Kruger Experience - Lodge (5 days)

Overall this tour was fantastically organised and a must do if you’re heading to South Africa! All the local guides were very friendly, had a vast range of knowledge and very helpful. They were very willing to answer questions and give info of the country on the whole. The safari guides knowledge of the animals was exceptional and tailored the safaris to what we request which made it even better. There were some early mornings and quite a bit of traveling, as described on the trip notes, but it’s totally worth it for what you see in the 4 days. You still get a chill day at the lodge which is very nice with the options of a massage. Would have loved to have been told a couple more options for the free day like the rehabilitation centre close by for example - but can appreciate most people want the free time to chill. Potentially on the 4 day itinerary have the chilled day in the middle to break up the early mornings? But the itinerary is obviously very well thought out and runs so smoothly so you can sit back, relax and enjoy Kruger. The bundox lodge is perfect! Amazing food, awesome staff and very comfortable in such a unique setting. If you have the cash it is definitely worth doing this tour to Kruger for the stress free nature and the very well thought out itinerary. Had an amazing, once in a lifetime experience!

Culture and customs

South Africa’s culture is one of the most diverse in the world. From indigenous tribes like the Zulu, San Bushmen and Xhosa to the Afrikaners of Dutch heritage, and immigrants of British descent, visitors will be able to experience a magnificent melting pot of customs and traditions. The significant Indian and Jewish populations also add to the ethnic mix. From the proud, beaded Zulu warriors that have inhabited the land for centuries to newly arrived immigrants from   Europe   and   Asia , South Africa’s culture has been shaped by millions of people.

With such easy access to the Indian Ocean and Southern Atlantic, South Africa boasts some of the best seafood dining experiences you’ll ever have. From an indulgent oyster platter at a Cape Town restaurant to a spicy seafood curry in Durban, the seafood here is fresh, cheap and flavorsome.

Biltong tends to divide people. Some find this preserved, spiced meat snack impossible to refuse and others simply can’t stomach it. Either way, it’s extremely popular and readily available in markets, supermarkets and shops throughout South Africa.

Geography and environment

South Africa showcases one of the most diverse and stunning natural environments in the world. Visitors are able to soak up golden rays on sun-drenched beaches, journey through acre upon acre of dry savannah, admire lush, green meadows, walk through tropical forest and stop to take in views of wide, ancient canyons. It’s also possible to stroll the streets of an urban city one day and meander along a dirt track passing small farms and villages the next. South Africa truly is a land of contrasts, and this begins with the landscapes and environment. 

Located on the tip of Southern Africa, South Africa shares land borders with Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland. It also shares a long stretch of coastline with the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans. The topography of the land changes remarkably around the country, from the lofty plateaus of the inland region to the low-lying coast and mountainous ranges of the Cape. This variance in topography makes South Africa rich in many species of flora and fauna, something that attracts many tourists and travelers from all over the world.

History and government

Early history.

The land of South Africa has been inhabited for centuries by tribes hailing from different areas of the African continent, including the San and Bantu people. Most tribes relied on hunting and gathering, but gradually were introduced to agriculture and animal husbandry over the years. From around 1200 AD, the tribal people of South Africa started to become influenced by outsiders, including Muslim traders, the Portuguese and the Dutch, who established a settlement in the mid 1600s. 

The Dutch continued to dominate the country until the 1800s, when the British became interested in the Cape Colony. During this time, the native population had become increasingly dissatisfied with being marginalized and treated poorly by their European colonizers. Many native people were used as slaves on plantations and were treated brutally by their ‘employers’ and many resented losing their land, culture and traditional way of life. Further to this, the Dutch descendants (known as Boers) didn’t appreciate the arrival of the British in a territory they had inhabited for years before their arrival. This frustration and anger regularly resulted in confrontation and armed conflict between the British, Boers and Zulus, culminating in a series of wars – most notably the Boer Wars.

Recent history

More recently, South Africa has managed to overcome the Apartheid era, a time where discrimination of black people was legalized. Until 1994, black people were unable to legally own land or vote in elections. Further to this, education, healthcare, beaches and public places like cinemas were segregated. During this time, South Africa was ruled and controlled by the white minority, much to the dissatisfaction of the black population and ultimately, the world. After much international pressure and many attempts at reform, the Apartheid era was finally ended in 1994, with Nelson Mandela stepping up to lead the nation as President. Due to this challenging history, modern day South Africa has many social issues to work on and resolve, but many of its people are filled with hope and optimism. In 2010, South Africa successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup, much to the delight of its citizens and the world.

1. Zulu beads

Zulu beadwork acts as a form of communication for Zulu people but visitors are usually drawn to buy beads for their vibrancy and visual appeal. Necklaces, bracelets and head pieces are particularly popular.

2. Township art

This urban art form involves recycling common landfill items like soft drink cans, telephone wire, paper and tires, and turning them into jewelry, ornaments, key rings, bags and toys. Township art makes a unique souvenir or gift as it supports local artists and keeps excess waste out of landfill.

3. Gourmet goodies

Freedom day.

Cape Town shines with two days of hot jazz performances from African entertainers at this very popular festival. Although many of the shows sell out well in advance, the free outdoor concert ensures no one misses out.

What is the weather like in South Africa?

The weather in South Africa varies due to its size, ranging from freezing winter temps in the mountains of the Northern Cape to sweltering summer days on the beaches of KwaZulu-Natal. The climate changes with the seasons, but you can expect most rainfall during the summer months (December-February) in the northern, southern and eastern provinces, while the Western Cape gets the majority of its rainfall in the winter (June-August).

Is tipping customary in South Africa?

It's considered polite to tip service workers in South Africa, as most receive a small wage. As a general rule, add 10-15% to bills at cafes, bars and restaurants (if it hasn’t already been added). Tour guides, drivers, valets and porters also should be tipped (5-10 ZAR should be sufficient).

What is the internet access like in South Africa?

Travelers will be able to access the internet quite easily in the internet cafes of South Africa’s large cities but limited to no access should be expected in rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in South Africa?

Cell phone coverage is very good in South Africa’s large cities and towns, but less so in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated before leaving home if you wish to use your cell phone. However, a cheaper option may be to buy a sim card at the airport and purchase a plan with both calls and data.

What are the toilets like in South Africa?

South Africa is modern country with mostly flushable toilets. However, areas like national parks and villages may have squat toilets.

Can I drink the water in South Africa?

Tap water can be drunk in South Africa’s cities, however drinking tap water in rural areas isn't recommended. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found, some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in South Africa?

Credit cards are usually accepted by large hotels, modern shops and western-style restaurants but not by smaller vendors. Ensure you have adequate cash to cover purchases not able to be made on credit.

What is ATM access like in South Africa?

There are many ATMs in the big cities and regional towns of South Africa. Rural areas, national parks and small villages will have limited to no ATMs, so be sure to carry other payment options before traveling out of the big cities.

CAPE TOWN-CAPO DI BUONA SPERANZA-CAPE TOWN

Prima colazione in hotel in attesa della vostra guida privata di lingua italiana che vi accompagnerà ad esplorare i luoghi più interessanti con guida parlante italiano con pranzo incluso Si visita il CAPO DI BUONA SPERANZA il punto dove si uniscono i due Oceani e dintorni dove si potranno ammirare pinguini e leoni marini. Città del Capo iniziò a svilupparsi alla fine del 1600 e grazie alla posizione strategica a cavallo tra l’Oceano Atlantico e l’Indiano. La città sorge in un vasto anfiteatro naturale dominato dalle Table Mountain, un gigantesco bastione di arenaria dalla caratteristica cima appiattita, visibile a 200 chilometri di distanza, una funivia colma il dislivello di mille metri che separa la pianura dalla sommità. Proseguimento per la visita a Capo di Buona Speranza e al suo castello considerato uno dei più antiche del Sudafrica. Da Capo di Buona Speranza è possibile individuare la forma allungata della penisola che insinua tra i due oceani. Il clima mediterraneo e i grandiosi scenari naturali contribuiscono a fare di Cape Town una delle più belle città del mondo

5° GIORNO

CAPE TOWN -HERMANUS-CAPE TOWN

Colazione in Hotel in attesa della vostra guida privata di lingua italiana partenza per Hermanus situata a circa 150 chilometri in direzione est, quella che molti considerano la capitale del whale watching sudafricano, ovvero Hermanus. Il piccolo centro affacciato sulla baia di Walker Bay e abitato da appena 10 mila abitanti, nei mesi invernali australi viene assediato da migliaia di turisti. Hermanus è considerata una destinazione unica per l'avvistamento delle balene da terra in quanto questi animali, amando le acque temperate della baia, arrivano a nuotare fino a pochi metri di distanza dalla costa. Il culmine di visitatori si ha in Settembre in occasione del Whale Festival, durante il quale per un intero fine settimana, è possibile celebrare con artisti, artigiani locali e personaggi famosi, la presenza dei cetacei nella baia. Pranzo incluso durante l'escursione rientro nel tardo pomeriggio a Cape Town.

CAPE TOWN - PARCO KRUGER

7° GIORNO

PARCO KRUGER

Partenza di buona mattina per un safari fotografico a bordo di macchine scoperte con assistenza di rangers esperti, per sentire i suoni degli animali nelle prime ore del mattino. Con un’estensione di 400 chilometri da nord a sud e di 70 chilometri da est a ovest, una superficie di quasi 2 milioni di ettari ritagliata nel bassopiano del Transvaal nord orientale, il Kruger è uno dei parchi più rinomato al mondo. Prima colazione in lodge. Tempo a disposizione per relax. Si consiglia di prendere in considerazione un “trattamento nello spa della Riserva”. In serata partenza per un altro safari fotografico. Trattamento di pensione completa. Pernottamento in lodge.

8° GIORNO

10° GIORNO

Colazione in hotel Partenza per scoprire una delle più belle regione del Sudafrica Mpumalanga la Panorama Route. Lungo il percorso sosta per ammirare gli spettacolari scenari del “Blyde River Canyon”, una gola lunga 26 chilometri, considerata una delle principale attrattive del Sudafrica. Situate a Drakensberg il God’s Window e le sue magnifiche panorami. Bourker’s Luck Petholes, uno straordinario esempio della erosione di un fiume. Le profonde e cilindriche cavità formate per lo scorrere dell’acqua. Lungo il percorso si potranno ammirare le cascate di Mac pools, le cascate formano delle piscine con delle acque cristallina, dove si può nuotare. Si prosegue visitando la cittadina mineraria di Pilgrim Rest famosa nel 1800 per essere la base per la ricerca dell’oro. Rientro nel tardo pomeriggio in Hotel

Da giugno a dicembre si assiste qui al passaggio delle balene australi: a settembre si tiene l’animatissimo Hermanus Whale Festival, che attira moltissimi turisti. Le balene si osservano soprattutto dai meravigliosi sentieri panoramici a strapiombo sulla costa, raggiungibili dalla cittadina.

La città più importante della zona del Capo Orientale è chiamata anche Città dell’Amicizia: la sua spiaggia, Algoa Bay, è la capitale sudafricana degli sport acquatici. Dal surf al kite, dallo snorkeling alla vela, sono 40 km di litorale baciato dal sole tutto l’anno dove potersi dedicare ad ogni tipo di attività. Port Elizabeth è il punto di partenza per le escursioni nel vicino Addo Elephant National Park, dove vivono oltre 600 elefanti africani.

Un viaggio in Sudafrica è sinonimo soprattutto di safari: le possibilità per vivere l’emozione di un incontro ravvicinato con gli animali nel loro habitat naturale sono praticamente infinite. 

Il Sudafrica ha più di 300 parchi nazionali e riserve: il più celebre, e più antico, è l’immenso Parco Kruger : in un’area vasta come lo stato di Israele ospita ben sei ecosistemi con diversi tipi di vegetazione e moltissimi mammiferi, tra cui i cosiddetti “Big FiIve”. All’interno del parco sono moltissime le possibilità di alloggio, dai cottage lussuosi alle sistemazioni più spartane. Il safari all’interno del parco può essere anche effettuato in autonomia l’auto, poiché la rete viaria è ottima. Chi preferisce un safari organizzato avrà però maggiori possibilità di avvistamento, poiché le guide del parco possono percorrere altri sentieri.

Nelle zone confinanti con il Parco Kruger sono moltissime le riserve private che offrono sistemazioni di ottimo livello e safari con gruppi limitati di persone, con maggiori possibilità di avvicinarsi agli animali.

Le opportunità di vedere la fauna selvatica da vicino durante un tour in Sudafrica sono innumerevoli, anche in zone meno conosciute. L’ Addo Elephant Park si trova nella zona dell ’Eastern Cape , che è il territorio dove si possono incontrare non solo i “Big Five” ma addirittura i “Big Seven”, ovvero i grandi mammiferi più la balena e lo squalo bianco. Il parco, dove vivono più di 600 elefanti, si estende fino a comprendere il gruppo delle isole St.Croix, che ospita numerose specie di uccelli e una colonia di pinguini.

L’ Isimangaliso Wetland Park si trova invece nella provincia di KwaZulu-Natal ed è un meraviglioso parco poco visitato durante i viaggi in Sudafrica : per questo è un ambiente ancora incontaminato, dove si possono incontrare anche numerosi ippopotami, coccodrilli e tartarughe. La presenza della barriera corallina regala le immersioni più belle del Sudafrica. Il parco è nei pressi della vivace città di Durban , con il suo lungomare animato che corre lungo una spiaggia dorata dove rilassarsi o dedicarsi al surf.

Parlando di meraviglie naturali le cose da vedere in Sudafrica sono praticamente infinite: un territorio dai panorami mozzafiato è il Mpumalanga , dove si trova il Blyde River Canyon . Cascate, fiumi, formazioni rocciose di arenaria, montagne con una vegetazione lussureggiante si possono ammirare da affacci a strapiombo che regalano vedute uniche al mondo: i punti panoramici più suggestivi sono God’s Window e Three Rondavels.

Anche la Garden Route , nel sud del Paese, regala vedute meravigliose. La strada si snoda per 700 km lungo la costa dell’Oceano Indiano fino alla città di Port Elizabeth . Lungo il tragitto meritano una sosta la cittadina di Oudtshoorn , capitale mondiale degli struzzi, e Kynsna , celebre per le ostriche. A Knysna Kynsna si trova anche un parco particolare, il Knysna Elephant Park , che accoglie e cura elefanti africani orfani o provenienti dai circhi. Non dimenticare una breve sosta a Cape Agulhas , per vedere il punto più a sud del continente, dove si incontrano l’Oceano Atlantico e l’Oceano Indiano.

Costi di un viaggio in Sudafrica

Il costo di un viaggio in Sudafrica dipende molto dalla sistemazione scelta, in particolare per quanto riguarda i safari. Esistono infatti all’interno dei parchi sia sistemazioni molto semplici che lodge esclusivi, dotati di ogni lusso e comfort. I safari possono essere poi svolti in autonomia con la propria auto o organizzati, incidendo naturalmente molto sul costo del viaggio. Un itinerario in Sudafrica della durata di 10 giorni, con voli interni, auto a noleggio e sistemazione di buon livello costa indicativamente 2500 euro.

È buona norma prevedere sempre un’assicurazione sanitaria per un viaggio in Sudafrica, poiché le strutture sanitarie di buon livello sono private.

Posti da visitare in Sudafrica

Si dice che il Sudafrica racchiuda il mondo in un solo Paese: la straordinaria varietà di paesaggi che si possono ammirare durante un tour in Sudafrica è davvero unica. I grandi spazi e le riserve naturali si alternano a città dal fascino peculiare: un viaggio in Sudafrica è un perfetto connubio tra natura, cultura e storia.

Tra le cose da vedere in Sudafrica spicca anzitutto la “Città Madre”: incastonata da due oceani e all’ombra di una montagna, Cape Town è una città dal fascino magnetico. La sua storia particolare è testimoniata dalla sua architettura, dove moderni grattacieli si alternano a edifici vittoriani e i colori vivaci delle casette si avvicendano alle decorazioni afro chic di mura e palazzi. Il Waterfront , il vecchio porto, è il centro della frizzante vita di una città che non dimentica il suo difficile passato: da qui salpano i traghetti per la visita di Robben Islan d , la prigione dove Nelson Mandela fu rinchiuso per 27 anni. Salire sulla vetta della Table Mountain , in funivia o a piedi, regala un panorama a 360 gradi sulla città e sull’oceano: sulle pendici della montagna si trovano anche i Kirstenbosch Gardens , gli spettacolari giardini botanici dichiarati patrimonio UNESCO. 

La Città del Capo è una meta piuttosto sicura per i turisti, basta prendere alcune accortezze per esempio non dare troppa confidenza agli estranei e non andare in giro da soli la sera, restando nella zona turistica dove ci sono gli altri turisti.

A breve distanza da Cape Town, la Penisola del Capo è una meta imperdibile durante un viaggio in Sudafrica . Scendendo verso sud lungo la penisola si incontrano le spiagge più cool come Camps Bay e Clifton Bay , per entrare poi nella zona del Capo di Buona Speranza ed arrivare fino al faro. L’area è un parco naturale con molte specie vegetali autoctone e molte specie di animali, tra cui antilopi, struzzi e dispettosi babbuini. Risalendo lungo la penisola lungo l’Oceano Indiano si trova la celebre Boulders Beach , che ospita una colonia di pinguini. La spiaggia è un susseguirsi di sabbia bianca e imponenti massi di granito, intorno ai quali camminano, giocano e nuotano più di 2000 pinguini africani a cui ci si può avvicinare grazie a delle passerelle di legno. In alcune calette è possibile anche nuotare con loro o raggiungere la spiaggia in kayak. Proseguendo verso nord si incontra un angolo davvero pittoresco, la spiaggia di Muizenberg con le sue coloratissime cabine in stile vittoriano.

La zona del Western Cape non può mancare durante un tour in Sudafrica : è l’area dove tra giugno e dicembre è possibile avvistare le balene australi, che migrano dalle fredde acque dell’Antartide verso le coste più calde del Sudafrica per partorire. Il punto privilegiato da cui osservarle è la cittadina di Hermanus , con il suo sentiero lungo la costa da cui avvistare i giganteschi cetacei che si mostrano in tutta la loro maestosa bellezza. Da percorrere durante un viaggio in Sudafrica in qualunque periodo dell’anno, invece, la Wine Route , che attraversa la celebre zona vinicola di Cape Winelands : le piacevoli cittadine di Paarl , Fraschhoek e Stellenbosch sono dei piccoli gioielli dall’architettura coloniale immersi in un panorama con vigneti a perdita d’occhio.

Il classico itinerario di viaggio in Sudafrica di circa 10 giorni durante l’estate australe, cioè il nostro inverno, prevede un soggiorno a Cape Town , per visitare la città e i dintorni, un tour della zona del Mpumalanga e il safari nel Parco Kruger o in una riserva privata nell’area limitrofa, con il rientro da Johannesburg . In inverno, da giugno a settembre, per un viaggio in Sudafrica davvero indimenticabile è irrinunciabile una tappa a Hermanus , lungo il Western Cape , per osservare il passaggio delle balene.

Un itinerario insolito per un tour in Sudafrica al di fuori delle consuete mete turistiche è quello che comprende anche la zona del Northern Cape . È un vasto territorio per lo più desertico, capace di regalare le emozioni dei grandi spazi aperti: qui si trova il Namaqualand , un’area che tra agosto e settembre si riempie di fiori dalle mille sfumature dell’arancio, e il deserto del Kalahari , che si estende nella zona di confine tra Sudafrica, Namibia e Botswana. Qui, nel Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, la natura è ancora incontaminata e selvaggia, per un’esperienza lontana dalla folla nell’Africa più autentica.

Per chi è alla ricerca di testimonianze della tormentata storia di questo Paese, un tour in Sudafrica non può non comprendere una visita alla Township di Soweto , a Johannesburg. Nacquero qui Nelson Mandela e Desmond Tutu, iniziò qui la rivolta degli studenti nel 1976: è un luogo simbolo della lotta all’apartheid, che cerca oggi orgogliosamente di rinascere da un passato di povertà.

Voli per il Sudafrica

Il Sudafrica non è raggiungibile dall’Italia con voli diretti.  Sono numerose però e compagnie aeree che offrono voli con scalo in città europee, nordafricane o mediorientali. L’aeroporto principale è quello di Johannesburg, ben collegato con le altre città sudafricane con voli interni. Alcune compagnie prevedono voli diretti per Cape Town o Durban. La durata del volo dall’Europa è di circa 10-12 ore.

2° Giorno : Arrivo a Città del Capo

Con il Viaggio Sudafrica e Cascate Vittoria, arriveremo dunque a Città del Capo la mattina successiva, e con il disbrigo della formalità doganali inizieremo il nostro viaggio in Sudafrica e Cascate Vittoria. Infatti, incontreremo la nostra guida che provvederà al trasferimento in hotel. Dopo un breve giro orientativo della città, effettueremo la sistemazione in hotel e avremo il resto della giornata a disposizione nel bellissimo contesto del Waterfront , il quartiere più bello e sicuro di Cape Town che regala incantevoli vedute sulla Table Mountain e sulla zona del porto. 3° Giorno : Città del Capo – Hout Bay – Capo di Buona Speranza – Boulder’s Beach – Città del Capo

Dopo aver consumato la prima colazione, il Tour Sudafrica e Victoria Falls dedicherà la giornata alla scoperta della Cape Peninsula , che si protende nel cuore dell’Oceano Atlantico a sud della città. Quest’area è una magnifica riserva naturale che custodisce selvagge spiagge oceaniche e un entroterra ricco di flora e fauna unica nel suo genere. Infatti, la Penisola del Capo è popolata da animali come struzzi, babbuini del capo, caracal, antilopi e alcuni rari esemplari di leopardi di montagna.

Dai Dodici Apostoli a Hout Bay

Il Viaggio Sduafrica e Cascate Vittoria, partirà il mattino da Città del Capo per costeggiare il litorale oceanico, attraversando gli splendidi quartieri di Sea Point , Clifton e Camps Bay . Da qui si possono ammirare gli incredibili scenari forniti dai Dodici Apostoli , la sezione meridionale della Table Mountain che crea 12 meravigliose formazioni rocciose che si tuffano sulla spettacolare spiaggia oceanica. Quindi, proseguiremo lungo una straordinaria strada panoramica che ci condurrà fino a Hout Bay , località portuale che sorge di fronte ad una lunga spiaggia di sabbia creando uno scenario mozzafiato. Da qui ci imbarcheremo per un’escursione all’I sola di Duiker per osservare la colonia di foche che vive su questo piccolo scoglio che si erge tra le acque dell’Atlantico.

Chapman’s Peak Drive, tra mare e montagna

Da Hout Bay riprenderemo il nostro viaggio verso Cape Point lungo la spettacolare Chapman’s Peak Drive . Questa strada è stata eletta tra le più belle strade panoramiche al mondo, e varca l’omonimo passo costeggiando l’oceano e inerpicandosi sulle sponde rocciose del suo litorale. Infatti, lungo il tragitto del Tour Sudafrica e Zimbabwe, ci meraviglieremo di fronte questi scenari da cartolina. Al termine di questo scenografico percorso, ci ritroveremo dinanzi alla spettacolare Nordhhoek . Questa immensa spiaggia di sabbia dorata si ritrova circondata dal tipico bush sudafricano, e ci da ufficialmente il benvenuto alla Penisola del Capo.

Il leggendario Capo di Buona Speranza

Dunque, il Tour Sudafrica e Victoria Falls si inoltrerà nelle meraviglie della Riserva Naturale di Cape Point . Infatti, ci immergeremo nella natura più selvaggia, ammirando paesaggi incontaminati che vanno dall’oceano all’entroterra. Inoltre, nella stagione giusta e con un po’ di fortuna, sarà possibile avvistare le balene nel periodo della migrazione. Quindi, raggiungeremo il mitico Capo di Buona Speranza , il luogo che per secoli ha rappresentato la fine del mondo occidentale, e noto in tutto il pianeta per il forte vento e le tempeste che dovevano affrontare le navi durante il loro viaggio verso le Indie. Infatti, compiere l’impresa di “doppiare” il Capo significava riuscire a circumnavigare l’Africa e lanciarsi in direzione dell’Oceano Indiano. Qui, avremo tempo a disposizione per respirare a fondo l’atmosfera di questo luogo magico, con la sua vista superba e le straordinarie sensazioni che solo questo luogo è in grado di donare.

Boulder’s Beach, la spiaggia dei pinguini

Dopodiché, il Tour Sudafrica e Victoria Falls rientrerà verso Cape Town percorrendo la strada che costeggia la False Bay , l’ampio golfo che parte dalla porzione orientale della Penisola del Capo e si estende per chilometri verso quelli che vengono chiamati Cape Flats. Durante il tragitto, faremo sosta a Simon’s Town per raggiungere Boulder’s Beach , spiaggia dall’incantevole aspetto tropicale in cui vive una nutrita colonia di pinguini sudafricani. Questa specie di pinguino è sempre più rara, e la Spiaggia di Boulder è rimasto uno dei pochi luoghi per la loro salvaguardia a livello mondiale. Infatti, l’accesso diretto alla spiaggia è consentito esclusivamente agli animali, e percorreremo le passerelle che conducono alla colonia per osservare il comportamento di questi simpatici uccelli acquatici. Infine, proseguiremo lungo la False Bay rientrando a Cape Town, dove avremo la cena in ristorante e il pernottamento in hotel. Pensione completa che include il pranzo in ristorante. Prima colazione in hotel. Oggi il Viaggio Sudafrica e Cascate Vittoria ci concederà un’intera giornata a disposizione per esplorare la vibrante Città del Capo, con le sue meraviglie naturali, i suoi quartieri multietnici e le sue attrazioni culturali. ( Pasti : C/-/- )

Cape Town City Tour, visita facoltativa

E’ possibile, per chi lo desidera, effettuare un tour facoltativo di Cape Town. Con un’escursione di un’intera giornata, verremo prelevati dall’hotel per recarci dinanzi alla celebre Table Mountain. Qui, con il nostro Tour Sudafrica e Victoria Falls, grazie ad una panoramica cabinovia, saliremo in cima a questa iconica montagna che si erge nel cuore della città per ammirare l’incredibile panorama che si aprirà dinanzi a noi. Infatti, dalla sua cima piatta, si può vedere la vastità dell’oceano e tutte le parti che compongono Cape Town, dalla False Bay fino all’Oceano Atlantico, oltre alla suggestiva forma della Lion’s Head. Dopodiché, effettueremo un tour culturale della città che ci condurrà al Bo-Kaap, il quartiere musulmano famoso per le sue case colorate, e al Castello di Buona Speranza. Questa fortificazione risale al XVII secolo, ed è l’edificio esistente più antico di tutto il paese.

Infine, con il nostro Tour Sudafrica e Zimbabwe, visiteremo il toccante District Six Museum, che racconta la tragica storia di questo quartiere durante il periodo dell’apartheid. Infatti, venne completamente raso al suolo e i suoi abitanti sfrattati verso quelle che oggi vengono chiamate “townnships”. Si concluderà poi con Robben Island, l’isola-prigione dove fu imprigionato Nelson Mandela fino alla sua vittoria finale, situata proprio di fronte alla città e alla sua montagna.

5° Giorno : Città del Capo – volo – Johannesburg – Pretoria – Mpumalanga

Di prima mattina, dopo la prima colazione in hotel, il Tour Sudafrica e Cascate Vittoria prevederà il trasferimento verso l’aeroporto di Cape Town. Quindi, prenderemo il volo interno che ci condurrà all’aeroporto di Johannesburg.

Da Pretoria a Mpumalanga

Atterreremo quindi a Johannesburg, e qui incontreremo la nostra guida. Dunque, partiremo in direzione di Pretoria, capitale amministrativa del Sudafrica che nonostante i suoi 2 milioni di abitanti conserva ancora un aspetto di piccolo paese. Inoltre, Pretoria è nota come la “città della jacaranda” per via di queste piante dal caratteristico color violetto che addobba le sue strade e i parchi cittadini. Visiteremo il Voortrekker Monument , imponente struttura di granito che si erge maestoso sulla cima di una collina per commemorare i contadini boeri che tra il 1835 e il 1854 hanno lasciato l’area del Western Cape per raggiungere queste zone. Questa incredibile impresa è nota in Sudafrica come il “il grande trek”. Infine, proseguiremo verso la bellissima provincia di Mpumalanga dove avremo la sistemazione in hotel, la cena e il pernottamento. Pensione completa con pranzo in corso di escursione. Pretoria all’imbrunire

6° Giorno : Mpumalanga – Panorama Route – Limpopo

In seguito alla prima colazione, il nostro viaggio in Sudafrica e Cascate Vittoria ci condurrà lungo la celebre Panorama Route , una delle strade panoramiche tra le più belle del paese. Questo itinerario si sviluppa intorno alla catena montuosa del Drakensberg e conduce fino al Kruger National Park, snodandosi tra paesaggi dalla bellezza rara.

Tra canyon e gole lungo la Panorama Route

Il nostro viaggio ci condurrà lungo questa spettacolare strada che arriva alle Bourke’s Luck Potholes , suggestive formazioni geologiche che si sono formate con l’erosione dei fiumi Blyde e Treurrivier, che si incontrano proprio in questo punto. Dopodiché, con il Tour Sudafrica e Zimbabwe, raggiungeremo il punto panoramico più bello di tutta la Panorama Route: il Blyde River Canyon e le sue Three Rondavels . Davanti a noi si aprirà una vista mozzafiato sul terzo canyon più grande al mondo e le bellissime formazioni rocciose delle “tre capanne”. Infine, faremo sosta presso il punto panoramico di God’s Window , che offre una vista sublime sul tipico veld sudafricano fino al confine con il Mozambico.

Safari nella Riserva di Karongwe

Rientrando dalla Panorama Route, andremo quindi in direzione della Karongwe Game Reserve , sulle rive del fiume Makhutswi e all’interno del Kruger National Park. Avremo dunque la sistemazione e il pranzo in lodge, e nel pomeriggio con il Tour Sudafrica e Victoria Falls partiremo per il primo safari nella riserva naturale. Saliremo a bordo dei mezzi fuoristrada alla ricerca dei grandi mammiferi africani. Al nostro rientro, avremo la cena in lodge e il pernottamento. ( Pasti : C/P/C )

7° Giorno : Limpopo, Karongwe Game Reserve

Prima colazione in lodge. Oggi, il Tour Sudafrica e Zimbabwe ci darà l’occasione di effettuare due escursioni in jeep alla ricerca dei famosi big 5 della savana: leone, elefante, rinoceronte, leopardo e bufalo africano. Inoltre, nella Riserva Naturale di Karongwe vivono giraffe, facoceri, gnu, antilopi, ippopotami, zebre, ghepardi, iene e licaoni. I nostri due safari si svolgeranno la mattina presto e nel tardo pomeriggio, quando l’avvistamento degli animali è più semplice in quanto orari del risveglio e prima delle loro battute di caccia. Inoltre, grazie al safari pomeridiano vivremo l’emozione straordinaria di un autentico tramonto africano nel cuore della savana. Pensione completa in lodge. ( Pasti : C/P/C )

8° Giorno : Limpopo – Johannesburg

Il Tour Sudafrica e Cascate Vittoria partirà all’alba per un ultimo emozionante safari nella Karongwe Private Game Reserve . Quindi, al nostro rientro consumeremo la prima colazione nel nostro lodge e partiremo nuovamente in direzione di Johannesburg, la più grande città del Sudafrica. Arriveremo quindi in città ed effettueremo la sistemazione in hotel. Infine, avremo il pomeriggio a disposizione all’interno dell’area di Emperor Palace in cui si trova il nostro albergo. 9° Giorno : Johannesburg – volo – Victoria Falls

Dopo aver consumato la prima colazione in hotel, il Viaggio di Gruppo Sudafrica e Cascate Vittoria prevederà il trasferimento per l’aeroporto di Johannesburg in tempo utile per l’imbarco sul volo che ci condurrà a Victoria Falls , in Zimbabwe. Una volta atterrati, effettueremo il disbrigo delle formalità doganali e avremo il trasferimento presso il nostro lodge che si affaccia direttamente sulle rive del fiume Zambesi . Qui avremo la sistemazione e la tipica cena boma, con danze tradizionali e piatti cucinati sul tipico braai. ( Pasti : C/-/C )

10° Giorno : Cascate Vittoria

Oggi, in seguito alla prima colazione, il nostro viaggio Sudafrica e Cascate Vittoria ci permetterà di vivere l’esperienza di ammirare una delle sette meraviglie naturali del mondo. Infatti, con la nostra guida raggiungeremo le vicine Cascate Vittoria , e ci mostrerà tutti i lati di questo spettacolare dono della natura. Situate al confine tra Zimbabwe e Zambia e lungo il corso dello Zambesi, si presentano con un’altezza media di 128 metri. Rimanendo sempre sul lato dello Zimbabwe, cammineremo all’interno di una rigogliosa foresta pluviale e sosteremo presso i punti panoramici principali. Infatti, potremo ammirare scorci indimenticabili, apprezzando l’intensità e la porta d’acqua di questa cascata.

Nel tardo pomeriggio, il Tour Sudafrica e Zimbabwe prevederà un’emozionante crociera al tramonto sul fiume Zambesi . Infatti, sorseggeremo un aperitivo con le luci del sole che scendono direttamente sulle acque del fiume, e potremo osservare ippopotami, coccodrilli e altri animali che hanno fatto di questo straordinario corso d’acqua il loro habitat naturale. Le strutture indicate sono di medio livello, anch’esse selezionate da noi, pulite e confortevoli. Nella costruzione del vostro viaggio fly & drive in Sudafrica possiamo aggiungere o togliere tappe di viaggio, aumentare il livello delle strutture o, per i più avventurosi, prevedere notti in campeggio. Nella zona Kruger proponiamo di alloggiare nei restcamp all’interno del Parco principale, ma esiste la possibilità di alloggiare in una delle riserve private adiacenti, per un’esperienza più lussuosa.

Le dimensioni dei gruppi variano di viaggio in viaggio, dipendendo dai posti sul mezzo. I mezzi possono portare 12, 13, o 17 posti al massimo. I mezzi usati per ogni viaggio variano in base alle condizioni stradali previste dal tour: i camion possono avere la normale trazione posteriore con grandi vetri che si abbassano, o essere 4×4 con dei teli che si aprono completamente, al posto delle finestre. Nei tour più facili talvolta possono anche essere utilizzati dei comuni minibus. In ogni caso il mezzo sarà equipagiato di vani porta bagagli, frigo/freezer e tutto il materiale necessario per il campeggio.

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

“There is no bad time to take a South African holiday. But certain parts of the country are far better at specific times of the year. If a safari will be the main event of your South African tour, most of the country’s key parks and reserves are at their best in the southern hemisphere winter months of May to September, when daytime temperatures are cooler, the bush is less dense allowing for better visibility, and wildlife tends to gather around limited water sources. For beach-lovers, by contrast, the main coastal resorts are at their best in the southern hemisphere summer (November to March). Special interest groups such as bird-watchers and photographers may also prefer to undertake a safari in summer, when resident bird populations are boosted by large numbers of migrant birds, and the clear sky and greener countryside make for a more photogenic backdrop.”

Why visit South Africa, what are the major attractions?

“Variety is the keynote of South African holidays. The country boasts one of the continent’s finest safari destinations in the form of Kruger National Park and nearby private reserves, while other key Big Five safari reserves include Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and malaria-free Madikwe and Pilanesberg. Safaris aside, South Africa is renowned for its fantastic beaches, limitless hiking opportunities, wonderful outdoor climate and good-value dining and wining scene. The main focus of non-safari sightseeing is Cape Town, which is gracefully perched below Table Mountain on a scenic stretch of Atlantic coastline, close to the whale-watching hub of Hermanus and the historical Winelands around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.”

How much does a South African safari cost?

“South African safari prices will depend greatly on the level of comfort you expect. At one extreme, self-drive camping safaris in somewhere like Kruger might work out at under US$100 for a couple per day. At the other extreme, all-inclusive safari packages at one of the country’s more exclusive private safari lodges might be 10 or 20 times more expensive. A good compromise between comfort and cost is a safari using the well-run rest camps that can be found throughout Kruger and in many other key national parks and provincial reserves. Accommodation aside, extras such as food, wine and other drinks are very cheap by international standards.”

How is the wildlife viewing?

“Excellent. Kruger National Park and neighboring private reserves host large populations of all the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo), and rank among the top African safari destinations when it comes to spotting white rhino, as well as the rarer black rhino, leopard, cheetah and African wild dog. All these safari favorites are also likely to be encountered in Madikwe and Pilanesberg Game Reserves, as well as in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and the various small private reserves of the Eastern Cape. Outside of the major Big Five reserves, many parts of the country are still home to a variety of antelope, monkeys and small predators, all of which might be encountered by hikers and ramblers. Bird watching is consistently excellent throughout the country, while locally conspicuous marine wildlife includes penguins, whales and giant turtles.”

How safe is South Africa for tourists?

“Crime is a genuine issue in the larger cities, especially Johannesburg, but not so much in the game reserves, smaller towns and beach resorts that form the focal points of most South African safari trips. Follow local advice about safety, avoid walking around cities at night, and you should be fine. Malaria is absent from most parts of the country, the one major exception being Kruger National Park and its immediate environs, but even here the risk is far lower than in most other African safari destinations. Madikwe and Pilanesberg are Africa’s premier malaria-free safari destinations. Many reserves in South Africa offer guided walking safaris in areas inhabited by potentially dangerous animals such as elephant, black rhino and lion, but the risk of an incident is minimal provided that you listen to your guide at all times, and treat wildlife with respect. Possibly the biggest risk to life and limb in South Africa is a car accident, so self-drivers should adopt a more defensive and cautious approach than they might at home.”

How do I select a reliable tour operator for a South Africa trip?

“It’s worth doing a bit of research into operators before you book a South Africa tour. Look for reviews of any given operator on SafariBookings.com and possibly other online portals; the more reviews an operator has received, the more confident you can be of its reliability. If you have friends who have visited the country, or who live there, ask for word-of-mouth recommendations before booking any South African safari packages. Check out the company’s website too – as a rule its level of professionalism will reflect that of the company it represents. Once in South Africa, hotels and guesthouses can usually point you to tried-and-tested operators for day outings and other short local tours.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“South African safari accommodation ranges from no-frills campsites to exclusive upmarket lodges offering the last word in safari chic. In between these extremes, most national parks and provincial reserves have at least one well-run rest camp offering camping facilities and self-catering chalets (usually en suite but occasionally using shared bathrooms). For those who don’t want to immerse themselves in the bush, a selection of mid-range hotels can be found within easy driving distance of many national park and reserve entrance gates. Exclusive lodges are generally associated with private reserves and concessions that offer all-inclusive safari packages incorporating guided game drives and walks.”

What can I expect from South African safaris?

“Generally South Africa has a more developed feel than other African safari destinations. Most national parks and other reserves can be reached via good, surfaced roads, which certainly isn’t the case in many other parts of Africa. Some, such as Kruger, actually have an internal network of surfaced roads, and it is the only major African safari destination where a 4WD would be a luxury rather than a necessity, and the most suitable one for self-drive safaris. Likewise, most national park rest camps are well equipped for self-caterers, and many have well-stocked grocery shops. Further, the wildlife in South Africa is as wild as it is in most parts of Africa, the standard of guiding is unusually high, and people on organized safaris can expect excellent close-up sightings of everything from the Big Five to smaller animals such as birds and lizards.”

As South Africa’s favorite snack, you’ll find biltong throughout the country, from markets to restaurants. Biltong is made from cured meat, usually beef and game, and is served in dried slices, spiced with herbs. In South Africa, game refers to the animals of the bush like ostrich, kudu, impala and wildebeest.

South African biryani is a traditional dish originating from the Cape Malay culture. It’s made with lentils, meat like goat or chicken, vegetables like tomatoes and potatoes, and seasonings like garam masala, turmeric and chilli powder. It’s served with parboiled rice for a hearty meal.

Amasi is a popular dairy snack in South Africa, made from unpasteurised cow's milk stored in a calabash container to allow it to ferment. The thick liquid that remains tastes like plain yoghurt and is traditionally served in a clay pot, or poured over pap porridge.

Where to go when planning a Guided African Tour or Safari

One thing to keep in mind when planning, is that each part of South Africa is very different from the next. This is our list of places where you should go while here, but always keep in mind that with each place we mention, there are numerous other places surrounding it. For instance, say you go to Cape Town . Within Cape Town, there are hundreds of attractions, but journeying just outside of the city will present more than you bargained for. Think of it as micro-attractions within and around the main attraction. With this in mind, you won’t miss a thing!

Since we’re talking about Cape Town quite a bit, we might as well start this list with the Mother City. Cape Town is a brilliant place to visit, regardless of the time of year. It offers something all year round and the beauty of the city and its surrounds is undeniable. Not only will you find that there is a myriad of incredible beaches, which you will find difficult to tear away from during the summer, but there are many urban attractions including the V&A Waterfront and thousands of great places to eat.

And then there is Table Mountain, Boulders Beach (which is home to penguins) and just outside of the city, you’ll find acre upon acre of wine land country. Sun City and the Pilanesberg

This is a two in one treat. You get to have the safari experience, alongside some city fun! South Africa is a great place to experience a safari, and while the Kruger Park safari is the most popular destination, it is by no means the only wildlife destination. Game parks offering wildlife safaris are dotted all over South Africa. And some of the best South African safari packages are based in the Pilanesberg.

Much like other places in South Africa, the Pilanesberg is full of history. But not the kind you might be thinking. This reserve is in a crater and has many geologically significant points. Aside from that, it is also home to all kinds of animals; predators and plains game alike. We highly recommend staying more than a day in the Pilanesberg and we have just the tour package for you!

Kwa-Zulu Natal and Durban

Should you travel from Cape Town to the Pilanesberg and then head to Kwa-Zulu Natal, you will instantly notice that the landscape has made a dramatic change. Kwa-Zulu Natal could not be more different from the dry interior. This province is well known for its dramatic greenery as well as the intense humidity. The province has many safari destinations but it is best known for its beaches and for its historical landmarks. Many wars have taken place in this province and tourists can take tours of the battlegrounds while learning about the fights that have influenced South African history.

After exploring the province and visiting the battlegrounds and perhaps even enjoying a hike in the Drakensberg Mountains, taking a tour of Durban is a fantastic way to make sure that you have seen all that this part of the world has to offer.

Durban is a city filled with life and it is home to many different cultures. Much like Cape Town, there is plenty to do in and around the city, and a tour is the best way to get a genuine feeling for the city. Of all the incredible places to see in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Durban is the final jewel in the journey. And Durban is known as the “Playground” for a reason. Along with spending time on the beaches, you can also visit uShaka Marine World.

Kwa-Zulu Natal also gives tourists the opportunity to go on a real wildlife safari. The Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park is well-known for its white rhino conservation programme, and guests to the park will be in the perfect position to see these magnificent animals.

Province By Province: Other Must-See Places in South Africa

It is exceptionally difficult to decide on a single destination in this province. Many would say that this is South Africa’s tourism capital because it is home to the most popular areas of the Kruger National Park. For many tourists , the Kruger Park safari is the main reason why they venture to our country. Kruger Park safaris are as popular as ever. There is never a dull moment in the park and the only regret you might have is not spending more time here!

Limpopo is another of South Africa’s provinces that are home to countless safari destinations. The province is hot and dry; it is rugged and rustic. One of the best places to visit is up in the mountains, well away from the heat. We’ve already mentioned a safari destination, so instead of pointing out another one, we’re headed to the Magoebaskloof. In this area of the province, there are places to go fishing, places to enjoy a memorable meal and there are countless hiking trails. A self-drive is possibly the easier way to see the area in its entirety, however, if you should prefer not to drive yourself, there are tours available.

Kwa-Zulu Natal

Away from the busy tourist areas, you will find plenty of enjoyment in the Midlands as well as at various stops along the Drakensberg Mountain Range. A hike in the Drakensberg will possibly give you a different perspective of the world around you. The pictures simply don’t do these mountains any justice. You can experience all seasons in one day when you are in the mountains, so knowing what to pack and having some knowledge of the trail is very important. North West Province

Even with all the faults our country has, one thing is certain: we are committed to conservation! Just about every province has some conservation effort going on, and just about every nature reserve has a conservation programme running.

The Lion Park is devoted to the conservation of lions, and guests to the park will see lions in a way that they would never have otherwise seen them. Here you will have a different kind of unforgettable safari.

Although it is South Africa’s most urban province, it is just that characteristic that makes Gauteng such a stunning place to visit. Taking a tour around Pretoria, Soweto and Johannesburg is a must, as is paying a visit to all of the biggest landmarks, such as the Union Buildings. Both cities can be daunting to navigate if you haven’t been there before, so sometimes the best way to see everything is by touring with an operator.

A larger portion of the South African farming community is based here. So you can just imagine the flatlands filled with row upon row of maize plants. Even though the Free State might not seem like the most enticing destination, visiting Clarens makes it all worth it. Clarens is based in the foothills of the beautiful Maluti Mountains. This small town is perfect for hikers as well as for those looking for a romantic getaway.

Northern Cape

Also home to a few safari reserves, the Northern Cape is known for its extremely hot, desert-like climate. The big attraction that you shouldn’t miss seeing is the Big Hole. What started out as a mine has become a tourist attraction, and while it is disputed whether or not the Hole is the biggest hole excavated by land, it is truly a sight to see!

Eastern Cape

Arguably South Africa’s wildest province, the Eastern Cape is not only home to secret beaches, but it is also home to the Wild Coast. Kilometre upon kilometre pristine yet, well, wild beaches, along with small tourist towns, dot the coastline, enticing visitors. Western Cape
