Business Entity Choices for Travel Agency
Any individual who is willing to open a Tour and Travel agency could open it under various selections of business entities, and these choices are left with the person who wants to start the business. Entrepreneurs generally select Private Limited companies as the preferred one amongst the rest, because Private Limited companies get a lot of benefits and subsidies from the government.
Also, business enterprises like Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) or One Person Company (OPC) could also be preferable for businesspersons who want to gradually build the business or carry it out on a part-time basis. As Limited Liability Partnerships have no obligation for audit unless the turnover goes beyond Rs.40 lakhs in a year, it shall be ideal for businesspersons who are getting their first-hand experience in their Tour and Travel agency venture. Then again, OPCs can also be ideal for businesspersons who are establishing their commerce as a single individual and want to avoid having broad compliance-related requirements to follow. However, a business enterprise offering limited liability status as well as separate legal entity status shall be perfect for a travel agent.
GST Registration for the Travel Business
It is important for business owners to adopt GST Registration so that they could collect GST from the customers on the service incurred through the business.
GST payable by Air Travel Agent is;
• Commission income from the airlines for booking domestic air tickets, GST at the rate of 18% on 5% of Basic fare
• Commission income from the airlines for booking international air tickets at the rate of 18% GST on 10% of basic fare
• Processing/service fee for booking of tickets for the customer, GST at the rate of 18% on invoice from Air traveller
Trademark Required for the Travel Business
If the businessperson wishes to have a unique name and symbol, he could do so by means of registering as a trademark provided under the Intellectual Property Rights laws in India.
Becoming a Government of India approved Travel Agent
By registration as a Government of India approved Travel Agent is not compulsory; it is useful and provides recognition for the travel agent. The goal and objective of the scheme for recognition of Travel Agent or Agency (TA) is to boost the quality standard and service in the tourism industry. In order to become a Government of India recognized travel agent, the travel agent is required to satisfy few requirements on capital invested, number of employees employed, maintenance of minimum office space as well as other stipulations. Furthermore, application should be made towards the Ministry of tourism in the prescribed format in order to become a Government of India approved Travel Agent.
The Travel agency is required to be approved by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). This travel Association offers several training methods and professional development services towards the travel agencies. IATA accreditation is very much preferred seal of approval recognized worldwide. It is important for a travel agency or for a travel agent availing international travel packages towards being a member of IATA, as it gives a lot of benefits in the air services across the globe.

Starting A Travel Agency In India
Tourism and travel hold a prominent position within India’s economy, creating substantial employment opportunities. According to the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the travel and tourism sector contributes between 6-7 percent of total global employment.
Tourism directly benefits the hospitality and travel sectors. It has a positive ripple effect on ancillary industries like food manufacturing, services, construction, and foreign exchange earnings while contributing to employment, income, and foreign currency inflow into the country.
Beginning with India’s iconic attraction, the Taj Mahal, the country offers a multitude of destinations that every individual should experience at least once in their lifetime. This makes India a highly appealing destination for both domestic and international tourists.
Various Indian states, including Goa and the northeastern regions, heavily rely on tourism as their primary source of revenue. Additionally, major cities such as Delhi, Bangalore, and Mumbai have undergone significant cosmopolitan transformations due to the steady influx of international tourists.
Considering all these factors, it is evident that tourism has become an indispensable contributor to the overall revenue of the country. However, it’s important to acknowledge that thriving in the tourism industry is a challenging endeavour, and commencing a travel agency involves a series of intricate steps and processes.
Choice of Business Entity
Travel agents today have a range of business entity options to select from, and the choice largely hinges on their business plan. Many travel agents opt for the Private Limited Company structure, which is widely recognized in India and comes with a slew of advantages. This option is particularly well-suited for entrepreneurs aiming to offer their services online and rapidly expand their business by harnessing the power of the Internet.
Alternatively, there are relatively recent business entities like Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) and One Person Company (OPC) , which may be more fitting for those looking to gradually develop their business or operate part-time. LLPs, for instance, don’t require an audit unless the turnover exceeds Rs. 40 lakhs in a year, making them suitable for entrepreneurs gaining firsthand experience in their ventures. OPCs, on the other hand, are ideal for sole proprietors who wish to minimize extensive compliance requirements and maintain a simpler structure.
In both cases, what’s common is the selection of a business entity that provides limited liability protection and establishes a separate legal identity for the travel agent’s business.
Moreover, entrepreneurs have the option of a proprietorship with a trademark, which can be useful when a unique brand name is desired, but it cannot be registered with the Ministry of Company Affairs due to naming guidelines. This allows entrepreneurs to safeguard their brand while choosing a different business structure that aligns with their specific needs and goals.
GST Registration for Travel Businesses
In the context of travel businesses, business owners must undergo GST registration . This enables them to collect GST (Goods and Services Tax) from customers for the services rendered by the business.
Under GST, the tax payable by Air Travel Agents is as follows:
- For commission income earned from airlines when booking domestic air tickets, GST is charged at a rate of 18% on 5% of the basic fare.
- For commission income generated from airlines for booking international air tickets, GST is levied at an 18% rate on 10% of the basic fare.
- Processing or service fees for booking tickets for customers attract a GST rate of 18% based on the invoice from the air traveller.
Trademark Registration for Travel Businesses
Entrepreneurs in the travel industry who aim to establish a distinct identity through a unique name and symbol have the option to achieve this by registering their business as a trademark. This process is governed by the Intellectual Property Rights laws in India and provides legal protection for their brand identity.
Structuring Your Travel Agency Business: Key Choices and Considerations
When starting a travel agency , business owners can choose from several business structures. These options are adaptable and can be customized to suit the tastes of the business owner. The numerous government subsidies and incentives that travel agencies can obtain drive many entrepreneurs to choose to establish their businesses as private limited companies .
If you would rather take your time building your travel company, a limited liability partnership (LLP) might be the best option. It’s crucial to remember that providing online services might not be possible in this situation. This restriction needs to be carefully considered, given the Internet’s role in expanding the tourism sector.
Entrepreneurs can register a trademark under India’s intellectual property rights rules to give their travel firm a unique name and logo.
GST Taxation for Travel Agents
For travel agents, GST (Goods and Services Tax) registration becomes mandatory when their annual turnover exceeds ₹20,00,000. However, if the travel agency operates in different states, the threshold for mandatory GST registration is reduced to ₹100,000. It’s important to note that the ₹200,000 threshold doesn’t apply when the travel agency is involved in taxable inter-state transactions. In such cases, GST registration is required regardless of the turnover amount.
The table provides a list of SAC (Services Accounting Code) for various services offered by travel agents for their outward supply:
How to become a Government-Approved Trade Agent?
Becoming a government-approved trade agent involves meeting specific criteria related to capital investment, the size of your agency’s workforce, and office space. To achieve recognition as a trade agency, it’s crucial to adhere to these requirements.
The process typically entails applying, following a designated format, to the Ministry of Tourism. A recognized travel agency should sponsor this application. While official registration might not be compulsory, it is highly advisable to seek recognition as a trade agency rather than operating as an unrecognized agent.
Furthermore, it’s important to note that the government actively promotes these recognitions. This support is aimed at upholding a consistent and high standard in the services provided by these agencies. In essence, becoming a government-approved trade agent involves satisfying specific criteria and engaging with the formal recognition process, which is encouraged to maintain service quality standards.
“ IATA ,” short for the International Air Transport Association , is a global organization that represents approximately 84% of all airlines worldwide. This influential association offers a range of training materials and resources to travel agencies falling under its jurisdiction.
Becoming a member of IATA is highly recommended for travel agencies, and it offers numerous advantages. For travel agencies dealing with international travel packages, IATA membership is particularly significant. This affiliation provides substantial discounts on air services on a global scale, making it a valuable resource for both the agency and its customers. Essentially, joining IATA is not just beneficial but often essential for travel agencies looking to thrive in the international travel market.
The most important thing to remember is that India ranks 12th in the world for the amount that travel and tourism contribute to the country’s GDP . Furthermore, this industry is expected to increase at a 7.8% annual rate between 2013 and 2023. This emphasizes how important tourism is to the growth of India’s economy. The Indian government has implemented several subsidies and incentives to assist nascent ventures in the travel agency sector in recognition of this noteworthy contribution. These policies aim to promote and facilitate the travel agency industry’s expansion, attracting new companies and entrepreneurs to enter this lucrative market.

Step 4: Choose a location When choosing a location for your travel agency, consider accessibility and visibility.
Look for a location that is easily accessible to your target market and has a high amount of foot traffic. You may also want to consider a location near hotels, airports, or tourist attractions .
Step 5: Set up an office Once you have chosen a location, set up your office. This may include leasing office space, purchasing office furniture and equipment, and installing telephone and internet connections.
Step 6: Hire staff As your travel agency grows, you may need to hire additional staff to manage your business.
Consider hiring travel agents, customer service representatives, and administrative staff. Look for employees with experience in the travel industry and a passion for travel.
Step 7: Develop relationships with suppliers Developing relationships with suppliers, such as airlines, hotels, and tour operators, is essential for the success of your travel agency.
These relationships can help you negotiate better rates and provide your clients with better deals. Attend trade shows and networking events to meet potential suppliers and build relationships.
Step 8: Create a website and social media presence In today’s digital age, having a website and social media presence is essential for any business.
Create a website for your travel agency that provides information on your services, destinations, and pricing.
Develop a social media presence on platforms like Facebook and Instagram to connect with potential clients and showcase your services.
Step 9: Market your business Marketing is key to the success of any business, including a travel agency. Consider advertising in local publications or partnering with other businesses to promote your services. Attend trade shows and events to showcase your agency and build relationships with potential clients.
Step 10: Provide exceptional customer service Providing exceptional customer service is crucial for the success of your travel agency.
Make sure that your staff is knowledgeable and helpful, and provide your clients with personalized service.
Respond to customer inquiries promptly and go above and beyond to ensure that your clients have a memorable travel experience.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, starting a travel agency in India requires careful planning, attention to detail, and a passion for travel.
By following these steps, you can create a successful travel agency that provides memorable travel experiences to your clients.

07 Easy steps to start a successful Travel Agency Business in India
Want to travel the world? Ever dreamed of going on a world tour? Well, why not help others do the same, while you earn from it? Yes, we’re talking about opening your own travel agency!
A lot of people might not find this idea sound, as to how to start a travel agency in India but opening your own travel agency in India has a host of advantages. This market is vastly untapped in our country, and opening your travel agency might be simpler than you previously thought!
Moreover, it is said that India will account for 50 million outbound tourists by 2020! Analysts predict the travel and tourism sector to contribute approximately $492.21 billion to India’s GDP in 2028. This means the market for travel and tourism is growing at a rapid pace.
So well let’s see how to start travel business in India. Here are some tips on how you can set up your own travel agency in India: -
Develop an Understanding of The Tourist’s Desires
Several people have no clue as to what the majority of Indian population craves, regarding their travel needs. However, people from different regions of our country crave different travel destinations. For example, people from a region in Gujarat would have different travel preferences than someone living in Uttarakhand.
The geographical factors of a region, play a pivotal role in catering to the travel needs of people. This should be taken into consideration before you set up a travel business in a certain area.
Analyse the Market Trends
It is a well-known fact that travel businesses flourish more during a certain period of the year. For example, summers are known to attract more business for travel agencies, due to the vacations. Starting your business around this time would be quite beneficial, as there’ll be a higher demand for your services. Due to the introduction of e – Tourism Visa to foreign travelers, there has been a sharp Increase in them visiting India as tourists. Estimates claim a 252.3 % growth for foreign tourists coming to India on an e – Tourist Visa. Such an increase means that you could benefit from targeting foreign tourists as well.
Take Care of The Legal Formalities
Once you’ve formulated a definite plan for opening your travel agency, you need to consider the legal aspects of setting up such a business-like travel agency registration process. A few of the legal formalities to have a recognized travel agency include: -
- You need to register the agency as per the Companies Act.
- You need to get a GST Registration Of your agency.
- You need to provide an application letter to the Government as well as IATA (International Air Transport Association).
- The minimum office space should be around 100 – 150 sq. ft, depending on the region.
There are several benefits of getting your travel agency registered under IATA. A few of them are: -
- A badge of credibility to your travel business.
- More exposure to your agency (as it falls under the approved travel businesses)
Hire A Professional with Certification
To assist you in the process of setting up your travel business, you should consider hiring a travel and tourism professional. Such a professional with a certification can help you guide better with the do’s and don’ts of setting up a travel agency. Moreover, such professionals have a lot of practical experience in the field, which shall be helpful in bringing some real-world experience, while setting up the business.
Provide Options for Backpack Travellers
Travelers who go on trips with bare necessities and expenses are often called as backpack travelers. Such travelers generally make their ends meet by doing some chores to meet their accommodation, living and travel expenses. These could include cleaning, washing dishes, assisting in rigorous physical work, or simply cooking dishes. If you could provide budget options for such travelers, you could tap into a market with huge potential! By 2020, 320 million International trips are expected to take place by travelers in the younger generations. This is the generation that comprises the majority of backpack travelers. Low-cost accommodation and minimum travel expense options could be provided to such travelers. As these travelers do not require a lot of necessities to live elsewhere, you could formulate packages with their basic requirements in mind.
Form Business Tie-Ups
A business tie-up is an association in which two organizations benefit by promoting each other’s’ brands or products/services. These are quite beneficial for a lot of reasons. The benefits include: -
- Increased Client Base: - When two organizations form a business partnership, they get the benefit of directing each other’s clients through references and special discounts.
- Commissions: - A lot of organizations offer commissions for each client they get through the partner organization. In a travel business, you can earn huge amounts in commission, especially if the partner company is in a related niche (e.g.: A hotel or resort chain)
- Better Market Presence: - Business tie-ups lead to a lot of indirect promotion and marketing of your company. The reason is obvious, the more organizations you’re associated with, the more likely are people to know about your agency or business.
Get Started!
Yes! Even if you haven’t set up an agency, but have a definite vision for the business, you should make your travel business known right away! A lot of people are of the notion that one has to establish a business and only then market their services. However, that’s not true! While you’re setting up a business, even though it has not yet been operational, you could still market your services by letting people know that the travel agency shall soon cater to their needs.
For example: - Suppose you seek to start a travel agency called “Kashish tours and travels” You could start its marketing by distributing pamphlets or running newspaper/social media ads stating “Kashish tours and travels: - Your one-stop, travel stop! Opening soon!”
The travel and tourism industry in India has a lot of latent potential for making money.
Why may you ask? It’s because of the following: -
- The travel industry contributed around $208.9 billion to the Indian GDP in 2016.
- Around 9.6% of India’s total GDP was from this sector.
- Introduction of e – Tourist Visas has blown the travel market to new heights.
- The relaxing of some travel barriers has made it easier for people in India to travel.
Make the most of this travel frenzy, and establish a travel agency if you feel inclined to do so!

Travel Agency Registration Online: Legal requirements to start a business made simple
Do you also dream about how to start a travel agency in India? Pretty exciting, right?? Imagine yourself assisting others in organizing their ideal getaways, visiting far-off places, and creating priceless memories. It’s important to be aware of some legislative requirements before venturing into the industry of travel business. Don’t have an idea about Travel Agency Registration Online?
We’ve got you covered, so don’t worry! To make the registration procedure as easy as traveling by first class, we’ll explain all you need to know about how to start an online travel agency and its registration in this blog.
Comprehending Travel Agency Registration Online
To begin with: What precisely is the registration process for an online travel agency? That is, essentially, the procedure by which you legally set up your travel agency to conduct online operations.
In the current digital era, accessing a large potential client audience requires an online presence. An online travel agency enables you to serve customers from all around the world, around the clock, regardless of whether your main operations are in tranquil Kerala or hectic Mumbai.

How to Start a Travel Agency in India?
Are you prepared to start your own business? However, where do you even start? Do you know the legal requirements to start a business? Here’s an in-depth how-to guide to help you launch a travel agency:
Selecting the Correct Business Structure: Decide on your preferred registration type: private limited company, partnership, or sole proprietorship. Choose carefully depending on your company’s objectives and long-term objectives, as each structure has advantages and disadvantages.
Register Your Business Name: Give your travel agency a memorable and appealing name. Verify that it’s original and hasn’t been used by another business. When you’ve chosen the ideal name, protect your brand identification by registering it with the appropriate authorities.
Obtain Licenses and Permits That Are Required: This is the point at which the legal obligations become relevant. You will want particular licenses and permits to run a travel agency in India. These might consist of:
License for Travel Agency Registration Online: All travel agencies operating in India are required to have a travel agency license, which the Ministry of Tourism issues.
Goods and Services Tax (GST) Registration: To meet tax requirements and be eligible for input tax credits, you must register for the GST.
Accreditation of IATA: Although it’s not required, obtaining International Air Transport Association (IATA) accreditation can boost your reputation and grant you access to certain advantages.
Local Business Permits: More permits from local government agencies might be required based on where you are.
Establish Your Online Presence: To promote your services and attract clients, spend resources on a business-oriented website and engaging social media accounts. Never forget that a client’s initial impression of you comes from your online presence, thereby leaving an impression!

Legal prerequisites for starting a business
Let’s now explore more closely the legal requirements to start a business or establish a travel agency in India,
License for Travel Agency Registration Online: As previously said, getting a license for a travel agency is a requirement. Your possession of this license guarantees that you adhere to all applicable laws and rules. Several documents, including verification of identity, address, and financial stability, must be submitted with your license application.
GST Registration: In India, the supply of goods and services is subject to the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which is an indirect tax. You must collect and remit GST on your services as a registered travel agency. Ensuring compliance with the GST registration requirement is crucial, as noncompliance can lead to significant fines and penalties.
IATA accreditation: Getting IATA accreditation may greatly benefit your travel agency, even though it’s not mandatory by law. It gives you access to special discounts and commissions, the ability to directly issue airline tickets, and industry recognition. You must fulfill specific financial requirements and go through a thorough investigation process to obtain IATA accreditation.
Complying with Consumer Protection Laws: According to consumer protection laws, it is your responsibility as a travel agency to safeguard the interests and rights of your clients. This includes giving correct information regarding trip packages, making sure that prices are reasonable, and promptly addressing any disagreements. There may be legal consequences and damage to your reputation if you violate consumer protection laws.
It’s an amazing opportunity to launch an online travel agency in India , but it necessitates careful preparation and compliance with regulations. Set yourself up for success and start a fulfilling career in the travel business by following the steps laid out in this guide.
What are you waiting for then? Registering your travel agency now can help you take the first step toward realizing your entrepreneurial aspirations!

How to start a travel agency in india.
Despite the pandemic, the tourism industry in India is growing at an annual rate of 14%. So, it’s safe to say that now is as good a time as any to start your travel agency business in the country. But you need to be strategic and organised about it.
Starting a travel agency means getting the right licenses, partnering with airlines and hotels, figuring out visa procedures, finding the best business loan offers, among other things!
Let's explore in detail below.
Steps to Start a Travel Agency in India:
1. decide the kind of company you want to form.
Are you planning to be the sole owner of your travel agency, or do you have partners? Depending on the nature of your ownership, you can register the company as either a private limited company or a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP). But whatever you decide, know that compliances for registering will vary accordingly. And so will benefits and subsidies like affordable business loan interest rates from lender to lender.
2. Register with IATA
In today's tourism scenario, there's no point in opening a travel agency that only books tour packages and tickets via trains. You must cover all modes of transportation – rail, land, water, and most importantly, air. While road, rail and water travel does not require a mandatory registration, as most of it happens domestically, international air travel bookings require the IATA seal.
A travel agency, old or new, gains worldwide credibility if they are approved by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). This Association awards its seals to travel agencies once they fulfil certain norms. It also conducts free training workshops for the professional development of travel agents and provides several benefits and air services around the globe.

3. Register with the Government of India
Another important answer to how to start a travel agency in India is by becoming a Government of India approved travel agent or agency. It is not mandatory, but we strongly recommend it. Again, it’s a seal that will award your agency a legitimate status.
When you're a registered and approved travel agency by the Indian government, travellers expect you to adhere to a certain standard. This is also why they will choose you over the non-registered travel agencies.
4. Get a GST registration number
No talk on how to start a travel agency in India is complete without mentioning GST registration. Without this registration, you won’t be able to collect Goods and Services Tax (GST) - a mandatory requirement when running a business of this kind. So, open the doors of your travel agency only once you receive your GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number).

Starting A Travel Agency In India – A Complete Guide
Tourism and travel are among the largest industries in India and generate significant employment. The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) estimates that the travel and tourism industry contributes 6-7 per cent to the world's total employment.
Starting with one of the 7 Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal, there are several places in India that every person should see at least once in their lifetime. Thus, apart from having a huge scope for domestic tourism, India is a magnet for international tourists as well.
There are many states in India, like Goa and the northeastern states, where the state’s primary revenue depends on tourism. Other important cities like Delhi, Bangalore, and Mumbai have grown more and more cosmopolitan due to the influx of international tourists in the country.
Thus, taking all these things into account, tourism has become inevitable for the country’s revenue as a whole. However, making a mark in the tourism industry is not easy, and starting a travel agency involves a variety of steps and processes.
Table of Contents
Business Model Choices for Travel Agency
Any person who is willing to open a tourist agency can do so under various business entities, and these choices are left to the entrepreneurs. Private limited companies are typically chosen by entrepreneurs as their preferred option over others because they receive numerous government benefits and subsidies.
People who wish to develop the travel business slowly generally do it under a limited liability partnership. In this case, offering online services won’t be possible. Besides, for travel companies, it is imperative to use the internet as a tool for developing the business.
In cases where the entrepreneur wishes to have a unique name and symbol, he can do so by way of register a trademark under the intellectual property rights laws in India.
GST Taxation for Travel Agents
GST registration is required for all suppliers with a total annual turnover of more than ₹ 20,00,000. The number of category states is limited to ₹100,000. Furthermore, the threshold limit of ₹ 200,000 does not apply in the case of taxable inter-state supply.
The following table lists the SAC codes of travel agents for outward supply.
How to Become A Government-Approved Trade Agent?
There are various parameters for becoming a government-approved trade agent such as invested capital amount, the number of working staff in the agency, and the office space. An agency must comply with these requirements to become a recognized trade agency.
The application for this must be forwarded to the ministry of tourism in the prescribed format by a recognized travel agency. Though the registration procedure is not mandatory, it is still preferred to be a recognized travel agency over an unrecognized travel agent. Moreover, the government encourages these recognitions so as to maintain a definite standard in the services rendered by these agencies.
IATA Agent
IATA stands for International Air Transport Association, which represents almost 84% of the total airlines in the world. This travel association provides various training manuals to travel agencies within its purview.
It is strongly advised that travel agencies become a member of IATA in order to take advantage of the benefits available. It is also really important for a travel agency offering international travel packages to be a member of this association, as it gives a lot of discounts on air services across the globe.
The Takeaway
According to statistics, India ranks 12th in the world in terms of travel and tourism GDP contribution. And there is a predicted 7.8% annual growth between 2013 and 2023. Thus, it is clear that tourism constitutes a big part of our country’s growth, owing to which the Indian government has sanctioned a ton of subsidies for start-up entrepreneurs in the travel agency space.

Becoming a travel agent involves not much more than becoming an entrepreneur. The majority of travel agents work full-time and operate on a normal business week. Their schedule is also based on their customer’s needs and requirements if the travel arrangements have to be revised or modified at short notice. They may also be required to work extra hours and extend their working hours in the office.
Identify Your Customer
The next step is to determine who your customers are and their interests in life. There is no need to determine your target customer by adjusting your travel plans or activities according to their requirements and establishing a marketing strategy based on your customer’s budget.
You can also create locations by yourself and develop your database of locations, hotels, activities or other facilities you could offer to your customers.
How to Become an IATA Agent
Do you want to become an IATA member? If you want, then after reading these details, you would like to take an IATA test. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is an organisation of trade that represents over 84% of global air travel (more than 242 airlines).
If you’re interested in becoming an internationally recognised travelling agent, IATA certification is among the most prestigious certificates of recognition worldwide. IATA also provides professional development and extensive instruction for travellers to help them improve their skills.
This course outlines the new paradigm regarding the function of a travel agent, the role of the customer in the travel industry and the business model. Furthermore, it explains complicated information like the best way to market, calculate the cost, defend and even charge the transaction fee. The course will award you an electronic certificate once you’ve completed the course.
Mark Your Business With a Logo by Creating an Impression
When you’ve decided on the structure of your travel agency business and the type of customer you want to serve, it’s crucial to create solid branding for your company. The truth is that it’s not too difficult to stay ahead in the current market.
However, it is possible to stand out by having an organised strategy or plan. While planning, just thinks about what you would like your customers to experience upon visiting your website or looking at your ads or even tasting your food. The more you satisfy your customers, the better you’ll be recognised as a brand.
Are you curious about how much it costs to complete an IATA course that will help you excel in a travel company? It is estimated that you will need to pay a minimum of ₹70,000 , including taxes that can be paid in two instalments every quarter for the duration of the training if it is six months.
Eligibility
Candidates eligible to apply for the IATA exam must have a minimum of 10+2 or higher and have completed their studies in any stream. This is a recommended course and suitable for
- Agency administration
- Travel managers
- Personnel from the agency’s back office
- Mid-level supervisors and managers
Fund Your Business
How did you intend to finance your company?

However, in the future, you’ll require funds. As you can see, your first budget is likely to be spent on branding, marketing, or advertising. You may choose to lease offices and recruit employees, which will require money.
In contrast to other industries, there isn’t a known and tested method of funding a travel agency business . The possibilities are endless, from personal financing to government loans or venture capital investment.

Here’s How to Start a Travel Agency Business in India?
Starting a travel agency may seem challenging due to needing the heavy documentation, finding the appropriate licenses, collaborating with airlines and lodging facilities, understanding the visa procedures for different countries, and finally finding the right business loan option with the most suitable terms and conditions. This informative article will teach you all you need to know about starting a travel agency business in India.
Appropriately Choose the Business Type and Structure
There is no one right answer that applies to everyone when determining the optimum company type for travel enterprises because everyone’s financial situation is unique. A professional lawyer and accountant can advise you on the ideal business entity for your travel company. They are the best and only people to do so.
Both an accountant and a lawyer should be consulted before you launch your travel company. Making the right choices from the beginning will help you avoid problems down the road with taxes and liabilities. You will have to spend some money to get this guidance, but it will be well spent. Also, you would want to ask yourself a few questions, like do you have partners in your travel firm, or do you intend to operate it alone?
You can register the business as either a private limited company or a limited liability partnership(LLP), depending on your ownership type. However, be aware that registration requirements will differ depending on your choice. Additionally, advantages and incentives like reasonable business loan interest rates will vary among lenders.
Register with the Right Authorities
It makes no sense to start a travel agency that exclusively sells rail tickets and trip packages in the current tourist landscape. Rail, land, sea, and, most significantly, air are all necessary modes of transportation that you must discuss. Road, rail, and water travel do not need to be registered because most of it is domestic. Still, international air travel reservations need the International Air Transport Association (IATA) logo.
IATA currently decides who should distribute air travel items and how they should be done. It sets guidelines for managing the travel industry. IATA codes, for instance, are employed wherever air travel and travel occur. Consider airline designator codes for scheduling, ticketing, and paperwork; a prefix code to categorise passengers and cargo; a baggage tag issuer code to streamline the handling of bags; and a location code to facilitate handling packages. Airlines that haven’t signed a contract with IATA can use these codes.
You should also be registered as a travel agent with the Government of India. The Owner or a full-time employee knowledgeable about ticketing, itineraries, transportation, lodging options, currencies, customs laws, tourism and travel-related services should be in charge of the travel agency. Additionally, stronger emphasis might be placed on good communication abilities and knowledge of languages other than English.
A minimum of four qualified employees are also required. At least one must hold a diploma or degree in tourism and travel management from a university or another organisation recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). One of the qualified employees would be the business’s owner.
Finally, you will need a GST registration. Without this registration, you will be unable to collect any Goods and Services Tax, a mandatory requirement. You will receive a unique GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) upon registration.
Business Loans Available for Travel Agencies
Multiple loan options are available for travel agencies, provided the business loan eligibility criteria are fulfilled. Due to the development and growth of the internet, business loans can also be obtained online.
Once you have decided to apply for a small business loan , check the business easy monthly instalment (EMI) calculator for your required loan amount. This calculator will give you a fair idea of what your business loan EMI will look like. Once you have met the requirements for your lender’s business loan eligibility, you can choose from a range of loans under business financing. These are what they are:
- Term loans can establish capital when a one-time credit need arises.
- In essence, a line of credit is an overdraft facility. It provides a lot of freedom and guarantees cash flow.
- Business finance alternatives like invoice discounting can aid with immediate credit.
- Loans are offered to merchants repaid through regular deductions taken directly from the point of Sale (POS) machine transactions.
You must identify what sets you apart from your rivals at every level of growing your travel agency. Give your enterprise the freedom to express its unique individuality. By doing this, the company will distinguish itself from competitors fighting for customers’ attention.
Make FlexiLoans your ally in the travel sector by obtaining funding for your company at competitive interest rates. You can precisely determine how much of a monthly payment will be made by using the online business loan EMI calculator . Therefore, act now before it’s too late! Make your aspirations of starting a successful travel agency a reality by choosing FlexiLoans’ business finance options!

How To Get IATA Accreditation For A Travel Agency
Updated on : Nov 16th, 2021
The tourism and travel industry is one of the largest industry sectors in India. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is responsible for regulating the aviation travel industry worldwide. Entrepreneurs aiming to become a travel agent or start a travel agency business can obtain an IATA accreditation or registration.
The IATA registration will boost the travel business revenue. The IATA-certified travel agency businesses can issue airline tickets on behalf of airlines. Thus, it simplifies booking processes and cuts expenses for both travel agency businesses and airlines.
IATA Registration Benefits for a Travel Agency Business
The IATA accreditation helps build and grow the business relationship between travel agents of the business and airlines. Following are the benefits of obtaining an IATA registration by travel agency businesses:
- Access to IATA airline members with a single sales agency agreement that authorises domestic and international tickets sale.
- Access to IATA’s Billing and Settlement Plan (BSP), an interface for payment and invoice between the airlines, agents and transport providers.
- Unique identification across the global travel industry with the IATA numeric code.
- Use of the IATA accredited agent logo on-premises and website that provides visibility and credibility amongst customers and vendors for the business.
- Agent staff eligibility for the IATA/IATAN ID card that gives access to the special deals of over 1000 suppliers.
- Standardised procedures to ensure fair dealings with the airlines.
Necessary Registrations to Establish a Travel Agency Business
The following business registrations are required to establish a travel agency business in India:
- Private limited company.
- Limited liability partnership.
- One person company.
- GST registration.
The IATA registration is not mandatory for becoming a travel agent or establishing a travel agency business. However, having an IATA registration can boost the revenue and provide credibility to the travel agency business. The IATA registration shows the potential customers and vendors that the business is an accredited travel agency.
IATA Accreditation/Registration Requirements
The below criteria needs to be met by the applicants for obtaining IATA accreditation:
- The applicant must have qualified staff in its employment competent to sell international air transportation, issue electronic travel documents and report it to the BSP.
- The applicant must have business premises required for a travel agency business.
- An applicant must provide sufficient security for its business and standard traffic documents in its possession.
- The applicant must be financially sound and obtain a satisfactory financial evaluation.
The financial record and standing of the applicant play a significant role in the IATA accreditation process. In India, satisfactory financial evaluation for IATA registration is done based on the audited accounts of the travel agency business, which are as follows:
- There must be positive net equity.
- The net equity divided by long-term debt and other long-term liabilities must be greater than 0.5.
- EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxation, Depreciation, Amortisation and extraordinary items) must be positive except in exceptional circumstances.
- The EBITDA must exceed the interest payable by a factor of a minimum of two and ideally three.
- Adjusted current assets must exceed current liabilities.
The above financial information of the applicant will be extracted from the audited accounts of the business. Further, all agents/travel agency businesses should give financial security during the first two years as an agent. All travel agents/travel agency businesses must provide minimum financial security of USD 50,000 to be accredited as IATA agents.
Accreditation/Registration Process for a Travel Agency Business
Once the applicant (travel agents/travel agency businesses) meets the IATA accreditation criteria mentioned above, they can apply for IATA accreditation/registration. The process to get IATA accreditation is as follows:
- The application should visit the official IATA website and click on the ‘Create a User’ button.
- A page will open for registering on the IATA customer portal. The applicant needs to enter the details and register on the IATA customer portal.
- After registering on the IATA customer portal, the applicant must visit the official IATA website .
- Next, the applicant must click on the ‘Login’ button and log in to the IATA customer portal by entering the email and password.
- On the IATA customer portal, click on the ‘Accreditation Application’, fill the form and submit it along with the documents. Alternatively, the applicants can download the application form by downloading the ‘Accreditation Kit’ from the IATAN website , fill the form and submit it.
- The applicants need to pay the accreditation fee.
When the application is approved, the IATA accreditation will be sent to the applicant.
Documents Required for IATA Registration
The following documents must be notarised and submitted along with the application form:
- Proof of company registration
- Bank statement of company accounts
- IATA recommendation letter from GDS
