Long Table event returns

PRINCE GEORGE – Tourism Prince George is bringing back the Long Table Harvest on Friday, Sept. 29. This event, which debuted last year, is now an annual celebration of Prince George’s food and beverage industry—which is a staple to the visitor economy.

“There was definitely an appetite for The Long Table Harvest when we launched it last fall. Tickets sold out within a week,” said Tourism Prince George’s CEO Colin Carson. “This year we’ve added more seats to the table, allowing more people to enjoy an evening of unique dishes prepared by local chefs using local ingredients.”

The event is also a night to appreciate local farmers, making the Long Table Harvest a true farm-to-table experience. This year the line-up of delicacies will include: cocktail hors d’oeuvres, two appetizers, a main dish and dessert. The multiple chefs, who will each present a course, come from an array of backgrounds ranging from specialty food trucks to restaurants. “We are looking forward to indulging in another unique take on locally grown and raised food,” added Carson. The event is open to the public. It will take place at Art Knapp Prince George on Sept. 29. Tickets for the event are now available

B.C. tourism stakeholders gathering for conference in Prince George

More than 300 delegates are expected for the BC Tourism and Hospitality Conference, March 1-3 at the Prince George Civic and Conference Centre, and they’re all invited to Otway Nordic Centre to try out our world-class cross-country ski and snowshoe trails before the conference gets cooking downtown the following day.

“Us and Northern BC Tourism Association are hosting the welcome reception and we really wanted to make it feel like Prince George and embrace that we’re in the north, so the reception will be held at the (home of the) Caledonia Nordic Ski Club,” said Tourism Prince George CEO Colin Carson.

“We’re going to encourage people to go outside. We have some ski rentals set up and we’ll have some fires set up, so it’ll be a bit of northern experience some of these folks coming from the Lower Mainland might not have experienced before.”

Walt Judas, CEO of the Tourism Industry Association of B.C., visits Prince George once or twice every year and this is a rare opportunity to get tourism stakeholders from all regions of the province together in a part of the province that's not a high-profile tourist destination.

“Because we’re an industry that’s so spread out we don’t often get a chance to connect with each other in personal settings and it’s such a big motivator because people like to talk about best practices and maybe partner on certain programs and initiatives,” said Judas, from his base in Vancouver.

“Many people that work in our sector have actually never experienced the north. They don’t know what it’s about. In as much as they’ve never thought of a vacation in Prince George or the north, this will be a catalyst for learning more about the culture and the people of the north and what Prince George and the surrounding region offers. As they learn more, they will be directing more people there, to be sure.”

The conference has never been held north of Kelowna. It was supposed to come to Prince George in 2021 but that was postponed by the pandemic. It was put off again last year with the Prince George Civic Centre still being used as the COVID vaccination site and Vancouver stepped up to stage the event.

“We’re just excited to host it and we’re fortunate to partner with the Northern B.C. Tourism Association to get the conference to Prince George,” said Carson. “For me, it’s always about networking with these  other destinations and really seeing what they’re doing or even ideas we can steal.”

Tourism Prince George is one of the nominees, along with Chilliwack and Victoria, for the professional excellence award, to be presented as part of the BC Tourism and Hospitality awards ceremony on the night of Wednesday, March 2. Northern FanCon is nominated, along with Barkerville Historic Town & Park, for the remarkable experience award, while Barkerville CEO Kate Cox is in the running for businesswoman of the year.

“While it may not have the amenities you’ll find in places like Vancouver, Kelowna, Whistler or Victoria, people love living in Prince George,” said Judah. “What it offers, the people that are there and the jumping points to the wonderful countryside, the outdoor adventure and what excursions they can go on, that’s really the big appeal, and it’s not that difficult to get to, especially in the summertime.”

Tourism PG expecting a banner year from high-profile events, hoping to keep up the pace

Tourism Prince George is expecting $1.5 to 1.6 million from hotel tax revenue by the end of the year — the highest amount it has ever collected

Article content

While the city emerged from COVID-19 restrictions, money started pouring into Tourism Prince George’s coffers. The organization is expecting its revenue to exceed pre-pandemic levels in 2022 after major events touched down in the city.

Tourism PG expecting a banner year from high-profile events, hoping to keep up the pace Back to video

As of July, Tourism PG has collected $980,000 from the Municipal and Regional District Tax program (MRDT). Before the end of the year, it is forecasting that number to reach between $1.5 and $1.6 million. If the organization’s projection materializes, the amount would then exceed the $1.3 million it made last year , which narrowly overtook the revenue it raked in 2019.

The MRDT, Tourism PG’s main source of revenue, flows from a three per cent provincial tax that people pay when they check into a hotel or a short-term accommodation. The revenue is then funnelled through cities and regional districts to tourism agencies.

According to Tourism PG CEO Colin Carson, the funding is the absolute lifeline for the agency, providing up to 80 per cent of their budget.

“That funding is just so important to us,” Carson says. “That enables us to have a staff of nine here, and continue to do marketing programs and promote Prince George, and create new videos, and do all those things to try and keep Prince George on the map.”

The windfall in revenue is not entirely surprising, given that Prince George played host to several major events in the past year, including the 2022 World Women’s Curling Championship in March and the 2022 B.C. Summer Games in July. Local entertainment in the city also bloomed with events such as Coldsnap, the Best Damn Music Festival, and Cirque Du Soleil.

Andy Beesley, director of recreation and events for the City of Prince George, says that scale of events this year isn’t totally unprecedented — but it is a boon nevertheless.

“It’s not standard in the sense that, because during the pandemic we were just so quiet in so many areas,” Beesley said. “It almost feels like these are very, very busy and brand-new days for us.”

He points back to the 2015 Canada Winter Games, referring to it as “one of the biggest things that we’ve ever had in the city.” Honorary mentions include previously hosting Cirque du Soleil and the 2019 World Para Nordic Skiing Championships. Beesley adds the city is well equipped to host such high-profile events and is looking to do more.

The province announced Monday afternoon that it is creating a “time-limited” Major Events MRDT of up to 2.5 per cent that cities can apply for on top of the existing three percent MRDT. According to a statement from the Ministry of Finance, the goal of the additional tax is to “ cover the cost of hosting major international tourism events that help bolster provincial tourism and the economy.”

The province says the additional MRDT resulted from a request from the City of Vancouver for funding to host select matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Selina Robinson, minister of finance, says that a similar initiative helped Whistler host the 2010 Olympics, adding that the government sees the “potential benefits for other communities that are working to put B.C. on the international stage and bolster our economy.”

The province says it wants to provide “ a way for other communities to access the same tool to help cover the cost of hosting major international tourism events.”

The update from Victoria follows news closer to home, where it was announced Friday that Prince George and the Caledonia Ski Club would host the 2024 FIS Para Biathlon World Championship and FIS Para Nordic World Cup Finals. Alongside the 2023 Nordiq Canada Selection Trials and Nordiq Cup in January, Tourism PG estimates the direct impact to the local economy from all three events to be in excess of $4.7 million.

Both Carson and Beesley admit that there have not yet been consultations on whether Prince George could or should try to apply for the additional funding from the province. Beesley says that it is “certainly something that we’re going to be looking at very closely.”

Carson says that the consultation both within Tourism PG as well as with stakeholders such as the City of Prince George is essential to make sure there is appetite to actually implement additional tax in the community.

When it comes to 2022, Carson says that the forecasted MRDT revenue would be the highest the agency has ever seen. Not only from the return of major events, but also the return of conferences, which are a big economic driver, he says.

“I think that what our community has done so well is, we’re not just relying on the traditional tourists coming for those specific events,” Carson explains. He says that travelling industry also plays a major role in supporting the local economy.

“Fortunately for our hoteliers and our restaurants … they were able to keep that momentum going during 2021 and 2022, and now we’re looking ahead and continuing to host these big events.”
