Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Try Van Life – How To Rent A Camper Van (and why)

tour guide and van rental

Dreaming about Van Life? We were too! After making the transition from home owners to living full time in a van (2 years and still loving it) , we highly recommend camper rental before taking the leap. Here are 5 reasons why!

Reason #1 For Camper Rental: Reality Check

Camper Rental Vanlife Reality

Aspiring influencers use their special skills to sugarcoat reality and make you believe 95% of vanlife is spent bikini-showering in the back of their van, watching the sunset from their bed or having romantic candle light dinners.

After 2 years living in our van, it’s fair to say we know a thing or two about the reality of Vanlife. Sometimes it’s like the Instagram, sometimes it’s more like:

  • Showering in the back of our van, feet in mud and our bodies exposed to the wind.
  • Not watching the sunset from our bed, because there's a bunch of stuff up there.
  • We actually do romantic candle light dinners. We also have conversations while using the composting toilet like it's perfectly normal.

Rent a camper and experience the real Vanlife, so your expectations meet reality!

Arrow-down

Reason #2: Decide on a Van Layout

FarOutRide Garage Van Conversion

What you think is the perfect van layout could turn into a less-than-functional box. You see, creating a functional kitchen (or living room, or bedroom) is totally different in 100 sq.ft. than in 1800 sq.ft. You’d be surprised!

Keep in mind that everyone has different needs. For example, we mountain bike or snowboard almost everyday so we optimized our layout around that. If you like to hike, or paddle, or play video games, you might not need all that garage space and you’d need a completely different van layout than us.

So look around and take notes on different layouts that people have (check out  Vanlife Ideas on Instagram and check our own Van Tour). Then go for a camper rental that fit your interests the most; it might take 2 or 3 iterations, but it’s a wise investment if it means finding YOUR perfect layout!

Arrow-down-curved-2

Reason #3 to rent a van: Learn what are your irritants

Van Conversion Curtain Divider for Cold Draft

Devil’s in the details. Small irritants can affect your Vanlife in a bad way, especially if they’re repetitive. It gets into your head. Here is a list of weird irritant you might not have suspected:

  • Having to setup the bed each day (folding beds).
  • Trash can too small (so we end up having a trash bag in the alley 50% of the time).
  • Not enough storage compartments.
  • No dedicated shoe mat.

Arrow-down-left

Reason #4: Get to know the vanlife routine

Winter Vanlife Cooking

It’s all fun and games until the routine kicks in… Being off-the-grid means you’ll necessarily run out of water at some point; and being nomad means you’ll necessarily spend some time looking for water, which can sometimes be nerve wracking as water is SO essential. Here are more routine stuff to expect:

  • Find where to dump the toilet.
  • Find dumpsters for your trash.
  • Constantly fight the dust.
  • Constantly fight the mess (things get disorganized in a blink of an eye in small spaces!).
  • Wash the dishes as you go, or else it means living in your dirty dishes.
  • Tide things up each time you're going to drive the van (things are attracted to the floor, for some reasons).

Reason #5: Build (or buy) Once

Van Conversion Thinsulate Insulation

Getting your dream camper van is a big investment of money and time (if going the DIY way). Not convinced? We tracked down all the cost and labor of our entire van conversion ; we also obsessively documented all the build process in our Build Journal (step-by-step). That’ll give you a good idea of what you’re getting into if going the DIY way:

A perk of travelling in a van means meeting other Vanlifers; van tours are almost part of the routine! 🙂 There’s a story that we hear all the time: people building (or buying) a van, only to find out they’re unhappy with it… and they start all over again! We’d rather be travelling than building or shopping for a new van.

There you have it. Camper Rental is without a doubt a good time and money investment if you're serious about getting into Vanlife!

I own a 34′ power boat with a Multiplus 2000 12v Inverter/Charger. It is used to charge our four (4) Crown 6CRV20 6v AGM deep cycle batteries. The 4 batteries are set up as 2 sets of 2 batteries each wired in Series. The two sets are wired in Parallel to produce a total 12v bank with 520 Ah. My question has to do the Multiplus settings in the example on your website at . I have two questions… First, would the settings in your example apply in general to my Crown AGM deep cycle batteries? Second, I’m particularly interested in the 4 AC settings in the GRID section and the 3 DC settings in the INVERTER section. I’ve just seen/heard too many different voltage numbers tossed out for those AC and DC settings. Please note that I’m comfortable with all the rest of my Multiplus settings. I also have and know how to use the Victron MK3 dongle for accessing and adjusting the settings and updating firmware (currently 508 on my Multiplus). I’d appreciate any input you can offer.

Hi! First of all, thanks for a great website with TONS of useful and inspiring articles, love your site and the way you combine information with humor! 🙂 My name is Philip, I live in Sweden with my girlfriend Emmi and we’ve built two campervans which we use for adventures like skiing, kitesurfing and mountainbiking. We (or mostly Emmis to be honest!) also run explorista.se, a Swedish blog that’s probably the biggest Vanlife blog in Sweden, have a look with google translate if you’d like! 🙂 We don’t live full time like you guys but we plan to do some longer trips for about 6 months or so.

That’s also why I wanted to contact you guys, since we’re planning on traveling to North America this fall (if the Corona-situation admits) for an epic campervan adventure. Since it’s a bit of a hassle (and expensive!) to ship our own van, our plan is to rent a campervan or RV from October for up to six months and travel through US and Canada!

I’ve read your posts about cool skiing and mtb destinations and I got really inspired! The difficult part is to find a good long term rental that’s not too expensive, and I was wondering if you could help us with a few answers?

Is your recommendation still outdoorsy, or could you recommend any other site och group where we could find a nice van/RV to rent? I’ve done some searches on outdoorsy and didn’t really find too much, maybe October is too far off to search for? In which city/state would you recommend to search in? Is there typically more campervans/RVs on the westcoast or eastcoast?

Again, thanks a lot for your awesome site and I look forward to hearing from you soon!

I’m not sure about all of your questions, but for such a long period it’ll cost a lot to rent. Have you consider buying and re-selling a van instead? I feel like that would be your best option…

The 13 Best Overland & Camper Van Rental Companies in USA

Whether looking for a hotel suite on wheels or just a rooftop tent, there's an adventure-ready rig out there for you

The 13 Best Overland & Camper Van Rental Companies in USA

Geoff Nudelman

Geoff Nudelman

If you’re a regular on Field Mag, you likely well aware of the ongoing camper van and overland trend. And with 2020 dragging on with no end in sight, road trip upgrades are very “of the moment”.

Long before #vanlife became a hashtag, there have been companies renting RVs, trailers, and vans of varying sizes and capabilities to anyone looking for a little (or a lot) more in their car camping experience. While the 13 options below are by no means an exhaustive list, they do represent a good mix of what’s out there and what you can likely find in a region near you.

Rental camper vans and overland rigs are an awesome way to see the country, but it’s also worth noting that these are atypical vehicle rentals and mandatory extra charges like insurance and service fees can add up fast. So, if you’re budget-minded, be sure to take a look at the whole package before signing on. Then do so and have a dang good time.

Cascade-Adventure-Vans-Credit-Reagan-Aleea

Cascade Adventure Vans - Seattle, WA

Rent this: 2019 sprinter camper van.

If you’ve done any road tripping around the Pacific Northwest, you’ve likely seen one of Cascade’s custom Sprinter build-outs. The company has four options available with varying capacities for sleeping, outdoor cooking, and general gear carrying. Perhaps the coolest feature are the adjustable “elevator beds” that increase or decrease sleeping levels based on individual need.

Price: $615/3 nights (Oct-April)

texino-2019-metris-credit-molly-steele

Texino - Los Angeles, CA

Rent this: 2019 mercedes metris.

Texino is widely known for integrating stylish, practical design features into straightforward Sprinter or Metris van, making it one of the most useful, camping-ready options out there. Pick from their custom-built rental fleet to reap all the rewards of van life without the regular maintenance. (Or buy one of their custom rigs to go full send.)

Price: $215/night

bohemian-highway-travel-co-land-rover-defender

Bohemian Highway Travel Co. - Sonoma, CA

Rent this: land rover defender 110.

You could do much, much worse than exploring wine country in either Land Rover Defender 110 from Bohemian Highway’s two-rig fleet. Our favorite model is built more to be enjoyed during the day with plenty of space to haul sleeping gear for a night under the stars (and that second bottle of Cabernet).

Price: $300/night

Pacific-Overlander-4Runner-Credit-Elliot-Hawkley

Pacific Overlander - Las Vegas, NV & San Francisco, CA

Rent this: 4runner trd offroad with xv-2 xventure trailer.

When you think about that quintessential 4x4 camper experience, you’d probably come up with something close to Pacific Overlander. They have the slick, outdoors-inspired logo, the rugged reputation, and six vehicles of varying capabilities—plus an adventure trailer. They’ll even do one-way rentals, making most of the western U.S. your oyster.

Price: $195/night (4Runner), $100/night (trailer)

Wandervan-medium-van

Wandervans - Boise, SLC, PDX

Rent this: ford transit van.

For those looking for the no-frills approach, Wandervans has a done a nice job of outfitting Ford Transit vans with enough comfort to sleep inside the van while doing most of your living outside of it. The three western cities they operate out of offers a nice mix of locales to enjoy said basic comfort as well.

Price: $111/night

Outdoorsy-ford-e350

Outdoorsy - Tempe, AZ

Rent this: 1999 ford e350 high top super duty xl.

Without being too schmaltzy, Outdoorsy is “the AirBnB of the RV market,” offering a range of camper vans, fifth wheels, and even class A motorhomes that owners offer for rent with a few simple clicks. They have myriad options across the country and there’s likely one not too far from where you’re sitting right now.

Price: $149/night

Reparadise-mercedes-camper

Overland-Discovery

Overland Discovery - Denver, CO

Rent this: explorer plus dodge ram promaster.

Overland Discovery carries three different types of camping vehicles—Jeeps, regular vans, and small RVs. Anything in their fleet would be a fine partner to explore Colorado with, but we especially like what they’ve done with their Dodge Ram ProMaster conversions.

“Vietnamdrive arranged cars and drivers to take the three of us from Danang to Hanoi, with stops of from one to three days in each of Hue, Phong Nha, and Cua Lo. Then, after our week in Hanoi, other drivers picked us up and took us south again, with overnight or longer stops in Ninh Binh, Ha Tinh, Dong Hoi, Hoi An, Quang Ngai, Nha Trang, Da Lat, and Mui Ne en route to Ho Chi Minh City. The itinerary that Golda helped us perfect avoided overlong driving days and allowed us to see the country in comfort, and we enjoyed the entire experience.”

Rents Are Taking ‘Baby Steps’ Toward Lower Prices in a Small Victory for Tenants

Rents are continuing to come down—although they remain well above their pre-pandemic levels in a painful reality for tenants.

Nationally, the median asking rent was $1,722 in March in the 50 largest U.S. metros, according to the latest Realtor.com® rent report . That was down 0.3%, or $5, from one year ago, and was just 2%, or $36, less than the all-time high reached in August 2022.

“It’s not bad news for renters, but it’s also not exciting news,” says Realtor.com economist  Jiayi Xu . “Rent is declining, so it’s an improvement. But it’s very baby steps.”

The report looked at rents for studios and one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, condos, townhomes, and single-family homes in the 50 largest metropolitan areas. (Metros include the main city and surrounding towns, suburbs, and smaller urban areas.)

However, rents were up $14 from February. Prices typically rise seasonally as the weather warms up.

And despite eight straight months of year-over-year declines , rents remain well above the levels seen before the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a trend that continues to squeeze household budgets and has contributed significantly to inflation running hotter than the Federal Reserve’s 2% target .

In March, the U.S. median rent was still $313 higher than the same month in 2019, an increase of 22.2%.

Where are rents rising the fastest?

While rents fell nationally, they were still rising in certain parts of the country.

Last month, rents rose 0.4% on the year in the West. It marked the region’s first annual rent increase after 13 months in a row of declines.

Prices were up 2.9% in  San Diego and 1.6% in Los Angeles in March. They were among the Western metros that saw annual rental growth in March, while prices dipped 3.2% in Phoenix and 1.9% in Denver .

Rents also continued to rise annually in most major Northeast metros. High-priced markets such as New York City and Boston continued to see rapid rent increases at 3.8% and 3.3% respectively. Meanwhile, Philadelphia posted a modest annual decline of 0.6%.

In the Midwest, median rents were flat from one year ago. Median asking rents declined 1.5% in the South, where a construction boom has helped boost the supply of rental units.

Southern cities with the biggest annual declines in rent included Austin, TX (-4.7%), Memphis, TN (-4.4%), and Atlanta (-3.7%).

“We’re seeing a higher number of new multifamily completions in the South region,” says Xu. “In the Northeast, where we don’t have a lot of land, there’s very limited construction , so the rent is still increasing.”

Which units experienced the largest rent declines?

Last month, asking rents for all sizes of units dropped on an annual basis. However, studios posted the fastest decline.

Median rents for studios were $1,435 for March, down 1.4% on the year. It marked the seventh consecutive month of annual declines for studio rents, which are now down by 3.7%, or $55, from their October 2022 peak. Nevertheless, the median asking rent for studios was still up 17.6%, or $215, from five years ago.

Two-bedroom rents dropped 0.5% on the year, to $1,435, marking the eighth consecutive month of annual declines. The March decline for two-bedrooms was a slowdown from the 0.8% annual decline in February.

The rent for one-bedroom units dipped a modest 0.1% in March from a year ago, to $1,602. That was $31 lower than the peak observed last August, but still up $290, or 22.1%, from March 2019.
