This is one of the world’s most popular wedding destinations with thousands of people tying the knot here every year. We are more than happy to include a flight quote separately to your package so that you can decide if you would like to book with us or on your own.  While booking flights can seem straight-forward, there are often hidden fees or classes of service that do not include seat assignments, meals or checked bags. We have been booking flights since 1985 and know the best routings and have great contracts that mean we often have better prices than what you will see online.

In Scotland and England, we generally try to book hotels that are at a 4 star level or higher. In some situations, we will book some 3 star or B&B properties but we do require them to be at a certain standard. We try to ensure a member of the team have stayed at each property in recent years or that we have done a site inspection.

Planning Deposits

Your first vacation quote, and up to two revisions, for trips of 9 or fewer days, and 45 days in advance of travel, are complimentary. If an itinerary requires further revisions subsequent to this, we will require a non-refundable deposit of $75 per person in order to continue.

If you are requesting a quote for a vacation that is 10 days in length, or with travel dates within 45 days, or to a non-core destination, a deposit of $75 per person will be required in order for us to begin working on your proposal.

Planning deposits can then be put towards the cost of the trip should you decide to proceed with the booking.

Destination Guide to the North of England

A region of contrasts, the North of England combines some of the nation’s most untamed landscapes and characterful urban centres.

Stretching from the cities of Chester, Liverpool and Manchester up to the Scottish border, the north of England encompasses some of England’s most traditional counties including Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria. The area is renowned for its wild and untamed natural beauty home to no less than four of England’s ten national parks; possibly most renowned are the sweeping lakes, valleys and dales of the Lake District, whilst the windswept Hills of Northumberland and the brooding, barren landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors are not to be missed. These areas of protected beauty provide an ample stomping ground for hikers, climbers, hill-walkers and outdoor enthusiasts whilst in the past they have inspired artists, authors and poets including Turner, Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter, the Bronte Sisters and Herriot to name but a few.

Some of England’s richest history can be found in the northern territories which have been influenced by England’s inhabitants throughout the ages. The footprint of the Romans is evident with heritage sites dotted throughout the region, particularly around Chester and not least along the ancient Roman frontier at the border with Scotland on Hadrian’s Wall. Norman Castles are a feature of the landscapes and there are still reminders of Viking occupation, particularly at the archaeological digs in York. Amongst the north’s most impressive sites is the UNESCO World Heritage site at the 800 yr old Fountains Abbey and Georgian water gardens.

The people of the North of England are said to be down-to-earth and warmly welcoming to visitors but are also renowned for their quirky accents and character. This rich character is reflected in the region’s major cities which are vibrant and abundant in individual personality. Manchester and Liverpool are vibrant urban centres born of the industrial revolution but experiencing revivals in recent years to make them contemporary and en-vogue cities of 21st century England. Between them they have made disproportionate contributions to England’s popular culture whether in fashion, sport, commerce or music marked most notably in the international renown of the Beatles and Manchester United Football Club. Likewise Newcastle is an up-and-coming modern city. By contrast York and Durham offer highly traditional English experiences, each dappled with historic landmarks from the glorious gothic architecture of York Minster and the UNESCO world Heritage site at the Norman built Durham Cathedral.

The North of England is not to be missed on your vacation to England, home to world-renowned countryside, cityscapes old and new, and an utterly unique culture.

Scotland Expedition Cruise: Western Isles of Staffa, Iona & the Ross of Mull

Welcome to a magical place and islands full of wonder...

Iona, birthplace of western Christianity was where, in AD563, Saint Columba founded an abbey when he travelled over from Ireland. Iona has been for centuries a place of Christian pilgrimage and here the early abbey monks created the wonderful Book of Kells. Saint Columba and 48 Scottish kings, including Macbeth, as well as some Irish and French kings, are buried on Iona. One can walk in peaceful solitude along the island paths away from the Abbey.

Staffa has one of the world's most spectacular natural marvels in Fingal's cave - one of the islands many sea caves. The soaring beauty of the island and the cave's towering, six-sided basalt columns are famously captured by Mendelssohn's Hebridean Overture.

As we travel around the Isle of Mull we can see incredible wildlife - soaring sea and golden eagles, basking sharks, minke and killer whales, porpoises, dolphins, seabirds and seals. On board our small ships you can do as little or as much as you want. Sit back and enjoy the trip as you travel through the island's picturesque Sounds and sea lochs; view the spectacular mountains of Mull including mighty Ben More; marvel at the headland lighthouses and castles and get involved in working our wee small ships – it is all up to you.

Scotland Small Isles Cruise: Isle of Skye & surrounding isles

A small cruise around the sea lochs of the Isle of Skye and the Small Isles (Muck, Eigg, Rum and Canna) has to be one of the best ways to visit the Hebridean islands. Extraordinary Scottish wildlife is everywhere from minke and occasional killer and humpback whales, dolphins, porpoises, basking sharks, otters to many species of rare sea birds, especially sea eagles.

Throughout the mini cruise you will anchor in secluded and tranquil sea lochs and sail against a spectacular backdrop of dramatic, pristine island coastlines, high sea cliffs, wild mountains and forests. For extra fun, bring your kitesurf or windsurfer, swim from the boat and don't forget your hiking boots for stunning island walks.

You start your cruise from Oban (Dunstaffnage marina), and visit or sail past the stunning Small Isles and the west coast of Skye, which in Loch Scavaig has the most spectacular wilderness anchorage in the whole of Scotland. We travel along the west coast of Skye and at the next anchorage you can even visit Skye's famous Talisker malt whisky distillery.

Full Tour Itinerary

Select Day:

Day 1 - Glasgow/Edinburgh - Lairg - Kinlochbervie

From Glasgow and Edinburgh, our Far North Adventure starts by crossing the Firth of Forth to reach the Kingdom of Fife and the rolling farmlands of Perthshire beyond.

There is a break for refreshments before we continue through the Grampian Mountains to reach the Spey Valley and the scenic beauty of the Cairngorms National Park .

From Inverness we head for Tain, then along the banks of the Dornoch Firth to reach Bonar Bridge and the famous Falls of Shin , where salmon battle their way upstream to spawn.

From Lairg, we head for Loch Shin then Loch Stack, which is overshadowed by the dramatic cliffs of Ben Stack. Journeys end today is Kinlochbervie , a thriving fishing port on the banks of Loch Inchard.

Overnight: Kinlochbervie Hotel, Kinlochbervie (or similar) (2 nights)

Day 2 - Isle of Handa Excurison

Enjoy a relaxing breakfast before joining our coach for the short drive to Tarbet where the ferry will take us to Handa Island , which is internationally recognised for its extensive seabird colonies and impressive sea cliffs.

This island was a thriving community up until 1848 when the potato famine forced the residents to emigrate to Nova Scotia, Canada. Since then the island has been unoccupied and is now a nature reserve operated by the Scottish Wildlife Trust .

We'll have three-hours ashore to explore Handa, which rises to 400 feet (121 m) above sea level. The island is home to over 150 different species of birds including over 100,000 guillemots. Other residents include razorbills, kittiwakes and, the always-popular puffins .

You can discover the ruined settlement that was home to the island's population and learn the traditions of the island which had its own parliament which met daily to delegate the essential chores.

Day 3 - Kinlochbervie - Tongue - Thurso

A day of dramatic scenery awaits as we travel across the very top of Scotland to reach our next hotel in Thurso.

From our Kinlochbervie, we travel through the desolate landscapes of North West Sutherland. The locals call this area "The Lonely Lands", you'll soon appreciate why.

The Kyle of Durness leads us to the little village of Durness, which was a holiday favourite of John Lennon . He had a cousin who lived here and spent many childhood holidays in the area. The village has a garden dedicated to his memory.

Our first stop will be to visit the impressive Smoo Cave . The entrance is the largest of any sea cave in the British Isles. On our visit see the thundering waters of the Allt Smoo cascade 196 feet (60m) through a sinkhole into the inner cave below.

The tour continues along the banks of Loch Eriboll, a picturesque sea loch, then passed Ben Hope, the tallest mountain in the north of Scotland to reach Tongue, which gets its name from the Norse, meaning "tunga".

A short drive away, we'll stop in Bettyhill to visit the Strathnaver Museum which tells the history of the region from prehistoric times through to the rise of the Clan MacKay, which dominated the area.

The notorious 18th Century " Highland Clearances " is an important story told at the museum. Local people were evicted from their homes by the landowners to make way for commercial sheep farming. Many people made the decision to resettle in Glasgow or were "encouraged" to emigrate to the New World.

We'll make the short drive to Strathnaver, where we will see the now deserted homes and cottages of a once-thriving community. They provide a moving reminder of the 350 families that were forced to flee from this valley between 1814 and 1819.

Overnight: Station Hotel, Thurso (or similar) 2 nights

Day 4 - John O'Groats and Castle of Mey Excursion

After breakfast, we head out to discover more highlights of the Northern Highlands. Our first visit is to the spectacular cliffs at Duncansby Head. We'll see the lonely lighthouse that was built in 1924 then follow the coastal path to see the Long Geo of Sclaites, a massive collapsed cave which has created a deep cleft in the cliffs. A further walk along the clifftop provides an ideal viewpoint to see the impressive sea stacks.

Our next stop is to John O'Groats , the most northerly village on mainland Britain. Famous for its pairing with Lands End, 874 miles to the south, this is the start or end point for all types of human endeavour, often used to raise money for good causes. During our visit, a selfie at the signpost is almost obligatory, but the main attraction here are the views over the wild waters of the Pentland Firth towards the Orkney Islands.

Next is a visit to the Castle of Mey . It was built in the 1600s by the Earl of Caithness and stands overlooking the Pentland Firth. It had fallen into disrepair when HM Queen Elizabeth, the late Queen Mother bought it in 1952. In her ownership, the castle was completely renovated, and the grounds developed to create the beautiful gardens we can see today.

The Castle of Mey became a favoured residence, and The Queen Mother holidayed there for nearly 50 years with her last visit being in 2001.

Our last stop today is at Dunnet Head, the most northerly point on the British mainland.  It offers remarkable views over the Pentland Firth and the little island of Stroma.

We return to Thurso in time to relax before dinner.

Day 5 - Thurso - Tain - Edinburgh/Glasgow

We say farewell to Thurso after breakfast and start our journey southwards.

For much of the tour we've followed the North Coast 500 route and today we will experience some of the fine coastal scenery that this famous journey is famed for.

We will see several small fishing villages that hug the coastline, reminders of the importance of herring fishing to this part of the country in the 19th Century. As we cross the Dornoch Firth, we come to Tain, once more which completes our circular tour of the far north of Scotland.

From here, our homeward journey follows the outward route. We'll make a stop for refreshments before reaching Edinburgh then Glasgow by early evening.

James Rainey stands beside a twisted birch tree.

Restoration is possible: the hunt for Scotland’s ancient wild pinewoods

Trees for Life and Woodland Trust Scotland hope to revive remote pockets of forgotten forest before they vanish

James Rainey reads trees like most people read signposts.

The senior ecologist with the rewilding charity Trees for Life is using a small hand lens to identify a particular lichen that is wreathing the base of an aspen tree in a secluded glen on the west coast of Scotland . He is looking for “ecological clues” of species associated with the ancient Caledonian forest that once covered most of the Highlands, like this aspen, certain wildflowers, such as serrated wintergreen, and some lichens, such as black-eyed Susan and Norwegian specklebelly.

Wild pines have been growing in Scotland since the last ice age. This is a globally unique ecosystem that supports rare wildlife, including red squirrels, capercaillie and crossbills. Now less than 2% of the original growth survives, with just 84 individual Caledonian pinewoods officially recognised, having last been documented more than a quarter of a century ago.

But now Trees for Life and Woodland Trust Scotland have become aware of up to 50 other hitherto uncharted wild pinewoods, both from historical documents and anecdotal contemporary reports. The charities have turned tree detectives as they embark on the painstaking process of mapping – and hopefully reviving – these remote pockets of forgotten forest before they vanish for ever.

James Rainey stands beneath a remnant Scots pine.

Rainey says the ecological investigators use three strands of evidence to pinpoint where these pinewoods first stood.

“First there’s the historical evidence, like old maps and texts,” he says. “Rev Timothy Pont, a Church of Scotland minister and cartographer, made incredible sketch maps of the Highlands in the late 1500s, which mention ‘fir woods’ in some areas, the old word for pine woods.”

There are cultural clues too, such as Gaelic place names referring to pine or woodlands.

The first ordnance surveys of the 1800s were remarkably accurate, and often used conifer symbols to represent pine woods. Trees for Life digitised these maps and superimposed the present-day landscape, making it easier to identify where they suggest unplanted or wild pine sites once were.

Rainey says: “Then we look at the landscape context of the site: is the pine associated with planting around a big house for example, or is the setting more natural?

“And finally, we use the ecological evidence: wild pine usually grows alongside old birch trees, while planted pine is often mixed with larch. Many ancient pinewoods also have lots of stumps scattered through them, and certain kinds of plants and lichens that indicate ecological continuity.”

After the last ice age, the pine was one of the first trees to return to Scotland, and there are microfossils in Glen Affric that date from 9,900 years ago. Mainly a tree of the Highlands and uplands, most of its decline has been caused by human deforestation.

Rainey inspects a remnant Scots pine.

“The emphasis after the second world war was on creating strategic resources for Britain, resulting in many areas of the Highlands being ploughed and planted in rows for commercial forestry,” says Rainey. “This was often done with cheap land that included ancient woodlands and it was really devastating to the last remaining trees.”

Restoration is possible, however, especially since some old trees survive along with the ancient woodland soil and seed bank: seeds stored in the soil, which can germinate once the heavy shade of commercial conifers is removed.

after newsletter promotion

On the site we are currently exploring, which ranges along a river gorge, through woodland and commercial forestry then up to a high mountain dam across nearly 10 miles (16km), Trees for Life estimates there are about 85,000 seedlings unable to grow taller because of grazing by sheep and deer. Commercial trees – such as Sitka spruce – are not as tasty to the herbivores, so are usually left alone.

As the gorge deepens, Rainey points out the first indications of ancient woodland: a huge stool with thickly twisted trunks of regrowth, like a petrified octopus clinging to the rocky bank and aged between 400 and 500 years old.

Rainey holds a Scots pine sapling or seedling.

Rainey has identified 23 pines in this area, 17 in the gorge and six on the crags higher up the mountain, all rooted in places least accessible to grazing deer. The needles have been taken for genetic testing to confirm their heritage.

Further along the gorge, we find a clump of pines beside the river, each of them in a uniquely gnarled and complicated shape, unlike the uniform rows of bushy soldiers standing to attention in the commercial plantations.

A few more kilometres in we find a young wild pine, a fresh blue-green in colour, probably a sapling from one of the ancient river trees, and aged about 12 years, according to the nodes that grow annually. It has already been eaten down by deer.

Much further up the mountain, buffeted by an icy wind, a handful of ancient pines are huddled in inaccessible spots across the otherwise bare shoulder.

Rainey says: “This would have been filled with trees but is now empty – these are the most critical areas in need of regeneration and we want the whole of the old growth woodlands to recover, not just the pines, but oak, rowan, birch, alder, hazel.

“In 100 years’ time people could be looking at quite a full woodland on this side of the hill and not believe that it was in such a state of degradation – the capercaillie and wildcat could live in a place like this – so if you want them back too then you have to restore these woods.”

The prestigious boozing body has revealed the 94 ‘county winners’ of its 2024 awards

Ed Cunningham

The UK’s pubs and bars come in all shapes and sizes. Such is the variety within Britain’s drinking scene that it’s tough to really rank the country’s watering holes: you’ve got your all-time great boozers , sure, but there are also the ones with spectacular gardens and views , glitzy innovators, quiet charmers and, obvs, everyone’s individual, highly subjective faves.

On the hunt for the latest award-winning UK pubs? You’ve come to the right place. Today (April 8) the National Pub and Bar Awards has announced the victors of its 2024 edition, naming 94 ‘county winners’ across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Those winning pubs will go on to compete for regional titles at an awards ceremony on June 26, as well as for prestigious prizes like ‘national pub and bar of the year’ and ‘pub group of the year’.

Wondering if your local made the cut? Without further ado, here are all the ‘county winners’ of the National Pub and Bar Awards 2024.

A yellow warning is in place from 8am until 10pm on Saturday for parts of western Britain and Northern Ireland.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Christoph Almond said: “Gusts of 50 mph are expected quite widely on Saturday, while some exposed spots, particularly on the coast, will see 60 to 70 mph gusts with large waves also likely.”

⚠️ Yellow weather warning issued ⚠️ Strong winds across Northern Ireland, southern Scotland and western parts of England and Wales Saturday 0800 – 2200 Latest info 👉 https://t.co/QwDLMfRBfs Stay #WeatherAware ⚠️ pic.twitter.com/YOYcDvKLlv — Met Office (@metoffice) April 4, 2024

Warm in many places too

As this area of low pressure moves north-eastwards, it will be drawing up unseasonably warm air from Iberia for a time. This warm air will see temperatures rise across the UK, causing some areas to see values above 20°C for the first time this year. The locations likely to see the highest temperatures will be in parts of East Anglia and Southeast England where 21°C or 22°C is not out of the question briefly on Saturday.

Into next week

Beyond the weekend the confidence in the forecast isn’t as high, but there is a robust signal for further rain next week in the north, but a hint of more settled conditions in the south of England at times, especially in the second half of next week with temperatures a little above average.

Our Weekend Outlook video will be live on the Met Office YouTube channel later today.

Essential Britain & Ireland

Very nice itinerary ... jam packed days and evenings. I chose not to do any of the extra evening excursions that were offered so I was able to use the time to explore every overnight stop on my own. The tour guide was amazing... so full of knowledge about all the countries/areas we visited.

Best of Britain (11 Days)

This was our first trip to the UK. The tour covered all we wanted to see. The coach was comfortable and the drivers very friendly. Patricia was an excellent guide very caring and knowledgeable about the history of the UK. The Isle of Skye section needs to be rethought - a long day with not a lot of the Isle covered. The local guide at Liverpool could not be heard on the walking tour. Very satisfied with the 11 day tour and would recommend it to travelers looking to see a large area of the UK.

We felt there was too many places and not enough time Plymouth was a waste of time and Cardiff.we didnt see any thing of Fort William or Inverness and as for Hadrians wall what a joke !! Group photos at Anne Hathaway cottage but no time to see cottage or gardens .then dropped off at shakespeares birthplace for shops !! Long way to Culloden not to have time to go into the museum. Too many hours at Blarney on a wet day in the woolen mill. But apart from that Rosemary was fantastic Julian great driver took a while to warm... enjoyed our holiday but not one of our better cosmos experiences.

Essential Britain Tour

Essential Britain

The boat tour in Plymouth was not worth the time and neither was the boat trip to Skye. Too little time on The Isle of Skye and at Culloden. I would rather have driven to Skye and spent more time touring there. Accommodations were overall excellent. Good locations and clean. Coach was clean and the driver was excellent however there were some issues with WiFi ports working. Some did and some worked only occasionally. The tour director was average. She was friendly and kind. She wasn’t great. Not as much fun as another tour director I’ve had. One issue I had was that because I didn’t do the Edinburgh tours (I had already seen them previously), I didn’t know what time we were leaving the next morning. I left a voice message for Marge at the hotel and she never got back to me. It wasn’t a huge issue but I was surprised she didn’t get back to me. I got up early and just asked other travelers what time we were leaving when they came down for breakfast. I could have called her cell phone number but thought she would get the message at the hotel. Overall a good trip. Worth the money.
