BEST Things to Do in Chicago This Weekend

savvyglobetrotter

Chicago is on my bucket list for a long time now, I would like to go there. My favorite part are festivals I would like to attend them there and definitely I would like to do the walk on the 606.

I would love to visit Chicago, It’s always been a city I’ve been drawn to and when I eventually do my USA road trip it will be one of the first places I visit and you’ve written a great list for me to start with. I can just see myself tucking into a pizza pie while sitting at the Riverwalk, listening to some Derick Carter (Chicago house DJ) and taking a wander around the city and I’ll definitely be taking in as many festivals as I can 😀

Great list! So many great free things to do in Chicago.

I need to get myself to Chicago soon! I have friends who live there and an open invitation to visit them anytime! The bean is so iconic, you relate chicago to it, so its a must visit for me. Also, I would love the river walk, it’s the kind of thing I enjoy. Also, Chicago’s lakefront trail looks pretty appealing.

The top 22 free things to do in Chicago

Karla Zimmerman

Jul 31, 2023 • 8 min read

This is a horizontal color photograph of people crowded around the landmark downtown Chicago's Cloudgate in Millennial Park. The urban cityscape is reflected in the mirrored surface. A couple takes a selfie in the foreground.

Chicago has plenty of great stuff to see and do for free - here are all the best bits © Boogich / Getty Images

From the Art Institute and skyscraper-viewing boat tours to world-class restaurants and bars, there is no shortage of places to spend plenty of money in Chicago.

But there are also many ways to experience the Windy City’s art and architecture, blues and city views without spending a dime. Keep your budget low with our roundup of the best things to do in Chicago for free.

1. Make the most of Millennium Park's free events

You could spend the entire day enjoying  Millennium Park ’s mother lode of freebies, especially in summer. Lean into the day during a morning yoga class, admire soaring public art and splash in the fountain-turned-water-park in the afternoon, then catch a concert at Pritzker Pavilion in the evening.

The free shows ( jazz and world music on Mondays and Thursdays; classical music on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays) are a Chicago highlight, where locals gather to picnic and sip wine as melodies fill the air.

2. Tours around the Chicago Cultural Center

The exquisite, beaux-arts, block-long Cultural Center began its life as the Chicago Public Library in 1897. Now it offers a treasure trove of gratis goodness, including museum-quality art exhibitions, foreign film screenings, music, dance, theater and family events.

On Thursdays and Fridays, volunteers and staff lead free hour-long walking tours of the building. On Fridays through Sundays, volunteers add free hour-long tours of downtown to the mix.

Navy Pier and Chicago's skyline in the background

3. Enjoy lakefront views from Navy Pier

Yes, it’ll cost you to spin on the Ferris wheel or set sail on a boat – the most popular things to do at Navy Pier  – but the cool breezes and terrific lakefront views are always free. The Pier also prides itself on its year-round program of complementary events , such as cultural celebrations, art exhibitions, al fresco films, and live music.

Top 7 day trips from Chicago

4. Watch Art on theMart in the evening

The Art on theMart video art extravaganza – a trippy light show projected on the world’s largest commercial building for 30 minutes twice each evening – is one of the quirkiest things to do at night in Chicago.

Best of all, it’ll delight your eyeballs free of charge. The timings change with the seasons – check the website for showtimes  during your visit.

5. Visit the Design Museum of Chicago's rotating exhibitions

The  Design Museum puts on cool exhibitions that change regularly and cover everything related to contemporary and historical design. Allow around 40 minutes to view the entire exhibition – it doesn't cost a dime, so take your time.

6. Catch live music for free at Buddy Guy’s Legends

Chicago’s musical claim to fame is the electric blues — and Buddy Guy’s is the place to hear a fret-bending set for nothing. While evening shows cost $15 to $25, musicians often play free acoustic blues or jazz at the restaurant/club during lunch and before the main performance starts at 8pm.

Planning tip:  All ages are welcome for these free shows, but it's strictly over-21 only for the main performances.

7. See the animals at Lincoln Park Zoo

Lincoln Park Zoo has entertained families for free for more than 150 years. Lions roar, apes swing, polar bears swim, and snow monkeys chill just blocks from downtown’s skyscrapers.

Best times to visit Chicago

8. Walk the city with a Chicago Greeter

Top-class walking tours in the Windy City don’t come as free and breezy as the two- to four-hour guided trips by Chicago Greeter . Choose a theme, maybe history or architecture, or pick a neighborhood, perhaps arty Pilsen or historic Uptown.

Book at least ten business days in advance. Not only is this service free, the greeters – all locals – adhere to a strict no-tipping policy.

9. Settle in at Whistler for eclectic performances

The Whistler is part-gallery, part-cocktail lounge and part-venue for local indie bands, jazz combos, electronica, country music, and DJs. There’s never a cover charge. Instead, most everyone purchases a snazzy drink to fund the nightly performances (although it's not compulsory).

The Fern Room of the Garfield Park Conservatory

10. Wander around Garfield Park Conservatory

The 1907 hothouse bursts with cacti, ferns and flowers. Outdoors, roam the grounds past a carnivorous plant bog, lily pool, labyrinth and Claude Monet’s recreated garden, then attend a demonstration on beekeeping or composting – all free.

Planning tip:  Though it's totally free, reservations are required for entry, and they get snapped up quickly. Book online before you arrive to avoid disappointment.

11. Explore African American arts and culture at Stony Island Arts Bank

The far-flung Stony Island Arts Bank now trades in cultural capital rather than cash. This rewarding free-to-visit center of African American arts hosts provocative exhibitions and works by new and emerging contemporary artists, as well as weekend DJ sets. Necessary renovations have resulted in a temporary closure, but the Arts Bank will reopen in Fall 2023.

12. Celebrate Latinx artworks at the National Museum of Mexican Art

Colorful folk art and politically charged paintings grace the walls at the free National Museum of Mexican Art , the USA’s largest Latinx arts institution. Afterward, amble around the neighborhood to see images of Aztec gods, singing gauchos and other works by Mexican muralists splashed across the buildings – a sort of outdoor gallery that continues the theme.

Adults and children in a large playground, with a big wooden climbing structure and metal tube slides

13. Have a family day out at Maggie Daley Park

Families love Maggie Daley Park ’s fanciful, free playgrounds in all their enchanted-forest and pirate-themed glory. Multiple picnic tables make the park an excellent spot to relax as well.

14. Follow the 606 between neighborhoods

An elevated train track converted into a smart, 2.7-mile trail, the 606 unfolds overhead and connects the hipster hoods of Bucktown, Wicker Park, and Logan Square. Look for murals, public art installations and cool views of L trains zipping by – it all costs nothing.

15. Learn about modern architecture at Charnley-Persky House

Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Charnley-Persky House when he was just 19 years old. Register in advance for the free 45-minute tours that run on Wednesdays at midday. See how he left behind the baroque decorations of Victorian design and kicked off a simple style that laid the foundation for modern architecture.

Buckingham Fountain lit up at sunset in Millennium Park, Chicago

16. Be dazzled by the light show at Buckingham Fountain

The centerpiece of Grant Park, Buckingham Fountain is one the world's largest with a 1.5-million-gallon capacity and a 15-story-high spray. The central fountain symbolizes Lake Michigan, with the four water-spouting sea creatures representing the surrounding states.

So far, so super-sized. The fountain then lets loose on the hour from 9am to the last showing at 10:35pm from early May to mid-October, accompanied at night by multi-colored lights and music, and all for free.

17. Play free arcade games at Replay Lincoln Park

A little off-the-beaten-path, this dark Chicago bar is loaded with scores of pinball machines, classic arcade games like Tetris , Donkey Kong and Paperboy , plus plenty of up-to-date beat-’em-ups like Mortal Kombat and Tekken 5  — all available to play for the cost of a drink.

Chicago’s best neighborhoods

18. Enjoy Chicago's best view at Signature Lounge

It’s the worst-kept secret in Chicago: Signature Lounge has the best views of the city’s skyline. Best of all, it’s free.

Take the elevator to the 96th floor of 875 North Michigan Avenue (still locally known as the John Hancock Center) and order a – admittedly pricey – beverage while enjoying the views from some 1000ft up in the sky. It’s even more impressive at night, but children aren't allowed in the lounge after 7pm. Be prepared for a crowd.

The exit steps of a metro station covered in brightly colored street art

19. Admire the murals and street art in Pilsen

The neighborhood of Pilsen is famous for its murals that splash across churches, schools and cafes, all of which can be seen for free and on foot.

The 16th Street railroad embankment unfurls a particularly rich vein, with 50 works by local and international artists adorning a 1.5-mile stretch between Wood and Halsted Streets.

The whole of 18th Street Station is a work of art, too — its walls and steps are adorned with murals. Don’t miss the house of muralist Hector Duarte, a few blocks southwest of the station. He’s covered it with his most striking work Gulliver in Wonderland .

20. Join the locals at popular Montrose Beach

Chicago has plenty of great beaches , but Montrose Beach – the dune-packed, nature-filled stretch of sand in Uptown – is amongst its most popular. Many rent kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and jet skis here, but with a good book, some shorts and a towel, it’s just as lovely whiling away a day for absolutely nothing.

21. Peruse the exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Photography

This free museum focuses on American and international photography from the early 20th century onward. The permanent collection includes the works of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Harry Callahan, Sally Mann, Victor Skrebneski, Catherine Wagner, and 500 more of the best photographers working today.

I've lived in Chicago for 31 years - here's what visitors need to know

22. Browse the fine arts collection at the Smart Museum of Art

Named after the founders of Esquire magazine, who contributed the start-up money, this is the official fine arts  museum of the University of Chicago.

The free collection holds 5000 years' worth of work. Twentieth-century paintings and sculptures, Central European expressionism and East Asian art are the strong suits. Hepworth, Warhol, and Kandinsky are just a few of the big-name artists on offer.

21 of the Best FREE Things to Do in Chicago (According to A Local)

08/10/2021 by Emily Becker Leave a Comment

There’s so much more to Chicago than deep-dish pizza, baseball games, and the Bean. All of those are lovely, but there are plenty of other neat ways to get to know the Windy City — for free! As a Chicago native myself, I am thrilled to introduce newcomers, repeat visitors, and even Chicago residents to some of my top free things to do there:

Table of Contents

21. Be a beach bum at Montrose Beach

tourist attractions chicago free

If you are visiting Chicago in the summer, you can’t miss out on a trip to the beach. If you’ve never been, you might be wondering how the Windy City has a beach. I hear you. It’s nothing like the pristine white-sand beaches of the Caribbean, but Lake Michigan’s pleasantly calm waters are perfect for taking a summertime dip.

Montrose Beach is on the north side of the city and has the most chill vibe of all the beaches in Chicago. It’s very family friendly, and you’ll see lots of people having cookouts in the grassy areas behind the beach. My favorite thing about this place is that Mexican popsicle and ice cream carts regularly make their rounds there.

Another neat feature of Montrose is the dog beach adjacent to it. Even if you aren’t a dog owner yourself, it’s fun to see the dogs having a blast running around and playing in the water.

20. See the animals at Lincoln Park Zoo

tourist attractions chicago free

Lincoln Park Zoo is easily one of the top things to do in Chicago, let alone one of the best free things to do. The zoo is on the north side, in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, as the name implies. It’s close to Lake Shore Drive and a great place to begin an entire day dedicated to this historic and charming area of the city.

The zoo is open every day and definitely attracts significant crowds in the warmer months. Consider getting a head start in the morning when it opens at 10am, so you can get a better view of the animals, especially if you’re visiting in the summer.

19. Find some peace at Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool

tourist attractions chicago free

Steps away from the famous Lincoln Park Zoo is the quaint Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool. This urban oasis free of the bustle of the city is surrounded by trees. Around the small pond, you’ll find species of local plants and plenty of serene places to sit and take in nature.

The history of the lily pool is a testament to Chicago residents’ long-standing dedication to preserving nature whenever possible. I used to go to this special spot often, and I always recommend that people stop there to take a breather while visiting the city. Add it onto your Lincoln Park Zoo visit for a quick recharge before your next activity.

18. Meander through the Lincoln Park Conservatory

tourist attractions chicago free

Just north of the Lincoln Park Zoo is the Lincoln Park Conservatory, where you can check out plant species from all around the world. You can visit any time of year, but spring and summer are especially ideal, because the gardens surrounding the conservatory are a beautiful place for a walk, a picnic, or a photo op.

The conservatory features four display houses: the Orchid House, the Fern Room, the Palm House, and the Show House, which hosts annual flower shows. Plan to spend at least 30 minutes to an hour walking through, unless you’re an overly enthusiastic plant lover like me — I could spend hours there just looking at all the flora.

The Lincoln Park Conservatory is open from 10am to 3pm from Wednesday to Sunday.

17. Soak up the sun at Oak Street Beach

tourist attractions chicago free

This downtown beach has a completely different vibe than Montrose. For starters, it’s much smaller and more crowded than most other beaches. However, the stark contrast between the sandy shore and the shimmering skyscrapers is nothing short of surreal.

Oak Street Beach is much more of a party scene: it has a bar and restaurant right on-site. They’re quite pricey, so consider bringing your own picnic if you want to save a few bucks. I recommend getting there early to secure your spot and avoid the mid-afternoon crowds that accumulate in the summer.

16. Stroll along the Riverwalk

tourist attractions chicago free

Chicago is known for the rivers that flow through downtown and into Lake Michigan. In the last decade, the city has worked hard to create the Riverwalk, so that pedestrians can take in the fantastic view of Chicago’s world-class architecture.

The walk is 1.5 miles long and perfect for an evening stroll. You’ll see musicians playing, art installations, and plenty of other visitors out and about. There are six different areas, or “coves” along the route: the Riverbank, the Jetty, the Water Plaza, the River Theater, the Cove, and the Marina. My personal favorite is the Marina, because there are many more places to sit and people-watch.

15. Enjoy Art on theMART at the Chicago Riverwalk

tourist attractions chicago free

One of the most prominent spots to see art along the Riverwalk is across from theMART building (formerly known as Merchandise Mart). Every night at 9 and 9:30pm, an art show is projected onto the massive façade of the building, creating a dazzling display. It’s completely free to visit and makes a great after-dinner stop.

To see when Art on theMART is operating, stay tuned to the website .

14. See some snapshots at the Museum of Contemporary Photography

tourist attractions chicago free

As one of the leading photography museums in the Midwest, it’s awesome that the Museum of Contemporary Photography doesn’t charge admission. It’s part of Columbia College Chicago and began its collection in the 1980s. Since then, it has accumulated over 16,000 pieces by over 1,500 artists.

The museum regularly features collections from both well-known photographers and Columbia students. You can even take a free tour of the museum led by a docent. Reservations to visit aren’t obligatory, but they are encouraged.

The Museum of Contemporary Photography is open from 10am-5pm (with the exception of Thursday when it closes at 8pm) from Tuesday to Sunday.

13. Admire the architecture at the Chicago Cultural Center

tourist attractions chicago free

Do you know where the world’s largest Tiffany glass–stained dome is? It’s OK if you don’t… it’s not really common knowledge. Just in case you wanted to see it, you can at the Chicago Cultural Center! This vintage building showcases some of Chicago’s finest architecture and is completely free to visit.

The Chicago Cultural Center often hosts free events, including musical performances, dance and theater shows, art exhibitions, and so much more . Since the building is a popular wedding venue and this results in closing parts of the center, avoid visiting on a weekend. A weekday morning is the best time to go.

You can visit the Chicago Cultural center any day of the week from 11am to 4pm.

12. Check out the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Tuesdays on the Terrace

It’s no secret that Chicago is known for its iconic blues and jazz music scene. There are plenty of venues to catch a blues and jazz show, but the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Tuesdays on the Terrace events are some of the best. The terrace at the museum boasts an incredible view of downtown Chicago, which is the ultimate scene for listening to some of the city’s best jazz musicians.

Check the Tuesdays on the Terrace schedule to see who’s playing and to make a reservation. Also, you can visit the museum itself for free on Tuesdays if you are an Illinois resident.

11. Have a movie night at Millennium Park

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Do312 (@do312)

This is another summertime must-do in Chicago. On Tuesday evenings at 6pm during the summer months, Millennium Park hosts a free film series. You can find the full schedule here .

I went to these free movies a lot when I lived in Chicago, and it was a blast to go with friends. We would bring a full picnic spread, which is common at these events. So pack up your picnic basket, get there 30 minutes early, and enjoy your favorite movie in a pretty epic setting.

10. Take a Chicago Greeter neighborhood tour

tourist attractions chicago free

Chicago has a reputation for Midwestern politeness, and the Chicago Greeter neighborhood tours are a perfect example of that. These operate in over 25 districts; local guides give you a complete rundown of the neighborhood’s history, culture, and unique gastronomy. The guides are volunteers who genuinely want to show the best of their neighborhoods.

Tours are completely free, but you must make a reservation 10 business days in advance on Chicago Greeter’s website . You’ll be able to choose the neighborhood you want to see; tours takes between 2 and 4 hours.

9. Step back in time at the Jackson Park Japanese Gardens

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tatiana (@bula_eva)

Near the Museum of Science and Industry lies historic Jackson Park, which contains a beautiful Japanese garden: the Garden of the Phoenix, aka Osaka Garden. With such a massive museum so close, this beautiful piece of history is often overlooked.

The garden was originally built in 1893 by the Japanese government as part of Japan’s contribution to the World’s Columbian Exposition. What stands now is an expansion of the original garden and features a variety of Japanese plants and sculptures.

8. Peep at art at the National Museum of Mexican Art

View this post on Instagram A post shared by National Museum of Mexican Art (@explorenmma)

This is another museum that always impresses me and makes me wonder how something so wonderful can be completely free. It is right in the center of the Pilsen neighborhood, which is historically Mexican but continues to suffer severe gentrification — a lot has changed in the last decade. However, Mexican art and culture is hugely important to the societal fabric of Chicago, and a few long-standing institutions still exist, including this museum.

Much of the museum’s art showcases the modern Mexican American experience, along with traditional Mexican art. It’s a flawless mix of old and new, delightfully displayed. The museum also hosts a variety of cultural events , including an epic Día de los Muertos party.

The National Museum of Mexican Art is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday through Sunday.

7. Get your chloro-fill at Garfield Park Conservatory

tourist attractions chicago free

Please excuse my terrible pun…

This is the second conservatory on this list and, in my opinion, the better of the two. While it’s not as centrally located as the one in Lincoln Park, the Garfield Park Conservatory is much bigger, less crowded, and more beautiful. In fact, it’s the third largest garden under glass in the world.

You must make a reservation to visit the conservatory; you can do so here . It is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm, with the exception of Wednesdays when it closes later at 8pm.

6. Breeze through Smart Museum of Art

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Smart Museum of Art (@smartmuseum)

If the sticker price of the Art Institute has you feeling discouraged, the next best art museum (which happens to be free!) is the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago. It houses a sculpture garden and various impressive exhibitions that feature world-renowned artists, such as Salvador Dalí and Edgar Degas, among others.

You can visit the Smart Museum of Art by making a reservation here . It is open from 11am to 4pm, Thursday through Sunday.

5. Check out the Hyde Park Art Center

The Hyde Park Art Center is the perfect place to catch a glimpse of Chicago’s brightest creative minds. It commits itself to showcasing diverse voices and challenging artistic norms with its groundbreaking exhibitions. The center hosts a plethora of events that are free to the public and feature Black artists, especially those from the neighborhood.

The center has sporadic hours, which you can check here .

4. Learn about sustainability at The Plant Chicago

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Plant (@insidetheplant)

The Plant is one of my favorite places in Chicago because it has a truly remarkable mission. A lot has changed since the building that houses the project was a fire station (former location until 2019 was a slaughterhouse in the meat-packing district!) — nowadays The Plant consists of several small businesses that operate in a circular economy, meaning that the by-products of one business must be beneficial in some way to another in the building.

Stop in for a visit and check out the brewery, bakery, community garden, and much more at The Plant. They hold free events throughout the year, including an awesome farmers market.

3. Volunteer for a day at a community garden

There are hundreds of community gardens all over the city of Chicago, all hoping to combat the city’s food desert issue. Chicago is a culturally, racially, and ethnically diverse city, which means that each neighborhood has its own unique social issues. One of them that spans across the city is food insecurity.

Chicago Community Gardeners Association works with local leaders to implement community garden programs. To learn more about them and to sign up to volunteer for a day, fill out an inquiry here . Not only will you be able to give back to Chicago while you visit, but you’ll have an awesome time doing it!

2. Catch a summer street festival

tourist attractions chicago free

Chicago becomes the land of festivals in the summertime. Each neighborhood has its own lineup, on a wide variety of themes. The city’s diversity shines at these festivals, as many of them showcase music, food, and art from different countries and cultural backgrounds.

A full schedule of Chicago’s free street festivals can be found here . Even if you visit during the spring, fall, or winter, you can still find a festival somewhere in the city.

1. Peer at the Navy Pier summer fireworks

tourist attractions chicago free

On Wednesday and Saturday nights between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend, Navy Pier hosts a spectacular fireworks show. The best spot to see them is from Navy Pier itself, which is an exciting place to wander around. There are a ton of restaurants, and the city just remodeled the entire pier a few years ago, so it’s quite a sight to see, even without the fireworks.

Stay up to date on the Navy Pier fireworks show here .

Pin me for later:

I have a lot of pride in my home city, in case you couldn’t tell. Chicago has so much to offer in terms of cultural diversity, entertainment, architecture, and gastronomy. From this list, you can definitely see that it’s totally possible to have an amazing time in the Windy City on a tight budget.

What are your favorite cities to visit on a budget?

Top Free Things To Do In Chicago

While many of Chicago's museums and attractions every so often have "free days," there are a number of tourist attractions offering free admission year-round. Also, be sure to see if you can include one of Chicago's festivals .

Here are the top free things to do in Chicago.

Buckingham Fountain

TripSavvy / Cory Giguere

Opened May 26, 1927, the Buckingham Fountain is one of Chicago's most recognizable landmarks, and its free hourly water show in the summer is fun for young and old. It was donated to the city by Kate Buckingham and is Chicago's centerpiece along the Lake Michigan shore. Controlled by a computer in its underground pump room, it's a dazzling display that makes for a fantastic photo opportunity and a picture perfect background, which is why you'll inevitably see a wedding party having portraits taken there during milder weather.

Chicago Cultural Center

The Chicago Cultural Center lures hundreds of thousands of visitors each year with numerous free events and proximity to Millennium Park . Besides featuring free music, dance and theater performances, the center frequently shows films, conducts lectures, displays art exhibits and offers family events. Architecture buffs also flock to the structure because it's a landmark building; it was built in 1897.

The interior details are stunning as it was originally intended to be a showpiece building to build Chicago's cachet as a sophisticated city to be taken seriously--a reputation not previously afforded to it in the mid-1800s. The skilled craftsmanship is obvious with the use of imported marble, hardwoods, polished brass, glass mosaics and stone. The show stopper is the 40 foot diameter Tiffany stained glass dome located on the south side of the building. Find out about events happening at the Chicago Cultural Center right here.

Lincoln Park Conservatory

Located at the north end of Lincoln Park Zoo , the Lincoln Park Conservatory features four serene greenhouses (Orchid House, Fern Room, Palm House and Show House) all displaying fantastic arrays of flora. During summer, venture outdoors to find a lush, French garden filled with a large variety of plants and flowers, and a beautiful fountain. Many Chicago residents utilize this space to sit and read, toss a football around, let their kids run freely or just take in the beauty of nature.

Lincoln Park Zoo

For its part, Lincoln Park Zoo is one of the oldest in the United States. It was established in 1868, yet has been continuously updated and is amongst the most contemporary in terms of education, recreation and conservation. The zoo is unique in that it offers an intimate setting that allows visitors a closer look at the animals than most sprawling zoo settings. It is dedicated to permanently keeping its admission policy free for everyone. The zoo, in fact, is the only free zoo in Chicagoland, and one of the last free major wildlife attractions in the country.

Millennium Park

Best Murals in Chicago

Chicago has some of the most amazing street art in the world . Here are a few of my personal favorites! All of these murals are great “mural hubs” meaning there are tons of other murals and street art in the neighborhood!

Budget tip: Chicago’s train system is super easy to use and if you’re just in town for the day, I highly recommend getting a Metra day pass. If you’re staying for the weekend or longer, I would get a Ventra card and download the Ventra App to load your card using your phone. I also recommend renting a Divvy bike .

Greetings From Chicago Mural (Logan Square)

Logan square is a street art GOLD MINE! The Greetings from Chicago mural is a classic and I don’t think anyone should leave Chicago without a snap of this wall!

Humboldt Park is a 207-acre park in the heart of Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood, known for being a hub of the city’s Puerto Rican community and packed with drool-worthy restaurants and cafes.

Tip: I highly recommend Cafe Colao for delicious local hot sandwiches.

The Chicago Lakefront Trail

The Chicago Lakefront trail is a 18.5-mile-long trail lined with picturesque skyline views, beaches, and numerous lush green parks. It’s a MUST!

Budget tip: rent Divvy bikes to ride the trail. Watch out for other runners and bikers!

Lincoln Park Zoo

While zoos in some cities may offer monthly free days, the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago is free EVERYDAY! The Lincoln Park Zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and charges $0 for admission.

Visit some of the 200+ different animals, wander through the colorful gardens, and enjoy a day exploring Chicago’s 35-acre community zoo.

Pro tip: Check out Lincoln Park Conservatory while you’re in the area!

Jackson Park (Hyde Park)

Jackson Park is my favorite park in Chicago. If you want to escape the city life without actually leaving, wander through Jackson Park!

Pro tip: Pack some snacks and spend a day exploring all of the park’s different features! Jackson Park has multiple different green features such as the Garden of the Phoenix, Bobolink Meadows, and a community vegetable/flower garden. There’s a lot to check out and this could be a great way to spend a laid-back Saturday, while taking it easy on your wallet.

The Garden of the Pheonix (Inside Jackson Park)

Also known as Chicago’s Japanese Garden or Osaka Garden , the Garden of the Phoenix has been a long-standing cultural staple of Chicago’s Japanese American community, and frankly, can offer a sometimes much-needed retreat from all the hustle and bustle of the city!

Pro tip: If you’re visiting Chicago in the Spring, go check out the cherry blossom trees in Jackson Pack. The area surrounding the Garden of the Phoenix and Columbia Basin is home to around 190 cherry blossom trees and the flower viewing in April/May is spectacular.

Nature Boardwalk at the Lincoln Park Zoo

The boardwalk at the Lincoln Park Zoo is surrounded by a lush, prairie-like ecosystem of plants, trees, and wildlife; all of which are native to the midwest!

You can find the boardwalk at the southernmost end of the zoo, east of Café Brauer.

Lincoln Park Conservatory

Lincoln Park Conservatory not only showcases a plethora of exotic and tropical plants for the community to view and enjoy, it also grows thousands of the plant varieties that you’ll find in parks all around Chicago!

If you’re looking for an activity that will keep you toasty during a Midwestern snow day, this should be one of your go-tos!

Milton Lee Olive Park

Milton Lee Olive Park was designed in 1965 to commemorate Chicagoan Milton Lee Olive III, the first African American to receive the Medal of Honor. It has gorgeous views of the Chicago skyline and plenty of space for walking, jogging, and biking; or just lounging in the sun.

Free Things to Do Downtown Chicago

You may think that downtown Chicago is the most expensive part of the city – and for the most part, you’re not wrong. That said, some of the best tourist spots in Chicago are located downtown and they’re completely free!

tourist attractions chicago free

Buckingham Fountain

Located in Grant Park, Clarence F. Buckingham Memorial Fountain is one of the largest fountains in the world! It was inspired by the Latona Fountain at the Palace of Versailles and designed to represent lake Michigan.  The fountain runs from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. from May – October and produces a 20-minute-long water display at the start of every hour, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Tip: This could be a great spot for a photo opp, especially at night!

Chicago Riverwalk

The riverwalk is a 1.25-mile-long path that’s located on the south bank of the Chicago River. As you’re walking down the path you’ll notice tons of restaurants, cafes, bars, public art and monuments along the walkway. It’s a great way to find other things to do and experience cool views downtown! Tip: Grab an affordable lunch or snack to go and sit along the riverwalk.

Crown Fountain

Crown Fountain is an interactive public art piece, video sculpture, and water fountain in Chicago’s Loop neighborhood.

Personally, I don’t see the hype around Crown Fountain, but it’s a tourist attraction so I included it. Let me know what you think.

Largest Starbucks in the World (Starbucks Reserve)

The Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Chicago, which opened in September 2019, is the largest Starbucks location in the world and the latest roastery to be built . Inside this gorgeous 35,000 square foot space, you’ll find multiple coffee bars (including one for barrel-aged coffee), a cocktail bar, a pastry cafe, an Italian-style sandwich shop, a rooftop observation deck, and so much more. One of my favorite elements is the eight 56-foot-tall copper tubes that transport coffee beans from floor to floor. It’s a must-see!! Please note, the sights and smells are free, but the snacks and drinks are for purchase.

Michigan Avenue (Magnificent Mile)

Chicago’s Magnificent Mile is a 13-block stretch of Michigan Avenue that’s famous for its upscale, designer retail stores and its showcase of fashion, flavor, and entertainment. With over 460 stores, 275 restaurants, and 60+ hotels along the length of the strip, it’s one of the United States most distinguished shopping destinations.

You’ll find few things along Mag Mile that are actually free, but if you’re a master of self-control and enjoy teasing your wallet, the window shopping here is top-notch.

Grab a coffee (possibly from Starbucks Reserve) and take a stroll down Chicago’s premier shopping district.

Navy Pier is one of Chicago’s most popular tourist destinations , and has no shortage of free activities to check out throughout the year! Catch a live music performance along the waterfront, take in the skyline views, snap some photos with the iconic Centennial Wheel, watch a summer firework show, or just hangout at the pier.

Millennium Park

Millennium Park is Chicago’s urban playgroup and one of the city’s top attractions. Inside you’ll find the Cloud Gate sculpture, Lurie Garden, and unique art installations scattered around the park.  There is a free concert series every summer called the Millenium Park Summer Music Series. Concerts feature artists from across all genres, including R&B, house, disco, jazz, pop, country, and world music. Bring a blanket, lawn chairs, and snacks and enjoy a free concert. Here is the upcoming schedule for 2024.

Maggie Daley Park

Maggie Daley is a 20-acre park in Chicago’s Loop neighborhood. There’s picnic groves, a tennis court, fantastic paths for roller skating, and a whimsical play garden for kids. This park is a great option for families with kids who are looking for something fun and free to do on a sunny day in the city.

Cool book stores in chicago.

Chicago is packed full of free things to do throughout the year, and many of the city’s free options can be found outside of the main tourist drags.  Below are a few free and unique things to do in Chicago that are a little off the beaten path.

Myopic Books (Wicker Park)

Myopic Books is my favorite used bookstores in the city . I always grab a green juice at the cafe next door and spend an hour or so rummaging through books inside. There are even comfy chairs inside to sit and read until your heart desires.

The Best Chicago Neighborhoods to Wander Around

One of my favorite things to do is walk around cute neighborhoods , poke around local shops, and people watch. These are some of my favorite neighborhoods in Chicago perfect for wandering around aimlessly.

Chinatown is one of Chicago’s most unique neighborhoods . Pop through the traditional specialty shops, admire the Nine Dragon Wall, or plan a winter trip to come watch Chinatown’s Lunar New Year Parade !

Tip: there’s a “You are Beautiful” mural worth checking out in Chinatown on the main drag.

Free Things To Do in Chicago

tourist attractions chicago free

This post will cover some of the best free things to do as well as places to visit in Chicago.

We include daytime, nighttime, seasonal, and family-friendly attractions and activities, all updated for 2024.

As local tour guides who live on a budget in Chicago, we know a thing or two about finding things to do for free.

In this video, Andy, a tour guide with us, Free Tours by Foot Chicago, lists some of the top things to do in Chicago for free or close to free

We lead hundreds of people each day on tours, and we are asked about free things to do on just about every single tour.

We've used these experiences to help craft this post.

Additionally, we also incorporated some of the tips from members of our Chicago Travel Tips Facebook group.

Free Things to Do in Chicago

Engage with locals, like our tour guides, expats, regular visitors, as well as newbies to Chicago.

Now, without further ado, our ultimate list of free things to do in Chicago.

1. Take a Free Sightseeing Tour

Operating on a pay-what-you-like basis, this option allows you to choose the expense of this endeavor.

Free Tours By Foot offers an assortment of walking tours, as local guides lead you through various parts of the city, filling the time with facts and anecdotes about the area.

You’ll be sure to walk away satisfied and with suggestions of what to eat and see for the rest of your stay.

Check out the calendar for tour options and times .

In addition to our name-your-own-price guided tours, we also offer self-guided tours and GPS-enabled audio tours .

2. Enjoy a Free Concert or Festival

Each year, Chicago hosts over 400 festivals throughout the city.

All the below festivals are free and feature live music, food, drinks, and art.

Some of the most popular festivals include:

SummerDance in Grant Park (June-September) SummerDance provides fun for the whole family!

One-hour dance lessons are followed by live music performers of all different genres when dancers can put their new moves to practice.

Note that Grant Park is the location of Clarence Buckingham Fountain, one of the largest fountains in the world, and perhaps best known for appearing in the opening credits of "Married with Children."

Chicago Blues Festival (June)

During three days, 500,000 fans flood the 5 stages of the Chicago Blues Festival, making it the largest free blues festival, and the largest music festival in Chicago.

Chicago Gospel Music Festival (June)

Local, national, and international Gospel Music performers provide soul music for the people of Chicago during this weekend festival.

Grant Park Music Festival (June-August)

This music festival stretches through the entire summer season, providing 10 weeks of classical music concerts.

These include performances by the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra, the Grant Park Chorus, and other featured performers on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights.

Open House Chicago (October)

During Open House Chicago, explore some of the most intriguing buildings throughout the city that are normally off-limits to the public.

Lights Festival on the Magnificent Mile (November)

Kick off the holiday season with the Festival of Lights. With a parade and fireworks, the city comes to light during this annual event.

Christkindl Holiday Market at Daley Plaza (November-January)

Based on the German tradition, this is one of the largest Christmas markets in the United States, bringing in over 1 million visitors annually.

Find a full calendar of Chicago festivals here .

3. Visit a Free Museum

There are several great free museums in Chicago.

Those that are not always free typically have free hours, free admission days, or sometimes free events.

There are also several ways to save money on museum admission like getting a  tourist attraction discount pass .

One of our favorite free museums in Chicago is the National Museum of Mexican Art.

It is located in Pilsen, the heart of Chicago’s Mexican community.

You may want to combine your visit to the museum with a Mexican Pilsen Food Tour !

Another is the Oriental Institute Museum at the University of Chicago, which displays artifacts of the ancient Middle East.

It's free to visit for the University of Chicago members and their guests.

It's free for others as well although there is a suggested admission fee.

Below we list several other free museums and attractions.

4. Stroll Through a Chicago Neighborhood

Many tourist attractions are centralized in the Loop, but you'll learn more about Chicago by visiting one of its neighborhoods Wicker Park .

You can take one of our neighborhood tours, like a tour of Lincoln Park that focuses on its Gangster history.

Chicago Travel Tips and Hacks

Baseball fans need to check out our Wrigleyville Guide .

If you like to explore new places through their restaurants and eat like a local, take one of our self-guided food tours.

This is a way to learn about the history of and try a few food samples as you go:

  • Greektown Food Tour
  • Little Italy Food Tour
  • Andersonville Food Tour
  • Mexican Pilsen Food Tour

5. See Chicago Architecture for Free

We offer a free, guided Architecture Tour that covers some of the unique structures of the Chicago skyline.

One free building that is a must-see is the Chicago Cultural Center .

You can take a free guided tour of the building but you should call ahead of time to reserve a spot.

In this video below, Andy takes you on a tour of the historic South Loop neighborhood of Chicago, and sees the oldest surviving examples of the skyscraper, dating back to the 1890s.

Step inside the center to admire the two Tiffany stained glass domes and catch the view of Millennium Park.

You can also catch the art exhibits, shows, films, and lectures that take place here.

6. Take the Kids to a Park

After a day at the museums, sometimes you just need to run around.

There are a lot of ways to explore Chicago's outdoors from visiting Lake Michigan to exploring Chicago’s Beautiful Parks .

We list all of our suggested free things to do with kids in the section below.

Millennium Park

Millennium Park is free to roam and is one of the highlights of a visit to the Loop in downtown Chicago.

This is where you'll get a chance to visit the famous Bean and see the park where locals and visitors alike attend concerts .

We explore the park on our Millennium Park Tour!

7. Discover Chicago's Public Art

The art in Chicago isn't always in museums. Much of what you can find in the city is public art.

Be sure to look for the dozens of sculptures and other pieces of art along the Magnificent Mile .

You can also find public art in parks and plazas and throughout many neighborhoods in Chicago.

Read more about public art in Chicago .

8. Consider an All-Inclusive Tourist Attraction Discount Pass

Although the pass itself isn’t free, some of the activities available with an all-inclusive  tourist attraction discount pass could be free if you use it effectively.

For example, if you get this attraction pass and use it to take a bus tour , or visit the Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum , the service will already have paid for itself.

After that point, every activity you take part in is entirely free.

You could take this opportunity to see the city from above at the Skydeck or the Art Institute .

Whatever you choose to do, there are quite a few fun and family-friendly attractions included with a city pass.

9. Take a Brewery Tour

Designed by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, the Crown Fountain features two 50-foot towers that face each other at opposite ends of a shallow reflecting pool. The towers' LED screens project the faces of 1,000 different Chicago residents, which are perfectly aligned with spouts so that it appears they are spitting water on passersby. The water flows mid-spring through mid-fall, while the faces are projected year-round. Cloud Gate – created by British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor – is a 110-ton bean-shaped sculpture forged from stainless steel. The Bean's elliptical shape reflects the Chicago skyline. The first thing you'll spot once you set foot on the pier is the towering Ferris wheel (which stands 196 feet tall); you'll also find a drop tower and a carousel. Once the kids have had their fill of thrill rides, you can spend some time cruising the Chicago River on a sightseeing or speedboat tour or spend a few hours exploring the Chicago Children's Museum , with hands-on exhibits ranging from treehouses to fire trucks.

But you don't have to be a kid to enjoy a visit to Navy Pier. Grown-ups can catch a show at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, flex some credit card muscle at a variety of shops or grab a drink at the Navy Pier Beer Garden. And be sure to check Navy Pier's website for a list of events: Concerts are often held here, and from Memorial Day to Labor Day (as well as New Year's Eve), impressive fireworks displays light up the skies on Wednesday and Saturday nights. Many of the city's top Segway tours offer special summer evening tours to the pier to catch the semiweekly fireworks show.

360 CHICAGO Observation Deck 360 CHICAGO Observation Deck

One of Chicago's most notable attractions is its skyline, and one of the best places to experience it is at the 360 CHICAGO Observation Deck. Formerly known as the John Hancock Observatory, 360 CHICAGO towers 1,000 feet over The Magnificent Mile from its location on the 94th floor of the John Hancock Center (or 875 North Michigan Avenue as its more formally known). Encased by floor-to-ceiling windows, 360 CHICAGO boasts expansive views of the city; on a clear day, you can see four states. Meanwhile, the interactive screens will help you identify different landmarks that appear in your panorama.

For a different point of view (and an adrenaline rush), test out 360 CHICAGO's TILT. In this mechanized room, visitors hold on to handlebars as the top of the room's windows extend outward, tilting you toward bustling North Michigan Avenue down below. For another memorable way to immerse yourself in the views, try ClouldWalk, a 3D art experience introduced in 2022. Mural artist Nate Baranowski created an optical illusion on the observation deck that makes visitors feel as though they are standing on a crane platform in the clouds.  Should you prefer to experience the view without feeling your heart skip a beat, grab a cup of coffee, a glass of wine or a snack at the cafe and bar, or look for souvenirs in the gift shop.

Some of the most popular parts of the museum include the "Inside Ancient Egypt" exhibit, which features a reconstruction of a three-story replica of an Egyptian tomb, one of the largest collections of mummies in the United States and interactive representations of life on the Nile. There's also the Restoring Earth area in the Abbott Hall of Conservation, where visitors can learn more about sustainability through hands-on activities. But no visit to The Field Museum would be complete without some quality time with SUE, the facility's T. rex who just happens to be the largest, most complete T. rex ever discovered. SUE is 40 feet long from nose to tail and boasts 55 terrifying teeth.

Skydeck Chicago at the Willis Tower Skydeck Chicago at the Willis Tower

More than 1.7 million people make their way to Willis Tower's Skydeck Chicago each year, and it's easy to see why. Visit on a sunny day and you may be able to see far beyond Chicago's borders to Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and other parts of Illinois.

The highlight for most visitors is the Ledge. Extending 4.3 feet beyond the building's exterior, this platform is made entirely of glass – even the floor. Travelers also liked the video screens that show what it would be like to stand 103 floors above other Chicago attractions, including Wrigley Field and Millennium Park . However, long lines quickly form for Skydeck Chicago, so plan on arriving early or purchasing a Chicago CityPASS, which covers expedited admission into the attraction. The Chicago Theatre The Chicago Theatre

Aside from Cloud Gate and Buckingham Fountain , The Chicago Theatre's red and yellow marquee is perhaps one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. Illuminating North State Street at the northern edge of the Loop, The Chicago Theatre first opened its doors in 1921 as an extravagant movie theater and performance venue. Throughout its history, the theater has hosted such big names as Duke Ellington, Diana Ross and Prince, in addition to screening blockbuster flicks. Though the theater fell into disuse in the 1970s, new management and a full renovation in the 1980s helped return the venue to its former glory. Today, the theater is still used for a variety of comedic, theatrical and musical performances.

According to past patrons, the theater's historic appearance enhances the overall experience of catching an event here. Just remember, cameras and video cameras, including those on cell phones, cannot be used during tours or performances. If you're not in town for a show, consider signing up for one of the venue's guided tours. Tour tickets cost $20 for adults and $15 for kids ages 12 and younger. This guide highlights the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Award winners of Chicago, from awesome restaurants and bars to the greatest hotels, events, and activities in this world-class town.

Chicago has been voted among the top 10 for Best Beer City , Most Walkable City in the U.S. , and Best Summer Destination , among others — all for good reason!

Insider tip: The hotel’s rooftop terrace overlooks the city with bird’s-eye views of fireworks at Navy Pier (crowned the Best Place to See Fireworks .)

The Peninsula Chicago Hotel is an extraordinary place to roost. Z Bar, Pierrot Gourmet, and Shanghai Terrace beckon with warm weather terraces and stellar food and beverage. Afternoon tea service in The Lobby is especially festive during the holidays when the hotel does it up with live music, extravagant decor, ice skating, and spectacular overnight packages. Those are just a few reasons readers voted this establishment among the best hotels for the holidays .

Need relief from the buzz of the city? Book a seasonal treatment at Leaf Spa at Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park , voted one of the best hotel spas in the country.

Environmentally minded visitors go for the LEED Gold-certified Virgin Hotels Chicago , voted one of the country’s best eco-friendly hotels .

The Publishing House , which has earned a 10 best ranking for Best Bed and Breakfast , will completely change the minds of travelers who don’t think they like bed and breakfasts, thanks to the chic decor, laid-back ambience, and outstanding breakfast near Chicago’s Restaurant Row.

Readers voted SOPHY Hyde Park as a Best Boutique Hotel . The South Side vibe combined with the hotel's smart rooms, artistic indoor, and outdoor spaces complements the cultural essence of the neighborhood that the Obamas once called home.

Best Chicago restaurants, cafes, and sweet shops

Asador Bastien is one of the best new restaurants in Chicago (and the country!)

When that midafternoon snooze hits, sip a phenomenal cup of joe at Big Shoulders Coffee , a Best Independent Coffee Shop winner. With a former chef-turned-coffee roaster at the helm, stop here for no-nonsense artisan beans, roasted to perfection.

There are handmade candies galore at Windy City Sweets , a 2023 winner for Best Candy Store , from nostalgic treats to signature, homemade fudge, s’mores, and more. At Katherine Anne Confections , which got a nod for Best Chocolate Shop , you’ll find seasonal flavors plus classics like salted caramel.

Stock up on bakery goods or enjoy biscuits and gravy and two-fisted sandwiches at Wheat's End Cafe , one of the best gluten-free bakeries in the country.

One of the best things to do in Chicago: Deep-dish pizza (even gluten-free!) at Chicago's Pizza

In a city that takes its pizza seriously, both Chicago’s Pizza and Robert’s Pizza and Dough Co. made the top 10 for best gluten-free pizzerias for their in-house crusts and array of toppings.

The Oakville Grill & Cellar , one of 2024’s best new restaurants, has a great happy hour and weekend brunch. Featuring ingredients from farms and ranches across the Midwest, enjoy menus for lunch and dinner on the all-season patio.

Chicago has a plethora of notable steakhouses, and Asador Bastian , a Basque-inspired chophouse in River North's Gallery District, is something really special. Another Best New Restaurant winner, here you'll enjoy several varieties of flame-kissed beef, seafood, and a tortilla Española that will whisk you right to San Sebastian, Spain.

Traveling to or from Chicago? Don’t overlook the restaurants at O’Hare Internationl Airport , one of the best airports for dining . Notable stops include Rick Bayless’ Tortas Frontera, Berghoff Cafe for German items, cheeseburgers at Billy Goat’s, or Gold Coast Dogs for Chicago-style hot dogs and Italian beef sandwiches. For drinks, hangout at Goose Island Beer Company or Publican Tavern.

Best Chicago bars

With so many breweries and brewpubs, Chicago is a city for suds

With more than 160 Chicago breweries capturing the imagination and outsider appeal of craft beer culture, this Best Beer City continues to bag a barrel-full of awards.

Pilot Project Brewing , a springboard for startup breweries bringing exciting new brews from around the world, and Sleeping Village are both award-winning beer bars . Visit the Pilot Project Brewing’s incubator and taproom to sample beer, craft non-alcoholic brews, tea, and coffee.

Among 2024’s best new breweries , Black-owned Funkytown Brewery brings diversity to the craft brew space, winning multiple awards for suds like Hip-Hops, R&Brew, and Cuffin’ Season. Also voted a Best New Brewery by USA TODAY 10Best readers: Turner Haus, a Black, family-owned enterprise in Bronzeville. They brew and name beers after the family matriarchs.

Don’t miss women-owned ERIS Brewery and Cider House , which topped the list as Best Cidery in the country.

Best events in Chicago

The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival was voted among the best holiday parades in the country

Chicago teems with festivals. Windy City Smokeout, an outdoor country music and BBQ festival, was a winner of the Academy of Country Music Awards' Festival of the Year, as well as a USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Award for Best Specialty Food Festival . Count on an impressive lineup featuring some of country music’s biggest names, along with the ultimate BBQ and craft beer from around the country.

A Chicago tradition since 1980, the Taste of Chicago thrills locals and visitors who want to experience Chicago’s expansive food scene, peppered with live music, entertainment, and family fun. The free-admission event takes place over three days in Grant Park. Chicagoans don’t mourn the end of festival season when the first leaves float off trees; they just keep partying!

The Chicago German-American Oktoberfest is a wunderbar Best Oktoberfest filled with music, dancing, and lots of wurst, pretzels, and beer.

The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival winds down Michigan Avenue and up to a top 10 spot on the Best Holiday Parade list. Stroll over to Christkindlmarket , the award-winning German-style bazaar that will fill you with holiday cheer.

Best attractions and other things to do in Chicago

The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the best things to do in the city

Whether participant or fan, the Windy City has a roster of activities for sports fans year-round. One of two classic historic ballparks still standing in the U.S., Wrigley Field , clutched a spot as one of the best MLB stadiums .
