, so we needed to be very alert and also really smart to think about what we could close or not.”

Aside from Niewiadoma at six seconds, there were eight other riders within a minute and half of her.

“Still today so much can happen. If Juliette Labous or someone else in the GC rides away and you cannot close it, then you can still lose the GC, for example,” she continued. “That’s something you don’t want to happen, so you need to be very alert the whole day.”

The stage from Vernier to Nyon saw several attacks but while riders such Neve Bradbury (Canyon-SRAM Racing), Mavi García (Liv Racing TeqFind) and Mireia Benito (AG Insurance – Soudal Quick-Step) made big efforts to stay out front, nothing was being allowed to stick.

Things started getting more serious with 35km to go when Niewiadoma kicked clear. While she was caught soon afterwards, a surge in pace by Lippert on the Le Molard climb with 30km to go dragged her, Vollering and Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ-Suez) clear, with Niewiadoma trying to push on alone soon afterwards but being reeled in by the vigilant race leader.

This front group gradually grew in size as the riders returned after the hills. Various moves were fired off, including a short-lived one by Uttrup Ludwig and by Elise Chabbey (Canyon-SRAM Racing) with 20km remaining, plus a 4km solo effort by Tour de France Femmes Avec Zwift stage winner Ricarda Bauernfeind (Canyon-SRAM Racing) which was reeled in Marlen Reusser (Team SD Worx) with 8km to go.

Another move by Steffi Häberlin (Swiss Cycling) was ultimately unsuccessful, with Lippert emerging the best in the final sprint to the line.

Tour de Romandie Féminin stage 2: Vollering outsprints Niewiadoma to seize stage, overall lead

tour de romandie feminin

Tour de France Femmes champion Demi Vollering (SD Worx) raced into the overall lead of the Tour de Romandie Féminin on Saturday, winning the mountainous second stage ahead of Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM).

The Team SD Worx rider notched up her first victory since the Tour, driving the pace on the final climb, pushing ahead with Niewiadoma and then marking the Polish rider inside the last kilometers in the hope that her teammate Marlen Reusser could return and take a home win.

Niewiadoma drove hard to ensure Reusser wouldn’t get across, but had little left for the final sprint, rolling in two seconds down.

“It was a really nice day, and perfect team tactics because we could really gamble,” Vollering said. “I was really gambling for Marlen that she could come back because it would be nice that she could win here. But she didn’t make it, and I could win the sprint from Kasia in the end. I was really happy to take the win.”

Vollering is from the Netherlands but spends a lot of time in Switzerland. She has an ongoing connection to the country but Reusser is herself Swiss. She comes from Jegenstorf, just over 60km from the stage start, and so winning would have meant a lot.

Vollering hopes that her teammate might yet have success. “We still have one day to go, so who knows what is going to happen tomorrow,” she said.

As a sprinter, stage one winner Sofia Bertizzolo (UAE Team ADQ) was always destined to lose the race lead on Saturday’s stage. She struggled early on and was distanced, the tight time gaps meaning the stage winner would almost certainly take over at the top too.

Bertizzolo’s teammate Silvia Persico, Anna Shackley (Team SD Worx) and Amber Kraak (Team Jumbo-Visma) attacked inside the final 30km and while Kraak slid back with 12m to go, the other two persisted until just under 6km remaining.

Vollering then hit the gas inside the final 4km, drawing Niewiadoma clear and ultimately winning out when it came down to a sprint.

The WorldTour event concludes on Sunday with a lumpy 131.9km stage to Nyon. It includes four third-category climbs but then a downhill to flat run in to the line, making a large group sprint possible.

With time bonuses factored in, Vollering is six seconds clear of Niewiadoma and 12 in front of Reusser.

“Of course the goal is to win it as a team, so if I can keep it [the jersey] it is good,” she said. “But it would be also nice if Marlen can win tomorrow, of course. Let’s see how it goes. The most important thing is that the jersey stays with the team.”

Niewiadoma will keep trying, even if she would prefer harder terrain on Sunday. Her last victory was in 2019, but a huge number of second and third places shows success is long overdue.

Tour de Romandie Féminin stage 1: Bertizzolo denies Schrempf’s audacious attack

2nd Tour de Romandie Féminin 2023 - Stage 1

Sofia Bertizzolo (UAE ADQ) denied Carina Schrempf ( Fenix-Deceuninck ) with a surging late acceleration to win the opening stage of the Tour de Romandie Féminin.

Bertizzolo blazed past Schrempf after the Austrian made an audacious solo attack 3km from the line and nipped victory by centimeters in what was a heartbreaker final.

Both Bertizzolo and second-place Schrempf looked like they could barely believe the result at the line, particularly after the latter suffered the agony of seeing her half-formed victory celebration rudely derailed.

Mischa Bredewold ( SD Worx ) finished third on podium.

Oh man, it’s so so close on the line! If Schrempf had gone full gas she’d have taken it no problem but celebrated and lost by centimetres! #TDRF #TDRF2023 pic.twitter.com/xLIEZbP39c — Mathew Mitchell (@MatMitchell30) September 15, 2023

The sprinters saw their best chance at a win on Friday’s lightly lumpy profile.

A mountaintop finish and more complicated classics style stage loom on the horizon this weekend and limit opportunities for a bunch kick.

Clara Honsinger ( EF Education TIBCO-SVB ) was given room to go solo through the opening hours of the stage before she was reeled back in ahead of an explosive final 40km.

Kasia Niewiadoma , Elise Chabbey (both Canyon-SRAM ), and Marlen Reusser (SD Worx) were among a flurry of attackers to try their luck on the final collection of climbs, and moves from Jumbo-Visma and DSM-Firmenich added to the aggression.

Mavi Garcia (Liv Racing Teqfind) was part of a dangerous group that briefly got clear inside the final 10km, but the peloton wasn’t letting it get far.

Jumbo-Visma drilled the massed group into the finish in Yverdon-les-Bains.

Schrempf launched her all-or-nothing charge out of a sweeping bend inside the final 3km, and the Austrian held a beyond-belief lead over the charging peloton through the complicated run in to the line.

Schrempf hit the final hundred meters with the bunch breathing just meters over her shoulder.

The 28-year-old looked seconds away from the tightest of victories and pulled up from her handlebars, mid-victory salute. But Bertizzolo’s stunning surge out of the peloton pipped Schrempf at the line in what was the ultimate heartbreaker final.

Niewiadoma, Demi Vollering (SD Worx), Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ Suez), Ashleigh Moolman Pasio (AG Insurance Soudal Quick Step), and Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl Trek) will see their chances Saturday in the 11km summit finish on Torgon in the Tour de Romandie Féminin.

Tour de Romandie

  • Dates 15 Sept - 17 Sept
  • Race Length 386 kms
  • Race Category Elite Women

First raced in 2022, the Tour de Romandie Féminin is a recent addition to the Women’s WorldTour and serves as the last elite-level stage race in Europe.

As such, the race will draw to a close the road racing season for many of the world’s best riders, providing a final opportunity to those who missed on big victories at stage races such as the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift and the only other Swiss stage race on the Women’s WorldTour, the Tour de Suisse Women .

Taking to the start of the Tour de Romandie Féminin will be 14 Women’s WorldTour teams, two Women’s Continental teams and one Swiss national team, with SD Worx arguably the team to beat as ever. The leaders of the UCI’s Team World Rankings - by some distance - are heading into the final WorldTour stage race of the season with another stellar lineup, likely to be spearheaded by the reigning Tour de France Femmes champion, Demi Vollering . However, they will no doubt face stiff competition from the likes of dsm-firmenich , Lidl-Trek and FDJ-Suez , amongst others.

This year’s edition will span three days between September 15th and 17th and feature three stages in the French-speaking part of western Switzerland.

Date: September 15-17, 2023

Country: Switzerland

Category: 2. WWT

Editions: 1 (as of 2022)

First winner: Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio

The defending champion heading into the Tour de Romandie Féminin is Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step), but the South African will face stiff competition from the likes of Demi Vollering (SD Worx), Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ-SUEZ) and Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek).

Race history

The Tour de Romandie is a race steeped in history on the men’s side of the sport, but very much less so in the women’s peloton. The men’s Tour de Romandie raced its 76th edition earlier this year, whilst the Tour de Romandie Féminin only began last season.

Hosted as a three-day stage race to end the WorldTour stage racing season in Europe, the race was a welcome addition to the calendar and produced an exciting edition won by Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio. Headlined by the summit finish atop Thyon 2000 on the second day, it was here that the South African sowed the seeds of her victory, winning alone and riding into the lead of the race.

The first stage had been won by Arlenis Sierra in a small group sprint, whilst Moolman-Pasio secured the overall victory on the final day by finishing in the peloton as Marta Lach took the stage honours. Behind the SD Worx in the GC, Annemiek van Vleuten and Elisa Longo Borghini finished second and third, respectively, with dsm-firmenich’s Liane Lippert taking the young rider classification.

Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) and Moolman-Pasio (AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step) will be back at the Tour de Romandie Féminin this year, but can either of them upset the SD Worx apple cart?

Tour de Romandie Féminin 2022 preview - Route, predictions and contenders

The final instalment of the Women’s WorldTour has a stellar line-up

Words: Rachel Jary

For the first time ever, the women’s peloton have the opportunity to race the Tour de Romandie in 2022. Taking place from October 7-9, the race spans three stages, with the standout spectacle being on stage two, when the peloton will climb to the summit of Thyon 2000. On either side of this mountain day, there are two rolling stages which will provide a good opportunity for some aggressive, attacking racing.

The majority of the biggest stars in the women’s peloton are expected to be on the startline in Lausanne where the race kicks off, including newly-crowned World Champion Annemiek van Vleuten. She’ll be challenged by the likes of Elisa Longo Borghini, Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig, and Demi Vollering and we can expect a fierce battle between the best climbers in the bunch for the honour of being crowned the first ever winner of the Tour de Romandie Féminin.

Read on for everything you need to know about the 2022 Tour de Romandie Féminin, including Rouleur ’s prediction of the race winner.

Route and stages

STAGE ONE - LAUSANNE LUTRY TO LAUSANNE QUAI D'OUCHY, 134.4KM

tour de romandie feminin

Image:  Tour de Romandie Féminin

The first stage of the Tour de Romandie Féminin kicks off in Lausanne with a punchy route which levels out at the end. Riders are hit with the first, third-category climb just 8km into the stage, and this is closely followed by a second ascent, meaning there will be little recovery time for the lesser climbers in the peloton. The stage continues roll for the next 37 kilometres, which could give time for a breakaway to establish itself or we might see a regroup of the main peloton. Another third category climb comes after 56 kilometres of racing, and then two more follow after 90 kilometres and 105 kilometres of racing respectively. With approximately 24 kilometres to go, the peloton will descend back towards Lausanne before a flat 14 kilometre run-in to the finish.

While the final climb of the day could provide a springboard for some brave attacks, the final stretch to the finish line could prove difficult for a lone rider or small breakaway. This means that today could be a stage for those who are able to hold on to the wheels over the climbs but can pack a punch at the finish. None of the climbs are so challenging that they will cause time splits and the general classification is unlikely to be decided today, but in a three-day stage race, these repeated efforts could cause fatigue in the tail-end of the event.

STAGE TWO - SION TO THYON 2000, 104.5KM

tour de romandie feminin

Stage two is the queen stage of the 2022 Tour de Romandie Féminin, and we can expect to see a fierce GC battle all the way to the top of Thyon 2000 which sits at an altitude of 2100 metres. The first 54 kilometres of the stage are tame, with one third category climb the only obstacle for riders. It’s on the first category climb to Suen that the race will kick off – the riders summit this ascent with 35 kilometres still remaining. After some brief respite and the final feed zone on the stage, the riders start the main event of stage two: the climb to Thyon 2000.

The climb is 20.5 kilometres long at an average gradient of 7.7%. The incline is unrelenting to the top, with a maximum gradient of 11.9%. It is here that the overall winner of the Tour de Romandie Féminin could be decided: there will be big splits on the way to the summit and it is going to be a fight for survival for many riders. The last time the Women’s WorldTour saw climbs of such a distance was in the inaugural edition of the Tour de France Femmes , where Annemiek van Vleuten won in a dominating fashion. It’s going to be a challenge for the other teams to stop her doing that on Thyon 2000, too, but many of them will be forced to think creatively to prevent her from taking the win, that may be by opening up the race early or trying to establish a strong breakaway that Movistar will find it difficult to control.

STAGE THREE - FRIBOURG TO GENEVA, 146.6KM

tour de romandie feminin

With the fatigue from the gruelling ascent of Thyon 2000 in their legs, the riders will be grateful for a relatively tame start to the third and final stage of the 2022 Tour de Romandie Féminin. The first 30 kilometres are flat and lead into a descent to the bottom of the opening climb of the stage: Villars-Le-Comte. A second category climb, this is the main obstacle of the day for the sprinters, but it comes early enough in the stage that it there is plenty of time for them to regain contact with the front bunch. It could be that time splits on the GC are so large after stage two that there won’t be a GC fight on this stage, providing a prime opportunity for a breakaway.

For the next 78 kilometres, the route is mostly flat with a few small kickers, but nothing that is going to cause any big gaps in the peloton. With 33 kilometres remaining in the stage, the peloton face a short third category climb, before a steady flat finish which is slightly downhill. Today is likely to be a day for a bunch sprint, unless there is an especially breakaway group that manages to fend off the storming lead out trains.

Unsurprisingly, Annemiek van Vleuten sits at the forefront of the key favourites for the 2022 Tour de Romandie Féminin. This will be the Movistar rider’s first outing in her rainbow stripes after her emphatic win at the World Championships in Wollongong a few weeks ago. She won that race with a broken elbow, and she’s likely to be close to fully recovered from that injury the Tour de Romandie, so she’s going to be firing on all cylinders and hard to beat, especially with the added motivation of wearing the rainbow stripes. The climb up to Thyon 2000 is where the Dutchwoman will make the difference and it’s going to be up to the others to hang on to her wheel.

tour de romandie feminin

Demi Vollering of Team SD Worx is another contender for the overall victory, although her form is unknown after a recent bout of Covid-19 forced her to miss the World Championships. Vollering was the closest challenger to Van Vleuten at the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, but her compatriot did get the better of her on the long mountains. Vollering’s advantage could come from her strong SD Worx team – she’ll be supported by the likes of Ashleigh Moolman (who showed incredible form at the Worlds a few weeks ago) and Anna Shackley who are both contenders for victory in their own right.

tour de romandie feminin

Both Vollering and Van Vleuten’s plans could be scuppered by the French team FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope, however. They come with a triple-pronged attack in the form of Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig , Évita Muzic and Marta Cavalli , all talented climbers who can also sprint at the end of a hard race. Likewise, Liane Lippert of Team DSM was one of the strongest climbers at the recent World Championships and was unlucky to miss out on a medal, this could make the young German even more motivated for victory at the 2022 Tour de Romandie Féminin. Recent winner of Giro dell’Emilia, Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek-Segafredo) is another big contender for victory.

Veronica Ewers of EF-Education Tibco SVB recently finished second in the Giro dell’Emilia and will be suited to the parcours in Romandie, and Yara Kastelijn of Plantur-Pura is another outside bet for the overall or a stage win.

Annemiek van Vleuten may be the bookies’ favourite, but we’re going to take a risk and predict that Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig of FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope will take victory at the 2022 Tour de Romandie Féminin. The Danish rider showed great form at the World Championships and if FDJ work well together, they could put Van Vleuten under pressure as she doesn’t have such a strong team. Uttrup Ludwig missed some racing earlier in the season so doesn’t look to be carrying the fatigue that hits many riders towards the end of the year, and she will be motivated to finish the season on a high.

We’re not crying over these pics 🥹 no wait… we absolutely are. What an incredible win for Alison Jackson and the entire squad 💓 pic.twitter.com/0qDNCrUoyh — EF Education–Cannondale (@EF_Cannondale) April 29, 2024

« En abordant la Vuelta Femenina, j’avais le feu sacré et je savais que j’allais faire tout ce qu’il fallait pour remporter cette victoire, a déclaré Jackson à la suite de l’épreuve. L’équipe a vraiment cru en moi, du personnel aux coureurs, et j’ai pris cela à cœur. Une victoire dans la Vuelta Femenina est une autre bonne chose à mettre sur mon CV. »

Tour de Romandie: Carlos Rodríguez wins overall

Dorian Godon wins rainy final stage

Dorion Godon (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) took his second win of the week at the Tour de Romandie to round out the race with another triumph on a wet day out in Vernier.

The Frenchman outpaced Simone Consonni (Lidl-Trek) and Dion Smith (Intermarché-Wanty), going long to get the jump on his rivals in the reduced bunch finish.

After ascending to the race lead on Saturday's stage 4 to Leysin, Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos Grenadiers) secured the overall victory to take the first stage race victory of his career. The Spaniard beat Bora-Hansgrohe Aleksandr Vlasov and Florian Lipowitz by seven and nine seconds respectively to seal the win.

The day was always likely to be one decided by the fast men, even with seven ascents of the 1.6km Dardagny climb lying in wait on the largely circuit-based final stage.

Attacks flew at the front after the break of the day was brought back inside the final 30km, but things came back together as the likes of UAE Team Emirates, Lidl-Trek, and Visma-Lease A Bike controlled the peloton for the final dash to the line.

In the end, the riders those teams had hoped to set up were caught behind as the final bend loomed, and it was instead Godon who launched himself from the front to take a largely uncontested win.

Further back in the 67-man group, Rodríguez crossed the line safely with the overall victory and the best young rider prize in the bag. Godon's win saw him overhaul Decathlon AG2R teammate Andrea Vendrame for the points jersey, while Juri Hollmann (Alpecin-Deceuninck) came away with the mountain classification win.

How it unfolded

The final stage of the 2024 Tour de Romandie would take the riders on a 151km route based on four laps of a hilly 35km circuit in Vernier. The main challenge of the day would be the 1.6km, 4% climb of Dardagny, coming three times during the stage, though nothing likely to trouble the main GC names – aside from potential time bonuses at the top of the general classification.

The day began with a strong breakaway going early as Rémi Cavagna (Movistar) jumped from the flag. He was quickly caught but was soon off again after 20km of racing. The Frenchman was joined in the attack by Darren Rafferty (EF Education-EasyPost), Marco Brenner (Tudor), and Alexandre Balmer (Swiss National Team).

Counter-attacks from Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-QuickStep) and Jan Tratnik (Visma-Lease A Bike) didn't disrupt the move, and so the quartet got away up the road with a gap of two minutes.

Behind them, Ineos Grenadiers kept things on a tight leash on behalf of new GC leader Carlos Rodríguez, while Lidl-Trek were also up there working to keep the time gap at two minutes.

It would be a hard task for the breakaway to stay away to the line with the fast men of the peloton keen to contest the final stage victory of the race, and so it proved as the peloton closed in to under 1:30 as the riders hit the final 60km.

Cavagna wouldn't be resigned to the breakaway's fate, however, and sought to push on alone. The 'TGV from Clermont-Ferrand' pushed on alone with 46km left to run, leaving his break mates behind as he went in search of a 14th career victory.

He'd be alone for 15km before Rafferty and Brenner came back up to him for the final ascent of Dardagny. There, Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) went on the attack from the peloton, causing a split as riders behind sought to shut things down.

The break would be brought back just inside the 30km to go mark, with Cavagna unsurprisingly being awarded the final combativity prize of the race for his efforts. More attacking came soon after, though, with former race leader Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) among those on the move, even if the move came to nought.

The final 20km saw Enzo Paleni (Groupama-FDJ) and Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) on the move, though the pair were unsuccessful in their efforts. Martin and Michael Valgren (EF Education-EasyPost) would make moves inside the final 10km, but with Lidl-Trek taking charge for stage 2 winner Thibau Nys, it would all come down to the final sprint finish.

The sprint to the finish was a disorganised one, however, with Nys and several other key contenders caught too far back to affect things at the front.

In the end, it was Godon who had the perfect run around the final bend, accelerating away from his rivals to close out his Tour de Romandie with a second stage victory.
