Blairsville Ga: A Stunning Mountain Town Filled With Family Adventure
In our current world, busy-ness is glorified. The busier you are, the more important you must be, right?
But do you remember….When we used to talk to each other in person ? When we didn’t get our messages until vacation was over… from a machine back at home ?
Remember when family time meant playing games in the evening, catching fireflies, dancing to music, singing songs, and watching the birds fly through the tree canopies?
It’s not too late; you can re-live those moments in Blairsville GA.
Take a break from the busyness of life, from the concrete jungle, from cellphones and video games…..and unplug in Blairsville, Georgia , part of the Chattahoochee National Forest.
Take the #urbanchallenge, and unplug today. Reconnect with your family. Sometimes slow is just the perfect speed. We’ve got dozens of ways for you to turn off the noise, and revive that close family feeling.
TRAILS AND WATERFALLS IN BLAIRSVILLE GA
Helton Creek Falls. Helton Creek gets my vote for best family-friendly waterfall in Georgia. It’s only a short walk from the parking lot, and the lower falls offer plenty of flat sandy surface for younger kids to play in. We regularly visit, and can easily spend an entire day here. Don’t skip the view of the upper falls, too.
Insider Tip : You can slide on the rocks in the lower falls, and older kiddos will love the swimming hole offered at the base of the upper falls!
Take a Ride with A Step Above Stables . Breathtaking stables at A Step Above offer the perfect opportunity for a family trail ride. We love that they are open everyday of the year (except Christmas.) You can pick three different levels of trail riding, ranging from $35-60 per person (1 or 2 hours,) and there are pony rides for little ones.
Guided tours lead you through the mountains and around gorgeous Lake Nottely . Another reason to love them? Heavier riders and young children can be accommodated! We recommend a reservation.

Blood Mountain . Blood Mountain is one of my favorite north Georgia mountain hikes for families. The views are unmatched. Kids will adore the boulders and the AT shelter along the route. It’s a moderate hike, but well worth the effort. You might even run into an AT hiker or two (so maybe pack a few extra candy bars to hand out.)

Vogel State Park . Vogel sits at the base of Blood Mountain and offers beautiful Lake Trahlyta. You’ll find water activities, mini golf, a man-made (but still pretty) waterfall, and more! The proximity to Helton Creek Falls, Mountain Crossing and the Downtown district make this a great place to lay your head for the weekend. Cottages, campsites and primitive backpacking sites provide a range of overnight accommodations. Cottages, campsites and primitive backpacking sites provide a range of overnight accommodations. Ask about the newly renovated cabins. We stayed at one right on a stream bed, which kept my boys occupied well into the evening.

Brasstown Bald . Take a short hike (or shuttle) to the summit for idyllic views of Georgia, Tennessee, and North and South Carolina. A visit is great any time of year, but especially spectacular in Fall. Just remember that as Georgia’s highest point, the leaves turn earlier here than in other parts of the state. Don’t skip the museum and movie at the visitor’s center up top. Brasstown Bald is the highest peak in the United States state of Georgia at 4,784 feet. It is located in the northeastern part of the state in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the border between Towns and Union counties south of the city of Hiawassee.

Nottely Reservoir Trail. This waterfront hike just opened a few years ago and is a local favorite. Whether you would like to stroll, hike or bike, enjoy a moderate 1.7 miles of wooded trails that meander around beautiful Lake Nottely. Access to the Trail is approximately 1 mile past Nottely Dam on the left when coming from 129.

LAKES AND MARINAS IN BLAIRSVILLE GEORGIA
Lake Nottely . The most glorious lake in Blairsville has to be 4,000+ acre Lake Nottely . The kids will adore fishing here, with largemouth bass, spotted bass, crappie, and striped bass, and more. The lake is also neat because the 106 miles of shoreline are pristine – no construction detracts from incredible views of Mother Nature. Don’t miss getting a cabin here – there are some great options on Airbnb.
You can bring your own boat or rent a pontoon, jet skis, kayaks and more from local marinas and outfitters like Nottely Marina, Nottely Boat Club, or North Georgia Water Sports.
Lake Winfield Scott. At only 18-acres, this lake packs a lot of fun in a small space. Visit the recreation area for camping , picnicking, boating, fishing, swimming and hiking. They also offers Paddleboard rentals, so you can try your hand at this new sport.
Insider Tip : The wonders of Lake Winfield Scott have not yet been discovered by most, so you’ll find it to be an uncrowded camping location. Plus, it’s a great place to ride bikes!
Lake Trahlyta. This pretty lake is the centerpiece of Vogel State Park. We love waking up from a slumber at the park and enjoying coffee on the lake’s bank…with an amazing cover of fog dusting the horizon. You can walk the perimeter of the lake easily, enjoy fishing here, or take out one of the peddle boats. Don’t miss the walk to Trahlyta Falls that are created from the lake.
HIDDEN GEMS IN BLAIRSVILLE GA
Track Rock Gap. Imagine reading a story told by Cherokee Indians over 1,000 years ago! You can do that at Track Rock Gap. We made this pit-stop by accident, and I am so glad we did! Tucked into the mountain side, you can see rock carvings, or petroglyphs, in the soapstone.
Tips from the website: Track Rock Gap is open to public visitation and no fee is charged. We have several suggestions to enhance your visit. Please print the drawings of the boulders on this site to take with you. This will help you to identify the figures you see at the site. Intensity of natural lighting can influence how much you are able to see. Bright mid-day sun makes it hard to see most of the figures, and the best times to visit are early or late in the day, when the light is at a low angle. Please be respectful of other visitors and the people who made these carvings. Previous visitors removed pieces of the boulders, thus depriving future visitors of the chance to see what they thought was so special.
I admit, it is a small selection….maybe not worthy of a special trip (unless you’re a budding archeologist specializing in Native American petroglyphs,) but if you are in Blairsville, this is a must-see. At first, we had a difficult time detecting the etchings, but here is another little tip….when we held the camera phone over the rock, the highlights and shadows became more apparent on the phone screen. With that information, our eyes adjusted to better pick them up on the rocks.
I encourage you to watch the video and read about the boulders before you go. I wish we had done this…it would have made for a more rich experience for the kiddos…but it was still amazing. Good stories never die.
Byron Herbert Reece Farm. Explore the farm of this famous poet, take a hike and stroll along the gorgeous creek.
Byron Herbert Reece Farm and Heritage Center is just a few miles from Vogel State Park. It had just been open a short time when we stopped in for a visit. We started in the Visitor Center, which doubled as a gift shop and museum. The boys like the old fashioned spinning wheel here.
Want to keep the kids occupied? Send them on a scavenger hunt to find items we used before computers and iPhones….can they locate a typewriter? A radio? A telephone? (Do they even know what those things look like??)
Then we headed outside, following the walk along the Poetry Trail. The large stones here each represent a season, with an inscription of Reece’s poetry. It was a lovely way to introduce him to the kiddos. Using the map we picked up earlier, we followed the trail through five barn buildings, a replica of his home, and a trail along the water.
Mountain Crossings. Special thanks to Atlanta Trails for turning me on to this place. It’s a fun shop to nose around, with gear and books and whatnot. The best part is the story behind the building. It’s the only covered section of the AT! You can catch a glimpse of thru-hikers or see their boots hanging from the rafters. Some weekends you’ll hear live music, too. Be sure to climb the stairs behind the building for more great views.
Another fun fact? This is the only part of the Appalachian Trail that is covered; the trail runs right along the side of the building! Even if you don’t walk the length of the AT, you can walk the width of it and still say you’ve been on the AT!!!
Read More: Mountain Crossings at Walasi-Yi
SunDance Gallery . If you’re looking for a souvenir to commemorate your visit, this is the place to stop. Pick from pottery, adorable socks, jewelry…we love the glass art particularly. Everything you find here is American made!
Meeks Park. Enjoy batting cages, a nice playground, disc golf, a dog park and skateboard park. There is also a kayak ramp and an outdoor adult exercise area. Walk the 4+ miles of trails or take a dip in the seasonal pool (for a small fee.) Many of the city’s best festivals are also held here. You’ll find plenty of picnic tables dotting the side of the river through here, so pack a lunch! When it starts getting warm, cool off in the splash pad by the pool. Whew, this park is packed with awesome adventures!
Insider Tip : Can you find any of the painted rocks hidden around the park? When you do, take a photo and tag it #BlairsvilleRocks
Lasso the Moon. This alpaca farm is free of charge to visit (A donation is appreciated.) It isn’t open on a regular basis, though. If you plan to visit Blairsville, call ahead to make an appointment. You’ll meet the alpacas, learn what they do with the fibers, and shop the store. There is also an open house three times a year, including July, Thanksgiving and the winter holidays. I’m dying to take one of their fiber arts classes!
Pappy’s Trading Post. Pappy’s is one of several Union County destinations that make up the North Georgia Farm Trail – and is the one you should make a point to visit. It’s not really a “farm” though; it’s a unique shopping plaza offering everything under the sun (and maybe even a kitchen sink!) Taste the (legal) moonshine, rummage through all the tchotchkes, or grab a bite of ice cream and enjoy it while you watch the river rush by. There is a HUGE rocking chair out front that my boys love getting their picture taken in! You won’t want to miss this popular hole in the wall.
Logan Turnpike Mill. Visit the place responsible for the amazing grits cooked by some of Atlanta’s best-known chefs…and you can take some home yourself! The kids will love seeing the huge stone grinding wheels and picking out something from the bakery.
Local Music at the Courthouse. Tap your toe to good old fashion mountain music every Friday night in the courtroom of the historic Union County Courthouse. This free jam session starts at 7 pm, but you’ll want to get there by 6 pm if you want a seat at this popular local event. Plus, you’ll want some time to explore the military museum and dollhouse collection that are also located in the courthouse. Nearby is the Blairsville City Hall (formerly the “old” jail built in 1934).
Local Music at the Coosa United Methodist Church. If you don’t get enough local music at the courthouse, there’s another local jam session on Tuesday evenings at the Coosa United Methodist Church from 6-9 pm.
FAVORITE FESTIVALS IN BLAIRSVILLE GA
Blairsville Scottish Festival & Highland Games (Second Weekend in June). Children can compete in their own Highland games. For the “wee ones,” there’s face painting and train rides. This is one unique festival you just can’t miss!
Mountain Heritage Festival (September-Labor Day Weekend). Collections of mountain-made products are showcased at this spectacular event during Labor Day weekend each year. Kids can try their hand at gold panning. You’ll enjoy plenty of live music – especially blue grass, Americana, country and gospel.
Sorghum Festival (2nd and 3rd Weekends in October). Blairsville’s longest-running festival celebrates the ancient art of cooking sweet syrup from Sorghum Cane. Visitors enjoy sorghum syrup-making demonstrations in addition to contests and more. These are great fun for the kids, including Climbin’, Rock Throwin’, Horseshoe Pitchin’, Log Sawin’, and Biscuit Eatin’
Christmas Festivities (November/December). There are plenty of ways to celebrate in Blairsville including a shopping session at Mistletoe Market , Blairsville Holiday Stop & Shop , or the Kris Kringle Mountain Market . Take a stroll through the Community Center to peek at 30+ decorated trees during the Tour of Trees , or jump-start the season with the Holiday on the Square & Christmas Parade on the first Saturday in December. Finally, don’t skip Holly Jolly Christmas ‘ music and Santa photo-ops, or the Christmas Tree Lighting at Vogel State Park, with a bonfire, caroling and visit from Santa.
FOR THE ADULTS
Want to unplug on an overnight “date” without the kids? Blairsville got you covered there as well. Relax in a hot tub after exploring waterfalls or taking a hike on the Appalachian Trail. There is no better place to make a wish under the stars and take in the beautiful mountain sky. Couples may decide to propose a toast to their rekindled future at a local winery or just enjoy each others company sitting by the fire in a cozy cabin.
Try a tasting at Odom Springs Vineyards , with award-winning selections. Paradise Hills offers cabins, a spa and a winery! They offer multiple money-saving package deals, so be sure to check out the website.
Late Spring/early Summer is a great time for oenophiles to visit Blairsville. It’s when they host the annual Georgia Mountain Wine & Jazz Festival , held June 25-26, 2022. Sample amazing wine and delicious food while listening to top jazz performers from the region. You can purchase wine by the glass or bottle, bring your blanket or lawn chairs and listen to great music under the stars.

Plan a Trip to Stunning Blairsville, GA
Thinking about planning a trip to Blairsville, GA? This small Georgia town is full of fun things to do, amazing restaurants, and beautiful scenery. Kidding Around team members have been to Blairsville, GA many times, and we’ve combined our experiences in this guide just for you. Check out all our recommendations for where to stay, what to eat and things to do in Blairsville, GA!
If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination with the perfect mix of southern charm and amenities, this is it. At just about 3 hours from the South Carolina Upstate, Blairsville makes the perfect weekend destination from Greenville, SC and Atlanta, GA.
First Impressions of Blairsville, Georgia
The drive to Blairsville takes you through national forests and state parks. It was a peaceful, beautiful drive and if I’d been able to leave earlier in the day, a roadside picnic would have made a perfect lunch.
Once I arrived, the first thing I wanted to do was take photos of all the beautiful mountain views I saw while driving. You’ll be glad know I abstained, for safety reasons. Plus there would be plenty more opportunities for photos in the coming days.
Where To Stay in Blairsville, Georgia
This article contains Stay22 affiliate links.
My accommodations for this trip were just outside of Blairsville in a neighboring town called Hiawassee. Shady Rest is a rental home on Chatuge Lake, owned Barry and Tricia White. The story behind this home and how this couple came to own it is a beautiful and touching tale of high school sweethearts who were blessed by the generosity of loving friends.
The house is beautifully decorated and has all the things you would need to be comfortable away from home. The rental has three bedrooms with three king size beds, each with their own master bathroom. The walkout basement floor-plan includes one of the bedroom/bathroom combos and a private living room area. This would be perfect for a multi-generational trip, when giving grandparents the privacy of the ground floor accommodations. Shady Rest also includes a fully equipped modern kitchen, dining room, washer and dryer and private boat dock. The views of the mountain of the back porch are incredible, no matter the time of day.
Shady Rest 50 Lakeview Circle Hiawassee, Georgia 30546
The Ridges Resort
I also got to tour The Ridges Resort, located in Young Harris. The resort is located on Chatuge Lake, with boat rentals and an inflatable obstacle course located next to the resort. With an on site restaurant, saltwater pool, fire pits and nightly S’mores by the fire – this option is a better fit for when you want to kick back and let someone else do everything for you.

Places To Eat in Blairsville, GA
I was very pleasantly surprised to so many delicious and unique dining options in Blairsville. I definitely did not think that the options in this small town were typical. A BBQ place that could have very easily been part of this year’s Sunday Brunch at Euphoria, a home cooking restaurant that has a seasonal menu, and gets most if not all of its ingredients locally. I could go on and on, but I’ll just say this would definitely make for a fun foodie couples weekend get-away!
The Sawmill Place
1150 Pat Haralson Drive
If I had to choose a favorite dining option in Blairsville, which would be no small feat, this would be it.
Owners Shawn and Amy Kight have created something really special here with The Sawmill Place. The way Chef Shawn Kight lovingly showed off the locally procured hydroponic lettuce they use, I thought he had gotten in his start in LA or Atlanta. The Sawmill Place takes pride in everything they send out of the kitchen, and it shows. I got a VIP tour of the walk in cooler, to see the fresh seasonal produce they receive and how it’s processed. It was impressive to see a farm to table restaurant like this thriving in such a small town.
Their menu offers salads, wraps, sandwiches, locally raised beef burgers, meat and three options, a kids menu and an extensive breakfast menu. They even have a coffee bar located in the attached market. I’d be doing readers a disfavor if I didn’t mention the morning glory muffins they make. They are freshly made and incredible, just like everything else served. Chef Shawn saw how much I liked them and ran back to throw some in a box for me take on the road.
Thought and concern even goes into the items offered that aren’t made in the kitchen, like the drink offerings. They serve Coke brand fountain drinks, for those that favor more traditional flavors. However, I discovered a craft brand of soda there, that I just realized, I never sought out once I returned to the Upstate (I need to get on that ASAP). Grape Waynesville Soda was the perfect thing to go along with my Southwestern salad at lunch. It was made from real grape juice and, there were also other seasonal flavors that looked interesting!
I can’t say enough good things about this restaurant, and I hope you decide to visit the Kights when you make your way to Blairsville.
Jim’s Smokin’ Que
4971 Gainsville Highway
People are always saying what a small world it is. I don’t think that ever felt more true until I met the owners of Jim’s Smokin’ Que. In talking to them while I was there, they mentioned they had moved to Blairsville from the same place in Florida that I grew up in. Ok, plenty of people have moved away from Florida, no big deal. The reason this is even noteworthy, is because Jim Guess worked about a mile from my childhood home and for a business that I would frequently ride my bicycle past. It has nothing to do with how the food tastes (Spoiler-it’s awesome!), but I think it’s a fun example of how funny the world works.
Back to the reason I was there, the food.
One of the first things the Guess’ will tell people is that things sell out, and you should call ahead to reserve what you want or risk not getting it. I’m here to tell you it’s true. But in my opinion, that’s just a testament to how well received the food is by guests, and that everything is fresh. Two hours before closing and all that we had left to order was the pulled pork. It was amazing, and only made me upset I couldn’t try everything else. The sides are all made in house, and I opted for the coleslaw. The macaroni salad looked really good, and I’m still lobbying for places to do side dish flights, so I can try a little of everything.
If you go during the warmer months, leave time to play mini golf across the street. Pigs Gone Amok is open May through October, and is $5 per person.
The View Grill
129 Union Co Recreation Road
Overlooking the beautiful Union County golf course, the View Grill offers everything from sandwiches to steaks on its menu, along with a full bar. We enjoyed a dinner at sunset on the outdoor patio and it was picture perfect. The chicken salad croissant sandwich with onion rings hit the spot, with a drink from the bar.
The desserts are made by a local bakery and the cake slices they brought out could easily be shared by two people. If you enjoy golf, this course should be on your itinerary. If not, it’s OK you can still enjoy a meal at The View Grill.
Hole In The Wall
12B Town Square
Wrapped around the historical society are a handful of restaurants and shops that make up the town square. One of the dining options with the most history is Hole In The Wall. There’s so much history, in fact, that a book has been written about it. Rumors of hauntings and more are included in the history of the nearly 100 year old building partially occupied by the restaurant.
While I do love myself a good ghost tale, do you know what I love more?
Cheesecake for breakfast.
Yup, you heard me correctly.
The Hole In The Wall serves up a stuffed french toast. They take two slices of bread and stuff it with fruit and cheesecake. It is glorious. If for some unknown reason cheesecake for breakfast isn’t your cup of tea, they have more traditional menu items, too. Eggs Benedict, banana nut pancakes and steak and eggs are just some of the savory options on the menu. But, I’m guessing you’ll just want the cheesecake for breakfast.
Cabin Coffee Company
44 Town Square
Located in the re-purposed Chevron gas station on the square, this coffee shop is where locals get the fuel they need to get through the day. Fresh roasted beans translate into some really great cups of coffee. They have all the traditional coffee drinks you are used to, along with frappes that are insanely good. Lets just be honest, they are more like a caffeinated dessert in a cup.
I enjoyed the most indulgent of the bunch, the Mississippi Mud Frappe. A mixture of Chilled espresso, Ghiradelli dark chocolate, hazelnut flavor blended with ice, and topped with MORE chocolate and espresso powder.
You can pair one of their drink offerings with a breakfast sandwich, bakery item, sandwich or soup. I chose the breakfast bagel sandwich and enjoyed it a lot! You can even purchase the house roasted coffee to bring back home with you.
Michaelee’s Italian Life Caffe
6C Town Square
This mother and son run restaurant is the perfect place for a date night while in Blairsville. Michaelee’s imports ingredients from Italy, like olive oil and coffee. The Isle of Capri appetizer included fresh burrata mozzarella and roma tomato slices on a bed of arugula with basil pesto. It is served with sliced warm crusty bread and an aged balsamic vinegar. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
A menu item that owner Lisa Collins said took locals a while to warm up to, is the Chocolate Shrimp appetizer. Pan sauteed shrimp are encrusted with shaved white chocolate, served with a chocolate balsamic sauce. My travel companions were raving about this dish!
That shrimp dish isn’t the only place that chocolate shows up on the menu! The chocolate chicken salad includes a chocolate encrusted chicken breast drizzled with the same chocolate balsamic sauce used on the shrimp.
I enjoyed Pasta Sorrento as my main course and it was so good, I continued to eat it way after I was full. Be sure to save room for the dessert, like the cheesecake we enjoyed.
Places to Grab a Drink in Blairsville, GA
Paradise Hills Winery, Resort and Spa
366 Paradise Road
Secluded on a mountainside sits the husband and wife-run Vineyard of Paradise Hills. Among the award winning varietals here is something unique that I don’t think you’ll find anywhere else. “Jacked Up Red” is aged in barrels straight from the Jack Daniels Distillery after the whiskey has been emptied out.
You can visit the distillery and enjoy a tasting accompanied by live music on the weekends or have it shipped to your home via the website. Paradise Hills offers more than just a glass of wine to visitors. You can enjoy a relaxing spa treatment there, and even stay the night in one of their rental cabins.
Enjoying a glass of wine overlooking the vineyard was the first stop on our trip, and I highly recommend enjoying the view and a glass of wine there.
Grandaddy Mimm’s Moonshine Distillery
161 Pappy’s Plaza
Tommy Townsend, a Grandson of Grandaddy Mimm aka Jack McClure, began commercially producing corn whiskey in 2012. Jack McClure was a Moonshiner from 1930, until the day he succumbed to cancer in 1969. Not being raised in the deep south, Moonshine is a new experience for me. Nothing like jumping into the deep end of the pool right off the bat! My very first taste of moonshine was straight out of the still at Grandaddy Mimm’s. In retrospect, I probably should have worked my way up to the 160 something proof stuff that was dripping out of the still. But, you only live once right?
For the less adventurous drinker with $5 to spend, you can step up to the tasting bar and sample their retail offerings. The moonshine they offer ranges from stronger unflavored corn whiskeys (140 proof – 100 proof), to lower proof flavored moonshines in fruit flavors (96 proof – 40 proof). That bar that your leaning on just happens to be from the movie “Coyote Ugly”, and no, sadly they don’t allow you to hop up and dance on it.
The Wine Shoppe
6 Town Square
The nice thing about shopping a small business, is that the people working there are very familiar with the items on the shelves. That’s important when you are looking at buying a bottle of wine. The Wine shoppe has a great selection of wines and the knowledge about each of them to help you find something you’re going to love.
We were treated to a wine tasting and I highly recommend it if you are making the trip to Blairsville sans kids. A wine tasting there and then dinner at Michalee’s Italian Life Caffe would make for a perfect date night. You can even purchase a bottle of your favorite to bring next door to Michaelee’s.
Places To Shop in Blairsville, GA
S unrise country store.
This little county store located on the side of the highway, has been there for almost a century. The owners keep it stocked with local produce, jam and more. Do yourself a favor and buy more than one of those locally made hand-pies located by the register. They are delicious and you’ll wish you had more when you come to the last bite.
I love bringing home a locally made item as a souvenir, and this trip I chose a bar from the Wick And Wash collection of handmade soaps in the store. Jessica Clemmon’s is one of the owners and her line of soaps greets customers as they enter the building.
Outside the store you will find huge bubbling pots full of peanuts for sale, along with fresh local produce.
From Me 2 U
This little shop is in the town square is chock full of cute souvenir options. They have a really nice selection of children’s books that would make the little person in your life very happy! Grab a piece of jewelry, a soy candle or home décor to remember your trip with.
Things To Do in Blairsville, GA
Lake Chatuge provides all different types of fun during the warmer months. Boat rentals, swimming, aquatic obstacle courses and more. Blairsville offers so much more than lake life for visitors though.
Vogel State Park
One of my family’s favorite stops, we love the easy hike around the lake and down to the waterfall at Vogel State Park . In the summer you can swim in the lake at the sandy swimming beach. The mountan views are magnificent. We make sure to stop here everytime we’re in the area and we think you’ll love the peaceful trails just as much as we do!
Pro-tip: Stop for a coffee at Cabin Coffee Company on your way to the park and enjoy it with your walk on the trail.
Trackrock Stables
I was excited and scared to see horse back riding on my itinerary this trip. It’s been more years than I care to admit since I regularly rode a horse. So long in fact that I checked off “novice” on the waiver form. I asked my horse to be “a good boy” and I climbed into the saddle. I immediately remembered what I loved about riding, and it was just like they say about riding a bicycle. It all came rushing back to me.
Everyone at Trackrock was so patient and nice, it helped to ease everyone’s jitters about hopping on a horse. Our hour long ride stretched way longer than planned because we were just enjoying the view on the trail. At the point where you double back, the trail opens in to a field that overlooks the mountain range. It’s a breathtaking view and a great spot to stop for photos. It doesn’t matter how experienced you are, you’ll have a great time at Trackrock Stables.
Trackrock Petroglyphs (temporarily closed)
The local national forest is home to more than just trees. Among the trees of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest hides the ancient Trackrock Petroglyphs. These patterns are carved into the soapstone. We passed this trailhead on the way to the stables and its definitely worth a stop when the site is open.
Lasso The Moon Alpaca Farm
Lasso The Moon is a unique experience where you can spend time with some cute and fluffy alpacas and see what artist Holly Williams does with the wool the alpacas provide.
If you are a regular fan of Kidding Around, you know we have a weakness for cute and fluffy animals. All these cute alpacas in one place was almost too much to handle! We got to spend time with, pet and feed the animals, then we headed upstairs to the artist workshop. Holly makes beautiful things from the wool, and you can even take a class to learn how to create things like she does.
Meeks Park and the Appalachian Sculpture Project
This small town is blessed to have such a beautiful park at it’s disposal. It has everything you could want in a park! Hiking trails, a playground, batting cages, skateboard park, swimming pool, tennis courts, a dog park and the beautiful Butternit Creek and Nottley River. This park is also host to the Scottish Festival in June and the Sorghum Festival in October.
Al Garnto, the artist responsible for the Appalachian Sculpture project chose Meeks park to place several of his kinetic sculptures. His sculptures are made from reclaimed and recycled materials, that he sources locally. His sculptures can be found all over town, and you can arrange a tour of his studio through his website contact info.
I can not wait to return to this unique little town in the North Georgia Mountains, to re-visit the places from this trip and explore new places. If you are looking for a place to escape and explore, this is it!
You’re heading to Georgia? We’ve got your planning covered.

I’m very happy you visited our area. I’ve lived here for 7 years and haven’t been to all the places you have. Lol. I found the people to be so nice in this little town, but the beauty of our mostly forested land is the best! It’s an outdoorsman or nature lovers dream. Take care
OMG! That’s funny! Well Tina, I do like to really go all out exploring new places! I agree about the natural beauty of Blairsville. Meeks park, and Trackrock are worthy of the drive from SC all by themselves. All the other cool things just make it all the more alluring! Hopefully you’ve done a wee bit more exploring of your own, since this. Let me know if I missed something I should see on my next trip!
Hi Melanie, Me and my sister planning for Blairsville trip. Your post is help us lot..
I’m so glad to hear it! I’ve heard back from a lot of people that have gone to visit Blairsville after the article and loved it! It’s an honor to have everyone’s trust, and definitely not something I take for granted. What was your favorite thing there Seattle?
Thank you for highlighting our unspoiled community. Come back soon!
It was my pleasure Renee! You are lucky to live in such a beautiful little town! I’ve told people that Blairsville is like the “Cheers” of towns. Everyone knows your name, and they’re always glad you came! Speaking of names….those morning glory muffins that Shawn at The Sawmill Place makes are calling my name! I might have to make a muffin run soon!
Did you not get to Sleepy Hollow?? It is one of the most unique places in Blairsville! Handmade by Disney Imagineer, Art Milligan, the whimsical “houses” are a peaceful delight for adults, and a fabulous “just my size” playground for young children. He makes small houses that will fit in your car to take home. When you come back, don’t miss it!
I think that was on our Itinerary, and something came up. I will definitely check it out next time we go! I’ve already been back a few times, I love it there. Thanks for letting me know Rebecca!

A Little History of Blairsville, Georgia
Blairsville Georgia sits in what was previously Cherokee Indian land. The first white settlers arrived here in the 1820s and shortly thereafter (1835), the town of Blairsville was founded.
At that time, many people were drawn to the region for its gold mining opportunities. The Blairsville courthouse acts as a centrepiece of the town as it has since its construction way back in 1899.
Things to Do in Blairsville, Georgia in 2024
Conquer the hiking trails around vogel state park.
Vogel State Park (est. 1931) is the second oldest state park in the state of Georgia. It sits at the base of Blood Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest and contains several hiking trails and gorgeous waterfalls in its midst. The trails found here are well-marked and offer something for hikers of all ages and abilities. A short walk from the visitor’s centre, around the circumference of Trahlyta Lake, and through the woodland takes you to Trahlyta Falls. From the viewing platform here, you can get up close and personal with the stunning cascades of the waterfall. It sits against the backdrop of a woodland filled with rhododendrons, mountain laurels, ferns, and vibrant green moss.
If you are looking for a more challenging trail, you can consider hiking the Bear Hair Gap, or the Coosa backcountry trail. The Bear Hair Hap route takes approximately 4 hours while the Coosa backcountry trail takes 11. You will find colored waymarkers painted on trees. However, in some places, they are faded or there are two routes and it is tricky to understand where to walk. You can pick up a free trail map from the Vogel State Park visitors centre. Even if it is closed, you will find them in a box outside.
Alternatively, consider downloading an offline trail map such as All Trails. There is no signal on most of the routes. If you hike the Bear Hair Gap or the Coosa Backcountry routes, you can say you have hiked a portion of the Appalachian Trail.
Because Georgia gets so hot and humid during the summer months, it is a good idea to wait for cooler weather before conquering longer trails. Winter, Spring, and Autumn in the USA are good times to visit the state parks of Georgia.
Spend an afternoon at Trahlyta Lake
Trahlyta Lake sits at the heart of Vogel State Park. It is a man-made lake, constructed in the 1930s but that doesn’t make it any less beautiful.
The lake (and nearby Trahlyta Falls) takes its name from Princess Trahlyta, a fabled Cherokee princess. She is said to have lived in the North Georgia Mountains and to have drunk from a fountain of youth to maintain her eternal youth and beauty.
It is pleasant to take a small stroll along the lake or sit on its banks with a picnic, even if hiking isn’t your thing. The area that surrounds the lake is filled with campgrounds and cute cabins – perfect for a retreat in the outdoors. One section of the lake is a manmade beach and you can rent rowboats and sail out across the water when the weather is good. Swing chairs that run along the length of the water make a perfect spot to sit and revel in the view.
Follow the Georgia Mountain Parkway scenic drive
There are several scenic drives that lead you through the scenery of Northern Georgia. They are perfect for sightseeing when you are exhausted after a day of hiking and exploring. You have a couple of scenic highways and byways to choose from and each is very worthy of your time. You can then get out and explore quaint stores and country restaurants as you see something that captures your eye. One option is to head south from Blairsville Georgia on US 19/129. You will pass along the shores of Lake Trahlyta before you connect onto the 180, past Sosebee Cove, Lake Winfield Scott, and the gorgeous lush green scenery of the Chattahoochee Forest before you arrive at the little community of Suches. If you turn onto Highway 60 from here, you will pass “Woody Gap”. There is a parking lot where you can pull up and enjoy a dramatic view over the Yahoola Valley. Continuing southwards along Highway 60, you will eventually arrive at the “stone pile gap”. This is quite literally, as the name suggests, a pile of stones and supposedly the “grave” of Princess Trahlyta. At this point, you will find yourself at an intersection. Turn onto US-19 N and follow the route to Helton Creek Falls.
This is one of several stunning falls nestled among the woodlands of Northern Georgia. It is important to note that although the falls are well worth the short hike to get to, the road turns into a gravel road and is tricky to drive along if you have a large car, with no room to pass other vehicles.
See the world’s largest Amish chair
An obscure roadside attraction that you will see on your right-hand side as you drive into Blairsville Georgia is a large wooden chair with a sign affixed to it. It claims to be the “world’s biggest Amish chair”.
It was built in 2013 and used to sit in front of an Amish goods store which has sadly since closed. You cannot climb onto the chair but it’s an interesting landmark to look out for regardless.
Indulge in Southern comfort food
There are a number of great restaurants in and around Blairsville Georgia that serve up an array of Southern, American, and Latin cuisines. The food is one of the best things that Georgia is known for.
You can find a lot of popular chains here, like Waffle House, Huddle House, and Longhorn Steakhouse.
Blairsville Georgia is particularly good for BBQ and smokehouse restaurants. In particular, check out Rib Country BBQ (21 Kousins Drive) and Jim’s Smokin Que (4971 Gainesville Hwy).
Blairsville Restaurant Grits & Greens (40 Earnest St) is great for all-day southern food. You can stop by whether you want to indulge in smothered breakfast biscuits in the morning, or fried chicken, collard greens, and smokehouse food for supper. Alternatively, head out to Lala’s kitchen in the Mountains (53B Merchant’s Walk, Blairsville) if you fancy something a little different. This eatery showcases dishes from all over Latin America.
Learn about country life at the Mountain Life Museum
The Mountain Life Museum (25 School St) is a small museum in the heart of Blairsville that is free to enter and depicts what the life of early settlers in Union county was like. It consists of several buildings, one of which is the former 1906 home of a local family: the Butt family. The house has been set up like a living museum. If your schedule permits, it is worth stopping by to get a glimpse of life in Northern Georgia in the 19th and 20th centuries. A Mountain Heritage Festival is hosted here every September.
Sample local wines at a Blairsville GA Vineyard
Several excellent vineyards and wineries can be found in the countryside that encompasses Blairsville Georgia. Few people think of Georgia when they think about American wine regions but in actuality, Blairsville was recently named an American Viticultural Area (AVA).
This is a distinction that puts it in the same league as other renowned American wine regions like Napa Valley and Sonoma. It is easy to organize wine tasting here and you have several wonderful, family-run options available. You can simply call the wineries that catch your eye and organise a tour and tasting. If you are not sure which to choose, your Blairsville Georgia hotel concierge or Airbnb host will be able to make a recommendation. Odom Springs (637 Odom Rd, Blairsville, GA) is a family winery that produces an array of beloved dry, sweet, and semi-sweet reds, whites, and rose wines. Flavourful wines are produced in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains using French-American hybrid grapes. Namely Chambourcin, Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc, Norton, and Chardnell. Paradise Hills (366 Paradise Rd, Blairsville, GA) is another great choice. The vineyard not only produces European-inspired wines, but they also have a spa and several cabins available for rent, on-site, making for the perfect wine lovers country retreat.
Hike up Blood Mountain
Blood Mountain, with an elevation of 4,458 feet is the sixth-largest mountain peak in Georgia and the largest along the Georgia section of the Appalachian Trail. It is possible to hike up to its peak, and the trail is not as difficult or intimidating as it may sound. If you are interested in conquering the peak, and taking in the sweeping vistas from the top, you can begin the walk at the Byron Reece Trailhead near Neels Gap. The trail extends over 2.15 miles and climbs 1,400 feet in elevation. If you feel that the incline is too challenging and you cannot manage it, be assured that even part of the way up, you will have spectacular views over the forest canopy. The scenery is particularly magical in early Autumn when the trees are decorated in tones of orange and red.
Check out the old-west ambiance of Pappy’s Plaza
As you drive into Blairsville Georgia along the 129, a left turn onto Nicholson Road brings you to Pappy’s Plaza. This is a very wild west-looking collection of stores and restaurants that seemingly transport you back in time. The Plaza is touristic, sure. But it’s charming in its own right, particularly if you are traveling as a family or you are traveling here from outside the USA and are not accustomed to seeing frontier-style towns like this. Pappys Fudge Shop is a great place to buy sweet treats and souvenirs. They stock 24 different types of homemade fudge. Similarly, sweet tooths don’t want to miss Mountain Country Kettle Corn made by Candace. You can find an array of Georgia souvenirs, postcards, t-shirts and gifts on sale at the various themed stores around Pappy’s Plaza. Pappy’s Country Store and New Christmas store is an eccentric spot that is worth a spot of window shopping at the very least. It is permanently Christmas here, and whether you stop by in July or December, it is like stepping into Santa’s grotto. The store sells everything from festive decorations to jams, jellies, and local agro products.
Try moonshine: The elixir of the South
As you drive around Northern Georgia, you will often find hand-drawn signs at the side of the road that advertise homemade moonshine. Strong, homemade moonshine is often sold from farms, country stores, and even people’s homes.
Of course, there is always a risk involved with sampling homemade alcohol. Moonshine is notoriously strong and there can be issues if it isn’t made properly.
After all, if you are purchasing it from an independent vendor, you never really know what they are putting inside. For what is arguably the best moonshine-tasting experience in Blairsville Georgia, stop by Grandaddy Mimms Distillery (112 Wellborn St, Blairsville GA).
The distillery makes an array of its own moonshines and vodkas. Tours and tastings are available Thursday – Saturday every week. If you opt to take a distillery tour, you will learn the process of making moonshine via a method that has been passed down through generations over hundreds of years. A distillery tour at Grandaddy Mimms costs $5 a person while a distillery tour and tasting is $10.
Of course, you can then also purchase additional beverages to sample as you like. Grandaddy Mimms also produce several of their own vodkas.
See Northern Georgia’s other charming mountain towns
Blairsville Georgia is a quaint and idyllic place but it isn’t the only charming mountain town in the area. A 30-minute drive takes you through the countryside to Blue Ridge: an equally popular mountain retreat. Downtown Blue Ridge is known for its thriving artist community and dates back to 1886. Georgia natives often refer to Blue Ridge as being the “Switzerland of the South”. Independent art galleries, craft breweries, and community theaters make Blue Ridge a great choice for a cultured day out. You can embark on a self-guided historic walking tour of the town center. Complimentary route maps are available via the Blue Ridge tourism boards website here and at the Caboose Visitor Center. The latter is situated at 430 Roberts Way, Blue Ridge.
Visit the Byron Herbert Reece Farm and Heritage Center
The Byron Herbert Reece Farm (8552 Gainesville Hwy) is the former home of the Writer, Farmer, and Poet Byron Herbert Reece. Even if you are not familiar with this individual and his work, you may find the farm interesting. The restored barns and outhouses perfectly demonstrate what farming life was like in the early 1900s. Some of the exhibits here also display the writing and life of Byron Herbert Reece himself.
If you want to combine a little walking with history, you can also opt to access the farm via the Reece trail that starts from Vogel State Park. The route is well-signposted and starts from the Trahlyta Falls trail on the northern side of Trahlyta Lake.
Where to Stay in Blairsville, Georgia
Blairsville Georgia has accommodation options that suit every budget and travel style. Opting to stay in a hotel is perhaps the most budget-friendly choice. But for the most charming country experience, consider renting a cabin. Airbnb has a wide selection of charming log cabins in and around Blairsville Georgia.
Mountain Top Retreat
Mountain Top Retreat is a gorgeous two-bedroom wooden cabin in the countryside north of Blairsville Georgia, close to the hamlet of Ivylog. The Bavarian-style town of Helen is 23.6 miles away, while Blue Ridge is 18 miles East.
The property boasts everything you need for a weekend break or extended getaway. It has a fully equipped kitchen, outdoor BBQ, and firepit, perfect for roasting marshmallows or making s’mores.
A flat-screen TV can be found in the living room area, while there is air conditioning throughout the property. There is a log fire for the cooler winter months, and logs can be purchased from various places around Blairsville Georgia, and its surroundings – including gas stations, supermarkets, and Vogel State Park visitors centre. Reservation prices vary depending on the season. You can find the latest rates and availability here.
Best Western Milton Inn
The Best Western Milton Inn (201 Highway 515 West, Blairsville) is one of the best hotels in Blairsville Georgia for travelling on a budget and it is possible to book a spacious Queen room here for less than $85 a night.
The hotel is situated in the heart of downtown Blairsville in close proximity to a selection of restaurants, stores, and coffee shops. A hearty, complimentary American breakfast is included in the room rate. Click here to check the hotel’s latest availability and prices.
Final thoughts on the best things to do in Blairsville Georgia
Blairsville Georgia makes a great place to visit all year round but a particularly wonderful experience is to explore the area as part of a winter break or a spring weekend getaway in the US when you can enjoy the cooler temperatures, go hiking, and appreciate nature.
The little town, and the wider scenic region of the Georgia Blue Mountains, is just 2 hours north of Atlanta (circa 99 miles), and four hours south of Nashville, Tennesse (circa 231 miles).
