When scouring the design field, searching for stand-out artistic expression and fluid composition , one area that should always catch the eye, is poster design. Moreover, concert poster design , which has produced some truly revolutionary artists and works for generations now, should be paid particular attention to. Fluidity of design is especially key in poster layouts, as there is a finite space, and numerous points to capture and pass along within these confines.

The designer must encapsulate not only the band’s attitude and tone with the work, but also impart the feel of the album or tour that the poster is announcing. And speaking of announcements, the posters must seamlessly incorporate the typography that tells the reader the names, dates, and places of import. All the while maintaining the impact of the piece, and not overworking or overfilling the area and detracting from it’s overall arrangement.

James Rheem Davis

As far as insipiration goes, the work of James Rheem Davis is that rare breed of designer that adeptly captures the very essence of beauty in the dark and macabre. Flawlessly conveying the desired message with near nightmarish representations of a twisted take on the world around. With morbid and melancholy tones to match the images, Davis’ posters have a haunting effect on the viewer.

Again, with Chris Shaw’s amazing talents having inspired so many artists in the field, we felt the last click should go to him.

Music, like the way you prefer your toilet paper roll (under or over) or the condiments on your turkey sandwich, is a severely personal matter.

As a matter of fact, I often choke on my words when people ask me what type of music I devour. Sure, I listen to music throughout the day, but when asked what kind, I can never spit out an answer. Thankfully, I know I’m not alone in this feeling. At least that’s what I tell myself. But I’m always baffled how designers can create concert posters that perfectly and eloquently visually describe music for the masses. How can something so individualized and unique to oneself get boiled down to a poster design? It’s miraculous, truly.

Concert posters have been around for centuries, but with each new music movement, new art and techniques came with them. As a result, these posters have seen the days of everything from purely minimalistic styles to over-the-top completely psychedelic and vibrant designs.

The history is rich regarding concert posters, and today we’re sharing the top five concert poster designers that you need to follow on Instagram.

Mishka Westell | @ mishkawestell

Based in Austin, Texas, Mishka Westell is an artist, designer, and illustrator. Having created concert posters for Metallica, Jack White , Mavis Staples, the Alabama Shakes, and countless others, you could say that she’s quite the eclectic artist. Each of her concert posters highlights the depths and aesthetic of the band, but she still manages to slip in her personal style that leans towards something I’d like to coin “trippy minimalism.” Think bright colors and movement balanced with geometrical outlines of more intricate designs. Don’t know what that means? Check out her feed, and you’ll instantly understand Westell’s extensive skill set.

Jason Munn | @ munnjason

Jason Munn began his career in 2009, working for local venues and independent musicians under the pseudonym The Small Stakes. Now, however, Munn works under his own name for huge clients such as Death Cab for Cutie, Flight Of The Conchords, and The Postal Service. His artistic style is so distinct you could spot one of his posters from across the concert and instantly recognize it as one of his. They’re geometrical, often monochromatic, and purely intellectual. It’s hard to create a simple design that also makes a lasting impact, but Munn’s concert posters do just that. One of my favorites is his concert poster for vocalist and guitarist Ben Gibbard, as the design is simple yet so intrinsically entwined with more profound thought and precision.

tour poster artist

Justin Santora | @ justinsantora

With a degree in studio art from Northeastern Illinois University, it only makes sense that Justin Santora paved a path in the world of freelance illustrating and screen printing. His professional life of screen printing posters, creating art, painting, and drawing began in 2008, and he hasn’t looked back since. His Instagram feed is proof that he has an immense artistic ability when it comes to concert posters and with everything he creates. Most of his work centers around quiet, soft settings focusing on architectural elements and muted color palettes. The artists he’s created concert posters range from Childish Gambino, LANY, John Prine, Phish, and countless others. However, a personal favorite is a poster he created for Childish Gambino’s 2019 Lollapalooza performance that features a nostalgic scene of kids jumping through the stream of a fire hydrant gone rogue. If it didn’t sell out, I’d have purchased one for myself.

tour poster artist

Gregg Gordon | @gigartsf

Gigart, founded by the artist Gregg Gordon, was founded back in 1996 and since has created work featured in magazines, newspapers, on TV, and in national ad campaigns. With clients from Twitter to ESPN to DreamWorks Records to TBWA/Chiat/Day, to say this brand is booming would be an understatement. Gregg’s Instagram is overflowing with inspirational prints, posters, and designs filled with vivid colors, intricate line work, and unmatched originality. In addition, he’s worked with artists such as Dead & Company, James Taylor, and Megadeath to create concert posters that truly represent that bands. With almost 4,000 posts on Instagram, you can lose yourself in the scroll.

C.m. Яuiz Bautista Dominguez | @ cmrtyz

Let’s talk about an eclectic artist, better known as C.m. Ruiz Bautista Dominguez. Dominguez can seamlessly swap between elegantly detailed watercolor paintings to poster designs that are intentionally rough around the edges. To have the skills to change your aesthetic from piece to piece altogether is something not many artists have. Dominguez, however, is one of those skillful creators, which makes his feed an adventure to scroll through; you truly never know what you’re going to find or see, making it a true thrill. His concert posters are nitty, gritty, surreal, and genuinely creative.

Meet the Woman Behind Thousands of Famous Fillmore Posters

Read a transcript of this episode.

According to Arlene Owseichik, San Francisco’s Fillmore Auditorium has a “palpable soul.” It was the center of the countercultural music universe for a time, and bands like Santana, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Janis Joplin’s Big Brother and the Holding Company launched their careers on its stage.

“I think every person that’s entered into that building that’s seen a show leaves a part of themselves there,” she says. “I always think of Jimi Hendrix being in that building and making his way down the narrow staircase behind the dressing room onto the stage.”

All of this soul and history is on display inside the Fillmore’s infamous Poster Room, a cavernous room whose walls are filled floor to ceiling with posters from decades of the venue’s shows. It’s the closest you can get to stepping into a musical time machine.

These days, when you see a show at the Fillmore, you might be lucky enough to get your very own poster for free. They’re a highly anticipated parting gift given out at the biggest shows. Bay Curious listener Ben Kaiser has his poster of the Psychedelic Furs at the Fillmore framed.

A display of concert posters. On one wall are numerous framed posters for different musicians. On another wall, a large framed portrait of Grateful Dead guitarist, Jerry Garcia is visible. Garcia is playing a guitar.

“The posters are artifacts, pieces of time,” he says. “They’re as much [a part] of the concert as the concert.”

Which got him wondering: the posters of the Fillmore are so legendary, who is the person behind them?

From 1985 to 2019, the answer was Arlene Owseichik.

Going to California

Arlene Owseichik came to San Francisco in 1976 for one reason: “I was very aware that the [band] Jefferson Airplane were from San Francisco. We just, kind of on a whim and a prayer, loaded up the car and came west,” she says.

One of the first things she did when she got here was ride past the Airplane House on Fulton Street . “It was crazy,” she laughs.

Owseichik studied art in college and wanted to work in photography and graphic design. She got a job doing “paste-ups” for a hip design studio, Ampersand. In a time before Photoshop, paste-ups were how you manually put images and photos together for printing, literally cutting with an X-acto knife and pasting layers onto a board like a collage. She primarily made announcements for shows that went inside the SF Chronicle’s entertainment section.

“I got pretty good with that X-Acto knife and actually stabbed myself a few times. Those were the hazards of the olden days of graphics,” she recalls.

One day, the phone rang while she was at work. Owseichik picked it up, and the concert promotion company Bill Graham Presents was on the other end. They asked her if anyone there would want to work for them doing paste-ups. She didn’t hesitate.

“I said, ‘Yeah, I’d love to. And that was the start of it.’”

Seven years later, Owseichik proposed that Bill Graham Presents hire her to do the paste-ups in-house as their first-ever art director.

“It was pretty scary. They sat on the proposal for months,” she says. But she got the gig.

Owseichik had come to San Francisco for the music, and now she was plugged into one of the most influential music scenes of the 20th century.

“I think that’s how things happen. They’re just unexpected. A door opens. Take it.”

Working for Bill Graham

Arlene Owseichik’s boss at Bill Graham Presents was Bill Graham itself, the larger-than-life concert promoter. “He was riveting. He was handsome. He was funny. He was electric. He was the dream boss,” she says.

In the ’60s, Bill Graham Presents made a name for themselves by booking the biggest musical acts of the counterculture. The psychedelic posters designed to promote these shows were originally created just as advertisements — but they quickly became sought-after collectibles, written about in national magazines and reprinted for sale.

In the mid-’80s, Graham decided to take the posters in a different direction. They weren’t going to be advertisements anymore, they were going to be mementos given out at the end of concerts, stand-alone works of art. And as art director, Arlene Owseichik was responsible for making nearly every single one of those posters happen from 1985 to 2019.

It was a huge job, and she gave it her all: “I was working with different poster artists…[it was] fantastic, stimulating, wonderful. It just was never-ending, the amount of work that I loved and the people that were doing it.”

The Making of a Fillmore Poster

As art director, Owseichik was in charge of the many moving parts it took to create a Fillmore poster. At the beginning of each month, she got a list of upcoming shows from the booker. The shows that got posters were those that would sell out simply because it meant there would be money to pay for everything. Owseichik would research the bands (which she says definitely got easier once the Internet and iTunes came around), then call up one of the many talented poster artists from her arsenal that was the best aesthetic match. The poster artist would create a first draft, and then Owseichik would work with them to come up with a final design.

As far as creative direction was concerned, there were only a few rules: no portraits and no guns.

“I never wanted punky boy art,” she says. “I really stood my ground on [that]. I wanted the posters to be a celebration of art and of music.”

The final hurdle was getting the poster approved by management, which Owseichik says could be rocky.

“There were different opinions. As fun as it was, it was also really hard and heartbreaking that somebody could spend a week doing a poster, and then basically it would just be tossed in the trash,” she says.

Because the posters were given away for free, Owseichik never had to involve the band in the poster approval process, so the final poster was just as much a surprise to them as it was to the audience. The exceptions were Tom Petty and the Counting Crows — they insisted on approving the posters before print. Generally, the bands loved their posters, but of course, there were some exceptions, notably Greg Allman.

One of her favorite posters was created by artist James Mecier for Willie Nelson’s 2002 show . It’s a collage of the musician’s face made with feathers, rocks, and stones.

Another of her favorites is a 2007 poster for BB King done by illustrator Alan Forbes. It features a shiny black guitar drawn with outstretched angel wings and a jeweled crown circling its neck.

“The truth be said, I loved every one of them. They’re all my children,” she says.

A concert poster for the band Jefferson Airplane, featuring a black and white image of the Golden Gate Bridge shrouded in fog, with a multicolored illustration of a bi-wing airplane flying over it.

She even got to design and illustrate a poster for Jefferson Airplane, which she says was “a dream come true.” For the design, she drew a bi-winged airplane flying over a photo she had taken of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Another one of Owseichik’s duties as art director was designing the dressing rooms for big acts, especially as Bill Graham Presents expanded their venues across the Bay. When Jimmy Page came to play at the Oakland Coliseum with an Egyptian band, she used props and décor to transform his dressing room into an Egyptian oasis. When Page entered the room after the show to grab a beer from the cooler, Owseichik was “star-struck.”

Her friends thought she had the coolest job in the world, and she agreed with them.

The Final Act

For thirty-three years, Bill Graham Presents — and these posters — were Arlene Owseichik’s entire world. So, her decision to retire in 2019 was a difficult one, even though she knew it was time. She remembers giving her notice, feeling like an “out of body experience.”

The Fillmore’s longtime marketing manager, Ashley Graham (no relation to Bill Graham), stepped into the role as the venue’s art director and still holds the position.

Arlene says she’s still decompressing from the job’s long days: “There were times that I worked 24 hours…that I never left the office,” she says. She also doesn’t miss the deadlines, like in 2014 when she had less than two days’ notice to make a poster for Prince at the Fillmore. She and Frank Wiedemann were feeling good about their design incorporating Prince’s guitar and the newly opened Bay Bridge … and then she realized they had printed the wrong date.

“We had to redo the poster, like in an instant: change the file, reprint it, do it with the proper date,” she says. “That was pretty darn stressful. But hey, it was Prince.”

A woman in a yellow shirt hold a concert poster for the artist

She says she used to be addicted to excitement, but these days, she’s happy to have a quieter daily routine: no shows, no deadlines, and no late nights. The thing she does miss about going to shows at the Fillmore is seeing concert-goers stream out of the building at the end to get their posters. People tell her stories about this all the time: “Like, ‘Oh, that’s where I met my wife,’ or ‘That was such an amazing night.’ And then it’s all embodied in this poster,” she says. “It’s part of San Francisco lore. It’s incredible.”

Owseichik hasn’t cast aside the design world. She has her own business, Big Picture Design , which she says was partly inspired by how Bill Graham always had his eye on the “big picture.”

She may not be spending her days at the Fillmore anymore, but it’s undeniable that she has left her mark on the building the same way Jimi Hendrix did more than 50 years ago.

“I feel really blessed,” she says. “It was just really an incredible place to be. I hope it lives forever.”

Olivia Allen-Price: Years ago, Bay Curious listener Ben Kaiser was seeing a show at San Francisco’s Fillmore Auditorium … The Psychedelic Furs.

[The Psychedelic Furs, “Love my Way” plays]

Olivia Allen-Price: It was a great show. The kind he’ll remember forever.

Ben Kaiser: And luckily, that night, they were offering a free poster to everybody in attendance. That was my first poster of the Psychedelic Furs.

Olivia Allen-Price: It’s now framed in his Atlanta home.

Ben Kaiser: It’s a very dark and moody poster. It looks like somebody standing in an alley, walking away from the perspective of the viewer. It’s a beautiful poster.

Olivia Allen-Price: Free posters are a beloved parting gift for concert-goers at the Fillmore. They’re never guaranteed, only given out at the biggest shows. And they’re created just for the Fillmore audiences — so when folks do get one, it’s special.

Ben Kaiser: These posters are artifacts, pieces of time. They’re as much of the concert as the concert.

Olivia Allen-Price: At this point, the free posters are almost as legendary as The Fillmore Auditorium itself — a center stage for the counterculture music scene during the 1960s. Bands like Santana, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Janis Joplin’s Big Brother and the Holding Company launched their careers on that stage. The Grateful Dead played there more than 50 TIMES.

[The Grateful Dead “Friend of the Devil” plays]

Olivia Allen-Price: The posters. The venue. It’s history! This all got Ben wondering…

Ben Kaiser: The Fillmore is legendary. The posters at the Fillmore are legendary. The poster wall at the Fillmore is legendary. But what I would like to know more about is the person behind the poster.

Olivia Allen-Price: The creative director behind hundreds of the Fillmore’s storied posters — Arlene Owseichik.

Today on Bay Curious, we’ve got a rocking collision of Bay Area art, music and history. I’m Olivia Allen-Price. We’ll be right back.

Olivia Allen-Price: Our listener Ben wanted to know more about the women behind the Fillmore’s legendary concert posters…. Reporter Bianca Taylor takes the mic …

[Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” plays]

Bianca Taylor: Arlene Owseichik came to San Francisco in her mid-twenties… drawn by the sounds of Haight Ashbury.

Arlene Owseichik: I was very aware that the Jefferson Airplane were from San Francisco. And just kind of on a whim and a prayer, we loaded up the car and came west. And. And one of the first things we did was ride by the airplane mansion on Fulton Street,

Bianca Taylor: It was 1976, and although it had been almost a decade since the Summer of Love, the spirit of music and art was alive and well in the city. Arlene’s first job was waitressing at the infamous North Beach Beat hangout, Vesuvio Cafe. She had studied art in college and wanted to be a photographer, so she also started volunteering at Camerawork — a nonprofit art gallery which is still around today. She spent her days there working with glue and scissors, using a collage-type process to make ads in newspapers.

Arlene Owseichik: I would do the paste-up for the announcements for shows.

Bianca Taylor: In a time before Photoshop, paste-ups were how you manually put images and photos together for copying or printing — literally cutting and pasting layers onto a board.

Arlene Owseichik: I got pretty good with that X-Acto knife and actually stabbed myself a few times. Those were the hazards of the olden days of graphics.

Bianca Taylor: Soon, she got hired by a small design studio, Ampersand, and started working on paste-ups full-time. One day, the phone rang at work — Arlene picked it up, and on the other end .. was the concert promotion company, Bill Graham Presents.

Arlene Owseichik: It was like, “Oh, might somebody at Ampersand Design, you know, be able to take on pasting up ads ?” So I said, ‘Yeah, I’d love to. And that was the start of it.’

Bianca Taylor: She started making paste-up newspaper ads for them… and then in 1985, after she proposed that they hire her in-house, Arlene became Bill Graham Presents’ first-ever art director. This was a dream job — she had always been a huge music fan… and now she was plugged into one of the most influential music scenes of the 20th century.

Arlene Owseichik: A door opens. Take it.

Bianca Taylor: At the time, Bill Graham Presents was run by Bill Graham himself, the larger-than-life concert promoter.

Archival clip of Bill Graham: I think the artist is the most privileged of all species. I consider myself to be the next most fortunate.

Bianca Taylor: Bill Graham was an enigmatic man with an unbelievable story.

Born Wolfgang Grajonca in 1930s Berlin, he fled to New York as an orphaned 10-year-old, having lost his mother in the Holocaust. He changed his name to Bill Graham to sound more American…By the time Arlene met him, he had his signature thick Bronx accent.

Arlene Owseichik: I adored him. He was— He was riveting. He was handsome. He was funny. He was electric.

[Aretha Franklin Live at the Fillmore album, “Respect” plays]

Bianca Taylor: In the ’60s, Bill and his company, Bill Graham Presents, had become famous for booking the biggest musical acts of the day: everyone from the Grateful Dead and Santana to Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin.

The psychedelic posters designed to promote these shows were just created as advertisements — but they quickly became famous collectibles, written about in national magazines and reprinted for sale.

In the mid-’80s, Bill Graham decided to take the posters in a different direction: they weren’t going to be advertisements anymore, they were going to be mementos given out at the end of concerts. Stand-alone works of art.

And as Art Director, Arlene was the person behind nearly every single one of those posters from 1985 to 2019.

Arlene Owseichik: I was working with different poster artists, fantastic. Never never-ending, stimulating, wonderful. It just was never ending the amount …the work that I loved and the people that were doing it.

Bianca Taylor: Here’s how it worked: At the beginning of each month, Arlene got a list of upcoming shows from the booker…

Arlene Owseichik: Shout out to Michael Bayley, who’s been the booker for the shows all these years.

Bianca Taylor: Shows that got posters were shows that would sell out…

Arlene Owseichik: Because it meant there’s enough money floating around, you know, to pay for everything.

Bianca Taylor: Then, she would go through the list and start doing research on the bands.

Arlene Owseichik: As time went on, I have to say that it became much easier with iTunes and the Internet, and it’s all right at your fingertips.

Bianca Taylor: Once she had a sense for the band’s style, she’d think about which poster artist’s aesthetic would be the best match.

Arlene Owseichik: By this time, I had worked with a roster of poster artists, and so I’d call up Frank Wiedemann and and I’d say, you know, whatever. Duran Duran! And then he’d go, “Yeah.”

[Duran Duran’s “Girls on Film” plays]

Bianca Taylor: Then the fun part — the artist would create a poster, show it to Arlene, and the two of them would work together to come up with a final design. There were only a few rules she enforced: The first was no portraits. The second was no guns.

Arlene Owseichik: I never wanted guns. I never wanted, you know, death masks. I never wanted, like, really kind of punky boy art.

Bianca Taylor: When she and the artist got to a final design, she would take it to management for approval… which Arlene says was less fun.

Arlene Owseichik: That could be very rocky at times. There were perhaps different opinions. As fun, as it was, it was also really, really hard and really heartbreaking that somebody could spend a week doing a poster, and then basically, it would just be tossed in the trash because it was deemed, you know, not appropriate or whatever.

Bianca Taylor: One of her favorite posters was created by artist James Mecier for Willie Nelson’s 2 thousand 2 show. It’s a collage of the musician’s face made with feathers, rocks, and stones.

Another of her favorites is a 2007 poster for BB King done by illustrator Alan Forbes. It features a shiny black guitar drawn with outstretched angel wings, a jeweled crown circling its neck.

Arlene Owseichik: The truth be said, I loved every one of them. They were. They’re all my children.

Bianca Taylor: Because the posters were given away for free, Arlene NEVER had to involve the BAND in the poster approval process. The final poster was just as much a surprise to them as it was to the audience. The exceptions were Tom Petty and the Counting Crows — they insisted on approving the posters before print. … Generally, the posters were well-received, but of course, there were some exceptions.

Arlene Owseichik: Right, like Gregg Allman didn’t like his poster. I know Zero Seven didn’t like their poster.

Bianca Taylor: She even got to design AND ILLUSTRATE a poster for the band that inspired her to MOVE to San Francisco… Jefferson Airplane.

[Jefferson Airplane’s “Today” plays]

Arlene Owseichik: The poster consists of a photo that I took of the Golden Gate Bridge and Fog. And so it’s just this really nice photo. And then, I illustrated a bi-winged airplane flying over the bridge. It was like my dream come true: to do a poster for the airplane.

Bianca Taylor: Another duty Arlene took on as Art Director was designing the dressing rooms for big acts —especially as Bill Graham Presents started booking shows at other venues across the Bay. She did the dressing room for Jimmy Page when he played the Oakland Coliseum — transforming it with props and decorations, almost like a film set.

Arlene Owseichik: I made his room Egyptian. They were touring with an Egyptian band. And then, after the show, I was sitting in the dressing room just waiting for the rest of the crew to come in and, like, take down the dressing room. And I was sitting there, and he came in, and he and he, like, got a beer out of the cooler. I was star-struck.

Bianca Taylor: For thirty-three years, Bill Graham Presents — and these posters — were Arlene’s entire world. So, her decision to retire in 2019 was a difficult one.

Arlene Owseichik: I mean, I knew that it was time, but just physically, it was an out-of-body experience because it had meant so much to me, and it had been so long.

Bianca Taylor: She says she’s still decompressing from the fast-paced days…

Arlene Owseichik: There were times that I worked 24 hours. I mean, that I never left the office.

Bianca Taylor: And the deadlines — like in 2014 when she had less than two days’ notice to make a poster for Prince… Arlene immediately called up illustrator Frank Wiedemann, and they came up with a design incorporating Prince’s guitar and the newly opened Bay Bridge…

[Prince’s “Kiss” plays]

Bianca Taylor: …and then they realized they had printed the wrong date.

Arlene Owseichik: We had to redo the poster like in an instant, to change the file, to reprint it, to do it with the proper date. So, I’d say that was pretty darn stressful. But hey, it was Prince.

Arlene Owseichik:  I used to be addicted to excitement, I realize.

Bianca Taylor: These days, she’s quite happy to have a much quieter daily routine.

Arlene Owseichik: Oh, my God. I went to so many shows, which is why I rarely go to shows. Yeah, it would take—not quite a crane to get me out of here, but…[laughs] But no, I had my fill of shows.

Bianca Taylor: The thing she does miss about going to shows at the Fillmore is seeing concert-goers stream out of the building at the end to get their posters. People tell her stories about this all the time:

Arlene Owseichik: Like, Oh, that’s where I met my wife or that, you know, that was such an amazing night. And then it’s all embodied in this poster. It’s part of San Francisco lore. It’s. It’s incredible.

Bianca Taylor: When she reflects back on her three-decade career, she talks about the Fillmore like it’s an old friend.

Arlene Owseichik: I think buildings have soul. I think every person that’s entered into that building that’s seen a show leaves a part of themselves there. I think of all the performers.

[Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” plays]

Arlene Owseichik: I always think of Jimi Hendrix being in that building and making his way down the narrow staircase behind the dressing room onto the stage. And I just think it’s just an incredible place that it’s so—it’s palpable how much soul it has. I hope it lives forever.

Bianca Taylor: Arlene hasn’t cast aside the design world, though — she has her own business, Big Picture Design, which she says was inspired in part by the way Bill Graham always had his eye on the “big picture.”

And If there’s one piece of career advice she can give to people, it’s to follow your bliss. After all…

[Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love” plays]

Arlene Owseichik: I had to move to San Francisco, you know, I had to follow the Jefferson Airplane and had to just— I did what I loved. It came from my heart. And it really paid off.

Olivia Allen-Price: That was KQED’s Bianca Taylor.

Many moons ago, we aired a story about another tradition at the Fillmore Auditorium — how they also give away free apples at their shows. We’ll drop that link in our show notes if you want to learn more.

Thanks to Ben Kaiser for asking this week’s question, which was chosen by you in a public voting round earlier this year. Our November voting round is currently up, and you have some interesting choices, my friends: Questions about geese migration patterns, hot dog vendors, and a biscuit San Francisco was supposedly once known the world over for… Cast your vote at BayCurious.org!

Ben Kaiser: Bay Curious is made in San Francisco at member—supported KQED. The show is produced by Amanda Font, Christopher Beale, and Olivia Allen-Price.

Olivia Allen-Price: Additional support from Jen Chien, Katie Sprenger, Cesar Saldana, Maha Sanad, Holly Kernan, and the entire KQED Family.

I’m Olivia Allen-Price. Have a great week!

Michael Everett

tour poster artist

In 1984, Michael attended his first rock concert and recognized the appeal his art would have to the music industry. Committed to becoming a professional artist, he became a 1989 Florida Academic Scholar and attended the University of South Florida. Michael was commissioned to create his first concert poster in 1995. This poster for Grateful Dead was soon reprinted in a second edition and displayed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Michael’s subsequent festival posters, album covers, and T-shirt designs were distributed nationally.

Mr. Everett began traveling in 1997 to support his career and was captivated by the deserts and mountains of New Mexico. Michael relocated to the Southwest and began his most prolific period as a poster artist. His concert posters featured such performers as David Crosby, Edie Brickell, Los Lobos, The Black Crowes, Bruce Hornsby, Steely Dan, Hanson, Ziggy Marley, Mickey Hart & Planet Drum, and Sammy Hagar, and included collaborations with artists Charles Shultz and Scramble Campbell.

In 2000, Michael moved to Boulder, Colorado to create new original artwork and published his first independent poster lithographs. Michael’s transition to Northern California in 2001 inspired an interest in botanical and aquatic subjects that signaled a rebirth of creativity in his compositions. He published posters to benefit Conscious Alliance, Unbroken Chain Foundation, Reef Relief, Utah Rivers Council, and New York relief efforts. Michael R. Everett continues to show his original artwork in San Francisco and explore new imagery through his life experience as an artist.

Concert Poster Collecting 101: The History Behind the Art

tour poster artist

The Rise of an Art Form- 1800s

Alphonse Mucha, 1896

Posters emerged in the late 1800s as lithography made it cheap and fast to print images on cardboard. They were used to help promote anything from products to live theater or music. The format was popularized in France with posters designed by artists like Toulouse Lautrec, Jules Cheret, and their peers, many of whom are now considered to be fine artists.

At the turn of the century, French actress, Sarah Bernhardt, achieved celebrity status thanks in no small part to eye-catching posters by illustrator Alphonse Mucha. This publicity campaign helped make posters the preferred form of low-cost advertisement. It is, of course, still popular today.

From the 1900s to the mid-1960s, most posters used to promote live performances were in a format referred to as “boxing-style posters.” Typically, these were rectangular pieces of board with simple photos or illustrations of a performer or group and basic information about the date, time, location, and admission price.

The name pays homage to the boxing matches this particular style of poster represented in the 1920s.  While there were exceptions, this style of poster was simple, direct, and commonplace. Boxing posters were used in the late 1940s and early 1950s to bring awareness to various performances from multiple artists. They would go on later to advertise all genres of music that we know today.

The Start of a Movement

tour poster artist

Concert posters would play a crucial role in the spread of the rock ‘n roll movement.  Some of the posters from this time, although not pleasing to the eye, have become iconic. This is mainly due to their connection to a historic event or milestone performance. Posters, much like many other collectibles, were deemed disposable pieces.

Their singular purpose was to advertise. Similar to  Golden Age comic  books, concert posters from the early days of rock ‘n roll are rare. They are occasionally crude, and difficult to find in decent condition.

Posters that feature the famous performers of the era, like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and of course the legendary Elvis Presley, are among some of the most valuable and sought-after pieces around. However, lesser-known groundbreaking artists like Eddie Cochran, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, and Fats Domino’s posters are also desirable thanks to the artists’ dedicated fan bases.

Then there are also the concert posters that demarcate a historic event. For example, the plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and The Big Bopper commonly referred to as “the Day the Music Died.” Posters from this tour are incredibly rare and sell for impressive amounts at auction .

When the Beatles appeared on the scene, the boxing-style poster was still popular. As one can guess, any memorabilia connected to the Fab Four is in great demand. The fervor for the band has remained consistently strong for more than five decades after the group split up. Beatles concert posters were the last hurrah for the boxing design, as the band stopped touring just before the next big step forward in the concert poster’s evolution. The psychedelic movement would change the landscape of concert posters forever.

The Psychedelic Concert Poster

In the mid-1960s, the counterculture movement started to take hold. Rock music was at the forefront of the antiwar messaging of the era. The combination of revolutionary upheaval, civil rights activism, and a flood of illicit substances such as marijuana and LSD would create a groundswell of new, experimental music styles. In turn, this would greatly affect the design and consciousness of the artists making concert posters.

tour poster artist

Posters from the psychedelic era are easily the most well-documented and collected artifacts in the history of the hobby. Bright, eye-catching, and, at times, intentionally difficult-to-decipher designs were traits that all marked psychedelic posters.

Bands like the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane took flight from the rock scene in the gritty Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco.

tour poster artist

Legendary concert promoter Bill Graham moved toward the psychedelic posters. He hired artists like Rick Griffin and Victor Moscoso.  The posters of this period are now considered to be highly-collectible fine art. Many of the artists who designed these masterpieces are recognized as important figures in the art world.

tour poster artist

This style of concert poster would become king throughout the 60s. The psychedelic culture overflowed into the mainstream, affecting advertisement and mass media with its powerful imagery.

The poster culture of the 60s would spill over into the 1970s. As rock bands of the period outgrew the clubs and began to fill stadiums and arenas, the need to raise awareness of performances would start to dwindle. As the bands of the 60s became bloated overblown versions of their earlier selves, a new musical genre would begin to rise up as an answer to the mega-stardom and expensive excess of the 60s.

The next big movement in concert posters would be the D.I.Y. (do it yourself) flyers of the punk and new wave movements of the 70s and 80s.

The Punk Revolution

a86aeba760e8d79e8a462675005621fa-201x300 Concert Posters: Exposing the Niche Art

In the 1970s, punk rock would rise up from the gutters of New York and London as an answer to the self-indulgence of the 60s.  Punk rock rebelled against groups like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, whose thirty-minute guitar solos and intricate stage shows began to turn off a segment of the rock community. T

hese people longed for the simpler days of the stripped-down energy of the 50s. With rougher edges and a desire to make social commentary, though. Punk rock was the end result of the longing for something more accessible and attainable. Punk was for fans who felt that their icons had transformed into untouchable godlike celestial beings with whom they shared nothing in common.

Posters for the People

Much like the musical posture that punk assumed—dirty, fast, and simplistic- the next wave of concert posters was also a new breed. They’d be mainly printed on xerox machines or mimeographs, and designed by amateur artists. The look and feel of punk posters were jagged and unruly, combining the font style of ransom notes, repurposed imagery or hand-drawn designs, and the smaller size of the 8” x 11” flyer. The surviving punk adverts are also popular items that are traded by a cultishly devoted fanbase. Bands like the Ramones, Sex Pistols, and The Clash popularized a genre that has sustained itself through the decades, thanks to devotees of the punk lifestyle.

Punk would transform into hardcore during the 80s while continuing with a similar style of flyer design. These used an even more “no-frills” approach that would mirror the tougher sound of the music they promoted. Both punk and hardcore concert posters are very rare in good condition. Fans of these collectibles are currently aging into the demographic of collectors, much like the Baby Boomers that came before them that drove the interest in psychedelic poster art. Punks are now at that age where they want to recapture the memories of their youth.

New Music Movements Emerge

Pieces from the Punk era were commonly printed on paper, not board. This made survival rates lower, and, as most collectors are aware, rarity often equates to value. While punk was making waves, another musical subculture was birthed on the streets of New York City. The unique graffiti art of rap music was beginning to appear on handbills that were circulating in clubs and discotheques around the urban sprawl of the outer boroughs of New York. Rap promotional flyers and handbills are a very desirable niche offshoot of the concert poster world. Now that rap has basically usurped rock as the popular music of choice, the roots of the form are quickly becoming a ripe ground for memorabilia collectors.

devoo-229x300 Concert Posters: Exposing the Niche Art

Moving on into the 80s, Mew Wave would once again remake the concert poster aesthetic. It employed similar tools to the punk movement, but added its own unique spin on the concert poster. New wave art was commonly recognized for its simple and colorful imagery. While punk revelled in ugliness and offensiveness, new wave prided itself on artistic snobbery. Some bands like Devo leaned into their art school backgrounds to help define their iconography. Other bands would go for the darker look of goth or electronic music.

Needless to say, the 80s were a period of intense creativity, and diversity, creating a canvas for the “anything goes” look of new wave concert posters. Although the technology had been available for years, the use of the silkscreen printing process would take hold in the 80s. It would spark the next big change in the concert poster world. The ability to add several layers of art on top of one another would allow for more colorful and intricate design possibilities. This would become the medium of choice in the 1990s.

Grunge’s Greasy Emergence- 1990s

tour poster artist

At the beginning of the 90s, rock music was once again overdue for a shot of adrenaline. The MTV Generation had grown bland on a diet of prepackaged saccharine pop hits, hair metal ballads, and artists from the 60s updating their sound to try and appeal to a new audience. Meanwhile, in the Pacific Northwest, something was brewing among the rain and trees. Bands who were influenced by hardcore punk and heavy metal movements of the 80s were throwing all their progenitors into a blender. The end result was an era that was termed grunge by music journalists.

Bands like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and of course, Nirvana, would serve to sweep the plate clean once again. They killed off the outdated hairstyles and fashions of the 80s and launched a new, melodic but heavy movement. Its penchant for flannel and ripped jeans would soon take over the popular culture. The gritty roots of grunge were patterned on the ideas of punk. The concert poster art that would arise from the grunge movement would take on its own unique identity. It employed some of the shock elements of punk, as well as psychedelic design ideas from the hippie era.

Blast From the Past

The poster art of the 90s would once again turn its focus to the larger poster-sized pieces of the past, and a crop of incredible artists would rise from the scene. Names like Art Chantry,  Mike King , and Jim Blanchard would pop up. Drawing influences from tattoo flash art and indy comics, the distinct style and flavor of the 90s concert poster melded perfectly with the music it promoted.

tour poster artist

They also ignited interest in a new segment of the concert poster collecting world, the direct sale poster. These were made to be sold directly to fans and led to many high-quality pieces being preserved in impressive condition. As the 90s rolled into the new century, the internet and home printing tech would once again change the game in the 2000s. Flyer art became easily accessible to anyone who had a computer and rudimentary artistic skills.

A New Artist Appears

In the modern age, anyone and everyone who plays music could be their own concert poster production house. With tools like Photoshop, any laptop can be transformed into a creative studio. Some with more firepower than an entire advertising company. In the era of Mad Men, concert posters are legion. Even the most obscure act with a small base can create great art to promote their live shows, but few have mastered this new art form. This leads to an abundance of material out there. There are, however, few pieces worth noting from the vantage point of a collector.

While most promotion is done online now, poster art remains a direct and low-cost way to let people know about an upcoming gig.  As such, the concert poster continues to be a form of expression as well as advertisement. The direct purchase poster business is still in full bloom. These collectibles are being generated for delivery to rabid fans. The concert poster has held its ground in the digital age, in a transformed state. To be honest, everything has had to reconfigure to survive since the advent of the internet. Who knows what the future holds for concert posters?

Money in Original Art

tour poster artist

Another aspect of poster collecting to take into account is the original art created for the published posters. Many pieces were personally rendered by talented and, in some instances, famous artists. Other pieces were physical cut-and-paste jobs, where the original content was taken from another medium and reused for flyers. Respected artists as varied as Greg Irons, Robert Williams, Coop, Pushead, Raymond Pettibon, or Shepard Fairey have all contributed to the creative world of the concert poster. Acquiring their original art could be a grand investment, much like the original comic book art market.

BILL GRAHAM SERIES

  • $556 Creedence Clearwater Revival Poster
  • $80 The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Poster
  • $138 Grateful Dead Poster

The Bill Graham Series (BG) represents the original work by the seminal poster artists of the late 1960s. Many BG posters were accompanied by handbills and/or postcards, with matching monochrome ticket series using different colors for each night of a multi-show event. Many of the pieces in the BG Series are considered to be among the finest representations of rock concert art available anywhere today.

BILL GRAHAM PRESENTS

  • $120 Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Poster
  • $120 Hanson Poster
  • $120 Pet Shop Boys Poster
  • $120 U2 Poster

After a long hiatus that commenced with the closing of the Fillmores, Bill Graham Presents returned to producing shows in smaller venues in 1985 and revived the time-honored and popular concert poster to promote the productions. Drawing on the art forms and styles created in the earlier BG and FME series, the artists of this second generation produced works with contemporary tools and colors and that rival their earlier counterparts.

FILLMORE SERIES

  • $90 Matchbox Twenty Poster
  • $90 Los Lonely Boys Poster
  • $90 Fiona Apple Fine Art Print
  • $90 Jim Rose Circus Side Show Poster

In the mid 80's Bill Graham reopened the original Fillmore , only to have it closed by the 1989 earthquake. Bill's death in a helicopter accident in October 1991 inspired everyone at Bill Graham Presents to finish one of his final pet projects: to restore the building he loved more than any other. The Fillmore continues to present the best popular music as well as the tradition of exceptional poster art to promote the shows.

FAMILY DOG SERIES

  • $239 The Blues Project Poster
  • $7,528 Howlin' Wolf Poster
  • $224 Van Morrison Poster
  • $224 Steppenwolf Poster

The Family Dog was a loose collective of free spirits managed by Chet Helms, a contemporary of Bill Graham, who put on rock dances at the Avalon Ballroom more or less continually from 1965 to 1970. These almost-nightly events, like those hosted at the Fillmore, were more than conventional concerts. They were social gatherings with plenty of dance, music and light. Some of the early Family Dog posters are among the most significant art of the period.

ARMADILLO SERIES

  • $412 Wet Willie Poster
  • $398 George Thorogood & The Destroyers Poster
  • $250 Herb Ellis Poster
  • $250 Chuck Mangione Poster

The Aramdillo ('Dillo) opened for business in late 1969 and enjoyed a ten-year ride as a premier Austin, Texas rock/country rock venue. Located in a former National Guard Armory and co-founded by Shiva's Head manager Eddie Wilson, the wildly painted emporium presented local and national talent including Charlie Daniels, Emmy Lou Harris, Frank Zappa, Bruce Springsteeen and Willie Nelson to highly appreciative Austin audiences. Folding in fans from the Vulcan Gas Company, AWHQ also enjoyed the supreme talent of its own house artist, Jim Franklin, who designed many of the venue's posters. The 'Dillo's "Last Dance" concert was held on New Year's Eve, 1980, and the rockin' hotbed of some of Austin's most memorable concerts was replaced by the most pedestrian of buildings: a bank.

GRANDE BALLROOM

  • $514 The Frost Poster
  • $405 Moby Grape Handbill
  • $99 Country Joe & the Fish Handbill

Detroit was a hotbed of rock music creativity in the late sixties and early seventies, and the Grande Ballroom played dream-come-true venue and de-rigueur stop for new and already popular bands. Chosen Few, on the bill for opening night, was a casualty of the early days of rock competition as were the Ann Arbor-born Rationals and Stooges. Detroit-local MC5, the Grande's de-facto house band, however, is credited with kicking peace-and-love up a notch and out to pasture, and Procul Harum, The Who, Pink Floyd and Jefferson Airplane passed through and added heartland-of-America to burgeoning fan bases.

TOM MOFFATT SERIES

  • $273 Stevie Wonder Poster
  • $60 James Taylor Poster
  • $60 Gloria Estefan Poster
  • $120 The Guess Who Poster

Called the Entertainment King of Hawaii, Tom Moffatt built a musical legacy from 50 years of promoting concerts all over the Islands. Beginning as a radio deejay, he was there when rock n' roll hit the airwaves, and it was with gusto that he began promoting concerts in 1955. Under Tom's direction, artists like Elvis Presley, Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin and Michael Jackson rocked the Hawaiian Islands.

Things To Do

Entertainment, entertainment | what to do in chicago: ‘batman’ in concert, dueling art fairs and chance the rapper.

Chance the Rapper performs at the United Center on Aug. 19, 2023, in Chicago. (John J. Kim/Chicago Tribune)

Chicago Latino Film Festival : This film festival celebrates its 40th year with 50 selected features and 35 shorts. Most films will be shown at Landmark Century Theatres, and the Cervantes Institute will host special events. The Davis Theatre hosted the opening night. Through April 22 at various venues; more information at chicagolatinofilmfestival.org

Ronny Chieng : The comedian and actor brings his Love To Hate It Tour to Chicago. Chieng has two stand-up comedy specials on Netflix and has starred in movies including “Crazy Rich Asians” and Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” 7 p.m. April 13 at the Chicago Theatre, 175 N. State St.; tickets at msg.com

Chance the Rapper: With Chance headlining and DJ Oreo opening, this all-ages benefit concert at the Ramova in Bridgeport supports SocialWorks, a youth empowerment program focusing on arts and education founded by Chance.  7 p.m. April 14 at Ramova Theatre, 3520 S. Halsted St.; tickets $99.50-$125.50 at ramovachicago.com . Afterparty at 10:30 p.m. is an extra $30 (ages 21+).

“The Trial of Pericles”: This annual event by the National Hellenic Museum has a clever premise: Take a trial or debate from ancient Greece and argue it anew, with present-day legal all-stars populating the courtroom. Back in 451 B.C.E., Pericles changed the Athenian Constitution to restrict citizenship and voting rights, though he died before his actions ever reached a courtroom. At the Harris Theater, Katerina Alexopoulos from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will play a prosecuting attorney and retired Judge Paul Lillios will take on the thankless task of playing Pericles. The audience gets to vote on the verdict. 7 p.m. April 17 at the Harris Theater, 205 E. Randolph St. at Millennium Park; tickets $52.50-$102.50 at www.harristheaterchicago.org

“Batman 1989 – 35th Anniversary Concert”: Revisit the classic DC superhero movie with the Chicago Philharmonic’s 50-person orchestra performing the music. Attendees are encouraged to dress up as their favorite superhero. 7:30 p.m. April 13 at Auditorium Theatre, 50 East Ida B. Wells Drive.; tickets from $69 at auditoriumtheatre.org

Ravenswood Ave.; tickets at theotherartfair.com . EXPO Chicago runs through April 14 at Navy Pier, 600 E. Grand Ave.; single day admission tickets start at $40 at expochicago.com.

The Downtown Norfolk Council has partnered with Norfolk Tour Company to offer 21 free monthly walking tours of the downtown and the Neon District.

The Saturday tours run through December and include notable public art in the Neon District, the importance of the Granby Street corridor, a history of downtown theaters, an urban design-themed tour focusing on downtown’s redevelopment, the Elizabeth River Trail, as well as tours of historic homes and churches.

The Neon District tours explore more than 100 pieces of public art and many local businesses that make up the neighborhood fabric.

All tours begin at The Plot at the corner of Granby Street and Olney Road. Neon District public parking is available on the street, at the Plot’s parking lot and the Harrison Opera House lot.

For a detailed schedule and more information, see www.downtownnorfolk.org .

‘Proud’ Madonna steps out for son Rocco Ritchie’s first solo art exhibition: ‘Happy to have the night off’

The Queen of Pop is hung up on her son Rocco Ritchie’s newest art piece.

Madonna, 65, attended the opening of the 23-year-old’s art exhibition in Miami on April 11, and she couldn’t be more “proud” of his achievements.

The singer posted a slew of photos from the evening, where she rocked a showstopping look for the bash.

The “Like a Virgin” singer, who is currently traveling for her Celebration Tour, donned a shiny dark green suit, a white cowboy hat and lacy gloves.

“So happy to have the night off to enjoy my son Rocco’s’s latest collection of paintings called ‘Pack A Punch’ inspired by Muay Thai fighters,” her caption read on Thursday. “So Proud ! ♥️♥️♥️. @miamidesigndistrict.”

It was a family affair for the Grammy winner as her other son, David Banda, 18, twin daughters Stella and Estere, 11, and daughter Mercy, 18, were also in attendance.

Another shot featured Rocco standing in between one of his paintings, sporting a white suit and dark blue silk button-down.

Other snaps showed Madonna posing near the art.

One photo had the pop star hugging her children as they surveyed the work.

The Miami Design District is showcasing Rocco’s art, with the exhibition titled “Pack-A-Punch.”

Madonna shares Rocco with ex-husband director Guy Ritchie, whom she married in 2000 and divorced eight years later. The former couple adopted David in 2006.

The “Hung Up” songstress later adopted Stella and Estere in 2017 , as well as Mercy in 2009.

With former boyfriend Carlos Leon, she welcomed daughter Lourdes Leon, 27, in 1996.

On her Instagram Stories on Thursday, Lourdes celebrated Rocco’s special night, writing: “Go Rocco go!!”

In a recent interview with  Artnet , he opened up about his work and how he got support from his famous parents.

At first, Rocco began creating under the moniker “Rhed.”

“Rhed was something I came up with to go under the radar in the first few years of making work,” he said.

“It doesn’t hold much deep meaning behind it, I just liked the way it sounded. I tried to go along with it for as long as I could, but word eventually got out.”

“I’m proud of who I am and where I’ve come from, but I know people would have judged me aggressively in my early stages if I came out with my name. I wanted to develop technically before showing under my name,” he noted once he decided to reveal his true identity.
