The Balcony of Europe and Caletilla Beach in Nerja (Malaga, Andalusia)

Located in the historic region of La Axarquía, Nerja is bright town on the Málaga coast which has a beautiful sea front formed by beaches, coves and cliffs.

Its historic quarter has fine examples of popular architecture, with lovely walks and emblematic spots such as the Balcón de Europa, a splendid viewpoint over the sea. The area has been populated since prehistoric times, as the cave paintings found in the famous caves of Nerja, known as the “prehistoric cathedral”, reveal.

Its busy calendar of festivals, as well as the tasty dishes which make up the local cuisine, make the attractions of Nerja complete. Nerja, located on the western end of the Costa del Sol , has all the ingredients to charm any visitor. Its annual average temperature, around twenty degrees Celsius, the beautiful mountain landscape of Málaga's La Axarquía region, as well as a rugged coastline of beaches and cliffs, are just some of its attractions. The beach of Burriana is one of the most important around the town. Backed by housing developments, it is an extensive stretch of sand some 700 metres long equipped with all kinds of facilities and services. On a cliff overlooking the beach stands the Parador de Turismo . La Torrecilla , El Salón or Calahonda , this latter one located under the Balcón de Europa, are other beaches in town. On them, the visitor will find everything is to hand: from housing developments, modern hotels and restaurants to shops and places to hire sports gear. Emerging from among picturesque cliffs are quiet coves of great natural beauty, such as La Caleta , la Cala Barranco de Maro or las Calas del Pino . On all of them, as well as being able to enjoy a refreshing dip, it is possible to do all kinds of water sports, from windsurfing to sailing. The cave of Nerja The cave of Nerja , discovered in 1959, is one of the town's major tourist attractions. Declared to be a Historic - Artistic Monument , it possess almost two kilometres of underground galleries which are open to the public. Here you can admire the surprising geological formations sculpted by the slow passing of the centuries. High vaults and spacious halls decorated with columns , stalactites and stalagmites have caused it to be known as the “Prehistoric Cathedral”. The Hall of the Waterfall , so-called because of the peculiar shapes formed by its groups of stalagmites, is the exceptional setting for the Cave of Nerja Festival , which, for more than three decades, has gathered together the most prestigious figures from the world of music, dance and the performing arts. The cave is also of archaeological interest, since it houses a collection of cave paintings attributed to the Paleolithic period, although remains from other periods, such as the Epipaleolithic or Neolithic have been found. In the Entrance Hall there is an interesting collection of ceramic pieces, tools and paintings found on the site. The old town Nerja boasts fine examples of the typical local architecture. Among its sites, it is possible to mention the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias , patron of the town. Built in the 16th century, on the inside are outstanding frescoes which decorate its dome. Standing on the remains of a historic coastal bastion is one of the town's most emblematic spots: the Balcón de Europa , today transformed into a lively promenade which ends at the splendid viewpoint overlooking the sea. Striking among the coastal architecture are the great many watchtowers which stand along the shore. The Torre de Maro , a fine example of this kind of construction, provides some of the best views of the surrounding area. In the area of Barranco de la Coladilla stands the Águila Aqueduct . This magnificent feat of 19th century engineering, still in perfect working order, has four rows of arches on top of one another and, in the highest section, an entrance niche and another central niche. Gastronomy, festivals and surrounding area Nerja has a wealth of gastronomic tradition, with tasty dishes such as "ajoblanco con uvas" (cold soup with almonds, oil, garlic and grapes), imagora salad or noodle casserole . From the sea come dishes such as Burriana sea bream on the grill or fish and clams with paprika. The raisins from La Axarquía or "torta sanjuanera" (made with flour, sugar, oil, eggs and aniseed) will round off a tasty meal, always accompanied by Designation of Origin Málaga wines. Outstanding among the many local festivals is the Nerja Fair (from 8 to 12 October), in honour of the town's patrons, the Virgen de las Angustias and San Miguel Arcángel. On 15 May, the San Isidro Pilgrimage is held. Meanwhile, on the Day of the Virgen del Carmen , on 16 July, an image of the Virgin is carried in procession around the coastal area. Nerja and its surrounding area, La Axarquía, have numerous surprises in store for the visitor. Nature lovers will enjoy a visit to the nearby Maro - Cerro Gordo Beauty Spot , an impressive headland with cliffs and crowned by a tower. To the north of Nerja is Frigiliana , which has a prehistoric necropolis. Tourist towns appear along the coast, such as Torre del Mar or Rincón de la Victoria . A trip inland takes you to Vélez - Málaga , dominated by the castle which gives the city its name. From the capital of the region, you can discover villages with a clear Arab legacy, such as Árchez, Comares , Alcaucín or Viñuela

Shopping/Supermarkets

Groceries can be bought at the Mercadona which is closed on Sundays as well as Supersol and Iranzo.

Nerja

The Costa del Sol is known for its golf courses, but as Nerja sits at the foot of the Sierra Nevada the hilly terrain doesn’t benefit from the game of golf.

Weather and Climate

As mentioned before Nerja is blessed to have the Sierra Nevada with ski resort of Pradollano an hour away by car which means tourists in the winter can ski in the mornings and spend the afternoons sunning themselves on Nerja’s beaches.

Nerja has very fine weather with over three hundred days of sunshine, no summer rainfall owing to the Mediterranean climate and very mild winters ideal for sunbathing.

You can also see exactly how Nerja looks right now on our webcam page .

Nerja has no less than ten beaches on which to spend a summer holiday of which two have maintained their blue flag status over the last few years which are the Playa Burriana and the Playa Torrecilla. Nerja is a great place to come on vacation in upmarket surroundings far away from the image of mass tourism which is synonymous with much of the Costa del Sol.

Moving to Nerja

If you are thinking of moving to Nerja , then you must read our expat interview with Terry Tweedy of Villasol Real Estate below:

Terry, what would you say would be the advantages to living in Nerja compared to other Costa del Sol towns?

Nerja has sometimes been called the jewel of the Costa del Sol, as it still retains the friendly Spanish village atmosphere as there are no high rise buildings allowed.

What proportion of the local population are Spanish?

The local population are predominantly Spanish with several nationalities having a sizeable presence including people from the UK and Ireland, Germany and Sweden.

Would the area not suit certain types of people, i.e. are there any possible downsides?

Although there is an abundance of bars and restaurants in the area and a designated night spot area in Plaza Tutti Frutti, it would probably not suit the jet set type of person as there are no up market expensive night clubs in the town, and there are no big chain fast food outlets allowed.

What are your favourite things to do in the area?

There are various clubs and associations in the area catering for all types of hobbies and interests from Petanque, to amateur dramatics, to photography, to bridge clubs and of course there are two 18 hole golf clubs within a 20 minute drive, and in the winter time there is skiing in the Sierra Nevada’s and then of course there are several beaches to relax and swim. And of course if you wish to socialise there are many Spanish tapas bars offering a superb range of delicacies.

Are there many facilities such as doctors and dentists, shops etc?

The area is well catered for with regards to medical assistance, as there is a medical centre which is manned 24/7 plus many private doctors and dentists. The area boasts several large supermarkets and many shops supplying everything you would expect in a thriving town.

Are there smaller villages nearby that you might also recommend?

Within a 20km radius there are many white villages to visit like Frigiliana which has won several awards for its appearance and character and many other white villages set in the hills.

What are the nearest international schools and how good are they?

There are several good Spanish schools in the town together with two private International schools, one in Almuñécar and the other in Malaga both with their own coach service for the pupils.

Is crime an issue for expats?

In my years of living in Nerja and surrounding area it has got a good reputation with regards to crime, mainly with opportunist thieves and petty theft. I do not recall any gun crime.

Coming onto buying property, what is the market like now in terms of prices going up, or down or staying the same?

With regards to property purchase, there has been a steady increase in value over the last 12 months albeit a moderate one. Confidence has returned to the market, and well presented properties in the range between 85000 Euros and 400.000 Euros are selling quite well. But above this threshold the market is still quite slow.

Is this a good time to buy and are there any repossessions or very cheap properties still available to buy?

A lot of British clients are concerned at this time because of the UK’s pending departure from the European Union. With regard to repossessions this part of the Costa del Sol was not so badly affected by the recession and very few properties have come on the market as a result.

What urbanisations are there and can you describe each one and how they might differ from each other?

There are many urbanisations around the town with the majority being well kept and maintained.

Any tips and advice to people looking to buy in Nerja or surrounding area?

When buying, it is necessary to check the fees before making a decision, because the urbanisation fees can vary from urbanisation to urbanisation considerably. And one of the most important things to bear in mind is to get a good and trusted Spanish lawyer to act on your behalf who also is fluent in your own language to guide you through the legal maze of buying a property here in Spain. Property prices are in line with most other coastal towns on the Costa’s, with Nerja being a little more expensive than Torrox or Frigiliana , with prices decreasing the farther one goes from the coast.

Hi there, we love Nerja and like to explore all the nooks and crannies. One of things we always loved to do was to take the walk along the cliff edge from playa Calahonda near the Balcon de Europa to Burriana beach but it closed many years back. But i recently heard that would re-open in 2015 – lest hope so!!! As a practical tip anyone looking for a relaible transport company from Malaga to Nerja take a look at https://nerjataxis.net/ – always reliable and have hundreds of good reviews.

Hi think the whole web site is brilliant all of the pages spot on.My “little gripe” was after 3 mails to Nerja Tourist Office no reply, as regular visitors to Nerja we have always had good advice from them very helpful. However that does not detract form your first class site. Frank Mitchell

Best things to do in Nerja Spain

Kayaking and paddleboarding.

One of the top activities in Nerja is to go paddleboarding or kayaking along the mesmerizing cliffs of Maro. Going paddleboarding and kayaking in Nerja is one of my absolute favorite things to do in Costa del Sol during the summer months.

Paddling in the crystal-clear water, going for dips in little coves, exploring secluded beaches, and witnessing freshwater waterfalls cascading directly into the turquoise sea is such an incredible experience that never grows old.

You can rent kayaks on Burriana Beach or book a guided kayak tour in advance if you prefer going with a group and the safety of a guide.

things to do in Nerja

Nerja Caves

Among the top Nerja attractions, you find Nerja Caves . The pre-historic cave system covers 3 galleries and is home to around 600 rock paintings. However, only one gallery is open to the public and can be visited on a 45-minute long self-guided tour .

Nerja Caves are home to the largest stalactite in the world stretching 32 meters high and with a base diameter of 13×7 meters. It is one of the most impressive caves in Caves in Andalucia and should not be missed on a trip to Nerja.

Make sure you book your tickets in advance so that you avoid long waiting times or even worst, that all entries are sold out. There is a nice restaurant and bar in front of the entrance with great sea views where you can enjoy a drink before or after the tour.

Opening hours in summer: 09:30 – 18:00 Opening times in winter: 09:30 – 15:30

Nerja sightseeing

Enjoy the views from Balcón de Europa

Balcón de Europa is a large viewpoint set on an outcrop on the cliffs of the old town and one of the most popular attractions in Nerja. What to see from the big outlook will blow you away. The entire coast stretches along the deep blue and turquoise sea below the majestic peaks of the Axarqía mountains.

You also get a good peek at the below beaches. At the viewpoint, there are some old canons giving away that it was once a Moorish fortification there protecting the town from pirates coming from the sea. The location is perfect as it is basically jutting out into the sea with sweeping 180 degree-views.

If you want to enjoy the views for a while, make sure you grab an ice cream at one of the ice cream shops nearby.

Nerja what to see - Balcón de Europa

Stroll around Nerja Old Town

Nerja Old Town is super charming with narrow streets, potplants, shops, and restaurants. You will also find pretty viewpoints hidden in narrow alleys.

There are plenty of places to stop for ice cream or a coffee and people watch. Nerja Old Town is full of life all year round which is one of the reasons I love it so much. Other beach towns in Andalucia , like La Herradura and Las Negras , nearly turn into ghost towns in the winter.

However, Nerja’s heart is always pumping with locals, expats, and tourists alike.

holidays Nerja

Hike Rio Chillar

If you wonder what to do in Nerja on a hot day, head to Rio Chillar . This is a lovely summer hike where you will be walking in the river most of the time, so make sure you wear good river hiking shoes .

The river talked you through narrow ravines, along waterfalls, and waterholes, so make sure you wear your swimwear. This is a hike to get wet on and is fun for the whole family.

While the entire hike is a 16-kilometer hike there and back with some light rock scrambling at the end, you can turn around whenever you want, so even younger children will enjoy this.

That said, I do recommend walking at least through the first ravine, as it is the most picturesque part of the trail.

Go on a boat trip

There are plenty of fun boat trips in Nerja taking you along the splendid cliffs of Maro, uncovering secluded beaches and coves, dolphin watching, or snorkeling.

This is without a doubt one of the top things to do in Nerja, Malaga on a sunny day. I can’t think of a better way to spend any Nerja holidays than on the sea.

I highly recommend this boat tour as it includes swimming and snorkeling stops. Besides, Nerja and Maro is the place in Andalucia where I have seen the most dolphins even from the beach, so there are chances to see these beautiful creatures too if you look out for them.

Relax at the beaches

Nerja is spoiled with beaches and you can easily go to a new beach every day during your vacation. From secluded beaches with no facilities like La Caleta de Maro to busy beaches with water sports, lifeguards, and full accessibility like Burriana Beach .

From the old town, you can walk directly onto some of the prettiest beaches in Nerja like Calahonda Beach and El Salón Beach which have sunbeds for rent and lifeguards on duty in the high season.

Nerja things to do

Nerja is a wonderful destination to go snorkeling. In fact, some of the most beautiful things to see in Nerja are underwater.

One of the best places to go snorkeling in Nerja is from Burriana Beach towards Maro. You can buy your own snorkeling gear at one of the beach shops by the beach or go on a snorkeling trip by boat (which I highly recommend doing!)

On a snorkeling tour, you get the thrill of the boat ride as well as a guide that can show you the best spots and take pictures of you underwater for unforgettable memories.

Go Canyoning in Rio Verde

Canyoning in Rio Verde (Otívar) is an amazing experience and among the most adventurous things to do. Nerja is only an hour away from one of the most impressive rivers in the region making this one of the best day trips from Nerja .

With ravines, waterfalls, and refreshing water holes, you will hike up the river and adventure down by rappelling down waterfalls and jumping from cliffs.

I can’t think of anything more fun than that. And I’ll say it again, Rio Verde in Otívar is one of the prettiest places I’ve been in Andalucia.

There are tours directly from Nerja taking you there and back with licensed instructors and all safety gear. Best of all, they will take pictures of you on your adventure! But make sure to book in advance as these tours are very popular.

Nerja Spain things to do - Rio Verde canyoning

Go shopping

There is plenty of shopping opportunities in Nerja. Particularly Nerja Old Town is jam-packed with unique boutique stores and different niche shops selling clothes, ceramics, and handicrafts.

There is also a street market on Tuesdays and Sundays at Urbanización Flamingo where you can find bargains on items like clothes and antiques.

If you prefer shopping malls, there are non in Nerja, so you would have to go to Torre del Mar for El Ingenio Shopping Center.

things to do Nerja Spain

Step inside El Salvador Church

Right by Balcón de Europa, you find the imposing 17th-century El Salvador Church. It was built on the site of a church from the early 1500s and is said to be the only church that represents all three archangels.

However, San Miguel is the most prominent as Nerja’s patron saint. The whitewashed church is located on the square so that you are likely to pass it several times during your Nerja visit.

A visit to El Salvador Church is without a doubt one of Nerja’s things to do that you cannot miss.

things to do Nerja

Hike Pico del Cielo

One of the best hikes from Nerja is to Pico del Cielo overlooking the splendid coast of Nerja. It starts right behind Nerja Caves and takes you through trees and open landscapes with sweeping views the whole way.

It is a medium-difficulty hike until you reach the last couple of kilometers. There, I would say it is very difficult and many hikers stop by the viewpoint below the peak.

But if you are brave enough to climb up the steep hill of sliding gravel, you are up for some of the most impressive 360 views on Costa del Sol.

The hike takes about 6-7 hours and covers about 20 kilometers there and back. Note that this is a winter activity, do not try to take on this hike in the summer, it is way too hot, and no natural water sources.

things to do in Nerja Spain - Pico el Cielo

Visit Frigiliana village

Frigiliana is one of the most charming white villages in Andalucia, overlooking the coast from its steep streets and viewpoints.

Among the best things to do in Frigiliana , is to walk the narrow, cobbled streets between whitewashed houses, colorful potplants, and vibrant cafés and boutique stores.

It is a classic Andalusian white village and one of the prettiest white villages near Malaga , so it is truly worth the visit. There are also a few lovely hiking routes to take from the village. If that sounds tempting, make sure to bring your hiking shoes.

holidays to Nerja and Frigiliana

Hike Rio Higueron

Rio Higueron river walk starts in Frigiliana village and takes you 13 kilometers through the river, along water holes, and waterfalls, and back.

It is a wonderful hike in the summer to cool down, but it can be done all year round as you don’t have to walk inside the water as you do in Rio Chillar. This is also a lesser popular route which means it is not as crowded.

My favorite part of this hike is towards the end where you climb the rocks to some waterfalls. Get ready for a fantastic day in nature!

Head to Mirador de La Torrecilla

Mirador de La Torrecilla is located between Torrecilla Beach and El Chucho Beach. It is a lovely walk there either from Balcón de Europa or from Playazo Beach .

The viewpoint that juts out in the sea offers tranquility and splendid coastal views in both directions.

Nerja holidays

Take a picture of Aqueduct of El Águila

On the road between Nerja and Maro, in the direction of Nerja Caves, you will pass the majestic late 19th-century Aqueduct of El Águila. There is a small pocket where you can stop the car to take a picture.

It is referred to as a “historic jewel of Spanish architecture” and was originally built to transport water from Nerja to the sugar refinery in Maro. While the factory is no longer in business, the aqueduct is still in use.

It was damaged during the civil war, but restored in 2011 and is now declared a Site of Special Cultural Interest in Andalucia.

Nerja attractions

Visit Nerja Museum

Visiting Nerja Museum is one of the most interesting things to do in Nerja. There, you will learn more about the history and culture of Nerja and the Axarquía region from prehistoric times until today, and most importantly the discovery of Nerja Caves.

I especially enjoy the archaeological section (yes, I wanted to be an archaeologist when I was a kid!) where you can see old artifacts found in the caves including the skeleton of a cavewoman.

Enjoy the views from Mirador Balcón de Carabeo

Taking in the views from Mirador Balcón de Carabeo is among the best things to do during your Nerja sightseeing. The viewpoint is located west of the large public parking and adorned with palm trees and colorful Rhododendron and dotted with benches, it is a relaxing place to stop for a bit before continuing your exploration of the town.

You get the best views of Carabeo Beach and if you are lucky, you might even spot dolphins playing in the waters.

things to see in Nerja

Walk El Caminito del Rey

You have seen everything in Nerja, what to do next? Take a day trip to walk the spectacular Caminito del Rey hike by El Chorro Lakes .

The thrilling walking path is pinned 100 meters high on the vertical canyon wall in breathtaking surroundings. It is a one-way hike with a shuttle bus taking you the opposite way.

You can drive there yourself, park at El Kiosko restaurant and walk to the ticket boot (you must purchase tickets in advance!) at your allocated entry time, or go on a guided tour from Nerja, which is the most convenient way to get there without a car.

I recommend booking your tickets as soon as possible as they sell out quickly. You can get entry tickets here or book a guided tour here .

Nerja what to do - El Caminito del Rey

Head to Mirador de Chanquete

Another viewpoint that is nice to visit is the Mirador de Chanquete, right between El Salón Beach and La Caletilla Beach.

Besides the views that are breathtaking, I love the statue of a fisherman standing proudly overlooking the sea. You can get straight onto it from Nerja Old Town or you can reach it by walking the coastal walk from Balcón de Europa.

best things to do in Nerja

Go for a stroll in Maro

Maro is one of the most charming little villages right next to Nerja. Things to do aren’t exactly many – besides the beaches! But it is a lovely little place to walk around.

There are a few restaurants and bars where you can grab lunch or a drink before heading back to Nerja. If you want to see the beaches, you can walk down to both Caleta de Maro and Maro Beach .

things to do in Nerja Malaga

Best time to go to Nerja

Nerja is a wonderful destination all year round but especially comes to life in the summer months. If you fancy going on a Nerka kayak tour or snorkeling excursion, your best bet is to go during the summer months. This is also the best time to go to the beach, though early and late summer are less crowded.

However, if you want to go hiking in the mountains and visit the caves, winter in Nerja is fabulous. But you can go at any time between mid-September and May.

From late September and throughout March, there are bigger chances of rain, but especially the winter in Andalucia sees heavy rainfall between warm, sunny days.

There are also summer hikes like Rio Chillar and Rio Higueron that are best to do in hot weather as the water gets cold in winter.

Temperatures in the summer are normally around 28 degrees Celsius in the daytime and in winter it might go down to 15. At nighttime, you can usually expect a temperature drop of around 10 degrees. Yet, there can be 20-degree days in winter and 30+-degree days in summer.

We are interested in your thoughts for 3 nights in Nerja, and other surrounding areas. Such as , how to book a waterfall kayak tour ? Where to stay close /on the beach. Which beaches are best? Not interested in jet skis , more quiet beaches with facilities. October 20-23, 2024. Thanks Paulina

Tuesday 19th of March 2024

For your upcoming trip to Nerja and its surrounding areas, you're in for a treat!

October is a lovely time to explore the region. To book a waterfall kayak tour, I recommend checking with local tour companies of GetYourGuide in Nerja or nearby areas like Maro. They often offer guided kayak tours to explore the stunning Maro-Cerro Gordo Natural Park and its waterfalls.

As for accommodations close to or on the beach, Nerja has plenty of options ranging from beachfront hotels to cozy guesthouses. Consider areas like Burriana Beach or Playa de la Calahonda for stays by the sea. For quieter beaches with facilities, you might enjoy Playa de la Herradura or Playa de Cantarriján, both known for their tranquil atmospheres and amenities.

Enjoy Nerja Your Way

Nerja is that place in Spain that you’ve never heard of, and for good reason too.

It’s a hidden gem which is yet to be overdeveloped or overpopulated with swathes of tourists, but there is no doubt it’s getting busier every year.

And when it’s busy, it’s busy! Negotiating those narrow cobbled streets in Nerja old town at peak times can sometimes feel like a small place in the heart of a big city, but it has a quiet charm which gives it a relaxed vibe whenever you choose to visit. Whatever type of Nerja holiday you want, we’ve got all the information you need to plan your visit.

During the day you can soak up the sun on one of 12 beaches or by the pool with your Sangria. Or if shopping and local sightseeing is your thing then there’s plenty of options here too. We like to round off the day at a bustling tapas bar, but you’ll find plenty of choice available from British pub grub to fine European cuisine. The choice really is yours.

Is Nerja a Good Holiday Destination?

I’m probably not the best person to ask as I’m completely biased and fell in love with Nerja after my first visit.

But you only have to check out reviews on TripAdvisor to see how popular Nerja really is.

There are so many things to do in Nerja and will keep anyone of any age entertained, but at the same time it has a distinct charm that is lacking elsewhere along the Costa del Sol.

If you want traditional nightlife that’s offered elsewhere along the coast, then there’s an area for that, as well as the usual outdoor terrace nightlife which line the streets of old town at night. But you shouldn’t expect to see the pavements awash with half-naked drunken Brits.

People definitely know how to party though, especially around Plaza Tutti Frutti!

But on the other side of the coin, Nerja has lots of options to keep couples, families and older visitors occupied throughout your stay.

So, what is there to do in Nerja?

If you just want to eat, drink and be merry in the sun, then Nerja’s Costa del Sol location will of course tick lots boxes. It is everything us English want in terms of Spanish destinations, so you will not be disappointed.

But Nerja is so much more than that.

There’s a range of sights to visit if you want to add a splash of culture and there’s also ample opportunity to get the blood pumping through a range of other activities such as parasailing and scuba diving.

Below are some of the most popular things to do and visit in Nerja

Balcón de Europa

Take a stroll down to the end of the promenade (Paseo Balcón de Europa) and you’ll find yourself with one of the most breath taking views the Costa del Sol has to offer. Standing on this cliff edge gives you the perfect view up and down Nerja’s coastline to the east and west, and lots of blue sea and sky right ahead.

Some people believe they have found Africa almost 100 miles away across the blue water, but I think that probably shows how many pints they’d consumed before they turned in to a would-be Greco-Roman geographer.

At night, the ‘Balcony of Europe’ is one of the highlights of any trip to Nerja. Grab yourself an ice-cream from any of the nearby outlets and enjoy. Thank me later.

Church of El Salvador

Located in the heart of Nerja close to the Paseo Balcón de Europa, you cannot miss the white-washed Iglesia El Salvador.

Originally built in 1505, it was reconstructed at the end of the 17th century with further modifications during the period of 1776–1792.

You don’t have to be religious to appreciate it’s beauty and it’s well worth a look inside to view it’s captivating architecture and artefacts.

Burriana Beach

Let’s start with the obvious. This is one of the most beautiful beaches on the Costa del Sol, never mind Nerja.

Not only that, but the promenade is packed with bars, restaurants and shops to ensure you have everything you need for the day.

Located on the eastern side of Nerja, away from the centre, Burriana beach itself has ample facilities including showers and childrens play areas, beach volleyball nets as well as sunbeds and shade for rent as far as the eye can see. You can even get massages if you want!

During peak season you can hire jet-skis, pedalos, inflatables and kayaks, or take your breath away with a bit of parasailing and enjoy the views across Nerja and the blue water beneath you.

Cuevas de Nerja (Nerja Caves)

The Cuevas de Nerja is an attraction that every visitor should explore.

This 5km stretch of caves will captivate people of all ages and is the home of the largest stalagmite not just on the Costa del Sol, but the WORLD. For the record, it’s 32m high with a 13m by 7m base.

You can explore the caves on your own or take a guided tour if you would like more information during your trip.

Is Nerja Safe?

Nerja is as safe as any other town of its kind. Levels of crime are extremely low, but where there are tourists, there are opportunists.

During Nerja’s peak season, you should be vigilant and bear in mind that pickpockets and thieves operate in the area, as well as the beaches.

However, it’s very rare to find yourself concerned for your safety walking around Nerja at any time of the day or night.

Is Nerja worth visiting?

Nerja is perfect for a week, even better for two I think. It’s one of those places that has enough to keep you busy and more importantly, happy.

So if it’s good for fourteen days, then it’s perfect for just a few.

It’s close enough to get to from a city like Malaga or Granada and spend the day visiting, but with so much to do, it’d be a shame not to spend a few beautiful days and nights before heading back to a bustling city.

Staying in Nerja

There are three main types of accommodation in Nerja. Self-catering villas, apartments and hotels. Where you choose to stay all depends the type of break you want.

You might want to be right in the heart of things in the town centre with a terrace balcony to soak up Nerja town atmosphere, or perhaps you want something less hectic a mere 20 min walk away ( see El Capistrano Village here ) or be near Burriana beach so you can soak up the glorious Mediterranean sun for hours on end.

But wherever you stay, you are only ever a short walk or taxi ride away from what you want, whether it’s peace and quiet or some exciting nightlife.

Where in Spain is Nerja?

Nerja is 56km east of the centre of Malaga on the Costa del Sol and is well connected by public transport. Nerja is set in the Andalusia region of southern Spain and is nestled on the coast at the foothills of the Sierra Almijara mountain range. This provides stunning scenic views for miles around whichever direction you are looking in.

What airport do you fly to for Nerja?

The closest airport to Nerja is Málaga Costa Del Sol airport and is the fourth busiest in Spain.

It’s served by all of the major airlines operating out of the UK and Ireland including Aer Lingus, British Airways, easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair and TUI Airways. So there are plenty of available to get here from your regional airport.

The next closest airport is in the city of Granada about 70 miles away.

How do I get from Málaga to Nerja?

From the airport you can reach Nerja by hopping on a bus or getting a taxi transfer. It’s advisable to book a Nerja taxi for a return journey before you fly out. This will save you a good few Euros instead of paying a metered taxi. Alternatively, your accommodation may organise transfers for you.

You can also reach Nerja from Malaga by train and bus, but just make sure you do your research first.

Summary Guide of Nerja

With over 250 bars and restaurants, 12 beaches and around 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s easy to see the appeal of a vacation in Nerja. But it’s not all just about sun, sea and sangria!

There’s designer shops, the famous Nerja Caves, the breath-taking Balcon de Europa, as well as the historic Church of El Salvador to appease culture vultures. And it’s easy to take the Sierra Almijara mountain range for granted too. Peak season is mid-June to August, but Nerja is perfect any time of year.

12 Best Things to Do in Nerja, Spain

With all of the wonderful things to do in Nerja, you’ll no doubt be extending your stay in this little slice of Spanish paradise.

Backed by the Sierra Almijara, Nerja has maintained its resident charm even with the perpetual creep of tourism. Nerja’s historic center remains just that, a low-rise look into a delightful past. Most importantly, it’s devoid of major modern developments.

In this sense, Nerja is quickly immersive, drawing you in with its views from the Balcony of Europe and the sight of the cobalt-blue Mediterranean. Exploring the Old Town reveals older tales, delicious tapas and a social atmosphere.

Beyond, the town’s beautiful humanity makes way for a craggy coastline of epic cliffs that reveals cozy alcoves. While the rising mountains have become a home for vast caverns.

How to Get to Nerja

If you’re planning to fly into Nerja from around Spain or an international departure point, you will need to fly to Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport . Once you’ve collected your bags, you’ll have several options to choose from.

Trains and buses depart from the airport’s Terminal 3. There is an underground train station along with a bus stop. Things to Do in Nerja

These are some of the absolute best things to do in Nerja. Whether you prefer to relax on the beach or you want to hit the trails in search of adventure, there is a little something for everyone in this little slice of Andalusian paradise.

1. See the Balcony of Europe

There is no better introduction to Nerja than by standing on the Balcony of Europe . You’ll catch your first glimpse of the Balcon de Europa as you wander down a scenic, palm-fringed street. The sea breeze and views add a sense of vibrancy, something only enhanced by the street musicians, artists, and bustling cafes.

Throughout the day, and especially at sunset, you’ll find plenty of atmosphere and travelers looking to take in the epic views. It’s no surprise why once you stand on the balcony that hovers over the cliff’s edge.

The glistening Mediterranean spreads out before you and on either side, a beautiful, craggy coast expands like wings. Our tip? Skip the crowds and welcome the day here at sunrise.

2. Explore the Old Town

Once you’ve taken in the rising sun, take a few steps back and begin your explorations of Nerja’s Old Town. With ample ice cream joints and cafes, you can load up on some treats as you explore the many narrow alleys that harbor some of Nerja’s best views.

You’ll be happy to know that while Nerja might be popular for travelers, it hasn’t lost its sense of self.

The Old Town is the best place to experience Nerja’s Andalusian culture and architecture, with many whitewashed buildings holding pots of bougainvillea.

One of our favorite parts of the Old Town is the narrow, colorful street of Calle Tajillo. The passage lies beyond the sightly El Salvador Church and is laden with flowers, across wrought iron windows and along the cobblestones themselves. At the end lies a marvelous view overlooking the coast.

Enjoy the views from the Balcony of Europe, a viewpoint with some of the most stunning views in the region.

3. Venture into Cueva de Nerja

Culture and the sights are just part of the Nerja experience. In many ways, the town is a gateway to some of the best outdoor adventures along the Andalusian coast. The pinnacle of this is the Cueva de Nerja .

The impressive network of caves is covered from top to bottom in stalagmites and stalactites. The eerie, subterranean sensations immediately take hold as you explore caverns whose history can be traced beyond the Bronze Age and into prehistoric times.

The Nerja Caves run for some 5 kilometers (3 miles) underground. While you won’t go that far, it doesn’t take long to truly appreciate the size and scale of the caves. Vast karst chambers feel like Renaissance cathedrals with one home to a 32m (104ft) column, one of the largest of its kind on earth!

4. Laze on the sands of Burriana Beach

A big day in the caves calls for relaxation and rejuvenation. You can find just that on the welcoming sands of Burriana Beach . In a region of great beaches , Playa de Burriana stands out with its size, accessibility, and fun atmosphere.

In the summer, this is the place to swim. Under the heat of the Spanish sun, you can rest easy knowing lifeguards are looking on. Beyond that, kayaks, SUPs, and snorkeling gear allow you to explore further.

On the other side of the 800m beach, you’ll find a bustling promenade with all you need to keep your beach day rolling. Stop by Ayo Restaurant for some of Nerja’s best paella, cooked fresh over a wood fire.

Exploring the beaches, particularly Burriana, is definitely one of the best things to do in Nerja!

5. Hike the Rio Chillar

We love a little balance during our travels, so it’s time to take a hike. The Rio Chillar promises to be quite different from your regular hikes. After all, you’ll be trading mountains for, yep, a river.

Best hiked during the summer months, the Rio Chillar will rise to around knee height. That makes aquatic hiking shoes like these your best option.

As you meander through the rolling river among the Sierras de Tejeda, you’ll venture into narrow ravines, past beautiful waterfalls and neighboring swim holes.

The entire journey is 8km (5 miles) each way. The great thing is, you can turn around whenever you like. Just make sure to get to at least the first ravine. It gives you a fulfilling experience while also being the most picturesque section.

6. Have a Night Out

As the sun goes down, Nerja slows to a stop. With eyes facing west, taking in the candy skies, we all stop for a few moments of quiet. But afterward, some go to their hotels and others want to continue the night. If you’re the latter, it’s time for a night out.

At the center of Nerja’s evening adventure lies the Tutti Frutti Plaza . As the name suggests, this is a colorful and fun place to be after dark.

Dim-lit cocktail bars bring in the conversationalists toasting to a day of sunbathing, kayaking, or cave exploring. Later, the clubs welcome those who simply want to dance into the early hours. The party here often rolls on until 4 am, so you’ll certainly get your fix.

7. Walk the Rainbow Steps

Hungover or not, it’s high time for our next adventure. Not far from the Balcony of Europe, along the promenade, the Rainbow Steps are one of the best spots for photography in Nerja.

Forget beach views and the Med for a second. These steps are utterly Instagrammable . The kaleidoscopic steps will soon find themselves at the heart of your Nerja photo album, with the swaying palms making for a delightful backdrop.

Afterward, swing by La Dorada . This is a lifesize replica of the boat at the center of the beloved Spanish show, Blue Summer. And, of course, another sweet photo opp.

Wandering the waterfront around Nerja is perfect on a sunny day.

8. Rent a SUP or Kayak

Sculpted by the timeless artistry of the Mediterranean Sea, the Nerja Coast is an utter delight to explore. The cliffs, at all times rugged, impressive, and beautiful, boast neatly hidden beaches, sea caves, and coves.

Yes, you can sign up for a tour (we mention one below), but sometimes you just want to do things on your terms. From Burriana Beach, you can head to one of several kiosks along the way and rent a SUP or kayak for the day. From there, you can set out on your own journey.

With all the time in the world, bounce between the sand and sea as you discover all the coast has to offer. You can refresh yourself in the Med or under freshwater waterfalls whenever you get too hot.

Get a SUP or Kayak and really get to know the Nerja coast.

9. Visit the Aqueduct Eagle

Set between Nerja and nearby Maro, is the captivating 19th-century Aqueduct Eagle. Along the road (which also takes you to the Nerja Caves) there is an area from which you can admire the aqueduct in all its stunning beauty.

The four-level aquaduct is an Andalusian gem and once transported water from Nerja to one of Maro’s sugar refineries. That era has come and gone, although water still crosses to this day.

From the viewpoint, the enormous construction adds a human element to an otherwise eye-catching valley. Speaking of, there are some pathways beyond the viewpoint into the basin from which you can enjoy a unique perspective of the towering columns and arches.

10. Take a trip to Frigiliana

Just a half hour from Nerja, Frigiliana is an easy day trip. The town lies in the foothills of the Almijara mountains with its old streets harboring ties back to Moorish times.

Quaint, charming, and captivating, Frigiliana is one of Andalusia’s best examples of whitewashed architecture. Mixed in with the mountains beyond, they make for some amazing photos.

Importantly, Frigiliana is a place that remains closely tied to its heritage. That includes the cuisine and the arts. This is best exemplified by Barribarto, where great eye-catching alleys feature artisanal shops and homegrown eats. As it’s quite a hilly town, you can also expect a view.

If you don’t have a car, you can take the bus that departs each hour for around €1.20.

Frigiliana is a fantastic day trip from Nerja and another stunning place to explore in southern Spain.

11. Explore the Cliffs of Maro-Cerro

Maybe you didn’t want to paddle by yourself, or maybe you just want to go back a second time. Either way, visitors must explore the implausible magnificence of the Cliffs of Maro-Cerro.

On this guided kayak tour , you’ll see the best of this coastline from the turquoise surface of the Mediterranean Sea. As you paddle past towering cliffs, your guide will help you discover some huddle gems.

Not only will you uncover some hidden beaches, but you will revel in the sheer size of the cliffs. You’ll also spot a 16th-century watch tower. Other stops along the journey include the chance to pop on some snorkel gear and discover the treasures below.

12. Summit El Cielo

First, you waded through a river. Then you sat at the base of the imposing cliffs surrounding Nerja’s coastline.

Now, to finish up your Nerja experience, let’s embark on a more traditional hike. El Cielo stands at over 1,500 meters and is the biggest peak in this corner of Spain.

Beginning near the Nerja Caves, the trek up El Cielo is not a simple stroll. The entire round-trip journey is roughly 20km (12 miles) and takes you to the ceiling of the Andalusian Coast where you can see much of the Costa del Sol.

For the most part, the hike is of medium difficulty. Around the 8km (5 mi) mark, the trail does become more steep. This is a common turnaround point for many, as there is a nice viewpoint. But if you’re up for it, 360-degree views await at the top.

15 Best Things to Do in Nerja (Spain)

Nerja is a family resort on the far eastern edge of the Costa del Sol. In this rocky and less touristy part of the region skyscrapers are replaced by low-rise apartments and discreet hotels.

Yet there’s no lack of things for families to get up to: You can explore natural or man-made landmarks, laze on a plethora of beaches, take part in all kinds of water sports, play a round of golf or have fun at a water park.

Nerja is also bordered by  two large natural parks, allowing you to venture into the wilderness right from the edge of the resort, in a way that isn’t possible at the Costa del Sol’s more built-up destinations.

Let’s have a look at the best things to do in Nerja :

1. Playa de Burriana

Playa de Burriana

If you’re in Nerja for a beach holiday this is the place you’ll return to time and again.

Playa de Burriana is the largest and best-equipped beach in the resort, with a long and wide strip of pale sand.

In the summer there are floating slides in the water for kids, and lifeguards are on patrol from April to late-September.

Behind the beach is a paved promenade with a long line of chiringuitos (Spanish beach bars), and further back on Camino de Burriana is a very international assortment of bars and eateries.

2. Nerja Caves

Nerja Caves

This cave system had been used by Neanderthals and early civilisations up to the Bronze Age.

But it lay unseen by modern eyes until 1959 when a group of friends stumbled upon it while out catching bats.

After entering you can study display cases showing some of the items and human remains that were in the caves when they were rediscovered.

On a tour you’ll step through a sequence of chambers, coming to the magnificent Sala del Cataclismo, which is 100 metres long and reaches heights of more than 30 metres.

The humungous central column is 32 metres high and officially the largest in the world.

3. Balcón de Europa

Balcón de Europa

This seafront veranda at the top of a headland is a big part of local life in Nerja.

It got its name in 1885 when King Alfonso XII visited this spot following an earthquake and remarked that it was the “balcony of Europe”. When you contemplate the sea from the iron railings it’s hard to disagree.

There’s a statue of King Alfonso here, as well as a sculpture on the plaza behind commemorating the discovery of Nerja’s caves.

Everyone gathers at the plaza for New Year’s Eve, during the Holy Week processions and the Feria de Nerja which takes place in mid-October.

4. Río Chillar

Río Chillar

Drop in at the tourist office in Nerja for details of this hike that starts in the northern outskirts of the resort and trails into the natural park.

You’ll journey against the course of the Chillar River as it winds through a gorge and cascades into a perfectly clear pool.

The walk is suitable for most ages and takes around three hours.

It’s also a year-round activity, particularly satisfying in the summer as the water and shade created by the gorge will cool you off.

If you go quietly you should get to see Ibexes balancing on the ravine walls, as well as lizards and snakes sunning themselves on the rocks.

5. Playa el Salon

Playa el Salon

This beach has the dual appeal of being right in the middle of Nerja while not attracting as many visitors as Torrecilla and Burriana.

This is partly down to its setting, at the foot of the cliffs to the west of the Balcón de Europa.

You have to make your way down to the seafront via a steep winding lane, and there are no beachside restaurants here.

That shouldn’t matter though as the resort’s busy centre is no more than a couple of minutes on foot, and there’s a kiosk on the beach in summer should you need anything.

El Salon also has slightly finer sand than Nerja’s other beaches and like its neighbours also provides sun loungers.

6. Church of El Salvador

Church of El Salvador

The historic landmark in the pedestrianised area behind the Balcón de Europa, this whitewashed church was built at the end of the 17th century and has a baroque and Mudéjar (Moorish-style) design.

The bell-tower beside it is a little newer and was completed in 1724, rising above Nerja’s skyline.

You’ll get to know the peals of its bells, which ring on the hour and half-hour, and competing with the tower is a huge Norfolk Island pine tree, brought from the Americas in the early-1900s.

If you visit during a mass you’ll know you’re on the Costa del Sol, as services are held in both Spanish and English!

7. Aqueduct of El Águila

Aqueduct of El Águila

Not so much a “thing to do” as a “thing to see” from a distance, this 19th-century civic work merits a photo all the same.

It was built to carry water to the mills of a disused sugar refinery in Maro and traverses the precipitous Barranco de la Coladilla, a ravine not too far from the Nerja Caves.

Although the sugar mills are gone, the aqueduct is still used for irrigation.

There are four storeys of overlapping arches, number 37 in total, all with a Moorish-style horseshoe shape.

8. Playa de la Cala el Cañuelo

Playa de la Cala el Cañuelo

Around 10 kilometres east of Nerja there’s a peaceful little cove with a shale beach.

Not too many people make it this far outside the resort, and what adds to the sense of seclusion is the ban on cars in the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro  Gordo Natural Park; you have to park up by the road and catch a minibus down the shore.

There you can unwind in front of rocky, pine-dappled hills or take a dip in the serene waters, which offer some of the best snorkelling.

In summer you can visit the chiringuito for lunch, but on busier days you may need to book a table early.

9. Water Sports

Diving in Nerja

The natural park east of Nerja has undeveloped cliff-tops and little coves, all of which are best admired from the sea.

You can rent a kayak by the hour from the beachfront at Burriana or Maro and see what you can find.

Playa de Burriana also has its own PADI five star dive centre, with courses and dives for all levels.

If you feel you’re not quite ready to take the plunge you could also take part in one of the centre’s snorkelling excursions.

For people who want exhilarating motor-powered water sports Parasail Nerja offers jet-skiing, banana boat rides and of course, parasailing at €40 a go.

10. Aquavelis Water Park

Aquavelis Water Park

At Nerja you’ll be a brief drive from this water park in Torre del Mar, just the thing for children getting fidgety at the beach.

Parents can plonk themselves on the lawns beneath permanent sunshades for the afternoon while kids have the time of their lives on 21 different rides, including the 80-metre high-speed Kamikaze.

Littler visitors can splash about in the Zona Mini, with small slides and pools.

Elsewhere there’s a spacious wave pool and Aqua Splash, a large adventure climbing frame with slides and waterfalls.

Baviera Golf in Caleta de Velez

This sport is synonymous with the Costa del Sol, but on the eastern side of the region there are fewer courses. Still, in Nerja you’ll have two within half an hour.

Baviera Golf in Caleta de Velez is closest; it’s one of the more reasonably-priced on the Costa del Sol but also gets some of the best reviews.

It’s a very playable, 18-hole par 72 with a great bar and terrace at the 19th.

Closer to Málaga is Anoreta Golf, set one kilometre in from the coast but on raised ground with some astounding scenery to drink in as you tee off.

Like Baviera it was designed by former European Tour player José María Cañizares.

12. Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama

Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama

The natural park that forms the backdrop to Nerja is made up of three limestone mountain ranges.

Millions of years of weathering have lead to some incredible natural features, like the Nerja Caves and the Río Chillar canyon.

For people with a taste for the outdoors there’s much more to see, including loads more caves, many of which were hideouts for smugglers in the past . The best time to set off on hiking trips is outside the peak summer period when the sun is less punishing.

The park is woven with trails for circular or afternoon hikes, or you can get in touch with a local adventure sports company if you want to do something more ambitious like canyoning or rock-climbing.

13. Ron Montero

Ron Montero, Motril

In the Granada province, around half an hour east of Nerja is the town of Motril, where you’ll find the Ron Montero distillery, one of the very last rum-makers in Europe.

The plant is open from Tuesday to Saturday, with one English-language tour a day starting at 13:00. There’s a video presentation, and you’ll look around the barrel storage area all the while finding out about the ingredients (local sugar cane), distillation and storage process.

As you’d guess, the highlight is when you get to taste the three-year (in hot chocolate), five-year and 50-year rums, discovering the differences between them.

The distillery also hosts evening tasting events with tapas, and you can also buy bottles as a souvenir.

Málaga Cathedral

The Costa del Sol’s capital is just the place to visit to sample big city life in Andalusia, and has enough cultural and historical attractions to hold your attention for more than a day.

First things first, Pablo Picasso was born here, and there are two museums devoted to the seminal 20th-century artist.

There’s an epic Moorish monument, the Alcazaba, a fortress that was constructed in the 1000s and retains its palatial courtyards.

The walls of the Alcazaba link with another castle, Gibralfaro on a hill-top 130 metres above the city and with rousing views of Málaga and its port.

Down by the water you can stroll around Mulle 1 (Pier 1), where part of the port has become a swanky new shopping and dining district.

15. Food and Drink

Calamares

Another thing that distinguishes Nerja from many Costa del Sol resorts is the availability of Andalusian cuisine.

Obviously this includes tapas favourites like calamares and fried baby squid (chipirones). But you can also get dishes like ajoblanco, a cold soup made with almonds, bread and garlic, and often served with white grapes.

Another cold soup, Gazpacho also originates in this part of Spain, and is perfect on hot days.

Espetos are a real Málaga speciality: Sardines skewered with bamboo and barbecued over wood embers.

Surrounded by mountains and stunning beaches , the town has an ideal climate, with an average annual temperature of 20ºC. Agriculture, fishing and tourism are the main productive sectors. Although its history harks back as far as the Palaeolithic, the town owes its name and origin to Moors, i.e., “Narixa” in Arabic means “abundant spring”. The warm, extroverted nature of the locals, traditions such as Carnival, Holy Week, patron saint feast days and festivities, and the town’s proximity to major cities (Malaga, Granada, Seville), make Nerja an ideal place to learn our language and get to know our culture.

The Prehistoric Caves of Nerja and the small white-washed villages in the environs are worth visiting for their cultural interest and special charm.

Nerja will soon become your favorite place to spend your summer, a place that you will come back to year after year. You will come back because you will fall in love with the  amazing views  on offer and the  exceptional climate . Not to mention how friendly people are around here.

Things to do in Nerja with your family

So lets say that you have just arrived and you are looking for  things to do in Nerja  but you don’t know exactly what. Do you want prepare something for the whole family or maybe just with your partner or friends?

I propose you start off lightly and take a stroll through town because I’m sure you are still just getting used to it here. This way you can relax a little and you can clear your mind thanks to the amazing views and the white-washed streets. Don’t worry if the place where you are staying is slightly out of the town center because there is a 24 hour  Nerja Taxis  in town and all you have to do is call them on (+34) 952520537.

That said, if you are reading this guide from home and you still haven’t found a place to stay, here is a website with  hotels in Nerja.

Nerja Turismo - Que hacer en Nerja

After seeing this beautiful image of the  Balcón de Europa  I will give you a list of things to do in Nerja with your family. I’m going to help you discover the area in the best possible way.

Balcón de Europa

Visit the most emblematic place in Nerja, with the sea views looking towards Africa. Take a stroll through the Balcón of Europa and wave at the Mediterranean sea from this world-renowned balcony. The late king Alfonso XII looks over this place, a place where you can grab an ice cream and stroll through palm trees while watching all the street artists do their thing.

You will have the chance to buy a caricature of your family or watch acrobats juggle. There are plenty of different artists at the spot.

I recommend doing all of this at from about 18:30 onwards, at sundown.

A stroll through Calle Pintada

If you are still around the Balcón then you  should visit  one of the most important streets in Nerja (Calle Pintada) because it’s very close. There you will find all kinds of shops, from souvenirs with the  typical spanish  bull to more sofisticated clothes shops. The street is also very pintoresque and I recommend that you come here at least once. Splash out on clothes or just buy that souvenir you wanted to remind you of how perfect this holiday was.

Nerja Turismo - Que hacer en Nerja - Mercadillo de los Domingos

Market (Tuesday and Sunday)

The local is on every Tuesday and Sunday. On Tuesday you will find plenty of fresh produce, and new clothes at a very reasonable prices. If you prefer antiques or collecting then Sunday is the day to go. You will find all kinds of collectibles and also hand-made products. You will be able to find almost anything but not food.

Opposite the Market you can find a café called  Genesis , there you can have a cup of coffee or a beer and also a bite to eat.

The small “train”

You may have noticed there is a small “train” that goes through town, this train might be a good idea if you want to see the town at a good price. It departs from Plaza de los Cangrejos and includes an audio guide that will help you learn a bit more about our town and hopefully it will help you find out  things to do in Nerja .

Currently inactive

When the “train” arrives back at Plaza de los Cangrejos you should take a stroll through that square because the views there are also very good. It’s a great square by the sea with beautiful sea views next to Torrecilla beach.

If you’re visiting in the summer you will have plenty  more things to do in nerja  and on this square, you will see some trampolines. These are great for the kids and in the meantime, you can have a drink on the terrace of the many bars there.

Things to do in Nerja (Summertime)

So you are  visiting in the summer  but you don’t exactly know  what to do here in Nerja , but relax because there is a lot on offer. When the summer comes  Nerja  springs to life.  Burriana  beach is the place to be if you want to have some fun in the summer.

Now I’m going to tell you what you can do in  Nerja  in the summer.

Jet-Skiing.

At the end of  Burriana beach , opposite Ayo’s beach restaurant there is a jet-ski rental business. Here you can rent a jet-ski to have some fun whether it be with your family or your partner. You can speed past all the beaches in Nerja. The price is 35 euros per person and you can ride for 15 minutes. In these 15 minutes, you will feel alive thanks to the adrenaline caused by the speed of these jet-skis.

Banana Boat

Perfect for those who want to live the excitement of the jet-skis but can’t ride them. A speed boat will drag you along the sea and you will live moments of true chaos. It’s very very fun and you can enjoy this with your whole family and/or friends because the Banana Boat has a capacity of 6 people. Please keep in mind that it may not actually be banana shaped.

Paragliding

For those of you who wish to touch the sky. A speed boat will make you fly and from here you can see  Nerja  in a different perspective. A perspective that not everyone can have. Take note though, I don’t recommend this for the faint of heart.

Paddle boat

If you are looking for something a bit less exhilarating why not try the paddle boats? Here you can relax and enjoy the beautiful Mediterranean sea. You can rent a paddle boat at numerous beaches in Nerja. Torrecilla beach and  Burriana beach .

Deap sea diving

On  Burriana  beach, you can also book a deep sea diving excursion. The company who offer this service will take you offshore and take you to beautiful places where you will be able to see fish and other sea animals that may surprise you!  Click here to see the prices or book an excursion.

Things to do in Nerja? Well, you can relax that’s for sure

Nerja Turismo - Que hacer en Nerja - Tumbonas

Nerja sunbeds

For those of you who wish to bronze Nerja is perfect. In the summer almost every beach in Nerja has sunbed rentals at around 4€ per day. At Burriana beach you can find sunbed areas for every beach restaurant, so around 12 sunbed areas. Some of them have Balinese beds, these are the best for relaxing.

Nerja Turismo - Que hacer en Nerja - Excursion Rio Chillar

The  Río Chillar  walk

Is one of the  best things to do in Nerja . Perfect for families and kids. Situated in the natural park in the Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama mountain ranges. This walk is around 16km there and back but you don’t have to go all the way. It’s important you know that you will need comfortable and sporty shoes because of the rocks. Keep in mind that during certain times of the year, some areas of the walk may be under water.

Beach tennis paddles

Don’t forget this classic beach game! It’s good for the little ones and they can play just by the seashore. Great!

Non-aquatic sports

You can enjoy a game of tennis, with up to three friends, in La Raqueta tennis club which can be found opposite the Nerja Club hotel. There are 3 courts and the price is 12€ an hour (2€ extra after dark).

Paddle Tennis

If you prefer paddle tennis then you have 3 places to choose from:

  • La Raqueta tennis club also offers paddle tennis. They have two courts: one glass court and one court with walls. The price is 14€ an hour for the glass court and 12 for the other court. (2€ extra after dark).
  • The sports complex Enrique Lopez Cuenca offers four glass courts. The price is 9’50€ an hour (1’20€ extra after dark).
  • The Nerja Parador where they have two courts with walls. The price is 10€ an hour.

On Burriana beach, you can find three volleyball courts that are open all year round and the best part is that they are free! You can play with your friends or challenge those who are already playing.

Nerja has an athletics ground that can host 2000 spectators. There is an eight-lane track all backed up by the national athletics association.

If you like swimming and prefer the pool to the sea then go to the Enrique Lopez Cuenca sports complex where they have an indoor pool. This indoor pool has six lanes.

Where to go if you want to have a beverage?

So you have been  doing things  all day and you just want to go to a bar and have a drink, well you also have plenty of option of where to drink in Nerja. I’m going tell recommend some places but I hope you can help me out in the comments.

So maybe it’s a bit too early for the bars and you just want to have a coffee, or and ice cream or maybe even a mojito, why not. My favorite places for this are Tropisol on Burriana beach and Kronox which can be found at the Balcón de Europa.

The afternoon is getting a bit lively and you fancy a cocktail, I know the feeling. I recommend going to Rincón del Sol on Burriana beach or Cochran’s at the Balcón de Europa. Cochran’s usually have live music at the weekends. Prices and mad, the staff are friendly and the views are unbeatable.

If you are looking for dark beers and real ale then you can’t miss Irish Annie’s or Muphys bar. There’s a lot of Irish around in Nerja so there are a few Irish bars in town.

Late-night bars

If you are looking for nightlife then Tutti Frutti is your place. It’s a little square in the center of town surrounded by late-night bars with different kinds of music and atmospheres. My favorites are Obelix Plaza and La Guardia because they are always full of locals but if you are looking to mingle with tourists then Bar SE7EN is your best choice.

I hope my mini-guide of  things to do in Nerja  is helpful. I invite you to comment and help us out.

Top 5 Things To Do In Nerja, Spain

Beautiful views in Nerja, Spain

From visiting the caves to enjoying the beaches and the town’s restaurants, here are the best things to do in Nerja, Spain.

With its surprising sub-tropical climate, the beautiful coastal town of Nerja, Spain is home to miles of sandy beaches, top seafood, incredible ancient caves and what is proudly known as the Balcony of Europe!

Almost two years ago I went on a road trip around southern Spain visiting Madrid, Ronda and Seville . Fancying a bit of time at the Spanish seaside we decided upon Nerja. It looked pretty, had plenty of things to do and by all accounts, even in January would be reasonably warm. Tick!

While for me it didn’t have the Andalusian charm of the other cities, it did have a real Spanish seaside feel. You know, it felt fun! It had pretty beaches, great ice cream and nic-nacs galore. While there I was desperate to visit Nerja’s famous caves. Typically I arrived to find they’d just closed for the day.

So this time, not only was I keen to see some of what I’d seen before, I couldn’t wait to finally check out the caves. Interestingly, Nerja was placed firmly on the map in Spanish culture by the 80s TV series Verano Azul , which told the story of a group of kids on holiday in the town.

And what’s this? Our tour guide in Nerja was none other than Miguel Joven who played Tito in the series! Not only is he still a celebrity in the area (he was stopped numerous times by fans on our tour) but he’s also one of the most passionate guides I’ve met in a long time. Nerja means a lot to him, and he was keen to share some of that love with tourists visiting on holiday.

At around an hour’s drive, Nerja makes a great day trip from Malaga . You could also book a taxi to  get to  Nerja  from Malaga airport .

To make the most of your trip, I’d recommend spending a few days in Malaga , before heading to explore Ronda ,  Antequera and Nerja . If you don’t fancy organising a trip, take a look at tours of Nerja such as this one , which include transport and activities.

Plus, don’t forget to research where to stay in Nerja . There are some amazing hotels and accommodation options within easy reach of the centre.

Best Things To Do In Nerja

Visit the cuevas de nerja  – the caves of nerja.

One of the top things to do in Nerja, the caves are the 4 th most visited natural monument in Spain and receive over 3,500 people a day in high season. With 800,000 years of history, it’s fascinating to delve inside the ancient lair of stalagmites and stalactites. The caves of Nerja are absolutely huge inside (approx. 5km!) yet only around a third of the caves are accessible. For me, this was a highlight of my visit to southern Spain, and I never expected them to be quite so impressive and well-preserved. Miguel was a great guide, and I’d definitely recommend booking a private tour if you get the chance. You can contact him here .

Visit Nerja's caves - easily the best thing to do in Nerja!

Relax on one of Nerja’s beaches

There are 12 beaches within the region of Nerja, but the large sandy beach of Playa de Burriana is by far the most popular. For something extra special, head to Playa de Maro – often said to be one of Spain’s best beaches. If you hop in a kayak you can reach cliffs with beautiful waterfalls trickling down. Many people rave about the diving in this region too, as there are underwater caves and springs below ground!

A trip to the Playa de Burriana Beach - one of the top things to do in Nerja!

Take in the views on the Balcón de Europa

The Balcony of Europe is a spectacular viewing platform, and the perfect place take in Nerja’s dramatic rocky coastline. It was built on the site of an old fortress that was destroyed in 1812 during the War of Independence. I’d recommend picking up an ice cream from a gelataria in the town, then wandering along the palm-lined broadwalk to the large circular plaza. Nothing like a delicious ice cream to make a beautiful view even more picturesque!

Stop at the Acueducto del Águila

I found this bridge pretty much by chance on the way to Nerja’s caves. The Eagle Aquaduct, built in 1879, is a pretty spectacular sight, and well worth stopping for a quick photo.

Dine at one of the best restaurants in Nerja

Foodies rejoice – Nerja is home to around 300 restaurants! Being on the coast, it’s all about seafood. Head to Playa de Burriana and you’ll find plenty of restaurants right on the seafront. La Barca specialises in and barbecued fish, mussels and more. For paella head to Chiringuito de Ayo , which also featured on the 80s TV show Verano Azul.

Or for super gourmet food, Oliva restaurant serves seasonal Mediterranean food with a twist, and always receives rave reviews. Lots of people say it’s one of the best restaurants in Nerja.

Thanks to Spain and the Costa Del Sol for inviting me to explore southern Spain. As always, all opinions are my own.

Absolute gem of a place, my dear friend has a house here lovely views and spectacular sceneries too. Food is great fairly priced bus transportation is great cheap and to Grenada €10 well worth the views and as for the caves well Wow. Enjoy.

Wow I had no idea it was so cheap to get to Granada from there. I really liked Granada too when I last visited!

It’s a beautiful town. I would recommend the Rio Chillar walk, Summer is best for this, you will get wet feet, but it is so cooling, relaxing and peaceful.

Great tip – I haven’t heard about that but just googled it and WOW! Looks so amazing. I’d love to head back in the summer so hopefully I’ll get a chance! Cx

Where Is Nerja

Nerja sits to the very east of the Costa del Sol in Spain . Costa del Sol is one of Spain’s Mediterranean regions – and one of its best known. Nerja overlooks the sea just below one of Spain’s national parks.

Why Visit Nerja

The town is close to the large city of Malaga, meaning you can easily plan day trips between the two. Nerja is a 45-minute drive from Malaga. You can also take the bus to Malaga from Nerja and the journey lasts about an hour.

Check out this day trip to Nerja and Frigiliana from Malaga.

The communities of La Herradura and Motril, as well as the city of Almeria, are other day trip possibilities. This area of Southern Spain boasts idyllic beaches, natural attractions and Moorish heritage, meaning you’ll be able to visit famous architectural relics. Staying in Nerja puts you in an ultra-convenient location with the added touch of a seaside community.

7 Cool Things To Do in Nerja

Nerja is guaranteed to keep you busy no matter how long you’re planning to stay. Consider the following recommendations for the coolest things to do in Nerja and around.

1. Visit Cueva de Nerja

Located east of Nerja’s town centre, Cuevas de Nerja (Nerja Caves) is one of the most beloved Nerja attractions. The cave network is a five-minute drive from town or a short 15-minute bus ride. You can also hop on the Cueva Tren , a charming train-car-inspired vehicle that gets you from the Nerja Museum to the caves in minutes.

Measuring nearly five kilometres, the caves boast the world’s largest stalagmite. Cave paintings have been found inside, making this a cultural and natural artefact. The Caves of Nerja are open throughout the year, though hours vary slightly based on the season.

Thanks to their natural chambers, the caves also make a perfect music venue. Summer concerts happen regularly, so check the schedule if you’re arriving in the peak season.

An audio tour helps guests learn more about the underground environment as they walk through. Book your tickets with an audioguide to Nerja Caves.

2. Step Inside The Museum of Nerja

Located on Nerja’s Plaza de España, the town museum is an amazing resource to learn about Nerja’s history and culture and one of the best things to see in Nerja. Visitors will also have a chance to learn more about the Nerja caves through museum exhibits. Interactive showcases include archaeological artefacts and the stories of other communities throughout the region.

The three-floor museum is a great way to spend an informative morning. Not to mention it’s one of the best things to do in Nerja when it rains. Hours may vary based on the season, but the museum is generally open daily.

For more information about admission fees and opening hours , click here .

3. Hit The Beach

Nerja’s beautiful beaches are no secret, so be sure to check out more than one. The most popular is Playa Burriana , where you’ll find all the amenities you need to plan a full day out on the sand. The beach features plenty of restaurants, shops and water activities on an idyllic slice of the Mediterranean coastline. Other beaches you can visit in the city centre are Playa de la Calahonda and Playa Torrecilla .

This image shows a beach lined with tall buildings. If you're wondering what to do in Nerja, hitting the beach should be at the top of your list.

For another beach that is easily accessible on foot from town, consider Playa El Chorrillo . This stretch of sand is known for its huge boulders, which make it easy to find shady spots and hideaways on the sand.

For a more private beach experience, take the short drive to Playa del Molino de Papel . Located just east of town, this beach with crystal clear waters is much quieter than Burriana Beach and is home to an old paper mill and an 18th-century tower. This beach has a more natural feel, with views of the Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs completing the picture.

This image shows a beach with tall rocks and straw umbrellas.

5. Wander Around The Balcon de Europa

Nerja’s Balcón de Europa is its most iconic lookout and what should top your list of what to do in Nerja. Offering views of Calahonda Beach and Caletilla Beach on both sides and the Mediterranean horizon, the balcony is worth a sunset visit. A former fort site, the balcony is in the heart of Nerja, making it a great meeting point.

This image shows a big hotel on the beach. The town with its tall buildings is at the background.

Street performers, ice cream shops and a lively atmosphere will keep you coming back, especially if you’re staying nearby. The balcony is within easy walking distance to Nerja’s restaurants and shops.

This image shows people walking along a palm tree-lined wide boulevard at the Balcon de Europa Nerja.

6. Admire The Eagle Aqueduct

Located just minutes from central Nerja, the Eagle Aqueduct is a 19th-century aqueduct that is still used for irrigation purposes today. Towering between two hillsides, the aqueduct is architecturally beautiful and offers great photo opportunities. There is visitor parking nearby.

7. Chill Along Chillar River

For another way to get to know Nerja’s natural landscape, take the forested river walk running along the Rio Chillar just north of town. This adventure is best for experienced hikers, as the terrain can be unpredictable. Hikers may find themselves wading through parts of the river, so proper shoes are essential.

The walk is best done in the summer months when water levels recede. Set aside at least six hours for the journey and plan ahead. Along the way, visitors can enjoy natural swimming holes and a cascading waterfall. The river trailhead is accessible via a 30-minute walk from town. If you’re driving, you can find a parking space on nearby Calle Mirto.

Now That You Know What To Do in Nerja, What’s Next?

While there are clearly many things to do in Nerja, you may want to plan a few day trips to take full advantage of your Southern Spain getaway. The following destinations are some of the most popular and accessible day trips from Nerja.

The closest large city to Nerja, Malaga is a must. The city is about an hour and a half away via public transportation or an hour by car. Once in Malaga, it’s easy to lose yourself in the bustle and charm of this historic coastal destination.

The Moorish fortress of Alcazaba draws visitors from across the world and is a great way to spend an entire day. The complex includes ornate structures, as well as green, carefully manicured gardens. The Generalife gardens located just next door are an ideal place to recharge while surrounded by nature.

Other tourist attractions include the local Picasso Museum, Playa de la Malagueta and the views from Gibralfaro Castle. The city’s historic centre is a great place to start wandering. Explore on your own or book a walking tour to learn about the city from an expert .

A similar distance away from Nerja, Granada is another sizable city to add to your itinerary. The city’s famous Alhambra complex features Moorish palaces, courtyards and more, transporting you to another era.

Historic churches, lively plazas and local restaurants fill the rest of the city, giving you plenty to do over the course of a day or even a weekend. If you prefer to discover a new city on foot, take a walk through the hilly Albaicin neighbourhood, which offers views of the city among its charming streets and squares.

La Herradura Bay

Located just 15 minutes from Nerja by bus, the resort area of La Herradura makes a short, calming day trip. La Herradura Bay Beach is known for its windswept beauty and is lined with various local eateries. If you’re up for a walk, check out the hike to the Punta de La Mona Lighthouse, located south of the beach.

Malaga Car

Flanked by a dramatic mountain range, Sierra Almijara, to the east, the town has, fortunately, managed to avoid being blighted by the concrete high-rise scenario which has been the inevitable result of the tourist boom in some of the coastal resorts. The old quarter of the town is still virtually unchanged with narrow, winding streets, whitewashed houses with wrought iron terraces overflowing with geraniums, on which a canary can sometimes be heard singing...

However, the heart of Nerja is its spectacular Balcón de Europa the "Balcony of Europe", a magnificent promenade along the edge of a towering cliff, once the site of the great Moorish castle, with sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the small coves and beaches below, against an awesome backdrop of hazy blue mountains.

The town's monuments include the 17th century Church of El Salvador , in a style which is a charming mixture of baroque and Moorish, or mudéjar, and the beautiful Gardens of Capistrano Playa , which descend to Burriana Beach.

Sierras Above Nerja

The Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara and Almara were designated a natural park in 1999, this large and rugged mountainous region of 40,663ha stretches across the provincial border of Granada and Malaga. Its western part in Malaga province is known as the  Axarquía  and is famous for its attractive villages dating from Moorish times. It is also superb hiking country and its numerous steep mountainsides make it ideal for climbers. Its highest peak is La Maroma, at 2,080m. Accessible from Nerja and Vélez-Málaga on the Costa del Sol. Routes range from easy strolls to strenuous climbs. The mountains are largely limestone, with some summits reaching over 2000m.

Nerja Restaurants

Nerja cuisine includes several specialities including De La Doncella (red mullet) and pescaito frito (fried fish) and ranging from top international cuisine to the ubiquitous sausage, eggs and chips! There is no shortage of restaurants  to choose from.
